Mr. Fani-Kayode says the APC spokesperson has seven days to retract his comments. A former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has fired the first salvo in a series of threats and counter-threats of legal action between the ex-minister and Lai Mohammed, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress, APC, giving Mr. Mohammed a seven-day ultimatum to apologize to him. In a letter titled “Libel Publication Against Chief Femi Fani Kayode Published in Vanguard Newspaper of the 30th of June 2014”, addressed to Mr. Mohammed, Mr. Fani-Kayode’s lawyer demanded an immediate retraction of a publication by the APC spokesperson, in three national newspapers approved by the former minister himself. The letter, dated 7th July, 2014, also demanded that the retraction contain “an unreserved apology” to Mr. Fani-Kayode, offer for damages, and a seven day ultimatum to carry out the demands. “It will amount to a serious gamble if you treat this letter with levity, but if you so decide to do, the gamble is clearly yours,” said the letter signed by Nnenna Makwe, on behalf of Ahmed Raji and Co. Mr. Fani-Kayode has, in the last one week, been locked in an exchange of brickbats with the APC spokesperson, culminating in the latter describing the former as “a pathological liar and a shameless coward.” It began last Monday when the former minister, during an interview on Channels Television, described Boko Haram as the armed wing of the opposition APC, a reason, he claimed, made the party to be sympathetic of the terrorist group. But the APC had responded swiftly in a statement, denying the claims and threatened a court action against Mr. Fani-Kayode. . . http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/164509-fani-kayodes-lawyer-writes-lai-mohammed-demands-apology-2.html |

The Edo State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, impeached the Deputy Speaker of the House – Festus Ebea – on allegations of misconduct and misdemeanour and elected Victor Edoror to replace him. This act thickens an on-going crisis which began after four members of the House were suspended on allegation of misconduct. After their suspension, the four lawmakers and five other members of the State House held a session and suspended the speaker and few other members of the House, insisting that they had been suspended without an offence. Prior to their suspension, the suspended lawmakers had decamped from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party. There were talks that the Deputy Speaker, Ebea was also making plans to decamp to the PDP. However, 15 Lawmakers belonging to the APC carried out the impeachment at the Old Assembly Complex inside the Edo State Government House owing to ongoing renovations at the premises of the Edo State House of Assembly. “This renovation work going on there was caused by the fact that the former Deputy Speaker and a group of aides forcibly entered the place, destroying doors and windows. “Of course, we had to repair them and put them back to shape,” Speaker of the House, Uyi Igbe said, maintaining that they will have to continue carrying out their duties in the old Chambers for now and that the crisis has not stopped them from working. Although 15 lawmakers sat for plenary, 16 signed the impeachment. The 16th person was reportedly Abdulrazak Momoh, the PDP lawmaker yet to be suspended. Our correspondent reported heavy Police presence at the premises of the Edo State House of Assembly. http://www.channelstv.com/2014/07/02/edo-house-of-assembly-impeach-deputy-speaker-festus-ebea/ |
THE Emir of Kano and former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Lamido Sanusi, has discontinued the suit filed against President Goodluck Jonathan, the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police, essentially challenging his suspension from office as CBN governor on February 20, 2014. The plaintiff had, by a notice of discontinuance, dated July 1, 2014 and filed same day, discontinued the suit against all the defendants in the matter. The former CBN governor had, in a suit filed against the defendants at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, challenged his suspension as the CBN governor. In a preliminary objection filed by counsel for the president, Dr Fabian Ajogwu, and counsel for the Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Mike Ozekhome, they prayed the court to decline jurisdiction on the suit, since it was labour-related and, as such, the National Industrial Court “is the appropriate court to hear it.” Argument of the counsel for Sanusi, Mr Kola Awodein, that the Federal High Court had jurisdiction was rejected by the court as the judge declined jurisdiction to hear the suit and transferred it to the National Industrial Court. . . http://www.tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/9570-suspension-sanusi-discontinues-suit-against-jonathan |

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted strongly to demands by his former party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, that he retract his recent comments about the party or face legal action. During an interview on a Channels TV programme on Monday, Mr. Fani-Kayode described Boko Haram as the armed wing of the APC, a reason, he claimed, made the party to be sympathetic of the terrorist group. In his response to Lai Mohammed, the APC’s Spokesperson, Tuesday, Mr. Fani-Kayode said that he stands by his allegations and assertions that the APC comprises of “at least a handful of Boko Haram sympathizers and questionable individuals who have at various times expressed a certain degree of support for Boko Haram. May God guide and help them and their party to see the light and to appreciate the virtues and beauty of a decent and peaceful secular state where violence and religious fundamentalism of any sort has no place,” Mr. Fani-Kayode said. “And may He deliver them from continuously and habitually treading the path of division, rancour, lies, deceit, bullying, intimidation and self-destruction before it is too late. Hell will freeze over before I issue Lai Mohammed or the APC any type of apology for what I have said. If they are waiting for that they will wait forever. I look forward to seeing them in court and may God’s will be done,” he added. At the Sunrise Daily programme on Channels TV, Mr. Fani Kayode had alleged that some APC leaders, including Mr. Mohammed and Muhammadu Buhari, had in the past made statements in support of the Boko Haram insurgents. But in the party’s swift reaction on Monday, Mr. Mohammed said that they had never condemned the federal government’s proscribing of Boko Haram, as claimed by the former minister. . . http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/164238-hell-will-freeze-before-i-apologize-to-apc-fani-kayode-says.html |

