Politics / Poverty And Elections In Nigeria By Japhet Omojuwa by infoscope(m): 12:16pm On Nov 18, 2013
I found this interesting piece written by Omojuwa and decided to put it up here. Happy reading!

Those who expect a hungry, uneducated man to have an understanding or care about the power of his one vote expect too much. As long as man has a hunger problem, his life choices will always be dictated by the immediate satisfaction of that urge. Abraham Marslow already answered these questions.

I once watched as voters sold their votes in Abuja during the local government elections. It is a constant phenomenon in Nigerian elections and the practice cuts across all the political parties and all the regions of Nigeria. This reality then makes something clear; it would always be in the interest of politicians to have as many poor people in their constituencies as possible. It is easier to pay a man or woman N500 per vote than it is to convince a conscious population to believe in your vision or manifesto. In the end, as long as the majority of Nigerians remain poor, elections will NEVER produce the right kind of leaders for our country. Where is a country that constantly elects the worst of its people headed?

One man/woman, one vote sounds great in theory but while it appears a just balance for the election of leaders, that appearance becomes skewed in certain societies. In a country of mostly poor people, one man/woman, one vote is not what it is; it is what the worth of each poor person’s vote is. If the average cost of buying the votes of poor people is say N500, then it is N500, one vote. In Nigeria today, one man/woman, one vote is a sham. In the United States, not all votes are equal. That’s why the Electoral College remains a very powerful political institution. If we care about producing the best in a pool of leaders available for election, we’d have to focus a lot of energy and resources on educating voters. If people do not know the cost of the N500 they prefer to have for their vote, we’d never produce the right leaders in this country.

Our government will not carry out this voters’ education. If they do, the purpose would not essentially be to educate voters; it would be to have a reason to spend. It is in the interest of most incompetent people in government to have the status quo remain. They know that having enough money to share during elections is about the only barrier to cross to return to office. If it is true that an average politician just wants to win the next election, then we should not expect that they would be in a position to canvass for the education of voters. Those who care about change must bear this particular cross. Civil society, the media and active citizens must adopt this burden of voters’ education if they really want elections to matter in Nigeria. Expecting INEC to do this is expecting too much of an organisation that has not even been able to achieve its basic responsibilities even up to the general mediocre standard acceptable in Nigeria. The less we burden such an incompetent organisation with, the better for everyone.

It needs stating again: we will never produce the right kind of leaders for this country as long as our people, mostly poor and mostly illiterate, continue to be shackled by the thought of what they will eat and what they will wear. If we don’t change this, we can’t change anything. Written by Japhet Omojuwa Follow him on twitter @omojuwa

Sports / Celebrities Drum Support For Super Eagles by infoscope(m): 9:28pm On Nov 15, 2013
Calabar – Movie star Osita Iheme and music maestro Dare Art Alade were among celebrities already in Calabar ready to support the Super Eagles against Ethiopia in 2014 World Cup qualifier on Saturday. Also, former Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo Kanu, who helped Nigeria to its only Olympics gold medal win in football, way back at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics is present to motivate the team. Kanu was not alone in the drive to make the Super Eagles one of the best national teams in the world. Sultry voiced R&B top act, Dare Art Alade, was also on ground to give support to the national team, donning his green and white national colours ahead of Saturday’s duel. He was even at the last training session to ginger the team. Eagles Media Officer, Ben Alaiya, quotes Assistant Coach Dan ‘The Bull’ Amokachi as saying that there are many more music and Nollywood stars who are already in the city just for the World Cup qualifier and the team appreciates their support and will not disappoint. “Certainly, we won’t disappoint them and Nigerians”, he said.

Education / Revealed: Sex Between Female Students And Teachers In Nigerian Universities by infoscope(m): 10:27am On Nov 15, 2013
In many ways, Nigerian institutions of higher learning are no different from other such institutions around the world: They are confronted with several contending issues such as budget cuts, plagiarism, cheating during exams, alteration of data by researchers, unhealthy rivalry and tension between faculty members and between faculty and administration and between students and other echelons. These are constants within the academic community.

And of course there is the issue of séxual relationship between some students and some of their teachers, and between some students and some members of the administrative staff…

To be sure, there is not a teaching and learning institution anywhere in the world where such — séx between students and faculty and between students and staff — is not a concern. None! What makes the Nigerian context different is the propensity, the frequency and the severity of the aforementioned.Parents send their children to school to learn, no to be harassed and séxually molested. Young men and women come to school to learn and learn how to be contributing members of their immediate and global society. They go to school to learn to be good citizens, good human beings. They go to school to develop many skills – including critical thinking skill. And though many show up in all their naiveté and gullibility, still, it is not a reason or an excuse for them to be taken advantage of. Sadly, these are some of the horrors that happen to many Nigerian students, especially the girls.Sadder is the fact that millions of girls and young women are being abused and exploited on a daily basis. Many are denied their human and civil rights. Many have no access to education, to medical care, or to a caring home and environment. They are the “wretched of the earth.” While there are some shining examples within the Nigerian sisterhood, there could have been several millions more if the Nigerian society had taken its female population more seriously. But we don’t! For the most part, and in many settings, women are things, objects – things and objects to ignore or séxualise.Thinking about it now, I cannot remember which came first: the súgar daddy syndrome or the séxual exploitation of students by staff and faculty members (sometimes referred to as “Bush allowance”). Long before politicians became conquerors and rulers of the maiden and their honey jars — and long before military officers freely roamed the séxual landscape — súgar daddies were the kings.Súgar daddies paraded and patronised UNILAG, UNIBEN, BUK, UNIPORT, ABU, UI and every Nigerian university and polytechnic and college of education. And in some cases, they snuck into secondary schools and in the process committed r*pe and alarming perversions. Today, the larger Nigerian society does not worry itself with what was initially an aberration. It is now a given. Basically, súgardaddism has now become a practice, part of our cultural milieu.

Tell me: How many women, 17-37 years old, do you know who do not have one or two moneybags as a lover or séx mate? I am sure there are. But they can’t be that many. Poverty and unemployment and the general state of confusion and hopelessness have greatly contributed to the mental and psychical anarchy that now characterises the country. In the minds of many, the kingdom of God can wait. Money is the new paradise. You either have it or you don’t. In many enclaves, if you don’t have it, you don’t matter, you don’t count!

Burna Boy, after wearing quite a controversial outfit at the Felaboration, now decided to chose traditional Yoruba attire in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State at the Glo Bounce event.

Surprisingly, the celebrity combined it with a pair of sneakers and pulled the odd fashion well, or didn't he?

Who knows what else we will be seeing from Burna? Check out the photo below. How do you find the outfit?
