TOPIC: The Enemies You Almost Forgot (1)

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Maonites …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

After dealing with the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, the Sidonians, and the Amalekites, the children of Israel also had to deal with the Maonites. The Maonites (Judges 10) were identified likely as the Meunites or an Arabian people (possibly related to Midianites) from the southern wilderness, representing regional, predatory threats.

The Maonites are the enemies you almost forgot. They were not the most famous of Israel's enemies. They did not have the grandeur of Egypt with its chariots and its Pharaohs, nor the organized military menace of the Philistines with their iron weapons and their Goliaths.

The Maonites did not build empires. They did not leave behind monuments. They were almost a footnote as far as biblical history is concerned, and it is easy to skim past them on the way to more dramatic stories. And yet God remembered them.

When Israel cried out in Judges 10, rehearsing their misery before the Lord, God did not respond with sympathy but with a history lesson. "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand."

Notice that God names seven nations. The Maonites made God's list. That is worth pausing on, as the Maonites represent a particular kind of enemy. They are not the dramatic, headline-grabbing oppressor, but the regional, predatory, wilderness threat. They were likely the Meunites, a semi-nomadic Arabian people who raided when you were not looking, stripped what little you had, and disappeared back into the dust.

They were not trying to build a civilization on your bones but were simply opportunistic. They came when you were already weakened, struck when the harvest was ripe, and left you poorer than they found you. In other words, they were the kind of enemy that does not announce itself.

Father, help me to be always sensitive to the subtle, opportunistic enemies that seeks to attack when I'm weak. I ask for your protection and deliverance always, in Jesus Name.

TOPIC: The Power of Collective Strength

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Amalekites …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

In Judges 10, we could see how God reminded His people of deliverance from the Amalekites. In our previous studies, we have discovered how the Amalekites were such a huge nuisance to God's people. Nevertheless, to get them defeated perpetually, God's people have to partner with the LORD by playing certain roles to make this a possibility.

One of the most effective ways to defeat enemies bent on getting you wearied is discovered in the power of collective strength. Remember that when Israel fought Amalek in Exodus 17, Moses couldn’t hold his hands up alone. When he grew tired, others stepped in to support him.

It doesn't matter how strong you think you are, you must realise that no one sustains victory alone, even today. Whether it’s therapy, mentorship, community, or accountability partners, lasting breakthroughs are rarely solo efforts. It is ignorance and pride to think you can sort everything out yourself at all times, and such mindset have led so many into their ruin.

When Jesus was discussing with His disciples about His imminent arrest, Peter boldy told Him he is a strong guy with no fear. Note the words of Jesus:

"“Peter, my dear friend, listen to what I’m about to tell you. Satan has obtained permission to come and sift you all like wheat and test your faith. But I have prayed for you, Peter, that you would stay faithful to me no matter what comes. Remember this: after you have turned back to me and have been restored, make it your life mission to strengthen the faith of your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32 TPT

The power of collective strength offers to us a unique form of energy and vitality needed to remain perpetually invincible and conquerors.

Father, help me recognize the power of collective strength. I ask for humility to accept support and wisdom to know when to ask for help. May I be a source of strength to others, just as others are to me. Amen.

TOPIC: Problems That Don’t Stay Gone. The Modern Amalekites (3)

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Amalekites …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

Today, a lot of people, even many believers, are venting in frustration: “I thought I dealt with this already, why is this coming back again?” “Why does progress feel temporary?” The answer is that some battles are not one-time events, but they require ongoing awareness.

As believers, Jesus already gave us permanently victory over all expressions of the enemy's attacks. However, we must also be proactive in continually claiming the victory, and awareness (to make the necessary adjustments at different seasons) are part of our responsibilities.

Israel learned something difficult, which is the fact that survival wasn’t just about winning big battles but about staying alert between them. The danger was always at the rear.

This means as believers today, you must be proactive in guarding your weak moments, not just your strong ones. You must be proactive in building support systems (like Moses needed Aaron and Hur). You must be proactive in recognizing patterns, not just incidents. You must stay disciplined even after success.

It doesn't matter how strong a believer or spiritual you are, we have been warned that there's usually an "evil moment" characterized by weakness and vulnerability to do what is wrong or susceptible to fall into the enemy's trap. Wisdom demands that you should always invest prayers ahead into these moments of weakness that usually comes unprepared, so you won't be part of those swallowed up.

Finally, King Saul’s story shows us that incomplete solutions create future crises. While he won the battle, he didn’t finish the job. Today, that looks like addressing symptoms but not root causes. It is making temporary changes instead of lasting transformation, and ignoring small compromises that grow into major problems.

Dear reader, never forget that what you leave unfinished today can resurface tomorrow, stronger and more dangerous.

Father, I receive the strength to resist the raiders that come to steal my peace and purpose. I declare that I will not be caught off guard by the enemy's attacks. I renounce fear and anxiety, and I choose to stand firm in Your power.

Episode 6

Raymond seem to notice her discomfort…

“Guys, make una reduce your strong face nah, she no dey comfortable. (Guys, try to reduce your hard expression, she’s not comfortable.)” He told them.

She smiled in appreciation. Some of the guys tried to smile, and it made them less frightening.

“I am sorry for the inconveniences, they have to be here because they were all present the day your brother came here to preach to me. We were all having fun outside when he came, they chased him but he refused to go, neither did he keep quiet. Some minutes after, some of my boys started dropping their cigarette, others dropping their bottle of alcohol. Meanwhile, it was me he was talking to, I battled with conflict feelings, until he said the judgment of God is coming upon me if I refuse to repent from my evil ways. I took that to mean he was cursing me and I got angry. That was when I stabbed him.”

Sandra was now sobbing softly.

“The reason why I said I know you didn’t come to arrest or fight is because I know it’s not possible. No police will come with you once they hear my name, at least not in this State. The best they can do is to arrest one of my boys instead and release him in a day or two. But an higher authority has already arrested us, which is God.”

“I am not an ordinary thug as you may think. Apart from being the head of all the thugs in this local government, I am also the second-in-command to the head of thugs in the whole State. Unknown to people, we are responsible for the kidnappings that has been going on in this local government, and in the State at large.”

