A Nigerian born scientist, Samuel Achilefu, has won the prestigious St. Louis Award for 2014 for creating cancer-visualizing glasses. Dr. Achilefu, a professor of radiology and biomedical engineering, and his team developed the imaging technology in cancer diagnosis into a wearable night vision-like goggles so surgeons could see the cancer cells while operating. “They basically have to operate in the dark,” Bloomberg Businessweek quoted Dr. Achilefu, 52, as saying. “I thought, what if we create something that let’s you see things that aren’t available to the ordinary human eye.” Dr. Achilefu won a scholarship from the French government to study at the University of Nancy, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a regional newspaper in St. Louis, U.S., and is the 87th person to receive the annual award since it was established in 1931. Married with two young children, Dr. Achilefu moved to St. Louis after he was hired by Mallinckrodt to start a new research department. “Our efforts start with two words: ‘What if?'” Dr. Achilefu said during his acceptance speech. “These words may sound simple, but they embody the belief that each person has the potential to make a difference, if only he or she can take the time to understand the problem.” According to Bloomberg, the researchers’ technology requires two steps: First, surgeons inject a tiny quantity of an infrared fluorescent marker into the patient’s bloodstream. The peptides contained in the marker enables it to locate cancer cells and buries itself inside. After the tracer flows through a patient’s body and clears from non-cancerous tissue – which lasts about four hours – the operation would begin. Wearing the goggle, the doctor can inspect tumours under an infra red light that reacts with the dye, causing cancer cells to glow from within. . . http://www.premiumtimesng.com/features-and-interviews/185477-nigerian-born-scientist-wins-award-for-his-cancer-seeing-glasses.html

A civic group has launched an online application to track the delivery of pre-election promises made by Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari. The web-app [http://www.buharimeter.ng/], announced on Monday, holds data on all promises made by both the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and Mr. Buhari while campaigning for the 2015 general elections. It is part of the digital governance revolution in Nigeria, helping the use of online tools to deepen the country’s democracy and make government accountable and transparent, its creators said. The app was built by the Centre for Democracy and Development with support from Open Society Foundation West Africa and a leading budget data analytics, Budgit. Buharimeter measures the implementation of Mr. Buhari’s campaign promises and displays a visual report. It documents promises made by the current government in different sectors for easy tracking. The performance of the government will be measured using three related methods. First, it will crowdsource Nigerians’ contributions to discussions, comments on policy pronouncements of the government in achieving its set targets and surveys. . . http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/184380-nigerian-civil-society-launch-buharimeter-to-track-buharis-campaign-vows-delivery.html |
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday dismissed the suit filed by some disaffected subscribers challenging the recent 20 per cent increase in subscription rates of MultiChoice’s DStv platform. The subscribers, Osasuyi Adebayo and Oluyinka Oyeniji, both lawyers, had filed the class action suit on behalf of themselves and other DStv subscribers in the country. The plaintiffs had sought an order of the court restraining MultiChoice from effecting the new rates, which began on April 1, 2015. But in his ruling, Justice Chukwujeku Aneke upheld the preliminary objection filed by MultiChoice and described the suit an abuse of court process. The judge rejected the plaintiff’s argument that MultiChoice did not deserve to be given right of audience, having failed to abide by an earlier ex parte order of the court restraining the company from implementing the rates. Justice Aneke said the court was bound to entertain arguments from all parties before it, notwithstanding the alleged violation of the court order. The court also ruled that the suit disclosed no reasonable cause of action, given that the plaintiffs were not obliged to remain MultiChoice subscribers on account of the hike in subscription rates. Justice Aneke also upheld MultiChoice’s argument that the suit failed to comply with mandatory provisions of Sections 97 and 98 of the Sherrifs and Civil Processes Act, which stipulate that a writ to be served outside jurisdiction must be concurrently issued. . . http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/183818-court-dismisses-suit-against-dstv-price-increase.html |

A former Central Bank Governor, Charles Soludo, has reacted to the criticism of his earlier article by the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. In a lengthy, over 6000 words article, Mr. Soludo on Sunday rejected claims by Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala that he performed poorly as governor of the Central Bank. He said his performance as CBN governor was unprecedented locally as well as globally acknowledged. “In Nigeria’s history, no governor of the Central Bank has delivered 24 consecutive months of single digit inflation as I did until the advent of the unprecedented global crisis in 2008,” he said. Mr. Soludo then challenged claims by Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, who is also the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, that the Nigerian economy is doing well. He accused Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala of running the country’s economy aground. “You are brilliant Madam, but you need serious help,” he said while reeling our data to show the porous state of the Nigerian economy. “Having spent all your life in the World Bank bureaucracy largely in administration/operations, no one will blame you if your economics has become a bit rusty. There are firebrand Nigerians all over the world to draft to service. It is certainly embarrassing to Nigeria for you to be bothering World Bank economists to help you with most basic economic analysis.” . . http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/176097-soludo-replies-okonjo-iweala-accuses-her-of-forging-national-economics-statistics.html |

Two persons were feared dead and 20 others injured in a stampede at the entrance of Akwa Ibom International Stadium on Friday during its inauguration. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that crowd control was a difficult task in spite of the road blocks mounted some kilometres away from the stadium. Although the spectators got tickets to enable them access the 30, 000 capacity stadium, the crowd started thronging the stadium about five hours ahead of the scheduled time for the match. Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emem Bassey, told NAN that two unconscious persons were taken to an undisclosed hospital. “I was told that two persons have been taken to the hospital; these are perhaps people who were fighting at the gate in their bid to enter the stadium,” Dr. Bassey said. He said that the third unconscious person, a woman, was revived in the stadium and had started talking. “It should be expected; this is the first time this is happening, everybody is excited, everybody wants to enter the stadium. “We have 150 medical personnel in this place and eight ambulances. All our medical teams are up and doing and all the clinics are manned,” Mr. Bassey said. NAN reports that the security operatives at some check points were using horse whips and teargas to control the crowd. Contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Achong, however said, “there was no stampede, there was only crowd control. We are only controlling the crowd entering the stadium.” When told that journalists at the stadium reported a stampede, he said, “I’m not aware” and terminated the call. An international friendly between the home-based senior national team of Nigeria, Super Eagles B, and the U-23 National Team of Ghana, the Black Meteors, was fixed to mark the opening of the stadium. “It is possible football fans were scrambling to enter the stadium to watch the match. That’s what I heard,” an Uyo resident, who said he was on his way to the facility, said. The President of Ghana, John Mahama and the Ivorian Head of State, Alassane Ouattara were all expected in Uyo to open the new edifice. Apart from Presidents Jonathan, Mahama and Ouattara, a number of governors from across Nigeria are expected, while the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Melvin Pinnick and some Executive Committee members and Management staff arrived Uyo on Thursday evening. The 30,000 – capacity venue, with a bullet –proof State Box that has 70 seats, has been described by the Vice President of Ghana Football Association, Fred Crentsil (who was sent by CAF to inspect the venue) as being “among the best you can find anywhere in the world”. Governor Godswill Akpabio, who is the chief host, is showcasing the majestic facility, which has already been approved by the Confederation of African Football for the crucial 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa on November 19, as one of the key infrastructure he has delivered for the oil-rich State. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/sports/170755-updated-2-feared-dead-20-injured-in-stampede-at-akwa-ibom-new-stadium.html
