Politics / Boko Haram On The Run In Maiduguri - JTF by ikennaobi(m): 10:49pm On Aug 22, 2012
NewsRescue- In an interview conducted with SaharaReporters chief, Sowore, from New York, the JTF (Joint Task Force), Maiduguri commander, Lt. Colonel Sagir Musa declared that the Boko Haram terrorist elements in the state were on the run, following recent total Military action.

Discussing military causalities, Lt. Col. Musa commented that SaharaReporters had exaggerated the armed forces causalities this year by far. He estimated that only 4 of his officers had been killed in the line of duty.

The story runs below:
“Boko Haram Is on the Run in Maiduguri,” Says JTF Spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa
By SaharaTV, New York

The spokesman for the Joint Task Force (JTF) fighting to contain the Boko Haram insurgence has assured Nigerians that his force will soon defeat Boko Haram. In an exclusive interview with SaharaTV’s Omoyele Sowore, Lt. Colonel Sagir Musa said, “Here in Maiduguri, members of Boko Haram are on the run. They are on the run.”

Lt. Colonel Musa spoke about the JTF intelligence and operations capabilities. He stated, “Much is being done and we are getting closer unto to them. We are arresting while they confront we engage them furiously. It is now that we are, in terms of intelligence, deficient.”

In an operation in Maduguri last week, the JTF claimed to have killed twenty members of Boko Haram. See the full story here: We Killed 20 Boko Haram Sect Members In Maiduguri - JTF | Sahara Reporters. In response, Boko Haram has said that the people killed were actually innocent civilians.

Lt. Colonel Musa refuted the claims made Boko Haram that JTF were killing innocent civilians and not their members. He said, “Here were people that confronted us. Confrontation in the sense that, they were shooting at us.” When pressed about how can the Nigerian believe the JTF statements, Lt. Colonel Musa responded, “I think you have to believe an institution that has integrity, the Nigerian army.”

He also spoke about a possible ongoing dialogue between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram. Lt. Colonel Musa stated that the JTF was ready to act should negotiations break down. He added, however that he deeply hopes and prays that they will succeed.

Nairaland / General / Giant Tortoise Lonesome George Is Dead!!! by ikennaobi(m): 2:40pm On Jun 29, 2012

Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say Lonesome George, a giant tortoise believed to be the last of its subspecies, has died.

Scientists estimate he was about 100 years old.

Park officials said they would carry out a post-mortem to determine the cause of his death.

With no offspring and no known individuals from his subspecies left, Lonesome George became known as the rarest creature in the world.

For decades, environmentalists unsuccessfully tried to get the Pinta Island tortoise to reproduce with females from a similar subspecies on the Galapagos Islands.

Park officials said the tortoise was found dead in his corral by his keeper of 40 years, Fausto Llerena.

George was estimated to be about 100, which made him a young adult as the subspecies can live up to an age of 200.

Lonesome George was first seen by a Hungarian scientist on the Galapagos island of Pinta in 1972.

Environmentalists had believed his subspecies (Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni) had become extinct.

Lonesome George became part of the Galapagos National Park breeding programme.

After 15 years of living with a female tortoise from the nearby Wolf volcano, Lonesome George did mate, but the eggs were infertile.

He also shared his corral with female tortoises from Espanola island, which are genetically closer to him than those from Wolf volcano, but Lonesome George failed to mate with them.

He became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands, which attract some 180,000 visitors a year.

Galapagos National Park officials said that with George's death, the Pinta tortoise subspecies has become extinct.

They said his body would probably be embalmed to conserve him for future generations.

Tortoises were plentiful on the Galapagos islands until the late 19th century, but were later hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction.

Their habitat furthermore suffered when goats were introduced from the mainland.

The differences in appearance between tortoises from different Galapagos islands were among the features which helped the British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution.

Some 20,000 giant tortoises of other subspecies still live on the Galapagos.

Want to have a better memory and amaze everyone including yourself?
“Who Else Wants To Improve Their Memory
So That They Can Instantly Recall Information,
Pass Their Exams With Ease, Get Promoted Fast
And Get The Respect From Their Peers?”

Here’s Your Opportunity To Get A Sharp Memory
And Increase Your Chances Of Success

Dear Friend,
Don’t pull out your hair every time you forget something.
A lot of people have bad memories and are embarrassed by it. You’re not alone.
But did you know that you have the ability within you to improve your memory? You can remember names, to-do lists, project tasks, exam material and anniversary dates with ease.
All you need is to know how to unleash that goldmine of yours – the capability to remember things upon request!

Here’s an interesting story...

A man was in his 2nd year studying for his University Degree. It’s the 3rd consecutive year for him. He has failed his year 2 year exams twice already.
While being laughed at behind his back from his former classmates, this 31 year old man continued to study hard – he always has.
He spends an enormous amount of time studying. It affected his social life but he was keen to pass.
No matter how hard he studied and revised the material, he just couldn’t seem to remember enough facts for him to pass the exams.