Lawyer says payment was illegal A lawyer, Frank Tietie, on Monday filed a suit at the National Industrial Court, Abuja against the Minster of Education, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, National Universities Commission, NUC, and the National Salaries and Wages Commission, over the payment of a five-month salary arrears to university lecturers. The Federal Government in December paid members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, salaries owed the lecturers during the period when they were on strike. ASUU had embarked on the strike, that lasted almost six months, on July 1, 2013, over the non-implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with government. In his suit, Mr. Tietie asked the court to give an eight-day notice of summons to the defendants, beginning from January 6. He also demanded the court determine whether members of ASUU were entitled to be paid for the period of time they were on strike and to declare the payment illegal, contrary to law and amounting to a misappropriation of the national commonwealth of the country. Mr. Tietie also asked the court to order that the money be retrieved from the lecturers. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/152869-ASUU-strike-lawyer-sues-lecturers-union-education-minister-salary-earned-strike.html |

The governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, has debunked speculations that he impregnated a daughter of Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka. The governor denied the rumour through his twitter handle on December 18. PREMIUM TIMES became aware of the tweets Saturday morning. There had been rumours that a daughter of the Nobel Laureate was expecting a child for Mr. Amaechi and that she was already living in the Government House. It was further alleged that the governor’s wife, Judith, had fled abroad following the domestic challenges she was having with her husband. It was claimed that the absence of the First Lady gave Mr. Soyinka’s daughter the opportunity to establish her full presence in the Government House. But in the tweet, Mr. Amaechi debunked the rumour, saying it was a big lie, which was part of the ongoing campaign to smear his image. “That rumour about me and Prof. Soyinka’s daughter is a big outrageous lie. It’s certainly part of the ongoing political campaign to smear…..” In another tweet, the governor said his marriage to his wife was intact, adding that they both love themselves. “…..me and Prof. Soyinka. I have never and will never assault my wife Judith. I love her so much and she loves me too. Our marriage DEY KAMPE. (Top Form).” On December 24, the governor tweeted a touching birthday message to his wife Judith. The message was accompanied by a romantic photograph, with the governor wrapping himself around his wife. “Happy birthday to the most beautiful, loving, caring, trustworthy woman alive – my beloved wife and mother of my children, Judith. You’ve been a pillar to me, my partner through thick and thin. I love you so much my darling,” he wrote. He posted the same message to his Facebook page. Photo Credit: Mr. Amaechi’s Faceebook page Mr. Soyinka appears to enjoy warm relationship with Mr. Amaechi. In July, after an open-door lecture series tagged: “WS79 – Memoirs of Our Future: An Audience with Prof. Wole Soyinka,” which held at the African Centre in Covent Garden, London, to commemorate his 79th birthday anniversary, the Nobel Laureate told journalist he was Mr. Amaechi’s friend just as he was to other public officers. Responding to a question on whether he was a friend of the governor, following his spanking of Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan, Mr. Soyinka said, “That Amaechi is my friend is not an allegation.” He said he would be friends with anyone who has been given the mandate of the people through the electoral process. He added that he would not shy away from identifying with public office holders if they were fulfilling their obligations and responsibilities of governance. “To say the Governor of Rivers is my close friend is like saying Kayode Fayemi or Dr. Babangida Aliyu or Governor Ibikunle Amosun or even the Second Republic Governor, Mohammed Shugaba, in Shagari’s administration, is my friend,” Mr. Soyinka said. He, however, pointed out that “it’s not a matter of friendship,” but defence of democracy and truth, noting that he would not be afraid to switch loyalty if the people he once praised change their ways and start oppressing the same people who elected them. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/152192-governor-ameachi-denies-impregnating-soyinkas-daughter.html |
BMW Scandal : Defiant Oduah Says She Will Not Quit - PM News, Lagos Posted: Dec, 24 2013, 3:12PM Nigeria’s embattled aviation minister, Stella Oduah, will not resign and those who claim the House of Representatives had called for her resignation or sack should go back to school, she said on Tuesday in Lagos, southwestern Nigeria. Oduah said federal lawmakers had neither indicted her nor called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack her. Rather, she said, what the House recommended was for the presidency to review some of the things in the aviation sector. The minister, who inspected remodelled facilities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, was asked by a journalist if she would resign following federal lawmakers recommendations to President Jonathan. She replied, ” I think it means you don’t read or you probably don’t understand English because I read it too. What is there is that Mr. President can and should review. That is what they said there. Probably, you should go back to school.” Oduah’s statement left a mammoth of journalists who had thronged the airport bewildered. The Nigerian House of Representatives last week endorsed the report of its Committee on Aviation, which had indicted Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, over the purchase of two BMW cars at the hefty sum of N255 million. The House endorsed the report at a Plenary last Thursday. The report concluded that for approving cars that were not budgeted for in 2013 and for an amount far above the approval limit of the ministry, Oduah had broken the law. It said the minister committed the breach by approving expenditure of over N643 million for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to procure 54 vehicles this year. The House noted that her approval limit as a minister was N100 million. The House asked President Goodluck Jonathan to decide whether he should continue to retain her services as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. A major recommendation of the committee, which was adopted, read, “The House urges the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to review the continued engagement of the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, for having contravened the Appropriation Act, 2013 and the approved, revised threseholds by exceeding the Ministry of Aviation’s approval limit of N100m by the purchase of 54 vehicles valued at N643m.” The endorsement of the report by the House elicited a prompt response from Oduah, who described the action as premeditated and with a hidden agenda. “We are shocked and disappointed that in spite of the deluge of representations and evidences provided by the Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah and all invited stakeholders on the matter, the House would reach conclusions that have only confirmed that there was a hidden Agenda in the entire exercise from the beginning,” said Joe Obi, Odua’s spokesperson. Speaking on the remodelled airport, Oduah assured that the airport would be commissioned before the end of first quarter of 2014. “We want to be able to start the usage of all these facilities by first quarter of next year. What is very key is that passenger travelling experience will be very very different,” Oduah said. She added: “It will be the way it should be; it means you have the comfort, you have the safety and you have the security and most importantly as you’ve seen we’ve increased the capacity which means you have ample space to really do what you are supposed to do.” On the national carrier, she said she encountered a bit of a challenge. “We are trying to rectify that challenge. I think we will do it very soon but the important thing is that we want to give Nigerians a national carrier that we all aspire to have. That that will be a true representation of all of us, that that can be bought from the market. That that will be professionally and efficiently managed,” she said. She didn’t go into details about the challenge, told journalists they don’t need to know about the issue. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/bmw-scandal-defiant-oduah-says-she-will-not-quit-pm-news-lagos |

