BusinessResearch-proven Tricks That Make You Seem Smarter Than You Are by ItuExchange(op): 9:30am On Apr 25, 2016
It’s great to be smart, but intelligence is a hard thing to pin down. In many cases, how smart people think you are is just as important as how smart you actually are.

“I not only use all the brains that I have, but all that I can borrow.” -Woodrow Wilson
As it turns out, intelligence only explains about 20% of how you do in life; much of the other 80% comes down to emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is a skill that’s so important that 90% of top performers in the workplace have high EQs and people with high EQs make $28,000 more annually than those with low EQs.

The hallmark of emotional intelligence is self-awareness, which involves not just knowing how you are but also how other people perceive you. People with high emotional intelligence are masters of influence—they’re skilled at altering their behavior to make the most of a given situation.

You might not be able to alter your genetics, but there are some proven strategies that can help you appear to be smarter. Some of these strategies seem arbitrary, but research shows they make a massive difference. That makes this good information to have, especially when you need to sway someone to your way of thinking.

Use a middle initial. John F. Kennedy. Franklin D. Roosevelt. It turns out there might be a reason that so many people who hold a prominent place in history used a middle initial. Not only does using a middle initial enhance your perceived social status, it also boosts expectations of intelligence capacity and performance. In one study, participants were asked to read and rate Einstein’s essay on the theory of relativity, with authorship being attributed to either David Clark, David F. Clark, David F. P. Clark, or David F. P. R. Clark. Not only did David F. Clark get higher ratings than David Clark, David F. P. R. Clark outdid them all. In another study, participants were asked to choose team members. For academic competitions, people who used middle initials were selected more frequently than those who didn’t. (It was quite a different story for athletic competitions.) So, if you want a quick perceived IQ boost, start using that middle initial.

Make graphs. Research conducted at Cornell suggests that people are more likely to trust a source if it contains graphs. In one of the Cornell studies, participants read a document on the effectiveness of a new cold medication. One report contained a graph; the other didn’t. Other than that, they were exactly the same. Still, 96% of the participants who read the report with a graph believed the claims, while only 67% percent of those who read the document without a graph thought the same. So, next time you create a document, stick in a graph. It doesn’t have to be complex; it just has to be accurate.

Skip that drink. And that’s not just because people tend to do stupid things when they’ve been drinking. A joint study conducted by the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania revealed that merely seeing someone hold a drink is enough to make them seem less intelligent. It’s not that we assume less intelligent people are more likely to drink; it’s that the perceived correlation between drinking and cognitive impairment is so strong that we assume impairment even if there isn’t any. For example, although job candidates frequently think that ordering a glass of wine over a dinner interview will make them appear intelligent and worldly, it actually makes them come across as less intelligent and less hirable. There’s even a name for it: the “imbibing idiot bias.”

Believe in yourself. Nothing projects intelligence quite like confidence. When you believe in yourself, it shows, and research shows that believing in yourself improves your performance on cognitive tasks. Self-doubt, on the other hand, impairs your performance. What’s worse is that other people pick up on this doubt, which makes you appear less intelligent to them. If you want people to believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.

Write simply. If you’re really smart, you shouldn’t have to use big words to broadcast it. True intelligence speaks for itself, so you don’t have to show off your impressive vocabulary. In addition, you always run the chance of being wrong. Using a big word incorrectly makes you look, well, not so smart. So, if you want to appear more intelligent, stop studying the dictionary and just focus on communicating effectively.

Speak expressively. Communication expert Leonard Mlodinow makes the case that even if two people say exactly the same thing, the one who says it most expressively will be perceived as being smarter. "If two speakers utter exactly the same words, but one speaks a little faster and louder and with fewer pauses and greater variation in volume, that speaker will be judged to be more energetic, knowledgeable, and intelligent,” Mlodinow said. If you want to come across as more intelligent, modulate your speech by varying your pitch, volume, speed, and energy level.

Look 'em in the eye. We know we’re supposed to do this anyway—it’s good manners, right? That’s true, but it also makes you look smarter. In a study conducted at Loyola University, participants who intentionally managed their eye contact scored significantly higher on perceived intelligence.

Wear nerd glasses. Did your mom ever tell you to be nice to the nerds, because you’ll probably be working for them someday? As usual, mom was onto something. Research shows that people wearing glasses—especially thick, full-framed ones—are perceived as being more intelligent. So, if you want to seem smarter (when you’re giving a presentation, perhaps?), leave the contacts at home and wear your glasses.

Keep pace with the crowd. I mean this one literally. I know it may sound silly, but research conducted at Boston University shows that it’s true. It’s called the “timescale bias,” and it refers to our tendency to attribute greater intelligence—based on mental attributes like consciousness, awareness, and intention—to people who do things at about the same speed as everyone else. If you want to look smarter, you need to stop dawdling, but you also need to stop scurrying around like some crazed robot.

Dress for success. This one should be no surprise. Extensive research shows that how you dress affects how people see you. Dressing well makes you seem more intelligent, and showing skin makes you seem less intelligent, as it directs people’s attention to your body rather than to your mind. But did you know that how you dress also affects your performance? A recent study by Northwestern University found that making people wear lab coats improved their performance in tasks that required intelligence and concentration.

