Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation has called on the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, to call his supporters to order and ensure a violence-free election. Director of Media and Publicity of the organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, made the call in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja against the backdrop of the violence, arson and destruction unleashed on President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign buses at Zololo Junction along Bauchi road in Jos North North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Saturday. Fani-Kayode warned General Buhari and the APC not to prepare the ground for the re-enactment of the post-election violence of 2011. According to him, “It is on record that General Buhari’s utterances since 2011 have fuelled violence especially the post-election violence in parts of the north which claimed the lives of many youth corps members who were deployed as ad-hoc staff members for that year’s election. It is sad that up till now General Buhari has refused to apologize to the Nigerian people for that barbaric and shamefulincident or show any remorse for the actions of his supporters. He could not even bring himself to tender an apology to the families of those young corps members that were hacked to death and murdered in cold blood by his agents. “As if that was not enough tragedy unleashed on the polity, General Buhari recently said that the 'baboon and the dog would be soaked in blood if what happened in 2011 repeat itself in 2015." No fewer than 371 traditional rulers in Enugu State have pledged their support to President Goodluck Jonathan in the forthcoming general elections. The traditional rulers expressed their support for the president in Enugu on Friday during a meeting with him as Mr. Jonathan took his electioneering to the state. The Chairman of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Lawrence Agubuzu, assured the president that the state would remain a PDP state. According to him, the president had no problem in the state because the people would always vote for a reliable government. “We are custodians of peace and culture. With the transformation agenda of Mr President, we have gained a lot. “We are not politicians but we urge politicians not to see politics as a do-or-die affair. “We appeal to politicians to deliver issue-based manifestos and not inciting ones,’’ he said. The president later held a closed door meeting with the royal fathers. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/174613-well-humiliate-buhari-south-east-pdp.html The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described APC’s cap in hand scouting for South East votes as will-o’-the-wisp, sheer delusion and a mid-day feverish dream, asking the party to forget the zone as South-Easterners will deliver 100 percent block vote to the PDP in February general elections. PDP National Vice Chairman, South East, Austin Akobundu, in a statement on Saturday said “the South East apart from being an impregnable forte of the PDP, the APC’s ideology of lies, deceit, divisiveness and violence is a vexatious stigma that makes support for it a cardinal sin among the peace loving people of the zone”. “One thing is sure: There is no place for the APC in the South East, so they should not hope to get any vote from the zone. The bitter truth for the party is that the five states of the South East are solidly in support of the PDP and will deliver a block vote for President Jonathan and all our candidates in the February elections. We therefore wish to advise the APC, its Presidential candidate as well as other candidates not to waste energy in the zone,” the party said. Stating that “there is no way the South East will choose the APC, which represents anarchy and violence in place of the PDP, which has brought stability and development to the country in the last 15 years”, the ruling party said APC Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, will be humiliated in the elections as he has nothing positive to offer the electorates in the zone in particular and the nation in general. “When Buhari was military head of state, he did not remember the South East for any concrete project. The only legacy his draconian rule left for Ndigbo was the unjust hounding and jailing of credible South East leaders such as former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and former Governor of the old Anambra state, Senator Jim Nwobodo through a heartless Kangaroo trial that threw justice to the dogs. The extra judicial killing of innocent citizens is scar that even hyssop can’t wash,” the PDP said. Arguing that ‘Igbo adighi ahapu ebe a na-echi ozo, gaba ebe a na-aru agwu’, meaning; “no one leaves a princely gathering with prospects of wellbeing, for the house of exorcisms with accompanying gnashing of teeth,” the statement said the South East is solidly PDP. It therefore advised the APC not to be deceived by the Imo state Governor , Rochas Okorocha and other axial politicians to believe that it has structures in the zone, describing them as a lone voice in a distant ‘ ajo ofia ‘ the evil forest. “For the APC, a party that holds no promise for the South East either in its unofficial defacto conclave or in its de-jure leadership structure or even in its tentative basketing of offices if the miracle of winning power at the centre ever happens, the people will ill afford a train that leads to nowhere. The PDP added that it remained the pre-eminent party in Imo State with formidable structures and very popular candidates saying that the citizens are eager to vote out the Governor and end the misrule of the state by APC. |

