A US citizen and environmental activist Samuel Tunick, has been charged with allegedly destroying evidence after prosecutors accused him of providing federal agents with a passcode that erased the contents of his mobile phone during an airport interrogation.

According to prosecutors, Tunick supplied US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers with a passcode while being questioned at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, triggering the deletion of data on the device.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.


The case has sparked debate over digital privacy and border searches, with Tunick’s lawyers arguing that his constitutional rights were violated during the interrogation.

“Officers were not permitted to disregard all constitutional protections afforded to Mr Tunick simply because he was at the border,” his lawyers said in a court filing.


The defence also insisted there was no evidence linking Tunick to any criminal activity, describing the phone search as an unlawful “fishing expedition” connected to his environmental activism.


If convicted, Tunick faces up to five years in prison

The case is expected to test the scope of US authorities’ powers to search electronic devices at the country’s borders.

US to discontinue visa services in Abuja, 24 other African cities [/color]

The United States has announced a major visa shake-up across Africa, with routine visa services at its embassy in Abuja and 24 other diplomatic posts set to be discontinued effective August 1, 2026.

The US Department of State said the realignment to regional hubs was part of efforts aimed at strengthening national security, cutting government waste, and ensuring more uniform screening, vetting, and adjudication standards.

According to a statement released by the State Department, President Trump’s administration is putting America and Americans first by realigning overseas operations to advance US priorities efficiently and effectively.

“The Department of State is constantly evaluating its overseas operations in order to advance America’s priorities as efficiently and effectively as possible. This includes a visa process that maintains rigorous standards of security screening and vetting and aligns resources and operational capacity with America’s national interests.

“The Trump administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans, and the State Department will continue to provide Americans with appropriate consular services and assistance at diplomatic posts around the world,” the statement read.

Other diplomatic posts affected by the routine visa realignment include Asmara, Bamako, Banjul, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Conakry, Cotonou, Durban, Freetown, Gaborone, Harare, Juba, Libreville, and Lilongwe.

The rest are Lusaka, Maputo, Maseru, Mbabane, N’Djamena, Niamey, Nouakchott, Ouagadougou, and Windhoek.

The State Department stressed that the realignment does not change the operating status of any of the embassies and consulates or the important work they continue to conduct on behalf of the American people.

It also clarified that the policy does not affect any currently valid US visas.

It explained that the immigrant visa categories being realigned include immediate relative, IR; family preference, FP; employment-based, EB; fiancée/fiancé, K visas; adoptions; diversity visas; and follow-to-join asylee and refugee, V92/V93, cases.

The Department also noted that realigning visa services to hubs has already been successful with several African nations and in Europe.

[color=#990000]However, routine visa services, according to the State Department, will continue at US embassies and consulates in Lagos, Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Dar-Es-Salaam, Djibouti, Johannesburg, Kampala, Kigali, Kinshasa, Lome, Luanda, Malabo, Monrovia, Nairobi, Port Louis, Praia, and Yaoundé.

The services to be provided at the hub locations include all routine nonimmigrant visas – tourist, business, and petition-based – as well as immigrant visas.

The Department further stated that visa suspensions designated by Presidential Proclamation 10998, visa bond requirements and immigrant visa pauses for certain nationalities remain in place.

The department, therefore, advised citizens and residents of the affected countries who wish to apply for a visa on or after August 1, 2026, to schedule an appointment and pay the required visa fee at the appropriate designated non-immigrant visa locations or immigrant visa locations.

The announcement is expected to impact thousands of Nigerian applicants who currently process US visas in Abuja, forcing them to travel to Lagos or other designated hubs on the continent.

Nigeria has one of the highest volumes of US visa applications in Africa, with the US Embassy in Abuja and Consulate in Lagos being the two main processing centres for Nigerian applicants

The United States walked out of a UN Security Council meeting Monday when France’s ambassador took the floor, protesting French comments comparing the US to North Korea and other authoritarian states regarding votes on human rights.

Dan Negrea, an alternate representative to the General Assembly and a senior US delegation official, slammed what he called “disingenuous grandstanding” by Paris.

“There is a member of this council that will feign moral outrage and pretend to lecture the rest of us about every topic, whether it’s about the very conflict we’re discussing yet again today, or even those unrelated to international peace and security, like human rights,” Negrea said.


“That is why we walked out during France’s intervention” at the meeting, which focused on the war in Ukraine.

Such a walkout from the Security Council, the UN’s highest decision-making body where both France and the United States

are veto-wielding permanent members, is very rare.

On Friday the United States was one of 10 countries to vote in the General Assembly against extending Volker Turk’s term as UN high commissioner for human rights, joining the ranks of North Korea, Russia and Nicaragua, among others

“The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore,” France’s mission to the United Nations in Geneva posted in English after Friday’s vote.

“Today, it stands alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali & Russia, isolated. And the world no longer listens to it.”


In his remarks Monday, Negrea said: “I remind them that it is the United States that remains the beacon of liberty for the world. As such, we will not be affording them the benefit of listening to their politicized drivel.”

French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont responded to the US walkout, saying: “This year we are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. And everyone knows the role France has played in that.”

He said that France is working at the UN, both in the Security Council and the General Assembly, “to preserve this institution, its independence, and its capacity to act in service of the charter, in service of human rights, and in service of peace.”