Bringing It All Together
Intelligence (IQ) is fixed at an early age. You might not be able to change your IQ, but you can definitely alter the way people perceive you. When it comes to succeeding in the real world, perception is half the battle.

What are some other things that make people seem intelligent? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Foreign AffairsWhy Does Israel Continue To Win Their Wars When They Are Outnumbered by ItuExchange(op): 10:40pm On Apr 24, 2016
Why does Israel continue to win their wars when they are outnumbered fifteen to one?

I toured an IDF air base last November. They had these proprietary high tech simulators, so the pilot had to fly against a computer. Then they had to fly against each other, because humans are more unpredictable than a computer

That was before actual flying time. You left with the feeling that these people are prepared for anything. So thorough preparation for every contingency is a key

I liked everyone else's answers and enjoyed reading them..especially since Israel cannot afford to lose any war

There is an X factor as well. The Israeli army is led from the front whereas most of the worlds armies are led from the back

In other words, the planners and higher ranks lead the army into battle. Thus, you have better strategy and morale versus the Arab armies where the lower ranks follow orders

During Entebbe the only person to die was the planner...all the others survived and were rescued....

That mindset has helped Israel fight at a much higher level than their opponents

Foreign AffairsWhat Will Happen If A Country Tried To Invade/declared War On Switzerland? by ItuExchange(op): 10:29pm On Apr 24, 2016
During WW2 Hitler had plans to invade Switzerland: 21 in total and each times his generals had to talk him out of them. He would have find himself paralyzed in a long war with one of the smallest country of Europe as all of the tunnels and bridges of the country had been mined. While the German initial plans foresaw 21 German divisions being used, according to Operation Tannenbaum, 11 German divisions and roughly 15 more Italian divisions were prepared to enter Switzerland involving up to half a million German & Italian soldiers for the invasion and a minimum of 200,000 soldiers would have been based permanently on the Swiss territory while they would still be continuously targeted by the Swiss guerrilla resistance. The Supreme High Command of the German Army (OKH - Oberkommando des Heeres) was expecting over 200,000 casualties on their combined end.

In June 1940 during six days of aerial battles, eleven German aircraft were downed, with a loss of two Swiss aircraft and three airmen killed.

In addition a total of 1,570 American airmen were interned in Switzerland for violating our airspace. They were never officially recognized as prisoners of war because Switzerland was not at war with the United States. On April 30, 2014 the Pentagon awarded medals to 143 of them.

Recently Switzerland has reformed its military and until recently the country could have mobilized 400,000 soldiers in 24 hours, even if the whole transportation infrastructure would have come to a complete halt. During your military service you are trained to walk a distance of 50km with all of your equipment and on average the whole company covers that distance in somewhere between 6 to 8 hours. Once you finish your instruction school you go back home with your weapon and come back every year for a 3-weeks service until you are 40-years old. The mobilization order would have a location you have to go to within a 50km distance from where you live. Since that reform the Swiss army has been cut in half. Nonetheless you had in 2009 available for military service age 16 to 49: 1,852,580 males + 1,475,993 females according to Wikipedia (Military of Switzerland) to kick whomever's ass.

The Fass or Stgw 90 which we have to keep home with us.

The country is mountainous and we take good advantage of that geography to defend ourselves. Our pilots are trained to land on highways

and our mountains are full of tunnels where we can hide these jets and all sorts of other weapons. Switzerland is unique in having enough nuclear fallout shelters to accommodate its entire population , should they ever be needed. Since the 1960s construction began for radiation and blast shelters that can survive one to three bars of pressure from a nuclear explosion. In 2006, there were 300,000 shelters in Swiss dwellings, institutions and hospitals, as well as 5,100 public shelters, providing protection for a total of 8.6 million individuals – a coverage of 114 per cent.

And we are trained to become yetis if necessary

Our Mountain Service Forces are obliged to participate to the prestigious annual "Patrouille des Glaciers" race (2014 attendance 5,400 racers)

So good luck for any candidate and while the invading army would have to deal with logistics to bring any food for their soldiers, our caves are full of chocolates and cheese. While our toblerone's are not all chocolate made The Toblerone Line, One Sweet Barrier.

In 2003 Swiss citizens voted for Switzerland to become a member of the Schengen treaty therefore allowing to reduce military spending. If in 1979 military spending represented 1.9% of GDP today it is only 0.7% as the neighboring countries do not represent any potential threat. The reform allowed to cut the military personnel from 524,000 to 220,000 and free up some cash to upgrade equipment.

Since then the Swiss have been redefining the mission statement for their armed defense. The army does not take part in armed conflicts in other countries, but it does participate in international peacekeeping missions. Switzerland is part of the NATO Partnership for Peace program. From 1996 to 2001, the Swiss Army was present in Bosnia and Herzegovina with headquarters in Sarajevo. Its mission, part of the Swiss Peacekeeping Missions, was to provide logistic and medical support to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), protection duties and humanitarian demining. The mission was named SHQSU, standing for Swiss Headquarters Support Unit to BiH. It was composed of 50 to 55 elite Swiss soldiers under contract for six to 12 months. None of the active soldiers were armed during the duration of the mission. The Swiss soldiers were recognized among the other armies present on the field by their distinctive yellow beret. The SHQSU is not the same as the more publicized Swisscoy, which is the Swiss Army Mission to Kosovo. Switzerland is part of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC), which was created to monitor the armistice between North and South Korea. Since the responsibilities of the NNSC have been much reduced over the past few years, only five people are still part of the Swiss delegation, which is located near the Korean DMZ (Source: Wikipedia).

