Crime › Police Officer, DSS Operative In Free For All At Bauchi Emir’s Palace by Islie(op): 10:46pm On Oct 17, 2017 |
FROM: PAUL ORUDE, BAUCHI
The courtesy call by the Northern Governors Wives Forum (NGWF) on the Emir of Bauchi Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, on Tuesday, was almost marred by a clash between a top police officer and an official of the Department of State Security (DSS) at the emir’s palace.
It was gathered that a fierce fight broke out between an Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP (names withheld) with the Bauchi State command and an official of the DSS attached to wife of the Governor of Nasarawa State, Hajia Hajiya Mairo Al-makura.
Daily Sun learnt that the ugly fight took place inside the the Emir’s palace when the Emir was already seated and receiving his guests.
The governors’ wives, who were at the palace on a courtesy call on the monarch, were from Kogi, Borno, Gombe, Sokoto, Nassarawa, Niger, Zamfara, Bauchi and Kebbi states.
The governors’ wives were led on the visit to the traditional ruler by the newly elected Chairperson of the NGWF and wife of the Bauchi State Governor, Hajia Hadiza Mohammed in company with nine northern governors’ wives.
Hajia Abubakar, who was elected at the Yankari Games Reserves and Resort, on Monday, during the forum’s meeting, took over the rein of leadership of the NGWF from wife of the Zamfara State Governor Asma’u Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the fight started when the DSS operative allegedly demanded that the vehicle of the Bauchi State Governor’s wife be parked properly away from where Al-makura’s wife’s vehicle was already parked.
The police officer, who was in his uniform, was reported to have been infuriated by the command coming from the plain-clothed security official and allegedly shouted on the DSS man. The DSS official was said to have been provoked with the outburst of the police officer and, in turn, rained abuse on the policeman.
“The AC (police officer) didn’t take kindly to the insult and gave the DSS man a dirty slap. The DSS man retaliated and they started fighting each other,” the witness said.
According to the witness, some policemen believed to be the AC subordinates joined the scuffle, beating the DSS man almost to a pulp.
A senior police officer was reported to have immediately taken away the pistol belonging to the police officer in order to prevent any accidental gunshot.
“The fight was getting out of hand and there was confusion every,2 said the witnessed.“
Luckily, men of the NSCDC on ground, intervened and separated the fighting policeman and the DSS before causing further breakdown of law and order.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Kamal Mohammed Datti, did not succeed several calls made to his mobile phone were not returned while he also did not reply to a text sent to his phone number.
Hadiza Abubakar told the monarch that the north was left behind in education, health and other economic activities and called for support from traditional rulers and the government to continue their quota to address the backwardness of the region.
She lamented that drug abuse was ravaging youth of the region saying that spouses of governors on their own have initiated programmes aimed at tackling the menace of drug abuse.
The NGWF Chairperson then appealed to traditional institutions to support the forum in their efforts to assist women and children.
She said: “We discussed yesterday (Monday October 16) on the way forward particular for the girl child education among other issues of women, children, youth and how to support our husbands to achieve their mandate to the people”.
In his response, Dr Rilwanu Adamu appreciated the wives of the governor for their supportive role in uniting northern Nigeria. http://sunnewsonline.com/police-officer-dss-operative-in-free-for-all-at-bauchi-emirs-palace/lalasticlala |

Crime › Love Portion: Native Doctor Jailed For Duping 72-year Old Woman (pic) by Islie(op): 4:55pm On Oct 17, 2017 |

A 50-year old retired Customs officer turned native doctor, Akin Babalola, has been convicted and handed two years imprisonment without an option of fine for defrauding a 72-year old woman, Mrs Dinah Grace over ‘love portion’.
The convict had alleged that the victim paid him N500,000 to prepare ‘love portion’ in order to win back her estranged husband after they had separated for some years.
However, the presiding Magistrate, Mrs J.O.E Adeyemi found his claim spurious, declared him guilty of fraud and sentenced him accordingly.
The Osun State-born Akin Babalola allegedly obtained N500,000 from Dinah Grace under the false pretence of preparing the love potion for her.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that instead of Babalola keeping his own part of the bargain, he allegedly duped the septuagenarian. He claimed that he could not prepare such as it might cause the death of her estranged husband.
The convicted Babalola was then arrested two years ago and charged before Ejigbo Magistrates court for the alleged offence, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.
The trial dragged on for over two years before the court gave the final judgment and found Babalola guilty.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that during the trial, Dinah who was separated from her husband after many children, denied that she asked Babalola to prepare ‘love portion’ for her as he had claimed and insisted that she was merely duped under false pretence.
On his part, Babalola claimed that he specialised in preparing love medicine and could solve other spiritual problems. Most of his clients were those who had broken homes and marriages which he reportedly used his spiritual powers to restore back.
However, trouble started after Dinah asked Babalola to refund her money since he did not fulfill their agreement but Babalola refused. He threatened to expose her if she asked for the money again.
She went to Igando Police Division and reported that Babalola defrauded her under false pretence. Babalola was arrested and taken to the station where he told the police that he collected the money and did not continue with their initial agreement because it involved human life.
The police charged Babalola to court on a three-count charge of felony, obtaining under false pretence and stealing. During the trial, the prosecutor, Supol Kenneth Asibor proved before the court that Babalola was guilty of the criminal offences as charged by the police. The court upheld the charges and jailed Babalola accordingly. http://pmexpressng.com/native-doctor-jailed-duping-72-year-old-woman/lalasticlala |
Crime › 12 ‘corporate’ Sex Workers Arrested In Abuja by Islie(op): 4:41pm On Oct 16, 2017 |
Posted by Caleb Onwe
Officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have arrested 12 ladies described as “corporate sex workers:. The suspects were arrested at an apartment on Bukaba Street at Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, where high profile ‘corporate’ sex workers operate in the high brow area of the city centre to allegedly service top politicians and other high profile clients.
The invasion of the hideout was part of relentless war by government agencies to rid the nation’s capital, especially the city centre, of sex workers. It was learnt the landlord of the property discovered that a self-contained room in the com- Lalong pound let out to a single lady had suddenly become an abode for about a dozen ladies whose conducts were suspicious.
The landlord reportedly informed the FCTA which deployed officials of the Social Development Secretariat (SDS) to the apartment. However, in a dramatic twist, all the suspected commercial sex workers were released unconditionally a few hours after their arrest.
The Acting Director, SDS, Mrs. Felicia Nwogu, said the suspected commercial sex workers were arrested following a complaint from the owner of the property.
She said: “We arrested 12 of them, but you know we cannot keep them for more than 72 hours, so when the human rights people came, we had to let them go, when they promised to move out of the house.
“When we were leaving the area after apprehending them, the residents around were thanking us, saying ‘we can now have peace in this neighbourhood and sleep well. You people have done well.’”
However, when our correspondent visited the street one of the residents punctured SDS’s reason for releasing the suspected sex workers.
