Education / The Sham Called FUTO SUG 2014 ELECTION. by infoscope(m): 11:40am On Sep 18, 2014 |
You begin to have faith in the future of this country and then one thing happens and you discover that the future of Nigeria is really bleak. Yesterday, FUTO students witnessed what could be best described as the worst case of electoral malpractices in recent years as the sham called the FUTO SUG 2014 Election was held. When some candidates were unerringly screened out for some sinister motives, I particularly knew we were in for a ‘very long’ election. First, A Presidential candidate was disqualified for reasons that he was too good for the job and then a Director of Transport aspirant was disqualified just because he was standing on the way of another presidential candidate from his department. However, the disqualifications are not the bone of contention as it has become traditional for candidates to be unjustly screened out in FUTO SUG elections. What however is the issue is the level of back-biting, bribery and rigging noticed in yesterday’s election. When ‘Onochie David Edozie’ started his campaign many people feared for the way he was spending money with ostentation. When students were not allowed to print digital coloured posters and campaign materials, ODE printed materials that would compete in quality with the type used in gubernatorial and presidential elections. At a particular point he shared ‘CASIO Calculators’ worth over a thousand naira to students. ODE didn’t just end with spoiling students with money and gifts but went further to oil the palms of some shameless, greedy self-acclaimed “stakeholders” who felt that with money all is solved. In order to make sure ODE wins the election even in the department of his major opponent, the e-voting software was compromised as the programmer was paid heavily by this same set of greedy stakeholders to do their selfish bidding. How can you explain the fact that Anaemeotu Steven a presidential aspirant will get just 4 votes in his department and his opponent ODE almost 160 votes? And this same thing happened in most of Steven’s strongholds. How can you also explain the fact that Onyema Jeremiah a Secretary-General aspirant of Mechanical engineering department will get 0 votes in his own department and his opponent get over a 100 votes? I am currently compiling the names of everybody involved in this sham and very soon your faces and names will grace the walls of Facebook, the threads of Nairaland, the timelines of Twitter and the pages of news bulletins. Nobody will be spared, it’s a promise. After this campaign the words of Ecclesiastes 7:1 you will begin to make sense to you. However, to all those who refused to be compromised, who refused to be intimidated with money, I salute you all. We are fighting this battle to the end. FUTO will soon trend in Nigeria, and it’s going to be for the wrong reasons. #SayNoToRiggingInFUTO #ThereWasNoElectionInFUTO |

Education / Ten Most Influential FUTO Students by infoscope(m): 4:09pm On Sep 10, 2014 |
Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It's about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results and influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work. These men have been able to influence not just their cliques of friends or departments but their faculties and the school generally. The mere mention of their names commands a lot of respect and admiration. This list currently in its second year is an attempt by the INFOSCOPE-FUTO to profile and recognize students in final year who are leaving behind their indelible marks in the sands of Politics, Leadership, Education and Administration. However, we think this list is not exhaustive but because we needed to profile ten students out of the pools of names sent in by our esteemed readers we are restricted to just this. 1.Barr. Comr. Opara Joseph Pa Chigo Some men pull the strings in FUTO politics, but then there are those who control those who pull the strings, Pa Chigo as he is fondly called falls into the latter. If you do not Know Pa Chigo then there is a chance you are not a FUTO student. He is the chairman of the largest political party in FUTO, the Coalition National Party and one time President of the prestigious FUTO Bar association. One of the few FUTO politicians that has around him this aura of elegance and charisma. He is no doubt somebody many FUTO students look up to. 2. Comr. Okereke Godson. Bishop as he is fondly called is the immediate past SUG President under the Aluta Impression. One man known for his political dexterity, eloquence and pragmatism. Little wonder at his handover/inauguration of the present SUG executives the Vice Chancellor in his speech called him the best SUG president he has ever worked with. While he was the SUG president he was also the Chairman, council of SUG Presidents in Imo State. He is currently the President Imo youth Liberation Movement. 