Literature › Third Wheel by itsrandeeboi(op):
"Baby, hope you're okay."

I looked into my boyfriend's face, the light smile still there, waiting to resume full blown laughter and momentarily I was blind with rage. How could he even be asking me such a question? Hadn't he been sitting here beside me all this while? Hadn't he noticed my disposition at all? The barely concealed sighs and hisses? And the fact that, since I said hi, I had not uttered a single word?

"Nah, she is just meditating. Next thing, she'll say the spirit has spoken to her and she will open her own church. Hosanna The Lord Has Revealed Pentecostal, Apostolic and Presbyterian Multi-denominational Ministries" Chike said and they both burst into laughter.

For the second time in a few seconds, my stomach and throat tightened as blinding fury pulsed through me, seeking some sort of outlet, any form that could possibly involve hurting at least one of the two guys sitting beside the pool with me. It took all my reserves of self control to prevent my self from uttering a word. I'm usually very cool and I rarely ever retort angrily. Back when I was much younger, I was a lot more impulsive and after several fights with my brothers and some other kids in school, my mother decided I had my father's anger management problems and decided to put me through therapy. It mainly involved a lot of lashes with a whip whenever she got a report that I had as much as got in an argument with a classmate and soon enough, I was calm enough; more because of the thought of being lashed than because I truly knew that angry responses weren't the answer.

They had returned to talking and laughing about the very sexy and sophisticated looking girl they had spotted at the mall and how she promptly fell with a scream of "chineke moooo!!!", her wig, bag and one shoe flying in different directions, when she got on an escalator she had obviously never used before. It was funny, I admit, but then, today was not just about that alone.

I hated my boyfriend's best friend.

One would think I hated him because, maybe, he did not like me. Or he had tried making moves on me and I had turned him down but, for the sake of Segun, my boyfriend, I hadn't said anything. But it wasn't for either reason. Actually, Chike is a really nice guy. He is still single and says he is not interested in relationships, so everyday, he has a different girl on his arm but always makes it clear to them that he never is in it for the long run.

"That's because he is in it with your boyfriend for the long run!" Shade, my best friend, single and one-time admirer of Chike (turned antagonist after he told her point-blank that he really didn't think they were ever going to get serious) declared.

"Ahn, ahn, Shade!" I protested. "How can you say a thing like that?"

"Well, is it not the truth? They spend nearly all their free time together, watch football together, play tennis at the club together on Saturdays, and you're left listening to Demi Lovato singing heart attack. Don't worry, stay there. The heart attack go soon knack you."

And that was the crux of the problem. I felt like a third wheel in my own relationship. Chike and Segun did practically everything together, it was almost unreal. Even back when I was little and used to take the whole bestfriend thing really seriously, i'm not sure my then best friend and I used to spend as much time together as they did. And that was before jobs, relationships and responsibilities.

No, my boyfriend is not gay. I'm sure I would have known that if he were. And even if he were gay and Chike were his "partner" it would still be very weird the time they spent together. Even when I came along on one of their trips to the club to play tennis, I always felt like the ball boy. Or girl. Chike was taking up all my boyfriend's free time.

And I was hating him for it.

It would have been my fault if I hadn't complained to Segun. But he just blew it off as me being paranoid. Chike was just his very close friend and they had gone through pretty rough times together so it was only natural that they stayed together in pleasant times.

"But i'm your girlfriend," I wailed. " You rarely spend any time with me. Are you supposed to be dating me or him?"

"C'mon babe," he said, pulling me closer, that semi-mischievious smile that made me forgive him every time playing on his good-boy face. "You know you own me. And if a rock were to crush you and Chike. I would try to save you first."

It was oddly sweet and I rested my fears. But the next time I found myself listening to Demi Lovato while they were watching Manchester United play Liverpool, it went clean out of mind. I was seething privately while they "oooooh"ed, "aaaaaah"ed and "gooooooal"ed. It must have been obvious that I was angry because, once the match was over, Chike took one glance at my face and decided he had to go to the tailor's.
I ushered him out of the door before Segun could even offer to accompany him.

And Segun didn't even seem to notice my anger. For the rest of the day, I did not utter a word to him, even when he asked what was wrong.
But while I lay awake, seething and trying to come up with more ways to hate Chike, my boyfriend lay snoring beside me, without a care in the world.

"Look, it's about time you make Segun realize he has to reorganize his priorities o," Shade admonished. "If it were me, I would not even open the door for that rascal of a friend of his whenever he comes knocking. And I will make sure Segun does not even see him at all. What nonsense!"

Shade is a good friend, but she always suggests things she knows I can't do. Since my mother's "therapy", I've been non-confrontational and i've always opted to talk about a problem rather than fight over it.

And sometimes, I wonder if she was still single because of her radical suggestions.