“We kidnap and sell children to ritualists or pedophiles as the case may be. The day your brother came here, I already had up to twelve kidnapped children to be sold. But after I stabbed your brother out of anger, and he died, my conscience that has been dead for years came back alive and started haunting me. The next day, I was to deliver six out of the twelve children to my boss, who will in turn sell them to his clients. But for the first time in many years, I felt guilty, and I released the children instead. All twelve of them were released to go home. I used my influence as the second-in-command to order all other thugs across the state who kidnap children to release every kidnapped children in their custody. I threatened to confess to the media and mention their names if they disobey my order.”

“Your brother only preached to me, but by doing that, he saved many destinies…”

Sandra could not hold it anymore, her emotions betrayed her and her tears flowed right in front of the thugs.

It all made sense now. Why she had to be the one to convert this man. It wasn’t for his sake, anyone could do that, because the Holy Spirit has worked on his heart. It was because of her, for her to see clearly how much time and destinies she has been wasting by not taking the business of evangelism serious.

“Oh God, have mercy!” she muttered
“I am unworthy to stand before you, I just realized how selfish I’ve been… Please forgive me. I promise to do better Lord Jesus, I promise to do better by your grace…”

She wept more, until she felt the heaviness in her heart being lifted. She wiped her tears with handkerchief, facing the men in the room.

“Gentlemen…” She addressed
“Like I said earlier, I’m not here to hold you for the death of my brother, in fact, you were able to do that because it was the will of God. If not, it won’t take God a second to send legion of Angels to protect His righteous one. I am rather here to finish what my brother started.”

She cleared her throat.

“The salvation of Christ is sure to anyone that will accept it, but if you think you don’t need it, no one is forcing you. I should also let you know that this decision must be genuine, and you will certainly not regret it.”

She brought out her Bible and opened several verses that speaks about the judgement of God upon sinners, the desire of God for sinners to come to repentance, and the love and sacrifices of Jesus Christ.

Forty minutes later, they were all on their knees, professing their new life in Christ.

Episode 5

“Nah how you take know Razor real name? Who you be? (How do you know Razor’s real name? Who are you?)” The other one asked. She realized Razor is his nickname.

“I’m Stephen’s sister…”

“Who be Stephen? (Who is Stephen?)” He asked, obviously getting impatient.

They don’t even know the name of the person they killed? She finally changed her mind, she’s doing this no more. But it was too late…

A man came in, with more thugs. He seems to be their leader, because everyone started hailing him, even though he doesn’t look like he is enjoying it, he rather rebuked them for smoking early in the morning.

“Razor Baba, this omoge dey find you, she sabi your real name sef, but wetin she call herself no make sense (Razor, this Lady is asking of you, she even knows your real name, but who she called herself doesn’t make sense).” The first guy that spoke to her said amidst the hailings.

“Who are you?” The man asked, giving her a cold stare.

“I’m Stephen’s sister.” She repeated.

“And who is Stephen?”

“The guy you… you stabbed about two weeks ago.” She swallowed, trying hard to conceal her emotions.

His stare was no longer cold, but he was surprised. She spoke up to clear whatever he was assuming.

“I’m not here to arrest or fight you”

“I know. I’m just wondering how you know my name and how you find me.”

What did he mean by he knew she didn’t come to arrest or fight him?

“Jesus told me your name, and I asked about you from people who witnessed the incident.” She knew he wouldn’t understand the first part. But who cares? The earlier he chased her away from his sight, the better for the both of them. But to her utmost surprise, he invited her in...

“Please seat.” He told her when they got to his room, accompanied by the other two guys. She couldn’t believe a room as beautiful as this could be inside the disgusting building she entered.

He excused himself and made a phone call, telling the receiver to come to his room instantly. Sandra thought it was just a person, but more than ten people trooped in a minute later. She did a headcount, they were fourteen in number. Their expression not different from the first two guys’.

Episode 4

“I’m sorry Lord, I don’t think I can do it. Please send someone else, and give me another assignment.” She pleaded.

“No, I don’t want any other person, but you!”…

“Pleeaaasse… ”

Her eyes opened, and she found herself in her room again. It was a dream. She had dozed off while crying.

** ** **

A few days has passed and she was gradually getting over the death of Stephen. But there was still something she is yet to do, which she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She has been ignoring the voice of her spirit, but it grew louder everyday.

She went out to preach a couple of times. Thinking that will make God reconsider, but it was all fruitless.

She eventually decided to give it a try, as she was losing her peace.

She got the location of the incident after asking around. She almost changed her mind when she got there, it was a barrack, not of Soldiers but of Thugs. How on earth did Stephen get here? No sane person will enter this place in the name of evangelism.

She entered through the small wooden gate. The first sight that embraced her was nothing short of disgust. Everywhere littered with empty packs of cigarette, used condoms, dirty water that probably flowed from a nearby gutter or bathroom. The atmosphere itself has been polluted with the mixture of both alcohol and marijuana. Jesus!

She thought of running out, and she wanted to do just that, but she wasn’t in control of her legs anymore, as she finds herself walking towards two smoking guys in the building.

“Good afternoon Sirs…” She greeted. Their expression so hard, it could compete with a rock.

“Ehn ehn… Omoge, nah wetin you dey find for here? You miss road? (Lady, what are you looking for here? Did you miss your way?” One of them asked. She wished that was the case, she would have turned back the moment she stepped her feet inside.

“No Sir, I’m here to see one Mr Raymond.” Almost immediately, the two of them looked at her like she just mentioned a name she ought not to mention.

Episode 3

It suddenly seemed like a healing balm was poured over her head, flowing downward.

In a switch of the moment, she saw herself in a field. She saw a shining light ahead, tried to look closely but could not, for the light is too bright to behold.

“Beloved” A soothing voice called from the direction of the shining light, at the same time, she could hear it from the deepest part of her spirit.

“Savior! Is that you?” She cried.

“YES, I AM”

She bowed down in full excitement. Jesus is here, right before her.

“Stephen fought the good fight of faith, and he won...”

“You are angry because you thought he died while preaching my name. But Stephen didn’t die because he was preaching, on the contrary, he went out to preach because he knew he would die.”

“How is that possible?” She thought, still on her bowing position.

