TravelRobbed Inside Aero Airline: by inteli(op): 4:55pm On Apr 11, 2013
This happened when I boarded an Aero airline flight 11AJ311U9APR2013 LOSPHC HK1 en route Portharcourt on Tuesday morning (7:00 am, 9th April, 2013). I decided to put my wallet in the handbag (briefcase type) I was carrying because it wouldn't close properly to enter by back pocket. On entering the airplane, I decided to put the handbag in the luggage cabin above the passenger seat that I took. Little did I know that the person pretending as if he was trying to put his load in the remaining space where my bag was was actually ransacking my bag. As unsuspecting as I was, I did not even check to see what he was doing because he was consistently pretending to be carrying his luggage into the cabin.
To cut the long story, I realized later when I was about to pay the airport taxi for his services after we disembarked from the plane that all my money was gone. Even some sealed envelopes the contains letters which were to be delivered to my clients were not spared by the thief as he had torn them completely probably to maximize his loot. This is very sad and disheartening that everyone I narrated the incident have been left with shock and disbelieve that one could be robbed right inside the airplane.
A note of advice, please be vigilant with your hand luggage or any luggage on you when boarding a flight, as these men of the underworld are taking their evil acts to a whole new level. What I'm sure of is that God will surely punish the robber and the day he would be cut, he would be beaten to stupor and burn to death. Amin.
Christianity EtcNigeria Is Dominated By Evil Spirits – Reverend Ighele by inteli(op): 4:17pm On Apr 01, 2013
The General Superintendent of Holy Spirit Misson, Bishop Charles Ighele, has attributed the prevalence of vices in the country to evil spirits.

The cleric, while speaking about the relevance of Good Friday celebration in relation to Nigeria stated that Christians have misinterpreted the religion for mere good works and sober reflection which has caused the essence of it to be lost.

“A day like this is a day for Christians to connect to what happened on the cross. The power of the believer flows from the cross.” He said.

Talking about the many vices prevalent in Nigeria, he stated that “every society is controlled by a dominant spirit,” as well as geographical areas.

He citied San Francisco as the headquarters of homosexuals; Las Vegas as the headquarters of gambling. He added that “Nigeria as it is right now is being controlled by dominant spirits of corruption, of violence… Nigeria is becoming a factory that produces criminals.”

He attributed the surge in crime the country is currently experiencing to the dominant spirits of crime, violence and corruption.

He accused most politicians in governance as being violent men who attain power by killing and hiring thugs in the bid to maintain hold on power.”

He stated that President Goodluck Jonathan, who looks like a non-violent man cannot vouch for those around him who can perpetuate violence without his knowledge.

However, he expressed hope for the nation saying that a man with the right spirit can change a nation.