But she was always there to listen to me. And whenever Segun, Chike and I were heading out together, I always invited her over to come along so I could have someone to talk to. It alwys ended in disaster because of the different dispositions: Me - Quiet Despair, Segun - Oblivious, Chike - Indifferent, Shade - Moderately Mad.

I have a sneaking feeling she still very much still likes Chike, probably more now than before, but is only mad because he doesn't even seem to remember she exists. So she takes every chance to antagonize him; the results always being me pulling away my yelling, angry friend away from the slightly amused and still very aloof Chike.

And now, my friend and I are even more united than ever.

In hatred of a man that denies me my boyfriend and denies her a boyfriend she would have loved to have.

And Segun was still oblivious to how I felt about the entire issue.

So when after a few more minutes, he turned to me to ask as he always did;

"Babe, are you okay?"

I smiled my iciest smile that could freeze hell over and said;

"Yes. Never been better."

The question is: is there as much divisiveness in reality or does the internet appear to just blow things out of proportion? Do we really hate each other or do we just have the natural respectful dislike everybody has for anybody from somewhere else?
Think of it. I go to markets and I see Igbo and Yoruba traders trading side-by-side without hassle, helping each other and sometimes making sales in the absence of their neighbour from another tribe. If we hated each other that much, would we be able to do that? I mean, sure the Yoruba man might think Igbo men like money too much or the Igbo man might think the Yorubas throw quite a lot of parties but then, think of it as an American thinking a German drinks too much beer and the German thinking the Americans really love guns. It doesn't mean they hate each other. The problem is that some people come online and just wantonly bash other tribes because they feel it is harmless but a huge majority of the people that engage in tribal bashing online have really good friends from the tribe they are bashing but they feel they're just catching fun at someone else's expense.

If there is any divisiveness, it is from some of our leaders who try to play us off against each other. Incidentally, among our corrupt leaders, they aren't tribally divisive. They share the money and everybody is happy meanwhile we keep deceiving ourselves that we hate each other.

Redlyn: If its not about procreation what for the benefit of society distinguishes a committed heterosexual couple from an uncommitted one.
Why should we discriminate - in terms of rewarding them - in favour of the committed couple?
Still trying to convince that one? Give it up already. Since Ihedinobi left this thread (and Nairaland) nothing close to a sound argument has been proffered by these guys (aka TV01). All he has been waving in the air is his procreation hogwash which, at best, stands on very wobbly feet. At this point, he is replying just because so he doesn't appear beaten. He has only presented one thing that, in his mind, is an actual point, since he joined this discussion and has consistently run away from pointed questions only to turn around to claim he has debunked them.

That Mr Bean strategy does not win arguments or convince people, my friend.

TV01: Yawn, yawn, yawn. Why are you introducing race and gender into a discussion about behaviour and desire?

Race and gender are immutable genetically pre-determined characteristics. Desires and behaviour are not. Stop feeding the board red herring and argue you position on it's merits. Like a real man grin!

Duh? How many types of human are there? And is the fact that they are sexed suggestive of two different species? I suppose children are yet another. Why did you come back to this thread again wink!

Language changes? Perhaps, but not to call what cannot be as if it were. A homosexual union can never qualify as a marriage. That would not be redefinition, it would be butchery.

Gay people are, gayness isn't. QED cool!

Procreative in principal if not always in practice. The premises of male/female remains and re-enforces the principle regardless of outcome.

Procreation is the reason marriage was instituted. And a marriage for the purpose of children is more than convenient. What other reason is there for marriage that serves state interest or requires state involvement? Waiting lipsrsealed!

The state rewards the couples commitments as it is in the best long-term interest of both child and state. A couple merely living together are not deemed married or afforded the rights/benefits of those that are, regardless of whether they have children.

Google the health cost of homosexuality, to both individual and state. Start with Gay bowel syndrome. Not pretty I tell you embarassed! The cost to society of homosexuality far outweighs smoking and we do not encourage that so we?

A stable opposite sex union is the best setting for children. Nobody is championing dysfunction here. And for sodomites, it's inherent. Fact!

And marriage is about neither, so whats your point exactly?

Can't recall mentioning incest? But whatever the case, it serves society to have a position on decency and morals. Especially where sex is concerned.

What an inane point shocked! I'm not sure I can dignify this with a response. Like really, this is an argument for gay marriage?

I chose to procreate and nurture! However, if you allow me to implement my Christian worldview end-to-end, I promise the problem will clear up cool!

TV
What you have done with this post of yours is run away from every point I have put to you because you don't have any cogent response to any of them. A pity, I was hoping for a sound argument but all you have done is blow hot air. I asked what you are doing to help poor, orphaned children to give them a good upbringing and you say you procreate? And, in your head, that is a sound answer? So, because you procreate, orphan children will rejoice because their futures are all bright and happy? You must have LSD rainbows shooting out of your bum!