The man said the sex workers were being maintained by top politicians and military officers. According to him, a poor sex worker cannot afford to pay rent at that street where self-contained room goes for between N500,000 and N700,000.
He said: “SDS officials were forced to release the girls. In fact, before they could leave the place, calls from above had started coming, warning the task force team to let the girls go.” https://newtelegraphonline.com/2017/10/12-corporate-sex-workers-arrested-abuja/lalasticlala |

Business › Danbatta: Why Bankers Won’t Disclose Fraudsters by Islie(op): 7:56pm On Oct 15, 2017 |
By Dan Atori Minna
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that there has been an increase in banking fraud in the nation more than what banks are willing to disclose. Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Professor Umaru Garba Danbatta said this yesterday in Minna while presenting a paper titled ‘Promoting Regulatory Framework for Safety and Security on the Internet’ at the North Central Zonal Internet Governance Forum.
According to him: “Banks are unwilling to discuss the fraud that happens within the banks due to the fear of liquidation and loss of customers.
“The banks do not report a lot of fraud because of liquidation problems. They are scared that their customers will leave if they report such incidences, these banks feel that the customers will not have confidence in them anymore.”
Danbatta also said that the non-disclosure by the banks is militating against the statistics towards ensuring cyber security, pointing out that it is only collaboration and cooperation between private and public organisations to help build the capacity of cyber security policies across the nation.
In her address, the Chairperson of the Forum, Mrs. Mary Uduma argued the need for adequate sensitisation to be done about cyber security and dangerous speeches.
The Coordinator of the Hate Speech Project, Isah Garba, said that its monitoring project revealed that the nation recorded 6,258 hate speeches in 2016. He said that out of the hate speeches, 2,603 were of religious content, 421 were political, 2,449 were of ethnicity, 283 Biafra, 134 about herdsmen, 118 on bye elections while the others were of general content. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2017/10/danbatta-bankers-wont-disclose-fraudsters/lalasticlala |

Politics › Over N30 Billion Recovered Through Tips From Whistle Blowers – EFCC by Islie(op): 9:57pm On Oct 12, 2017 |
Posted by Ebuka Onyeji,
The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Ibrahim Magu, says more than N30 billion looted funds have been recovered since the commencement of the whistle blowing policy. “Since the commencement of the whistle-blower policy, we have received hundreds of actionable tips that led to the following cash recoveries: N527, 643,500; $53,222,747; GBP 21,222,890 and Euro 547,730,” Mr. Magu said on Thursday at the launch of the whistle-blower support project.
Tagged ‘Corruption Anonymous’ (CORA), the project is being organised by the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy, AFRICMIL, in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation.
In a speech at the event, Mr. Magu said the EFCC has created an environment for those with information to approach the Commission, confident that the information they give would be put into effective use.
Thursday’s speech comes about two months after Mr. Magu some of the tip-offs passed to anti-graft detectives by whistle blowers were leading nowhere. The EFCC chief, however, explained his stance at the event.
“I am glad to report that Nigerians have so far been very responsive. We have always treated every tip referred to us with strict sense of responsibility bearing in mind that such undertaking on the part of the whistle-blower is usually a matter of trust and even risk.
“At the same time, we have been careful not to be used by mischief makers who would want to abuse this process.
“Let me reiterate that just as there is consequence for corruption, there will be consequence for those who want to take advantage of this noble initiative in the fight against corruption to create mischief. We have responded to this possibility by developing a water-tight mechanism of both reporting and cross-checking information.”
He commended the initiators of the project, adding that “through this window, we have seen many Nigerians whose motivation was not just to benefit from the recoveries, as promised by the federal government, but the satisfaction of having to see that what was ill-gotten has been recovered for the good of all.
“Those in this category were motivated by their sense of justice and overriding national interest, not the financial reward. We urge more Nigerians to borrow a leaf from these patriotic individuals.
“President Muhammadu Buhari during his October 1 national broadcast highlighted the Whistle-Blower Policy as one of the administration’s new institutional reforms to eradicate corruption in Nigeria,” Mr. Magu said.
In his speech, Chido Onumah, Co-ordinator of AFRICMIL, said the anti-graft war has recorded a huge success through the whistle blowing policy.
Mr. Onumah said going by figures from the Presidential advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, 2,150 tips had been received by the Ministry of Finance. Despite the success recorded, Mr. Onumah said the policy still lacks proper awareness among Nigerians.
“Take a walk around town and ask Nigerians, chances are that nine out of ten would not have heard about the policy much less have any idea of how to submit tips.
“The second thing is the glaring absence of commitment to the safety and protection of whistle blowers. Most of those who are reported are often left to walk free and never invited for questioning, much less suspended from office as the public service rules recommended.”
While urging Nigerians to key into the whistle blowing policy, he said the CORA project is geared towards creating awareness and ensuring maximum protection for whistle blowers.
President Buhari announced the policy in December 2016. It encourages citizens to inform law enforcement authorities about suspicious activities of public treasury looters.
A maximum five per cent of the recovered sum was earmarked as reward for the whistle blower as part of the policy. In June, government announced payouts of N375.8 million to 20 whistle blowers. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/245933-n30-billion-recovered-tips-whistle-blowers-efcc.htmllalasticlala |

Crime › Police Foil Evans Plan To Escape From Prison by Islie(op): 10:12pm On Oct 09, 2017 |
The police have foiled plans by the arrested billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans to escape from prison.
Evans is currently standing trial before an Ikeja High Court for alleged conspiracy and kidnapping alongside five others namely Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba.
They are being remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons, Apapa.
Following his attempt to escape, The Nation reports that the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) has formed a heavy security ring around the kidnapping kngpin.
Evans who was arrested in June this year, allegedly planned to give between $50,000 and $100,000 to one of the guards manning his cell to facilitate his escape.
A police source said Evans was allegedly coordinating his escape bid with some members of his gang by telephone which he obtained through “suspicious” means.
“When Evans was in our custody, he tried to escape but we were able to abort all his plans. We discovered that he had access to phones which were hidden in the middle of loaves of bread, eba, semovita and so on.
He was making calls from these smuggled phones in the middle of the night, making arrangements with some yet to be identified members of his gang to arrange for his escape. We intercepted how he was luring one of the guards with about $50,000 to $100,000. He wanted an insider to serve as informant to him and members of his gang.” https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2017/10/09/police-foil-evans-plan-escape-prison/https://17350-presscdn-0-16-pagely.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/15963.jpg |
Sports › Brown Ideye In N167.5m Child Support Mess by Islie(op): 12:17pm On Oct 08, 2017 |
6-year-old boy sad for abandonment By Ikenna Emewu
https://www.sunnewsonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/OG-300x271.jpg
Super Eagles player, Brown Ideye faces a tough match that he would only play safe and reasonable to win.
It’s a match that would cost him N167.5m, win or lose. However, the arena for the game is in the home, which makes it complicated for him to handle.
