Foreign Affairs › US And Iranian Presidents Sign Deal Aiming To End War by Ironfaceman(op): 10:50am On Jun 18 |
The presidents of the US and Iran have signed an initial peace deal aiming to end the war, allowing it to immediately take effect.
The agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a $300bn (£224bn) plan for Iran's "reconstruction", and the US terminating "all types of sanctions" on Iran.
But the issue of Iran's nuclear programme, the main reason stated by the US for the conflict, is still to be negotiated over an extendable 60-day period.
US President Donald Trump, who signed the deal in France during the G7 summit, defended the proposal, saying it would stave off an "economic catastrophe". He warned, though, that the US would "bomb the hell" out of Iran if no final deal emerged.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also signed the document on Wednesday, Tehran confirmed.
Iran's parliamentary speaker and key negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told state media his distrust of the US remained, and Iran's "finger is on the trigger".
"If the enemy does not understand the language of logic, we will enter again with the language of power," he said.
The US and Israel launched the war on Iran on 28 February, assassinating Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military officials on the first day
But since that time the conflict has spiralled, driving up energy prices and renewing inflationary pressures as Iran imposed a de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key trade waterway through which around 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) usually passes.
Trump told reporters in France at the lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains, where the G7 summit took place, that the plan would avert "worldwide depression".
"I didn't want to see economic catastrophe," Trump told reporters. "If you kept this going, that could have happened.
"All I know is every time we talked about the possibility of peace, the stock market shot up like a rocket ship," he added.
Every time we said something negative, like, guess what, we're not going to be able to settle, it would go down very big."
Oil prices dipped after the agreement was announced.
In early Asia trading on Thursday, Brent crude was around 1% lower at $78.79 (£59.21) a barrel, but it remained about $8 higher than before the conflict started
Trump signed a hard copy of the initial deal, called a memorandum of understanding, during a state dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles.
The text says the US and Iran will "commit to negotiating and achieving the final deal in maximum 60 days, extendable with mutual consent".
The agreement says "Iran reaffirms that it shall not procure or develop nuclear weapons", which was Trump's number one condition since the start of the war.
The memo also says that Iran's enriched uranium will be "down-blended" – meaning diluted – on site, under the auspices of the IAEA, the UN's nuclear watchdog.
Originally, the US had demanded that the nuclear material be removed from the country entirely.
As for the Strait of Hormuz, there will be no charges for ships going through the critical waterway for 60 days, according to the agreement.
But the memo leaves open the possibility of future charges. There were none before the conflict.
Iran's parliamentary speaker, Ghalibaf, said in an interview aired on state TV that the Strait of Hormuz "will not return to pre-war conditions".
He suggested the country would charge ships crossing the key passage after the 60-day period in the agreement had lapsed.
While Trump has previously vowed to obliterate Iran's ballistic missiles, he said at the G7 that it would be "OK" for Tehran to have such weapons "if other countries have them".
The first point of the agreement declares the "immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon".
But Israel has said it had no plans to withdraw its troops from Lebanon, and it launched attacks on Hezbollah on Wednesday.
Trump has been growing concerned that Israeli military operations against Hezbollah could upend a deal with Iran. He admonished Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the G7 on Wednesday.
The US president said that Netanyahu was a "good man", but he could do with "a little softer touch".
"You don't have to knock down a building every time someone walks into it that's from Hezbollah," Trump said.
After dinner at Versailles, Trump began his journey back to Washington, where the peace plan with Iran has unsettled lawmakers on both sides of the aisle - including members of his own political party. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crr8z4z2er9o

This world cup is full of surprises. Cape Verde will declare June 15 public holiday I'm sure. I hope Spain is not living in past glories. |
Sports › Greatest Feeling Ever': Cape Verdeans Tell BBC Of Joy At Holding Spain To Draw by Ironfaceman(op): 8:29am On Jun 16 |
The streets of Cape Verde's capital, Praia, shook to the deafening sounds of vuvuzelas, chants and car horns, after the Blue Sharks held European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their World Cup opener. Though the sides shared the points, for many Cape Verdeans it felt more like a win. "It was an emotional moment," said Isa Conceição, a supporter who was watching the match from a packed fan zone. She, like thousands of other attendees, was dressed in a blue national team jersey to show pride in her country's World Cup exploits. Much of the island nation erupted in wild celebrations at the final whistle. "Being a small country and being able to achieve such a good result against Spain, a football powerhouse, is the greatest feeling ever," she told the BBC. Men, women, and children were all dancing to the rhythm of the official World Cup song released by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. As the beats of "nos óra dja txiga" played through the fan zone, supporters chanted along in excitement – some waving the national flag. The word is Cape Verdean Creole for "our time has come." It seemed a fitting phrase after the small country of about half a million people edged continental giants, Cameroon, to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in history. The squad came into the tournament as the underdogs, playing in group H against two former World Cup winning teams – Spain and Uruguay. To France-based visitor Pauline, Cape Verde's performance on Monday could be attributed to the fact that they "played with their hearts." "That's all that matters," she said. "I thought Spain was going to win the match, but the energy, the speed of Cape Verde was just amazing," added a Congolese supporter who was also visiting the islands for the first time. Many other foreigners were rooting for Cape Verde, the archipelago off the coast of West Africa whose idyllic beaches and landscapes attract about a million tourists every year. Across several neighbourhoods, the country's flags were hoisted on windows, balconies, and even on rooftops. Owners of several vehicles plying the streets rejoiced with symbolic honks and screams, most of them either waving the flag or hanging samples by their car windows. The national team's defensive campaign against a football behemoth such as Spain, raised the hopes of citizens that the squad may even make it beyond the group stage. They will play Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in their next group fixtures which will determine their fate. But even if they fail to go past the initial round, many told the BBC they will remain proud of the players' contribution to lifting the country's image. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyer09rd1ro

Politics › 2027: South-east To Adopt Tinubu As Sole Candidate Today — Umahi by Ironfaceman(op): 3:57pm On Jun 15 |
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said that the people of the South-East will declare President Bola Tinubu as their sole presidential candidate in the 2027 general election today.