3. Hon. Onuegbu Emmanuel. ‘Emma Ngwo’ as he is fondly called is a grassroots politician that has risen along the ranks to become the Chairman of the PDP in FUTO. He is a onetime Member, Students Representing Council that represented Mathematics Constituency. When you are playing opposition to the ruling party, you know politics isn’t easy. Emma Ngwo has comfortably done that and is still raising his head high. 4. Hon. Nwannah Dexter: An Honourable commissioner in the Independent students Electoral Commission in this year’s FUTO SUG election, Dexter is the board of trustees Chairman of the largest political party in FUTO; the Coalition National party and a onetime Member Students Representative Council that represented Environmental Technology Constituency. He is a man that is well respected in School of Environmental Technology where he emanates. He carries with him this confident demeanor that has endeared him to many. 5. Comr. Akpan Cyril. If you have not attended any event or program in FUTO where ‘A Cyril’ was the compère then you’ve not attended any event in School. He is the immediate past SUG Public relations officer and a student of Environment Technology. He is arguably the best compère FUTO has now. If you are looking at being the best of a publicist in FUTO, you are looking at being Cyril. 6. Comr. Joshua Ihejiamaizu Joshua may not be a politician but his influence in the tech community in FUTO cannot be overlooked. He is a final year Electrical and Electronics Engineering student who has ruled the tech space in FUTO for few years now. He is the immediate past technical director of Enactus FUTO and Co-owner of Nixit, a company that leverages on IT to deliver innovative health solutions. In 2013 he won the NASA Space Challenge alongside two other FUTO students and represented team Nigeria at the Enactus worldcup at Washignton in 2012. 7. Comr. Okonkwo Bruno Obama as he is popularly known, is the immediate past Secretary General of the Students Union Government and a powerful politician from Project Management Technology Department. His Politics has transcended FUTO and he now holds some enviable offices in the mainstream politics, in the PDP precisely. 8. Comr. Egwuatu Francis Beacon. A man of many things to many persons. To some he is a politician, to others a journalist and to some others a model. Just recently he became the Mr. Nigeria Universe after becoming Mr. Universe Anambra last year. He is a founding member of The Infoscope-FUTO, a onetime Secretary General of Hall E, Society of Mechanical Engineering Students and finally Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association. When next you see a Toyota Matrix Car branded “Mr Anambra Universe” around school, Know it is Francis Beacon. 9. Comr. Dike Susan The National Women leader Coalition Party FUTO and a former Hall C Governor and SUG Treasurer. One of the few female politicians that worth their onions. She is a student of Financial Management Technology and a politician so many females look up to. 10. Patriot Ejeh Ogonna The fear of ‘Man-O-War’ they say, is the beginning of wisdom in FUTO . They command a lot of respect wherever they go. They are charged with the sole responsibility of protecting the lives and properties of Nigerian students. Somebody is in charge of this command and Ejeh Ogbonna is the one. He is a final year student of Biotechnology department Compiled by Barr. Comr. Uwakwe Martin for The Infoscope-FUTO. The Infoscope-FUTO is a weekly news bulletin in FUTO with mission of bridging the gap between students and quality and timely information. https://www.facebook.com/TheInfoscope/photos/a.434095133312777.108296.433969599991997/742663429122611/?type=1

Education / How The 2014 FUTO SUG Presidential Election Will Be Won And Lost by infoscope(m): 10:03am On Sep 09, 2014 |
In FUTO if you are in Suit with a briefcase or bag moving from one lecture hall to another you are either a pastor from one of the fellowships or a self-acclaimed messiah seeking to return FUTO to the promised ‘Glory land’ and make it the best university in the entire country. The latter perfectly describes the current situation of things in School. It’s the second semester and as usual we are already getting bored of the usual clichés; ‘your boy is loyal’, “carry your boy along”, ‘I need your mandate’ e.t.c But beyond all the politicking, blackmails and back stabbing which are characteristics to elections how far has the different presidential aspirants fared in convincing Nigerian students to vote for them and what are their chances of finally ‘becoming’? This piece will go a long way to answering these questions. On the last count we have four candidates running for the coveted position of ‘Aluta No 1’ and if I am not mistaken they are Anaemeotu Steven, Onochie David Edozie , Holget Emmanuel and of course the current Hall A Governor; Okoroafor Joseph. Anaemeotu Steven, a 300L student