Cameroon is calling for international support and a coordinated response against Nigerian militant group Boko Haram. Cameroon's President Paul Biya appealed to the diplomatic community after the release of a Boko Haram video message threatening his country. During a meeting Thursday with diplomats serving in his country, Cameroonian President Paul Biya said a key agreement for Nigeria's neighbors to set up a regional force to coordinate the fight against Boko Haram has not been implemented. He said the international community should have mobilized to fight terrorism that he described as a threat to peace and stability in all countries of the world. Biya said the African Union and other international organizations should have proposed a global response to this global terrorism threat. He added the distance that separated a country from the conflict zone was not a sign of safety. He said jihadist and Boko Haram terrorism could only be dealt with by handling the issue globally and from an international perspective. Boko Haram began its violent insurgency in 2009 in northeastern Nigeria. The group has killed thousands since then, and last year seized control of territory in Nigeria's Borno and Adamawa states. Cameroon shares a boundary with Borno, and soldiers have clashed with Boko Haram militants along the border. Cameroon has gradually built up its forces in the border region and last month President Biya ordered his air force to attack the militant group for the first time. That provoked Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Shekau, to threaten Cameroon with the same fate that has befallen Nigeria. Algeria's ambassador to Cameroon, Toufik Milat, described the threat as "empty." He said Cameroon should not feel that it has been abandoned in its fight against Boko Haram, because terrorism doid not know any frontiers and needs international solidarity to defeat it. He added that Cameroon should not bow to empty threats or give the terrorist group any breathing space because it had so far fought with determination and success. President Biya has vowed to go after the group until it is totally wiped out. But the war is taking a huge toll on Cameroon's economy, especially in the north, which relies on Nigeria for 80 percent of its basic necessities and as a market for agricultural products that are now stockpiling. Biya told the diplomats he appreciated the assistance of the United Nations, Germany, France, Britain, China, Russia, and the United States, but he did not specify the type of assistance Cameroon has received. http://m.voanews.com/a/cameroon-president-calls-for-greater-help-to-fight-boko-haram/2590463.html |

President Goodluck Jonathan has said that his strategy for combating corruption is not by indiscriminate arrest and jail of people. Speaking to party supporters at the flag off of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos on Thursday, Mr. Jonathan said that the best way to tackle corruption is to strengthen public institutions. “I stand by due process. Any country that does not respect due process is a jungle,” Mr. Jonathan said. “They say to be strong is to jail people indiscriminately. For 300 years. Is that where you want to go?” The President began his speech by stating that he was addressing young Nigerians who would be voting for the first time. He asked them to verify from their elderly uncles and aunties the truth about Buhari’s government in the 80’s, adding that they must choose between a vote to be relevant or be treated as a “nonsense person”. “They said they will fight insecurity. When he (General Buhari) was Head of State, did he buy one rifle for the Nigerian soldiers? “Ask them what they did with the defence budget.” President Jonathan also used the opportunity to apologize to federal civil servants for the delay in their December salary, attributing it to the IPPIS system which, he said, shut down after officials attempted to divert some of the salaries. Mr. Jonathan also laughed off media reports that the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, had thrown their weight behind the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC. “Orkar, the leader of MEND, is in South African prison because he was procured by some Nigerians to assassinate me,” Mr. Jonathan said. “The man who is in South African prison for killing Nigerians is endorsing some people.” Earlier, President Jonathan and his ruling PDP had officially opened their campaign towards next month’s presidential and governorship elections in Lagos, with a vow to emerge victorious at the polls. The president and all PDP state governors made the declaration at the Tafawa Balewa Square. In his opening remarks, Ahmadu Ali, the Director of the Jonathan-Sambo Campaign Organisation, said that the PDP, unlike the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, belongs to all Nigerians. “The PDP is not the exclusive preserve of an individual who has turned Lagos into a cow to be milked,” said Mr. Ali. Tunji Shelle, Chairman, Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State, on Thursday said the impressive turnout at the party’s rally in Lagos indicated support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan. The party later presented its flags to the governorship candidates of the respective states. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/174501-jonathan-blasts-buhari-challenges-ex-head-state-disclose-equipped-nigerian-soldiers.html |