This involves a child paternity duel he is engrossed in in Switzerland, and this matter arose from a goal he scored against himself with a lady he once dated in the city of Neuchatel, Switzerland, where he once played.
Friday afternoon, a lady called with +4179*****84 who identified herself as Francesca Erroi and from Neuchatel, Switzerland.
She narrated in chocking and hushed voice how she had affairs with Ideye when she worked as secretary of the club Ideye played. The affair was fertile enough and resulted in a baby boy.
But as the baby arrived, Ideye allegedly exonerated himself of every duty of paternal care.
Francesca waited for a change of heart from Ideye until the boy was three that she had the only option of going to court to force him do the needful and live up to his responsibility.
On October 14, 2014, a Swiss court gave a judgment that ordered Ideye to pay Francesca 216,000 Swiss Francs or $225,000, some N36m at the prevailing rate then as retroactive child support sum.
Disregard for court order
She said a copy of the judgment was served Ideye when he was already a player with the English side, West Bromwich Albion. While she is sure Ideye was served, he never communicated with her or the child and also didn’t appeal or obey the court order till today.
The court also ordered that Ideye pays his lady 6,000 Francs or some $6,500 monthly upkeep allowance for the child.
Today, the child is six years old and Francesca claimed that Ideye never paid a dime either as the judgment lump sum or the monthly upkeep as ordered by court. From three years ago, the judgment was handed down, the monthly upkeep would be some $234,000 as at today. In addition to the lump sum retroactive child support debt, Ideye should be liable to a princely sum of N167,535,000 owed his little boy for his upkeep.
On November 16, 2014, The Local, a local newspaper at the time of the judgment reported it this way:
Swiss media report
A Swiss court has ordered Nigerian football star Ideye Brown to pay his former partner, a resident of Neuchâtel, 216,000 francs ($225,000) (N82,125,000) (N36m) in retroactive child support, in addition to future monthly payments of 6,000 francs, (234,000) a media report says.
Brown, 26, a forward with English Premier League team West Bromwich Albion, played for the Neuchâtel Xamax team from 2008 to 2010, where he began a relationship with a secretary at the club, the local newspapers L’Express and L’Impartial reported.
The relationship continued after the footballer was transferred to Sochaux-Montbéliard, a second division French team, with his partner making regular trips to see him in France.
However, after she became pregnant, Brown broke off ties with the woman, who gave birth to a baby boy in January 2011.
Brown rejected paternal responsibility but after three years of legal procedures, the boy’s mother gained a decision from a civil court, which on Friday ruled Brown is the child’s father, the newspapers reported.
The court declared that the woman had the sole right to care for the child while ordering the footballer to cough up the parental support.
Under the ruling, the payments for the child are to increase to 7,000 francs a month when he turns six and 8,000 francs a month when he is 12, payable until his studies are finished.
Brown, who reportedly did not appear before the court, has 30 days to decide whether to appeal the decision.” (thelocal.ch)
Her petition
To buttress her claims, Francesca sent Sunday Sun a mail, which is actually a petition she said, she had prepared to forward to Nigerian authorities, through the Nigerian Embassy in Switzerland she wrote on October 6, the day she called.
The letter, she also forwarded in handwritten copy is reproduced below
Neuchâtel 6 October 2017
To Nigerian authorities
Dear Sir, Dear Madam,
I am Francesca and I am the mother of 6 years old boy who is son to Ideye Aide Brown, the Super Eagles football team player.
Here is the Neuchâtel court judgment which clearly says that Mr. Ideye is the father of my son, and sentences Mr. Ideye to pay monthly maintenance to my son.
Despite this court decision of October 2014, that Mr. Ideye got when he was in England and which he didn’t appeal, and by implication accepted, after three years, he is still doing nothing for his son.
It’s shameful that a personality that represents Nigeria all over the world doesn’t respect a court decision and abandons his own blood.
Is this the image that Nigeria wants to give about Nigerians all around the world?
Nobody is above the law.
As Mr. Ideye seems not to understand the importance of a court decision, I formally request Nigerian authorities to intervene and compel Mr. Ideye order to respect the sentence of the court and respect his obligations as father to his son.
I remain willing at the disposal of the Nigerian authorities through their embassy in Switzerland.
Thank you for your attention.
Kind regards
Francesca
My son is sad
Francesca also sent three photos she snapped with Ideye to prove her point and they were taken on November 14, 2009 at 01:48am from the automatic date imprint on it.
Later in the discussion, she became emotional when asked the last time Ideye called and or spoke with her or his son. She said: “Ideye never for once spoke with his son. I had the baby in January 2011, and four months later, in May I got his phone number from someone and called to speak with him,
“He just told me that he wishes me and my son success and that he has nothing to do with the boy and not ready to pay any bills for his care and upkeep.
“The most painful is that my son keeps crying asking what he did to his father that he doesn’t want to ask of him or even speak with him. I am really sad and confused because I don’t know an answer to give my son about all the questions. I just wish Brown would be man and responsible enough to take care of his son, call him and assure him he didn’t abandon him and make him know he really has a father.” http://sunnewsonline.com/own-goal-super-eagles-ideye-in-n167-5m-child-support-mess/lalasticlala |

RRS recovers 6 stolen cars from syndicate By CHIOMA IGBOKWE
https://www.sunnewsonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/SUPECT-300x126.jpg
Operatives of the Lagos special security outfit, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), have cracked an armed robbery syndicate, which allegedly operates from Kirikiri prison. The leaders of the syndicate, Odudu Uttah, Sunday and Tosin who are awaiting trial were found with list of targets in Lagos who their members had attacked and still planning to attack.
Their gang members who were arrested include Nsima Uttah, the younger brother of Odudu Uttah; Abayomi James, Omokaro Efe, Augustine Uchenna, Chukwuma Onyemara, Uzuazomaro Joseph, Melvin Umeh, Ahmed Waheed and Odili Benedict. On their arrest, a police source told Saturday Sun that victims alerted operatives of RRS about the activities of some hoodlums in Ayobo area in Lagos state.
“On August 25, we got reports from victims that their houses were broken into by suspected armed robbers. The suspects raided their houses and left with valuables including cars. Through intelligence gathering, we were able to trace some of the suspects and discovered that the cars were already in Anambra State.
“The Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, thereafter instructed that our men should trace and recover the cars. A tracking team was sent to Anambra and they were able to recover the cars from the buyers.
“Nine suspects who include three buyers were arrested. In the course of investigation, it was discovered that most of the crimes committed were coordinated from Kirikiri prison. As such, we were able to intercept their plan to raid more homes. The police authority has written to Nigerian Prisons to facilitate the process of bringing out the inmates for further investigation”, a police source disclosed.
Victims recount
Mr. Dada who was one of their victims told the police that the robbers gained access into his house at about 2am on August 25, 2017. “They were the ones who woke me up as I did not hear while they were breaking in. They were armed and started beating me up. They requested for money and I told them I don’t have any. They searched the whole house and collected all our phones, cloths, jewelries, laptops, Television sets and other valuables. They packed them in my car and waited till 5am before they left.”