According to a Sunday statement by the Minister’s spokesperson, Francis Nwaze, Umahi revealed the development on an inspection of ongoing federal road projects across Ebonyi State at the weekend.
The Minister used the occasion to highlight what he described as the unprecedented infrastructure transformation taking place under the administration of President Tinubu.
“South-East are very appreciative of what the President is doing. By Monday, under the leadership of the Governor of Ebonyi State, we will demonstrate this appreciation when we adopt the President as our sole candidate”, Umahi said.
Speaking during the inspection, Umahi showcased several strategic federal projects across the state and the Southeast, explaining that the region remains deeply grateful to President Tinubu for the “tangible evidence of inclusion, fairness and development”.
At the Calabar – Abuja project sites, the Minister explained the strategic importance of a major flyover under construction along the Trans-Saharan Super Highway corridor.
“Let me say that this is the point where the Trans-Saharan Route takes a bend. The essence of this flyover is to resolve the conflict at this point,” he said.
According to him, the Federal Government has already made provision in the 2026 budget to connect the corridor directly to the Ebonyi State capital.
“The road going to the capital city, which is 18km from this point, is included in the 2026 budget, and the Federal Government will undertake the connection to the city centre.”
Umahi stressed that despite funding challenges, work would continue uninterrupted across project sites. “Of course, the contractor has not been paid, but we are creditworthy.
“All contractors being owed will be paid. There should be no stoppage of work because we want to see if we can commission this project by December. The cost is ₦25 billion.”
The Minister described the projects as only a glimpse of what President Tinubu is delivering in the Southeast.
“This is just the beginning. You will see remarkable projects of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the South-East. When we talk about the gains of the South-East under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, some people who do not understand what we are talking about will continue to criticize us.”
He declared that the people of the Southeast have taken notice of the President’s interventions and are prepared to openly express their appreciation.
Umahi was emphatic about the region’s political direction.
“Let it be known that Ebonyi State is not obedient because we want to catch up with the rest of the country, and we will never be obedient. What happened before was an accident of history. It will not repeat itself”, he said.

Sports › Ten Observations After Attending A World Cup Match In The US by Ironfaceman(op): 4:20pm On Jun 14 |
With the World Cup getting into full swing, Al Jazeera offers some tips for fans looking to attend a game in the US.
Los Angeles, California – The United States of America, the land of Donald Trump, baseball, gun violence and endless highways, is now co-host to football’s biggest tournament.
The World Cup is off to a good start for the US, with its team beating Paraguay four to one in Los Angeles on Friday. The result was an electric, hometown celebration, despite the visible clusters of empty seats.
Before kickoff at SoFi Stadium, there were concerns about organisation and logistics, but Friday’s game went largely without incident.
The US, which is organising the tournament with Canada and Mexico, is set to host 78 of the 104 matches in this year’s World Cup.
Here are some observations and tips for fans after the first US-based game in Los Angeles:
Invest in transparent bags: Any bag bigger than a wallet will not be allowed into the stadium, unless it’s see-through. So if you’re attending a game in the US, keep your purse or backpack at home and buy a clear bag if you must have one.
Get ready for airport-style security: The process is pretty standard. Empty your pockets, put your see-through bag in the scanner and be ready for further inspection if the security gate beeps.
Food and drink prices are outrageous: $5.25 for a bottle of water… $5.75 for a small bag of crisps… As much as $21.50 for a beer. Expect to pay at least twice the normal price for food and beverages at the stadium
Get the ticket app: Gatekeepers at the stadium will not accept any alternative to the FIFA app, FWC2026, when it comes to validating tickets. You may be able to add the ticket from the app to your digital wallet before the game, but screenshots and printouts will not do, so make sure your phone is charged.
