Lagos – The Oba of Lagos, Oba Railwan Akiolu, on Thursday said that President Goodluck Jonathan should not be blamed for the problems of Nigeria. Akiolu said this while receiving Jonathan at his palace in Lagos. He said that many of the problems in the country predated the Jonathan administration. The President was in Lagos State for the flag-off of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) presidential campaign at the Tafawa Balewa Square. He was in the Oba’s palace to pay homage to him and seek his blessings before going to the campaign venue. Akiolu said that fighting corruption was the responsibility of every Nigerian. “What will be, will be; God Almighty will give the best person the opportunity to lead this country. “Mr President, God knows the best; I am happy; what I want are free and fair elections. “I am happy that Mr President directed INEC to ensure that voters’ cards are distributed to every eligible member of the electorate,’’ he said. He urged INEC to ensure distribution of voters’ cards, saying that Lagos had more than six million eligible voters. The royal father urged that security agents should not be unfairly used against any citizen during the general elections. According to him, both the PDP governorship candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, and his APC counterpart, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, are his children. He said that he had presented Ambode’s candidature for God’s blessing at the 2014 Hajj in Saudi Arabia but noted that God would always have the final say. The Oba expressed confidence that Nigeria would be more united after the elections. Akiolu accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of not treating Lagos well during his administration and leaving many problems unsolved in the country. Earlier, Jonathan said that he came to the palace to pay homage to the royal father and sought his prayers and support for his ambition. The president said that the Nigerian government under the PDP had done much for the country, contrary to claims by the opposition. He said that his administration did not believe in blowing its trumpet but determined to meet the expectations of the citizenry. Jonathan said that his administration had revived rail transport system, improved road network, created jobs and implemented policies aimed at economic advancement, among other achievements. Earlier, the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, sought the support of the royal father for both the state and presidential candidates of the party. A former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Wednesday said there are dangers in electing Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the opposition party All Progressives Congress, APC, as the President of Nigeria come February 14. Mr. Fani-Kayode, who is the spokesperson of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team, said the group will expose the dangers he described. He said this at a news conference in Abuja. Mr. Fani-Kayode said the president’s campaign team would run a campaign that focuses on facts, figures and the exposure of Mr. Buhari, “for who he really is”. “It is our full intention to expose General Muhammadu Buhari for what he really is, what he stands for and the great danger that his candidacy portends for the unity of the Nigerian state and the peace and well-being of the Nigerian people,” he said. Mr. Fani-Kayode said the team he leads will also let the world know about the sterling performance of President Jonathan, over the last four years and will also make a strong case to the Nigerian people on the reasons to grant the sitting president, the opportunity to serve a second term. “We believe that we have reached a crossroads in our nation’s history and that the forthcoming Presidential Election is a battle for the very soul and destiny of Nigeria,” he said. Mr. Fani-Kayode said the election would expose the clear differences between Messrs. Jonathan and Buhari, which he described as “light and darkness”. “We believe that General Buhari represents the darkness and that President Jonathan represents the light. We believe that General Buhari represents a return to an ugly past, which is best forgotten while President Jonathan represents our hope for a greater and better future. “We believe that the APC, on which platform General Buhari is contesting the presidential election, represents everything that is unholy and unwholesome in our society and that the PDP represents all that is decent and good,” he said. Mr. Fani-Kayode said the much-touted “change” campaign of Mr. Buhari represents nothing but change from good to evil. “If you want a positive change, you cannot expect to get it from a man like General Buhari whose democratic credentials are questionable and whose record in public office is shameful and disastrous,” he said. The former Minister said most Nigerians do not remember the “atrocities” that Mr. Buhari committed when he was in power, adding that it is the responsibility of his team to “document them and remind the Nigerian people about them”. “Most people have chosen to ignore the number of things that General Buhari has said and the number of things that he has done over the last few months and years that have brought carnage, division and strife in our society and that prove that he is not the sort of person that can be trusted with power. “It is our intention to bring those things to the attention of the Nigerian people so that they can make an informed choice,” he said. Mr. Fani-Kayode said Nigeria should not be run by a man that is not capable of tolerating dissent or by a political party like the APC that has no sense of remorse, restraint or decency and that is not capable of accepting a plurality of views. He said Mr. Jonathan has earned the right for a second term and that, in the next few weeks, his campaign team will make a humble appeal to the Nigerian people to vote for him massively in the February 14 Presidential Election. “By the grace and power of God, we shall prevail,” he said. Responding to a reporter’s questions on whether Mr. Jonathan will travel to the northeastern part of Nigeria that has been under constant attack by the Boko Haram insurgents to canvass for votes, Mr. Fani-Kayode said the president would go to the region and “has answers to all their questions”. “In spite of acts of insurgency in the North-East, the PDP-led Federal Government had done a lot to contain the situation,” he said. He also dismissed allegations of the president condoning corruption, saying no one has been indicted or prosecuted for corruption because “no one has presented credible evidence of corruption against any top government official”. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/174455-will-expose-real-buhari-femi-fani-kayode.html |

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday came down hard on some unnamed Nigerians who he said have been parading themselves as statesmen but are “ordinary politicians” in their utterances. He said being a statesman was not about the offices previously occupied by politicians. Jonathan spoke while playing host to a delegation of the Northern Elders Council in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said politicians who make provocative utterances aimed at causing disaffection and bringing the country down could not be described as statesmen. He said such politicians only engage in such venture because they do not get what they want. He said a lot of lies were being peddled about his government with the aim of painting him black. With time, the President said, Nigerians would know who statesmen are truly are. Details later. http://www.punchng.com/news/some-so-called-statesmen-are-ordinary-men-says-jonathan/ |

The Department of State Services has said that its investigations indicated that the All Progressives Congress had plans to hack into the database of the Independent National Electoral Commission. The service explained that the confessions from the staff arrested at the APC office at 10,Bola Ajibola Street, Ikeja, and the items retrieved from the building showed that the party had an elaborate plan to hack into the commission’s database and inflate the number of its membership. The Deputy Director, Public Relations, DSS, Marilyn Ogar said this at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja. Details later… http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-planned-to-hack-into-inec-database-dss/ |