“It is possible because Stephen understood that he was no longer living for himself. When I told him it is time to take him home, he didn’t refuse. Instead he requested for a little extension of time. He said the number of souls that has been won on his account is not enough. I told not to bother, that he has done well, and Father is pleased with him. But he insisted, he said he won’t mind even if it is just one soul, one more soul on his account.”

Sandra looked with wonder. Stephen wasn’t just an evangelist, he was a passionate one. She tried doing a mental calculation, of how many people got converted through her brother, just the ones she knew of. She had to stop counting, because she couldn’t stop remembering names. The total sum she stopped at, if divided by ten, one part is still more than the people she herself has converted since she started her Christianity journey. Yet Stephen still said they were not enough?

She tried imagining if God says it is time for her to die as well, won’t she be too ashamed to face HIM? In fact, can her work pass through the test of fire and survive? Uncertainly! Even the few people that got converted through her, she never followed up on them after their conversion, unlike Stephen does. Who knows if all, not some of them wouldn’t have gone back to their old ways.

She suddenly felt too ashamed to be in the presence of the Savior.

“I can hear your thoughts Beloved. But be of good cheer… it is not too late to correct your wrong doings. I have an assignment for you.”

Her face lit up at the mention of another chance.

“Thank you Jesus, thank you. I promise to do it faithfully.”

“Raymond is the name of the person that stabbed Stephen. The Holy Spirit have started working on him through his conscience, I want you to lead him to salvation.”

“ What! You want me to preach to the murderer of my brother?” She wished she heard wrong, how can she do that? She has not gotten over his death, and she would be the one to convert his murderer?

Episode 2

“Father…” She called out. “Stephen is dead”

Different thoughts ran through her mind, but there was a particular one that kept coming no matter how she tried to bury it. God is wicked, He killed your brother, just like He killed your Parents. She knows better than to believe that. She had held unto that belief when her parents died. But she would not take that route again, it won’t yield anything good, except bitterness.

God is not wicked, He just does things the way He wills.

“I know you are not wicked, I just want to know why Stephen had to die…”

“He knew you, he obeyed every of your word. Stephen will never do anything outside your will. So why did he have to die suddenly?”

“Worship Me!” She heard.

That voice? It was the same voice that told her Stephen would die. The voice with so much authority. Is God asking her to worship Him? Even in this situation, after He allowed Stephen to die?

“Thank you Lord…” She shivered at the sound of her own voice, it was cold.

Certainly, that is not the kind of worship God desire. What is she supposed to do? Her sorrow is great.

She remembered the story of Job. That man can’t be human, how can he lose everything in a day, yet still went ahead and worshipped God?

She went on her knees.

“Help me Lord, my faith is not as great as Job’s. I’m filled with so much grief and my heart is tearing apart… Please help me.”

She didn’t realize she had been crying until she felt the stream of tears on her face. A song broke out of her mouth, and she sang it with great anguish…

She has heard the song being sang numerous times, with joy and happiness, she herself had sang it the same way. She never imagined she would one day sing it with stream of tears.

She sang continuously as her tears were uncontrollable. Pain won’t be qualified enough to describe her feeling.

UNQUESTIONABLE GOD (by Oluwapelumi Kelani)

Episode 1

“Stephen will die!” She heard that phrase two nights ago, instantly casting away the voice that spoke within her. Fully convinced it was the devil, she immediately started praying against the spirit of death over her brother. She even decided to start a three-days marathon fasting, with prayer. To her, that was the right way to engage this battle the devil has declared. A battle she was sure she would win, as long as she has the backing of the One who is far greater than the devil himself.

Again, while she was on her way to work that morning, she heard it, more audibly this time. “Stephen will die!”

She decided to intensify her prayers, or probably extend the fasting to seven days.

Her phone rang few hours before her closing hour. A smile crossed her lips as the screen revealed Stephen’s name. she expected the usual “Hello Sandra, what would you like me to prepare for dinner?”...

However, it was a stranger’s voice she heard when she answered the call. And a terrible news was broken; Stephen is dead!!...

She watched as Stephen was being laid to rest. Her only brother. It was their parents at first, and now him.

Surprisingly, she had realized later, that the voice she heard was not of the devil. It was in fact, the voice of God. God was telling her, or better still, declaring to her that her brother would die, and it happened. How could she not know? But even if she knew, would it have changed anything? It doesn’t seem like God was seeking her permission. He was simply saying what He will do. Isn’t God known for doing what He says?... But why? Why did He do this to her? To Stephen.

“Stephen will die!” Thinking about it now, the word came with so much authority. How did she miss that?

People stared at her with concern. Yes, she had not shed a tear since three days ago that he died, neither did she talk to anyone. All she did was sigh every now and then. She has nothing to say anyway, except questions, which of course none of them have answers to.

“We are here today because of our brother and friend. I know our heart ache over this situation, because nobody wants this to happen. But I want us to trust in God, by leaning and relying on Him even when things seem unclear. Just like it is written to the Thessalonians, we shouldn’t grieve like others who have no hope. We should rather prepare ourselves for the day we will also close our eyes in death…”

The Pastor preached on, the same Pastor that preached two years ago when her parents were being buried. She cried then, because she hated God. Her parents were good people, why should they die untimely? Stephen later made her realize that being good is not enough. Their Parents rejected the salvation of Christ, exposing them to the enemy’s attack.

But Stephen was not like that. He was full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. It was said that he was stabbed to death while evangelizing. God could have saved him, He could have sent His Angels to protect him from being killed. Didn’t He promise long life in the Bible?

“Sandra, let’s go home.” Mary, her friend and colleague said.

She stared at Stephen’s grave for the last time before turning away. Mary made an attempt to cook for her when they got home, which she declined. She requested to be left alone instead.

“No, I can’t leave you.” Mary objected.
“The fact that you are not crying or talking does not mean you are fine. In fact, I’m worried you might hurt yourself.”

“Don’t worry about me, I will be fine. I just want to be alone… Please”

“Are you sure?” Mary asked with concern. She nodded her head in response, forcing a smile. She hugged her and left.

She finally got to be alone. She walked into her room, locking the door firmly.

A Note To Readers

Oluwapelumi Daniella Kelani was born into a mixed-faith family in the Oko-Oba area of Agege in Lagos State on March 19th, 2000. Her mum is a Christian, and her Muslim dad died when she was just 4. She was the first child, and with two younger brothers, they grew up watching their hardworking mother hustling relentlessly to give them a good life.