Really, being homosexual is a chouce? Then heterosexuality must be a choice too. Pray tell, when did you "choose" to be attracted to women?

Really, wiegraf and the others were right. You are offering nothing close to a sound argument. Wonder why Ihedinobi left being the voice of the other side to you seeing as you are doing such a terrible job of it. You sound just like Chibuihem Amalaha!

There is some truth in what you say but it does not apply universally. For one, not everybody that does not profess God hates God. Second, considering how many Christians there are in Nigeria who apparently "love God", you would imagine that our country would be much better than it is now. The average Nigerian is corrupt in spite of all our "God love" and pretty much all of us are selective about how we love God.

What i've come to understand about people who were once mainstream christians but have now shunned mainstream christianity is that they have realized how modern day Christianity has confused God, who God is and how God wants to relate with human beings and have created a God that is judgemental, hateful and practically impossible to live by his rules. The fact is that God is not as difficult as many people make him and the gospel of fear being preached by many is not what God wants. Jesus came to spread the "good news" not the "fear news". We human beings just looooooove to make things hard for ourselves so we make God look even more demanding and judgemental because we feel that is how God should be using our human mentality.

Redlyn: Forget about this guy. his whole argument is marriage is there solely for procreation. So if you can't procreate there is no real reason for you to marry. He cannot understand why any non procreating couple could possibly want to marry. since It's only about procreating that makes infertile unions worthless and pointless.
Ah, my bad, didn't read page four, else I wouldn't have bothered commenting.

TV01: I said that the voice of the religious is every bit as valid as any other in a democracy. I did not prescribe a theocratic state. Scarecrow grin!

If "homosexuality" is right and good and proper, it follows that it has every right to be celebrated as any other legitimate lifestyle/sexuall expression.

In one breath you claim rights for sodomites, in another you deny them for legitimate minorities in a democratic setting?
You do realize that we blacks weren't always this accepted on the global stage as equals, right? Even now, when internationally important issues are being discussed, black nations still take the back seat and are seldom heard. Does that mean we are not good and proper? Think of women in government. Do you you think a woman should be president of this country? How come if you propose this idea to most Nigerian men, they would yell "What?!! A woman?!! No way!!" ? Shouldn't women be as celebrated in the fields of government and politics as men? Aren't they "right, good and proper"?

TV01: However old or new a descriptive word is, is not the point. If a language construct changes the essence of a thing, we need to ask why. Coining the word "homosexual" and as a contradistinction to heterosexual, suggests there are two types of human being? It's a contrivance and a lie. We only have male/female. To accept otherwise is to accept that a peadophile or polygamist is a "different type" also, as opposed to the same with different desires or inclinations. To normalise the deviancy called sodomy, they have to de-construct and reconstruct language.
You suggest in this post that there is only one type of human being. Then followed it up by saying we have male and female. Be consistent, brah. Language changes always to better define what it couldn't clearly define before. I don't have any issues with polygamy so I don't know why you keep throwing in polygamy. I have clearly outlined while homosexuality and peadophilia/beastiality/necrophilia and the rest are not the same as have several others on this thread and I will not go back into that.

TV01: Any human that engages in carpentry will use their hands though, not so? Unless of course they don't have any. All humans (bar outliers) can procreate and all do so in only one way. NO rights are being infringed on keeping marriage as it is. Contrary to what some incredulously believe, marriage was not instituted to infringe anyones rights and not based on what one likes to do with their members, but the real and required outcome of procreative coupling.

intimate design and functionality are clear. Desire is an amalgam of a number of factors, but where its manifestation is at odds with design and functionality, then there is obviously something amiss.
I don't know where you got that anybody thinks marriage was constituted to infringe on anyone's rights. If it was then gay people should not be clamouring to be included. You keep bringing up procreative coupling like it is the only reason people get married. I have said before that not all people get married to have children. Think of a menopausal 60 year old woman getting married to a 72 year old man. Yes, it happens. Clearly, their chances at having children is tending towards zero so their reason for getting married is more love/desire to stay together for the rest of their lives than have kids. Would you say their union is null, since children are not involved?

TV01: I believe I have talked this point to exhaustion. Procreation in principle even if not in practice gives us the essence of marriage and anchors it's societal utility. Even if not in practice, it remains the ideal setting and kids can be adopted. Even if not in practice, it re-enforces the notion. It works perfectly and at minimal cost to and with minimal intervention by society.