As Igor Markov correctly points out threats would be from a different nature such as economic sanctions. In 2008 Swiss authorities arrested in their hotel room Hannibal Gaddafi (son of the former Libyan leader) and his wife on charges of bodily harm, coercion and threats made to their own personnel they flew with while visiting Switzerland. The charges were later dropped but relations between the two countries soured and in 2009 Libyan authorities arrested two Swiss nationals in retaliation.

Recently the Rand Corporation has been citing in one of their research documents http://www.rand.org/content/dam/... the "Swiss approach" contained in a book authored by Swiss Army major Hans von Dach "Der Totale Widerstand—Kleinkriegsanleitung für Jedermann" [Total Resistance—Small War Instructions for Everyone].

Key elements of the "Swiss approach"

can be categorized according to three lines of effort:

preparing for infrastructure denial
preparing for unconventional military resistance operations
preparing for civilian resistance activities

CareerDon't Pick A Job. Pick A Boss by ItuExchange(op): 8:01am On Apr 24, 2016
“Don’t pick a job. Pick a Boss. Your first boss is the biggest factor in your career success. A boss who doesn’t trust you won’t give you opportunities to grow.” ~William Raduchel.

This is challenging because the process we use to find meaningful work is designed to work the opposite way; the boss picks you. More often than not, you only talk to your boss during the interview process, which is a poor predictor of what he/she will actually be like. By focusing on who your boss will be above most other criteria (e.g. total compensation, responsibility, advancement opportunities, location) changes how you pursue jobs and how happy you’ll be once you select one.

According to Forbes article, more than 2 million people are quitting their jobs each month. More than 74% of people would consider finding a new job. And, 32% are actively looking for their next opportunity. From a high level:

A good boss in a mediocre company will protect you and support you.
A bad boss in a good company will frustrate and demoralize you.
A good boss in a good company will unlock your potential.
Traits of a good boss: drives retention, delegates authority, trustworthy, is a servant/transformational leader, interested in doing what’s right, consistent in decision-making, and is empathetic.

Traits of a bad boss: drives turnover, micromanages others and processes, instills fear, authoritarian leader, interested in being right, inconsistent in decision-making, and is cold/self-focused.

So, how do you find a good boss? First and foremost, understand yourself. Have you established your personal intention? If so, what is your ambition statement (what you need to achieve in the next 3 – 5 years)? By determining a clear path for what you want to achieve, you can conduct a gap analysis of your skills and better determine how a particular boss can coach and mentor you to your goals.

Secondly, picking a tremendous boss demands that you have a strong network. By cultivating relationships with professionals in your field, you can share notes on the bosses you’ve worked for or heard about. This does take time and research, but knowing who the good managers are and seeking them out is probably the best predictor of a prosperous career.

Last, conduct informational interviews with the potential bosses before you actually have the chance to work with them. By treating him or her to coffee or lunch, learning more about what makes him or her tick, you can establish a rapport and see how you can generate value for him or her. You will also learn how the person may be able to support you as you achieve your life’s intent.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Do yourself a favor; search for jobs with purpose and choose your boss before your title or company.

The career and life of your dreams will evolve organically from there.

Christianity EtcChapters And Verses—who Put Them In The Bible? by ItuExchange(op): 7:49am On Apr 24, 2016
IMAGINE that you are a Christian living in the first century. Your congregation has just received a letter from the apostle Paul. As you listen to it being read, you notice that Paul often quotes from “the holy writings,” that is, the Hebrew Scriptures. (2 Timothy 3:15) ‘I would really like to see the text he is quoting from,’ you say to yourself. But that would not have been easy. Why not?

NO CHAPTERS OR VERSES

Consider what the manuscripts of “the holy writings” that were available in Paul’s day looked like. One is shown here—a portion of the book of Isaiah from the Dead Sea Scrolls. What do you see? Solid blocks of text! No punctuation. And none of the numbered chapters and verses that we use today.

Bible writers did not divide their message into chapters or verses. They just wrote down the whole message God gave them so that the readers could also get the whole message, not just tiny parts of it. Is that not what you want when you get an important letter from someone you love? You read the whole letter, not just bits and pieces of it.

The lack of chapters or verses, however, did pose a problem. Paul could only identify his quotations with such words as “just as it is written” or “just as Isaiah foretold.” (Romans 3:10; 9:29) And it would have been difficult to find those quotations unless you were very familiar with all “the holy writings.”

Furthermore, those “holy writings” were not one simple message from God. By the end of the first century C.E., they consisted of a collection of 66 separate books! That is why most Bible readers today are glad to have numbered chapters and verses that help them find specific information, such as the many quotations in Paul’s letters.

‘So,’ you might ask, ‘who put those chapter and verse numbers in the Bible?’

WHO ADDED THE CHAPTERS?

English cleric Stephen Langton, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury, is credited with adding the chapter divisions to the Bible. He did this early in the 13th century C.E., when he was a teacher at the University of Paris in France.