We met as students at the University of Ibadan, and in spite of being a year ahead of her in school, we became best of friends by divine orchestration. As members of the same Campus Fellowship, when I was appointed as the Fellowship President, I experienced how she wisely maintained our friendship without becoming too familiar with my spiritual leadership.


When I was observing my one-year NYSC duties at Lokoja in Kogi State, she just wrapped up her studies at Unibadan and was both preparing to be mobilised for NYSC and to celebrate her convocation ceremony.

On Sunday, 10th November, 2024, she was travelling from Lagos to Ibadan in preparation for the convocation ceremony taking place that week, when the bus she was in had a fatal accident that claimed her life and that of her co-travellers.

Of course, it was a devastating experience for every one of us.

Fortunately, some years before her demise, she wrote some stories and shared them with me for review and proofreading. One of them is titled "Unquestionable God". We turned everything into a book as part of her legacies.


When I returned to Lagos after the completion of my NYSC duties, I searched for her family address and ensured I became acquainted with them.

Her mum still struggled to move past the incident, and she was always eager to talk a lot with me about her late daughter.

She told me how Pelumi, in spite of her financial difficulties, usually visit orphanages on her birthdays to share gifts with the kids. She told me how Pelumi planned to have her own school so she could impact younger generations.

She admitted that in spite of being the mother, her daughter was much ahead of her in spirituality and spiritual disciplines. She fondly recollected how that whenever her daughter is at home, she is always indoors, fasting, praying, studying, listening to sermons, etc.

She also admitted that it was after the death of her daughter that she had a glimpse of how impactful she lived. A lot of children in her home church so much loved her, endearing her to their parents.


There were so many things Pelumi's mother told me that brought me close to tears. Of course, I must admit that many of the things she was telling me were things I already knew about her (and even much more). This is so because Pelumi was always sharing everything about herself and her family with me, and I'm always grateful to be part of her life.

TOPIC: Problems That Don’t Stay Gone. The Modern Amalekites (1)

*Message*

Today, the “Amalekites” don’t always look like armies, but show up as patterns, systems, habits, and pressures that keep coming back (especially when you think you have finally moved on). Remember that the Amalekites in biblical record were not like Egypt that was a structured empire you could identify, confront, and leave behind.

The Amalekites were something more frustrating, unpredictable, persistent, and opportunistic. They didn’t build cities or establish systems, and didn’t stay in one place long enough to be defeated once and for all. They just kept coming back.

That is exactly how many modern struggles operate. “Amalekites” are the recurring battles that show up at your weakest moments. The addiction you thought you beat but returns during stress. They are the toxic cycle in relationships that repeats itself. They are the financial instability that reappears just when things improve

The anxiety or burnout that hits after a major win, or the systemic challenges that keep communities stuck despite progress, are all examples of modern Amalekites. They don’t attack when you are strong and prepared. Rather, they wait. Just like in Deuteronomy 25, they attacked the rear, consisting of the tired, the slow, and the vulnerable.

Today, that “rear” might be your mental health after a long season of pressure, your discipline when you are exhausted, your faith when prayers seem unanswered, and your values when opportunities tempt compromise.

TOPIC: Dealing With The Raiders (5)

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Amalekites …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

There was nothing good about these enemies known as the Amalekites. They were simply a constant pain to the Israelites. Centuries later, in the book of Esther, we see a villain known as Haman identified as an Agagite who almost destroyed the entire Jewish people in Persia.

We see Haman as a descendant of the very royal line Saul had failed to extinguish. When God instructed Saul to completely extinguish all the Amalekites when he had the chance, He apparently sees into the future. The incomplete obedience at Amalek became the near-extermination of the Jewish people in Persia centuries later.

We don't know what Haman had learnt from history about the Israelites. But in the book of Esther, he had risen to an Influential spot in government, and the same spirit that influenced his people in the ancient world to attack God's people, still prompted him to replicate same. Except for divine intervention, Haman could have successfully destroyed God's people.

The God who delivered Israel from the Amalekites in the ancient world still delivered His people from Haman the Amalekite in Persia.

What the Amalekites represent is the particular exhaustion of contending with an enemy that will not stay defeated. They are the problem that recurs.

Every generation of Israelites who thought themselves free of them discovered, in some moment of vulnerability, that the desert still held them. They were the enemy that taught Israel a harder lesson than any empire could, the fact that survival requires not only courage in the moment of crisis, but vigilance in every quiet interval between crises.

They learnt that the rear of the column (which consists of the slow, the tired, and the struggling) is always exposed, and someone, somewhere, is always watching it.

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Amalekites …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

The Amalekites are raiders who are friends with the desert. Remember that the desert was vast and trackless, always ready to swallow them and spit them out somewhere else. They were just unpredictable.

Defeating them in one place simply displaced them to another. They were, in the truest sense, a stateless threat, a people whose power resided not in territory but in mobility.

Let's move to the book of First Samuel, talking about King Saul's catastrophic encounter with them. The Prophet Samuel had given him explicit instructions to destroy them utterly and spare nothing. While Saul won the battle, he couldn't bring himself to complete the mandate.

He spares Agag, the Amalekite king (perhaps out of some ancient warrior's code that regarded a royal captive as a trophy) as well as the best sheep and cattle (rationalizing that they could be used for sacrifice). Saul's partial obedience is treated as complete disobedience.

Samuel furiously killed Agag himself with furious declaration: "As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women."

Unfortunately, the kingdom was torn from Saul's line that day. The Amalekites cost Saul not just a battle but his dynasty.

*Message*

In Judges 6, when Midian oppresses Israel and the Amalekites ride with them, the effects were so terrible. We could see that they come up like locusts in numbers too great to count, with their camels and their tents.

We were told that they swept across the land from one end to the other, stripping it bare. They devour crops before they can be harvested and slaughtered livestock. These terrible raiders left no sustenance behind, and the Israelites had to retreat into caves and mountain clefts, hiding their food in pits and threshing wheat in winepresses to conceal it.

When we were introduced to the man Gideon, we found him beating grain in secret in a winepress when the angel appeared to him. The Amalekites had reduced a people to hiding in holes in the ground! However, God proved a point by using just 300 men with Gideon to attack the combined host of Midian and Amalek. The LORD sent confusion into the enemy's camp, and the men started killing each other in the confusion.

