The Presidential Committee on the North - East Initiative has raised the alarm over the increasing cases of rape and attacks on displaced persons in camps across the North- East. It noted that about 30 girls were raped in the Internally Displaced Persons camps in Yobe State in September 2017 , adding that the attacks on women and girls had worsened in this month , thus increasing the spread of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus in the camps . The PCNI Vice - Chairman , Alhaji Tijani Tumsa, explained during the PCNI Coordinator forum on Thursday in Abuja that the National Assembly had also expressed concern over the reports of sexual violence in the camps . He stated that NASS had asked the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Abuja to collaborate with the relevant agencies to combat the HIV prevalence in IDP camps . Tumsa blamed poor security coordination in the camps for the sexual violence on the female camp members , adding that his committee was working with the security agencies to address the problem. He said , “The National Assembly has expressed concern just like we have also raised concern with relevant agencies to offer robust security plans for the internally- displaced persons . “ Rape is a very unfortunate incident just like the HIV spread ; what we are doing is to create an environment where punishments are very severe and immediate and that is what has been happening since we got involved . ” Asked about the number of suspects in custody over the attacks, Tumsa said he did not have the figure , but “ as many suspects as have been caught are in custody .” He said the PCNI was making efforts to transit the North- East from humanitarian dependence to the phase of economic recovery, noting that when the IDPs returned to their communities, the committee would need to provide assistance for them to re - establish their livelihood . http://punchng.com/how-30-girls-were-raped-in-yobe-idp-camp-pcni/ |
A growing number of sick tourists are travelling to Serbia for sex at ‘animal brothels ’, it has been claimed . According to Mirror. co . uk, the capital Belgrade is said to be a hotspot for ‘zoophiles ’ who enjoy sex with animals such as goats , sheep , donkeys , dogs, cats , geese and cows . Online adverts offer animal sex from between £ 60 to £ 135 with visitors paying an extra 50 Euros ( £ 45 ) to film themselves , it was alleged. An investigation into the horrifying trend was broadcast by TV channel RTL recently which includes an image of a dog apparently wearing fish- net suspenders and high heels . Pavle Bihal , who runs an anti- animal cruelty group called Leviathan , wants the clubs closed down. He said , “ We have information about a club, which is actually an apartment , where all this happens . We are currently waiting for the location to be confirmed so we can report all to the police. ” There are thought to be a number of specialised estates and stables in the countryside catering to their depraved tastes . Farmers who run the ‘brothels ’ don’t see anything wrong with the setup , according to Leviathan . http://punchng.com/tourists-visit-animal-brothels-for-sex/

An ex - Administrative Secretary with the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr . Christian Nwosu , on Thursday alleged that he was cajoled into confessing to taking a bribe of N 30 m to compromise the 2015 general elections . Nwosu , who is being prosecuted before the Federal High Court in Lagos for alleged bribery , claimed that the three confessional statements he made to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on December 28 , 2016 and March 15 and 22 , 2017 were not done voluntarily . He claimed to have been threatened and cajoled to make the confessional statements , adding that he was not given the opportunity to consult his lawyer before he made the statements . He , however , admitted that he signed for and collected N 30 m from Fidelity Bank . Nwosu stated this on Thursday while being led in evidence by his lawyer, Mr . Victor Opara , during a trial - within - trial ordered by Justice Mohammed Idris to test the voluntariness of three confessional statements he made to the EFCC . The EFCC accused him of conspiring with two other INEC officials to take a total bribe of N 264 . 88 m from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources , Mrs. Diezani Alison - Madueke, to compromise the election . He had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges and opted for a plea bargain, after which the EFCC told the court that it had already recovered N 5 m cash and a landed property worth N 25 m from him. But Nwosu later abandoned the plea bargain after Justice Idris rejected the N 500, 000 fine proposed for him as punishment by the EFCC . Justice Idris had held that by virtue of Section 16( 2 )( b ) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition ) Act, under which Nwosu was charged, he was supposed to pay a fine of N 10 m or go to jail for two years . At his resumed trial on Thursday, he maintained that he never voluntarily entered into a plea bargain with the EFCC but was cajoled to do so . http://punchng.com/efcc-forced-me-to-admit-taking-n30m-from-diezani-inec-official/ |

