ComputersIntel’s New Core I9 Chips Could Make Laptops Feel Like Desktops by Itzpetersv(op): 3:52pm On Apr 05, 2018
In 2007, Intel was stuck, its new seventh-gen laptop and desktop processors were barely faster than the previous year. Intel was stuck.

But this year, it seems Intel’s new chips have improved there ground. The company, on Tuesday announced its first six-core, 12-thread chips for laptops, with one of them being a speed demon that can boost up to 4.8GHZ when cooled below 54 degrees Celsius.

The Asus ROG G703 is one of the first laptops to sport Intel’s Core i9

The new intel core i9-8950HK is the first core i9 chip in a laptop. Intel claims is almost 29 percent faster at everyday tasks than last year’s fastest CPU, the core i7-7820HK. Intel also said it’s 59 percent faster at 4K video editing than that chip (core i7-7820HK).
Related: Computer chip investors Hennessy and Patterson wins the Turing award.

Intel’s new Core i9 flagship even comes unlocked, so you can overclock it — or better yet, leave it to the pros. Intel says it expects PC companies to ship preoverclocked 5GHz+ systems shortly after launch.

Naturally, not everyone will be able to afford a Core i9 processor. For the rest of us, the benefits of Intel’s new 14nm Coffee Lake silicon may also be felt in the company’s Xeon and Core i7 processors, which also offer six cores and 12 threads for all your multitasking (and editing and rendering) needs.

In fact, “more cores” is something of a theme this year, whether we’re talking laptop or desktop. Though the company’s still maintaining its Core i7/Core i5/Core i3 designations, you get more cores for your money now. On the laptop side, you can expect four cores and eight threads, even in Intel’s low-power U-series Core i5 chips. (That was the exception, not the rule, just last year.)

And on the desktop front, Intel’s low-power Core i3 chips now have four cores, while the Core i5 have six. That’s two more than each had previously.

Science/TechnologyUber Pulls Out Of Southeast Asia , Selling Operation To Rivals, Grab by Itzpetersv(op): 4:01pm On Mar 27, 2018
Reports from REUTERS said that Ride-hailing firm has agreed to sell its Southeast Asian business to bigger regional rivals, GRAB.

The deal was announced as early as Monday marks the industry’s first big consolidation in Southeast Asia, which is home to about 650 million people and as such puts pressure on its rivals Go-Jek which is backed by Alphabet Google’s parent company and China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd.

As part of the transaction, Uber would get as much as 30 percent stake in the combined business, said a source with direct knowledge of the matter who did not want to be identified as the deal is not yet public.

Another source familiar with the deal said Uber would acquire a 25 percent to 30 percent stake in Grab, valuing the entire business at $6 billion, the same valuation it commanded in its most recent capital raising.

Uber and Singapore-based Grab, Southeast Asia’s biggest ride-hailing firm, declined to comment.

Expectations of consolidation in Asia’s fiercely competitive ride-hailing industry were stoked earlier this year when Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp made a multi-billion dollar investment in Uber.

SoftBank is also one of the main investors in several of Uber’s rivals, including Grab, China’s Didi Chuxing, and India’s Ola.

Uber, which is preparing for a potential initial public offering in 2019, lost $4.5 billion last year and is facing fierce competition at home and in Asia, as well as a regulatory crackdown in Europe.

It is also recovering from a year of scandals that saw co-founder Travis Kalanick forced out as chief executive in June amid U.S. criminal inquiries and a workplace marred by sexual harassment allegations

Science/TechnologyChina Plans To Promote Standardisation In Electric Vehicles by Itzpetersv(op): 3:50pm On Mar 27, 2018
China said it will work to improve levels of standardisation in its electric vehicle industry, a sector it is aggressively promoting to help combat smog and to position the country as a leading car-making giant in the future, reported Reuters.

This year its standardisation efforts will focus on recharging, battery design and fuel consumption, the industry’s ministry said in a statement.