Sodomy is all about sex. There are lots of same couple relationships - two brothers or sisters, very good/close friends etc. - who could claim exactly the same arrangement as homosexuals - just without the physical intimacy. We do not say they should be married. Any arrangement they wish to make can be contracted privately. It requires no state intervention as it has little if any societal benefit.
Procreation is not the sole purpose of marriage - you keep carrying it around like a banner when it clearly no longer holds true. In fact, marriage today just for the purpose of having kids is a marriage of convenience - to serve that specific purpose and nothing more. People can procreate without getting married so stop making it like a woman's egg can only be fertilized when she is brandishing a marriage certificate.

Minimal cost to and minimal intervention by society? How much does homosexuality cost society? In modern society, a man and a woman don't necessarily make an ideal setting - alla the drunk man and drug addicted woman I asked you to imagine above. Sound minds make an ideal setting, whether male or female. Afterall, there are kids that grew up in foster care and homes and still turn out fine in spite of not having a defined mother and father.

Sodomy is all about sex - true. But homosexuality and sodomy are two different things; you're just interchanging them to suit your purposes so you can score points. Sodomy is about sex. So is missionary style and all the other styles straight couples engage in. Heterosexuality and homosexuality are about relationships, so you should get that straight.[/quote]As has been pointed out here, incest is a grey area. If i remember my bible correctly, Lot's daughters had children by him. I don't remember anywhere the bible said God punished them for that. That is clearly incest. A lot of cultures have supported incestuous relationships. So I can't comment on incest. If I come across an incestuous couple, I would only voice personal reservations about their choice; not try to get the government to lock them up as far as they are not infringing anybody's fundamental rights.

Ha - talk about societal benefits! Think armed robbers, rapists, serial killers, assassins - name them. They came from the union of a man and woman, didn't they? What kind of benefits have they accrued to humanity? So don't make it look like straight relationships only produce positive benefits.

Besides, i keep asking the question, to help those poor orphan kids out there have proper homes, how many have you adopted?
Christianity Etc › Re: Let's Talk About Gay Rights - From A Religio-Philosophical Perspective by itsrandeeboi(m): 12:44pm On Dec 31, 2013
I've been offline for a while so i've not been able to continue with the discussion but i'm here now so i might as well reply where applicable:

TV01: Let me start from the end. No, I don't think that I have or should have more rights than a "gay person", Neither do I think that just because a person practices a certain type of intimate behaviour, he/she should be ascribed a set of rights over and above my rights or generic human rights.

And I laugh at the hypocrisy that says rights should be ascribed to "gays" on the basis of their proclivities, but not to others on the basis of theirs; to wit polygamists, zoophiliacs, paedophiles etc.

There are in truth only human rights, applicable to all. I would make exceptions for the vulnerable, i.e. children, the disabled, but other than that no "special or protected interests". The whole notion of gay rights is simply a contrivance to impose the perversion.

And the point is consistently overlooked, that whatever the legalities or definition, there are some who will always count sodomy as as abominable, deviant, degrading, immoral or simply disordered. You cannot re-define or legislate away issues of morality, which is what is being attempted here.
If you want to tow that line, why not have this; there will always be whites who think blacks are monkeys, wild animals, slaves, not good enough to marry white people, less than human and simply not normal or civilized. Should we, on the basis of the fact that these people will always exist, return to slavery and returning to the jim crow laws that came before civil rights gained enough strength?

TV01: It does not fall at all, let alone flat. Neither has your rebuttal actually said anything. If something is re-defined in such a way that it loses it's essence, it's not being simply re-defined, it's being destroyed. A re-definition should not vary anything that is fundamental to what a thing is in essence, otherwise it ceases to be, or is rendered useless.

So far example "adulthood", being mentally and physically able to engage as an adult is it's essence, being impossible before puberty. If we move the adulthood bar to a pre-pubertal age, we render the term useless.

Re-defining marriage to include a pair that are 1. not opposite sex, 2. cannot procreate in principle or in practice means it is no longer marriage as we have historically and anthropologically understood it. It becomes something else. And for everyone. To make it work for "gays", it ceases to work for anyone. Rights? No, it's about redefining the immoral as moral.

The concepts of adultery and consummation have also to be stripped out of marriage' essence, as both are simply nonsensical in a same-sex pairing.

And from a canonical Christian perspective, whether you redefine (marriage), or recreate (civil unions), sin remains sin.
It still falls flat. A re-defining marriage to include homosexual relationships does not not mean straight people can't get married any more, so your point is very moot. The basics still won't changed; marriage will still be the legal union of two people for whatever purposes they deem fit, be it child bearing, love or anything else. Afterall, people get married for visas now, don't they? I don't see you guys complaining over that, when you consider that they have no plans to have children or even stay together. Redefining the word marriage makes it include a wider bracket not exclude the initial one it covered.

As for adultery and consummation, those still apply. What would you define adultery and consummation as? Do they apply to only one gender or to both? If they apply only to one gender, then yes, it could become nonsensical in the homosexual context but if not, them it still applies either way. The rules governing adultery and consummation are drawn by the fact there is a legal union i.e marriage not the sex of the people involved. Besides, both are basically moral concepts and barely have real bearing on legality.

