A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Benue State, Atoza Hindan, on Friday morning was killed by some yet to be identified gunmen in Kastina-Ala, Kastina Local Government Area of the state. Saturday PUNCH gathered that the gunmen also killed 12 other people in Tor Donga, Vaase and Kastina/Ala. The late Hindan was an in-law to the Senator representing Benue North-East Senatorial District, Barnabas Gemade, and was popularly referred to as former Governor Gabriel Suswam’s father. The deceased’s first son, Terfa, who served as Suswam’s Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, described the killing as unfortunate and shocking. He called on security agencies to bring the killers to justice. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Austin Ezeani, confirmed the killings, adding that three bodies had been evacuated from the scenes. Ezeani vowed that detectives would arrest the suspects. Also in Nasarawa State, no fewer than 100 gunmen on Friday morning invaded Kofar Gwari village in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and killed three members of a vigilance group and two others. The incident occurs at about 1.30am. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the incident happened when some members of the vigilance group were holding a meeting on how to address the spate of reckless killings and kidnapping of innocent people in the area. Two other members of the vigilance group were also injured. According to an eye witness, the gunmen stormed the venue of the meeting with AK47 rifles. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Ismaila Numan, confirmed the incident to Saturday PUNCH. Cc:Lalasticlala |
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday said the South-South geopolitical zone would reflect the performance of the immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who is from the area. Obasanjo stated this while fielding questions from members of the audience shortly after delivering a lecture at the 11th convocation of the Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Edo State. He explained that the 2011 presidential election had presented the South-South an opportunity to produce the number one citizen of the country, as a minority zone, and would bear the consequences of his decisions as President for six years. He also said what the former President did while in office was entirely his. When asked whether he did not share any responsibility in the performance of Jonathan as an elder statesman and former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Obasanjo said, “I have also said that you can help anybody to get a job, but you cannot help him to do it. Let us get it clear, there is nobody who has got into any position who has not been helped by one person or more than one person. “To become Nigeria’s head of state, it was first of all my performance in the war front. Now, if General Yakubu Gowon had not sent me to the war front, you won’t know whether I can perform or cannot perform. “Now he sent me to the war front, I thank him for it. And because I performed, we shared the credit. If I have failed, Gowon would not have shared the credit; he would not have shared the condemnation with me. I will be alone. “Yes as I have said, I believe that opportunity that afforded itself in 2010 to somebody from the minority tribe to become the President of Nigeria; he should never lose the opportunity. “And don’t forget what he did or did not do with it will reflect for a long time on that part of the country and don’t take that lightly. “What he did or did not do with it will reflect for a long time on that part of the country. But nobody will be there who will not be helped, but you voted for him, I was not the only one among 18 million voters who voted for him.” On the leadership crisis rocking the 8th National Assembly, the former President said that the Assembly was experiencing “growing up hiccups” which he said was normal in a democratic system. He said, “You know normally when you are growing up, you have what they call growing up hiccups. And that is nothing to worry about. “It is part of growing up in our democracy.” The former President, however, expressed concern over the high rate of youth unemployment in the country. He said the challenge could leave Nigeria sitting on a keg of gunpowder if left unchecked. Obasanjo said, “Whichever way you look at it, we have a large proportion of our youths who are unemployed. It doesn’t matter the statistics you use; at one time, they say it was 50 per cent. At another time, they say they rebased; we are never tired of rebasing in this country. “They rebased and say it is 25 per cent. Even if it is 25 per cent, that will be about 25 million (unemployed) people. “If we do not do something about it, we are all sitting on a keg of gunpowder because the youths that are unemployed will be angry and restless and any spark will set them off. A recent poll conducted by NOI Polls, an opinion research agency founded by a former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says 70 per cent of Nigerians surveyed approved President Muhammadu Buhari’s performance in office in the first month. NOI Polls works in partnership with a United States-based The Gallup Poll to conduct periodic opinion polls and studies on various socio-economic and political issues in Nigeria. The President’s assessment poll, according to a statement on the agency’s website on Wednesday, was conducted to gauge the opinions of Nigerians regarding the approval rating of the President’s first 30 days in office and the current state of power supply in the country. According to the poll, the President recorded 87 per cent approval rating in the North-East, North-West and North-Central zones while the South-East zone accounted for the greatest percentage of respondents who disapproved of the President’s performance. The poll also revealed that the South-South zone accounted for the largest fraction of respondents who were neutral, with 26 per cent. “With a sample of this size, we can say with 95 per cent confidence that the results obtained are statistically precise,” the agency said. The poll seems to follow the pattern of election results of Buhari in the 2015 general election. Buhari, who contested the office for the fourth time, polled 15,424,921 votes against former