Kim Jong Un inspects new nuclear plant, plans ‘exponential’ weapons production ramp-up

Kim Jong Un inspected a new plant that makes weapons-grade nuclear material on Wednesday and said Pyongyang plans to “beef up our state’s nuclear forces at an exponential rate,” according to a report from state-run media.

The North Korean leader said that his country has more than doubled its capacity to produce weapons-grade nuclear material in the past five years and that the new plant will help strengthen its nuclear war deterrent, according to the report from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Kim instituted the push for more nuclear weapons under a five-year plan that was implemented after denuclearization talks with the United States, including three meetings with US President Donald Trump during his first term, ended in failure.

News of the new North Korean nuclear plant comes as Washington is trying to strike a deal to end the months-old US-Israeli war with Iran and get Tehran to give up nuclear materials that it could develop into nuclear weapons.

North Korea already has enough nuclear material for up to 90 warheads and is believed to have assembled around 50, according to a Congressional Research Service report from March.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported in March that North Korea has at least two active nuclear enrichment plants, one in Yongbyon and another in Kangson.

The agency said it was monitoring the construction of a new building at Yongbyon “which has dimensions and infrastructure, including power supply and cooling capacity, similar to the Kangson enrichment facility.”

“The new building is externally complete and internal fitting is likely underway,” the IAEA report said.

In April testimony to the US House Armed Services Committee, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Lt. Gen. James Adams, said Pyongyang was “building a probable additional uranium enrichment facility at Yongbyon.”

Whether the facility Kim toured on Wednesday is that new Yongbyon facility or another previously unknown plant could not be determined. The KCNA report did not give a location.

This is at least the third time since September 2024 that state media has published photos of Kim inspecting a uranium enrichment or nuclear material production facility.

Thursday’s KCNA report said the new nuclear plant employed “more sophisticated technology,” and images provided by North Korea showed Kim walking among rows of centrifuges.

Hong Min, a senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, told CNN the new facility reveals a maturation and scaling of North Korea’s nuclear program.

The report “gives the impression that the center of the gravity has shifted from ‘research and production’ to ‘mass production and munitions’” as officials from the munitions industry and the Nuclear Weapons Institute accompanied Kim, Hong said.

Also, by publishing various photos showing the control room, processing pipes and module zone, North Korea “is intentionally highlighting the aspect of a completed factory in operation,” he said.

Highlighting production facilities over more flashy weapons tests or grand military parades shows North Korea is now projecting it has the infrastructure to make good on its plans to field a robust nuclear deterrent.

Along with building its nuclear enrichment capacity, North Korea has been testing a range of missiles over the past years, and it has successfully tested Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) capable of striking anywhere in the United States, according to the 2026 Annual Threat Assessment from the Office of the US Director of National Intelligence.

North Korea’s ascension to nuclear-power status has been cited as something Trump has been trying to prevent Iran from duplicating with Operation Epic Fury.

Critics of Trump counter that his first administration ripped up a previous Obama-era deal to monitor Iran’s nuclear enrichment program and is now trying to strike a similar agreement after three months of war has failed to achieve regime change in Tehran or the destruction of its nuclear program.

A growing North Korean nuclear arsenal is representative of a worldwide trend, according to the 2026 edition of the Nuclear Weapons Ban Monitor.

“The number of nuclear warheads available for use by the armed forces of the world’s nine nuclear-armed states had risen to 9,745, with a combined explosive yield equating to more than 135,000 Hiroshima bombs,” the group says.

2025 was the ninth consecutive year that the number of deployable nuclear weapons increased, the report said.

Russia has the most nuclear weapons, more than 5,400, followed by the US with almost 5,300.

So if we are not practicing forced labor as you said why the sanction.
And if it's by buying goods from countries that practice forced labor. Don't you think the number would increase as 90% of the world bus also from China and India

ATTAHDYE:
I don’t think they are accusing Nigeria of practicing forced labor, rather what they are saying is, Nigeria and the others are importing good from countries that practice forced labor.

That we do not have laws against our trading partners. The US wants us to sanction countries like China and India where we source for cheap goods and forced labor is said to be practiced.

Mind you, US citizens are addicted to Chinese goods and can’t seems to have enough of cheap good from that country.

You can’t make this sh1t up, we are called a 3rd world country for a reason.

Putting Nigerian on a list that contravenes forced labor law is laughable. In Nigeria there's no forced labor but people are force to do hazardous jobs because of the high poverty rate and very low profitable jobs.