The enemy that had terrorized Israel with sudden disorienting violence is undone by sudden disorienting violence turned back on them.

However, even after that experience, the Amalekites did not break. They never seemed to break permanently. This is the quality that distinguishes them most sharply from the other enemies Israel faced. The Philistines, at least, had cities you could burn and infrastructure you could dismantle.

Even the Ammonites had a capital, Rabbah, whose fall meant something distasteful. But as for the Amalekites, they only had the desert. The desert was vast and trackless, always ready to swallow them and spit them out somewhere else. They were just unpredictable.

*Message*

The Bible, in Deuteronomy 25, described a dangerous method employed by the Amalekites that made them uniquely terrible. These raiders usually attacked the rear of the Israelite column, consisting of the stragglers, the exhausted, the elderly, and the children who had fallen behind.

The Amalekites did not come at the fighting men in the vanguard but instead preyed on weakness the way a wolf pack cuts a sick animal from the herd.

Remember that in those days, the rear of a migrating people was where the most vulnerable traveled. The most vulnerable are those who could not keep pace, those whose sandals had given out, those carrying infants, or supporting aged parents.

The Amalekites found them there and struck without mercy. This is why Deuteronomy is unusually emphatic in its condemnation that these raiders feared not God. In the ancient world, this phrase carried enormous weight. At least, there are certain other enemies that feared God (even a deity not your own) and observed some bits of moral constraint that acknowledged that the helpless deserved some protection. The Amalekites observed no such constraint.

By the time of the Judges, they had become a symbol of affliction and misery in Israel. They don't come as an invading army that comes to conquer and then governs, but as raiders who come to consume and vanish.

TOPIC: Dealing With The Raiders (1)

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Amalekites …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

After dealing with the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and the Sidonians, the children of Israel also had to deal with the Amalekites. The Amalekites (Exodus 17, Judges 3, 6) represented persistent, nomadic raiders who attacked Israel immediately after the Exodus and continued to plague them.

Now, we must understand that the Amalekites were not merely another enemy on the long list of Israel's adversaries. These ones were something more relentless. They were a shadow that kept falling across the path of a people trying to find their footing in the world.

Whereas the Egyptians had imperial power and a civilization with pyramids and scribes and gods carved in stone, the Amalekites had none of that grandeur. They built nothing that would last. They planted no vineyards, raised no temples, and left no inscriptions boasting of their glory. However, what the Amalekites had was speed, cunning, and an almost supernatural instinct for striking at the moment of greatest vulnerability.

Their first appearance in the biblical record sets the tone for everything that follows. In Exodus 17, the children of Israel have barely caught their breath after crossing the Red Sea. The euphoria of deliverance is still fresh when the Amalekites descend on Rephidim. There is no declaration of war nor demand for tribute. They simply come, fast and hard, out of the desert.

Joshua is dispatched to fight them while Moses stands on the hill above, arms raised, holding the staff of God. The battle was a very strenuous one, and it revealed that fighting the Amalekites would always demand more than ordinary effort. They were not a foe you could simply outlast by keeping your nerve. These ones required sustained, communal, and almost prayerful resistance.

TOPIC: Rootedness

Scripture: "Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13

*Message*

To stand firmly to the end in God's perfect Will as individual believers and as a church, we must emphasize rootedness. Remember that a tree does not resist the wind by refusing to grow in an open field but rather resists by driving its roots deeper than the storm can reach.

This means returning, deliberately and consistently, to the disciplines that anchor the soul. Reading of Scripture should not be approached as a religious duty but as a genuine encounter with the living Word. Prayer should not be regarded as a ritual opener to meetings, but as a real dependence on a God who is actually there.

Community with other believers should not merely be for social warmth but for the kind of honest accountability that says, "I have noticed you drifting, and I will not pretend so I won't hurt your feelings."

We must be vehemently rooted in these last days. We must recover the holy habit of remembrance, where we keep reminding ourselves and community of who God is and what He has done, so that today's cultural narrative does not become the loudest voice in the room.

The church that survives persecution survives because its faith has been tested and proven. The church that survives persuasion survives because its faith has been cultivated as it is watered daily, guarded deliberately, and held with both conviction and humility.

Stand firm, not in noise, but in rootedness.

TOPIC: A Great Threat To Faith (2)

Scripture: "Do not be conformed to this world..." (Romans 12:2).

*Message*

The Israelites were never more spiritually compromised than when they were comfortable. While Egypt broke their bodies, it couldn't break their identity because we read that they still cried out to God. However, it was Canaan, the land of abundance and neighboring cultures, that broke their hearts.

Like we have seen in previous studies, the idols of Baal did not conquer Israel militarily, but they were adopted gradually, socially, one household compromise at a time, until the prophet Elijah stood alone on a mountain asking a people who still claimed to know God: "How long will you waver between two opinions?" (1 Kings 18:21).

Anyone can gradually slip to this stage of comfortable wavering today, where God is neither fully abandoned nor fully followed. This is deeply effective because it appeals not to our fears but to our desires. We can talk about our desire for belonging, for ease, and for relevance.

The culture does not tell the believer "abandon your God." It tells him, "relax your convictions, you will be more likable." It tells the young Christian woman, "your faith is beautiful, just keep it private." It tells the church, "you can keep your Jesus, just don't bring Him into these conversations."

Little by little, faith is renegotiated, not surrendered in a moment quite alright, but leased away in small, seemingly reasonable installments. We must, therefore, build our defense, both as individual believers and as a church. The answer to cultural persuasion is not to build higher walls and engage less and isolation. Remember, Jesus did not pray that His disciples would be taken out of the world, but that they would be kept from the evil one while remaining in it (John 17:15).

The church is meant to be in the world. We must be present, engaged, and visible. The defense to cultural persuasion is rootedness. A tree does not resist the wind by refusing to grow in an open field. Rather, it resists by driving its roots deeper than the storm can reach.

TOPIC: A Great Threat To Faith (1)

Scripture: "Do not be conformed to this world..." (Romans 12:2).