You can't look at it from only a canonical christian point of view; not everybody are christians.

TV01: 1. An arrangement where two people who just "want to spend the rest of their lives together", needs no legal codification or societal endorsement. If that's all it was, we would not have evolved anything even like marriage. We - being society - take an interest in this type of arrangement solely due to the procreative possibility. That's the whole point.

2. Even if there are no offspring - by design or default - the principle holds, an opposite sex pairing is the basis for procreation and the best setting for nurturing children.

3. Orphaned or abandoned/unwanted kids would be best served by placing them with a male/female pairing in every which way. We should encourage and if expedient incentivise this. Neither bad opposite couples or demoniosing them, makes a case for same-sex ones.

4. You may ask whatever you please, it changes the basis of this discussion not a wit. Two fathers or two mothers in lieu of an opposite sex parent in not "normal".
1) If our sole interest in the marriage arrangement is solely due to the procreative possibility, then a man and woman who want to have children don't need legal codification either and as such, don't have to get married to do so, afterall, all they need is to have sex and voila, here come the kids. You also realize that a man does not need to have sex with a woman any more to procreate and so, as far as he can get a donor for an egg, he can always have a kid, without even having to meet said donor. The legal codification is to make the union legit in the eyes of the law and bestow on the spouses the rights that accrue to them as legal partners in the union.

What something originates as does not mean what it will always be. Ask those that subscribe to the evolution theory and you will hear that we human beings haven't always been like this. Marriage, like government, education, health care and nearly every other institution you can think of may have started with very basic functions that have been expanded to encompass so much more than was previously thought of.

2) What does it matter if an opposite sex pairing is the basis for procreation or a good setting for children's upbringing WHEN THERE ARE NO CHILDREN TO TALK OF? Marriage is one thing; child birth and upbringing is quite another. You can do either without the other and you wouldn't be breaking the law, so don't make it look like you have to be married to have kids and bring them up properly. The much lauded Ben Carson was the product of a single parent home which clearly lacks one of the oh-so-important parts of the ideal home setting and it appears to me he is doing just fine.

3) Says who? So, tell me, if you were an orphan about to be adopted into a family, and you are given two options; a drunkard, abusive man who beats up his wife and kids with his drug addled wife who half the time doesn't know what is going on around her AND a gay couple that have no such issues and will love you and give you everything that a child needs for optimum growth and development. Now you are telling me you will pick the abusive family JUST BECAUSE THERE IS A MAN AND WOMAN THERE? I don't need to rehash this, no matter how you incentivise it, a straight couple will always be likely to want their won kids. Not many woman want to be saddled with another woman's kid. So I don't the issue with allowing a gay couple to adopt them and give them a life and opportunity they would otherwise be denied.

4) Let's take up your "normal" and see how well it stands. Think of effeminate guys or siamese/conjoined twins. They are not normal right? But who created them? God, right? So, if they are not normal, then God made a mistake, didn't he? And it is now we humans that have to correct God's mistake, right? But if you say no, God didn't make a mistake, then why are we trying to get the effeminate guy to act manly or to separate the conjoined twins? Aren't they "normal" by God's standards; the person who created them? So who now decides what is normal; we or God?

Christianity Etc › Re: Let's Talk About Gay Rights - From A Religio-Philosophical Perspective by itsrandeeboi(m): 9:31am On Dec 25, 2013
okeyxyz: I don't think the issue here is about denying anybody their rights. Rather it is a question of re-defining marriage. In this case, secular matters are subject to redefinitions at all times, so if marriage is redefined to mean the legal union of two or more adults regardless of sexuality, then that would be the marriage that the law recognizes. I stress that this is a legal marriage, not a christian(I speak as a christian) marriage, so let it not be that somebody goes to court to try and force the honoring/celebration of homosexual marriages in churches or any activity pertaining to church doctrine. A church of course being the voluntary association of believers of the christian doctrine in this case.
Bless you, you totally understand this. Where I would have a problem is if churches are being forced to wed people they are clearly against wedding. Churches have their own beliefs as regards the issue. Since all the gay people want to get married want is a legal union, then I think courts can very well provide that.

Another rubbish is the claim that sexuality should b basesd on religion! Peple existed and had s.ex before religion. It is a very wrong idea to use religion to dictate sexuality- which religion and which interpretation or sect of religion?
Dude you clearly did not get me at all. Get out of condemn mode.

How many gay Nigerians do you know that want to get married, ehn? Has gay people wanting to marry ever been an issue in Nigeria? Did our legislature pass those laws because they were some gay peeps who were protesting being denied their right to get married. In fact, if I can get anything from Nigerian gays, it's that they probably want to just be left alone.