Another victim simply identified as Bamidele told the police that the armed robbers invaded his house on September 9, 2017. “They broke my burglary proof and entered the house around 1.45am. Before I could pick my phone to make a call, they have overpowered and tied me up. They took all the valuables within reach and drove off with my Toyota Camry car. ”
Suspects confess
At the police station, the suspects admitted to have participated in several robberies especially in Ayobo area. They alleged that their leaders who are inmates in prison, awaiting trial, gave the addresses of their victims to them.
One of the suspects, Nsima 33, told the police that his journey into the criminal world dates back to 2013 after observing the lifestyle of his elder brother, Odudu. “I used to be a bus driver but I realized that my brother was making so much money and yet no one knows what he does for a living. All I knew back then was that he travels a lot, so I assumed he could be a fraudster.
It was when the police arrested him that I knew what exactly he was doing. One of his friends, Shokunbi who is also an armed robber asked me to raise money and help my brother. I told him that I don’t make much money so he taught me how to break shops.
“The little money we raised was sent to my brother who is in prison. When I saw him, he told me to promise that I will continue my driving job.
The temptation was too much, so I continued breaking shops at Ajegunle and snatching bags with the guidance of Shokunbi and his gang. After about a year, my brother was granted bail and he went back to the same crime. Shokunbi told him that I am good, so he had no choice but to allow me join them.
“Unfortunately, he was arrested again at Ayobo when the people in the area alerted the police that he was back and still committing crime. Odudu was offended, so he made a list of all the people whom he suspected reported him to the police and we started robbing them one after the other.”
On how they operate, Nsima said that they normally broke into homes through the windows. “We normally remove the burglary proof through the window of the sitting room. Our targets in Ayobo are those with cars. Cars are the only valuables you can get in an average man’s house. When we enter the house, we will wait till it’s morning time, about 5am before we drive out like every normal person. While we are waiting, we will eat good food if there is any in the fridge. We will also tie up the people in the house and take all their phones.
“All the cars that we got were sold between N150, 000 and N300, 000 to one Umeh who is based in Anambra. It was my brother who normally calls him from prison anytime there is a product (stolen car) for sale.”
He also told the police that there are other two houses marked for robbery in Ayobo before police arrested them. “Odudu asked us to target a man who owns a big Toyota car popularly called muscle because it can be sold for as high as N400, 000. His lawyer needed that money in order to get him on bail. We were planning to operate when policemen arrested us.”
Another suspect, Abayomi James, alleged that there are two other persons in prison who normally suggested who and who to attack. “We are loyal to them because they are the ones who taught us robbery and have access to guns. Most importantly, we have to obey them so that if police arrest and send us to prison, they will protect us over there. I normally get my own instruction from Sunday and Tosin. Part of the money we get from selling cars is usually used to pay their lawyers.”
Another suspect, Omokaro told the police that he was the one responsible for buying all the guns used during all their robbery operations. “I am a private security man with Oando and they pay me N25, 000 a month. It is too small for a married man who is 48 years old. It is not even enough to pay for house rent. I have links with people that sell guns that was why I volunteered.”
Yet another suspect, Shokunbi, told the police that he is awaiting trial and was released on bail after spending 18 months in prison. “Once they release you from prison, you don’t need to go to court again. They will not even look for you because we were told by our lawyers that once they release you on bail, you are free. I have known Odudu for many years and we were arrested and released the same time. Unfortunately, he was arrested again by the police.”
One of the buyers of the stolen cars, Melvin admitted to the police that he knew the cars were stolen. “Odudu called me from the prison that his boys will contact me with some cars. I knew that they were stolen that is why I pay them N150, 000 per car. Whenever they call me I will travel to Lagos from Onitsha to pick them (stolen cars) up.”
Yet another buyer, Ahmed Waheed said that his own role is to buy the other valuables like Plasma TV, jewelries, phones and cloths. “I normally give them N10, 000 for 42inch Plasma TV.” http://sunnewsonline.com/prison-lords-even-as-kirikiri-inmates-they-coordinate-robberies-in-lagos/lalasticlala |
Family › Benue Woman Marries Pregnant Lady To Bear Children For Late Son by Islie(op): 1:27am On Oct 07, 2017 |
She’s done nothing wrong – Lawyer, village head From LINUS OOTA, Lafia
https://www.sunnewsonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/LADY-300x188.jpg
Mrs. Mary Torkwase Antom, 58, from Tse Baraku in Kwande LGA of Benue State, is probably the happiest woman on earth. Reason: her dream to immortalise her husband and son’s names has been fulfilled, thanks to what she considers the wise decision she took after the death of both her son and husband.
A 1986 diploma holder in Catering and Hotel Management from Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, she worked as a caterer at the prestigious NICON-NOGA hotels in Abuja, between 1988 and 2001, before resigning, to set up a booming restaurant business on Makurdi Road in Lafia.
How she lost husband and son
Formerly married to Mr. Patrick Terlumum Antom from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and a retiree of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture (they got wedded in 1980), the union was blessed with only one child, Thomas Awuhe Antom. Born on June 13, 1990, the boy was in SS2 when he died in 2004, from a heart-related sickness. A year later, his father, Patrick, also died.
That left the woman devastated. “Growing old is tough, but growing old without the support and company people close to you is tougher,” she told Saturday Sun . Add to that the fact she is diabetic and you begin to understand why she feels that life can never be tougher than she had seen and may climb to “toughest” if she does not do something drastic to secure not only the family name but also its property.
“I had lived a happy life with my late husband,” she explained. “We shared ideas and always kept our resources in one account. We achieved a lot during his lifetime, we had very good plans for our only son, but God took him away. To worsen matters, my husband also died. We have a lot of landed property; we equally have business establishments.”
Her worry
Mrs. Antom popularly known as ‘Hajia Mary,’ said: “My worry is, when I die, who will take over this property? My husband had, while on sick bed, warned me seriously not to allow any of his relations to benefit from the property that both of us had laboured strenuously to acquire. He was not in good terms with them before he died.”
She was in a dilemma about how to solve the problem she was confronted with when a friend told her about a pretty young unmarried lady, one Miss Juliet Muese, from Obi LGA who was on the verge of being disowned by her parents for her inability to identify the guy responsible after becoming pregnant out of wedlock. All of the three men she mentioned, one of whom is Igbo, denied ever knowing her and even threatened to arrest her with the police for trying to defame them.
Strange marriage
On learning about the incident, Mrs. Antom became determined to seek Juliet’s hand in marriage for her dead son, in keeping with Tiv tradition. She travelled to Obi, met with and held a close and lengthy discussion with members of Juliet’s family on that score. The idea was to bring her into her home with high hope that she might deliver a baby boy who would later inherit their property. With the parents of Juliet readily agreeing to the marriage proposal after the long talks, Mrs. Antom repeated the visit accompanied by some elders from her husband’s village to perform the traditional marriage rites that would formally seal the deal.