Before Langton’s day, scholars had experimented with different ways of dividing the Bible into smaller sections or chapters, mainly, it seems, for reference purposes. You can imagine how much easier it would have been for them to find a passage if they had to search through only one chapter rather than a whole book, such as the book of Isaiah with its 66 chapters.

All of that, however, created a problem. The scholars produced many different and incompatible systems. In one of them, Mark’s Gospel was divided into almost 50 chapters, not the 16 we have now. In Paris in Langton’s day, there were students from many countries, and they brought with them Bibles from their native lands. However, lecturers and students could not share references. Why? Because the chapter divisions in their manuscripts simply did not match.

So Langton developed new chapter divisions. His system “caught the imagination of readers and scribes,” states The Book—A History of the Bible, and it “spread rapidly across Europe.” He gave us the chapter numbering we find in most Bibles today.

WHO ADDED THE VERSES?

Some 300 years later, in the middle of the 16th century, renowned French printer-scholar Robert Estienne made things even easier. His aim was to popularize Bible study. He realized how valuable it would be to have a uniform system of both numbered chapters and numbered verses.

Estienne did not come up with the idea of dividing the Bible text into verses. Others had done that already. Centuries earlier, Jewish copyists, for example, had divided the whole Hebrew Bible, or the part of the Bible commonly called the Old Testament, into verses but not into chapters. Again, as with the development of chapters, there was no uniform system.

Estienne divided the Christian Greek Scriptures, or what is called the New Testament, into a new set of numbered verses and combined them with those already in the Hebrew Bible. In 1553, he published the first complete Bible (an edition in French) with basically the same chapters and verses that most Bibles use today. Some people were critical and said that the verses broke the Bible text into fragments, making it appear as a series of separate and detached statements. But his system was quickly adopted by other printers.

A BOON FOR BIBLE STUDENTS

It seems to be such a simple idea—numbered chapters and verses. This gives each verse in the Bible a unique “address”—like a postal code. True, the chapter and verse divisions are not inspired by God, and they do at times break up the Bible text in strange places. But they make it easier for us to pinpoint quotes and to highlight or share individual verses that may have special meaning for us—just as we highlight expressions or phrases that we specially want to remember in a document or a book.

Convenient though the chapter-and-verse divisions are, always keep in mind the importance of getting the big picture—understanding the whole message God gave. Cultivate the habit of reading the context rather than just isolated verses. Doing so will help you to become more and more familiar with all “the holy writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation.”—2 Timothy 3:15.

HealthHow Can I Removed These Stretch Marks? by ItuExchange(op): 11:54pm On Apr 22, 2016
How can I remove these stretch markets from my body? They’re becoming too embarrassing!

Stretch marks or striae (singular stria) or striae distensae, as they are called in dermatology, are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-color hue. They are caused by tearing of the dermis, which over time may diminish, but will not disappear completely.

Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or rapid weight changes. Stretch marks in most cases may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy, bodybuilding, hormone replacement therapy, etc.[1] Medical terminology for these kinds of markings includes striae atrophicae, vergetures, stria distensae, striae cutis distensae, lineae atrophicae, linea albicante, or simply striae. Stretch marks formed during pregnancy, usually during the last trimester, and usually on the belly, but also commonly occurring on the breasts, thighs, hips, lower back and buttocks, are known as striae gravidarum. (Source: Wikipedia)

Please what can I do to remove the stretch marks?

Are there any drugs or ointment or body lotions that could help?

Is there any recommended specialist center?

I’m highly embarrassed.

SportsCould An MMA Fighter Defeat A Chimpanzee In Hand To Hand Combat? by ItuExchange(op): 11:46pm On Apr 22, 2016
No. Not a chance. Not one man. Not two. Maybe four large men but they'd get the hell bitten and scratched out of them and their only chance would be to sacrifice limb, and probably life of one or two, and use their weight and size, if possible, to immobilize the chimp. Even then I'm not sure they could. They would be severely injured at the very least, and that's assuming four, not one or two. I've spent a fair amount of time observing chimps up close in the wild and my first wife worked with them for years at a major zoo. They will tear you apart. You have no idea of the speed and ferocity with which they attack. Humans are no match for most wild animals. A crocodile can outrun you on land -- yes, a crocodile. A small wild pig can kill you before you know what is happening, and a full grown male chimp, even a female, will tear you apart. It will rip your arms off, tear the skin off your face, scratch your eyes out, tear your windpipe from your neck.... It won't feel your big punches, trust me. The speed and ferocity will terrify you and render you helpless. You will instantly go into a defensive freeze as you try to fend off this unimaginable strength and unrelenting attack. You will shit your pants as you die. Can I make it any clearer than that? Forget your martial arts. Forget your tough guy act. A chimp will expose you as the puny human fraud that you are no matter how well trained you think you might be.

Foreign AffairsDoes NATO Stand A Chance In A War Against Russia? by ItuExchange(op): 8:30pm On Apr 20, 2016
Let's strip away all of the NATO member nations, save one, then let's strip away any mechanized, aerial and naval advantages that this one member nation has over Russia in numbers. In other words, since the United States has 13,892 aircraft (of all types), and Russia has only 3,429, we'll roll America's total aircraft back to meet Russia's deficiency. We'll do the same for aircraft carriers (Russia has one), submarines, attack helicopters and destroyers (Where America's numbers crush Russia's).

