Reggae legend Sly Dunbar, who played with everyone from Bob Marley to The Rolling Stones, has died at the age of 73.

One of the genre's most revered drummers, he played on tracks such as Bob Marley's Punky Reggae Party and Dave and Ansell Collins' classic, Double Barrel.

However, he was better known as half of the production team Sly & Robbie - who produced groundbreaking hits for everyone from Peter Tosh and Black Uhuru, to non-reggae acts like Bob Dylan, Grace Jones and Ian Dury.

Dunbar's death was first reported by his wife, Thelma, who told the Jamaican newspaper The Gleaner she had found him unresponsive on Monday morning. The musician's agent and publicist confirmed the news to the BBC.

Born Lowell Fillmore Dunbar in Kingston, Jamaica, he started out playing on tin cans, after watching Lloyd Knibbs and the Skatalites on television.

"I saw [Knibbs] playing and I thought, 'I want to be a drummer' because he's the hardest worker in the band," he said in a 1997 interview.

"He's my idol! In some ways, I'm self-taught but I got a lot of help from other drummers by watching them play."

In his teens, Dunbar met bassist Robbie Shakespeare and formed the rhythm section of the Revolutionaries, who became regular session musicians at the famed Channel One recording studio.


Their sound differed from the melody-rich music of Bob Marley, with a heavier emphasis on the beat - including the pioneering "rockers" rhythm, which introduced more syncopation and energy to the music.


They spent the 1970s working with major reggae acts like Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown and Barrington Levy, while touring the US with Peter Tosh.

According to legend, the duo lived on bread and water in that period, hoping to save enough money to start their own production company.

Taxi Records was duly founded in 1980, and nurtured a new generation of Jamaican artists such as Shaggy, Shabba Ranks, Skip Marley, Beenie Man and Red Dragon.

Around the same time, they provided the thunderous beats on Grace Jones's hit 1981 album Nightclubbing, which opened the doors for them to work with some of rock and pop's greatest - from Dylan and Joe Cocker, to singers like Marianne Faithfull, Madonna and Sinead O'Connor.

At home, they earned a reputation for updating the sound of reggae by incorporating more electronic instruments and textures.

Later on, they developed a bright and melodic take on dancehall with the duo Chaka Demus & Pliers, scoring hits with songs such as Tease Me and Murder She Wrote in the early 1990s.

At one point, Shakespeare (who died in 2021) estimated that he and Dunbar had taken part in more than 200,000 recordings, either their own or as backup musicians or producers for other artists.

"When you buy a reggae record, there's a 90% chance the drummer is Sly Dunbar," producer Brian Eno told the New Music New York festival in 1979.

You get the impression that Sly Dunbar is chained to a studio seat somewhere in Jamaica, but in fact what happens is that his drum tracks are so interesting, they get used again and again."

Dunbar's wife said she had found him unresponsive in bed at around 07:00 on Monday, 26 January.

"I went to wake him up and he wasn't responding, I called the doctor and that was the news," she said.

An exact cause of death was not given, though Dunbar had reportedly been ill for some time.

"Yesterday was such a good day for him," Thelma told Jamaica's Gleaner newspaper

"He had friends come over to visit him and we all had such a good time. He ate well yesterday... sometimes he's not into food. I knew he was sick... but I didn't know that he was this sick."

Among those paying tribute was British DJ David Rodigan, who called Dunbar a "true icon" and "one of the greatest drummers of all time".

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu is "in great shape" despite falling over at a reception ceremony in Turkey, one of his aides said.

Tinubu, 73, was being welcomed by his Turkish counterpart at an official ceremony in the capital, Ankara, when he stumbled.

After walking past a line of soldiers and dignitaries Tinubu can be seen on the official video on the Turkish president's X account moving to his right when he stumbles and falls. The film briefly shows people helping the president before cutting to an aerial shot and 45 seconds later Tinubu and Recep Tayyip Erdogan are seen next to each other.

Tinubu appeared unhurt and aide Sunday Dare said he was able to continue with a bilateral meeting.

Video clips of the incident are being shared on social media.

The last time the president fell over in public, in June 2024, he made a joke about it, saying people thought he was doing a popular dance move.

At that time the incident was described as a "mild misstep" by an aide, and there was also a lot of sympathy for Tinubu, including from leading opposition politician Atiku Abubakar, who called it an "unfortunate incident".

President Donald Trump’s suggestion Tuesday that his Board of Peace “might” replace the United Nations is likely to compound concerns that the body meant to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza — and that he will indefinitely chair — will instead become a vehicle for him to attempt to supersede the body established 80 years ago to maintain global peace.


Before Trump’s comments, some diplomats already had myriad concerns over the board’s possible membership and the fact a permanent seat is up for sale at $1 billion. The White House on Friday announced a “founding Executive Board,” including Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and former British prime minister Tony Blair.