PoliticsChurch Arrest, Detain Saharareporters’ Publisher, Sowore, Crew, In Nigeria by inteli(op): 12:55pm On Jan 06, 2013
Security and Task Force team at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries,
MFM, harassed, molested and detained illegally a renowned citizen journalist
who attempted to report a New Year’s Eve crossover night service at the
church headquarters along the popular Lagos-Ibadan express road.
Omoyele Mr. Sowore, publisher of Saharareporters, accompanied by Lagos-
based citizen journalist, Segun O’Law another journalist, who report for the site
from Lagos, stopped over at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church to cover
the said crossover night service, but a joint task force of the church made up of
personal church security, armed police and the State Security Service turned
the church into a rights violation ground.
The journalists did a stopover at MFM, as they were hinted that the church has
one of the largest gatherings within the city that night.
The crossover night event is one of numerous church services in which every
church establishment gets its largest congregations in the night preceding the
New Year, seeing the congregants waiting ecstatically with prayers for a new
year of blessing and miracles.
But authorities of the church declined to respond to the allegations. A man who
answered our reporter’s call declined comments, saying we should come
physically to the church’s headquarters in Lagos for any enquiries. He insisted
that the telephone number listed on the church’s website was meant for those
interested in prayer consultation. He also declined to give his name.
“I can’t make any comment,” the official said. “Just come to our office and that
is the only way we can respond to your enquiries.”
Mr. Sowore arrived the church bearing a 5D Canon Camera, with a frame holder
on his shoulder. The accompanying citizen journalist, Mr. O’Law, held a dual
purpose shots and video-taping mini Panasonic Camera.
Upon entering the church’s main gate, which outlooks the busy Lagos end of
the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the crew moved into the auditorium and
identified themselves to the security officers and ushers they encountered every
inch of their way, and telling their mission.
The crew’s mission was to take photos and cover the crossover night service.
Ushers and protocol officers allowed them in and motioned them towards the
altar after scrutinizing their identity cards. But as Mr. Sowore reached the front
of the General Overseer, Pastor D.K. Olukoya, who at that moment was giving
his sermon, he was mobbed by several church Task Force officers guarding the
altar, some of them wearing aprons with inscription ‘Prayer City Army’.
Mr. Sowore was then dragged to the back of the altar by a mob that threatened
at first to smash his camera. The mob later handed him over to the police and
the SSS operatives attached to the church.
Accompanying citizen journalist, Segun O’Law, rushed to the scene to identify
Mr. Mr. Sowore as a journalist and explain the team’s mission to the church.
By this time, a larger crowd had gathered behind the altar minutes as Mr.
Sowore argued that he was only doing his job. The mob was unimpressed.
The argument attracted more church members, one of who ranted that he
would wear down the Jesus in him and transform into Satan to kill Mr. Sowore.
For wearing neck beads designed of cowry shells (which he wears to
showcase his ‘Africanness’), some of the church security operatives described
Mr. Sowore as a ‘sinner’, ‘satan incarnate’, among other vilifying christening.
Moments later, the crew were pushed into a security van and whisked to a
detention post within the church’s expansive premises. The Task Force, who
had demanded Mr. Sowore’s identity card had also seized it, forcefully detained
the crew and invited the Division Police Officer of Ibafo Police station, which
oversees security in the area.
The D.P.O., upon arrival, inspected Mr. Sowore’s local identity card, which he
uses as a special correspondent for one of the numerous Nigerian media he
collaborates with. The D.P.O. confirmed it was genuine after making some calls
through to the media office. The D.P.O. however disappeared after confirming
who Mr. Sowore was, declared he would rather not get involved and advised the
church to allow for amicable settlement to avoid possibly blowing the issue
beyond reasonable proportion.
The church task force however adamantly refused. Instead, they repeatedly
requested to delete the photos and video recordings in the cameras before
releasing the devices and the journalists. The crew remained in the church
detention for four hours.
Within the period of the journalists’ illegal detention, one of the MFM pastors in
the task force emerged with a cane and attempted to flog Mr. Sowore, but he
was cautioned. The pastor and his task force team members had to the sight of
the two journalists, flogged, slapped and humiliated some teenage boys and
girls who were arrested within the church premises for selling bible literatures,
prayer books, printed praises and worship songs and sachet water.
The online advocacy and anti-corruption whistle-blowing website publisher
was shocked when he realized that MFM maintains an illegal detention security
post.
Mr. Sowore said his intention was to maintain a low profile all through, so as to
experience what an ordinary journalist would go through, while fighting against
authoritarian attitude of established local African institutions towards
journalists.
The low profile style of Mr. Mr. Sowore however ended when one of the senior
ministers in the church, who had spotted Mr. Sowore among the crowd behind
the altar before they were whisked away to the detention post, waded in and
enlightened the task force that Mr. Sowore was the publisher of the
international advocacy site, Saharareporters.com.
The mobs, security and task force men quickly opened the website and
googled Mr. Sowore’s name. They were weakened and pleaded that all
footages taken in the church be deleted, but Mr. Sowore turned down their
request.
The church had a crowd of about one million people at the service and series
offerings, including ‘last offering for the year 2012’ and ‘first offering for the year
2013’ among others were obtained from the over one million crowd praying
away their emotions in the night heralding the New Year.
On January 2nd, the crew also stopped by a festival of Masquerades while
travelling through Ondo State to cover a traditional African masquerade dance
in Erekiti. This time also,Mr. Mr. Sowore and his crew introduced themselves
and presented same identity cards they showed the church security. The
masquerades welcomed and warmed up to them. After their coverage, the crew
contrasted between the attitudes of the MFM church and the masquerade
practitioners in the same circumstances of filming an event of public interest.
The MFM church sits on massive hectares of land along the popular Lagos-
Ibadan expressway. It also runs an expensive private university attached to it.
The church’s university, Mountain Top, is unaffordable to most of the offering-
paying members of the MFM church, members say.
Some members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the Living Faith
Church, otherwise known as Winners’ Chapel, also complained they cannot
afford tuitions in the Redeemers’ University for Nations [RUN] and Covenant
University [CU] respectively.
Universities founded by Islamic organisations are also believed to be too
expensive than members can afford.
Before the emergence of the prosperity pentecostal churches, schools created
by early churches were more affordable than most of the public schools, those
who attended those schools said.
But there is now a reverse in the trend with schools owned by religious
organisations now imposing overwhelming tuitions on students, encouraging
state-owned institutions to increase their tuition by up to 200 percent to
compete with expensive faith-based schools.

ypzilanti: I was in Akwa Ibom state some 2 years ago, and i was shocked. If like me, you had visited Uyo in the early 2000s, you will not be able to recognize the town. The place is different and awesome.