China will also work to promote its own standards and benchmarks for electric and plug-in electric vehicles overseas, taking advantage of economies of scale to become a global leader in standardisation, they also said.

Beijing, China is seeking to engineer a dramatic shift away from conventional gasoline cars with strict production quotas for the so-called new energy vehicles (NEVs), prompting a flurry of deals as both foreign and domestic automakers race to ensure they do not fall short.

AutosUber Barred From Resuming Arizona Self-drive Trial by Itzpetersv(op): 3:38pm On Mar 27, 2018
The car-hailing company had already halted its trial after one of the vehicles involved struck and killed a pedestrian a week ago.

Arizona’s governor wrote to the firm on Monday saying there had been an “unquestionable failure” to make safety the top priority.

Uber said it would help investigators “in any way we can”.

He also added that he had ordered officials to suspend the firm’s right to drive autonomous vehicles on local roads pending the outcome of inquiries by national transport safety regulators.

The governor’s tone contrasts with a statement given in 2016, when Mr Ducey said he welcomed the company’s self-driving fleet “with open arms and wide open roads”.

777,000 New Energy Vehicles (NEV) were sold in China in 2017, a jump of 53 percent on the year and the most sold in any one country in 2017. Beijing set its sight to bring its annual sales to 2million over two years time.

China has already drawn up more than 100 technological benchmarks relating to electric vehicles but lack of standardisation has been long identified as one of the major challenges facing the sector. Some local governments have even set different requirements to restrict firms from other regions from accessing their markets.

Delegates to the country’s parliament said this month that the same problem of standardisation has also made it difficult to create safe and cost-efficient automated recycling facilities.

Science/TechnologySelf-taught Rocket Scientist Launches His Rocket Into California Sky by Itzpetersv(op): 2:59pm On Mar 26, 2018
A self-taught rocket scientist finally went up – just like He always pledged he would.

The world is becoming increasingly interesting as you can teach yourself just about anything. This week we watched that happen in the life of a man who just longed to be a space scientist and decided to teach himself.

Saturday, the day he finally launched his rocket, it seemed like it would be cancelled just like every other time he had wanted to launch given that the wind was strong and his rocket was losing steam. Ideally, they wanted it at 350 psi for maximum thrust, but it was dropping to 340.

PhonesApple’s Tim Cook Calls For Stronger Privacy Laws After The Facebook Scandal by Itzpetersv(op): 10:06am On Mar 26, 2018
The Apple CEO has largely kept quiet on privacy issues since Facebook’s troubles sprung up last week. That’s when we learned that the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica quietly, deceptively gathered data belonging to more than 50 million Facebook users in 2014.

Cook’s silence ended abruptly on Saturday when he fielded a question about the Facebook situation and how it affects his views on data privacy. Speaking at the China Development Forum in Beijing, Cook voiced his support for government regulation (Bloomberg).

“I think that this certain situation is so dire and has become so large that probably some well-crafted regulation is necessary,” Cook said. “The ability of anyone to know what you’ve been browsing about for years, who your contacts are, who their contacts are, things you like and dislike and every intimate detail of your life — from my own point of view it shouldn’t exist.”

Art, Graphics & VideoGoogle To Acquire Imaging And Virtual Reality Startup Lytro For $40m To Bolster by Itzpetersv(op): 4:27pm On Mar 25, 2018
Two weeks ago, Apple acquired “Tetxture”, a magazine company now Google is looking to strengthen its image tech by acquiring startup company Lytro

Google is buying imaging startup Lytro for around $40m, and looking to snap up the firm’s tech for virtual reality (VR) use according to TechCrunch.

Another source has also shared a more interesting story by noting that not all of Lytro’s employees will be absorbed into Google’s corporate mass, but all the tech will be swallowed up.

Many of us can remember Lytro which debuted 7 years ago where it popped up with an odd rectangular camera that used ‘light field’ technology to enable pictures to be refocussed after they’ve been snapped.

