The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone `A` has intercepted ten trailers loaded with parboiled rice and other contraband goods with Duty Paid Value of N1.62 billion, from March 9.

Comptroller Mohammed Garba, the Area Controller of the command, made this known to reporters in Lagos on Wednesday.

According to Comptroller Garba, the unit also made N166. 20 million within March 19 to April 9 from duty payment and request notices on general goods from seaports, airports and also land border stations

"The command also intercepted contraband with DPV of N1.46 billion between March 19 and April 9.

"The seized items include Indian hemp (cannabis sativa), 64 exotic vehicles, 6,003 bags of foreign parboiled rice (equivalent of 10 trailers loads) 963 cartons of frozen poultry products.

"Others are 431 jerry cans of vegetable oil, 163 bales of used clothing, 569 pieces of used tyres, 69 bags of sugar and four containers, among others. he said

Garba said that the 570 parcels and 98 sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 1,550kg were caught on the Olorunda axis of Ogun State, following a tipoff.

"These Indian hemp was the highest seizure of such hard drugs in the history of the command. Such a drug will have negative effects on consumers if it escapes to the public."

The Inspector Makinde Yemisi Florence Grace, which is the daughter of James Oyeyemi, a retired police inspector was among the police officers killed by armed robbers last Thursday in Offa, Kwara state.

The slain officer, took to her Facebook page a day before her death, to celebrate her late sister's twins on their birthday.

While talking with the newsmen, 72-year-old Mr. Oyeyemi said the robbers operated unhindered because of the heavy and modern weapons they came along with.

"The police said they do not have the kind of weapons the robbers came with. The police have AK-47, while the robbers came with machine guns as I gathered. How could someone with AK-47 face somebody with a machine gun? The police do not have sufficient weapons," said Mr. Oyemisi, who retired in 1998 after 35 years of service.

"In the past, the IG used to equip the police with an armored car and bulletproof vests. So where are they now? They do not maintain the vehicles for operations, they do not buy arms, and they do not pay them well? How do they want the police to perform? They cannot perform."

He accused the police of not officially notifying families of the slain police officers of what went wrong to their relatives.

"It is not good to talk about the security situation in Nigeria because it is too bad. If there was enough security , how would armed robbers come to police station and attack police officers? Also, I learnt that some deceased policemen were dumped in a mortuary in Ilorin and nobody cared for them. Families of the deceased were not informed on time about the incident. It is wrong. I am a retired police officer.

"In the past, they would have contacted families of the deceased police officers who would arranhge how to bury their dead. They would then talk of how to get their entitlements. But nowadays, it is not the same," he added.

A family name Rufus, In a tribute to the slain policewoman, who described the deceased as a good Christian, both in words and actions.

"This is Too Much to Bear Oh Lord!!! Aunti Olopa as we do call her. Aunty Makinde Yemisi Florence Grace (nee Oyeyemi) a police officer per excellence and integrity. A Christian officer both in words and deeds, serving with Owode police station, Offa, Kwara State, one of the victims of yesterday's attack by the heavily armed robbers on both the said station and the commercial banks in the area. Not less than 50 people were said to have lost their lives to this unfortunate incident.

Hajiya Aisha Wakil, the Founder of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, has disclosed that Boko Haram insurgency has made sanitary pad unavailable to many women in troubled Borno State.

ThisDay reports that Wakil, usually called Mama Boko Haram announced that many women who are now victims of insurgency have resorted to using sand and ashes in place of the sanitary pad during their monthly menstrual cycle.

One of the effects of the insurgency is that women and girls are using sand and ashes in place of the sanitary pad for their menses and this is unhygienic and unhealthy for women and girls.

A menstrual pad is a luxury for poor women in Borno. Strange as it may sound but poor women and girls in community and IDP camps are still using rags filled with sand, or ashes as an alternative for sanitary napkins during their menstrual period, thus exposing themselves more to vaginal infections.”

As a mark to honour the Good Friday for Jesus Christ reenactment of his suffering, seven Filipino Roman Catholic devotees and a woman, have been nailed to wooden crosses.

Three devotees wearing crowns of twigs were nailed to crosses by villagers dressed as Roman centurions on a dusty hill in San Pedro Cutud village, and four others were nailed to crosses in nearby farming villages in San Fernando city north of Manila, tourism officer Ching Pangilinan said.

The spectacle reflects a unique brand of Catholicism that merges church traditions with folk superstitions.

Many of the mostly impoverished penitents undergo the ritual to atone for sins, pray for the sick or a better life, or give thanks for what they believe were God-given miracles.

Church leaders in the Philippines have frowned upon the Lenten rituals by Asia’s largest Roman Catholic nation, most especially if the events are used to boost tourism and business.

The reenactments of the crucifixion, however, have persisted and become an attraction in the largely unknown villages in Pampanga province, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the capital.

While the crucifixions have become a tradition for villagers, they still leave many foreign tourists bewildered.

“It’s terrible,” said Luke Henkel from Florida. “You wanna stop it.”

The House of Representatives member, Umar Buba Jibril, representing Lokoja/Kogi Federal constituency is dead. He was 58 years old.

Jibril, a three-time member of the house, died in the early hours of Saturday in Abuja, one of his political associates, Mr. Amuda Dan Sulaiman confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Until his death, he was the Deputy Majority Leader of the house, as a member of the All Progressives Congress.

He has also been a former Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly.

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello expressed “deep shock” over the demise of Jibril, who he described as one of the state’s most astute politicians.
