111jideofor: I still find it funny that most people don't know why Nigeria economy went into recession, they love the incompetent lies of Lai Mohammed about the past government ruining everything. It's also myopic to think that if Jonathan were to still be in power, we would be worse off. The truth about Nigeria's recession is this; it was caused by the president's unguided rhetoric and uncultured body language. Firstly, there is nothing we are buying today that we weren't buying 5 years ago, therefore it's not our purchase that put pressure on Naira but withdrawal of funds by foreign investors. After the election, the president created instability with his unguided statements about how everyone is corrupt and how everyone is going to jail. The instability made foreign investors to liquidate their investment and change their money to dollars. In the process of trying to flee, they were willing to buy dollars at any price, which lead to high exchange dollar rate. Even though some of them were not ready to run away, but want their money in dollars to save their investments from devaluation, the president gave a bad signal by banning deposit of foreign currency into dormiciliary accounts. That was enough for free market believers to see the draconian handwriting on the wall, that was the beginning of dollar rush. To make matters worse, the president came up with another outrageous policy of rationing dollar to certain sectors and blocking many sectors out. That was the nail in the coffin which facilitated the emergence of free FALL. In the end, foreign investors took over $80B out of the economy within a short period and everything went down to free fall. To those who believe it will be worse if Jonathan is still there, you are all wrong. Policy continuity and political stability will not let billions of dollars leave our shores within such tiny time frame. Even though the government might have income shortage, the private sector will weather the storm by their confidence in the market. The fear of the unknown created by PMB is responsible for the economic downturn not low oil price. Interest rate in America is currently at 0.5% while it is 12% in Nigeria. JP Morgan Chase will not mind borrowing $50 billion from Feds at 0.5 and put in Nigeria for return of %2000 profit. Citi bank will do the same, likewise US Bank Corp. Chase gave Buhari warning about the repercussions of his fixing policy before they pulled out, but his illiterate cyber warriors and misseducated e-soldiers said JPMORGAN can go to hell, they no longer believe in economic metrics since their messiah is in charge. Funny enough they are all suffering today because of the stupid policy, but they find relief by blaming it on past administration and Gucci appetite of average Nigerians. For your information, if your president "kontunu" with his unguided rhetoric, Naira will go down to N1000/1 $. But we thank God, he is no longer talking. Oil prices fell and Jonathan mismanaged what we could have saved to help us withstand the shock. Go and check other oil dependent economies and notice Nigeria is one of the best performing despite having low reserve. As for seeming withdrawal of foreign investors I am well aware that most of them are just proxies to politicians and when they lost power to Buhari they needed to move their money out of fear resulting from dirty deals which were mostly money laundering. |

Well, same thing they do to the citizens, take their money and call them to file up while they share them tiny portion of the money in form of rice and #200. I would leave you with just this simple chart below comparing crude prices vs Nigeria's growth rate. If you cannot still see the downward acceleration in line with the oil prices, if you can't still see how this downward plunge started during GEJ's time but only crossed below the zero mark after handover, then I doubt any other indices I present will make any sense to you. Good luck in your convictions, GEJ was a saint who made Nigeria Dubai but Buhari came in and reversed it all in one year. www.nairaland.com/attachments/4178677_gdpvscrudeprice2_jpegc5856f214a58ffdca179aefcd84d6ffd The truth is that we never really experienced growth. We only enjoyed higher income from oil sales which equally dwindled with the fall in oil price. Buhari's policy will help us manage possible future oil boom better. |

When he assumed office in May 2011 he inherited both assets and liabilities of Imo State Government. I didn't see him refuse to use the billions Ohakim left for him, so why should he not clear the arrears? Obasanjo wasn't totally responsible for all the accumulated debts to the Paris Club and other financial institutions but he cleared and settled the debt back then so why make an excuse for Rochas? Mind you Rochas has been in office for 67 months, isn't that enough to clear the arrears? Na only God go punish una. He was paying in installments till late 2014 when our economy became shaky. What he is trying to do is to negotiate down the arrears and clear it totally for the benefit of all especially the next Government after his. If the past Governments were paying in installments maybe it should have been reduced to 3 months by now. |

This thread is necessary to correct some misnomer circulating on Nairaland for a while. There have been numerous protest by pensioners in Imo State recently because of political reason hence the attempt to mislead the uninformed.
The reason for the protests is not because pensioners are owed by Okorocha Government but because arrears of pensions were accumulated between 1976 till date with the longest being 33 months of IBC pensioners who were laid off by a past Government and never received pensions.
I have read where people commented without being informed that the issue is clearing of arrears accumulated by past Governments and inherited by the present one. Rochas Okorocha has been trying to clear the arrears in phases. What he is trying to do with the 60% cut is to pay off every arrears completely and free the next Governor from the burden of pension arrears.
I am not in support of 40% as it's too marginal but we should blame those who created the arrears like Mbakwe and Udenwa as well as Ohakim who never for once cleared some part of the arrears while he held sway than to use it to indict innocent Okorocha who is only trying to help. |

This is from 2012 when Okorocha paid 5 months out of the arrears accumulated from 1976 to 2011. http://www.christianvoicenewsonline.com/2012/06/27/primary-school-pensioners-cry-to-gov-okorocha/Primary school pensioners in Imo State have passionately pleaded with the rescue government of Owelle Rochas Okorcha to prevail on the appropriate government agencies responsible for payment of their pensions and gratuities, to expedite action on the matter, in order to avert imminent disasters and mass family discomfiture. From all the 27 local government area in the State, it is a tale of bitter lamentation. Majority of these senior citizens who spoke to Christian Voice on the conditions of anonymity simply told this reporter; “we are being punished for rendering selfless services to our father land”. “Some of us have died without receiving their pensions and gratuities, more than 14 years after retirement”. Some, however, applauded the efforts of the present administration in Imo State for paying them five months pension arrears in March this year. |
