The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lamented the effect of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities on students and tertiary education in the country.

ASUU on February 14 began the strike due to what it described as “failure” on the part of the government to meet its demands.

The demands include the payment of earned allowances, payment of revitalisation funds to universities, creation of visitation panels and implementation of the University Transparency Accountability Solution instead of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System for the payment of workers in the ivory towers.

The government set up a committee headed by Prof Nimi Briggs to look into the demands of the union and review the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement.

ASUU leaders, who walked out of a meeting with the government on August 16, alleged that no offer was made to them.

The PUNCH reports on August 30, 2023, that ASUU declared a total and indefinite strike. The decision was taken at a meeting of the union’s National Executive Council held on Sunday in Abuja. Reacting to the ongoing strike in a tweet on his Twitter handle on Wednesday, the LP presidential candidate said universities have been closed for six months.

He lamented what he described as a ‘staggering corruption’ level in Nigeria, adding that the country has also been polarised along religious and ethnic lines.

He wrote, “Nigeria is vastly polarized and wracked by deep divisions along religious, ethnic and regional lines. There is a staggering level of corruption. Our universities have remained closed for six months.

“While our healthcare system remains almost moribund, power generation and distribution are also at an all-time low.

“Our position is that ASUU strike has lingered for far too long. It is unconscionable, worrisome and unacceptable that FGN would allow such an industrial action to become almost intractable to the detriment of our students.

“It’s time for FGN to engage in collaborative negotiations with ASUU, and in good faith. -PO”

Dear FG, you should have given up on propaganda by now having seen clearly that it's not working on ASUU.

This government is very insincere and wicked to it's citizen. So the plight of students means nothing to them so long as they are not affected.

How have you kept your promises without paying ASUU people their entitlements. I'm beginning to think that FG had no intention of settling the dispute with ASUU this year. Ngige was only dribbling them, sending them on a wild goose chase.

If I'm ASUU, by next year, I won't shift grounds on any of my demands and they must be fulfilled to the later. Even the said revitalization money should not be reduced by any value. Since FG wants to leverage on the coming Christmas celebrations to see whether ASUU would bend. Very wicked and selfish government that doesn't give a damn about educating her citizens.

That money is too much for a "90% scholarship" and online for that matter.

Pls ignore the agents above and invest in a real public or private University. Don't waste your time and money for online classes

I said it! This govt likes propaganda and our press people are very lazy. I still don't understand why Punch rush to publish a fake news just to be the first to say something about the aftermath of ASUU's meeting with FG. The other lazy media outlets simply copied the nonesense without verification.

ASUU only agreed to call-off the strike after FG complies/implements their demands within the time frame they gave FG.

N 16,000 kickbacks to AGF on any body enrolled on IPPIS. That's billions for the AGF without breaking any sweat.

And one wonders why he would rather die than forgoing ASUU members registering on IPPIS. The corruption in this govt is on the Apex levels.

Failed country

FG is not ready to resolve this strike matter at all. Imagine Ngige saying that revitalization of public University cannot be included in the budget . I'm so disappointed. But rehabilitation of Boko Haram can be included to the tune of over 350 Billion naira?

Dear Nigerian students, you can see that this govt will never take you serious until you rise up and take laws into your hand. The ball is in your court now. Continuous delay is over dangerous.

Not a problem, these ones have already accepted to be in IPPIS so their position now is irrelevant. They should be left in IPPIS and ASUU on UTAS. This lingering strike must be called off by all means.

Things like this makes me think if ASUU's UTAS was designed even in Zimbabwe, Nigerian Govt would not have hesitated to purchase it for billions of naira and subsequently approve for usage without any 'integrity test'.