An interactive session between members of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday resulted in exchange of near uncomplimentary remarks by the two parties in the National Assembly complex. The committee, headed by Abdulmumin Jibrin, which had invited the minister for the session, turned round to walk her out over some differences. The session was to have Okonjo-Iweala alongside the Accountant-General of the Federation, Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla, give a brief on the state of the economy from January to date. But upon her appearance before the committee, Okonjo-Iweala told the lawmakers that although she was “feeling sick,” she had to honour their invitation out of respect. “I must tell you that I’m feeling sick. For the past one week I’ve not had good sleep, so I’m not feeling fine. But I had to come because I respect the parliament and the committee. “I’ll try my best to respond to your questions as much as possible, and my other colleagues who are also here with me will contribute,” she said. However, the minister’s explanation seemed not to appease Jibrin and his committee members who, after consultation among themselves, made Jubrin to rule that the committee could not take on the minister immediately. The prepared document containing the 50 questions that they had for her was then handed over to her and asked to respond in writing within two weeks. “We’re not insensitive to your situation as human beings, and if you had told us this before now, we would have given you some time. We have 50 questions for you, and we can give you time to respond in writing,” Jibrin said. Drama however started when the minister insisted that she should be allowed to respond to the questions, saying “since I’m here now, I want to respond to the questions in person”. But Jibrin simply told her that he had ruled and there was no going back on the matter. “You should provide written answers within two weeks, and we’ll invite you in January to appear before us. The 50 questions capture all at stake on the state of the economy.” However, the minister, who had earlier laid the 2014 budget estimate before the House and briefed journalists thereafter said: “I know you have ruled, but you have to hear me out. You haven’t allowed me to say something, and everybody is here seeing what is happening. “With all due respect, I will not tell your committee that I’m feeling fine when I’m not. We have had good working relationship with your committee; I thought we’ll be treated with courtesy, but the way you’re starting is a bit disturbing,” she said. This situation forced the committee chairman to practically walk Okonjo-Iweala out of the meeting venue, saying, “You know I have ruled and if you don’t mind please excuse us. Members should stay behind for executive meeting. We don’t want any haphazard answers, so you can go honourable minister”. Despite this, the minister demanded that the committee should hear her out, stating: “I will manage to answer the questions. I won’t answer you haphazardly. I know my health, and I assure you that I can answer you well along with my other colleagues here”. This apparently did no go down well with the committee chairman who responded: “I’m sorry Honourable Minister. You can only decide what happens in the Finance Ministry and not in the House”. Okonjo-Iweala who was not happy with the situation further said: “I have uttermost respect for the committee and expect same from you. I’m a Minister of the Federal Republic. When you invite ministers, you should treat them with respect. We can’t be invited and be abused.” . . . SOURCE: http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/12/reps-okonjo-iweala-clash-state-economy/ |