And according to the charter draft, a copy of which was obtained by CNN, Trump will serve as indefinite chairman of the board, possibly holding the post beyond his second term as president. Trump will be replaced only due to “voluntary resignation or as a result of incapacity, as determined by a unanimous vote of the Executive Board.” A future US president can appoint or designate the US representative to the board in addition to Trump, a US official said.


Trump has sent invitations in recent days to dozens of countries to join and is expected to host a signing ceremony in Davos on Thursday. A senior administration official said around 35 of the approximately 50 countries invited to join that ceremony are expected to attend. The official did not provide further details.


Questions remain about which countries will actually join the board. Although some, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, have confirmed their participation, others have yet to commit — and some, such as France, have declined.


Russia and China invited
Russia is among the nations invited to join, raising alarm about how a country actively waging war could be involved in an effort to secure peace. China and Belarus have also been invited.


Trump told CNN on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has “accepted” his invitation to join the Board of Peace. He acknowledged that Putin’s participation would be “controversial” but defended inviting “people that get the job done.”

“Putin would certainly use Russia’s membership on the Board of Peace to undermine the UN and, by extension, sow further divisions in America’s alliances,” said Robert Wood, a former deputy US ambassador to the UN.


Putin is not a man of peace, and I don’t think he belongs in any organization with peace in the name,” British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he has accepted Trump’s invitation to join the Board of Peace, even though he has openly fumed at the inclusion of Turkish and Qatari officials on the executive board for the implementation of the 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan.


There are major concerns among some officials that the board’s broad charter is an attempt to replace the work of the UN, an organization that Trump has consistently berated. The charter draft, which was sent along with the invitations to join, does not even reference Gaza.


The charter describes the Board of Peace as “an international organization that seeks to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict.”

Trump on Tuesday seemed to confirm that intention as he took a swipe at the UN, saying his board “might” replace the international body.

“The UN just hasn’t been very helpful. I’m a big fan of the UN’s potential, but it has never lived up to its potential,” Trump told reporters during a White House press briefing. “The UN should have settled every one of the wars that I settled. I never went to them. I never even thought to go to them.”


On Wednesday, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said the organization “will continue to relentlessly work for peace.”

He noted that “there have been any number of organizations … that have coexisted with the UN over the 80 years that the UN’s been in existence.”


“It’s too early to tell what the Board of Peace will look like,” Haq said. “One thing we are aware of is, of course, that the Security Council has endorsed the Board of Peace strictly for the work on Gaza, and, of course, we continue to abide by that resolution.” He referred to a UN Security Council resolution passed last year that codified Trump’s 20-point plan on Gaza.

Allies voice concerns
France and Norway have declined to become members of the board for now, in part citing questions about how it would operate in conjunction with the UN.

“The American proposal raises a number of questions that requires further dialogue with the United States,” Norwegian State Secretary Kristoffer Thoner said in a statement. “Norway will therefore not join the proposed arrangements for the Board of Peace, and will therefore not attend a signing ceremony in Davos.”

Officials of the administration of United States President Donald Trump have said that Canada will regret its decision to allow imports of up to 49,000 Chinese EVs, and that those cars would not be allowed to enter the US.

“I think they’ll look back at this decision and surely regret it to bring Chinese cars into their market,” US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Friday at an event with other government officials at a Ford factory in Ohio to tout efforts to make vehicles more affordable.


Canada in 2024 imposed 100 percent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) following similar US duties. But on Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a trade deal in Beijing that would allow in up to 49,000 Chinese EVs at a tariff of 6.1 percent on most-favoured-nation terms. That move has prompted alarm in the US that it could help China get a broader foothold in North America even as Washington takes an increasingly hardline on Canadian vehicles and parts.


US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the limited number of vehicles would not impact US car companies exporting cars to Canada.

“I don’t expect that to disrupt American supply into Canada,” he said. “Those cars are going to Canada – they’re not coming here.”

The Canadian Embassy in Washington did not immediately comment


Greer, in a separate CNBC interview, called Canada’s decision “problematic” and added, “There’s a reason why we don’t sell a lot of Chinese cars in the United States. It’s because we have tariffs to protect American auto workers and Americans from those vehicles.”


As per the trade agreements announced in Beijing on Friday, Carney said he expects China to lower tariffs on its canola seed by March 1 to a combined rate of about 15 percent, down from 85 percent.

Greer questioned that agreement. “I think in the long run, they’re not going to like having made that deal,” he said.


Cybersecurity of vehicles
Greer said rules adopted in January 2025 on vehicles that are connected to the internet and navigation systems are a significant impediment to Chinese vehicles in the US market.

“I think it would be hard for them to operate here,” Greer said. “There are rules and regulations in place in America about the cybersecurity of our vehicles and the systems that go into those, so I think it might be hard for the Chinese to comply with those kind of rules.”


In contrast, President Donald Trump has said he would like Chinese automakers to come to the US to build vehicles.