Any increase on tax tariff on Nigerian businesses Will increase the poverty rate and swell the number of people forced to do hazardous jobs because of hunger

U.S. moves to block market access for 8 African countries following comprehensive global forced-labor investigation

Trump’s latest trade proposal could hit exports from eight African countries with new tariffs, marking a new phase in Washington’s effort to tie market access to labour standards and supply-chain compliance.

# The U.S. has proposed new 12.5% tariffs on exports from eight African countries due to concerns over forced labor practices.

# The targeted countries are Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa.

# This measure is part of a wider investigation by the USTR involving 60 economies to assess compliance with labor standards in supply chains.

# Unlike previous tariffs targeting trade imbalances, this proposal specifically focuses on forced labor-related compliance.

The proposal, unveiled by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), targets countries that the U.S. says have failed to impose or effectively enforce restrictions on imports produced with forced labour.

Among the 60 economies investigated, eight African nations were included: Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa.

If approved, most products from these countries could be subject to an additional 12.5% tariff when entering the U.S. market. The measure remains under review and has not yet been implemented.

The proposal differs from the baseline 10% tariff introduced earlier under President Donald Trump’s reciprocal trade framework, which affected a broad range of countries as part of an effort to address trade imbalances and market-access concerns.

The new measure is more targeted, focusing specifically on labour-related trade practices rather than traditional trade metrics.

According to the USTR, economies that fail to prevent the importation of goods made with forced labour create unfair competitive advantages by allowing lower-cost products to circulate through global supply chains.

Why these African countries were included in the investigation

The eight African nations were swept into a wider U.S. investigation examining whether trading partners have legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms in place to prevent goods produced with forced labour from entering their markets.

The review covered 60 economies and included consultations with dozens of governments. Following the investigation, the USTR concluded that the affected African countries had either failed to establish effective prohibitions on forced-labour imports or had not adequately enforced existing measures.

As a result, they were placed in the category facing the proposed 12.5% tariff rate. By comparison, countries that have adopted some form of forced-labour import prohibition, or made commitments to strengthen such measures through trade agreements with the United States, would face a lower 10% duty under the proposal

For the affected African economies, the implications extend beyond the immediate tariff threat. The proposal signals a broader shift in U.S. trade policy, where access to the American market is increasingly being linked to labour practices, regulatory enforcement, and supply-chain transparency.

If adopted, the measure could raise the cost of exporting to one of the world’s largest consumer markets, adding fresh uncertainty for African exporters already navigating a challenging global trade environment.

CelebritiesPeabo Bryson: R&B Singer Behind Beauty And The Beast Dies At 75 by Ironfaceman(op): 9:56am On Jun 03
R&B singer Peabo Bryson, best known for his voice on Disney classics like A Whole New World and Beauty and the Beast, has died aged 75.

He died on Tuesday evening surrounded by family and loved ones, his family said in a statement.

A cause of death has not been released publicly, but Bryson suffered a stroke over the weekend and had been receiving medical care.

The veteran R&B singer was the voice behind hits that spanned from the 1970s to 2010s, including Feel the Fire, I'm So Into You, Can You Stop the Rain, If Ever You're In My Arms Again and Reaching for the Sky.

"For more than five decades, Peabo's extraordinary voice served as the soundtrack to some of life's most cherished moments," his family said in the statement.

"His music carried generations through joyful celebrations, great love stories and enduring moments of comfort and inspiration, creating a legacy that will forever live in the hearts of those who loved him and the countless lives he touched through song."

Bryson won two Grammy Awards in 1992 and 1993 for two duet performances that went on to define a generation of Disney films: Beauty and the Beast with Celine Dion in the title track of the film with the same name, and A Whole New World with Regina Belle in the film Aladdin.

"While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit," his family shared. "His legacy and music will live on for generations to come."

Bryson recently performed in a concert with Jeffrey Osborne in the US state of Georgia in May.

He was set to perform several shows for his Golden Touch tour later this year, in celebration of his five decades in the music industry.

Back in April, Bryson celebrated his 75th birthday and shared photos of his celebration with his family and friends on social media.

Foreign AffairsIran Attacks Damage 20 US Military Sites Since Start Of War,,,, by Ironfaceman(op): 9:31am On Jun 01
Iran attacks damage 20 US military sites since start of war, satellite images show

Iran has targeted key facilities across eight countries in the Middle East since the end of February, causing millions of dollars of damage to state-of the-art air defence systems, refuelling aircraft and radars.

