EducationThe Plight Of Citizen Fidelis by InfinixMine(op):
When Fidelis got a Federal Government of Nigeria scholarship to pursue his master’s degree in one of the top universities in the United Kingdom a few years ago, he thought it was a dream come true. Although he had acquired an MBA while working, he believed a foreign master’s degree would increase his social capital.

But when he requested for study leave from his employers, HR said he was not eligible as he had spent less than three years with the company. To qualify for study leave, Fidelis was told, he should have put in at least five years. He was faced with the dilemma of either resigning from the organisation to pursue his master’s degree in the UK, or forfeiting the scholarship. It was a tradeoff, he knew. In the end, he chose the former option, confident he would secure a better job when he returned to Nigeria, armed with a foreign degree. And so Fidelis tendered his resignation letter to the company and travelled to London for his post-graduate studies. A year later, Fidelis graduated from the prestigious UK university with flying colours.

Like thousands of other foreign students, he decided to stay back in London to look for work. It was no easy task getting a good job due to fierce competition for the few available ones. He eventually secured a government job that was based on a non-renewable contract of two years. At the end of the contract, he could not get another job. He had no option but to relocate to Nigeria. He came to London full of hopes for a better life, but left bitterly disappointed.

If Fidelis thought his condition would improve when he returned to Nigeria, he was wrong. It took him almost six months before he could get a low-paying job with a Lagos-based marketing company. He resigned after one month because he did not get on well with the managing director of the firm, who constantly monitored his movements.

The MD had a good reason for snooping on him: he suspected that Fidelis would not stay for too long due to his qualifications. Indeed, his academic credentials scared away other potential employers that felt he was ‘over-qualified’ for the jobs he sought. In the course of his job search, he did try to contact his former employers. He was told that only the head office in Lagos could reinstate him. Since he had no connections at the head office, he did not pursue the matter further.

He eventually got a job with another company that did not take into consideration, his local and foreign degrees, before fixing his salary that was conveyed to him, in his employment letter. His countenance fell when he saw his remuneration—a figure far lower than what he earned before he resigned from his previous job to pursue his master’s degree in the UK.

Beggars, as they say, cannot be choosers. He knew he was in no position to negotiate for higher pay. After about a year, he resigned. He secured another job. The pay package remained practically the same, as his new employers had required him to submit his pay slip for the previous three months.

Now Fidelis is regretting his decision to resign from his former company, where he should have climbed up the corporate ladder, like most of his ex-colleagues, had he stayed back. As breadwinner of his family, he felt he had made the biggest mistake of his life and today still regrets his decision to quit his first job.

Sandra’s story is slightly different. She also had the opportunity of doing her master’s abroad, but opted for a Part Time programme in a local university, while keeping her job. Now, she has completed her MSc degree, and still has her job intact. She was even promoted shortly after acquiring the additional qualification.

In the case of John, just like Fidelis, he secured a scholarship for his master’s degree in a foreign university, while he was still doing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. He also got a job with a Lagos-based oil company, shortly after his NYSC. He declined the scholarship for the job, because he struggled financially while he was in the university. He felt he needed the job, which offered more security, than the scholarship.

These three real-life stories illustrate the dilemma some people often face when they have the option of doing a master’s abroad or keeping their jobs. There is no gainsaying the fact that a master’s degree enhances the status of its holder, particularly in terms of creating better job opportunities. As a matter of fact, many employers in Nigeria, especially those in the private sector, appear to have a soft spot for applicants with foreign degrees.

Some fresh graduates, whose parents are relatively well-off, usually travel abroad for their master’s degree, often immediately after one year of compulsory National Service, or in their first or second year in employment. And when they complete their studies, a good proportion of them typically would stay back to look for work. If they choose to return to Nigeria, which is not too common, there is a probability that they would get high-paying jobs. But things appear to have changed. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), unemployment rate in Nigeria stood at 33.3 per cent at the end of the last quarter of 2020.

Although the UK, a major destination for education seekers from all over the world, recently announced liberal measures that would encourage many international students to stay back after their studies, it might be prudent for some Nigerians who are contemplating quitting their high-paying jobs for post-graduate studies overseas, to weigh their options, in the light of the above case studies, and also the current uncertainties occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A bird in hand, as they say, is worth two in the bush.

the detailed attention you gave to the first set of birds was closer than the second set...