The thought of suicide was not far away. That was how much it frustrated him.
One day by chance, the man was speaking to a woman who has done very well in her exams and was in her final year.
She always seemed happy and relaxed. She had time to go out with friends, read science fiction (which was her hobby) and most important of all, she passed with flying colors with every exam or test she took.
The man told her about his problems and then asked her how she did it.
She told him that it was because she had a good memory! She studied on how to get a powerful memory which helped her studies and her personal life.
After that mind opening conversation, the man started to research and study books on improving his memory.
A year and a bit later, he graduated from University and went on to become a successful medical doctor.
His life totally changed just by improving his memory!

Is It possible For Anyone To
Have A Good Memory?

By now you'll be wondering, what sort of techniques the man studied to turn his life around and whether you can also get the same results. The answer is yes and no.
Yes, you can get the same results if you take time to study and practice the techniques consistently. Your memory can improve and you'll achieve amazing things which you never thought was possible before.
No, you will not get the same results if you just read the methods and not practice them. Reading without action is meaningless.

Those are the simple, blunt facts of life.
People with good memories live the life which most people envy:

• They spend little time revising for exams but yet they get good grades
• They’re confident when given tasks and seem to have everything under control
• They remember to do lists such as shopping lists and schedules
• Recall and quote facts from books they have read with ease
• Remember faces, names and what they do, after being introduced to them only once
• Ability to operate new gadgets upon reading the manuals, once
• Remember who owes them money and when :-)

Improving your memory, is one of the best investments you can make. It pays off by the years of achievement you'll gain.
In my book “Secrets To Improving Your Memory In 7 Days”, I talk about the techniques professionals and successful people use to improve their memories.
The methods are step by step and are guaranteed to improve your memory in 7 days. It’s written in an easy to follow format without all the technical jargon. Just plain facts that work!

Jokes Etc / Hon Farouk Lawan Confesses Existence Of Evil Twin by ikennaobi(m): 9:51pm On Jun 11, 2012
Abuja - The story so far:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) questioned the Chairman of the House’s Adhoc Committee on Petroleum Subsidy, Hon. Farouk Lawan, over bribery allegation involving $600,000.

A video recording purportedly showing the bride money exchanging hands is in the possession of the EFCC.

Hon. Lawan has since denied being the one captured in the clip, collecting marked dollar bills.

Speaker of the House, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and other lawmakers have disowned Lawan over his selfishness in not sharing out the money collected as is customary.

Actors in the drama:

Mr Femi Otedola of Zenon oil has claimed responsibility for the sting operation which led to the video recording.

Mr Otedola, too stingy to pay a bribe, invited the SSS to monitor his discussions with Hon. Farouk.

Otedola also cleverly (stingily?) got the security agency to provide the marked dollars allegedly paid to Lawan and one Boniface.

A former head of state is said to have handed the tape to the house of reps after viewing it and discovering it wasn’t the Indian Movie Otedola promised him. This infuriated him much.

Latest developments:

Bowing to immense pressures to clear his name, Hon. Lawan has now revealed a dark family secret, namely, that a dark sheep exists in the family in the person of none other than the honorable’s own identical twin brother.

This revelation, which was understandably heart wrenching for the lawmaker to disclose, fully exonerates Lawan from collecting the bribe as it was his twin, Loki, impersonating Lawan, who demanded and collected the bribe and was subsequently filmed by SSS agents.

In a press statement released by the family, spokesperson for the honorable member said:

“We can see how he (Loki) could have deceived everybody including the SSS. Both he and our son, Lawan, are very difficult to tell apart and only we family members can differentiate them.

“We implore the public to please leave us alone during this trying period as we deal with the disgrace that this bad egg has once again brought upon us.”

It was further disclosed that the mischievous twin has since gone into hiding as he often does and may never be found until he decides to surface again.

Oil Companies Chiefs are said to have funded the SSS/EFCC joint operation as part of social-corporate responsibility initiatives.

Politics / Farouk Lawan Claims He Collected Bribe To Use As Evidence! by ikennaobi(m): 9:03pm On Jun 10, 2012
ABUJA-Hon. Farouk Lawan, the man at the center of the 'caught on camera bribe' now claims that he only collected the bribe to use as evidence against the oil cabal but his colleagues are not buying his story because he waited until he was exposed to make the claim and did not inform any member if the house until the security services blew the lid of the deal.

Also, more details are emerging as to what transpired. The whole saga began after the SSS got a tip that the House Adhoc Committee probing the Fuel Subsidy regime had been receiving bribes from different quarters to influence their report and sex it up to embarrass the government.

Investigations then commenced which established the truth of the matter. At this point a plot was hatched to entrap the chief bribe taker, which was the head if the commitee, Farouk Lawan.

