Politics / Senators Hunkuyi, Shehu Sani To Dump APC by Inspire01: 11:14pm On May 25, 2018
The Sen Suleiman Hunkuyi- led faction of the All Progressives Congress in Kaduna State says it is considering defecting to another political party barely few months to the 2019 general elections .
The group, known as APC Akida , in a statement in Kaduna on Friday said it has concluded a review of the state of the party and governance issues in the state and the nation and was considering leaving the party they worked hard to put in place .
The group said it would take the decision “ if there is no visible evidence of success in addressing the damaging levels of alienation and frustration among the millions of party faithful in Kaduna State ” .
Prominent among the group are Sen Shehu Seni, Isah Ashiri , former APC governorship aspirant , Mr . Mataimaki Tom Maiyashi, among others.
Mr . Tom Maiyashi, Chairman of the group, who signed the statement said two recent events in the state chapter of the party have confirmed its fears of the absence of credible and legitimate party leadership .
These , he said , were capable of destroying the credibility and popularity of the party.
“ The party congresses , and the Local Government Councils elections , in Kaduna State have confirmed the fears that the absence of credible and legitimate party leadership in our state will destroy its credibility and popularity .
“ These are fears which the Akida group had raised since the early days of the administration of Nasir el - Rufai .
“ The congresses have exposed the contempt for popular participation by the Governor and his hand - picked choir.
“ Our party has lost massive popularity and goodwill as a result of attempts to force the choices of an unpopular government on party faithful ” , he said .
Maiyashi said those who emerged as leaders of the party from the congresses enjoy no support or legitimacy among party members .

Politics / Only Lazy Nigerians Are Hungry Under Buhari, Customs Boss Says by Inspire01: 7:41am On May 23, 2018
The Comptroller - General of the Nigeria Customs Service , Hameed Ali , on Tuesday, said only lazy Nigerians would claim to be hungry under President Muhammadu Buhari .
Ali said this while enumerating what he called the achievements of the present administration in agriculture when he led members of the Buhari Support Organisation to the Presidential Villa , Abuja .
According to him , manna does not fall from heaven, hence the lazy must be hungry .
He said , “ What more can we say in terms of growth of wealth? People say we are hungry . Of course , the lazy must be hungry because if you do not work hard , manna doesn ’t fall from heaven .
“ So , when people say we are hungry , there was never a time in Nigeria that food was dropped in the mouth of the people and there can never be .”
He told Buhari that Nigerians were behind him in his quest to seek re - election in 2019.
“ All we want to say on behalf of Nigerians is that we are solidly behind you in this second term bid ,” Ali told Buhari .
The Customs boss attributed Buhari ’ s decision to lead the country even when he is above 70 years to his love for Nigeria.
He said if he was in Buhari ’s shoes , he won ’t take up such a responsibility .
He said , “ I have said it and I will repeat it here , Mr . President , with all due respect, at 70 plus, with good retirement benefits and with your house in Daura, if I were you , I will see no reason to be in this arena .
“But why are you here? It is because you love this great country . You left your comfort to serve Nigeria and that is why those of us who love you for who you are must follow you and ensure that your second term in this country becomes a reality .”
Ali said Buhari ’s administration had changed Nigeria, claiming that the country had grown because of the discipline the President had instilled in the financial sector .
He said the nonchalant attitudes of siphoning money were no longer in existence.
The Customs boss said he had been stepping on toes while carrying out his duties because of the confidence he had that nobody could approach Buhari to stop him from doing his job .

Crime / FG Investigator: I Was Sacked For Refusing To Go After Opposition by Inspire01: 6:55am On May 23, 2018
The disengaged Special Investigator to the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on Recovery of Public Property (SPIP), Mr. Victor Uwajeh, has alleged that his recent removal was because he refused to investigate some serving senators, including Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and other opposition People Democratic Party (PDP) stalwarts.
He also mentioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Senator Jonah Jang, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, Femi Fani-Kayode, among the list of persons given to him to investigate.
Uwajeh, a private investigator and former consultant to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was recently employed by the Okoi Obono Obla-led presidential panel but was disengaged about a month later.
While giving the reasons for his disengagement in a statement he signed yesterday, the London-based private investigator alleged that his refusal to act on the courier documents sent to him from Nigeria by the government which comprises some names perceived to be enemies of the current administration was responsible for his disengagement.
According to the statement: “It was the procedure of the Panel to courier documents to me from Nigeria for dispatch to various agencies in the United Kingdom and worldwide.