The camera didn’t sell massively , and Lytro pivoted into the world of VR hardware, producing tech like light field 360 camera arrays, handy for shooting photos and videos for use with a VR headset.

Science/TechnologyGoodnews!!!! Chrome 66 Will Support Silencing Of Unwanted Videos. by Itzpetersv(op): 4:03pm On Mar 25, 2018
Having already introduced an ad blocker which removes the more dynamic) elements of advertising from its Chrome browser, it has now set its eyes on silencing annoying.

Starting with Chrome 66, which is currently in beta, Chrome will automatically mute any autoplay video content with sound.

This means that not only adverts will be affected but also dynamic sites which the company has embedded for some more value to their site.

It comes with different options you can choose to turn the feature off altogether, or you could limit it to sites you’ve ‘previously shown interest in’ its video

Car TalkAeromobil’s Electric Flying Car To Kick Off In 10 Years by Itzpetersv(op): 5:40pm On Mar 24, 2018
Three years ago, Slovakian engineering company AeroMobil saw its dreams of launching a flying car crash but the company is back at it again.

Now they’ve got a four-seater Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) concept vehicle that can also serve as a road vehicle when not in use in the sky.

The flying car, named “the AeroMobil 5.0”, was revealed this week with motors on the wing tips and an improved suspension system for a smooth landing.

Unlike other VTOLs in development, this all-in-one vehicle becomes a car that can drive on regular roads before or after flying up to about 200 miles, no special landing pods necessary.
A previous concept car, known as AeroMobile 4.0, is a short take-off and landing vehicle, that means it requires a short runway. The vehicle is still in testing, and can travel up to 400 miles on a charge since it’s more energy efficient than the VTOL.

The AeroMobil 5.0 will have airbags and a parachute to really encapsulate its dual capabilities.

Switzerland based luxury watchmaker Hublot just announced its first ever smartwatch, and it’s going to be powered by Wear OS (formerly Android Wear). Reports says the smartwatch will be the official wristwatch of the referees at the 2018 world cup in Russia

Hublot will only produce 2,018 consumer-level watches, while also producing custom versions for each referee during the games.

The Hublot watches will be luxurious. Constructed of titanium, the watch will have six H-shaped screws adorning its bezel along with a Kevlar insert, all housed in a 13.9 mm-thick case. The default display of the smartwatch will feature a traditional Hublot “analog” face, giving the impression that the smartwatch is actually a conventional, analog watch.

EducationApple Is Reportedly Launching Low-cost Ipads For Schools by Itzpetersv(op): 3:08pm On Mar 23, 2018
Apple is set to unveil a new low-cost iPad model for educators and students next week, according to Bloomberg‘s noted Apple reporter Mark Gurman.

It’s reportedly also working on an educational MacBook model, but won’t unveil that until later on.

Nothing is known yet about the new iPads specs, features or the price. Apple is trying to break back into a market that has largely been taken over by low-cost Chromebooks and PCs.

For your knowledge, the cheapest iPad out in the market is available at $329 which is the standard iPad with ram of 32GB. While many Chromebooks and PC’s can be gotten from just $200 or less.

Apple used to dominate the educational market, but 58% of the market is now dominated by Google-powered Chromebooks or Android tablets, 22% by PCs and 20% by Macs and devices. The market is worth $17.7 billion worldwide, but it’s not just sales that are the point. Many students continue using the devices they learned on, driving future sales for educational suppliers.

Science/TechnologyApple Is Developing Its Own Microled Screens For Apple Watches by Itzpetersv(op): 2:50pm On Mar 19, 2018
Bloomberg reported on Monday that the Giant tech company is working on a new type of LED display in a secret facility in California

The screen tech, which is called MicroLED, is similar to OLED in some aspects; the two don’t require backlight and offer better contrast than LCDs but has better brightness and consumes less energy. However, MicroLED is harder to produce than OLED, which is why the technology hasn’t been successfully commercialized yet.