A man , Dennis Helmer , whose wallet was stollen nearly 50 years ago during a burglary at his parents ’ house has surprisingly got his wallet back. The 78 - year - old who lives in of Westmont , New Jersey , received a call recently from one Don Williams , who told him a wallet containing documents with his name was found in the ceiling of his Bellmawr home by a contractor . The wallet ’s contents included Helmer ’ s 1957 Selective Service card , a St . Christopher Medal , a 1956 receipt for his $ 168 tuition payment to Drexel University and photos including a snapshot of Helmer posing with his Camden Catholic High School prom date, The Inquirer reported . It turns out the Williamses had had a fire , and in refurbishing their house , a contractor had found the wallet in a ceiling, along with some books and a newspaper from 1945, Helmer said . Don Williams saw Helmer ’s name in the wallet , looked him up on the web, and made contact. Helmer said the wallet was apparently stolen during a burglary at his parents ’ home in 1970 . He said he never knew it was missing until Williams called him. In May 1970 , when Helmer was 31 , he and Mary Ann had attended an anniversary party for Helmer ’s parents at his sister ’s house in Westmont . During the fete, a burglar had broken into the parents ’ house — Helmer ’ s childhood home — a mile away and snatched some jewelry. Evidently, the sneak then scuttled into Helmer ’s room and grabbed his old wallet from high school . He said the St . Christopher medal was a gift from his grandmother that has now been transferred to his current wallet . “ She said to always have it with me,” Helmer told The Inquirer. http://punchng.com/stolen-wallet-returned-to-owner-intact-after-47-years/

A primary school teacher has been sentenced to five years in prison for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old pupil because she wanted to make the “chronically depressed” boy “happy”. Katherine Gonzalez, 25, from Wisconsin in the US, was arrested on 5 March and charged with one count of first-degree sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. She pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault of a child in August, and was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Ms Gonzalez, who worked as a fifth-grade teacher at Atlas Preparatory Academy, reportedly told police she wanted the child to see that someone cared. Police said she told them the boy was “chronically depressed” and admitted telling him things to make him happy. According to the criminal complaint, the victim told police he and Ms Gonzalez had been communicating over Snapchat before she picked him up in her car, which is when the assaults took place, The Independent reported. The two touched each other’s private parts through their clothes, prosecutors said at the time. Although the relationship between Ms Gonzalez and the student never escalated to sexual intercourse, Judge Mark Sanders said it warranted a serious sentence in order to teach others to exercise better judgement. During her sentencing on Tuesday, Ms Gonzalez tearfully apologised, saying her actions had been “unthinkable”. She said treatment she had undergone in the last few months while on bail had helped her have fewer flashbacks from when she was sexually assaulted in college. Officials with the school sent a letter home to parents in March announcing that one of the teachers had been placed on administrative leave. The letter, which was signed by the executive director, of the school, reportedly stated that the Milwaukee Police Department was investigating a report that accuses a teacher at the school of having inappropriate conduct with an underage student. http://wuzupnigeria.com/2017/10/teacher-sentenced-five-years-prison-sexually-assaulting-chronically-depressed-pupil/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Spanish police in riot gear seized ballot boxes and surrounded activist - held polling stations in Catalonia Sunday as thousands flooded the streets to vote in an independence referendum banned by Madrid . As the vote officially opened, scenes of chaos erupted as police began moving in to prevent people from casting their ballots, forcing their way into one sports centre in the town of Girona where the region ’s separatist leader was due to vote . The drama unfolded after a night of tension in which thousands of people, both nervous and excited, had gathered outside polling stations before dawn to vote , with police under orders to prevent the ballot from happening . “Votarem , votarem !” Catalan for “We will vote !” chanted the crowds , many with their hands in the air. As the rain poured down in Barcelona , students and activists who had spent the night in schools designated as polling stations gathered outside with locals to “defend ” the vote from police as cars drove by honking their horns in support . Catalan television broadcast footage of crowds in towns and villages all over region , whose separatist government said early Sunday the referendum would go ahead as planned . Although the region is divided over independence, most people want to vote on the matter in legal , binding plebiscite . “The government today is in a position to affirm that we can celebrate the referendum of self - determination — not as we wanted , but ( it will have democratic) guarantees, ” Catalan government spokesman Jordi Turull told a news conference . Ballot boxes hidden But the interior ministry said it had started seizing ballot boxes , adding police were “ continuing to deploy in Catalonia ” to stop the referendum. Spain’s central government is staunchly against the vote , which has been ruled unconstitutional by the courts , and has vowed to stop it from taking place . On orders of judges and prosecutors , police have seized ballot papers, detained key organisers and shut down websites promoting the vote . But on the streets early Sunday, voters were determined to be heard. “Today is a historic day for us, it ’s terrific,” Maria Rosa Pi - Sunyer Arguimbau, 55, said after a man carrying a ballot box jumped out of a car and ran to the door , depositing it inside as two police officers looked on across the street. The ballot boxes have been at the centre of attention during the referendum crisis , with many wondering exactly where they were hidden and how they would be delivered to polling stations , as police were ordered to seize any material related to the referendum. But as people crowded in front of polling stations , they started to arrive , carried in by individuals . It was as yet unclear where they came from. Occupied schools The planned referendum has sown divisions among Catalans and stoked passions further afield in Spain. Whatever