“Soon after, I realised that the panel has a mindset towards certain individuals and groups by the documents it sent to me.
“Documents sent to me from Abuja to dispatch to the Serious Fraud Office and Home Office, Metropolitan Police, FBI and EUROPOL had the names of the following senators: Senate President Saraki, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Senator Albert Bassey Akpan and Senator Stella Adaeze Oduah.”
Uwajeh revealed that he had suggested some names of APC members “who are high looters that I recommended for proper investigation but it was turned down.
“This raised a red flag and as a professional, I made my complaint immediately and made my position known to Okoi Obono Obla to transmit to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.
“I told him that I will not be a party to one sided investigation to muscle in the opposition and persecute them. I made my position known that I am ready to expose corruption and recover stolen assets as a professional but will not be involved in the politics of “pull then down” in Nigeria.
“My refusal to dance to the tune of the Government and SIPP led to my disengagement.
“After meeting in London on 18th April, 2018 with some officials during the CHOGM, it was evident that I will not bulge in my position not to go against the ethics of my profession by investigating only the opposition.
“As soon as they arrived Nigeria on April 23, 2018, they drafted a letter to disengage me. They kept the letter and wanted me to change my mind but I refused. On April, 27 2018, they sent me a backdated letter of disengagement dated April 23, 2018.
“In the said letter it was alleged that I had a criminal allegation against me pending in court as the reason for my disengagement which is laughable.”
Uwajeh said any right-thinking person should question why it took the government of President Muhammadu Buhari a full month to know that he had a case in court.
“My refusal has led to a sustained assault on my person by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami.
“My refusal to work with the APC-led government to humiliate the so-called enemies of government has led me into exile. The Nigeria Police led by Ibrahim Kpotun Idris has continued to side with Senator Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba (Andy Uba) to stop him from paying me my professional fees. IG Idris is an expert in setting people up and twisting issues to incriminate his enemies.
“ Malami, Idris and Mohammed Etsu should note that they cannot continue to be in this position forever and remember that power is transient.
“I will continue to maintain my dignity even in the face of a gang up against me.
“Nigeria can only move forward when the fight against corruption is not selective but holistic no matter whose ox is gored.”

Politics / SGF Unveils N64m Website, Says Critics Not Govt’s Enemies by Inspire01: 3:46pm On May 21, 2018
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation , Mr . Boss Mustapha , on Monday inaugurated what he described as the upgraded website of his office , www.osgf .gov.ng .
Speaking at a brief event in his office in Abuja , Mustapha put the cost of the upgrading, which he said included procurement of laptops , training of officials and consultancy services , at N 64m
The Federal Government had allocated N 65m for the project in the 2017 Budget .
“ There was a contract in 2017. The figure in public domain . It is about N 64m including procurement of laptops , training , consultancy services.
“ The contract was awarded by the Bureau of Public Procurement in accordance with the Procurement Act ,” Mustapha said when he was asked the cost of the upgrade .
The SGF explained that the desire of his office to operate a functional website that will deliver information and policy thrust of the present administration formed the decision to upgrade the old website which he said was based on old technology , hence limited features and security of content.
He said it was important to make information on government activities readily available to Nigerians and other stakeholders because information drives investment and development worldwide .
He described the revamped e -participation platform as the major achievement of the new website .
Through this platform , Mustapha said members of the public would be free to
request for information from government , submit ideas, and lodge complaints .
Such requests , ideas or complaints , he explained , would elicit timely response from government .
He said arrangements were being concluded to train officials from Ministries , Departments and Agencies who will be handling the different segments of the website .
Mustapha said those who criticise government do not necessarily hate the government .
“ When people criticise government , it is not that they hate government . They want government to do better and for them to see improvement ,” he said .
The Permanent Secretary, General Services , Office of the SGF , Mr . Olusegun Adekunle , said the decision to upgrade the website was taken so that it can serve better.
Adekunle said the upgrade would add value to the dissemination of information of government activities .
He added that each of the six offices in the SGF ’s office will have content managers before they can upload content.
He said there was a plan to train initial 50 officers for the six offices .

Crime / CJN Panel Blames Prosecutors, Others For Corruption Trial Delays by Inspire01: 8:11am On May 21, 2018
The Corruption and Financial Crimes Cases Trial Monitoring Committee inaugurated by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnogen, about six and half months ago has submitted its interim report to the National Judicial Council . It lamented the delays being suffered by corruption and financial crimes cases.