I've just rolled back the majority of the total United States military weaponry to match up with Russia's. Now I'll tell you why the United States would still overpower and defeat Russia in a conventional war.

Before I do this, however, I want to take a moment to clarify why the U.S. has looked weaker in recent years than it actually is. We have been fighting an overwhelmingly unconventional war with conventional weapons. There hasn't been a place on a map called Talibania or Al-Qaedaland for the U.S. to attack, and so for years we've had to bring a conventional military to bear on an unconventional target. Tanks, artillery and naval ships aren't ideal tools to snuff out small numbers of fanatics living in cave networks and attacking among non-combatants in towns taken and lost within mere hours.

A conventional war with Russia, however, is precisely what the U.S. Military is designed for, and in that regard, I'll proceed.

The cost to maintain, modify and operate all of this war-ready equipment would pulverize an already weak Russian economy. It costs approximately $70,000.00 to maintain an F-22 Raptor after only one hour of flight time. Here are some other examples of what the cost to maintain aircraft for one hour of flight would be:

B-1B Lancer Bomber - $57,807.00
B-2A Spirit Stealth Bomber - $169,313.00
C-5B Galaxy Cargo Plane — $78,817
E-3B Sentry AWACS Radar Plane — $39,587
F-15C Eagle Fighter — $41,921
F-16C Viper Fighter — $22,514
HH-60G Pave Hawk Helicopter — $24,475
MQ-1B Predator Drone — $3,679
RQ-4B Global Hawk Drone — $49,089
AC-130U Spooky Gunship — $45,986
(I'm using cost data for the United States, because I do not have the precise numbers for costs for Russian aircraft, but given Russia's economic situation, even costs for far less expensive-to-maintain aircraft would be brutal for them economically.)

For every hour of time one of these aircrafts are in use, you can expect maintenance time to be a minimum of five hours (often far more). This enormous maintenance cost goes for all mechanized and naval operations as well, and it certainly goes for any aircraft belonging to the Russian Air Force (see the MiG-29 link below in Sources).

Economics

The United States had one of the fastest recoveries from the global recession of any other nation on Earth (only Germany's was quicker), demonstrating its economic flexibility and overall financial health. The USD is the global standard currency. It's true that, currently, our total debt exceeds our GDP, and it's also true that the total debt looks rather staggering (most of that debt is money we owe ourselves), and it's also true that economists are concerned with our current dependency ratio, but America is still an economic titan with total assets in the neighborhood of $230 trillion. She's far better situated economically upon closer inspection.

Given the tremendous economic struggles Russia has been dealing with due to a foundering economy, global economic sanctions and the plummeting price of oil, their own economic situation is decidedly grim, by comparison. I find it unlikely indeed that they've been able to adequately maintain the vehicle collective that makes up their own military (gaskets dry rot, oil leaks, o-rings crack and fail), so the open question is: what do they even have that is war-ready, and how long can they keep it operational in a theater of war?

EducationWhat Is The Origin Of The Word “motherfucker?” by ItuExchange(op): 8:23pm On Apr 20, 2016
The most straightforward answer is this:

Motherfucker (sometimes abbreviated as mofo, mf, or mf'er) is an English-language vulgarism. While it is usually considered highly offensive, it is rarely used in the literal sense of one who engages in sexual activity with another person's mother, or his or her own mother. Rather, it refers to a mean, despicable, or vicious person, or any particularly difficult or frustrating situation. Alternatively, it can be a term of admiration, for instance in the jazz community.

In North American English, it means a despicable or very unpleasant person or thing.

Jobs/VacanciesWhy Do Companies And Government Institutions Put Age Restrictions/limitations by ItuExchange(op): 8:12pm On Apr 20, 2016
Why Age Discrimination?

If you apply for a job, an employer can ask your date of birth. Why do they use this to discriminate against you? Older people experience most age discrimination. Why?

Is it unlawful for an employer to impose a lower age limit when recruiting, unless this age restriction can be 'objectively justified' or is imposed by law?

What is Objective Justification?
If challenged, Can your employer justify that any direct or indirect discrimination is a 'proportionate' way of achieving a 'legitimate' aim?

Are there laws to prevent age discrimination in the workplace? Are these laws making sure that you are not denied a job, training or a promotion because of your age? Are you also protected from harassment or victimization because of your age?

Why would the government and corporate bodies set age limits for candidates?

Is it a crime for educated people to grow older? Is it a curse to grow older?

Are qualifications not better than age? Is age better than qualifications?

Do I do wrong to lie about my age to get a job?

PropertiesRe: Land Use Charge: Lagos Moves To Seal Properties Of Defaulters … by ItuExchange(m):
These land use charges people are suspected to be scammers, using ruse to siphon money from citizens. I read that ICPC arrested a female civil servant who had 16 houses! See the letter I sent to them:

Land Use Charge 2016 - A Serious Mistake Detected

Dear Sir or Madam:

I want to call your attention to a serious mistake detected in the Land Use Charge you brought to our house at XXXX, XXXXX, Cele Bus Stop, Alimosho

Apart from notice of many unsavory changes in the bill you brought this year, as opposed to the one you brought in the year 2015, I saw that you billed us wrongly!