Tehran has targeted both US bases and shared military facilities in retaliation to the US-Israeli strikes across Iran and Lebanon over the past three months. The Pentagon says it has hit more than 13,000 targets in Iran since the start of Operation Epic Fury.

Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, has sought to highlight his military's success in striking US facilities. In a statement on Tuesday he claimed the Middle East was no longer a "safe place" for American bases.

While the White House has repeatedly claimed that Iran's military has been almost wiped out, analysts said that the damage seen at US facilities suggests that Tehran's counter-attacks have been more precise and extensive than American officials have previously acknowledged.

A US defence official declined to comment on BBC Verify's findings, citing "operational security reasons".

The US has sought to limit satellite analysis of the conflict by requesting Planet, a major provider, to impose an "indefinite" restriction on new images of Iran and most of the Middle East. The company justified the move, saying that it wanted to ensure its images were not used "by adversarial actors to target allied and Nato-partner personnel and civilians".

BBC Verify has used satellite imagery from other international providers combined with older images from Planet to track the damage caused by Iranian attacks. The facilities are in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Bahrain and Oman. The actual figure could be higher, with some analysts placing the number of bases hit as high as 28.

Among the valuable hardware damaged were three state-of-the-art anti-ballistic missile batteries systems at the Al Ruwais and Al Sader airbases in the UAE and Muwaffaq Salti Airbase in Jordan.

The US is only known to operate eight of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) batteries, which are deployed at bases around the globe and cost around $1bn (£766m) to manufacture. Each battery needs a crew of about 100 troops to operate it while the interceptors it fires cost around $12.7m per round.

Vice-Admiral Mark Mellett, the ex-head of the Irish Defence Forces, told BBC Verify that the batteries are at the core of a "highly complex" regional defence network that cannot be "quickly or easily replaced".

Iranian strikes have also heavily hit US refuelling and surveillance aircraft at Prince Sultan Airbase in Saudi Arabia, expert analysis of satellite images show, with damaged aircraft and smoking craters clearly visible.

One aircraft was identified by a MAIAR analyst as an E-3 Sentry surveillance plane. US media reported that it could cost up to $700m to replace.

Elsewhere, Iranian attacks have also targeted Ali Al Salem Airbase and Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. Analysts at MAIAR identified destroyed fuel storage bunkers, aircraft hangars and troop accommodation in satellite images of the base, which was hit multiple times over the course of the conflict.

And at Camp Arifjan the defence intelligence company Janes identified extensive damage to satellite communications hardware.

The extent of damage caused to US facilities is difficult to quantify, but a May estimate by the Pentagon put the total cost of Operation Epic Fury at $29bn - with much of that likely to be spent on "repair or replacement costs for equipment" destroyed in the conflict. Democrats say this is likely an underestimate.

The report also found that at least 42 aircraft - including F-15 and F-35 fighter jets, 24 MQ-9 Reaper drones and an A-10 attack plane - have been destroyed or damaged since February.

By comparison to the expensive hardware used by the US military, Iran has reportedly made use of cheap, easily replaceable drones in its attacks on targets across the Middle East.

Experts who spoke to BBC Verify said that Iranian tactics had evolved over the course of the war, moving from sprawling barrages of missiles which targeted cities and bases across the Middle East, to more precise, directed attacks.

"[Iran's] opening salvos were optimised for volume—mass waves designed to overwhelm air and missile defences through sheer numbers," said Dr Kelly Grieco, an analyst with the US-based Stimson Centre think tank.

"Within days, however, Iran had shifted to smaller, more precisely targeted salvos, conserving remaining missiles and drones for specific high-value targets and concentrating fire where even near-misses cause significant damage."

An analyst at MAIAR told BBC Verify that the US military "appears to have been guilty of a degree of early-war complacency" in failing to move aircraft out of the range of Iranian drones and missiles as Tehran's tactics evolved.

They said that in the case of Prince Sultan airbase the facility had previously come under fire before the aircraft were destroyed.

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei vowed that "the nations and lands of the region will no longer serve as shields for American bases," adding: "America will no longer have a safe place in the region for mischief and the establishment of military bases, and day by day it will drift further from its former position."

His comments came just days before the ceasefire between the US and Iran came under strain again. On Thursday Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said it targeted an American base in the region, after fresh US strikes on southern Iran.