ZOOMED TO BILLIONS
[a long but worthwhile read]

Eric Yuan, am Chinese American that migrated to the US at the age of 27 in 1997 barely able to speak English.
He was born in 1970 in Tai’an, Shandong Province of China. As at 4th grade, he was collecting construction scraps to recycle copper for cash. He had his first degree in Applied Mathematics and his Masters in Engineering. He spent 4 years working in Japan until Bill Gates went there to speak in 1994.

He decided to move to California with the little English he knew but was denied visa 8 times before the future billionaire was allowed on the 9th application to fulfil his dream in 1997.

He was good at writing codes so she spent the first several years in the US writing codes. He first worked for Webex - a videoconferencing start up until it was acquired by Cisco Systems in 2007 when he became Vice President Engineering.

He was about 17 when the idea that eventually became ZOOM came to him. He was inspired to develop videotelephony software on a 10 hour train journey to see his girlfriend. He could only see her twice in a year and he wanted an easier way to “visit” her.
In 2011 while working with Cisco, he pitched a new smartphone friendly video conferencing system to Cisco Management but he was shot down. Cisco was hoping to compete with the FB social networking and his idea was out of place. They found out they made a huge mistake 3 years later.

Eric Yuan left Cisco to start ZOOM Video Communications in 2011. He laboured and received many rejections as he could not get any funding for the platform as they kept on telling him that ‘the market is too crowded’.
Even his wife initially questioned why he left his comfortable role in Cisco where he was already a top shot but he told her “I KNOW IT IS A LONG JOURNEY AND VERY HARD, BUT IF I DON’T TRY IT, I WILL REGRET IT’.
He changed his screensaver to “It can’t be done” in order to get provoked as he kept working.

Zoom kicked off in a crowded market but it cut a brand and a style for itself. As at 2017, Eric Yuan was everything in ZOOM. He was even in the Customer Service sending emails and receiving phone calls whilst also personally chasing after those who cancelled their subscription.
He is so popular with his own staff as the all gave him 99% approval rating with the outside one percent being his own self rating.

He reached the billion mark in April 2019 and was still remained unknown among the Forbes top richest people. He was not even near the top 500 richest as at December 2019.

Since the pandemic began, he has gatecrashed into the Forbes’ 500 richest humans landing at number 192. He is currently worth $10-11 billion dollars.
These billions were made on the back of lockdown with many organisations and companies signing up lucrative subscriptions. Some of them include Samsung, Uber, Walmart, Capital One and etc.

Many denominations and parishes that never knew of Eric Yuan signed up for his ZOOM platform in order to continue the gospel propagation and meeting the needs of their members. We at Hope Connections are one of them.
I hope you can read in-between the texts to take something home with you.

At age 17, an idea was sown in his heart whilst trying to solve the distance problem between him and his girlfriend. When I was at that age, girlfriend or boyfriend was a sin.
To now have time dedicated to solving distance problem between me and a girlfriend was definitely impossible. Mama Deji will tell you to face your future so you become a medical doctor.

I am not here to blame our parents. I am just here to remind someone that the idea you had to solve a problem years back can still be worked out. Just resurrect it.
Time hushpuppy and his gang spent on scamming the vulnerable one could have been diverted to writing codes.
It is a shame that with all the scamming, stealing and defrauding people, government patronage and etc, none of them is as rich as Eric Yuan with his idea!
Ideas rule the world but unfortunately, the church is not allowing her members to make use of the ideas given to them by God or inspired by the circumstances around them.

I am sorry I mentioned the church. I blame some of us for the state of poverty of the people we attend to when we continue to organise 9am to 12noon programmes for them during weekdays when they should be looking for work or meditating on proffering solutions to the numerous problems around them.

ZOOM has 300 million meetings DAILY. Eric Yuan owns 22%, and as a church, we are subscribed to a professional platform for 500 participants paying £40 a month. That means 22% of our subscription enriches Eric Yuan who may probably not believe in what we believe.

When you look at it from my perspective, you will ask questions that I ask. Why are the best ideas in life coming from people we believe have no part in our God? Why are the wealthiest people the ones outside of faith...they don’t pay tithes, they don’t give any sacrificial offerings in the church, they don’t ‘hear’ from God like we mostly say!
So sir, if you are church person with a medical background, I think it is high time we went back to God. We must be able to pray and heal or develop vaccines to cure some serious ailments.

If you are an engineer and you belong to the church, millions of ideas should be seriously buzzing in your heart now.
Seriously, if we practically follow the biblical principle, as we are discipling the nations, we should be lending to the nations also. Going by the way we ‘disturb’ God with our prayers, we should be the one with answers to the world problems.

Let us be the light!
