NEVER in the history of this nation have the people and the media shown so much interest and delight in the toilet habit of one man known affectionately in stage shows as Baba Suwe. Suddenly, everyone is waiting eagerly for a man in custody to defecate publicly so we could all see what his faeces looks like. This is the ugly menu that the Nigerian news media, in particular the newspapers have served us on a daily basis since popular actor and stand-up comedian Babatunde Omidina (also known as Baba Suwe) was arrested last week by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

You know there is low quality news when Nigerian newspapers tell you how many times an actor has discharged excreta and whether there were traces of cocaine in the faeces. This is what some people refer to, in popular phraseology, as a “shit story” (pardon the distasteful language). It is odd that newspaper reporters would stake out one man held in detention, and open a diary in which they record how many times the man has visited the toilet.

The NDLEA and Baba Suwe are locked in a battle of wits - to see who will blink first. But it should not be a game for public consumption because it is repugnant and a distraction. The standoff between the accused (Baba Suwe) and the accuser (the NDLEA) is taking place in an uneven field. For example, while the agency has been doing all the talking and feeding journalists with morsels of information on how frequently or infrequently the detained comedian has attempted to empty his bowels, the man has frustrated his keepers by maintaining cold silence, the kind that seems to suggest “prove me guilty if you can.”