of the department of Information Management Technology who was one of the very first to declare his interest has been going round school begging Nigerian students to ‘let a Clairvoyant man rePRESent’. Steven’s major strength comes from the fact he is from a department feared for her political antecedents and history. A department that few years ago produced an SUG President in a fiercely conducted election that saw the strong contender disqualified on the bases of state of origin. That’s story for the gods. While Steven may not be flaunting money with ostentation like some of his opponents, he has got a ‘sweet mouth ‘with a cool innocent demeanor that has endeared him to many students; males and females alike. According to Steven he intends making Wi-Fi services work in FUTO and at a very affordable amount too, if that is enough to make him win, I don’t know but one thing I know for sure is that Steven is a BIG threat. If you haven’t heard or seen the name ‘ODE’ chances are that you are a student of ‘Umuagwo’ and not FUTO. From Eziobodo to Umuchima to Ihiagwa and possibly Obinze you get greeted with this name written boldly on walls. Onochie David Edozie is coming as a revolutionary, preaching change everywhere he goes. Accepted change is the only constant thing as Heraclitus rightly puts, but are FUTO students eager for that change. The next few weeks will tell. One major thing that has characterized his campaign is the way and manner he flaunts his wealth. Currently, I am yet to see anyone with a more flamboyant campaign. While this has made him pretty popular amongst students, it does cast aspersions upon his credibility. For proponents of this school of thought, the more you spend during campaign the likelihood of you milking the union dry when you eventually become. But then you cannot rule out the possibility of him being sincere and credible. The major challenge he will be facing no doubt will come from his department (Polymer and Textile Engineering) and his state of Origin. In an ideal setting competency, proficiency, pragmatism and credibility ought to be the bases of judging aspirants and not state of origin and department. Unfortunately, our society today is far from being ideal, hence these things count. The current SUG President being a student of Polymer and Textile Engineering, I am yet to be convinced if FUTO politics is matured enough to allow somebody from the same department take over from him. The issue of non-indigenes not contesting in the FUTO SUG presidential election has been a major topic of debate for so many years as even last year a strong candidate was disqualified on this basis. We are yet to see how ODE will wade through this maze of challenges and come out successful. Time will tell. The third candidate is the very popular ‘Holget Emmanuel’ from the department of Project Management Technology. He is a son of the soil, Eziobodo precisely and that already is a big boost. Holget became popular when he started doing Mathematics tutorials for pre-degree students here in school and since then he has grown from strength to strength to become a tutorial master to of repute. The question on everybody’s lips is if his popularity will translate to victory at the polls. His major challenge will come from the fact that he has two other opponents from his faculty; SMAT. The last entrant to the race but definitely not the least is the current Governor of Hostel A; Comr. Okoroafor Joseph. When all thought the race was just between Steven, ODE and Holget, this vibrant and articulate young fellow from Transport Management Technology department believes he has what it takes to give the former three a run for their money. His major strength has to come from occupants of Hall A where it has been gathered he is doing quite well and the fact that he is popular among catholic students in STACC. Findings however reveal that while he may be popular in STACC not many people are aware of his political ambition. His performance at the polls will now depend on how well he is able to cover the entire schools and department in a space of three weeks or thereabout. Finally, I doubt the possibility of three candidates running from SMAT as against one from SEET. SMAT surely has its agenda and that will be greatly jeopardized if three of them are allowed to finally contest. The political shenanigans have started and a consensus candidate emerging amongst the three candidates is almost inevitable. Will Steven step down for Holget, or will Holget step down for Joseph or is it going to be the other way round. The events of the following few days will make it clearer to us. But before then let us not underestimate the influence of the ‘innovatives’ and the ‘powerfuls’. They have proved over time that they know the game better and this time around, there will be no exception. May the best candidate win. Written by Uwakwe Martin Mundus. (IMT 300L) 1 Share
