No I am not bitter.

Those friends you refer to i commend because they TRIED and didn't get in.

My point was to those who come on nairaland looking for schools that doesn't charge application fee, is cheap, doesn't not require toefl and gmat and yet feel entitled to give scholarship and funding. Those are the people I am referring to.

Yes he was lucky to get into notre Dame, but with that luck came the fact he aimed high and achieved and it took hard work. He would never have gotten in if his attitude was i don't want to do any exam or anything and just look for schools with easy entrance requirements.

This is one of the outstanding and matured comments in recent times. For the first time in forever, this is coming from ttmacoy. I will donate my sister to u.

I'm thinking of going around June or preferably July what do you guys think? BTW I appreciate you all.
No sir! Just the application fee. I'll be praying for your success bro.

I am back, as I said I would come back to Nairaland to give details after my interview (even though some notorious people here wanted to tear my head off just because I didn't mention the name of the school / program, as if say I wan chop am! Na wa for patience).

I got my visa this morning, thankfully. Here is my transcript as I remember it. The whole thing took like 3 to 4 minutes.

VO: Good morning, how are you today?
Me: I'm fine thank you. Good morning.
VO: May I see your passport, I-20 and SEVIS documents?
Me: (hands them over)
VO: Please place your right four fingers on the scanner...
Me: (does as requested)
VO: I see you're going for a PhD in Computational and Applied Mathematics. Why the University of Notre Dame?
Me: There are only a small handful of programs in the world with my current research interest i.e. in silico research in Computational Haemodynamics. Of the better programs, Notre Dame is one, and Stanford is another. Stanford is just beginning its own Computational Medicine program this Fall. I applied to Stanford as well but sadly I didn't get in. On the other hand, I got into Notre Dame with full funding and it has my exact research interests.
VO: Computational Haemodynamics?
Me: Yes, the study and computer simulation of the Mathematics and Physics / Motion of Fluid-Structure Interaction in Blood Flow. It has diverse applications in the treatment of cardiovascular ailments and in other heart monitoring therapies.
VO: (smiles) Wow, the Mathematics and Motion of Blood Flow? (typing fast on the computer, probably googling to see if I was bullshitting)
Me: Yes indeed, the Mathematics and Motion of Blood Flow.
VO: Okay, do you already have a Masters degree?
Me: No, I don't. I got admitted on merit into the University of Lagos for an MSc this January but just as I began registration, I also got the Notre Dame admission in February so I didn't bother resuming at UNILAG.
VO: I see. What was your undergraduate degree in?
Me: Electrical / Electronic Engineering. But I have been working as a programmer and self-studying postgraduate mathematics since I finished at the University, so I have the required background for computational and applied math.
VO: (smiles) How do you hope to fund your way through school?
Me: I received full funding from the department I applied to. It covers a tuition waiver, stipends and health insurance.
VO: (Flips through my passport) So you've never left Nigeria before?
Me: (smiles) No, I've never left Nigeria before.
VO: Congratulations, I'm glad to tell you that your visa application has been accepted. Please pick up your documents at this location (circles location on my documents). Have a nice day!
Me: Thank you. Have a nice day as well.

P.S.
I just took all sorts of documents to the place for nothing, she didn't even look at them. I was also worried about two things but she didn't even ask:
(a) Worried I'd be asked about strong ties to Nigeria, which I don't really have.
(b) Bothered I'd be asked how I will intend to apply my study when I come back to Nigeria (cos I didn't want to lie... well, it's possible sha)

I'm really grateful, especially after seeing her deny every single person that went to her own dock ahead of me. Last last sha, na God win.
Congratulations bro. I guess u will be doing the expedited PhD program.

innovativeme, @slimmy05, @imperiouxx
here's how mine was.

Me : Good morning madam (smiles)
V.o : good morning (smiles back)
V.o : how did you get to know about this school?
Me : my uncle told me about it and I went online and did some research about the school and found out that the school has state of the art computer labs that is at the students disposal to practice the theorical aspect of what is being taught and the curriculum is profound in the course I want to study, they also assign staff to student for academic guidance in order for them to excel in their course.
V.o : why do you want to study this course?
Me : I want to study this course because I have passion for it and so that it will equip me with the skills and knowledge that I need to contribute to my country, for example we always have electricity problems which we can solve by upgrading to a smart electric grid which is the modernised electric grid that uses analogue and digital information to gather data about the rate at which consumers use electricity and from that we can find a way to maximize the efficiency, relativity in the production and distribution of electricity.
V.o : what have you been doing after you graduated from secondary school?
Me : I enrolled at a federal polytechnic where I was studying.
V.o : (repeated same question) what have you been doing after you graduated from secondary school?
me : I was doing internship at a computer firm where I was fixing computer hardware and software problems.
V.o : when did you graduate from secondary school?
Me : 2007,
V.o : sorry we can't grant you visa here's this paper it will explain it to you.(section 214b)
Me : OK madam, thanks and have a nice day.