The traffic is real: Most parts of the US do not have reliable public transport, so driving is the default mode of transportation. Many US host cities are trying to facilitate fans’ arrival to the stadium without the need for a car. For example, Los Angeles has commissioned shuttle buses to bring fans to SoFi Stadium from transport hubs downtown. Still, there was suffocating traffic around the match on Friday. The gridlock remained for several hours after the game.
Plan to arrive early. Also, check local media outlets and the social media pages for the host cities’ municipal governments for the best way to get to the stadium, especially if you don’t want to get stuck in seemingly endless traffic.
Armies of staff and volunteers: Seeking to head off potential problems, US organisers have flooded the games with extra hands. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of workers and volunteers acting as stewards and assisting the crowd at the opening game in Los Angeles. Don’t be afraid to ask them for directions or help.
Law enforcement agents everywhere: In general, US police are seen as more militarised than those of their Western counterparts. At the World Cup, their presence has been exponentially amplified. There were heavily armed officers from numerous agencies everywhere around the stadium
Don’t be too alarmed if you see a 20-something-year-old with a huge automatic rifle and tactical gear at your next World Cup match. That’s just America
Don’t pet the police dogs: Speaking of policing, many agents walk around with their sniffer dogs, who may appear cute and harmless, but don’t try to pet them. The officers won’t like it.
Brace for commercial culture: Take the ongoing trend of the commercialisation of football, and add US capitalism to it. What you get is what’s happening at this World Cup: Everything is sponsored.
Corporations — from soda brands to banks and car manufacturers — have significant presence around the stadium with stations to promote and sell their products.
Don’t expect much around the stadium: Many football stadiums around the world are built in the hearts of their cities. They’re surrounded by restaurants, cultural sites and vibrant communities right outside their gates. That is not the case in the US.
With the abundance of land, dominance of driving culture and the sprawling nature of US cities, many stadiums are relatively far away from city centres and isolated from urban bustle. Depending on where your World Cup match is located, it may not be advisable to count on the stadium area to offer anything other than football https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/13/ten-observations-after-attending-a-world-cup-match-in-the-us

Foreign Affairs › Kennedy Center Removes Trump’s Name From Its Building by Ironfaceman(op): 6:23pm On Jun 13 |
The Kennedy Center has fully removed President Donald Trump’s name from its building, following a court’s orders to reverse the center’s name change before an extended deadline, Executive Director Matt Floca told a judge in court documents Saturday.
Crews placed a tarp over the signage on Friday, blocking any view of the progress made on the removal of Trump’s name. The tarp was still on the building’s facade on Saturday after Trump’s name was said to have been taken off.
A judge had granted the Kennedy Center’s request for additional time to fully remove Trump’s name from the building, giving the arts center until noon ET Saturday after the organization missed an 11:59 p.m. Friday deadline.
The 12-hour extension came after Justice Department attorneys representing the center said late Friday that while work was ongoing, thunderstorms in the Washington area caused delays.
Workers began removing Trump’s name from an exterior wall of the Kennedy Center early Saturday morning, video from a CNN crew showed.
On Saturday morning, a small crowd had gathered to watch the president’s name come down, some of them stopping to take a photo. One man took a selfie with the tarp-covered building behind him, crossing his fingers.
“I just wanted to see (Trump’s) name gone,” JoAnn Jones told CNN. “When a person wants to put their name on a building that you had nothing to do with, you did no work, you just, you don’t deserve it.”
Crews began assembling scaffolding underneath the exterior signage of the building Friday. Shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, workers started to drape a covering around the scaffolding, essentially blocking the view of their progress, as people in a crowd that had gathered to witness the removal chanted, “Shame!”
A little after 3 a.m., crews appeared to be removing the letters, video shot through a small opening in the scaffolding covering showed.
On Friday, an appeals court rejected a last-minute effort by the center to freeze the ruling by US District Judge Christopher Cooper that imposed the 11:59 p.m. deadline, arguing more time was needed for court proceedings play out.
The appeals court did not explain its reasoning for its decision in a brief, unsigned ruling. The panel included Judge Gregory Katsas, a Trump appointee; Patricia Millett, an appointee of former President Barack Obama; and Robert Wilkins, also an Obama appointee.
The judges asked for more written legal arguments to be submitted later this month over the center’s bid to pause the lower-court’s ruling that said it must remove Trump’s name from its building, website, promotional materials and other areas. But even as the legal wrangling plays out in coming weeks, the center must take steps to comply with the judge’s directive. https://edition.cnn.com/2026/06/12/politics/trump-kennedy-center-name-change-deadline