In a statement by its Director of Information, Mr . Soji Oye , on Sunday , the NJC said the interim report of COTRIMCO blamed the prosecution , the courts and prisons for the delays .
Oye said the committee ’s interim report contained “ findings from discussions with heads of courts and observations made from the surprise visits of the members to courts handling corruption and financial crimes cases in some parts of country .”
The CJN, in his capacity as the chairman of the NJC, inaugurated the Justice Suleiman Galadima - led COTRIMCO on November 1 , 2017 mandating it to, among others, identify the causes of delays in corruption and financial crimes cases and recommend solutions.
As of November 26, 2017 , NJC said COTRIMCO had received the details of 2 , 306 ongoing cases which fell under the committee ’s mandate .
The committee ’s interim report blamed all the stakeholders including the courts handling the trials and the agencies prosecuting them as the causes of the delays in the trials.
But the prosecution was apportioned the bulk of the blames .
According to the committee, the prosecution is responsible for the delays in many ways including , lack of requisite experience and competence, reliance on irrelevant documentary evidence, multiplicity of charges , collusion of prosecutors with defence lawyers , non-adherence to court rules \procedures and amendment of charges after commencement of trial,
Oye said , “The Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee has identified poor prosecution , absence of counsel for parties in court , reliance on irrelevant documentary evidence, multiplicity of charges , non- adherence to court rules \procedures, retirement\transfer of Judges , re - assignment of cases to start de novo , amendment to charges after commencement of trial, and cumbersome record transmission process to Court of Appeal amongst others as some of the factors militating against speedy disposal of corruption cases .
“ These facts are contained in the interim report presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Retired Hon. Justice Suleiman Galadima ( CFR ) , at the 86th meeting of the National Judicial Council .
“The committee distilled the issues from its findings from discussions with Heads of courts and observations made from the surprise visits of the members to courts handling corruption and financial crimes cases in some parts of the country .”
Elements of poor prosecution , according to COTRIMCO are, “ offenders are charged to court before proper investigations of the charges are done , and afterwards , expecting the court to detain such alleged offenders till conclusion of their investigations ; inadequate prosecuting personnel at the prosecution agencies ; and that some prosecutors lack the requisite experience to prosecute corruption cases , which invariably leads to poor handling of such cases .”
The committee also said it identified “ lack of commitment on the part of some prosecutors and collusion between them and defence counsel to pervert justice either by stalling the trial of cases or achieving pre- determined results ; and that there is no threshold to the number of witnesses the prosecution calls .”
It also said there were the issues of “ inadequate funding of prosecution agencies to carry out thorough investigations into the corruption cases with attendant low quality prosecution cases ; and frequent requests for adjournment by the prosecutors.”
On issue of duplication of cases , the committee submitted that “the prosecution in most cases duplicate charges which could be up to 170 against a defendant, but at the end, are unable to substantiate them , leading to the discharge of such defendant.”
The committee was also said to have “ observed the issue of multiplicity of cases involving the same defendants, and on similar subject matters going on in different courts at the same time .”
On the contributions of courts to the delays , COTRIMCO was said to have identified “ retirement\transfer of judges handling such cases ” as a major factor .
“ When this happens, such cases which may have gone far are re - assigned to another judge to start de - novo ( afresh) ,” Oye quoted the committee as stating .
It blamed the courts for , among others, “ granting of remand order by a court without following up to ensure suspects are brought to court; and inadequate provision for proper record keeping and shelving of court files and other relevant documents in some courts.”
The rest of the court’s contributions to the problem according to the committee are “cumbersome process of transmission of records from trial courts which impedes the early disposal of appeals; and difficulties associated with ascertaining addresses for service of process by bailiffs.”
The committee only blamed the prisons for “ failing to remind court of subsisting order to reproduce suspects in court and most times lack means to convey suspects to the law court .”
As part of the solutions to the problem , the committee recommended among others proper funding of the judiciary and the prosecution agencies as well as use of professionals , such as accountants, auditors, e .t .c ., to investigate high profile and complicated cases .
It also recommended “ proper training for prosecution in the area of investigation , especially in the area of Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015; need for prosecuting agencies to have competent prosecution departments manned by qualified personnel ; synergy between the various prosecution agencies to enhance proper prosecution of criminal cases ; and need for training and re -training of staff of court handling criminal cases .”’