President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party to clinch the presidential seat. Buhari won the election in 16 northern states and five south-western states, while Jonathan won the poll in three northern states, the FCT and 12 South-South and South-East states. The statement read, “Respondents to the poll were asked two specific questions. The first sought to assess the opinion of Nigerians on the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari after 30 days in office. Respondents were asked: Do you approve or disapprove of the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari in the past one month? “The outcome revealed that 70 per cent of Nigerians surveyed approved of President Buhari’s job performance in June 2015 (first 30 days in office). On the contrary, 12 per cent of the respondents disapproved, whereas 18 per cent of the respondents were neutral as they neither approved nor disapproved of the President’s performance. http://www.punchng.com/news/poll-scores-buhari-70-per-cent-in-first-month/ Cc:Lalasticlala

It was one surreal day, around 4:00 pm or so, and I was out on our street for a reason I can’t really remember now, I was pretty young then. Then as I got to the maisuya end of our busy street, I noticed this huge and electrified crowd thronging after a slowly-moving convoy. At the center was a white limousine and from the sun roof, was a man full of charming smiles, waving to the frenzied crowd, he looked very smart, handsome and he was also wearing white, all white, the hat too was white. It was quite a dazzling spectacle. The limo was headed towards the city stadium where he had a show. I had just set my eyes on Africa’s greatest magician, ‘Professor Peller’. And would never see him again. But for a young African child who was also seeing a limousine for the very first time or so, it was truly a magical moment for me. He performed and left my state leaving incredible tales of outstanding feats. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a piece on Nigeria’s most famous magician, Professor Peller. For about thirty years, Peller held the world’s most populous black nation spellbound with millions gasping at the whisk of his wand. I hope you find this magical. ¶BIRTH AND EARLY DAYS He was born in 1941 at Iseyin, Oyo State and he was named Moshood Folorunsho Abiola. He would later pick on the stage name of ‘Professor Peller’, an appellation that has stuck to him like a second skin. ¶HIS MAGICAL PERFORMANCES AND EXPLOITS When Professor Peller was alive, he was the most brilliant magician in all of Africa. I am not too sure if the record has been broken. Even in death, Peller remains the greatest of all. He performed not only before princes but also held kings spellbound with his magic. Here is how Femi Oyebode, a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham described Peller and one of his shows in 1972 at the George V Stadium in Lagos (that is the old name of the Onikan Stadium): My last ever visit to the stadium was to see Professor Peller, a magician, and said to be a member of the Magic Circle take on the last of our traditional magicians whose name now escapes me (itself a significant fact). Professor Peller was dressed in black tails, a top hat, a wand in one hand, black shoes and well-cut hair. He was a perfect picture of debonair gentleman and was assisted by an attractive young woman. He flicked his white handkerchief and a white dove flew out. He pulled at his cuff links and flowers bloomed under his command. He was confident, majestic. He was suave and graceful. He levitated his assistant. He cut her in two without drawing blood. He locked her in a cupboard, chained up several times over yet she disappeared! It was a masterly performance. The crowd clapped, hooped. We were seduced against our better judgment. We wished desperately that the traditional magician would enthrall and endear us to his magic, the mysteries of African magic. We were disappointed or shall I say that I was disappointed. When he came on stage dressed only in a loincloth of indeterminate color, you could hear the audience gasp aloud. Was this African magic? This crude, little thin man who seemed recently woken from the dead? He swallowed a stone and turned his backside to us, slipping his loincloth to one side and excreted the stone. Awfulness and shame. He submitted his abdomen to a sharp sword to be sliced open. But by now, the absence of razzmatazz and of finesse had turned us against him. The crowd poured through the gates. That was how disgusted we were. You can say that at George V stadium, in early adulthood I lost two of my childhood dreams. A master at his craft and a consummate entertainer, he cast a most powerful spell on the following African leaders, right in their presidential palaces: -The late President Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo (Eyadema later died after spending 38 years in power, he was the longest-serving ruler in Africa when he died in 2005 (see his picture below). His son, Faure, is currently the President of Togo). -The late President Samuel Kanyon Doe of Liberia (see picture below). There is an interesting story behind his performance for the late strongman of Monrovia. There was a time Peller had a performance in Liberia in the 1970s and the crowd was just too massive. The Liberian government drafted security forces to the venue of the act to control the surging crowd. One of those responsible for maintaining security that day at Peller’s performance was a young man called Samuel Doe. So when Doe became President, he summoned Peller, Nigeria’s finest magician to come perform for him. Such was the stellar performance of Peller. Doe said he was busy controlling the surging crowd and he could not witness the even properly as at that time when he was a junior soldier. -The former President of Benin Republic, Mathieu Kerekou was also one of those who patronized Peller (see picture below). Apart from the Presidents mentioned above, Peller also reigned supreme in Nigeria. It was like there was no other conjurer in the land. Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Premier of the Western Region was one of those he used to entertain regularly. -Peller was a prolific magician with many shows, some of which were the Invisible General, the Escaping Box, Changing Dresses and the Zigzag. One thing with Peller’s performances is that they were executed with maximum finesse and excellence. He was thorough and professional. Perhaps, if not for death, he might have even eclipsed David Copperfield of the USA in fame. Copperfield is presently the greatest magician on earth and the first person to make one billion dollars from magic. -While growing up, he was nicknamed Moshood Olori Pupa (Moshood the Red- Headed Boy). -One of his classical performances included putting his wife in a ‘magical coffin’ and severing the same coffin into two halves with a ‘magic coffin’. There is no spirit at work here, watch how the trick is done here: When Peller was performing, there was really no Internet as we have it today, so it was quite easy to fool people in their millions. Now, YouTube is spoiling the show for many magicians except the most ingenious of them. Here are few more magic clips on YouTube just to let you know they do not conjure any evil spirit or demon, it is nothing but sheer trickery. LOVE, ROMANCE AND MARRIAGE He was described as a very romantic man. His most prominent wife, Alhaja Silifat, fell in love with him while she was still in the secondary school. She confessed that she had always admired him and his performances even before then and each time she watched him perform, her heart fluttered with affection for the fine magician with tribal marks. In 1967, Iseyin Grammar School in Oyo State became the place where Peller planted the seed of love even if he was there to perform but was carried away by the ravishing young beauty in the crowd called Silifat. Hear her: “I am sure he musthave been attracted to me because of my beauty. So, he just whispered to me: ‘Baby, you are beautiful.’ And I said, ‘Thank you.’ He didn’t ask me out that day. For quite a long time, we were friends.” For a couple of years more, they continued dating and Lady Peller said after two years, she said yes to his advances. They got married in 1971 and they already had a child by then. For a man who was a showstopper at any events, it is no surprise that not a few women fell for the enchanting spell of Nigeria’s most famous magician. He was a man of many women and married many of them. However, the best known of these ladies, with whom he performed his magic tricks is Alhaja Silifat Adeboyin Peller (see picture). The whole of Nigeria knew her as Lady Peller and she is most famous for the act in which she was ‘sliced’ into pieces by Peller and had a hard time putting her back. Now 66 years of age with her husband gone and not remarrying, she is tending to her grandchildren while reminiscing over the glittering wonders of an empire of magic that once held sway. Lady Peller was born in Kishi, Oyo State where her father was the Chief Imam and had five children for him, while also raising many other step-children. However, unknown to many, their rosy marriage later had a deep crack to the extent that they were not staying together anymore. When Peller was killed at his Onipanu residence, he was in Lagos State for a function while Lady Peller was living at the GRA, Ikeja. Although they were not officially separated as they still saw regularly, Peller checked on her in Ikeja but met her absence. As at that time, they had already reconciled and were even planning on coming back together before Peller was prematurely silenced by the assassin’s bullets. Peller left a message for her to check on him as he was not feeling well and was rushed to Ibadan for treatment. Lady Peller was furious as to why he was taken to Ibadan since they had family doctors at the Ajayi Memorial Hospital and the EKO Hospital in Lagos but upon getting to Ibadan, she was simply told that Peller was dead. She fainted immediately only to wake up to a bucket of water and intense fanning by family members. She said: “It was a great shock and I had never seen that kind of things. I don’t ever wish to go through that kind of thing again.” While he was alive, he also taught her some magic and ensured she got some training in Michigan, USA. Little wonder they always performed together and as far as she is concerned, her religion is not against the brand of magic she performed with her late husband because according to her, ‘it was not fetish’. She still remembers the very good old days and says she will not remarry and will still marry him over and over again, rounding off: They only want to enjoy what Professor Peller was enjoying for several years. But they can’t have it.” DID HE ACTUALLY CUT HIS WIFE INTO TWO? No. I will not call magic a lie but I will describe it as a well-oiled pack of grandiose dramatization, outright deception, fantastic misdirection and uncanny slyness. There is nothing spiritual about magic, it is nothing but an agglomeration of well-practised tricks. However, if done well, an excellent magician can actually ‘create something out of nothing’ or make the ‘possible from the impossible’ (even if that will look like he or she is going against the established laws of Newtonian physics, it is all an illusion) in a very fluid and convincing manner (in that case, I will call many Nigerian politicians magicians). So what happened that fateful day when Professor Peller allegedly ‘sliced’ his wife into two but could not put her back together and she almost ‘died’? It was at the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos and the Lagos State Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande was present at the occasion to represent Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The event started as planned but then the Peller team decided to throw in a suspense- filled event, as their usual practice when they have events following one another every evening. The essence was to create so much suspense so that they will draw in even more crowd by the next day. So for day one, the idea was to create an illusion that he ran into trouble while sawing his wife in half. But then, the next step involved ‘reviving’ her. After the ‘cutting’, which was obviously done with a lot of dramatic effects, the crowd went into a frenzy and began to shout ‘We want Lady Peller!’, ‘Give us Lady Peller!’