UCH IBADAN is simply the best cos patients from other Teaching hospitals are being transferred to UCH for medical care when they can't handle them. But from UCH straight to India or any Good country. #tongueOut |

Life in UI’s Alexander Brown Hall Alexander Brown Hall (ABH) at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, a 10 minutes drive from the main campus of the University of Ibadan, serves as home to UI medical, dental and physiotherapy students. While physiotherapy students spend two years in the hostel, medical and dental students spend at least 40 months with just two weeks holiday which comes about seven months to graduation. The students spend the first three years of their training inside the UI main campus. Medical students are found in all undergraduates’ halls of residence but the prayer point of every pre-clinical student is to pass the second MB examination and "cross over" to ABH. Inhabitants of the hall are called ‘Brownites’ and the most junior would be in 400 level. ABH is like the Promised Land to an average UI medical student. Movement into the hall is usually associated with fanfare and excitement. The hall is quite unique and life there is different from what is obtainable in other halls. In ABH, DSTV, HiTV and CTL are connected to all rooms unlike in other halls where they are only connected in the TV Room. There are six blocks, three each for the males and females. There is no restriction of movement for Brownites within the hall at any time of the day (and there is no unusual coupling too!) Two students live in a room. Within the hall, there is a five-aside football pitch, basketball, volleyball as well as badminton courts. There are also two table tennis boards, a snooker and computer game playing centre known as Arema. Brownites play the games, including chess and scrabble. During weekdays, most Brownites are busy. Everyone goes to the hospital for their daily activities and most are fagged out by the time they are back. Clinical students rotate through the departments in the hospital and their schedule is determined by the department in which one is at any particular time. However, Surgery and Paediatrics are usually the most tasking. In the evenings, various organisations or fellowships usually have their meetings. However, weekends are more interesting, especially for the sport-loving Brownites. Friday evenings and Saturday mornings are usually for the ABH 5-aside Football League where seven students-owned clubs compete for trophies in basketball and volleyball. Saturday afternoons/ evenings and Sundays are for the English Premiership and Spanish La Liga matches. English Premiership has more fans than other world leagues. The Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea fans always engage themselves in hot arguments, depending on the performance of their teams in the premiership, FA Cup and Champions League. The local ABH clubs also have their fans. FC Lazario has the highest number of fans. The others are FC Hupernikao, True Blues, Leon FC, FC Shining, Bendel Insurance and FC Maximum. Equally in ABH, there are many students’ organisations focused on areas of interest. They include Hamstrings Club for socials and philanthropy, The Forum for development of leadership and public speaking skills; Sport Aficionados for the sports enthusiasts; 7Q7 for the poets; Sinfonia Choir for the singers and Play House for drama. There is also Action Group on Adolescent Health (AGAH) for advocacy against diseases affecting the reproductive tract. Each of these organisations holds programmes at least once in a year. This is besides the bigger organisations, such as the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA), UNIBADAN Association of Dental Students (UADS) and the Association of Physiotherapy Students (APS). Meanwhile, only about 20 per cent of Brownites are actively involved in organising the activities of the organisations. Same set of people run the organisations as one could belong to any three of them and be an executive member in two or even three. Socially, ABH is a "dull" hall compared to others in UI. Brownites leave the hall on Friday nights to clubs or joints because UI banned the sale of alcoholic drinks in its halls of residence. Usually, variety nights during hall or departmental weeks are the only opportunities for those who don’t like to go out to relax. Each of the clubs holds a variety night once a year. Politically, ABH can boast of student- politicians who are active locally, nationally and internationally. Brownites hold executive posts in the Students Transition Caretaker, NiMSA, FAMSA, JCI, ANUNSA, Rotaract Club, HAPPY Club, UCJ, etc. However, majority have little or no interest in politics. Seniority, religious affiliation and relationship with others usually influence the outcome of elections in ABH. Politics of "beef" and character assassination is also very pronounced and usually used against the more popular candidates. On the other hand, there are many religious leaders in ABH. Each class boasts of not less than five pastors of major fellowships in UI/UCH. There also exists the Prince of Dawa, alfas and students’ imams in the hall. Academically, Brownites are very sound. No doubt, with due respect to other universities, UI has the best medical college in Nigeria (but this does not in any way suggest that our colleagues in other schools are inferior). Brownites have won the first four editions of the Emeritus Professor Akinkugbe’s Biennial Quiz competition in which at least 16 medical schools participate. UNN would host the next edition. The driest and dullest moments in the hall are during examinations. Every Brownite writes an end-of-posting examination at least once in every two months but the major MBBS examination comes once a year. During such periods, "all man de humble". What about relationships? An average male Brownite prefers to date a non- medical student. This is probably because the female medics are usually as busy as the males and may not be free when the guy would need her. Same also goes for the lady Brownites. There are just few couples in ABH. You can also get lots of male and female virgins just as there are sexually active ones. UI girls do feel proud to have a boyfriend in ABH and some Brownites take advantage of that to have as many as possible. Don’t ask me if "yawah dey gas" when the ladies find out. On cultism, there are no identifiable cult members in ABH, besides there is zero cult activity among Brownites. To put it mildly, ABH is the most comfortable undergraduate hostel to live in Nigeria. Two-man room, no squatters, complete with DSTV? That’s unbeatable. Sports wise? Unbeatable. Politics wise? Vibrant. Ah ah … socially? We call for help! www.twitter.com/ishow_dot |

Holamarncy:well dts ur say on that...... but having spent 3yrs in UI i cn categorically tell u dt Chemistry students usually cross to mbbs |
Pr0ton:Nice one!!! Well said..... Lemme say Crossing in UI is usually based on merit if u deserve it. The higher ur Cgpa @d end of d session,d higher ur chances of crossing over to medicine.Courses like dentistry nd physiotherapy r not allowed to cross cos dy r also professional courses. Basic medical science courses like Physiology &Biochemistry usually av d highest chances of crossing nd same apply to human nutrition, chemistry. Even MLS i doubt if dy also allow dem cross. In all one need to be Prayerful nd leave everything in God's hand |