“What I did is a well-known practice in our place and culture,” she said in defence. “There are a lot of children, almost 18 per cent of them born after their father’s death. Majority of them lost their fathers before they were born, it is not a new thing, such cases are everywhere in our place.
These children answer their father’s name, some of them have even won local elections; they are grown-up people today and nobody has said anything; they have gotten their dues in our community, so my case is not an exception; all I need is a grandchild and a bona fide inheritor of my property.”
The marriage that took place in 2007 has produced two boys with the third child on the way, although it is difficult at this stage to say whether it is going to be a boy or a girl. To start with, Juliet was delivered of a baby boy on December 1 of the same year. She became pregnant again and was delivered of another baby boy in March 2011. Right now, she is three-months pregnant for her third child.
Mrs. Antom who is excited about the development told Saturday Sun that her husband and son’s names that would have gone into extinction are now going to be heard for a long time to come because they have somebody to answer to them. While the first son is named after her late son, Thomas Awuhe, the second son is named after her husband Patrick Terlumum.
“I married a wife for my late husband and son so that I can keep their names alive,” she enthused. “Their names cannot just die with them; they will grow up and inherit what we laboured for. Any other person in my shoe would have done that. I lost my husband and only son; more painful was my son who died unmarried. But I’m fulfilled that my late son now has two male children who are bearing his name. I looked at life and asked whether it was really worth it. I hope for death every day. Any time I wake up, I think about what the future holds since my husband and only son are late. They have gone leaving me alone. Their death till date is agonizing to me. But my consolation is that I have got a replacement for them.”
Happily married to a dead man
She announced that any moment from now she would commence the process of changing all the documents regarding all her property to their names. She also has a big dream for their young mother, Juliet. “She is comfortable answering my son’s name,” she said. “She wrote JAMB and I’m processing her admission to the Federal University, Lafia. Hopefully, she will start a degree programme next year; she is humble, loyal and focused.”
Mrs. Juliet Muese Antom agrees that she is comfortable answering Mrs. Antom’s son’s name. “That is God’s design for my life,” she said. “My parents were fully prepared to shame me that I got pregnant while in the secondary school.
I was very young then and could not tell exactly who among my boyfriends impregnated me. But I strongly suspected one Mark, but he denied and ran away. I was desperate without a place to go until Hajia came, so for me I’m very ok.
“I have no problem, in fact I’m doing better than those who got married to living husbands. Hajia is planning to buy a car for me next year if I secure a university admission. It is unfortunate that I never met my late husband. I only see his pictures but that is how God designed it. As you can see, I’m looking sweet and people toast me a lot, but I shun them. At the moment, I have a boyfriend who is a student at the state university, Keffi. Though Hajia does not teleguide me but I make sure she does not know when I have sex with my guy. She deserves that respect.
“My first son’s biological father denied him. My second son’s biological father who is a student at Keffi is married. He is equally responsible for this very one l’m carrying, but he cannot come and claim them. So, there is no problem. I’m good to go.”
Village head reacts
Speaking in a chat with Saturday Sun , the village head in Doma LGA, Chief Angbande Hue, said what happened is a known tradition among his people, adding that the tradition was very rampant in the 60s. He explained that since the woman went there with elderly men from her village to ask for the girl’s hand in marriage, it is traditionally genuine. Those children are accepted in that place and it has become their place of origin.
He noted that most women who usually engaged in this kind of practice had passed the age of childbearing and most have lost their husbands and male children.
“We have a lot of such cases in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba states. Among the Tiv people, there is no problem with what she did. Under our tradition, even the biological father of those children cannot lay claim to them because they did not pay the bride price; it is the person who paid the bride price that is considered to be the legitimate owner.”
Lawyer agrees
Emmanuel Akur, a legal practitioner told Saturday Sun that such cases are handled in the customary court and the court looks at the custom of the tribe to take a decision. If the Tiv tradition says that the payment of bride price is a criterion for ascertaining the rightful owner of the child, so shall it be, he argued.
“I think there is no issue here,” he said. “Nobody has come to lay claim to these children. The woman, accompanied by elders of the village, paid the bride price of this girl to secure her hand in marriage. That makes it legal. So the origin of those children is not in doubt as far as customary law is concerned.” http://sunnewsonline.com/woman-58-marries-27-yr-old-lady-to-bear-children-for-late-son/lalasticlala |

member of a robbery gang, Wasiu Ganiu, that shot the Divisional Police Officer of Ogbere Division has expressed joy that he was not cut down in a gale of bullets during a gun duel between his gang and Operatives of the Federal Special Anti – Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ogun State.
The DPO of Ogbere Division was shot at close range last September 13 when members of Wasiu’s robbery gang ambushed him and his team. They also stole the DPO’s AK 47 rifle.
Following the shooting, the FSARS Operatives were instructed to go fish out the gang and when their hideout was located, gun battle ensued between them and the FSARS which resulted in the death of the gang leader nicknamed Mungo Park, the arrest of two including Wasiu while one of the escaped into the bush with bullets wounds in Itele – Ijebu area of Ogun State.
Items recovered from them were two AK47 rifles, one pump action gun, seven magazines loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition each, one Toyota Sienna Car, One motorcycle, one jackknife and five live cartridges. Wasiu Ganiyu who was paraded on Wednesday before journalists at Eleweran, the Police Command Headquarters, by the Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, said he took to robbery to survive but added that it was a thing of joy that the bullets from Police didn’t kill him like it happened to his colleague.
The suspect who had earlier served three years jail sentence disclosed further to journalists that he joined the gang when his commercial motorcycle, a source of livelihood, was taken away.
Wasiu who begged the government to give him a second chance to repent said the highest share he ever got after a successful robbery and kidnapping business was N80,000.
“I have never killed anybody in my life. It is Mongo pack (gang leader) that shot the DPO. I ventured into robbery to survive after my okada was stolen.
“The highest money I got since three years ago is N80,000. The government should have mercy on me. I thank God I did not die in the gun battle and I am happy I was caught by the police,” he said.
Also paraded along with Wasiu Ganiu by the Police Commissioner, are 69 other suspects who were arrested in different locations in Ogun after a special operation called “Operation Criminal Mop Up.” Two of the suspected ritualists – Jimoh Olanrewaju and Seun Babatunde, were arrested by men of FSARS on September 10 after one of them, a cemetery attendant whose trade is to remove the corpse, dismembered it and sell the parts to interested buyers.
Items recovered are assorted charms suspected to be prepared with human parts.
Three fake soldiers were also paraded. Illiyasu said the Onipanu division of the police received information on September 14 about three men disguised as soldiers to snatch vehicles from people around Sango-Ota axis and they were arrested.