. Later in 2012, the 66-year-old Lady Peller was interviewed and asked about the incident and she insisted that Peller actually cut her into two and she even sustained some light injuries. If you really want to clear your mind on this, just watch the video below. Even in hemicorporectomy in surgery where the entire half of a human is severed, survival rate is very low. Enjoy this video and see how magicians ‘cut’ people into halves FAMILY AND CHILDREN He was a wonderful father and some of his children are as follows: -TOYIN -SABURI (aka Pastor Kayode Abiola): Now a pastor, he was born in October 1960 and practised magic like his late father. He gained some degree of prominence before squandering the profits on women, cars and ultimately, drugs. Peller tried his best to assist Kayode when he was alive, he fought with him, took him to court, all to no avail. He later became a changed man after the demise of his father and the dwindling of his own magic firm, which he named Fantastic Young Peller. -NIKE: Probably the most well-known of the Peller children, Nike Peller is a popular face in the Nigerian movie industry where she featured in many Yoruba flicks. On the 20 th of November, 2010, she was made a traditional chief and was conferred upon the title ‘Yeye Agbasaga’ (the Custodian and Promoter of Culture) of Erin Osun, near Osogbo, Osun State. -SAHEED (aka Zeeto): A lawyer (he practised in England) and also keen on sustaining the magic world created by their late father. In July 2013, he made his sister, Nike, disappear and reappear before an audience in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. -SHINA: Handsome and suave, he is always in the news for his partying lifestyle, love for cars and not too long ago, for allegedly shooting a man in a club over an argument. HIS DEATH Yes, Peller was assassinated. It was on fateful day on the 2 nd of August 1997. Interestingly, he was killed the same day that Fela Anikulapo-Ransome Kuti also died. Peller was attacked at his residence in while observing his evening prayers at Onipanu, Lagos State and he was fatally shot by unknown gunmen. Nigeria and all kinds of unsolved murders, brutal killings and blood- curdling assassinations. INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT PROFESSOR PELLER -He bore the same names (Moshood Abiola) with another popular Nigerian and winner of the 1993 presidential elections, Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. -Professor Peller was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, an association for some of the very best of magicians on earth. Here is the Magician’s Oath: “As a magician I promise never to reveal the secret of any illusion to a non-magician, unless that one swears to uphold the Magician’s Oath in turn. I promise never to perform any illusion for any non-magician without first practicing the effect until I can perform it well enough to maintain the illusion of magic.” -Right from their childhood, Peller and Baba Sala, popular Nigerian comedian, were best of friends. While making his movies, Baba Sala would include some of Peller’s magical performances. -During the reign of Peller as the most powerful and influential magician that ever walked the Nigerian soil, there was this tale of bitter and intense rivalry with another magician and herbal medical practitioner from Osun State named Aladokun. Their rivalry was not just superficial, it also had traces of a clash of principles. Aladokun represented the typical African traditional magic while Peller was carrying the flag of the ‘foreign’ and Orient-trained magician. The intense competition brought about by their fights led to even more spectacular displays of magic and illusions. At the end, Peller prevailed, just like Tesla over Edison in the War of the Currents. His wife also stated that the rumour that Peller was once swallowed by Aladokun was false. -Peller was good friends with the late Obafemi Awolowo, his son, Wole and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, all of whom enjoyed his shows and gave him tremendous support. -Professor’s Peller house at the junction of No. 11 Bode Thomas Road and Abe Street in Onipanu, Lagos now belongs to a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). When the house was put up for sale, many of the prospective buyers ran away when they learnt it belonged to the late magician. Nigerians are funny sha…lol! When he was alive, his house was a well-known destination and schoolchildren thronged to see the massive picture he put in front of the house, it was Peller in all the glory of the paraphernalia of his magic. -Although he is the undisputed legend of magic in Nigeria, Professor Peller was said to be a devout Muslim who did not miss any of his Islamic obligations. Here is what his widow said in an interview with the Nigerian Compass in April 2012: “The Professor Peller you knew in public was not the same Eerson at home, especially whenever e was praying. On Fridays, all he enjoyed doing was praising God. He never missednis five daily prayers. Whenever he wanted to pray, he would just wear either an agbada or jalabia and nothing else. Whenever he was praying, he was always very serious, showing utmost piety. In fact, before he got married to me, he told me that he never observed his Subhi prayer at home; he would always go to the mosque wherever he was. At least, we livea together for about 27 years, and I don’t know of any day he missed his five daily prayers. “Oh, yes! If he was not praying, they wouldn’t kill him like that. Ask anybody, if he was not praying, he wouldn’t have been killed just like that. No, no!” She also said that Peller made a mistake when he revealed in an interview with journalists that the only time he was without any magic was when he was praying. His widow believe that his enemies exploited this. -An extremely confident man, Peller told the African Guardian (Guardian Magazines) in an interview in 1988, that ‘there is nothing like failure. I am the last of the world’s great magicians’. LEGACY Without a doubt, the late Peller popularized the art of magic in Nigeria and polished it to such an extent that not even his children have been able to duplicate. He unarguably remains Nigeria’s greatest magician. After conquering Nigeria with his conjuring skills, he went international and received global acclaim. Mention the name Peller and the next thing that comes to mind is magic. But when he died that fateful 2 nd of August, it seemed magic in Nigeria died with him. Will there arise another conjurer even far more impressive than Peller in the land? Time will tell. You love magic? Enjoy these! ABRACADABRA! The more you look…the less you see. Thanks a lot for your time. Cc:Lalasticlala http://naijarchives.com/professor-peller-the-enchanting-story-of-nigerias-most-famous-magician/