*Message*

Many times, we look toward persecution as the greatest threat to faith. Nevertheless, we must be reminded historically that the church has always survived vehement persecution, and it keeps flourishing at all times and in all places, even in regions of the world where believers are most persecuted

However, there is a great threat to faith in persuasion. You can take a look around several secular nations and territories that used to be Christians but which are now so ungodly, and you discover that many of such were victims of persuasion and not outright persecution. The slow pressure of a culture that says “You don’t need God that much.”

This is the whisper that has emptied more cathedrals than any emperor's decree ever could.

You know, persecution announces itself, with the noise, chains, with fire, and with ultimatums. And when it does, the believer knows exactly what is at stake. You either stand or fall. History shows us, remarkably, that when the lines are that clear, most believers stand.

But persuasion is different. Persuasion does not knock down the door but simply leaves it slightly ajar, day after day, until you no longer remember why it was ever closed. It rarely begins with an outright denial of God but with a gentle repositioning where faith moved from the center of life to the edges.

Sunday mornings become negotiable. Prayer becomes occasional. The Bible becomes a book you respect more than you read. God is still acknowledged, but He is no longer consulted. He becomes, as A.W. Tozer once warned, "a heavenly grandfather" who is present in sentiment but absent in authority.

When Apostle Paul was writing to the church in Rome, he didn't really warned them about the heavy persecution that will come their way (Rome was a city that would later shed Christian blood in its arenas). Rather, he warned them about conformity. "Do not be conformed to this world," he wrote, "but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Romans 12:2).

TOPIC: Beware Of Subtle But Nasty Influencers (2)

*Message*

A large chunk of today's culture has been trying to make holiness look too extreme, and here is something we Christians must be very cautious about. Like the children of Israel did in their day, we are also contending with the spirit of the Sidonians.

One of the things we should learn from the situation with the Israelites is how the Sidonians can be transgenerational in their subtle warfare. They ensured one Israelite generation tolerated the shrines, then the next generation attended them occasionally, and then the third generation could not remember why the difference had ever mattered. Sidonian influence slowly wiped the conviction that Yahweh alone is Lord.

Consider a family today that once built its life around faith. Generation 1 is known for regular prayer, scripture-centered life, and strong convictions. But when it got to Generation 2, church attendance became occasional, and cultural values began to mix with faith. By the time we arrived at Generation 3, faith became symbolic while culture became the real authority.

Dear reader, today’s Sidonians rarely attack faith openly. Rather, they keep saying things like, "Faith is fine… just don’t take it too seriously.” “Believe in God… but live however you want.” “Holiness is unnecessary.” Modern Sidonians speaks through entertainment industries, social media influencers, cultural trends, ideological movements, commercial pressures, etc.

They rarely forbid faith but simply make it look irrelevant. Remember that the Sidonians in the Bible didn't want Israel’s land but wanted Israel’s loyalty. Their war was not against bodies but against souls.

TOPIC: Beware Of Subtle But Nasty Influencers

*Message*

The ancient city of Sidon was one of the wealthiest and most sophisticated cities in the world at the time. Think of it as the New York, Paris, Dubai, and Silicon Valley of the ancient world combined. They dominated trade, fashion, craftsmanship, and culture. They were merchants, influencers, and cultural exporters. Their greatest weapon wasn’t the sword but seduction through culture. Unfortunately, God's people kept buying what they were selling.

Let's bring this home to our day. Imagine a small rural community that values simplicity, faith, and family traditions. Then suddenly, streaming platforms arrive, global brands dominate fashion, social media influencers redefine success, celebrities redefine morality, etc.

Now, nobody forces the community to change. But slowly, old values begin to look outdated, faith begins to look restrictive, discipline begins to look unnecessary, and eventually, the culture shifts. This is exactly how Sidon influenced Israel.

They didn’t conquer Israel, but they only captured its imagination. Even today, dear reader, you must beware of subtle and nasty influencers aiming at corrupting your imagination.

The Sidonians had the worship of Astarte, which represented sexuality and fertility. They could indulge their desires and call it worship. Imagine a religion that told people that their cravings are sacred, their desires are divine, and no holiness or discipline required.

Today, when you consider modern conversations about sexual ethics, marriage, modesty, faithfulness, and moral boundaries; the message from mainstream culture is “Why be so strict?” or “Why be so old-fashioned?” Therefore, holiness begins to look unnecessary, faithfulness begins to look embarrassing, while compromise becomes socially rewarded.

Dear reader, guard your heart against voices and influences, aiming at subtly pushing you into compromises.

TOPIC: Dealing With Influential Enemies (4)

*Message*

Remember, the Sidonian warfare was different from others in that it has nothing to do with battle weapons that kill the body. The soul of the Israelites was the prize.

The Sidonians evangelised their civilization subtly and confidently. That civilizational confidence is precisely what made the Sidonian influence so corrosive across the period of the judges. Israel did not fall into Baal worship because Israelites were uniquely wicked, but because they were human, and the offer on the table was compelling.

Remember that the children of Israel were getting married to the Sidonians and their Canaanite neighbors. So, we have many children who grew up watching their mothers light incense before Asherah poles. We also have farmers who had a bad harvest while their Canaanite neighbour prospered, and they came to the wrong conclusion that it was Baal that helped their neighbours.

One generation tolerated the shrines. The next generation attended them occasionally. The third generation could not remember why the difference had ever mattered. Sidonian influence slowly wiped the conviction that Yahweh alone is Lord.

Isreal slowly lost her identity and protection, opening the door to oppression that was the natural consequence of a people who had dismantled the only foundation their common life was built upon.

Dear reader, even as believers today, we still have Sidonians to contend with. They represented any sophisticated cultural presence that does not attack faith with arguments so much as it renders faith embarrassing, irrelevant, or commercially inconvenient.

Finally, the Sidonians in the Bible time could offer cedar and cloth, with a religion tailored to human appetite. What they could not offer was a God who remembered His promises in the dark, who came down into the suffering, and who refused to let His people go.

TOPIC: Dealing With Influential Enemies (3)

*Message*

In the Bible, we saw a living embodiment of what unchecked Sidonian influence produced, in the person of Jezebel. She was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, and when Ahab of Israel took her as his wife, he did not merely acquire a political alliance but imported an entire religious system.

Jezebel did not hide her gods in the back room but was funding 450 prophets of Baal as well as 400 prophets of Asherah from the royal table. She systematically hunted down the prophets of Yahweh and had them killed. She wielded her husband's authority to seize a man's vineyard through judicial murder and felt no moral tremor afterwards.

