Jamiuokolaa: SPY360 et al, is this true or should all these different newspapers be investigated for bigotry? Making a language compulsory doesn't mean they were not studying it. I schooled in Lagos and Yoruba was not compulsory. You can choose to study Yoruba or Igbo or Hausa. I know Yoruba friends that chose Hausa I don't understand how this your posts proves anything |

Spy360: I have read the SC judgement on the issue and I observed that none of the entire panel was Igbo. So their understanding of the tradition may not be accurate and I don't blame them.
What I can assure you is that this law will create more problems than solution because of the misunderstanding and not even the intent. That part of the tradition has obviously come to an end. Na man dey make tradition Na man dey change am Back then, like you rightly said, ancestral lands were not transferrable. People cannot even sell it. Today, people don sell am finish. All those estates springing up everywhere are people's ancestral lands. So why can't the female child inherit the lands or proceeds? Also, in the past, a man will be mandated to take another wife so he can have a male child, if the first gives birth to girls or doesn't give birth. Today, people are monogamous even with only female children. So will such a man leave nothing for his daughters today? Traditions change, and this will most likely be one |

BlueRayDick: Gbadebo will speak in English while Gbadamosi do the interpretation in Yoruba 😂 3 years is sufficient time for me to learn Hausa, Efik, Nupe, etc to a 50% fluency level These are languages that are foreign to me. But a Yoruba boy with a Yoruba background cannot have time to polish himself. |

BlueRayDick: I think they just feel the need to support/defend Gbadebo (maybe because of his underdog status in 2023 gubernatorial elections) and nothing more. On paper, Funsho Doherty looks like a far better alternative when compared to Gbadebo.
Since 2023, Funsho Doherty has been actively calling out Lagos state government over fiscal transparency and public procurement. He's been doing the real job of opposition leader shinning torchlight to all those areas Lagos State's funds are being siphoned by the ruling party. He's not really on twitter bantering words with Lagos state government's officials, instead he's setting the tone for the general public to see the fiscal irresponsibility going on at different levels of governance in the state.
Personally, I think Funsho Doherty is been doing the heavy lifting of playing opposition politics with facts and not just lazying about bantering words with commissioners & SSA's online in the name of holding government accountable. Funsho was the one that told us Sanwo-Olu used billions to construct 1km of road He was the one that showed us how LASG used 200 million to pay lawyers for Sanwo-Olu during election tribunal. He was the one that revealed a ghost company that received 100 million for nothing. GRV said nothing in 4 year. He did nothing and couldn't even learn Yoruba. Na the person wey serious be this |

Theflint1: We can't criticize politicians for engaging in corn eating type gimmicks because of elections yet demand another candidate learn a language simply for gimmickery.
I heard he's improved in his Yoruba, but I'd rather he had spent that time polishing whatever ideas he had around governance.
38 chinese administrators loaned from the CCP with their English translators by their side, deployed in governorship and the presidential positions would do a better job than what we have today. You are the one that said 65% of Lagos are Yorubas. These large number have told you they prefer a candidate who can converse in their language Why not learn it? Him refusing to learn it outright disrespect to them. What's more funny to me is that the language was an issue for him in 2023. I would expect such a person to have invested his time to learn it and come out strong in 2027 But see him labalaba-ing himself again That guy is not serious. It's you people that think he is serious |

Abi na comprehension issue or you just want to fight Let us imagine both candidates without a political party What exactly makes GRV more competent than Hamzat? He has no proven record of anything, except a degree. I am not saying he wouldn't do well. I'm saying that with what we can see today, he is not better than Hamzat |

Theflint1: People are free to speak whatever language they want to campaign with, wetin go end am na loss, or victory as in the case of Donald Duke.
The universal language of administering states in Nigeria is English, and anybody that speaks English would do just fine.
GRV speaks English, sufficient Yoruba and sufficient Igbo (the two most widely spoken local dialects in Lagos)...if ability to converse in local dialects was the only criteria, he's arguably the most qualified. That guy obviously doesn't want to be governor. You guys are more zealous and serious than him You lost an election in 2023, and part of the feedback is that you couldn't speak Yoruba. 3 years later, he's back and still cannot speak Yoruba. How is this person a serious person? |

TemporaryHansel: See mindset. A daughter cannot inherit her father's properties.
And the people practicing such want to claim liberal. It's like liberal have new meaning.
Spy needs to have his head planked for making such blas ph em ous stat em ent. Let me explain it in the best possible way I can. In the tradition, properties are non transferrable. This means the property of TemporaryHansel must remain with TemporaryHansel. It cannot go to another family So the tradition believes that giving a female child inheritance automatically transfers that property to another family. So it isn't allowed. Meanwhile the female child that gets married into a family is free to inherit because she is now part of that family. My mum is Imo. She wasn't given any inheritance in Imo. She married in Anambra and got an inheritance. That's how it works Like I said, it's the tradition. And I don't know how Spy sees Igbos as liberal |

A Hamzat that is part of the criminal gang holding Lagos in bondage, sworn loyalty to Tinubu and allegiance to USA and
A GRV, young man from the new block, that the only thing you hold against him is his lack of fluency in local language
We should be smarter than this.
If GRV lacks enough competence to you, then go for Funsho Doherty who is even my best candidate for Lagos State.
But Hamzat is a no no Doherty is your best candidate, but you carry Sword and Shield dey defend GRV? I can sympathize with a GRV that was rejected because of language barriers in 2023, but if after 3 years, he still doesn't see the need to learn the language, he's not serious. |

Spy360: Should speaking a language come before competence and character?
Spare me this nonsense argument
Being eloquent is different from being unable to speak
I am not Yoruba but can speak a bit of it. I believe GRV can speak Yoruba just that he is not fluent
What you're demanding is being fluent. You cannot be fluent in 2 years when you're close to 40 years old So how do you know he is competent and has character? Where has that been tested before? Let's even skip that argument If GRV didn't get enough support because he couldn't speak the language in 2023, what stops him from learning it in 3 years? You want to be governor, and the people you want to rule says you should know the language. Why hasn't he learned it? The guy may not be as serious as you take him |

Language can only become a factor when other factors are equal.
I can't be supporting a Hamzat that swore allegiance to both Tinubu and the United States simply because GRV cannot speak Yoruba fluently.

Amoto94: Some years ago in Ondo State an Ebiraman won Councilor in one of the wards, I'm yet to confirm but it was rumored that an Ebira was a chairman of Somolu in Lagos not too long ago. In my place if you're from a different clan it is near impossible to become a councilor in a ward dominated by another clan. So, I can say that SW, NW, and NE are the regions that are less discriminatory when it comes to giving opportunities to outsiders Using a councillor to make this decision holds little water. If a ward is dominated by non indigenes, the councillor can easily be a non indigene. A ward dominated by Igbos in Ondo state will easily have an Igbo councillor Let us see Ondo state give commissioners to an Ebira man, or give HOA tickets or Senate tickets to another tribe. It's only Lagos you see these things easily. |

In most states in other zones, they will not allow you employ only non indigenes in your company.
I don't think this is limited to Lagos, I know of such cases in Ibadan too.
The yorubas in general are more free/liberal than the rest. EOD. Mind sharing examples? I'm trying to imagine how this can be possible. Unless it's a sole proprietor consisting of Oga and 2 sales girls |