I paid the bill/charges that were brought to me last year. Please see all evidence attached.

But I was surprised that some balance was carried forward in the bill/charges brought this year. The money carried forward was even bigger than the bill for last year. Please see attached.

Please, why? Could you explain the reason why this is so?

Could this error be fixed quickly while another Land Use Charge is brought to us?

Please reply to this message and fix this issue as soon as possible.

Your numbers are always busy or not picked when called. Plus, I am busy, and I think this issue can be resolved without me visiting your office.

NB: The owner of the house is my dad, Mr. XXXX XXXX. Since he is semi-illiterate, I am the one in charge of the Land Use Charges, paying the bills in his behalf.

Sent to: dmin@landusecharge.com, satax@lagosstate.gov.ng, luc@lagosstate.gov.ng, lsgmof.luc@lagosstate.gov.ng, info@lagosstate.gov.ng,

PS: I'm still waiting for their answers. Actually I know the steps to take to deal with them.

FamilyWhat Is One Thing You Caught Your Child Doing That You Wish You Had Never Seen? by ItuExchange(op): 9:52am On Apr 17, 2016
What is one thing you caught your child doing that you wish you had never seen?

Oh man, I will never forget this (because it still happens).

My two year old daughter had an orgasm. Right in front of me. From grinding her little vagina on the corner of her toddler sized ottoman.

SO here's the full story:

When my daughter was about four months old, I was giving her a bath in her baby bath, which came with a spa whirlpool attachment. One day, I put her in the bath, and the whirlpool was facing her feet (normally it was pointed at her head, but she was on the little elevated thing so it would just circulate around her). She started cooing happily. I figured - like a normal dad - she was just happy for her bath.

Cue next bathtime: I put her in the correct way this time, and she realized she couldnt feel the hot water jet on her vagina (I didn't connect this for a while, and even then I just thought she liked how it felt on her feet). BABY. WAS. PISSED.

Fast forward a few months, and her grandmother bought her a toddler sized easy chair, that came with an ottoman. Now she had always been a squirmy wormy, we just never figured out that she was trying to stimulate her vagina on things.

To this day, I still don't know why she tried to hold herself up on the sides of it and hump the corner of it. I have no idea where she got that idea. I just remember watching her and wondering if she was itchy, or had a UTI, or some other scary thing that a dad who grew up with only brothers had never experienced. Then she did it. She let out this low guttural sound, ignored everyone around her, and then stood up fresh as a daisy.

....Oh.....My.....God....Did...She...Just...

If I could have bleached my brain I would have. So my enlightened reaction is to make a doctors appointment who informs me that this is a thing called Toddler Masturbation! WHAT?! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT NONSENSE?! ARE YOU SERIOUS? WELL HOW DO I STOP IT?!

DON'T stop it is what I was told, you'll make her afraid of her body. As she gets older, you just have to tell her that this sort of thing happens in her bedroom only, in private.

So here she is, at four. Still humping away, though now shes way too big for that ottoman (it gets washed lmfao). As a result, she has developed an absolute ridiculous upper body and core, she has a sixpack and her waist can still fit 6 month jeans.

Although we don't actively encourage her to do it, we also don't stop her. We let her know it's normal to explore your body, (though we do actively discourage her from trying to put anything in there like fingers and stuff).

My son - thankfully - is more interested in trucks and trains.

Here is some links on this subject, and for those wondering, yes I followed up with a child behavioral psychologist, an endocrinologist, and everyone else under the sun to make sure it wasnt Precocious Puberty.

When Toddlers Touch Themselves: The Best Way to Handle a Touchy Situation

Precocious Puberty

UPDATES:

People have asked me why didn't we take her ottoman away. We did. She stole my wife's step stool. Since she's too big for the ottoman we figure if we give that to her she'll hit muscle failure sooner.

I've also been asked if she gets bored and that's why she stands up. She's been known to steal an iPad so she can watch Netflix while she does this. Clever scamp.

I have been asked about CPS (Child Protective Services). Yes, this did get me a visit from CPS. My daughter was having night-terrors from what we suspected was anxiety about becoming a big sister. We contacted a New Parent Support counselor, and explained what was happening. She came to the house, saw our daughter humping her ottoman, and contacted CPS. How did we find out? A 0700 visit on Veteran's day, being questioned by what turned out to be a very nice lady. It helped that I had taken her to a medical doctor, psychologist, and endocrinologist. Our case was closed within 4 months, but it was fairly nerve wracking.

As a bonus, because I was in the military at the time, this also caused a CID (Criminal Investigation Department) case to be opened against me. I was never questioned, charged, or anything else though. I think everyone understood the Counselor had jumped to conclusions.

Edit: One outstanding Quoran pointed out to me that it was the clitoris she was stimulating, not the actual vagina. While that's true, I don't have the intestinal fortitude to write "my daughter" and "clitoris" in the same sentence. My faithful fellow Quoran is spot on though.

Edit 2: WOW! This has gotten so much more popular than I ever dreamed! Thank you to all, I make an effort to respond to each of your comments. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response to this story. I am so thankful this has led to so much goodness and education for people, and I am so grateful to those of you calling me a good father.