If you think the guy is not trying, then visit delta and bayelsa states to confirm that Oil money allocation does not guarantee development. The guy is development oriented...corrupt, but development oriented. All Nigerian governors are corrupt. Corruption is not the problem. The problem is greed and wickedness. Obong Victor Attah ruled the same state, and did zilch with his oil money allocation. He is walking free in Nigeria and no one has prosecuted him for corruption.

Learn to appreciate good works when you see it. The guy turned the state around from zero. Once the power plant is fully operational and the Ibaka port is completed, Akwa Ibom state will be on the path to becoming a huge migration center in Nigeria.

PoliticsAkpabio Forces Ibeno Community To Accept Mobil’s “insulting Relief Material” by inteli(op): 8:43pm On Dec 16, 2012
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom this week summoned the paramount traditional ruler of Ibeno community, Effiong Archianga, and the area’s local government chairman, Henry Nko, and ordered them to reverse the community’s decision to reject relief material provided by ExxonMobil.

SaharaReporters gathered that an infuriated Akpabio, who has acquired significant business interests in Mobil’s oil fields in exchange for ‘protecting’ the oil firm, forced the community to accept and distribute the relief material or face his wrath.

The Ibeno community hosts Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), a subsidiary of ExxonMobil. The community had turned down relief material from the oil firm meant to cushion the effects of the recent oil spill that ravaged the area.

Members of the community were irked by a clause in the firm’s letter accompanying the material. The clause stated that the items did not mean that the oil firm was liable for the spill.

Following Mr. Akpabio’s stern directive, the traditional ruler of Ibeno as well as the area’s council boss immediately complied. They gave directives to their aides to distribute the items to the 26 villages in the Ibeno community.

John Etim, a community leader in the Iwuokpom fishing settlement, said many members of the community were dismayed by the order to accept and distribute items against their wish.

“We returned these things on many grounds, but we learnt that our leaders were forced to accept them by the state government,” said Mr. Etim. He added: “That is our handicap as minorities that provide wealth to the state and country.” The community leader disclosed that his village “received two bags of rice, one quarter bag of rice, six packets of biscuits, 10 pieces of wax cloth, and 48 tins of milk.” He asked, “Given the size of this community where do you start from?”

ExxonMobil provided the relief items following an oil spill on November 9 that devastated the community. One source told SaharaReporters that several thousand barrels of crude oil were discharged into the Atlantic, but that the extent of the spill was grossly under-reported to Nigeria’s oil industry regulators who depend on the operators for data.

The oil firm’s cover-up caused a stir at the National Assembly when an ExxonMobil executive, Mark Ward, appeared last week before the House of Representatives committee on the environment. An embattled Mr. Ward was confronted with testimonies from the host communities contradicting his report of minimal spillage. He had to apologize on live television for the firm’s shortcomings in handling the spill and misinforming the legislature.

Sam Ayadi, chairman of the Akwa Ibom chapter of the Artisan Fishermen Association, told SaharaReporters that the fishermen had nothing to do with the so-called relief material.

“The so-called relief materials sent to the communities had no room to accommodate non-indigenes of the communities who were also affected by the spill. We have indigenes and non-indigenes of Ibeno in our midst. So what happens to non-indigenes when the materials were to be shared amongst the villages?

“Moreover the materials they sent did not include fishing implements and accessories to offer relief for our losses not to talk of the deprivation we have suffered for the past one month since the spill occurred,” said Mr. Ayadi.

Several traditional rulers in the area had mandated the paramount ruler to call Paul Arinze, ExxonMobil’s General Manager in charge of Public and Government Affairs, and express the community’s reservations about the firm’s so-called relief offer. Several of those traditional rulers told SaharaReporters that they were dismayed about the state governor’s pressure on them to accept the firm’s insulting and inadequate provisions.

One angry village leader said that the governor’s use of crude threat and intimidation on the community “has pushed us to the wall.”

“It has become abundantly clear that Akwa Ibom government led by Akpabio has taken sides with the oil company against the oil-bearing communities. Otherwise what is the point of using force and threat to force us to accept a so-called gift?” he said.

“The conspiracy between the government and the management of Mobil against us will not stand and we shall one day take our destinies in our hands. With God on our side, it shall not be long from now,” said the village head. He added: “If they are claiming that they are not liable for the spill, why then are they doing this?”