Indeed, Jezebel was the product of a world in which there was no Yahweh, no covenant, no law written on stone that stood above the will of kings. Sidonian religion had no such inconvenience. Jezebel was so dangerous because to her own people and by her own logic, she was devout. It felt like she was only culturally confident, and what we considered as atrocities were nothing serious to the Sidonians.

Even after Elijah called down fire from heaven and killed the prophets of Baal, Jezebel wasn't still broken since her commitment was not merely religious but civilizational. She believed Sidonian culture was simply better, more sophisticated, and more honest about human nature.

There was this popular feeling that Sidonian religion is not burdensome, compared to the demands of Yahweh, who insisted on exclusive worship and inconvenient holiness. Even as believers today, we must be wary of cultural and religious practices that subtly suggest freedom from the "inconvenient holiness" required by our faith.

TOPIC: Dealing With Influential Enemies (2)

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Sidonians …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

The worship of Baal and Astarte was a tool in the hands of the enemy against God's people. Baal was the storm god, the god of rain and harvest, the deity credited with the fertility of the land. Remember that their society was one where subsistence agriculture was the order of the day, and a failed harvest meant starvation. So, when the clouds gathered and the former rains came, Baal's devotees credited him.

On the other hand, when drought crept in, Baal priests promised that the right rituals, the right offerings, and the right acts of worship could coax him back to life. Hence, the whole year was dramatized in his worship.

Now, picture how Israel's farmers, watching their neighbors' fields and listening to Sidonian traders speak of Baal's power, were perpetually tempted to tilt towards trying him out.

Astarte (known as Ashtoreth in the Hebrew texts) was his feminine counterpart, the goddess of fertility, sexuality, and war. Her worship involved cult prostitution at high places and sacred groves. The Sidonian religious system accommodated the appetites of human nature with divine sanction.

You could worship Astarte and indulge your flesh and call it sacred. You could worship Baal and believe you were simply being pragmatic about agriculture. The whole system was engineered, consciously or not, to make faithfulness to Yahweh feel unnecessary, restrictive, and out of step with the world.

This is precisely why the Lord identified the Sidonians as a snare. The warning had been issued plainly before Israel ever entered the land. The nations left among them would serve as a test, "to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses" (Judges 3:4).

The Sidonians, in their seductive cultural brilliance, were perhaps the most refined version of that test. While swords could be resisted, prosperity and beauty are far harder to refuse.

After God reminded His people of their deliverance from the Philistines, the next enemy-nation highlighted was the Sidonians. The Sidonians (Judges 1, 3) were Phoenician dwellers in the north. These were associated with the worship of Baal and Astarte, representing the corrupting influence of Canaanite idolatry.

It is important to know that the Sidonians were not conquerors in the traditional sense. They did not ride in on war horses with drawn swords or lay siege to Israelite cities. However, their danger was far more subtle, seductive, and far more deadly. They were merchants of the soul, traders in the currency of false worship, and Israel kept buying what they were selling, unfortunately.

Sidon, in the ancient world, was one of the most prosperous cities in the then known world, as it was a hub of maritime trade, purple dye production, and cultural sophistication. History told us that the Sidonians were craftsmen of extraordinary skills. Their glass, their textiles, their carved ivory, and their cedar wood were all prized across the ancient Near East.

Don't forget that even Solomon, in all his glory, went to Sidon for the timber and the craftsmen needed to build the very Temple of God. There was something magnetic about Sidonian culture. It was cosmopolitan and refined where Israel was pastoral and rugged.

But woven through every thread of the glittering Sidonian culture was the worship of Baal and Astarte. And this became a tool in the hands of the enemy against God's people.

Lord, grant me discernment to recognize the subtle influences of the enemy in my life. I declare that I will not be swayed by the allurements of the world, but will remain steadfast in my devotion to You.

TOPIC: When the Enemy Looks More Advanced Than You

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Philistines …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

There are seasons in life when the enemy we face looks far more equipped than we are. Yes, Israel experienced this with the Philistines. Where a technologically, economically, or structurally superior power seems unbeatable, yet the lesson remains the same that God can overturn overwhelming advantage.

A small tech startup launches a new product meant to solve a problem in education. Meanwhile, massive technology companies control the market. These are companies with billions of dollars, huge engineering teams, global servers, and powerful marketing networks. The startup has only a few developers, limited funding, and basic infrastructure. Investors are skeptical because the giant companies already dominate the ecosystem.

Yet through creativity, persistence, and a unique idea, the startup builds something users love. Word spreads organically, and eventually, the product disrupts the industry. The startup looked like Israel with bronze tools, while the tech giants looked like Philistines with iron weapons. But innovation, purpose, and perseverance overturned the imbalance.

It is very necessary not to underestimate what God can do with small beginnings. Dear reader, your lack of resources does not equal a lack of destiny. "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit," says the LORD." (Zechariah 4:6).

In some communities around the world, people face deep systemic problems, including corruption, poverty, broken institutions, or discrimination. The systems look immovable and power structures seem permanent. But over time, courageous leaders arise and reformers speak truth. Then, small victories accumulate, and eventually, systems begin to change. History is full of such examples.

Just as the Philistines built powerful city-states like Gaza and Ashdod, some systems today appear too strong to challenge. But power structures that look permanent can collapse when confronted by truth, courage, and divine intervention.

Do not assume the system will always win, since God has repeatedly shown in history that structures of oppression are temporary. You keep standing for righteousness even when the odds seem overwhelming.

*Message*

We should realise that even in our today's world, there will always be a power in the room that has more resources, better technology, greater organization, and more visible strength. The Philistines are a symbol of every Goliath out there.

Let's remember the incident revolving around Goliath himself, the most famous Philistine. That giant warrior from Gath who stood over nine feet tall, wore bronze armor weighing over 125 pounds, and carried a huge spear whose shaft was described as being like a weaver's beam. He was the ultimate expression of what Philistine technological and physical power could produce. Indeed, Goliath was an unstoppable weapon in human form.

But the Hebrew boy, David, killed him with a stone. David didn't bring the giant down with a matching sword or an armor of his own. The young shepherd boy couldn't even boast of years of military training designed to compete on the Philistines' terms.