And I never said religion should dictate sexuality; go and read again, Mr Logicboy! I said it shouldn't be the place of law to decide wether a certain sexuality is right or not seeing as the matter is really a religious (not even moral) issue. As far as there was reasoned consent from both parties, both parties are sound of mind and of age to give said reasoned consent and there was no breach off anybody's fundamental human rights and no threat to national security, the tenets for legal sex have been cleared. It is up to each religion to preach against it as their beliefs follow but not force such opinions down public throats.
Christianity Etc › Re: Let's Talk About Gay Rights - From A Religio-Philosophical Perspective by itsrandeeboi(m): 2:41am On Dec 25, 2013
Here's my personal take on this issue. I don't think the issue of sexuality should really be a legal issue. It should be religious and should be left for religion to speak against. What two people do in the privacy of their bedrooms and who they choose to fall in love with should not be government's problem. The primary function of the law is the protection of rights and that gives the following criteria for acceptable sex: 1) that there is mutual consent and neither party was coerced into giving consent. 2) that both parties are sound enough by age and mental capacity to reason properly and give reasoned consent. 3) That said act does not infringe on another person's fundamental human rights and is in no way a threat to national security (the sex has to be really something to threaten national security!)

Funny thing is that I don't remember when any gay person in Nigeria ever wanted to get married. Even if president Jonathan tomorrow signs a bill permitting gay couples in Nigeria to marry, I don't think we will see any gay weddings. What we have failed to realise from history is that the moment you start trying to put certain people down who weren't even clamoring for anything in the first place, that's when they get exactly what they want and more. Ask white supremacists and male chauvinists in the US about black people and women suffrage.

TV01: Davidlyan hello, hope you are well. I was so sure that you were away "wifing" and would return with testimony. How far?

@All, I'm going to pivot my input off this point made by DL;

Firstly we should ask what is marriage? And secondly what constitutes a right, or at least this particular one?

Simply put, marriage is and has always been the commitment between a man and a woman. It was never ever predicated on one's "sexual orientation" - whatever that is claimed to be, or however you "self-identify".
This point falls flat when you begin to consider other things which have had their definitions modified over time. For instance, parenthood. Before adoptions became a thing, parenthood was generally only attributable to people with their own biological children. Or adulthood which has had ages modified to fit whatever society feels is the requirement for adulthood at the time.
Definitions change as humans change.

TV01: "Homosexuals are not denied the same right as any other person - the right to marry a member of the opposite sex.

Anthropologically, there would be no need for marriage if children - the natural outcome - were not in view. To extend "marriage" as we know it to homosexuals, we have to change what marriage is. It becomes merely the validation of desire between adults (which as has been pointed out is hypocrisy by Western nations as Polygamy is consensual, but they are not clamouring for that - yet?). We don't need to enshrine that in law or institutionalise it. If that was all marriage represented, it simply wouldn't have come into existence.

It also denies children the right to be raised by their biological parents, which is codified by the UN. Rights jam rights?
Okay. So if you take away childbirth and having children from a married couple, what are you left with? Two people who just want to spend the rest of their lives together, recognized by the law as being in a union (and where applicable, religion). You also realise there are heterosexual marriages where the couple do not plan on having any kiss. Forget that long story of kids and their right to be raised by their biological parents because you're making it sound like homosexuals raid the homes of heterosexual couples for their kids. What about the kids at orphanages and motherless babies' homes? One set do not have parents. The others are not wanted by said biological parents. Most straight couples are too caught up trying to have their own kids to try adopting these children you are defending so assiduously. May I ask how many orphans/parent-less kids you have given a home? But when a gay couple comes to adopt them and give them one, you deny them hope of something as close to normal family life as they could possibly ever get?

TV01: Firstly here, true faith colours and motivates everything one does, to divorce one's faith from ones politics, is to divorce oneself from said faith. Please take stock here. And the Christian worldview has as much right to inform public policy as any other.

Your last point is contradictory. If homosexuals have the right to marriage and kids, surely they have the right to ram it down throats exactly the same way heterosexuals do. This testifies to conflict in your position?
Really? So if a muslim president is elected next in Nigeria and he says it is in our National interests to pray to Allah by twelve pm every day, to be enforced by law enforcement, would you support him on the grounds that faith informs everything everyone does and can't be divorced from one's politics?

That last paragraph is actually you getting it wrong. Homosexuals cannot ask heterosexuals to stop taking a straight lifestyle down their throats then turn around to ram their own lifestyle down straight people's throats. You also realize they are a really small minority compared to the total population and will always be. Like physically deformed people are a minority against fully fit people.