Dr Grieco warned that should the fragile US-Iranian ceasefire breakdown and fighting resume, the existing damage to US bases suggests that facilities across the Gulf could be vulnerable.

"The current conflict has consumed US and partner air defence stocks at a significant rate," she said.

"There is no rapid path to replenishment, meaning any renewed Iranian assault would be met a fraction of the interceptors available when the conflict stated."

Sorry sweet heart that is Nigerian politics for you

If you know you know cool.
PoliticsNDC Breached Electoral Act In FCT Senate Ticket Process – Aisha Yesufu by Ironfaceman(op): 11:18am On May 30
Activist Aisha Yesufu has accused the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) of subverting the process for selecting the party’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial candidate, saying she could not compromise her values in a process she described as unjust.

Yesufu made the allegation in a statement issued on Friday night, hours after announcing that the party would not be conducting primaries for the FCT Senate seat, effectively ending her bid for the ticket.

The activist had declared her intention to contest the race on May 6 after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying her decision was inspired by the leadership experience she gained in her former party.

Her declaration came amid growing speculation that the party had already resolved to hand the FCT Senate ticket to another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who had been a member of the party before Yesufu joined.

Addressing supporters earlier on Friday, Yesufu urged them to remain calm and focus on the broader political objective ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a subsequent statement, however, she alleged that the process leading to the emergence of the party’s candidate was marred by injustice and violations of electoral guidelines.

“I understood what I was getting into. I knew that the quality of our politics has not yet risen to the occasion, that values-based candidates do not easily emerge by merit in a system built to resist them,” she said.

“But I made a decision going in: I would not compromise my values. I would stand for what is right. I did not leave advocacy to go into politics. I took advocacy into politics.”

Yesufu said she built her campaign on grassroots credibility and argued that the strength of her “SAY-Nation” movement altered the course of the party’s decision-making process.

According to her, the team became so formidable that the selection process “had to be taken out of the open and resolved through a clandestine affirmation behind closed doors.”

She further alleged that “what was billed as a primary was, in truth, a predetermined outcome dressed in procedural formalities”.

The activist claimed that the FCT senate primary process was repeatedly delayed, with venues changed at the last minute and party guidelines ignored.

“The delegate-based process was introduced to be conducted at a central location instead of direct primaries at Local Government headquarters,” she claimed.

“When the moment came, the contest was not decided by delegates in the open; it was affirmed in a closed room, away from the people whose voices it was supposed to reflect.”

She added that while the party may present the exercise as transparent, the events surrounding the process did not reflect fairness.

"The party may go on to release statements about the free and fair nature of the primary, but the facts that transpired, when weighed against conscience and the guidelines of the Electoral Act, do not reflect justice and fairness,” she said

Explaining why she did not immediately challenge the outcome, Yesufu said she preferred to learn from the experience rather than become entangled in a lengthy grievance process.

“I ran to win. But when the process was subverted, I made a choice: I would not exhaust myself in a grievance process designed to wear people down. I chose instead to extract every lesson this experience had to offer,” she said.

“I now understand the architecture of the system in ways no textbook, no punditry, no amount of outside observation could ever teach.

“That knowledge is worth more than any petition I could have filed. I leave this process with something far more valuable than a ticket; I leave with clarity

Yesufu stressed that her account was limited to her experience in the FCT Senate contest and should not be interpreted as a reflection of events in other states.

Despite her criticisms, she maintained confidence in the party’s broader political role ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Despite its shortcomings, the NDC remains the only party that has given the best presidential candidate in the 2027 electoral cycle a platform to run,” she said

The NDC had not issued an official response to the allegations as of the time of filing this report

Foreign AffairsNew York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Celebrates Eid In An Arsenal-themed Outfit by Ironfaceman(op): 5:44am On May 29
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, like many politicians, often leans on the ease of uniform dressing. Since being elected as one of New York City’s youngest (and first Muslim, first South Asian) mayor late last year, the city official has become synonymous with sleek but simple suiting — mainly sporting affordable two-pieces from Suitsupply. But every now and then, Mamdani throws on a surprise alternative, like the Carhartt workwear jacket, personalized with a vintage New York City logo, that he wore during the city’s relentless winter storms.

To celebrate the start of Eid al-Adha (the Muslim religious holiday that honors the importance of unwavering faith, submission, and charity), Mamdani joined hundreds of Muslim New Yorkers for a public prayer in the Bronx, just steps outside of Yankee Stadium, wearing a sporty take on a traditional kurta. (Whether the garment is best described as a South Asian kurta or a Middle Eastern thobe – which is typically ankle-length – is a matter of debate online.)

