To keep Nigerians safe from deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday has ordered the Federal Ministry of Health to set up surveillance activities in the country.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, stated this when he briefed State House correspondents at the end of the council’s meeting chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister said the council’s directive followed the reported reemergence of the disease in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He stated the council had ordered that steps must be taken to keep the Ebola outbreak away from Nigeria, saying that part of the new measures to be taken would include a screening of all travelers entering Nigeria.

“Of course of great concern to the Federal Executive Council is the outbreak of Ebola in DR Congo.

“As you might be aware, over the last one month, DRC recorded 19 suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever and lost 16 of the cases.

“But what is also particularly important was that on Monday, blood samples from five patients in the DRC, particularly in a particular district in DRC, two of the five cases, Ebola was actually confirmed.

“And, FEC has now directed the federal ministry of health to step up emergency surveillance activities at all land and airport borders, so that we can actually keep Nigerians safe.

“What we will do is to set up an emergency operation center which will be chaired by Dr. Babasanya, who actually led our efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone and Guinea during the outbreak in 2014.

“Not only that, we will be screening incoming passengers, particularly passengers from DRC and neighboring countries.

“We will also ensure we step up all activities, screening people coming in so that we will not be caught unawares,’’ he said

Based on him, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) will also consider sending some team to DRC as part of building capacity for managing the outbreak.[/b]

On the 8th of May, the Ikorodu city on the outskirts of Lagos Metropolis marked its seasonal Oro festival at night, and the effects of the yearly celebration have been recorded.

The Oro Festival in Ikorodu on Tuesday paralyzed social and economic activities and restricted movement of women in spite of the assurance given by the police and the traditional institution on free movement.

NAN reports that women in the town couldn't leave there home, while banks and other businesses shut down, with no vehicular and human movements in major sections such as Aga, Ojubode, and motor parks,

Lagos Police Commissioner, Edgal Imohimi, and Ikorodu monarch, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, had on Monday jointly issued a statement, assuring women of their safety during the festival contrary to the agelong practice restricting movement.

The statement had blamed "mischief makers" for the development in the town, going by a social media report on the festival.

It also quoted the Commissioner of Police as saying that the command would not tolerate any discriminatory tradition against the female gender.

The statement further warned that the command would deal with anybody who hides under the guise of custom or tradition to foster trouble in the state.

God truly is amazing. We take life for granted oblivious to the fact that we can literally be gone any second.
That's my car, last night on our way home my family and I (my husband, myself and our two kids) were inside when 2 cars collided and ran into us. We literally spun a couple of times till we eventually stopped, facing oncoming vehicles. It was a horror as I thought my husband and first son were gone because the impact was on the side they both were. All 4 of us came out without a single scratch (Though alaxx' old dislocation came off again, and I've got whiplash, and my head hasn't stopped hurting, but the doc says I'm all good). All I can say is I'm thankful for life because my life flashed before my eyes, it easily could've been a case of 'RIP' (God forbid). Just when I'm about to blow? How naaauuuu?! Help me thank God oh. May we never be victims!
It is not our portion for people to say 'ahhh I just spoke to them' 'ahhh I just saw them'. Please please please let's always remember to wear our seat belts, both front and back, always! Lord knows it would've been a completely different case if we weren't wearing seat belts. It really is for our own safety, no one else's. Of which ambulance well done oh! In northwest Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Seventeen people have died from Ebola, the health ministry said on Tuesday, the fresh outbreak as a “public health emergency with international impact.”

“Twenty-one cases of fever with hemorrhagic indications and 17 deaths” have been recorded in Equateur province, it said, citing a notification to the ministry as of May 3.

It is the DRC’s ninth known outbreak of Ebola since 1976 when the deadly viral disease which was first recognized in then-Zaire by a Belgian-led crew.

In Geneva, the World Health Organization (WHO) said lab tests in the DRC confirmed the presence of Ebola virus in two out of five samples collected from patients.

“WHO is working closely with the government of the DRC to rapidly scale up its operations and mobilize health partners, using the model of a successful response to a similar… the outbreak in 2017,” it said in a report.

It said it had released $1 million (840,000 euros) from an emergency contingency fund, set up a coordination group and deployed more than 50 experts to work with the DRC government and health agencies.

“The action plan prepared by the health ministry has been approved,” an official statement released after a cabinet meeting said.

Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff yesterday gave out some hints on how we can to recognize suicide bombers.

He said this when he was paid a visit the Emir of Mubi in Adamawa State where suicide bombers hit last week; Gen. Buratai said the security state had in the town compared to three years ago, though there were still holes of suicide strikes.

He stated:

“This is the time we should reflect on what went wrong and ensured it does not happen again.“The situation requires vigilance. Suicide bombers disguise in different ways. People can identify them by the abnormal way they dress.

“Therefore, people should be vigilant. Because of improvement in the security situation, people have relaxed, but it is now they should reflect on their past mistakes.

“There should be a continued relationship with security agencies and provision of necessary information.”

He assured that security agencies would continue to ensure that suicide bombers did not have access to the community, but if they did, they would be apprehended before causing havoc.

He also spoke on the need for synergy between the military and traditional institution.

The Emir of Mubi Alhaji Abubakar Ahmadu said the Emirate Council and security agencies had identified the loopholes in security that led to the recent suicide bomb blast in the town.

The Emir said more than 20 people died in the incident, while over 50 others sustained injuries in the twin explosions at different locations in Mubi on May 1.

The traditional ruler described the incident as unfortunate and assured that it would not happen again.