TV01: Now to close. The terms "gay", "homosexual", "heterosexual" are pretty much fallacious as currently used. Gay as we all know is an usurped word. Homosexual and heterosexual are neologisms, coined barely a century (or maybe 2 ago).
You don't want to go into the number of everyday defining words that were coined less than a century ago. Much of ancient speak involved describing things as against giving them actual names. Same could apply to homosexuality which has been proven not to be a modern invention. Besides, if we are to go by the Bible, homosexuality was a huge thing in Sodom. So they must have had a name for it then. Sodomy, of cours, is also a modern word.

TV01: There are not two distinct species of human being i.e. homosexual and heterosexual. Functionally all humans - with the exception of a few outlying and tragic instances, are functionally the same, the only distinction being male or female. The real distinction is those who practice normal unitive/procreative sex, as obvious and evidenced by function and outcome and those who practice a deviant form which possesses neither of those qualities or outcome. It is rightly called sodomy.

Further it has been shown that this "practice", is not biologically pre-determined (any more than any other sexual deviancy). Regardless of that fact, indulging in sodomy is a choice.
Functionally, all humans are the same. Practically, we are as diverse as the sands on the sea shore. All humans have two hands, right? Doesn't mean all humans use both hands for carpentry. We all see through our two eyes but we do not perceive the same things. Human beings were not made in black and white as even our races show. There are grey areas we do not understand and we shouldn't just disparage because they are not like us and we don't understand what they do as far as they are not infringing on our basic rights.

Nobody has shown that sexuality is by choice or not. I don't think anybody woke up one morning and chose to be straight so saying the same of a gay person would be unfair. It is still a matter for debate (except you are reading Chibuihem Amahala's project report which was laughed at by even homophobes)

TV01: Marriage has a definite purpose. Varying it to validate deviant sexual practice is deleterious, through whatever perspective one views it. In regards to my earlier poser of rights jam rights, it's not. It's really adult desires trumping childrens right.

No rights are being denied anyone, what is being sought is endorsement of deviant behaviour - by legally codifying and enforcing a gutted form of marriage - and ultimately silencing of any dissenting voices.

Please take heed, while you are busy divorcing your faith and politics, they will try and forcibly separate you from your faith.

Merry x-mas

TV
So what is marriage's definite function and what in this function cannot apply to homosexual couples? If you bring up child bearing, then a heterosexual union where the couple have no biological children and don't want to adopt is invalid, isn't it?

I would like to ask you, do you think you have more rights than a gay person?
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: 2013/2104 Season Winter Champions For Europe’s Top Leagues And Predictions. by itsrandeeboi(op): 1:25am On Dec 25, 2013
Italian Serie A:

Winter Champions: Juventus (unsurpisingly)

Runner-up: AS Roma

The History: Juventus have finished as winter champions sixteen times in their history and have gone on to win the league thirteen of those sixteen times. AS Roma, of course, are quite familiar with not being winter champions but have gone on to win the league several times even while not being winter champions for those seasons.

The Prediction: Juventus is very likely to retain the league with little trouble and if they lose it to any of their title rivals, it would be more likely down to their own failures than to their opponent’s strengths. AS Roma and Napoli WILL provide a strong test on the way though but I expect the Bianconeri to see of their challenge to clinch this seaosn’s title.

German Bundesliga:

Winter Champions: Bayern Munich (unsurprisingly too)

Runner-up: Bayer Leverkusen (surprisingly)

The History: Bayern are no strangers to being winter champions and going on to eventually clinch the title. However, so are Borussia Dortmund and in the last few years, both clubs have been both winter champions and eventual league winners.

The Prediction: Barring the most epic collapse in world football history, Bayern will walk away with the league title this season. They are seven points clear at the top of the table and still have a game in hand (which we all expect them to win) so there’s that. I expect Borussia Dortmund to recover from their surprising slump to finish the season strongly. They currently lie in 4th place, eleven points behind Bayern Munich (potentially 14 pints) and behind both Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach. Second place might be a bit of a battle this season.

French Ligue 1:

Winter Champions: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)

Runner-up: AS Monaco

The History: Well, as far as the midway point in the season in France and history go, I am pretty uneducated on that subject. I would like anyone who knows more about it to supply the stats.

The Prediction: From the start of the season, I predicted that the battle for the league title would be a close run race between PSG and Monaco; and so it has turned put. What I didn’t see is Lille stealing a march on the other sides in the league like Lyon and Marseille to position themselves in third, four points behind leaders, PSG and firmly in title contention. Definitely, one of PSG or Monaco will win the league. I tip PSG to win as they have had more time to play as a team than Monaco and will very well get through the fatigue periods of the season. However, history does not favour them as no French league champions have won the title back to back since Lyon relinquished the title in the 2007-2008 season. Incidentally, no team has also finished second back-to-back in the same time frame.