A 46- year-old mother of three, simply identified as Mrs. Ajibola, of No 4, Ajebamidele street, Ado Ekiti, has reportedly committed suicide. It was learnt that the sad event occurred around 6pm on Tuesday after “many unsuccessful attempts.” A neighbour said, “She had informed landlords in the area of her intention to address a world press conference slated for 6.30pm that fateful day. “It was when some of us arrived to listen to what she had to tell us that we discovered that she was no where to be found. “It was when we were searching for her that we saw her body hung from the roof in her house. “Many times, she had threatened to take her own life. There was even a time she said she would jump into the well and we had to announce to all landlords that they should make sure that their wells were well secured and covered to avoid any mishap.” Another neighbour said the deceased left no trace of suicide when she saw her on Tuesday morning describing her as gentle and jovial. She said, “Its unfortunate that we lost her but I think she had been sick for some time.” When our correspondent visited the deceased’s house at Ajebamidele, the bungalow was deserted and under lock and keys. One of the sympathisers said the corpse had been deposited in the morgue of Mary Assumpta Catholic Hospital, Ajilosun. At Ologede Police Station, at Ajebamidele, where the case was reported, a senior police officer referred our correspondent to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alberto Adebayo, for details. http://www.punchng.com/news/mother-of-three-commits-suicide-in-ekiti/ Cc:Lalasticlala |
Seventeen-year-old Beninoise woman, Abiodun Ojo, who killed her husband, Jimoh, in the Makoko area of Yaba, Lagos State, has said she poisoned her husband because she hated him. Abiodun, during an interview with PUNCH Metro, blamed her father for forcing her to marry Jimoh, who she said never took care of her. She said she had run away from the deceased three times, and was sent back by her father, who she described as the architect of her problem. PUNCH Metro had reported that Abiodun had been handed over to Jimoh as wife by her father to stop her from marrying her boyfriend. She was said to have given birth to a baby girl, Hannah, and was living with the victim in their home on Apolo Street, Makoko. However, she was said to have met her former boyfriend’s elder brother, Wensu, who allegedly gave her the poison to put in Jimoh’s drink so she could marry his younger brother. Our correspondent reported that Jimoh, a carpenter, who was retarded, had returned home from work on June 19, 2015 when his wife poured the poison into his soft drink and forced him to drink it. The deceased was said to have collapsed and died despite spirited efforts by residents to resuscitate him. Abiodun, who initially denied involvement in the crime, later confessed to community leaders, saying she was given the poison by her former boyfriend’s elder brother, Wensu. The two suspects were said to have been arrested by policemen from the Adekunle Police Division and were subsequently transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation. Abiodun said she never knew the poison would kill Jimoh. She said, “I was born in Lagos, though I am from Cotonou, Benin Republic. My father married two wives and he had nine children. My mother had six children for him and I am number four. I did not go to school because my father did not allow me. “I had a boyfriend, Papa, whom I dated for two years. I wanted to marry him, but my father refused because my elder sister was married to Papa’s brother. “I was at home one day when my father brought some people and said I should look at all of them and say if I liked them, and I said yes. He then asked me to go. It was the next day that they took me to Jimoh.” She said she was taken to a community in Ogun State, where the victim usually came to make love with her until she became pregnant. She said when she returned to Lagos, she was not well treated by the deceased and she complained to her family members, who asked her to endure the hardship. “On three different occasions, I ran away from home. But whenever I got home, my father would ask me to go back, saying marriage was always full of challenges. “On the fateful day, I went to the market to buy fish for my sister-in-law when I saw Wensu on the road. He gave me the poison and said I should put it in my husband’s drink. I put it in his drink and he took it himself,” she added. She said she regretted marrying the deceased because she never loved him. It was learnt that the boyfriend, Papa, had travelled back to the Benin Republic. His elder brother, Wensu, a herbalist, denied giving Abiodun the poison, saying she framed him up. He said, “I am a herbalist by profession and I was taught the job by my grandfather in the Benin Republic when I was a child. I met her sister in the community and we married legally. She had three kids for me. “But when I married another woman, she divorced me and married somebody else. I did not give her any poison and I have never met her husband, Jimoh, in my entire life. She is lying.” The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said the suspects would soon be charged to court. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/i-poisoned-my-husband-because-i-hated-him-─-beninoise-woman/ Cc:Lalasticlala

There was apprehension at a checkpoint near Maiduguri on Monday when a bomb went off as a suicide bomber was about to be apprehended, a member of the youth vigilante group, Yunus Idi, told our correspondent on the phone in Maiduguri. He said the suicide bomber, who was on his way to Maiduguri from either Mainok or Benesheik, died in the explosion that caused severe injuries on four other persons – two members of the youth vigilante group that tried to search him and two women that he was in the taxi cab with. Idi said the taxi driver was suspicious of a man that he had carried on the highway when he saw him with a strange object. He said that the suspicion made the driver to park at the checkpoint at Njimtilo near Maiduguri pretending to want to take time out to wee. He secretly told the youth vigilante at the checkpoint that he suspected one of the passengers to be carrying an object which might be a bomb. According to him, the vigilante immediately swung into action asking all the passengers out and this raised the suspicion of the suicide bomber who detonated the bomb on him so as not to be arrested. The bomb left him dead and four others injured, two female passengers and two members of the youth vigilante group. Idi, who said the incident occurred at about midday, revealed that the casualties could have been more but for the luck that it was only one out of the two explosives that exploded. |

