Sports / Arsenal Want Allegri Or Luis Enrique by Inspire01: 3:31pm On May 07, 2018
Arsenal want Massimiliano Allegri or Luis Enrique to be their next manager but both have concerns about taking the job because of the club’s management structure, according to Sky sources.
Arsene Wenger bid an emotional farewell to the Emirates on Sunday ahead of his departure this summer and the search to find his replacement is well underway.
Arsenal appointed a head of football relations (Raul Sanllehi) and a head of recruitment (Sven Mislintat) last year and the new manager would have to work closely with both.
Allegri, who has two years left on his contract at Juventus, looks set to lead the club to a fourth successive Serie A title this season.
The Italian is the favourite to succeed Wenger, while Carlo Ancelotti and Liverpool assistant coach Zeljko Buvac are also still among the frontrunners.
Former Barcelona manager Enrique is ready to return to the game after taking a year off following his departure from the Nou Camp last summer.
Mikel Arteta has also been linked to the job. The former Gunners midfielder is working as an assistant to Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola.

Politics / Voters’ Register, PVC Not Used In Kano LG Polls, Says INEC by Inspire01: 4:57pm On May 04, 2018
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that neither its election register nor permanent voter cards (PVC) was used for the Kano State Local Government elections.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who addressed journalists on Friday on the findings of the investigative panel that probed allegations of preponderance of underage voters in Kano and other adjourning states,
said there is nothing to suggest that the commission’s election register contained underage voters’ names.
He said the terms of reference of the probe panel was to ascertain claims that the voters’ register compiled by INEC contained underage voters’ names and alleged incidents of underage voting in the election.
Yakubu said the committee submitted that though Kano State requested and received the voter’s register, it was only used in few polling units.
The INEC panel said: “The register was only sighted in a few polling units. In fact, accreditation using the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) largely did not take place.”
Giving more details about the findings, Yakubu said that since the voters’ register was substantially not used to accredit voters for the election, it was logical to conclude that whatever transpired at the polls would not impugn on the integrity of INEC’ s register.
He further said that the committee recommended that henceforth, INEC and states Independent Electoral Commission (SIECs) should collaborate more on issues relating to the conduct of elections.
When asked whether it would not be proper to conduct a more elaborate investigation on the issue of underage voters, Yakubu said INEC will take advantage of the Kano episode to carry out a nationwide scrutiny of the national election register.
He assured Nigerians that there will be room for collaboration between INEC and all stakeholders to update and improve the register to eliminate all ineligible registrants from it.
The INEC boss also said that the panel recommended that the commission should work with SIECs to improve the quality of all elections conducted in the country.
Earlier, the INEC chairman had exonerated the management of the electoral body from any charge of inaction on the issue of underage voting, stating that not a single complaint has been received from political parties or stakeholders on the matter.
He said instead, some persons, including a political party had taken to the media impugning on the image and integrity of the commission.
He went on to say that the present voters’ register was the one complied last on 2011 but was updated in 2014.
He said that before the 2011 general election, the register was full of errors, adding that the commission found that most of the fingerprints were missing.
In addition, he said there were multiple entries in the register.
According to the INEC boss, the register has been subjected to continuous clean-up and updating.
Yakubu emphatically said that the country’s election register as it is today is a dependable document capable of delivering credible elections.
On what the commission plans to do to engender more trust and confidence on the election register, Yakubu said that INEC will carry out a nationwide cleaning up exercise which will involve all stakeholders.
He also said that the commission will put out samples of the voter register and make same available to political parties for all to make observations and help fish out ineligible voters.
On the botched recall of the senator representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye, Yakubu said contrary to amounts being speculated to have been spent on the exercise, the actual amount spent was a little over N100 million.
He said the verification exercise took place in all the polling units within the senatorial district.

