Professor Soludo’s article on the elections in Nigeria is the best writing I have read recently on the real situation politically and economically in Nigeria. The well-articulated response from Dr. Fayemi compared to the abuse infused response from Femi Fani-Kayode on the PDP side is a great example of the contrast of the status-quo compared to the alternative.

Whatever the case and I don’t expect miracles form APC but right now they have more thinking people than the PDP.

As a Yoruba person, Dr. Fayemi’s response is how we expect our educated elite to take up issues and not the mad ranting’s of Fani-Kayode. I agree with most of his premise but I do not think they (APC) can take up a massive public works program in a period of “famine” i.e. low oil prices. During the great depression when Roosevelt used public works to help provide jobs, it was the stock market that failed i.e. Government revenue was affected from tax income but income from exportation which was then mainly agricultural goods was not affected.

The government could use money from its coffers to create jobs and provide skills and training, which people could then use in the private sector. The best part of Dr. Fayemi’s response is that it is not elite focused. Nigerian governance as I saw it was not a democracy but an elitocracy. Govt of the elite by the elite for the elite and even if you grew up in near death poverty once you left those circumstances you forgot where you came from and concentrated on your immediate family and matters affecting the well-being of the elite.

Changing this perspective to make the elite understand that their wellbeing was in fact dependent on the wellbeing of the masses will be APC’s challenge. They are sourcing from the same pool of elite talent that every Nigerian government has to source from and it is this pool that essentially has to be different or we will find ourselves again at precipice as usual. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the PDP and the Presidency of orchestrating the ongoing campaign for election postponement, despite their serial denial and the phantom assurances that they are ready for the polls.

‘’There is no clearer indication that the PDP and the Presidency are the puppeteers behind the election shift campaign than Wednesday’s newspaper advertorial plainly campaigning for the polls to be shifted,’’ the party said in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

‘’This advert, which has the picture of President Goodluck Jonathan and the logo of the PDP – meaning they will be the sole beneficiaries of the postponement they are seeking – leaves no one in doubt that the ruling party and the presidency are pathologically dishonest, deliberately deceptive and chronically terrified about the elections,’’ it said.

The APC said now that all pretences are off and the sponsors of the election postponement campaign have been unveiled, Nigerians must reject them and their campaign.

‘’The campaign, which is hinged on the fact that many Nigerians have not collected their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC), is not sincere. If it is, the PDP and the Presidency would have instead been urging Nigerians to go all out and collect their PVCs so the election can hold. Why is this so impossible for them to do?

‘’Like we said earlier, what prevents the federal government from declaring a three-day public holidays to give Nigerians the opportunity to collect their PVCs? Why is it that only the PDP and its sponsored groups and individuals are the ones leading the campaign for election postponment, even as our party, the APC, has been campaigning for Nigerians to go and collect their PVCs?

‘’Is it not instructive that at least 26 political parties have joined the no-postponement campaign, while the PDP/Presidency, as well as the lick-spittle individuals and groups who have been compromised one way or another, continue to beat the drums of election shift?’’ the party said.

It wondered why the PDP/Presidency will be second-guessing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has said it is ready to go ahead with the elections, and that it will be distributing PVCs until the eve of the election.

While urging its members and supporters in particular, and all Nigerians in general to remain vigilant and be firm in saying ‘no’ to election postponement, the APC appealed to the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN) to ensure that the courts are not used as a tool to sabotage the elections and indeed the nation’s democracy.

‘’We know that the next frontier in the ongoing battle by the PDP/Presidency to get our candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, disqualified and have the elections postponent, is the court. We know they will seek to secure spurious injunctions to scuttle the elections, following the footsteps of the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) in 1993. This is why we are appealing to the CJN,’’ APC said.

The party added: ‘’For the avoidance of doubt, we are ready for the elections and we will not, under any circumstance, support any shift in the dates for the elections, which were fixed more than a year ago.

‘’If the PDP and the Presidency are not afraid of anything, we challenge them to come out today to denounce the campaign for election postponement, dissociate themselves from it and announce unequivocally that they are ready for the elections. Failure to do that, they stand accused of working hard to sabotage the elections and truncate the nation’s democracy.’’

