ImperialCovfefe: When the Naira appreciates, you don't hear a peep. Always silent. Even a 25% change? Musings. With the CBN not supplying BDCs with dollars and with the absence of a reliable centralized price aggregating service like abokifx, can temporary volatility in the crypto market disrupt USD-NGN pair? I have been watching this play out in small scale over weekends, with the relatively liquid USDT-NGN (Binance) and BTC-NGN (Luno) pairs effectively setting prices. Furthermore, with no sufficiently liquid parallel market to effectively arb and price correct the crypto markets, it could be hypothetically possible to run a highly profitable strategy by simultaneously MMing those markets and mopping up BDCs liquidity. |

DrAwo: It's clear that GTCo is deliberately slowing loan growth possibly due to the low interest environment or for some other reasons best known to them...
Now that rates are up, we'll see what cards they have up their sleeves...
Very stimulating chat by the way... They also have to think about the macro realities and credit cycle. The number one consideration for investors when looking at banks is the quality of the underwriting process. As they are inherently a very-leveraged business, this cannot be overemphasized. Most banks have capital to risk-weighted assets of around ~20%. Equity holders can very easily be wiped out when loans default [imagine liabilities of over N4.84tr and SE of N0.84tr]. So, imagine a country where the consumers are weak and there has been no growth in nominal GDP per capita since 2016. Coupled with purchasing-power-destroying inflation running hot. Why will a sane company be increasing loans? I think the CBN may possibly be deluded. |
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by ImperialCovfefe: 4:59pm On Oct 23, 2022 |
DrAwo: Concluding part...
The main point is that GTCo seem to have consciously limited the amount of loans they offer which has limited their net interest income and eventually, their profits...
They presently have the highest NPL amongst the FUGAZ (6.1% if my memory serves me well) which might explain why they are trying to clean their books first before resuming loan issuance at usual rates...
As I said, I might be wrong. I'm just sharing my thoughts after looking at their books...
I hope this helps .. Great insights boss, as usual. Let me add some color. For the NPL, they simply are more aggressive in pushing loans to [IFRS] stage 2. When macro changes or they sense issues with the creditors, they preemptively take some charges and push the loans to NPL, far faster than their peers. As for the loans, Agbaje has repeatedly stressed in the earnings call that the interest rate was being artificially suppressed by the CBN, and has been positioning for a while for a rise in rates to match with the underlying macro realities. He allowed lots of loans to be paid back in full without redeploying them and noted he doesn't want to even think about competing in reducing loan rates to the highest [credit] quality firms. |

DrAwo: So what's your conclusion or your thoughts?
Moat breached? Moat intact? Moat under significant threat?
I personally think they are in a bad run of form due to certain conscious decisions they've made... I expect them to hit their usual stride in a year or two... This is a personal opinion and not investment advice... Interesting. Examples of those conscious decisions? |

Olaide1295: @imperialcovfefe, Thanks for the heads up. Can you help understand the image below relative to the current ~15% yield on Eurobonds. Is getting >700 units of the Stanbic USD fund on cowrywise a good deal for $1k USD (example)?
Another one is ARM Eurobond fund which is 75% eurobond. Help me understand how to calculate yield on the bonds relative to current market rates. Thanks. You can only get the coupon yields if you buy the Eurobonds directly (Secondary market). For that, you need at least $125k. These other dollar bond funds are not transparent with their mark-to-market processes. They are probably afraid to show losses on their books for their retail clients. Maybe @ernie4life can shed more light on those for you. You can get the daily fund prices/yields from FMAN's website: https://fman.com.ng/pricelist. |

FYI: For those interested
Nigeria's 2030 Eurobond is trading at $63/unit with a yield of 15.85%. That's a double of your money in USD if compounded for 5 years. That's a high hurdle rate for equities to beat. |

gbadexy: Good morning chief engineer, Graffitex is N16000 and it covers 6/8 sqm per drum. The wall does not need to be screeded before application. It comes in different colors too and doesn't need painting but varnish could be applied on it to give it a shiny effect. I've been asked severally online and offline if it could be applied on an unplastered wall and an idea just occurred to me that it would be possible if the blocks are primed with good quality paint. This would help to make the surface of the blocks less porous, bind the loose particles and form a surface that would allow smooth application without wasting the graffitex. Hello bro, Thanks for your insights. Is Tyrolean different from graffitex? If yes, what are the key differences? Thanks |

ernie4life: Not possible in the present Nigeria I am really wondering how transparent these eurobonds funds are in their mark-to-market process. For example, Stanbic’s dollar fund is up ~2.5% YTD when the Nigerian eurobonds are down >20% YTD and just ~28% of the dollar fund is placement/money market. |
