Fresh information from Liberia suggests that the late Patrick Sawyer, the first man to die of Ebola in Nigeria, was in fact quarantined by Liberian health authorities prior to boarding a flight to Nigeria. Patrick Sawyer of LiberiaPatrick Sawyer of Liberia ABC 5 THIS DAY reports that Liberian Minister of State II for Foreign Affairs, Sr. Nurudeen Mohammed, said that this information arose upon discussion of talks between President Johnson-Sirleaf and Nigeria's Ambassador to Liberia, Chigozie Oby-Nadozie. Sawyer's sister had allegedly died of the virus before his trip to Nigeria, a tragedy that is said to have been his method of contracting the virus. Vice President of ECOWAS, Dr. Toga Mcintosh, further confirmed that Sawyer did in fact flee medical watch placed upon him after his sister's reported death. At a briefing today, Mcintosh said "because he had contact with somebody who died from Ebola, he was quarantined in his own country, but he evaded the quarantine and came to Nigeria." The minister encourages affected West African countries to come together to combat the crisis, rather than shuffle the responsibility. Sawyer is reported to have acted erratically and looked sick on CCTV footage from Liberia's James Spriggs Payne airport in Monrovia, Liberia, raising security suspicion there. Despite this, he was allowed to fly out of the country. http://saharareporters.com/2014/08/07/ebola-new-details-suggest-patrick-sawyer-escaped-quarantine-liberia-heading-nigeria

Amid the growing concerns about the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. A university in South Korean rescinded an invitation for three Nigerians to attend a conference and a group of South Korean medical volunteers also called off a trip to West Africa. Duksung Women’s University in Seoul said in a statement that the school “politely withdrew” its invitation for three Nigerian students to attend an international conference that it is co-hosting with the United Nations starting from Monday. Fear about a possible spread of the deadly virus had prompted a student from the university to post a plea on the country’s presidential office Web site, asking for the cancellation of the entire event. The university has said it was going ahead with the conference to be attended by students, including 28 from Africa. Since February, more than 700 people in West Africa have died from Ebola, a hemorrhagic virus with a death rate of up to 90 percent of those infected. The fatality rate in the current epidemic is about 60 percent. Reuters reports that South Korea on Monday issued a special travel advisory asking people to refrain from visiting Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, while a group of South Korean medical volunteer workers scrapped an annual trip to African countries including Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana scheduled for August. South Korean bloggers have posted online petitions, urging South Korean missionaries working in the region to be barred from returning home. West African leaders agreed last week to take stronger measures to try to bring the worst outbreak of Ebola under control and prevent it from spreading outside the region, including steps to isolate rural communities ravaged by the disease. Meanwhile, an American doctor struck by the deadly Ebola virus while in Liberia and brought to the United States for treatment in a special isolation ward is improving, the top U.S. health official said on Sunday. http://dailypost.ng/2014/08/04/ebola-south-korean-university-withdraws-invitation-to-nigerian-students/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

vedaxcool: The NSCIA recommends that if Christians do not accept the observance of weekend Sabbath as a concession in a multi-religious Nations, then neutral days of Wednesday and Thursday should be declared work-free instead. But if Sunday and Sabbath must be observed, we must be honest enough to concede the absolute needs of others. “If Nigeria is said to be secular, it has to be total and not half hearted. “Lame! ![]() |

Panic is spreading in Anambra State, South-East Nigeria, over fears that the deadly Ebola virus might have reached the state. Tension rose when the news spread that the corpse of an indigene of the state had been brought in from Liberia and deposited in a mortuary in Oyi Local Government Area of the state. However it has not been confirmed that the deceased died of the Ebola virus. In a telephone interview with Channels Television on Thursday evening, the State Commissioner for Health, Jehospahphat Akabuike, confirmed the incident, saying, however, that the mortuary has been cordoned off and all the attendants and workers have been quarantined, pending further tests. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has reassured Nigerians and other residents that there is no new case of Ebola outbreak in the country. Addressing a joint news conference in Abuja, Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, said that two persons who had primary contact with the late Patrick Sawyer, who died of Ebola virus in Lagos have been quarantined, while 69 others were under close surveillance. The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, who also spoke at the news conference said that the Federal Government was doing all it could to ensure that no other case of Ebola is recorded in the country. http://www.channelstv.com/2014/07/31/ebola-scare-hit-anambra/ |

The military, on Friday afternoon, announced the arrest of one of those behind the attack on the convoy of former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari. The Defence Headquarters’ statement uploaded on their official website did not disclose the identity of the person taken into captivity but says troops are holding a man suspected to be connected with the explosion. According to the military, “the young man who was apprehended by the military patrol team that swooped into the area immediately after the explosion, disguised as a woman clad in female garb” to avoid arrest. “Youths in the area attempted to mob him while he was being arrested but were restrained by troops who quickly whisked him away in an armoured personnel carrier”, it explained. The suspect is currently being interrogated by security agencies in a bid to ascertain his links.