Politics / IPOB Tackles Trump For Inviting Buhari To US by Inspire01: 10:11am On May 02, 2018
NNEWI— INDIGENOUS People of Biafra, IPOB Monday tackled American President, Donald Trump for inviting President Muhammadu Buhari for talk on democracy, saying there is nothing democratic about the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration to justify his invitation to the White House for political and economic discussions.
A statement by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, said it would like to know if President Trump, by virtue of the invitation to Buhari, is justifying the cold blooded massacre and illegal detention of tens of innocent Biafrans that rallied in Igweocha, Port Harcourt, by the present administration in Nigeria, on that fateful day of January 20, 2017 during Trump’s inauguration.
According to IPOB, “What the Trump administration appears to be doing is inadvertently giving the green light to the brutal anti-democratic regimes in Africa of which Buhari’s APC is one, to murder and detain at will, innocent people and dissenting voices. If not, there is nothing democratic about ‘Buhari’ to justify his invitation to the White House for any discussion.
“Whoever it is at the United States Embassy in Abuja, responsible for compiling and transmitting reports of the regime’s atrocities back to the State Department in Washington, failed woefully in his or her duty, because the Buhari regime is the worst government in the history of Nigeria.”
IPOB statement read further: “We would like to seize this opportunity of the meeting between President Trump and ‘Buhari’ to draw the attention of the American people to the plight of Biafrans in detention across Nigeria, especially the four in a maximum security prison simply because they came out to celebrate with millions of other people around the world the day President Donald Trump was sworn into office.
“It is also important that we remind the US presidency and the good people of United States of America, since it appears the US embassy in Nigeria failed to do so, of the enormity of the brutality and cold blooded massacre of innocent citizens merely exercising their right to freedom of assembly on that fateful day of January 20, 2017.
“There is something morally repugnant about ‘Buhari’ visiting Washington to discuss democracy when his administration is not democratic. The failure of US government to hold this regime to account is what may have emboldened and encouraged them to embark on the wholesale ethnic cleansing of parts of Benue State.
“IPOB would like to know if President Trump, by virtue of this invitation to Buhari, is justifying the cold blooded massacre and illegal detention of tens of innocent Biafrans that rallied in Igweocha, Port Harcourt, on that fateful day of January 20, 2017 during his inauguration.
“What the Trump administration appear to be doing is inadvertently giving the green light to brutal anti-democratic regimes in Africa of which the ‘Buhari’ APC is one, to murder and detain at will, if not there is nothing democratic about ‘Buhari’ to justify his invitation to the White House for any discussion on governance and democracy.
“Whoever it is at the United States embassy in Abuja, responsible for compiling and transmitting reports of regime atrocities back to the State Department in Washington, failed woefully in his or her duty, because this current ‘Buhari’ regime is the worst government in the history of Nigeria.”
According to IPOB, “the present APC government in Nigeria led by President Buhari has nothing qualifying it to be given the honour of visiting the office of the leader of the free world, both in terms of brutality, wickedness and total disregard for democratic norms and rule of law.”
“Welcoming Buhari to the White House means welcoming tyranny into the bowel of democracy. It sends out the message that United States of America is standing shoulder to shoulder with a mass murderer and tyrannical government, contrary to its stated objectives.
“What those who are behind this visit of President Buhari to the White House may have succeeded in doing is give the official President Trump administration endorsement to Nigerian President Buhari, to go on killing and locking people up at will, including those that came out on the streets to celebrate President Trump’s victory.”
IPOB said “the visit by President Buhari to White House makes a mockery of the ideals, values of the founding principles of the United States of America”, adding that “if the man responsible for the illegal detention and brutal murder of those celebrating the election of a US president is being welcomed to White House as if nothing happened, one wonders if President Trump is not aware of the 20th of January 2017 massacre at Igweocha, Port Harcourt, or the US mission to Nigeria, especially the US ambassador, failed to inform the White House and President Trump about the incident.”
IPOB named Mr. Ikenna Igwe Mazi, Mr. Uchenna Innocent, Mr. Bright Sunday Okoro and Mr. Chidinma Godwin Nwafor, as some of the people arrested and until date still languishing in prison for no other reason than the fact they were celebrating Trump victory.
“They were detained on a trumped up charge of treasonable felony for celebrating the inauguration of a US president that is today wining and dinning with the same man that threw them in jail. There is something morally repugnant about this. The very least President Trump can do is to demand that ‘Buhari’ immediately release all IPOB activists and other political detainees across Nigeria.”

