butterflylion: Quoting me directly wouldn't change your moniker to hopeless would it?
Do you not think future atheists would also view this thread? Or have you no hope there would be future atheists?
Let him offer the coping mechanisms so future baby atheists can have something to lean on as they slowly adapt don't you believe so?
You guys aren't discussing here but just consoling each other. Of greater value and importance would be coping mechanisms listed side by side with the OP. I believe sensible people would agree to this. When you list out complaints, common sense entails you suggest solutions alongside. Ogbeni. Kindly keep your suggestions to yourself. The op might not have the solutions. That is why everyone can comment on a thread. Others can contribute. Furthermore, there are other threads that have advise for atheists living in Nigeria |

dalaman: Atheist without money in Nigeria? Na death be that oo. Most people around me ONLY tolerate my skeptical utterances because I feed them. They don't even know that am an atheist but they just tolerate my comments only because I feed them. They get angry when I tell them that juju is fake or if I advise them to work things out instead of praying. Some months ago my in law brought TB Josuah's miracle water to the house and was trying to give my daughter to take for her fever, I rejected it and told her that her medication is enough. The inlaw took offense, she saw me as weird but didn't complain much cos she came to beg me for money. There are many other incedence like this.
I don't go to church or mosques. I don't follow them to pray and engage in other religious activities. When the bring their superstitions to me I point out to them that they are not real, I always apply caution though.
Am am enigma to most people around me. They really want to get mad at me but they can't because I feed them and am seriously liking it. I remember one of my friends arguing with me about tithe. He said tithing will bring further blessings. I then asked him that why then is he broke and asking me for money since he has been tithing for over 5 years. He got angry and left. The next time I saw him, he was looking for a partner for his business. I then asked him jokingly to tithe more so that he would have enough money to start his business. He just kept quiet at first then switched the conversation to his business proposition. Money is the only thing that silences a hungry Nigerian. |

butterflylion: Let me start by posting the entire article here.
Now let's break it down.
From the very first statement it ends with "The evidence for Jesus is not limited to later folklore, as are accounts of Arthur" which was put side by side as a comparison. Two supposed historical figures around the same period or so. Yet it was established that Arthur was expanded based on folklore unlike those of Jesus. What crap are you talking? What the sentence means is that there is much more than folklore about Jesus as compared to King Arthur. There is folklore about Jesus. Do you believe the Jewish stories about Jesus in which they say that Jesus is the son of a sorcerer? Do you think the historians mostly accept the bible version of christ? butterflylion: Second paragraph
The detailed biographical accounts of Jesus in the New Testament gospels date from around 40 years after he died. These all appeared within the lifetimes of numerous eyewitnesses, and provide descriptions that comport with the culture and geography of first-century Palestine. It is also difficult to imagine why Christian writers would invent such a thoroughly Jewish saviour figure in a time and place – under the aegis of the Roman empire – where there was strong suspicion of Judaism.
^^^^^ ||||||||
That statement supports the Jesus claim and his works because it matches locations, culture and was documented within the lifetime of living witnesses. Stop exaggerating. There are many versions of Jesus from different witnesses. Even in the bible, there are differing accounts of Jesus. butterflylion: Third paragraph extract
but the other is not suspicious – a reference to James, the brother of “Jesus, the so-called Christ”.
About 20 years after Josephus we have the Roman politicians Pliny and Tacitus, who held some of the highest offices of state at the beginning of the second century AD. From Tacitus we learn that Jesus was executed while Pontius Pilate was the Roman prefect in charge of Judaea (AD26-36) and Tiberius was emperor (AD14-37) – reports that fit with the timeframe of the gospels. Pliny contributes the information that, where he was governor in northern Turkey, Christians worshipped Christ as a god. Neither of them liked Christians – Pliny writes of their “pig-headed obstinacy” and Tacitus calls their religion a destructive superstition.
^^^^ ||||||
Pliny was a Roman so an enemy to the gospel and even he testified in his own writing of the miraculous man named Jesus who was worshipped or adored by the Christians and termed them as destructive. Obviously because they were anti Rome. Like I said, there was a Jesus but which version to believe? butterflylion: Fourth paragraph
Nobody ever objected to the existence of Jesus. Except for some atheist historians...... butterflylion: Fifth paragraph
Comments from scholars
Alana nobbs
While historical and theological debates remain about the actions and significance of this figure, his fame as a teacher, and his crucifixion under the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, may be described as historically certain
John Dominic Crossan
That [Jesus] was crucified is as sure as anything historical can ever be, since both Josephus and Tacitus [...] agree with the Christian accounts on at least that basic fact.
Otto Betz
If we apply to the New Testament, as we should, the same sort of criteria as we should apply to other ancient writings containing historical material, we can no more reject Jesus' existence than we can reject the existence of a mass of pagan personages whose reality as historical figures is never questioned
Ermann
Few of these mythicists are actually scholars trained in ancient history, religion, biblical studies or any cognate field, let alone in the ancient languages generally thought to matter for those who want to say something with any degree of authority about a Jewish teacher who (allegedly) lived in first-century Palestine
^^^^ |||||||
Those are views about the Jesus myth theory butterflylion: Final paragraph
These abundant historical references leave us with little reasonable doubt that Jesus lived and died. The more interesting question – which goes beyond history and objective fact – is whether Jesus died and lived
So they concluded that Jesus lived and died. yet also agreed that his biographical accounts are accurate.
Go check what biography entails
A biography, or simply bio, is a detailed description of a person's life. It involves more than just the basic facts like education, work, relationships, and death; it portrays a person's experience of these life events. butterflylion: ^^^^^^^ ||||||||||||
All of the above I have written confirms the title I knighted you with which is JUMBO DUMBO. You asked for it so you got it. You just confirmed that you are a clown. what most historians will tell you is that a Jesus existed but not all the stories, including the bible, about him are true. |