I talked as a professional. The letter comes with the demand notice for 2015 Land Use Charge. They usually put it in the envelope of people that are not owing previous ones.
The demands by law is supposed to be issued by January every year but because of circulation, they started distributing it on time.
Please Bros, believe whatever you want, it is a free world, I may scan some I have received to you when I get to the office.

Formal letters are not post dated and certainly not Government letters.

Forget the date.

The letter has a refrence number, address of origin and duly signed by the commissioner for finance.

The date can be an error from the same office which may have been overlooked by the recipient and the author at the Time of issuance.

Jimi is not daft as to forge a govt document with stamp and signature of a commissioner and then display it to the public.

Anybody this daft to forge a govt document will not display it to the public because it can easily be verified from the records office.

Kaduna (NDR) - This certificate scandal of Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has really opened the eyes of many. Initially, some of us in the north thought that Goodluck Jonathan in his desperate move to remain in power beyond 2015 wants to use this certificate issue to shut out our champion, Buhari.


But from every indication, the opposite is the case. It's an understatement to say that I'm ashamed of being a Muslim and be supporting Buhari. Islam is not about lies and evil. Islam is a true religion based on peace and unity. 


For over a month, Buhari is yet to provide his certificate and remove the shame he has painted on us, his diehard supporters. I mean, how difficult is it for Buhari to instruct WAEC to send a copy of his certificate to INEC, not to Premium Times? Is this so difficult? He doesn't need to travel to do this. The time he used in Press Conference is the same opportunity he would tell WAEC to kindly send his certificate to INEC. By so doing, the whole world would know that he is truly a man of integrity and incorruptible. 


Organizing a Press Conference with the aim to release a shabbily prepared Statement of Result is not ideal, especially when the CERTIFICATE is there with WAEC. Or is the Statement of Result more valuable than the CERTIFICATE?


For 2 days now, I have thought about everything I held Buhari at high esteemed thinking that he was being victimized by the lucifers in PDP, but I was wrong. I have come to a solid conclusion that he has been lying to us, his ardent supporters. I am ashamed to say this, but I must say it. I must describe Buhari in 6 words:


1. FRAUD - he entered the army without any certificate but rose to the rank of Maj-General taking salaries and pensions which he didn't merit.


2. COUPIST - he was the arrowhead in ousting Gowon in 1976 as well as Shagari in 1983.


3. LOOTER - I now believe the $2 billion in midland bank Fela sang about.


4. BIGOT - He jailed politicians that are not from his ethnic group or how could one explain why Shagari wasn't jailed but Ekwueme was. He feels so proud that he executed 76% of PTF projects in the north, neglecting even our Muslim brothers and sisters in the Southwest.


5. LIAR - He maintains that Abacha didn't steal just because he followed Abacha and looted Nigeria dry. He claims to have N1m in his bank account, yet his children are in the UK schooling where millions of naira are paid as Tuition fees.


6. FORGER - this one is causing me depression. I can't believe that Buhari has no single certificate, instead of him to open up, he went and forged one. 

We have no option than to stick with Jonathan till 2019. Buhari has messed us up walahi!

The Federal Government on Wednesday described the five year tenure of Prof Chukuwma Soludo as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria as a failure and a disaster to the banking sector.

Soludo who was the apex bank governor between May 2004 and May 2009, had on Monday written an article where he claimed that the Nigerian economy under President Goodluck Jonathan had performed woefully.

But the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala while reacting through a statement issued by her Special Adviser Communications, Mr Paul Nwabuikwu said Soludo through his article has committed what she described as “intellectual harakiri.”

The Minister noted that not only was the article littered with abusive and unbecoming language, it shows Soludo, whom she described as an “embittered loser in the Nigerian political space” can get so derailed by misquoting economic facts and maliciously turning statistics on their head to justify a hatchet job.”

What’s your view of Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari?

I met him for the first time in 1984 at the Dodan Barrack, Lagos, after he came into power in December 1983. I was the Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun/Oshun River Basin Development Authority at the time. He later called all heads of parastatals and ministries to a meeting in Abuja, where we defended how we ran our various agencies. We all took turns to do so. When it was my turn, I presented a detailed report and Buhari expressed satisfaction at my presentation.

However, he was not happy with some of those who presented their reports before me and he made it known immediately at the meeting. He told them to learn from my presentation and how I ran the office.