criticism is allowed peeps, want to reapply. my school is resuming on 22nd August. what are ur observations.
Bro, I'm sorry for the booking fee you've lost. You are gonna get it the next attempt. Quickly, there was no coherence in your response to second to the last question. The VO asked the same question twice to be sure you know what you are saying, sometimes they ask the same question twice but differently. You should have still held on to your response but buttress more on why you enrolled in for the polytechnic . In addition, I guess saying your uncle told you about the school, wasn't too fantastic, however, you redeemed yourself by stating that you did your research online. At this point, relax, reschedule your appointment for June (suggestion though). By God's grace, you SHALL get. Also, remember that how you fill your DS-160 form matters greatly. All the best bro

Innovativeame, I mailed my school and they replied that it is not possible for another I-20 to be issued. They however referred me to fmjfee for fee transfer. I mailed fmjfee this morning at 7am and I got a feedback that the fee has been transferred around 5pm. I am good to go now. Flight booking is next. When are you planning to leave?
I told ya! Congrat bro. I was told it's a new policy from SEVIS not to issue another I20 with the exact same sevis ID number. Log on to fmjfee to print ur new sevis receipt. Pm me let's please, let's discuss the travelling plan.

Hi people, please I just finished helping my sister fill out the non-immigrant student visa. On the DS-109 form there is a part that asks you to provide names and details of non-relatives in your country that can verify the information you're submitting. Who knows if they actually call or email those people? Because the non-relatives that we put don't even know she is planning to travel for school. We want to know if we should need to tell them.
They don't ! Feel free to use anybody.

Funny you. Want to mail my school first to issue another I20 with the former Sevis code. Their response will determine the next step.
Try it let's see what comes out of it. I did question the admission officer in my school about the dissimilarity in Sevis ID number. Her answer was weird. Let me wait for your school's response, then I'll know if it's a school thing or new sevis policy.

Gud pm house.. I av been a regular follower and i finally have my interview on Monday. But i need some quick clarifications and advices...

1.. I've read plenty times here when pple say VO asked them to pass their documents and they did.. Now my question is, do you pass ur passport, I-20 only or what else? I'll just like to know before hand.

2. I made a horrible mistake while filling my DS-160 form, i first filled B1/B2 visa and printed that, immediately i realized this i filled it again and changed it. Now the problem is this, my Comfirmation number on the appointment confirmation is coherent with that of the first DS-160 form, but it is different from the confirmation number on the correctly filled DS-160 form. so i have 2 DS-160 form printed...

Please Please.. what do i do? make una no yab me too much, just advices..

thanks.

No cause for alarm bro. Usually you do data capturing with someone across a counter before your main interview. They will ask for your passport, DS-160 form, Sevis fee receipt and the 5cm×5cm passport. After you have been called for the actual interview, you only present what the VO request for. Please don't give what you have not been asked, that will show desperation on your part. Don't be apprehensive, be sure you have all the necessary documents in case of necessity.
On the part of your DS-160, you can fill as many as you want, but be sure to use the right one to book your appointment. Go with same on your interview day.
Best of luck man! See you at the top.

Thank you very much bro. But wait! Initial and new sevis fee or number you mean? Because I don't have any $200 to pay again.
Bros, don't be afraid, you are not gonna pay any other money. Initial fee was $200 and the new fee is still $200. I learnt some are more or less than $200. It's possible the new one you have is either below or above 200, that's why they ask you to quote the new amount. You are not expected to pay anything. Remember that your title is "Fee transfer" and not "fee payment". Do the needful by sending the mail ASAP. After your new i20 has been updated, Log back onto fmjfee.com to print your new sevis fee receipt. That's all. Best of luck! We shall meet in Macomb

A quick one my man. How were you able to notify/contact sevis about the change in sevis code? Am in the same shoes as yours.
To transfer your sevis fee payment, email SEVP at: sevp@ice.dhs.gov. E-mail subject: Fee Transfer. Supply your name, date of birth, initial sevis fee and new sevis fee, and a current address. a brief explanation of why you're transferring the sevis fee. Attach a copy of your receipt number (from the initial sevis fee payment) and enter your contact details if they need to contact you back. They will answer within 24hrs. Fear not, you will be fine. I'm fine here wink

How do you guys handle noise making sexually hyperactive neighbors who screams like they are having sex in a burning furnace. I've stylishly told this guy that he usually gives me sleepless nights. He laughed about it and apologized, but he still continues. You know houses here are made of wood, the guy doesn't just allow me sleep. The girl screams like his bf is having her womb out.