They are Abiona Ipaye, Afolabi Olawale and Moses Ayodeji. One toy Barreta pistol, one jackknife and Nigerian Army uniform were recovered from them. http://thenationonlineng.net/glad-police-bullets-didnt-kill-says-robbery-suspect/https://thenationonlineng.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/The-Suspects-arrested-by-Police-e1507145205354.jpg |
Family › Man Takes Fight To Father’s Grave Over Sharing Of Properties by Islie(op): 10:25pm On Oct 04, 2017 |
CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
T he late Gabriel Okwukogwu may not be resting in peace in his grave after all, as he was said to have attracted the anger of his first son, simply known as Emmy for sharing his properties among his seven children including the four women in Anambra State.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that an infuriated Emmy reportedly went to his father’s grave to tell him that he will not comply with the will he prepared when he was alive. The family is from Orlu in Imo State but stays at G.M.O Road in Ogbaru area of Onitsha metropolitan city in Anambra.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that Emmy who resides in Lagos returned after the death and burial of his late father. After the burial the late father’s lawyer called the members of the family, presented their late father’s will and read it to the children for implementation.
However, trouble was said to have started after the counsel got through reading the will and Emmy discovered that their late father shared his properties to his children including the women among them.
It was gathered that the late Okwukogu had properties both in Onitsha and Owerri which he shared equally among the children not minding the gender status. P.M.EXPRESS gathered that when the lawyer finished reading the will to the children, Emmy got angry and declared that the will did not come from their father because he really understood the culture and tradition as observed in Igbo land.
It was gathered that the culture did not recognise women because it was expected that they will get married to their husbands and therefore were not entitled to inherit any property from their family. Thus Emmy insisted that the culture and tradition will be applied in the sharing of the properties.
An infuriated Emmy reportedly left the meeting and headed to their family house in Orlu, went to his father’s grave and protested; that he will not comply with his purported will because he did not comply with the laid down customs and tradition in the land.
It was gathered that Emmy’s decision to reject the will was causing serious problem in the family as the women in question threatened to fight for their rights as contained in the will rejected by their eldest brother.
When P.M.EXPRESS spoke to some Igbo leaders concerning the incident, some spoke against the sharing and declared that Emmy was right because women werr not entitled to inherit family properties according to tradition. Others said that it was the old practice and the properties in question were not family houses which the women will never inherit according to tradition.
It was however not certain how the matter will be resolved because the will was regarded as a valid document that must be complied with despite any perceived defects. http://pmexpressng.com/man-takes-fight-fathers-grave-sharing-properties/lalasticlala |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday apologised to its former National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, for what it called the injustice he suffered in the party which led to his exit from its fold.
The chairman of the PDP caretaker committee in Osun State, Sarafa Tunji Ishola, a former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, led a delegation of chieftains of the party to Oyinlola at his country home in Okuku, where they delivered the party’s apology and asked for the forgiveness of the former Osun state governor.
The PDP caretaker chairman said the visit was not to lure Oyinlola back to the party but to apologise to him for the injustice meted to him by the party.
“The decision to be member of any party is a personal one and we respect that decision of yours. Our mission is to come and ask for forgiveness, that you forgive us in your heart and we admit that what happened to you was an injustice and an error,” Sarafa Tunji Ishola appealed.
Thereafter, all members of the caretaker committee prostrated to Oyinlola to appeal for his forgiveness.
Apart from the caretaker chairman, several other leaders of the PDP were in the entourage. This included former deputy to Oyinlola, Erelu Olusola Obada, former speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adejare Bello and former member of the National Population Commission, Alhaji Lere Oyewumi, among others Oyinlola in his response said he cherished the visit and explained that he felt concerned that issues went the way they went during his last days in the PDP despite all his efforts to ensure the unity of the party was protected.
He said the reign of indiscipline and impunity within the PDP led to his exit and the series of crises within the party as well as the division that later resulted in the electoral setback for the party.
“I want to say that I did everything humanly possible to make sure that the division did not come from me. I went to the extent of writing to the leadership of the party, the then Mr. President to draw his attention to the issues that were eroding on the unity of the party but it seemed my own sincerity about the whole issues were misconstrued.”
The former governor who said he felt vindicated by the visit and the apologies tendered, maintained that politicians must rub minds together and exploit all avenues of peaceful resolution of conflicts
“I want to take a recourse to the Bible which says “if your brother transgesses, rebuke him; if he repents, forgive him. it is on that score that I want to say I have forgiven and forgotten all that was done to me.”
He, however, said he was happy that the PDP chieftains said they respected his decision to choose the party he wished to belong to while he used the occasion to also introduce some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state who joined him to receive them.
Oyinlola advised politicians in the country to always seek for the progress of the country, irrespective of the side of the political divide they belonged.
According to him, political affiliation of politicians may differ but the delivery of democracy dividends to the people must be important to them. http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/pdp-apologises-ex-national-secretary-oyinlola/lalasticlala |
Politics › One Month After, Buhari In Dilemma Over Babachir, Oke by Islie(op): 8:56pm On Oct 02, 2017 |
• Shehu Sani calls for immediate release of Osinbajo reportBy Bolaji Adebiyi in Abuja
More than a month after the submission of the report of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo committee that investigated the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir Lawal, and the Director-General of National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayo Oke, President Muhammadu Buhari remains undecided on what to do with the two senior officials of his government who were asked to step down from office more than five months ago.
Both were suspended from office on April 19, 2017, and asked to go and clear themselves of allegations of corrupt practices before a three-man committee headed by the vice-president.
Other members of the committee, which was given 14 days to turn in its report were the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno, and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami.
Although the report was ready for submission on May 8, it was put on hold as the president had to travel to London a day earlier for medical reasons. It was eventually submitted on August 23, 2017, after his return.
Asked for his committee’s findings, Osinbajo told State House correspondents to await presidential action on the report, suggesting that the wait might not be long since the investigation did not fall within the category of one that required a white paper committee to review before a decision could be made on it.
Since its submission, it has been more than a month and Senator Shehu Sani, who headed the Senate committee that raised the dust over Babachir’s alleged mismanagement of funds meant to ameliorate the humanitarian crisis in the North-east, said yesterday that the delay in the release of the Osinbajo report was unbecoming of a government that had made war against graft its priority.
“We are deeply concerned that more than a month after President Buhari received the Osinbajo report, action has not been taken on it,” he told THISDAY, urging the president to expedite steps to release the report.
Although the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, told THISDAY last week that there was no cause for anxiety as his boss was taking his time to consider the report, presidency sources said the president might, in fact be in a dilemma on how to implement the findings of the Osinbajo committee, which reportedly indicted Lawal and recommended his removal from office.
“The committee found that the award of a contract to a company related to another company in which the SGF had interests was improper, and therefore an indefensible infraction of the code of conduct for public officers,” a reliable source said, adding: “It was recommended that he be relieved of his position in the public interest.”
On Oke, the source said the committee found that the foreign currency equivalent of N13.3 billion found in a flat in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos belonged to the NIA as claimed by the suspended spy boss, but queried the unusual operational procedures of the agency, which it argued were open to widespread abuse and corruption.