happens , Sunday’s referendum result will not be recognised by Madrid , and almost certainly not by the international community . But separatist leaders are banking on a high turnout to give legitimacy to their vote . Spain’s interior ministry said Saturday police had closed most of the 2 ,315 polling stations across Catalonia . But dozens were occupied by teachers , parents, students and activists determined to let people in anyway . Some schools designated as polling stations imagined innovative ways to stay open, organising leisure activities all over the weekend , from kids ’ pyjama parties to volleyball games. A regional government source said voting may also take place in other places like health centres and even retirement homes. Farmers and firefighters have also pledged to protect polling stations . Unity protests Earlier this week , the Mossos d ’Esquadra Catalan police warned about the risk of “disruption of public order ” if people were prevented from casting ballots. Ignacio Sellares, a 56 - year - old tax consultant at a polling station in Barcelona said he wasn ’t scared . “Having said that, if police come with weapons and water cannons, I ’m getting out of here fast!” . Madrid has sent thousands of extra police officers from other forces to Catalonia to stop the referendum from happening . On Saturday , Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont called on those going to vote to maintain a “peaceful attitude ” . That same day, thousands took to the streets across the country — including in Barcelona — in favour of national unity. As well as being critical of Puigdemont, some protesters also faulted Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy ’s conservative government for limiting its response to the crisis to repeating that the referendum is unconstitutional . “The state needs to explain the benefits of remaining united , instead of repeating all the time that the referendum is illegal ,” said Rafael Castillo, a 59 - year - old engineer at a Madrid rally , wearing a scarf with the Spanish flag around his neck . https://m.guardian.ng/news/world/police-move-in-as-catalans-rally-to-vote-in-banned-referendum/ |

Police in Catalonia had already sealed over half of the 2 ,315 polling stations in the region mid- Saturday to stop an independence referendum from taking place , the Spanish government said , as separatists remained determined to fight for their right to vote . Teachers , parents , students and activists in this wealthy northeastern region have leapt into action to defend the vote slated for Sunday , defying Madrid ’ s warnings of repercussions by occupying more than 160 schools designated as polling stations , it said . Enric Millo, the central government representative in Catalonia , told reporters 1,300 polling stations had already been sealed off . He said that 163 of those had already been occupied when they were sealed off , which meant those inside were allowed to leave but no one could go in . AFP reporters, however , visited several schools occupied by parents , students and locals where people could go in and out freely, indicating there may be more occupied buildings that have yet to be sealed off . The standoff between the central government and Catalan leaders over an independence referendum opposed by Madrid has morphed into one of the biggest crises to hit Spain since democracy was restored after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. As such , it has Spaniards the country over worried. In Spain ’s major cities , Madrid , Barcelona , Sevilla, Santander, Alicante , Valencia and Malaga, thousands protested for Spanish unity. “ We shouldn’ t have got to this point. We’ve arrived at a point of no return ,” said Fernando Cepeda , a 58 - year - old engineer , a Spanish flag tied around his waist in front of Madrid ’s city hall . – Call to remain peaceful – Catalan separatist leaders and organisers of “committees to protect the referendum” stressed that everyone must remain peaceful . In one incident , though , someone fired a pellet gun on Friday night at a group of people standing in front of an occupied high school in the Catalan town of Manlleu , lightly injuring three people, police said . The referendum has sown divisions among Catalans themselves , with the region deeply split on independence , even if a large majority want to be allowed to settle the matter in a legal vote . Authorities in Madrid have instructed police to ensure no votes are cast in a referendum that the courts have ruled unconstitutional . For days, they have been seizing electoral items such as ballot papers while prosecutors have ordered the closure of websites linked to the vote and the detention of key members of the team organising the referendum . But those for the vote have mobilised. On Friday, tractors paraded through Barcelona , some decked with the “ Estelada ” , the separatists ’ flag of red-and- yellow stripes with a white star on a blue chevron . They and firefighters have pledged to protect polling stations . From district to district , people gathered to form “Committees to protect the referendum” , using the Telegram messaging app to get organised and urging everyone to remain peaceful, said an AFP correspondent who saw some of the messages . The move appeared to be partly coordinated by a platform of “schools open for the referendum . ” – Mobilisation will continue – Carles Riera, a lawmaker in the regional parliament for the radical CUP party , part of Catalonia ’s separatist coalition , vowed that mobilisation would continue after Sunday’s vote — if the “yes ” camp won but Madrid opposed the result , as is almost certain . “ We’re in a process of popular mobilisation that is going to last a while ,” he told reporters. “ This democratic wave , this level of auto- organisation will have to keep going for a long time to defend the republic . ” On Friday, Spain’s education ministry said in a statement that head teachers in Catalonia “ were not exempt from liability ” if they cooperated and allowed their schools to remain open for the vote . Some schools have imagined innovative ways to circumvent an order that public spaces cannot be used for the referendum by organising leisure activities all over the weekend , from pyjama parties for the kids to volleyball games. Barcelona ’ s Joan Brossa high school , for instance , advertised a series of activities for Friday and Saturday , including film screenings , football matches and Zumba dance fitness classes. It remained unclear though how people would be able to enter sealed - off schools on Sunday to vote , even if they are occupied. The Mossos d ’Esquadra Catalan police have warned about the risk of “ disruption of public order ” if efforts are made to prevent people from casting ballots. Madrid has sent thousands of extra police officers from other forces to Catalonia — which accounts for one fifth of Spain ’s economy — to stop the referendum from happening . Catalan Vice - President Oriol Junqueras has said that there are alternatives for citizens to vote , without saying what they are . http://punchng.com/police-seal-off-1300-polling-stations-in-catalonia-resistance-continues/ |

Even as back in the days musician, Eedris Abdulkareem , tongue - lashed D’banj in a recent video , calling him “ stupid” to have left Don Jazzy , the Kokomaster has refused to retaliate but rather gave a subtle throwback by saying Eedris insulted people who are young enough to be his children. The controversial singer had in the said video that surfaced online recently , took some of his younger colleagues to the cleaners while saying D’banj “lacked talent and all he has is ‘razzmatazz ’” . Saturday Beats caught up with the Kokomaster during the one year anniversary of his initiative, CREAM , an acronym that stands for Creative, Reality , Entertainment , Arts and Music and he bared his mind on Eedris ’ outburst . He told Saturday Beats that he felt Eedris could have handled the matter in a better way . The Kokomaster said , “At first , I did not see the video where Eedris spoke about me and initially , I thought it was something else till people sent me the video . I have seen different videos of him talking about different artistes that are young enough to be his kids . I would have thought that if he was such a role model , there were better ways he could pass his message across but I have nothing against him. I have nothing more to say about him. I feel people just have different ways of expressing themselves . ” He also used the opportunity to talk about his son and what being a father means to him. “ Being a father is very humbling . I have always acted as a father to a lot of young artistes from the days of Mo Hits but now , I have a child of my own . When he was born , I was in the hospital and as I held his hands , it made me realise that to whom much is given, much is expected . This is someone ’s life that I am responsible for . It is not just about fatherhood but now I have a family . Before I became a family man , I took decisions without looking back. I could decide to sleep on the Mainland ; I could decide to chill with my friends . But now , I have responsibilities. I have people that I am responsible for and we are growing together . The good thing is that I have a great partner and I love it . Each time I look into the eyes of my son , I know that it is real; I have to keep working harder,” he said . Apparently impressed about the success of his CREAM initiative within a year and how it has changed lives , the singer said , “The CREAM platform was valued by KPMG and that is why we put out their findings. Nine months into the launch of the platform , we employed them and they helped with documentation . We have not done any other auditing since then and I was surprised about their findings because this is a platform that we just launched. It is an idea that God gave us and I worked on it with my wonderful team and for it to be valued at over a hundred million is humbling . I am sure that as I speak with you, the value of the initiative has increased because we have more investors and we are thinking on expanding to other countries . I am sure that in the next few years , we would have advanced. However , that is not the point of the CREAM initiative. It was established to serve as a platform that can encourage talents in Nigeria and I am glad it is achieving its purpose . ” http://punchng.com/eedris-insulted-artistes-young-enough-to-be-his-children-dbanj/ |
A group of prisoners busted out of jail this week , burgled a bargain store — and then broke back in and returned to their cells , the police have said . Mississippi News reported that the inmates, identified as Levontaye Ellington, Travis Baker , Maurice Robertson and Jacquiez Williams broke out of the Holmes- Humphreys County Correctional Facility in Lexington Tuesday by hopping a fence . Once in the clear, the men walked less than a mile to a Dollar General chain store after closing and swiped anything they could grab . “ They stole cigarettes , cigarette lighters , phones and just items they felt they could sell in jail,” Lexington Police Chief Robert Kirklin said according to the report . According to NYpost , rather than extend their newfound freedom, the foursome inexplicably snuck back into the jail , undetected , baffling police. “ You’re already in jail, but you want to break out and break back in?” the chief said . “That is just something . I heard it all .” The inmates denied their involvement in the scheme , even though they were caught on store surveillance footage , according to the report . “ Just looking at the type of clothing they had on and just one of the bags they had put some of the merchandise in, ” police were able to pin the inmates to the crime , Kirklin said . The inmates were charged with commercial burglary . http://punchng.com/inmates-sneak-back-into-prison-after-breaking-out-of-jail-to-steal/ |