Apple showing interest in MicroLED is not a new stuff; the company acquired MicroLED developer LuxVue in May 2014. Back then, rumors had it that Apple will use MicroLED in its then-upcoming Watch, but the company ended up using an OLED screen.

But it appears that Apple have no given up on MicroLED.

According to Bloomberg‘s report, Apple almost suspended the project a few years back but the company’s engineers made significant progress and the development is now at an advanced” stage.

It could still take a couple of years more until we actually see a MicroLED screen in an Apple product. And when it happens, it will likely be on the Apple Watch.

Bloomberg‘s sources claim Apple had successfully built a MicroLED Apple Watch prototype.

Science/TechnologyIBM Has Created A Computer That Is Smaller Than A Flash Drive by Itzpetersv(op): 2:24pm On Mar 19, 2018
Things are about to change as IBM is on the verge of unveiling what it claims to be the World smallest computer.

Today is the kick off of IBM Think 2018, the company’s flagship conference. This is where the company plans to unveil the world smallest computer. This is really serious, its physically smaller than a flash drive.

This chip has the computing power of the x86 chip from 1990. so that’s not great compared to what we have today, but bear in mind, you need a microscope to see it.

The computer will cost less than ten cents to manufacture, and will also pack “several hundred thousand transistors,” according to the company. These will allow it to “monitor, analyse, communicate, and even act on data.”

Don’t be afraid, It works with blockchain.

Specifically, this computer will be a data source for blockchain applications. It’s intended to help track the shipment of goods and detect theft, fraud, and non-compliance. It can also do basic AI tasks, such as sorting the data it’s given.

According to IBM, this is only the beginning. “Within the next five years, cryptographic anchors — such as ink dots or tiny computers smaller than a grain of salt — will be embedded in everyday objects and devices,” says IBM head of research Arvind Krishna. If he’s correct, we’ll see way more of these tiny systems in objects and devices in the years to come.

FoodInstant Pot Max Promises To Cook Faster by Itzpetersv(op): 2:12pm On Mar 19, 2018
he Instant Pot Max cooks faster due to its higher pressure. It also supports different touchscreen controls.

The newest Instant Pot in town promises to cook food faster and give you more options than other models of the most popular electric pressure cooker.

The Instant Pot Max was on display on Saturday at the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago.

It’s a 6-quart (5.6-liter) electric pressure cooker with its pressure up to a full 15 pounds per square inch (psi), an ability (Other Instant Pot models have at most 12 psi maximum.)

The higher pressure means that the Instant Pot Max should cook ingredients up to 15 percent faster than the other quickest appliances do today. The higher pressure will also let you use the Instant Pot Max for home canning, the company said.

Instant Pot representatives said the Instant Pot Max will be able to hold its pressure at a high level continually, as opposed to it’s electric models, whose levels are known to fluctuate.

Another new feature for the Instant Pot Max is the ability to sous vide; a type of cooking in which food is placed in a plastic pouch or a glass jar and then placed in a water bath or steam environment.

An Instant Pot rep said later versions of the Max will have a sous vide setting that will heat water to a specific temperature for sous vide, but it hasn’t yet been made clear whether the first version of the Max will include it.

The Instant Pot Max’s other features include a slick touchscreen display, updated controls with LED labels and a central control dial you can use to navigate through the Max’s menu option

Beside canning, other cooking options on the Instant Pot Max include manual pressure cook, sauté or brown, steam, slow cook, soup or broth and yogurt. You can also change how these presets handle food. For instance, you can adjust pressure and temperature.

The most interesting feature is the new automatic pressure-venting function. With the new Instant Pots, you can wait for a natural release or manually open the steam valve. With the Max, you can program it to release its pressure quickly, slowly or pulse for moderate speed.

It also features a planned agitation feature that will stir food.