“The committee recommended his immediate retirement as well as the overhaul of the agency’s financial rules and procedures to make them more transparent within the context of the demands of its peculiar operations as an external intelligence arm of the country,” the source said the report had recommended.
Multiple presidency sources said although Buhari has no problem implementing the recommendations on Oke, since he (Oke) is expected to retire in a few months, and the regulations guiding the operational procedures of the NIA are within the powers of the president to review without recourse to the legislature, his main challenge is how to provide a soft landing for Lawal.
Lawal, said a source, is a close ally and confidant of Buhari, who, as the national vice chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) North-east, worked tirelessly for the victory of the president in the region during the 2015 general election.
Relieving him of his post, according to the source, would amount to sacrificing him, an action which close confidants of the president suggest would be politically inexpedient, as it would whittle down their ranks in the Presidential Villa power configuration.
“But given the wide public interest Lawal’s case has generated, and against the background of the obvious reluctance of the presidency to move against him until the Oke matter broke, it would be equally politically inexpedient not to relieve him of his post as SGF,” the source said.
Besides, said another source, Lawal’s removal would present its own political complications as North-east politicians would demand that his replacement comes from their region, even as South-east party bigwigs have argued that the vacancy has presented Buhari an opportunity to redress the perceived marginalisation of the region (South-east) in political appointments since he assumed office.
Sani corroborated this line of thinking in his interview with THISDAY yesterday, saying: “The Senate and the Osinbajo committees’ reports have become a bone in the throat of the president.”
According to the senator who headed the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Investigation on Mounting Humanitarian Crisis in the North-east that indicted Lawal in December last year, “President Buhari is caught in a dilemma. If he acts on the Osinbajo report and punishes Lawal, he would be stepping on the toes of his friends, who are his close confidants.
“If he fails to take action on the report, he would be stepping on the toes of Nigerians, who will judge his anti-corruption crusade by his decision on the report,” Sani reasoned.
Saying Buhari has no option than to act and remove Lawal from office, Sani warned that the president’s delay in acting on the Osinbajo report was casting a stain on the federal government’s crusade against graft.
“My proverbial insecticide and deodorant tale has become a reality and would remain so until the president acts on the Osinbajo report,” he said.
Lawal had been accused by the Senate of awarding a N200 million grass-cutting contract to Rholavision Nigeria Limited, a company he allegedly had interests in, through the Presidential Initiative on North-east (PINE), which at the time was under his supervision.
The Senate recommended his removal from office and prosecution. But the federal government, which asked the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Malami, to investigate the Senate allegation, rejected the recommendations on the grounds that he and his company were not given fair hearing before the Senate came to its conclusions.
As the Senate tried to invite Lawal and his company to come and defend themselves, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) broke the news of a cash haul totalling N13.3billion in an unoccupied flat in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi in Lagos.
With the NIA claiming ownership of the huge funds, Oke’s trouble began, necessitating his suspension along with Lawal.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President, Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said the president had ordered a full-scale investigation into the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the EFCC which were being claimed by the NIA.
According to Adesina, the investigation would inquire into the circumstances in which the NIA came into possession of the funds, how and by whose or which authority the funds were made available to the NIA.
The investigation was also to establish whether or not there had been a breach of the law or security procedure in obtaining custody and use of the funds. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/10/02/one-month-after-buhari-in-dilemma-over-babachir-oke/lalasticlala |

A MAN from Bulawayo’s New Magwegwe suburb no longer has peace in his life.
His ex-wife beats him up whenever she spots him in the company of women. Maxwell Magaruwa will live to curse the day he fell in love with Lubelihle Mdlongwa.
The two parted ways after being customarily married for one-and-a-half years. They reportedly failed to solve their marital problems.
Unfortunately despite going separate ways, they are neighbours and always meet resulting in fights.
“I was customarily married to Lubelihle and we have a child together. After our separation in January 2017, she always assaults me and I have never reported her to the police.
“We stay close to each other so when she gets drunk, she always beats me up,” said Magaruwa.
However, Mdlongwa disputed the allegations saying they would be fighting.
“He is not telling the truth because we will be fighting. He provokes me by bringing women close to my house and there is one time I confronted and slapped him.
“At times he follows me to my house resulting in a fight and does not want to support the child,” said Mdlongwa.
It was one’s word against the other as they played the blame game in court and magistrate Tancy Dube granted the order in favour of the applicant and Mdlongwa was ordered not to physically and verbally abuse him. http://www.b-metro.co.zw/woman-beats-ex-hubby-for-being-with-other-women/lalasticlala

It was tragedy at sunrise in the Agosi area of Ifo in Ogun State, after a 31-year-old man, Yinka Adewoyin, was beaten to death while he was trying to make peace between two men during a scuffle.
The incident happened penultimate Thursday.
Sources said Adewoyin was returning from a beer joint with some of his friends when they sighted two men identified as Kazeem aka Down gear and Mopo brutalising an elderly mechanic called Mukaila Lasisi.
Kazeem was said to have reprimanded Lasisi for working on a truck parked along the road. He was said to have ordered the removal of the truck from the road, a request Lasisi turned down on the grounds that he was not the owner of the vehicle.
Lasisi’s response allegedly irked Kazeem, who in a fit of fury pounced on Lasisi and beat him up.
It was at this junction that Adewoyin, who was passing by intervened and pleaded with Kazeem and his friend, Mopo to leave Lasisi alone.
The duo however queried Adewoyin’s audacity to intervene and beat him mercilessly till he fell down, hit his head on the ground and passed into a coma.
His assailants allegedly bolted while Adewoyin was taken to a nearby private hospital by bystanders.
He was said to have died at the undisclosed hospital three days after he was admitted.
An eyewitness who asked not to be named, said: ‘’It was an unfortunate incident. I was the one who reported the incident at the nearest police station. I later led some policemen to Kazeem’s shop in order to arrest him, but he was nowhere to be found.
When we called his mobile telephone number, he said he has travelled to Kaduna.
When he was asked to report to the station because of the man he beat to death, he cut off the conversation and hung up.”
The deceased was described by one of his former trainees, Tosin, as humble and respectful. He said: “Throughout my stay with him as apprentice, he did not fight with anyone. I was therefore shocked when I was told on the telephone that he was killed during a scuffle.”
Police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi was not reachable on his mobile telephone line at press time. http://thenationonlineng.net/31-yr-old-peacemaker-killed-scuffle-ogun-community/lalasticlala |
Family › Man Battles Late Brother’s Wife Over Adopted Son, Properties by Islie(op): 7:07pm On Sep 29, 2017 |
CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
The battle for supremacy over an inheritance has engulfed a family following the adoption of a male child in Umuchu town in Aguata Local government, Anambra State.
The battle is between a widow simply known as Fidelia and her late husband’s brother, Cosmos on who will inherit the late John’s property in the family.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered the fight which started from the family to the police has gone up to the High Court in Anambra and yet seemed unabated.