A camera concealed in a pen was handed over to Femi Otedola, CEO of Zenon Oil, who had a meeting with Farouk Lawan whbe negotiated a $3 Million dollar bribe with Otedola and collected a down payment of $600K.

Lawan then kept quiet and concealed receipt of the money from all and sundry and after the report was released he approached Otedola to collect the balance of his money. It is known that Lawan plans tocontest for Kano State governor in 2015 and needs a financial war chest for the contest.

However, when the scandal broke, Lawan in an attempt to turn the case against him approached a member of the House's Committee on Narcotics and Financial Crimes to appeal to them to tender the money he collected on-camera as evidence of an attempt to bribe him, but the committee members refused to be used claiming that they could only have agreed had Lawan come to them before the scandal blew open.

Meanwhile, Lawan's commitee members have expressed disappointment in the fact that Lawan could collect such a huge sum without putting them in the picture.

In related news, the House Spokesman, Hon. Zakari Muhammad, has issued a statement washing the hands of the House of the Farouk Lawan bribery and stating that the House will not cover up anybody's alleged crime and would allow the rule of law to run its course.

The allegation of the bribery blew open after former President Olusegun Obasanjo alleged that there were thieves and armed robbers in the National Assembly and state legislative houses, and the Speaker of the House Hon. Aminu Tambuwal travelled to the former president’s Ota residence to seek audience with him over the statement.

It was gathered that Obasanjo showed Tambuwal a certain video recording which showed the committee member collecting a huge amount of foreign currency ( said to be $600,000) from some oil company officials.

Tambuwal was said to have been rudely shocked by the video Obasanjo showed him to justify why he made his controversial allegation against the lawmakers.

It was gathered that the Speaker confronted the committee member over the issue in a meeting of principal officers of the House where he had been summoned to defend himself.

There were speculations, at the weekend, that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had invited the House adhoc committee member for interrogation but this could not be confirmed.

Reacting to the scandal, yesterday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mohammed, in a statement, said “The attention of the House of Representatives has been drawn to reports alleging that one of its members, has, in the course of his committee work as a member of the ad hoc committee which investigated the subsidy regime, allegedly received a gratification from an oil baron to exonerate his companies from complicity in the oil subsidy scam.

“While we await investigation into these weighty accusations, we wish to state without equivocation that this Honourable House will never take side with corruption and we will always stand on the side of the rule of law.

“The reason we inaugurated the ad hoc committee to look into the controversial subsidy regime in the first place was to expose corruption in the sector, as such, we cannot, for whatever reason, support any underhand dealing from any quarter.

“However, these accusations, what ever their merits, do not detract from the quality of the work done by the committee. The report of that committee was adopted by the whole House and we stand by the resolutions of the House.

“The present House of Representatives will not relent in it’s efforts to render quality legislation and oversight functions to Nigerians. Today, we are gradually beginning to see the end of this monstrosity that has bedeviled our progress as a nation for so long.

“We hope that the Executive will not, because of this allegation, abandon it’s commitment towards bringing to justice, the culprits already identified in the committee’s report.”

It would be recalled that the Speaker had heaped praises on the Committee when it submitted its report which was subsequently adopted by the entire House”.

BBC Account;
Gunmen in Nigeria have attacked two churches during Sunday services, killing and wounding worshippers.

In the central city of Jos, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a church, killing at least two people and wounding dozens more.

Five gunmen opened fire in Biu in Borno state, killing one woman and injuring three other people.

No-one has admitted the latest attacks, but radical Islamic sect Boko Haram has targeted churches before.

One witness at the church in Biu said that "gunmen came to the premises of the church and started firing at people outside the church before going into the main building to carry on their killings", Reuters news agency reported.

"Many people have been killed and wounded," witness Hamidu Wakawa was quoted as saying.

In a country already divided along religious lines these attacks have the potential to trigger further clashes between Muslims and Christians. The Islamist militant group Boko Haram has admitted carrying out past attacks on churches. They said these were in revenge for killings of Muslims in central Nigeria during previous bouts of violence.

Boko Haram says it wants to impose Sharia law across Nigeria. A recent statement from the group rejected the idea of peace talks with the government and vowed to increase the attacks.

Moments after the suicide bombing in Jos, Christian youths set up roadblocks and had to be dispersed by police, according to one witness.

"Angry youths have gone wild, even attempting to prevent the security personnel from getting to the scene of the incident. They had to force their way out by shooting in the air to disperse them," Emmanuel Davou was quoted by Reuters as saying.

The explosion killed at least two worshippers and the suicide bomber, while wounding more than 40 others.

But government sources feared "scores" may have died, according to news agency AFP.

Boko Haram has carried out numerous attacks in northern Nigeria, killing hundreds of people since 2009.

The group - whose name means "No to Western education" - wants to impose Sharia law across Nigeria.

It has targeted churches, schools, police stations, and other government buildings.

The group has said it was behind the suicide bombing of a church last weekend which left at least 12 people dead in Bauchi City.