security man, identified as Wasiu Okanlawon, has been stabbed to death by armed robbers in the Ile Zik, Ikeja area of Lagos. PUNCH Metro learnt that Wasiu, who was attacked last Friday at about 9pm, was killed while he and a female colleague were returning home from work. It was gathered that Okanlawon and the colleague, whose name had yet to be ascertained, were going in a commercial bus, when the bus had a flat tyre. The bus passengers were said to have alighted, while the driver tried to change the tyre. The robbers, whose number had yet to be identified, reportedly came out of hiding and attacked the stranded passengers. A colleague of the deceased, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity, said Okanlawon was stabbed to death when he prevailed on the robbers not to sexually harass his female colleague. He said, “He and the lady from our office were in the commercial bus going home. When they got to the Ile Zik Junction in Ikeja, the commercial bus had a flat tyre, and all the passengers alighted. “They stood by the roadside, while the driver changed the tyre. Suddenly, the robbers came out and began to rob the passengers of their possession. “They came with weapons and attacked them. Wasiu (Okanlawon), who was with his laptop, tried to escape from the area, but he noticed that they had descended on the lady, so he went back. It was then that the robbers collected his phones and the laptop, before stabbing him in the neck.” Our correspondent gathered that Okanlawon was rushed to a nearby hospital after the robbers had left, but he died on the way. “The control room of our security company was called. Okanlawon was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, but their efforts did not yield any result,” the source added. It was gathered that the matter was reported at the Ikeja Police Division, while Okanlawon’s corpse was dropped at the LASUTH’s morgue. It was learnt that Okanlawon, who had yet to marry, was planning his wedding for September 2015. A police source told our correspondent that although the deceased was a muslim, his burial was being delayed so that an autopsy to establish the cause of his death would be carried out. It was added that the female colleague had been invited by the police for questioning. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident. He added that investigation was ongoing on the matter. He said, “Investigations into the incident have commenced. “The police will soon apprehend the culprits.” Cc:Lalasticlala

The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has called for stiffer penalties for persons convicted of rape, defilement and other forms of child abuse to serve as a deterrent to others. He also urged the people of the state to stop giving alms to child beggars to discourage the rising trend of child beggars in the state. Oshiomhole, who spoke when he received members of the state chapter of International Federation of Women Lawyers who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, decried the rising cases of the menace in the state and the country which he described as “heinous crimes” that must be prosecuted diligently. He said, “We have discussed this, time and again at our Executive Council meetings. And at a point, we asked the Attorney-General to review the laws such that the number of years a convict gets will commensurate with the severe nature of rape and defilement. “We are concerned; we have discussed this and we have a feeling that the number of reported cases are on the increase. We also know that, because of the nature of our environment, there will be several others that may not even be reported at all. “When you look at the sheer number of rape cases that are recorded, it is clear that across the country both rape and defilement cases are increasing. Therefore, this calls for tougher measures on the part of those strengthening the law and providing for stiffer and harsher punishments than what is currently obtained and to also ensure that the few cases that are reported are properly prosecuted with a view to securing conviction.” The governor, however, noted that the state had recorded a high level of success in the fight against kidnapping and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that kidnappers were completely put out of business in the state. He also said that the state government was taking steps to discourage street begging. “I have directed the Commissioner for Women Affair to take firm measures to bring this incidence to an end; Edo cannot be a haven for beggars. We recognise the economic challenges but begging is not and will not be the solution and exposing children to begging is unhealthy. “I will even appeal to Edo people not to give alms to child beggars because it doesn’t help as women and their fathers push these children to the street. They use them in the manner they do, hoping they will attract pity. The more pity we show to those kids, the more they are subjected to these dehumanising practices,” Oshiomhole added. Earlier, the Chairperson of FIDA, Mrs. Stella Ojemen, said the organisation would continue to speak and protect women and children who suffer humiliation due the the violence meted out to them by the perpetrators. Ojemen said, “Our duties are simple – to ensure that women and children who are confronted with all kinds of issues are protected. We are disturbed by the incidence of child labour and trafficking of women in the state and with the plight of widows who are being disturbed by the families of the husband. “We are also worried about the maltreatment of women and children in crisis zones and we are really disturbed by all of these issues.” http://www.punchng.com/news/oshiomhole-seeks-stiffer-penalties-for-rapists/ Cc:Lalasticlala |