Politics / Melaye’s Recall: Not Many Petitioners Turn Up To Verify Signatures by Inspire01: 7:41pm On Apr 28, 2018
The Independent National Electoral Commission cannot be held responsible for the poor turnout of petitioners in
Saturday ’s verification of signatures for the recall of Sen . Dino Melaye, an official has said .
The INEC Federal Commissioner in -charge of Kogi , Kwara and Nasarawa states , Alhaji Mohammed Haruna, made the statement in Lokoja shortly after the end of the exercise .
Haruna said that the main concern of INEC was to ensure transparency in the process , insisting that the organisation was neutral in the bid to recall Melaye from the Senate .
“Turnout is not our problem; turnout is the problem of parties concerned , ours is to ensure transparency ,” Haruna said .
Commenting on insinuations that INEC might tamper with the wish of the people, the commissioner said that nothing like that would happen , stressing that the agency had no interest in who won or lost in the matter .
“ Nothing untoward will happen , I assure you. Whatever happened at the polling units is what INEC will announce ,” he stated .
Commenting on the mix up in the list of petitioners , Haruna said that mistakes in such exercise was normal but gave an assurance that the mistakes would be corrected .
He lauded the peaceful conduct of the people before and during the exercise.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that in Koton Karfe and Lokoja , the people conducted themselves well , although the turnout was poor .
At Ukwo polling unit in Koton Karfe, 18 out of 440 petitioners came for the verification , while at Oworo polling unit in Felele area of Lokoja , none of the 815 petitioners showed up .
Also at polling unit 004 of Ward 3 in Lokoja , 32 out of the 1 ,251 petitioners showed up .
During the exercise , there was no case of malfunctioning of card reader machines while security personnel adequately manned the polling centres .
Melaye, representing Kogi West in the Assembly, has been struggling to retain his seat following a petition by some of his constituents in 2017 that he was not representing them well .
The senator’s accusers gathered signatures to demand his recall but Melaye, who accused the state Governor , Mr . Yahaya Bello, of being the mastermind of the plot , mobilised his supporters to resist the move.
He subsequently approached the court to stop the process but could not get the relief he sought at the Court of Appeal .

Politics / Samuel Melaye, Dino Melaye’s Brother, Docked, Remanded In Prison For Obstruction by Inspire01: 8:11pm On Apr 26, 2018
ABUJA – An Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Mpape, has ordered that a brother to the embattled Senator representing Kogi West, Mr. Dino Melaye, Samuel, and three others, should be remanded in Kuje Prison.

The court held that the quartet who were docked by the Nigerian Police Force for obstruction, should remain in prison custody till April 30 when the merit of their bail application will be considered.

Those the court remanded alongside Samuel Melaye were Amaefula David, Pius Inyang and Mohammed Wazari.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the First Information Report, FIR, Police entered against them on Wednesday.

The charge followed the incident at Area One, Roundabout in Abuja, which botched alleged moves to forcibly relocate Melaye to Lokoja in Kogi State to answer to pending criminal allegations against him.
The embattled lawmaker was said to have jumped out of the Police van conveying him to Lokoja, and was allegedly whisked away by his supporters who were said to have blocked the road with their vehicle.

Melaye was subsequently re-arrested at a private hospital where he was admitted for treatment, and later transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja by the Police.

Meantime, in the FIR Police filed before the Magistrate Court, it slammed the four defendants with criminal conspiracy, obstruction of public servant from performing his lawful duties, as well as abatement and assault on police officers.

Offences the defendants committed were said to be contrary to sections 97, 85, 267 and 173 of the Penal Code Law.