Mamdani has made no secret of the fact that he’s a fervent soccer fan and that his English Premier League team of choice is none other than Arsenal —who won the Premier League title last week and could be crowned European champions on Saturday. While the crowd that surrounded Mamdani for the occasion wore traditional garments in a number of varying colors including seafoam greens, deeppurples, and classic white linen detailed with shimmering gold embroidery, Mamdani’s inventive jersey easily drew the most attention. It was designed to look like the team’s blue away shirt with lightning bolt patterns and Adidas’ classic three-stripes running along the sides. Taking credit for the design online, co-founder of the Arsenal fan club Brooklyn Invincibles, Jason Andrew, said the “custom kurta” resulted from a collaboration with his longtime tailor and had been inspired by his own family’s “seamstress legacy.”

Mamdani knew what he was doing. The decision to wear the bold outfit grabbed headlines, helping to shine light on the holiday itself while reinforcing his down to earth image — what could be more relatable than proudly repping your favorite team? He was joined by US representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for the outing, where he spoke about Eid’s core theme of sacrifice and its role in his mayoral mission.

“Today as we honor Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden. It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most,” Mamdani wrote on X. “I am honored to be New York City’s first Muslim Mayor and I am determined to lead through solidarity. Together, we are working to ensure every New Yorker can afford the groceries, housing, and child care they need.”

Foreign AffairsJustice Department Launches A Criminal Investigation Into Trump Accuser E. Jean by Ironfaceman(op): 9:40am On May 28
The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The investigation is focused on whether Carroll committed perjury in testimony tied to her two civil lawsuits against the president – one alleging he sexually abused Carroll in a New York department store in the mid-1990s, and a second for defaming her when in 2019 he repeatedly denied the assault, said she wasn’t his type and claimed she made it up to boost sales of a book

Prosecutors’ theory hinges on a 2022 deposition statement by Carroll, 82, that she received no outside funding for her lawsuit, though it was later revealed that billionaire Reid Hoffman had paid some legal fees and expenses.

Carroll’s team declined to comment for this story. Attempts to reach Hoffman on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

The probe is the latest move in the department’s ceaseless, and somewhat strained, efforts to meet Trump’s demands to target his long-standing personal foes.

Under acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the department has pushed to speed up Trump’s campaign of retribution. But the cases he’s brought since taking the reins of the department in April have been heavily criticized and are likely to face challenges in court over allegations of politicization.

But Blanche has been recused from this matter because he worked as one of Trump’s personal attorneys on the Carroll appeals, according to a source familiar with the matter. Blanche has not attended meetings or been involved in discussions about the investigations, and the investigation is being overseen by other officials in the deputy attorney general’s office.

Senior leaders at the Justice Department referred the investigation to federal prosecutors in Chicago, according to two sources familiar with the matter. While Carroll’s deposition took place in New York, one of the individuals who helped cover some of Carroll’s legal fees, Hoffman, has a nonprofit based in Chicago.

Hoffman’s support of the case caught Trump’s attorneys off guard when it came to light on the eve of trial.

In a 2022 videotaped deposition, Carroll told then-Trump attorney Alina Habba that no one else was paying for her legal fees. But two weeks before the trial Carroll’s attorneys informed the judge and Trump’s lawyers that they secured funding from Hoffman’s nonprofit

Carroll’s lawyers said she never met nor had conversations with anyone associated with the nonprofit. Habba said in court at the time that Carroll’s team “conspired to conceal the truth for nearly six months.”

The judge permitted Trump’s attorneys to question Carroll again in a deposition, which has not been made public.

When the trial began two weeks later Judge Lewis Kaplan said he saw no issue with Carroll’s credibility and blocked the lawyers from asking about Hoffman’s funding.

Caroll is still embroiled in multiple legal battles with the president. Juries awarded Carroll millions of dollars in damages, which the president is appealing. Trump has appealed the $5 million sexual abuse case judgement to the Supreme Court and has pledged to do the same with the $83 million defamation case.

The Supreme Court has deferred its decision on whether to take up Trump’s appeal twelve times. The most recent deferral was made Wednesday morning.

In a different case, the president unsuccessfully asked for the Justice Department to join the case as a defendant so that he could argue he is immune from liability. An appeals court panel of judges said the argument was raised too late in the legal process.