When I was asked to defend having a guest house and a school inside the premises of the Ogun/Oshun River Basin Development Authority in Abeokuta, I explained that because our location was some miles away from the main community, at least three hours of working time would be lost if my staff had to take their children to school in the morning and bring them back in the afternoon. I said the school was meant for their children and that we also accommodated pupils from the rural community around us.

I also explained that the guest house was meant for staff that had to travel from far places on official duty to our location and anyone among the public who wished to stay there. I told Buhari that it was not free. He was satisfied with my explanation. He said that he was impressed with the way I have managed our resources and time. When we were to leave, he called me and asked if I needed more money and I said that I would be happy. I got a 17 per cent raise in allocation. That was when the heads of parastatals were given the authority to have direct access to their finances instead of through the ministers of supervising ministries.

What I am saying here is that Buhari appreciates efficiency, honesty, competence and hard work. He does not associate himself with corruption and dishonesty. I met him again when he visited the Ikere Gorge Dam that we built in a remote part of Iseyin in Oyo State. He asked me why we were yet to erect the gate to the site and I told him that the gate was manufactured in Germany but it required an import licence to bring it to Nigeria. I also explained that even though I had applied for it, the ministry in charge was not ready to give me because the staff demanded illegal money which I was not ready to give. The minister in charge of the ministry was with us on the tour. Buhari told him immediately that he should personally deliver the licence to me immediately after the tour. The minister personally brought the licence to my office in Abeokuta.

I met Buhari again in 1997 when Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, invited me for a conference on irrigation. Buhari was also there. When he saw me, he came down from the raised platform to greet me. When it was time for lunch, he came to me again and held my hand and that of my friend, leading us to where we took our food. If you do your work diligently and honestly, Buhari will not forget you because he does not associate himself with corruption and indolence.

Some people have criticised Buhari for being desperate to rule this country. They are of the opinion that only a desperate person will contest for the same position since 2003. What is your opinion on this?

It is unfair to bring up issues like this because there is no need for it. Abraham Lincoln, who was a former president of the United States, contested and lost many elections. He ran for state legislature seat and lost in 1832. He lost again in 1843 and 1854 when he ran for a senate seat. He was also rejected when he sought to be land officer in his home state. Two years later, he lost in his bid to be considered as vice-president at his party’s convention. After losing his senate bid again in 1858, he got the US people’s votes to become president in 1860. We all know his great work as US president. People set a goal and get there when they are consistent. If Buhari does not have something to offer the nation, he will not be seeking their support since 2003.

One other criticism of Buhari is that he truncated civilian rule when he overthrew the Shehu Shagari government in 1983. Don’t you think this will have a negative effect on his quest to become president?

We have had military coups in Nigeria in the past. He was the Head of State at the time but are we sure he organised the coup? I am not defending him on that but since 1966 we have been having coups in Nigeria and we even had coups after Buhari. Buhari is not the only person to have been involved in a coup in Nigeria. But like I said, that is not enough reason to criticise him.

Are you satisfied that we could have a 72-year-old former soldier as Nigeria’s next president?

I am happy to read an analysis written by someone in the newspaper recently where he tabled the ages of Nigeria’s former Heads of State and presidents. Many of them reached the position in their 40s or a bit older. In other words, younger people have ruled Nigeria but is Nigeria a better country today?

We have countries with older presidents who are doing well. If I am given the opportunity to lead the nation today, will I do it badly? At my age, I know better and I understand the dynamics of leadership and governance because of the experience I have garnered through the various positions I have held. Age has a lot to do with experience, which also teaches us how to do things better.

For people like us who have followed Nigerian history and have been part of it, we cannot be happy with the way things are now. I graduated from the University of Ibadan in 1958 when Nigeria had not attained independence, so I witnessed colonial rule. I also witnessed governance in the independence era till date.

What’s your impression about the controversy surrounding Buhari’s certificate?

It is very irrelevant to the issue on the ground. If you have a degree certificate, can we say that you do not have a secondary school leaving certificate? The records show that Buhari possesses superior qualifications which he could not have acquired if he did not have secondary school certificate. Record shows that he attended courses with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Shehu Yar’Adua, and other colleagues in the Army. He could not have been considered for these courses if he did not possess a secondary school certificate.