I don't want to report to landlord.
Please, watch out tonight, if it happens again, feel free to dial 911, tell them you aren't sure why they were screaming, you are just lending a helping hand to avert further complicated crisis. Alternatively, you could pour them some chilled water, they will be fine. Oga Slimmy, I'm sure you are feeling those couple.

It is not a problem, but you will prolly have problem with the sevis, you need to contact sevis with the new number to be updated ASAPor you tell your school to issue you an i20 with your previous sevis no.
Also, the school said they can't issue a different i20 with the exact same sevis ID number.

#Interviewtranscript

Fellas, and so I came, saw, and conquered!

My visa was approved at the Lagos Embassy yesterday afternoon.

Preamble:

I was at the embassy on the 1st of April for my interview. I was in the 6:30am slot. My School was supposed to resume on the 19th of August. For some reasons I had to go to the embassy early because (1.) I got two offers, one in Canada and the other in the US. The Canadian offer gave me till 30th of March to decide and I asked them to extend my decision period till 10th of April and they accepted. I did this to buy time because I had already started the US processing before I got their offer. So with that extension from Canada, I had to go to the embassy on time. As it were, I didn't want to lose in two places and was trusting God that no matter what happen, one will come through as per visa issue. But I was more afraid of the Canadian Visa issue than US for whatever reason sha...

And so my interview on the 1st of April at US Lagos Consulate went does:

VO (Male): Good morning
Me: Good morning with smiles
VO: Pass your passport
Me: Pass it
VO: Place your four left fingers on the scanner
Me: Do same
VO: Checking on the system and then asked, what are you going to do in US
Me: I'm going for my doctorate
VO: Oh, ok.
Me: Fix my eyes on him
VO: Oh, you are going to the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign?
Me: Yes
VO: Why a doctoral program at this time
Me: I recently completed a Master's degree in Information Science and my interest has been in the intersection between people and technologies. I am interested in how people use technology and the best way technology can be created to benefit a given group of people. Hence I am focusing on community informatics at my PhD level with specific interest in multilingual devices for indigenous language speakers in Nigeria.
VO: Nodding, I see
VO: Are you working with a specific professor in the school?
Me: Yes, told him the name of my advisor and her specialization
VO: How did you get to chose this School?
Me: I used google to streamline my choice based on my interest at the PhD level and I saw a couple of schools which UIUC was part
VO: When do you intend to travel
Me: August 10 ( I already wrote this while filling the DS 160)
VO: Who is sponsoring your trip
Me: My uncle will be sponsoring me although I have an assistantship from the School covering tuition with monthly stipend
VO: You are travelling August 4?
Me: No I said August 10
VO: Then he typed for long and then began to count his fingers. I'm sure he was trying to consider the 120 days rule. He counted his fingers like twice (you know 120days is four months and so he was counting from April to August I guess). Then he left his counter and beckoned to a colleague and that one took a look at the application on the system and they discussed for like a minute. Then he told me: "you know what, I am approving your visa, but I can't issue it now. There is a 120days rule for f-1 visa."
Then he offered me a while paper and wrote on it that I should come back 12pm any Monday or Wednesday on or after 22 of April(this will be exactly 120days to my resumption)
VO: Do you have any questions for me
Me: Ok, I will like to know if the interview will be all over again and will I be interviewing with you or any other person
VO: Not really, you may just be asked a few questions. Just come with all your documents.
Then he asked me to return the white paper and he wrote on it that f-1 visa can't be issued until 120days to resumption, return on 22nd April and signed.
Me: Collected my passport and left feeling cool anyway

Note: No document was asked except my passport, I-20 and sevis receipt

Fastforward:

22nd April
VO: Good afternoon
Me: Good afternoon
VO: Pass your passport
Me: Passed it
VO: Oh, you were here earlier this month
Me: Yes, April 1st
VO: With smile, you came earlier than the issuing period for your type of Visa. Today is about the right time. You are going for your PhD right?
Me: Yes
VO: Removed my I-20 and passed it to me. Make sure you always keep that in your hand luggage when travelling. Picks a white paper with location to pick my passport and circled it. Pick your passport here on Monday. Have a great day
Me: Thank you

NB: I know the 120days rule, but I have to take that chance because of my situation and thank God it didn't work against me. Plenty of prayers went with it though!

Thanks guys...

Congrat bro. Please let's hook up. I'm heading to Illinois too.

Can I go to US on 15th july n also will like to be in New York for some days before going to de state of my sch,is it red flag to de immigration officials at de point of entry
NB:is it possible to book my flight for july now?
If there is a stop over, it's cool to book for the date you have proposed , however, if it is a direct flight I'll suggest you book for 16th. Just to be on the safe side. You need to follow the 30 days rule. I think you are good to go with the date. For the New York parole, get to the state of your school first, you can go to New York afterwards. Prevention is better than cure, be cautious and proactive, although it's no big deal to land in New York first, be prepared for any question those red neck will ask you. Cheers!