Some of you have questioned whether I should have gone anonymous for this, citing my daughter's privacy and future bullying. While I severely doubt that anyone is going to come on Quora in a few years, dig up my name, and then find this particular question to find this particular answer and bully her for it, I suppose anything is possible. However if this is the worst thing that happens to her, I'll consider myself lucky. I'll take her on here and show her all the positive that has come from telling her story. I thank you for your concerns though smiley.

So this answer just broke half a million views. That is unbelievable! Everyone who has read this answer, who has commented, who has up voted it, you are what make Quora so great. It isn't my answer, it's every one of you reading it. Every funny joke, anatomical correction, concern for privacy, and of course every mirroring story that people were shamed or scared to share. You are what make this site the only social media I use. There has been such an outpouring of love and support, of a community built around similar stories to this, from everyone who never knew it happened to anyone besides them. From everyone who shared their own tale. I'm so humbled and honored. I will continue to nurture this community as long as you all keep commenting. Thank you all so VERY much, I love each and every one of you.

The U.S. Is Bankrupt! Most People Just Don’t Know!

U.S. National Debt Clock: Real Time

Usdebtclock.org says our official debt wen mark and stands now at $19.06 trillion. To put that number in a different form — your family’s share of the US debt went up about $3,300 last month. Subtract that from your taxes and what you earned last month and it really gives you a good estimate of how unprofessional our government is. And by the way, politics is a game where candidates argue over non-relative issues and stir up the public. Anyone who campaigns on real reform — such as starting a plan to eliminate deficit spending (much less the debt) is considered to be too far out there to be a legitimate candidate. That’s why I tend to consider politics as a joke. The voting choice for President of the United States this year might come down to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump? Come on. (says Van Tharp).

InvestmentWhat Is More Valuable Than Monetary Wealth? by ItuExchange(op): 11:59pm On Apr 15, 2016
What is more valuable than monetary wealth?

I lost $15mm in one summer. It was about a million a week and then it picked up speed.

I bought a house. I invested in bad companies. I started worse companies. I bought art. I took A LOT of helicopters.

I thought about money all the time. I wanted to make $100 million. Then...I thought...I can finally feel like I achieved something.

That's how stupid I was. I then lost my house, lost my marriage, lost my friends, lost my family, lost a lot of opportunities.

Enough about that. It's like reading the same newspaper twice. Boring. I write about that all the time.

Ten things more valuable than money.

A) One 5 minute call with my daughter instead of a 5 minute call about business with someone I don't like

PLEASE GOD, give me the strength to not take the five minute call with the person I don't like.

I can lose all the money in the world but I can make it back. I will NEVER get back the 5 minutes I could've spent with my daughters. She's trying to navigate through this world that's so difficult to plunge through. I make her laugh. 5 minutes of making her laugh she will remember forever. She will say at my deathbed, "He always made me laugh", but only if I devote those 5 minutes to her. That's more valuable than money.

B) Writing down ideas

I like to write down ten ideas a day. That's 3,650 ideas a year. I do it on a waiter's pad. I have over 100 waiter's pads in my closet.

Ideas are more valuable than money. Income has gone down versus inflation for 40 years.

And people say ideas are a "dime a dozen". I can tell you this is not true. Pick any concept. Like say, "10 ideas of novels I can write". Maybe the first 3 might be easy ("a dime for three ideas"wink. But ten starts to get difficult.

Then people say "execution is everything". This is so wrong. First, you can't execute without a decent idea to begin with. Second, execution ideas are a subset of ideas. Let's say I have a good idea for a novel. Now my next execution step is to have ideas for all the chapters. An outline. Then my next execution step is to have ideas for when I will write. And so on.

Money lasts for a few seconds in my hands. But ideas can grow and build and spread and touch everyone I know and then everyone they know.

C) Ideas for other people

I had $0 in the bank in 2008 when I was getting my divorce. Then I started to make money.

How did I start making money? I started sending "10 Ideas to Make X Better". Where X might be a person or a business. Then I would send to X.

One out of 50 would respond. But that's ok. That's all it takes to make millions.

D) Persistence is more valuable than money

In the above case I had to (and still do) send out 100s of emails. I had to do hours of research to come up with ideas. I had to go to meetings without any clue what the outcome would be.

But persistence let me touch people. Persistence let me share my ideas. Persistence got people excited about those ideas. Persistence got me paid for those ideas.

E) Physical health

I can get in the car, drive two miles to the gym, and then walk on the treadmill for two miles while watching about Ebola on CNN in front of me.

Or I can sleep well, eat well, and take a few healthy walks during the week.

Sometimes Claudia, my wife, makes me do yoga with her. Ok, I can do that also. Sometimes I think I'm very good at it when I finally touch my toes.

I don't care how long I live. If I die tomorrow I feel like I've lived a life worth living. But I do want quality of life until I die. My father spent the last two years of his life staring at a ceiling because he was paralyzed from a stroke.

I keep healthy because if you spend two years of your life staring at a ceiling, money is worth zero.

F) Laughing

Guess what? Kids laugh on average 300 times a day. Adults laugh on average....5 times a day.

What the hell happened?

I can't pay people to laugh. Money doesn't make me laugh. Except when I'm bathing in it and pretending to be Dr. Evil.

Laughter is linked to all sorts of things that make you healthier. Like it releases oxytocin throughout the body which gives feelings of happiness and calmness.

I have to give a TEDx talk later. I need to laugh before then.

