blackjack21: Hello sir, hope that you fine. I have a question: few day from now I will be traveling to accompany a friend of mine to help work and learn on his rice farm, he asked me to buy him a plant spray because he thought it might be cheaper where I'm coming from. but I can't get my head around the name he gave me- "fose up", said it sold 15k in his location.
I'm only familiar with names like "z force" for example, maybe he meant "force up"?
any pointers, please. force up is a non selective herbicide, that contain an active ingredient called glyphospate. It is used to kill weeds. There are so many other non selective herbicide in the market like flysate, uproot, sunsate etc. |

Then, the price for a bag of rice was around 9500 to 10500 naira perbag, that was before the ban on foreign rice.I Supplied for 12,500 naira. I spent between 400 to 600 naira to transport a bag of rice. |

Wickedfact: For the records, Obiano has been signing MOU on rice in Anambra right from when Judas Iscariot was pushing wheelbarrow at Aba. Nothing to show. This December, his people would carry rice to Anambra as always. Zero plans for the future, zero achievements, zero shame. my brother rice business is bigger than what you think, obiano is trying when it comes to agriculture, but in other things I will rate him zero. Building big rice mill is not the problem where the issue lies is getting sufficient rice paddy to keep that plant running efficiently and on daily basis. Come let me take you around various rice mill that have been shut down for years due to inadequate supply of rice paddy, am sorry this one might follow suit too, except there is a large farm land somewhere to ensure adequate supply |

Ycube: Please moderators take this to the front page. Thank you so much for your time and help. There are simple ways of parboiling, which won't be quite expensive and will give a very good rice quality when milled, I wish I can attach some files here for you to understand better. Drop your WhatsApp number I will chat you up. |

Yes you can. But I feel it's better you buy the paddy and contract the parboiling and drying to people that do it. |

Atlanticfire: My friend I will be frank with you. Moving from services business to a primary production business is moving 2 steps backwards.
It will be better for you to retrace your steps now.
In services you have lesser risks, more control, better cash turnover per year and better assess to financial support. I don't think this is true based on my personal experience,
There are primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy, farming is primary, conversion of raw materials to finished products is secondary while trading and other services are tertiary, the risks are more and the rewards less with primary sector of the economy. The rewards are highest and very less risk in tertiary sector of the economy than the other two sectors.
There is now the quarternary sector of the economy that covers such things as provision of data services and platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, ebay, Amazon, Nairaland with even higher rewards and less risks.
From your write up it is obvious that you are being moved by passion for farming and not by hard economics calculations of profit and loss and rate of returns and other economic calculations. Continue if you just want to fulfill your passion, go back to your trading if you want to have higher returns on your investment. I was owed for 3 months plus when I was supplying already milled rice to wholeseller, I was at their mercy because they will have to sell it then use your money for other business and start paying you in bits. I am not only moved by passion but by the need to explore an untapped area of agriculture which is very promising. Thank you so much for you write up. I look forward to more reviews from you. |

Agriculture › Re: My Sorjorn Into Rice Farming In 2020. by ikelords(op): 3:52am On May 27, 2020 |
tonee1: it's been a while u have been talking about this rice farming, with the pictures am seeing,it's obvious you haven't started planting.. why the delay? There are so many planning and timing to be done when planting rice and if you are not careful you might lose your investment. Am farming on a rainfed lowland, and the variety of rice am planting matured within 90 to 100 days, if you plant very early, you will start havesting when the rain is still at its peak which will destroy your produce, so down here we just wait for July before we start planting in order to harvest by October / Nov . |

Agriculture › Re: Has Any Farmer Ever Done No Till Farming Here? by ikelords(m): 9:23am On May 24, 2020 |
I am about practicing no till farming on a 4 hectares of rice farm. For the past 2 days I have been reading on the effect of no till farming on rice yeild, the truth is that no till has its advantages and dis, in a nutshell the type of soil and crop to be planted will determine if no till farming will be suitable. Crops with deep root penetration will need tilling such as cassava while no till is suitable for rice provided the soil is soft. |