But we could see a shepherd boy, a sling, a stone from a brook, and a God who needed none of the iron of the Philistines to accomplish His purposes. David himself said it plainly before the stone ever left the sling: "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel." 1 Samuel 17:45

The Philistines never truly understood what they were dealing with. They were ignorantly evaluating every conflict on the terms they understood, such as by the metal they possessed, their numbers, walls, chariots, trained soldiers, etc. Hence, they could not account for the strange but divine power that kept overturning their calculations.

Indeed, the Philistines could monopolize iron, but they could not monopolize the presence of God. For the Israelites, God's people, the presence of God is all they need for continual victory. Don't ever forget that your enemy's greatest strength is still infinitely smaller than your God.

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Philistines …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

It is important to know that the technological advantage of the Philistines was real. This is not a case of the Bible dismissing or minimizing what the enemy brought to the table. We should know that the iron was real. The chariots were real. The five fortified city-states were real. The organized military command was real.

Scripture does not ask us to pretend that the odds were even, because they were not. What Scripture does is demonstrate, again and again, that even genuine material superiority means nothing when it is arrayed against the purposes of God.

Dear reader, let's travel to 1 Samuel 4 and 5, where the Philistines had defeated Israel in battle and captured the ark of the covenant. They had brought the ark triumphantly to Ashdod, placing it in the temple of their god Dagon as a trophy. For the ignorant enemies, they felt their god had defeated the God of Israel.

However, the next morning, the priests of Dagon arrived at the temple to find their statue fallen face-down before the ark. Thinking it was a brief mistake, they stood it back up. However, the following morning, it had fallen again, this time with its head and both hands broken off at the threshold, and plague broke out across Ashdod. Even as they moved the ark from one city-state to the other, the plague followed.

The Philistines, with all their sophistication and military might, had an ark problem they could not solve with iron or strategy. After seven months, they sent the ark back to Israel on a cart pulled by two cows, accompanied by golden offerings shaped like the tumors that had afflicted them. This was a remarkable and humiliating acknowledgement that they had been handling something far beyond their capacity to contain.

*Message*

Let's talk about how God delivered His people from the Philistines by the hands of Samson at different times. From the book of Judges, we discovered that Samson's entire life was a prolonged, often chaotic, deeply personal confrontation with Philistine power.

The man moved through their territory, lived among them at times, married one of their women, and still could not escape the divine calling that had marked him before birth. When the Philistines burned his wife and her father, Samson retaliated by catching three hundred foxes, tying torches to their tails in pairs, and releasing them through the Philistine grain fields.

The entire harvest of the Philistines, the economic engine that fed the city-states, went up in flames. Fire carried by foxes, coordinated by one man operating in grief and fury, undid the agricultural wealth of an organized coastal civilization.

Later, the Philistines ambushed Samson at Lehi with a large force. Now, remember that the man had no sword nor spear. However, he reached down and picked up the jawbone of a donkey (a discarded, dried-out animal bone lying on the ground), and with it, killed a thousand men. A thousand soldiers, armed with iron weapons, fell to a jawbone.

The Philistines must have felt they were fighting something beyond human. And they were right, though not in the way they imagined. The power was not in Samson's muscles. It was in the Spirit of the Lord that moved upon him.

*Message*

In these ancient times, while Israel was still largely working with bronze, the Philistines had mastered iron metallurgy, and they jealously guarded this technological advantage. If an Israelite needed even a farming tool sharpened, he had to travel to a Philistine workshop and pay their price for it.

Imagine an Israelite farmer sharpening his plowshare in a Philistine workshop, under the watchful eye of the very people oppressing him, paying a foreigner just to keep his fields workable. Every swing of the hammer in that shop was a reminder of who was in charge.

The Philistines had a superior army with better weapons. They can boast of organized city-states, like Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath, with five powerful lords governing the five fortified cities.

In spite of all these, they could not finish off Israel because the conflict was never truly about iron versus bronze, or chariots versus foot soldiers, but it was about which power stood behind each army.

Let's consider the man Shamgar, who was mentioned briefly but memorably in Judges 3:31. Here is a man who had no iron weapon, no chariot, no military unit at his back. What he had was an ox goad, which is a long wooden stick tipped with metal that was used to prod cattle. That was his only physical weapon. And with it, Shamgar struck down six hundred Philistine soldiers. Six hundred!

Shamgar didn't bring down six hundred Philistine soldiers via the might of his strength but by a divine power higher than him. Apparently, when God decides a battle is over, the sophistication of your arsenal becomes irrelevant.

Scripture: "Did I not deliver you from the Philistines …?” — Judges 10:11–12

*Message*

We have considered how God delivered His people from their first enemy-nation, the Egyptians (representing deliverance from foundational, systematic slavery and bondage), then the Amorites (an enemy encountered in the wilderness), and then the Ammonites (representing internal, familial betrayal and harassment).

After the Ammonites comes the Philistines (Judges 3). The Philistines are a representation of coastal and technologically superior foe that was a constant major source of oppression for Israel. The good thing, however, was that, even with their superior technologies, they keep falling before the God of Israel.

It is necessary to know that, unlike the Amorites, the Philistines were not a ragtag band of desert wanderers. They were a sophisticated, organized, and militarily advanced people who had settled along the fertile Mediterranean coastline of Canaan. And they brought with them something Israel simply did not have, namely iron.

While Israel was still largely working with bronze, the Philistines had mastered iron metallurgy, and they jealously guarded this technological advantage. The book of 1 Samuel later tells us plainly that the Philistines had instituted what amounted to an ancient arms embargo, the fact that no blacksmith was permitted to operate in all of Israel, lest the Hebrews forge swords and spears.

It was so bad that if an Israelite needed even a farming tool sharpened, he had to travel to a Philistine workshop and pay their price for it. It was economic control through technological monopoly, the kind of leverage that modern nations still use against weaker rivals.

The Philistines also fielded chariots of iron, which are mobile war platforms that turned open battlefields into killing grounds. Against such machinery, Israelite foot soldiers armed with whatever they could find must have looked entirely outmatched. It was the ancient equivalent of facing tanks with farming tools. The disparity was not marginal but was indeed overwhelming.

And yet, the Philistines kept losing, for God was with His people, even the LORD of Hosts!