And that’s it; the winter champions for the 2013-2014 season and my predictions on how the season will finish. Have a different opinion? Add your comment!

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › 2013/2104 Season Winter Champions For Europe’s Top Leagues And Predictions. by itsrandeeboi(op): 1:21am On Dec 25, 2013
So Christmas and the end of the year is upon us and, at the same time, the season is almost at its half-way point (already at it in some leagues). I’ll just list the teams who are currently top of the log at Christmas and how historically, they fared after being top at the end of the year in previous years:

English/Barclays Premier League:

Christmas Champions (There is still a match left in the EPL before the year ends so we can’t say who the winter champions are yet as Arsenal can still take top spot going into the new year if Liverpool lose to city on Thursday and Arsenal win against West Ham): Liverpool FC.

Runner-up: Arsenal FC

The History: In the premier league era (1992 to date), no team has ever won the premier league being lower than sixth position on Christmas day, so Manchester United fans might have cause for despair as to their team’s chances of retaining the league title this season. Arsenal, who must have been sore to see Liverpool leapfrog them into top spot on the log can take solace from history as Arsenal have never won the premiership in modern era after being first at Christmas day. The three times they have won the Barclay’s Premier League have seen them in second place twice and in sixth place once so they can take some faith from that. Liverpool have never won the EPL in modern times so they might as well disregard history and give the title a shot.

End of Season Predictions: Well, at the start of the season (on another blog), I predicted that City, Man United and Chelsea would struggle for consistency (which they have) and that it was Arsenal and Liverpool’s chance to take (which they are doing). I predict a heart-stopping finish to the season with at least five clubs jostling for the top four spots in the EPL. Arsenal, Liverpool or City to win the league.

Spanish La Liga:

Winter Champions: FC Barcelona

Runner-up: Athletico Madrid

The History: I’ve been trying to get detailed stats on how Barcelona has fared on being Champions at the winter break but in recent times, Barcelona has gone on to win the league title much of the times they were top of the league at Christmas. Not that Madrid haven’t found themselves behind at mid-season and still went on to win the league before so they would be hoping to pull that off this season.

The Prediction: Madrid are still fairly inconsistent as far as local results are concerned and seem to fixed on European attentions, the result being that not just Barcelona, but Athletico Madrid are ahead of them on the log. I predict that they longer they progress in Europe, the more ground they will give to Barcelona. Athletico Madrid might finally finish ahead of Real for the first time in quite a while and I predict them to keep up the tempo all the way to the end of the season. La Liga this year is more likely to be a three horse race than the two of previous years.

So AVB got the sack last week. And while Tottenham were getting hammered by Liverpool on his last match, Adebayor and Assou-Ekotto were taking pictures:

Juuuust chilling....

After the match, Tottenham fans went crazy and were baying for their blood; asking that neither player set foot again on a pitch in or outside England in the spurs jersey again. Even fans of other clubs joined in calling them the worst professionals ever and calling Adebayor football’s biggest mercenary (which isn’t true. That honor belongs to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Adebayor sits in second place) and railing against all the cash that was being paid to these useless African players.

Well guess whose two goals helped Tottenham to their win against Southampton this last weekend?

Last week when the whole furore was still at fever pitch at both players (Adebayor suffering more of the insults) I did point out that it was never in AVB’s best interests to keep one of the team’s better strikers on the fringes. Adebayor has never been the loyal kind, not by a stretch, so I’m surprised spurs fans were expecting him to be. However, hate him or live him, that guy knows how to be a striker in England unlike, I dunno, a certain Roberto Soldado who hasn’t done much in front of opponent’s goal posts asides taking penalties. Since the penalty figures for Spurs had dwindled, so had Soldado looked more and more ordinary. It was really baffling that spurs took so much chasing him, only to have him pushed to the outer edges.

AVB won’t have the opportunity to redeem himself as he has already been shown the door. Adebayor has, of course, as he is still at the club. And he is already grabbing it by the horns.

The gulf has been widened a lot over the years. Be rest assured, most people are not like that in real life. To some, is fun and it is a way of learning one or two things from both sides.

I am currently under ban by Afam, I careless though. If the moDs are really interested in the peace, they should create a thread for such.
The thing is this; when I was little, I used to engage in silly arguments like this. But growing up, I realized that it was all pointless; it didn't achieve anything, it certainly didn't make any of us better than the other person and, at the end, it would only make some people subconsciously bear a grudge against someone else for a really pointless reason. I believe that, for mature people, there are much more salient and important discussions to pursue than "my tribe is better than yours". I mean, if I ever catch my child engaging in such a pointless waste of time, I would mete out sever punishment.

I don't mind friendly jibes at each other's tribes; that is allowed. But what goes on here is beyond that. It may just be harmless fun for you but just know that someone else you don't know is taking it pretty serious