Nigeria: 12 Professors Jostle for VC's Seat At University of Ibadan No fewer than 12 Professors at the University of Ibadan are currently engaged in the succession battle for the position of the institution's Vice Chancellor as the 5-year tenure of the incumbent, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, winds down. Professor Adewole whose tenure lapses in November 2015 has been adjudged to have run a generally peaceful tenure noted for transformation and maintenance of industrial peace among unions on campus. Inside sources reveal that out of the 12 candidates jostling for the position, only Professor A. Adedeji is external to University of Ibadan. Others are Professors O.O Layiwola (Institute of African Studies), O.O Akinyinka (Pediatrics), F.O Egbokhare (Linguistics and African Languages), Arinola, O. Sanya (Physiotherapy ), B.O Fagbemi (Veterinary Microbiology and Parasitology), L. Popoola (Forest Resources Management), A.I Olayinka (Geology), A.I Oluleye (Industrial and Production Engineering), O.D Olaleye (Virology), A.E Falaye (Aquaculture and Fisheries Management) and A.A. Agbaje (Political Science). It was however gathered that two other persons joined the list having 'searched' despite not applying for the position but are considered 'fit' for the job. Meanwhile, all the aspiring candidates will soon interact with the university community under the platform of the 'University of Ibadan Community Forum 2015', in a move to ensure a democratic emergence of a new Vice Chancellor for the University. The Chairman of the 'University of Ibadan Community Forum 2015', Professor Nelson Fashina, stated that 'even though the forum does not have power as to who become the next Vice Chancellor, the interactive platform with the university community will enable the community listen to candidates and keep records of their plans or manifestoes of whoever emerges and be able to hold him/her accountable.' To this end, Professor Fashina said, all candidates have been invited for the interactive session. He explained that the forum was set up to give a level-playing ground to all contestants. Fashina said further: "We are a neutral and objective body seeking for the enthronement of truth, fair play and justice. All candidates therefore earn respect for their personal opinion, vision and mission, such that no one of them can be intimidated or harassed. All the candidates, both from within the UI and outside are given equal opportunities." "It is a forum that is meant to articulate the conjunction of positive interest in the direction of unity and harmony as necessary condition for further propagation of the academic excellence." "It is also for improved administrative achievements and the better welfare for all, both staff, students, families on the UI campus and for the interest of all our affiliate colleges and other functional interests, both nationally and internationally." |
President Muhammadu Buhari may extend his investigation into recent activities of some government agencies and departments to the Central Bank of Nigeria, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt. Buhari had while meeting state governors on June 23, stated that officials of the past government abandoned all financial and administrative instructions put in place in parastatals and agencies, therefore throwing the country into financial crisis. He also vowed at that meeting that funds stolen by government officials who abused their offices in the past would be recovered and systemic leakages stopped. A Presidency official on condition of anonymity told our correspondent on Saturday that the issue of alleged financial malpractices in the CBN featured prominently during the meeting Buhari had with the state governors. The source said in the course of reviewing activities of government agencies and parastatals under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan during the meeting, a state governor made reference to the CBN. He said the governor, who he refused to name, did not mince words in asking Buhari to ensure that he extends his investigation to the bank. He said, “I can tell you authoritatively that the issue of the CBN came up during the meeting the President had with state governors recently. “I remember vividly that one governor raised the issue and called on the President to extend ongoing probes to the CBN.” The official did not however disclose the President’s disposition to the submission made by the governor. When contacted, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said he had no information on the issue. Adesina, however, said the Buhari administration was committed to transparency and accountability in all sectors. The National Economic Council led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had on Monday launched a probe into the finances of the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission and the management of the Excess Crude Account under former President Goodluck Jonathan. The investigation to be carried out by four state governors is meant to unravel the sum of N3.8trillion allegedly not remitted to the Federation Account by the NNPC between 2012 and May 2015 as well as the sum of $2.1bn said to have been deducted from the ECA without approval. The four-man committee consists of the governors of Edo (Adams Oshiomhole); Gombe (Ibrahim Dankwabo); Kaduna (Nasir El-Rufai); and Akwa Ibom (Udom Emmanuel). They will be presenting their report to the NEC during its next sitting on July 23. Cc :Lalasticlala http://www.punchng.com/news/corruption-buhari-may-probe-cbn/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari has fired his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Abdulrahman Mani, for engaging in a supremacy battle with the Aide-de-Camp to the President, Lt.