chemystery: My guys it's not easy. Last Sunday, I took a junior colleague out to drink. He was praising me of my kindness towards him and other coworkers in his grade. He said I'm just exceptional. He appreciated me for the love and kindness I showed him when he hard an accident at work place. He recounted that I was the only one who came to recognize with him amongst all the senior colleagues.
We kept on discussing. Since it was a Sunday, our discussion converged to religion and I eventually revealed to him I'm an atheists. The way the guys sprang up from his seat, leaving the beer and peppersoup I bought for him still amuses me till now.
" C'mon don't tell me that! You can't tell me that! There is nobody who doesn't believe in God. Why are you like this? In fact I'm scared of you now. Don't let me change the way I use to see you please"
Well, I was able to calm him down. I explained a lot of things to him. I also reminded him about all his praises and how he's placed me as the kindest amongst all. I also told him if he wants to change the way he sees me, then he should also see all my good deeds towards him as evil deeds since I don't believe in god, and all those who neglected him, he should see them as good people who has done the right thing since they all believe in god. People are funny! i can relate to this |

nemelu123: Joel Osteen's Houston mega-church is admitting people who have been forced out of their homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Osteen tweeted a number of times Tuesday, informing people the massive structure, formerly the Compaq Center where the Houston Rockets played their professional basketball games, is stocked with air mattresses and other supplies to rescue Houstonians who've been displaced by rising flood waters.
"Lakewood’s doors are open to anyone needing shelter. We are also looking for volunteers and collecting shelter supplies," one Tweet said, and another announced, "Lakewood is receiving people who need shelter. We are also receiving supplies such as baby food, baby formula and other shelter needs." Nonsense. It was after people abused him on twitter and social media that he opened his church. |

Bolaji21, please learn to reflect upon what you read and write.
You wrote that soeme nigerian tribes believe that their forefathers fell from the sky. It is laughable abi?
But you are ready to believe that an all mighty god up in the sky could not find a sensible way to forgive sins other than sending his Jewish son to commit suicide.
But you are ready to believe the following in the religious books- talking snakes, talking donkeys, zombies, ressurection from the dead etc |

701ecilana: Am a Christian and i watch Game of Thrones. As a matter of fact, i'm an avid fan, am trying to download the latest episode 6. How do i handle the sex scenes? i fast forward them
I disagree with the review done by this article for various reasons. The reviewer looked at the Movie from one side only.
We live in a world were evil seemingly triumphs, and this trend didn't begin with this generation. The world depicted in GOT is a world which has been from time, the difference is that, we see the depiction on screen today.
The God the article talks about, allows evil to almost prevail before He intervenes, not becos He can't help or stop evil, but he allows it to prove a point. And this point is, no matter how long and strong the enemy, is, there'll be an end for him or her.
We live in a world where dogs eat dogs to survive, as depicted in GOT. The Lanisters feels they are the God of the Seven Kingdoms. They have the gold, they have the Iron Bank backing them up, but what is their posterity? Without any Children, who preserves their name. Jamie can't marry, he is bewitched by Cerci, Cerci is can't have any more Children. Tyrion is against Cerci. Who then is there. How are they going to end? How is Cerci going to end?
Evil Seems to be thriving now by Eliminating the other houses which also had their faults, but, lets look at the two remaining Protagonists, Jon Snow and the Dragon Queen Denerese, what are their fights? I mean, what is the motive behind their going for what they are going for?
Jon is not interested in serving himself, but humanity. He is risking himself to destroy MAN'S GENERAL ENEMY, THE DEATH. The enemy of the death is matching towards the living and if he does nothing, everyone including the Lanisters will be crushed, and for this, he risks everything.
Being King and sitting on the Iron Throne is not Jon's dream.
What about Queen Denarese? She is the breaker of Chains. She deliberates people from the Manacles which people like the Cerci puts on them. She is a liberator
At the end of this, Jon will overcome, the Army of the Death, and Denerese will overcome the Lanisters...
WHO WINS? THE GOOD, NOT THE BAD.
This is how i as a Christian see this movie. Evil won't win. Brilliant post! I am impressed! |