Here's my go-to laugh items of the day:
the book "Food" by Jim Gaffigan
Andy Samberg's Harvard commencement speech
any standup by Louis CK
the book "Ant Farm" by Simon Rich
the TV show "Family Guy"

I'm sure I will find others. I will get up to those 300 laughs today and it will have nothing to do with money but it will have everything to do with my future happiness and success.

G) Giving

This sounds like a cliché. People always say "give and you shall receive", which I believe in but since people always say it, it's a cliché.

When I was dead broke (again, or prior) in 2001 I would volunteer in a charity.

So instead of feeling bad for myself or getting anxious about killing myself because I had no money, I felt good about the charity work and I also got a crush on the woman doing the work with me. Nothing happened in the crush but sometimes the hint that love is all around is enough to stop the anxiety and cure the worries about money.

Giving is a soft boomerang. You throw it as hard as you can. It touches everyone around. And then it flies back into your hand. And you know what? When you catch it, that feels like fun. Fun is a game. Fun is better than money.

H) Your DNA

The universe has been around for 13.2 billion years (according to a professor I spoke to yesterday. Maybe he's right or maybe it was created one second ago by aliens who are doing a scientific experiment and we can't even tell).

The universe will be around for another ten trillion at least. You will be around for another 40-60 years, give or take 100.

Your body will be dead. So will your mind. Hardware fails, but your software (your DNA) will live on. The best thing you can do for your DNA is to leave a legacy. We know that money doesn't work as a legacy. It disappears after a few generations. But other legacies can live for thousands of years. Your ancestors, your ideas, the light you have shared with others.

I) Experiences

One Christmas I bought my kids big beautiful presents. Now we all try to remember what they were but we forget.

Other Christmases I find a great location, rent a beautiful place, get a ping pong table shipped in, and my kids and I fly out there and have fun for ten days. Then Claudia makes a poster about the experience.

Now we all know what we did. My kids will never forget it. I converted my money into an experience rather than just another material good.

I'm preparing them for all the great things they will have to talk about on my death bed.

J) Me

I am more valuable than money. I'm such an amazing thing. With DNA, and neurochemicals, and I try to make people laugh. And I try to help people. And I'm amazingly humble. NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, is more humble than me.

Nobody is more deserving of love than me.

CareerI Lied About My Age To Get A Government Job. Will I Go To Hell Fire? by ItuExchange(op): 2:55am On Apr 14, 2016

I Lied About My Age to Get a Government Job. Will I Go to Hell Fire?

Hello readers:

I’m 38 years old. I was married with 4 kids.

I’m a Christian, baptized 25 years ago. Since my conversion, I’ve become a really mature Christian. However, I’ve had more than my fair share of financial problems.

I have an MBA and many years of working experience. I worked at 5 one-man businesses, but my stints were short-lived as results of employers’ antics, harsh business environment, downsizing and credit crunch.

My husband died several years ago while working as a commercial motorcyclist - he had a fatal accident.

Because of my religion and conscience, I refused to sell my body for money. I made several entrepreneurial attempts and failed.

I went to my home town to farm. The first year was successful but the second year was a failure because rain did not start on time, and the crops I planted got burnt before copious rain started.

I went through countless fasting and prayers, vigils, revivals, etc. but there were no changes.

My children called me” Mummy! Mummy!” I often cried because I knew I couldn’t provide adequately for them in this hostile world.

Not too long ago, the Federal government announced some vacant positions under a ministry and a high-ranking government official, who also happens to be a member of my church, told me about it. After going through my CV and credentials, he confirmed that I qualified for the job, but the minimum age allowed was 30 years.

I was 38 years.

The only thing standing in my way, according to that official, was my age barrier. He said he would do everything to help me secure the job, but the only problem was my age.

I went to a high court to swear an affidavit, stating that my age was 30. This was a blatant lie.

I had to do it, since I couldn’t contribute funds in my church and my children were suffering. I got that job and the salary is good. You know government job – allowances and retirement plans.

But as a Christian, my Bible-trained conscience is tormenting me, telling me that I lied about my age to get a job and that could make me lose heaven.

This is not a momentary sin: the benefit of this age falsification would last many years. But what could I have done? My children are now going to good schools and I’m taking good care of them. I can also now contribute money in my church. I now have some savings.

Why would the government and corporate bodies set age limits for candidates?

Is it a crime for educated people to grow older? Is it a curse to grow older?

Did I do wrong to lie about my age to get a job?

Would I go to hell fire?

I’m highly disturbed.

Foreign AffairsHow Did Donald Trump Make His Fortune? by ItuExchange(op): 2:49am On Apr 14, 2016
Republican presidential front-runner and billionaire businessman Donald Trump loves to talk about his money.

He has told supporters "I am really rich" and "I've always been good at making money".
Mr Trump values his net worth at more than $10bn (£7bn) though this has been disputed. However, exactly how much he is worth is unclear.

Those organisations that have looked at his finances have come up with widely differing figures.
According to Forbes his net worth is $4.5bn, Wealth-X says it is $4.4bn, while Bloomberg Billionaire's index says it is just $2.9bn.

Mr Trump dismisses all these lower figures, saying he's "worth much more". The main reason for these widely differing numbers is that so much of his business holdings are private.