However, lawmakers from both major US parties have expressed strong opposition to Chinese vehicles as major US car makers warn China poses a threat to the US car sector.

Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, a Republican, said at the event he was opposed to Chinese vehicles coming into the US — and drew applause from the other government officials



“As long as I have air in my body, there will not be Chinese vehicles sold the United States of America — period,” Moreno said.

Along with Denmark and Greenland, other countries oppose his ambitions, and many in the US have expressed scepticism about an acquisition. As Trump spoke, a bipartisan congressional delegation was visiting Greenland to show support for the territory.

The 11-member group included Republicans who voiced concerns about the president's calls for the US to somehow acquire Greenland for national security reasons. They met MPs as well as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

Group leader Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat, said their trip was to listen to the locals and take their views back to Washington "to lower the temperature".

Trump has said Greenland is vital for US security - and the US would get it "the easy way" or "the hard way" - a reference to ideas to buy the island or take it by force.



"I may put a tariff on countries if they don't go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security," Trump said at the White House meeting on rural healthcare.

Greenland is sparsely populated but resource-rich and its location between North America and the Arctic makes it well placed for early warning systems in the event of missile attacks and for monitoring vessels in the region.

The US already has more than 100 military personnel permanently stationed at its Pituffik base - a facility that has been operated by the US since World War Two.

Under existing agreements with Denmark, the US has the power to bring as many troops as it wants to Greenland.

But Trump has said the US needs to "own" it to defend it properly against possible Russian or Chinese attacks.

Denmark has warned that military action would spell the end of Nato - the trans-Atlantic defence alliance where the US is the most influential partner.

Nato works on the principle that allies have to aid each other in case of attack from outside - it has never faced an option where one member would use force against another.

European allies have rallied to Denmark's support.


They have also said the Arctic region is equally important to them and that its security should be a joint Nato responsibility - with the US involved.

To this end, several countries including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands and the UK have sent a limited number of troops to Greenland in a so-called reconnaissance mission.

French President Emmanuel Macron said "land, air, and sea assets" would soon be sent.

Joe Keshi, Nigeria’s former permanent secretary and minister of foreign affairs, has cautioned that the United States (US) is specifically targeting the flow of global remittances, with its latest crackdown banning 75 countries including Nigeria from obtaining immigrant visas.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, he warned that Nigeria must develop a systematic strategy to engage Washington, calling on Nigeria’s federal government to urgently “reflect and understand” the motivations behind the crackdown.

The veteran diplomat highlighted the potential for a domestic economic crisis if these financial pipelines are constricted.

“If we annually receive over $24 billion from Nigerians abroad and remittances are targeted, that is a staggering sum Nigeria stands to lose,” Keshi remarked.

He further warned that many Nigerian families reliant on these funds could “fall below the poverty line” should the flow of capital be disrupted by the new policies by the United States (US).

According to him, there’s a need for proper coordination to find out what Trump has against Nigeria. “A couple of days ago, he said that 30 percent of Nigerians are living off the state which is untrue. Many Nigerians in the US are hardworking and have two to three jobs”, he said.

The move is expected to affect travel, migration and international relations.

A crackdown on ‘public charges’
The ambassador’s warnings come as the US Department of State announced an indefinite suspension of immigrant visa processing for nationals from 75 countries including Nigeria.

The move represents a significant escalation in President Donald Trump’s efforts to restrict legal pathways into the US since his return to office.

The State Department justified the measures on Wednesday, framing the policy as a necessary step to “end the abuse” of the American system.

Officials argued that the restrictions are designed to prevent foreign nationals from “extracting wealth” through the use of welfare and public benefits.
Scope of the new restrictions
While the full list of the 75 affected nations remains classified, the order is scheduled to take effect on January 21. Key details of the policy include:


Public charge rule: Potential immigrants deemed likely to become a “public charge” will be ruled ineligible.

Procedural reassessment: Marco Rubio, US secretary of state has ordered a pause to reassess vetting procedures to prevent “exploitation” of the US social safety net.

Selective suspension: The freeze applies specifically to immigrant visas. Non-immigrant categories, including temporary tourist and business visas currently remain unaffected.


Existing bans: This new measure builds upon previous restrictions already placed on citizens from Brazil, Iran, Russia, Somalia, and Afghanistan.

National security and economic fallout
The administration’s shift toward more aggressive vetting follows a security incident in November involving an Afghan national in Washington, DC. In the aftermath, the White House banned or restricted entry for nationals from 19 countries, a list that has since expanded to include 24 nations and holders of Palestinian Authority documents.

The implications for these nations are severe; not only are new visas on hold, but asylum cases, citizenship processing, and green card applications have also been frozen for the countries initially targeted.

For Nigeria, the concern remains primarily economic. As the Trump administration moves to “protect the generosity of the American people,” the resulting friction may significantly diminish the billions of dollars in private capital sent back each year.