-Col. Lawal Abubakar. Our correspondent learnt on Saturday that his redeployment was one of the sweeping changes being carried out by the acting Director-General of the Department of State Service, Mr. Lawan Daura, on the order of the President. Buhari had appointed Daura to replace Mr. Ita Ekpeyong during the week at the peak of the crisis between the DSS and the military especially as it concerns the President’s protection. It would be recalled that Abubakar had earlier issued a memo redeploying DSS officials from 10 beats that they had hitherto been manning inside the Presidential Villa. He had explained that the decision to strip the DSS officials of their traditional roles was part of efforts to enhance general security within the villa. But in a rejoinder dated June 26, the former CSO directed the DSS officials to disregard the ADC’s order. Mani had argued that the duties being performed by DSS personnel in the Presidential Villa are backed by relevant statues and gazetted instruments. SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that Mani who was redeployed to Ebonyi State had since been replaced with Mr. Bashir Abubakar. Abubakar was said to be, until his new appointment, an Assistant Director in the Bayelsa State Command of the DSS. Also affected in the shake-up, it was learnt, is the Administrative Officer in the Presidential Villa Widi Liman. The AO who was earlier appointed by Buhari was said to have been redeployed to the Oyo State Command of the service. It was further learnt that the new DSS boss had also ordered the reversal of some promotions carried out in the service during the last days of the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Those who benefited from the exercise nationwide were said to have been allegedly promoted by the last administration for their loyalty. A source said about 30 out of the about 100 beneficiaries of the “arbitrary and undeserving promotion” were from the Presidential Villa. “The new DG is putting things right. More decisions may follow,” a source told our correspondent. The source however said a decision had not been taken on who will replace the AO. He also said a decision was still being awaited on the fate of the DSS bodyguards who served under Jonathan and were posted out en mass recently. President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday urged leaders of the All Progressives Congress to work hard to quickly resolve internal differences in the party. He said they must avoid disappointing Nigerians. A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, quoted the President as speaking while addressing members of the National Executive Committee of the APC in Abuja. Buhari warned that having won the battle of the last general elections, the APC now runs the risk of losing the “war” for party unity and internal cohesion. The President affirmed his belief in the supremacy of the APC’s Change Pact with Nigerians over the personal ambitions of its members. “As human beings, we are not perfect, but let us do our best to eventually win this ‘war’ so that we can get on with the urgent task of delivering on our electoral promises to the nation,” the statement quoted Buhari as saying. Tracing the history of the APC from pre-merger talks to electoral victory, the President urged APC members to put their personal ambitions aside and resolve their current differences for the good of the party and the nation. The APC Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, was said to have earlier told the gathering that President Buhari opted to attend the NEC meeting at the APC Secretariat, rather than host the parley at the Banquet Hall of the State House because he wanted to raise the spirit of party members with his presence at the secretariat. Odigie-Oyegun added that the party had focused its change agenda around President Buhari’s person during the campaign “because of his reputation and integrity.” “Your charisma facilitated what can be called a landslide victory at the Presidential election,” he told the President. http://www.punchng.com/news/lets-avoid-disappointing-nigerians-buhari-tells-apc-leaders/ Cc: Lalasticlala

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday sacked the Director General of the Department of State Service, Mr. Ita Ekpenyong. The Director of Communications in the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Haruna Imrana, announced the appointment of Mr. Lawal Musa Daura as the Acting DG of the DSS. The terse statement was issued by Imrana on behalf of the Head of Service, Mr. Danladi Kifasi. The statement said Daura was born in Daura on August 5,1953. The new Acting DG of DSS, who attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, from 1977 to 1980, started his career in the State Security Service in 1982 and rose to the rank of a director. He was at one time the Deputy Director, Presidential Communications, Command and Control Centre, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, between 2003 and 2007. Daura also served as State Director, Security Service, at various times for states like Kano, Sokoto, Edo, Lagos, Osun and Imo. He attended various professional courses, both at home and abroad, including the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru. It will be recalled that there was a running battle between the DSS and the All Progressives Congress before the 2015 general elections. The DSS had in January said that it had uncovered lists containing names and photographs of security personnel, foreigners and under-aged children on the registered members’ list of the APC. The spokesperson of SSS, Marilyn Ogar, at a news conference in Abuja, had said that a video with a tutorial for hacking was also uncovered when the service raided a building in Lagos. But the then opposition party had dismissed the allegation as hogwash. The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had stated, “We have always warned that our democracy is in clear and present danger, not just from desperate politicians, but also from institutions of state that have compromised in their roles and resorted to crass lawlessness. The DSS’ ‘findings’ today have given us another reason to repeat this warning.” Meanwhile, President Buhari is set to sack the service chiefs, The PUNCH has learnt. Presidency sources told one of our correspondents that all the service chiefs would be relieved of their appointments before the end of the month. The service chiefs are the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Alex Badeh; Chief of Army Staff, Major General Kenneth Minimah; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Adesola Amosu. It was gathered that the President was considering leaving out the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase. http://www.punchng.com/news/buhari-sacks-dg-dss-service-chiefs-may-go/ |