We even have people who proceeded to secondary school from Standard Five in those days. Let me give you a personal experience. I don’t know where my primary school and secondary school certificates are today. I don’t also know where my other certificates are but can someone challenge me and say that I don’t posses secondary school certificate after attaining the height in my academic and professional pursuits? It is impossible because records will show in places where I have worked and where I obtained other certificates that I have even higher qualifications. It is an issue that should not have come up because there was no need for it. I am happy that a former Head of State has warned that we should not politicise the Nigerian Army.

Are you satisfied with Buhari’s choice of running mate?

I am aware that Buhari was involved in choosing his running mate. People say that he is a religious fanatic but I think he has answered them now. If he was a fanatic, he would not want to have anything to do with Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who is a pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Buhari is not a fanatic but people like to politicise issues in Nigeria. Buhari’s personal assistant, driver and cook are Christians. If he is actually a religious fanatic, he would have employed Muslims to work with him instead of having anything to do with those Christians who work for him.

How will you rate Nigeria under President Goodluck Jonathan?

Today’s Nigeria is not the best we hoped for. The nation has not improved as expected under this administration. I attended one of the best secondary schools in Nigeria, Government College, Ibadan. Our final examination results were usually 100 per cent. In other words, every pupil passed his papers. Today, it is sad that the last examination recorded a 16 per cent pass in the school. That is just a school in Ibadan. We have a poor education system in Nigeria today because this government keeps changing the school syllabus. I have only talked about the education sector. If you say that your economy is improving, it must have a direct impact on the people. This is the first time that Nigeria will record more poor percentage of its population

A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Prof. Tam David-West, on Tuesday described Nigeria as a failed state.

David-West, at a news conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said that any government that could not protect its citizens was a failed government.

He said, “We have a failed state in Nigeria today. I have been reading what is happening in Rivers State. Any government that cannot protect its citizens is not worth being called a government.”

The professor of virology expressed his support for Governor Rotimi Amaechi and any party that would bring light over the country’s current darkness.

“I stand for a government that knows that 19 is bigger than 16. I stand for a party that I know will bring light to the darkness in Nigeria. I stand for a party of people of substance both in words and in character,” he said.

Also at the news conference, the All Progressives Congress in the state called on the United Nations, the Amnesty International and other relevant international organisations to intervene in the continued attacks on its members.

It said through its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, that while some of its members had been killed by suspected Peoples Democratic Party thugs, others had been seriously injured.

The party urged humanitarian and democratic organisations to send high-powered election monitoring teams to the state.

According to the APC, doing so would help to avert bloodbath and make the election outcomes in the state acceptable.

It said, “We call on Amnesty International, the International Red Cross, the relevant organs of the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and the United Nations to immediately begin investigation into the gruesome killings in Rivers State.

“An acceptable electoral outcome is possible in Rivers State only if the elections are truly free and fair. There cannot be free and fair elections if the spate of violent high handedness, intimidation and terror is not halted.

“As the 2015 general election approaches, the scale, magnitude and intensity of the orchestrated violence against members of the APC are assuming a frightful dimension.”

The APC which however called on its members to remain calm and law-abiding, criticised the police in the state for their inability to arrest any of those that participated in 13 different attacks on them.

It said, “This press conference is our distress call to all men, women, organisations, nations and people, who cherish democracy to intervene before it is too late.

“It is unimaginable that a President (Goodluck Jonathan), who himself claims his roots from Niger Delta would permit unprovoked and premeditated violent attacks on the same people he hopes to ride on their sentiments to retain his Presidency.”

Also, the lawmaker representing Rivers South-East, Senator Magnus Abe, attributed the harassment and intimidation of APC members to Jonathan’s fear that he might lose the state during the forthcoming elections.

“Another reason is because the PDP is bent on taking over power in Rivers State as a result of its (Rivers) economic significance in the country,” Abe said.

He, however, expressed dissatisfaction over the attitude of the police, saying, “We have reported many times to the police, but nothing has happened. There is no pretence about the partiality of security operatives. There is nothing we are saying that the authorities are not aware of.”

Also, the governorship candidate of the APC in the state, Dakuku Peterside, claimed that as of the time of the news conference, members of the party were being attacked in Khana and Etche Local Government Areas of the state.

“We have been receiving text messages from our members who are currently going through distress in the hands of political thugs,” Peterside added.