It was gathered that the late John married Fidelia some years back and they had two daughters before he became sick and died three years ago.
Before then, John and Fidelia had started the process of adopting a male child before he died.
Fidelia completed the process thereafter and adopted the male child.
Meanwhile, Cosmos who was late John’s younger brother also married and had his own children both male and female and he is now the eldest in the family.
It was gathered that in Umuchu Community, when a man died without having a male child, the brother will inherit both his wife and the property as their customs and tradition demanded.
The female children have no right over the family property because it was expected that they will marry.
But Fidelia disagreed and claimed that her husband had children including the adopted son and therefore her late husband’s property belonged to them.
But Cosmos insisted that when his brother was alive, he had no male child as such he was the rightful person that will inherit the wife, his property and train the children he left behind according to their customs and tradition.
On the status of the adopted child, Cosmos claimed that he was not part of the family and he had no right to inherit anything in the family.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that Cosmos attempt to take possession of the wife and property had caused serious friction between him and the widow to the extent the matter has become a subject of litigation.
It was gathered that the members of the family were divided on how to handle the perceived complex nature of the matter because of the adopted male child.
Some of the family members said that Cosmos was right because his late brother did not complete the process of adoption and did not introduce the adopted child to the family before he died.
Some said such culture and tradition was outdated and since the late John started the process of the adoption, though he did not complete it before he died that male child belonged to him.
The traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Goddy Ezechukwu could not intervene and settle the matter before it was taken to court and it was not known how the rift will be finally settled. http://pmexpressng.com/man-battles-late-brothers-wife-adopted-son-properties/lalasticlala |

Politics › Kanu: Why FG Can’t Hold Abaribe, Others Responsible - NewTelegraphOnline by Islie(op): 1:13pm On Sep 24, 2017 |
Posted by Onwuka Nzeshi
The move by the Federal Government to hold Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and others responsible for the disappearance of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), may hit a brickwall as legal opinions outside government circles do not seem to support such a plan.
A source conversant with the matter told our correspondent that the preponderance of legal opinions showed that it was the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. T.Y. Buratai, and the Commanders of Operation Python Dance (2) that should be held responsible for Kanu’s disappearance and not anyone else.
According to our source, the Federal Government and its military would have themselves to blame if Kanu remains incommunicado, by October 17, 2017, the date he is expected to appear in court to answer to the charges pending against him.
“The idea of holding sureties responsible for the disappearance of Nnamdi Kanu is not only ridiculous but laughable. It is true that some personalities signed the bail bond that led to his release from prison.
It is also true that Kanu may have violated some of his bail conditions, but that should have been left to the court to decide and then mete the necessary sanctions on him.
“The bail bond was the outcome of a judicial process and therefore, a legal instrument of a court of competent jurisdiction.
It is obvious that the court did not envisage that the Federal Government, a party in the dispute, will, at some point, take the laws into its own hands and act in the manner it has done.
“Why did the Federal Government decide to resort to self help by invading the residence of Kanu with armoured tanks? It is more or less jungle justice to invade the home of an unarmed Nigerian citizen, shooting sporadically at the building and causing unquantifiable collateral damages.
As it is today, neither Kanu’s lawyers nor the sureties have seen Kanu since the military invasion of his home.
“It is only the Federal Government and the military that can tell the world why they prempted the court and decided to take the laws into their on hands. It is because they either wanted to arrest Kanu and detain him ahead of his date in court, or they wanted to kill him using jungle justice. Either way, they cannot eat their cake and have it.
The onus lies on them to produce Kanu when the need arises because they have willfully sidelined the due process of court in their desperation to achieve political goals.
They can’t eat their cake and still have it,” the source said. Although Abaribe could not be reached on his mobile phone for reactions to the development, his Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Mr. Uche Awom, told Sunday Telegraph that his principal and others who stood surety for Kanu did so in good faith and as law abiding citizens of Nigeria.
According to Awom, there was no cause for alarm as the sureties had kept their own side of the bargain before the military threw spanners in the works. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2017/09/kanu-fg-cant-hold-abaribe-others-responsible-investigation/ |
Politics › Ex-Governor Loses Hotel In Singapore To Mistress by Islie(op): 5:02am On Sep 24, 2017 |
Posted By: Yusuf Alli
A run-away former governor has lost a choice hotel in Singapore to the latter day wife he used to launder his loot.
The ex-governor is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly benefitting from the $2.1billion arms scandal.
Also hanging on his neck is an allegation that he mismanaged N19.8billion public funds while in office.
He has refused to honour EFCC invitation CR: 3000/EFCC/ABJ/ASO/TM5/VOL.5/596. The Nation gathered that the ex-governor used to frequent Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
But following the recent signing of six agreements by Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), he reportedly left Dubai for Singapore.
A highly placed source familiar with the ongoing probe of the ex-governor, said the suspect entered into a marriage of convenience with the woman in Singapore with a view to protecting the investment of his laundered funds in the choice hotel.
He reportedly bought the hotel in the name of the ‘wife’.
“But the marriage turned into a scam because the ‘wife’ divorced the ex-governor and took possession of the hotel,” the source said yesterday.
“The suspect has been battling to retrieve the hotel from his ‘wife’. It is however doubtful if he can get it back.”
It was learnt that the ex-governor is now in a serious dilemma.
Investigation revealed that over N600million of the $2.1billion arms scandal fund has so far been traced to the ex-governor.
Another source said EFCC has been on his trail in connection with the alleged mismanagement of N19.8billion state funds between 1999 and 2007.
“Documents showed that he collected N600million illegally from the $2.1billion arms deal cash through the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA),” the source said.
“Initially, the suspect was based in Dubai but following a close up by detectives, he left the UAE for some countries where he has been on a make-shift life.
“We are weighing options on how to extradite him in order to bring him to justice. We will explore all legal options.
Responding to a question, the source added: “The former governor has been giving one excuse or the other for not honouring the invitation of the EFCC.
“At a point, the suspect said he had a heart-related problem but intelligence report confirmed that he was pretending.”
Meanwhile, the acting chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has asked Nigerian youths to take up the gauntlet and become change agents in the fight against corruption in the country.
Represented by the head of the Benin Zonal office, Mailafia Yakubu, at an event to mark World Peace Day celebration in Benin City, Magu said the biggest challenges facing Nigeria were the “twin evils of corruption and impunity.”
He charged the youths to imbibe the culture of excellence as future leaders of the country and to shun all forms of criminality.
“The corrupt and other economic and financial criminals can no longer hide because the Commission is working hard to bring them to justice,” he added.
Magu said it was disheartening that some youths were involved in advance fee fraud but warned that the prevailing economic challenge was not an excuse to commit crime.
He said: “I agree that the country is going through a process but it is not an excuse to commit crime, be legitimate in your dealings so you can be the future leaders that you are.” http://thenationonlineng.net/2-1b-arms-scandal-fleeing-ex-governor-loses-choice-hotel-singapore-mistress/ |
