TravelEvergreen Truck Goes Viral After Blocking Motorway Just Like The Ship by Jacseyi(op): 2:17am On Mar 29, 2021
Although the coincidence is entertaining, the ship and the truck do not actually belong to the same firm. Mere days after an Evergreen ship, called Ever Given, got lodged in the Suez Canal, images surfaced of a truck with the Evergreen logo in Nanjing, China, having crashed and ending up coming to a halt across the road’s multiple lanes. The date on the image is stamped at 9.55 AM local time and the accident took place on the Changchun-Shenzhen Expressway.

The similarities between the ship and the truck are astonishing. As Mothership pointed out, both the truck and ship veered off course to their right side and stopped at a roughly 45° angle. They also both blocked traffic from behind them with the ship stopping 260 ships from reaching their destination.

Before we get ahead of ourselves and draw any conclusions that Evergreen is a company that just attracts chaos, it should be noted that the Evergreen truck likely is not affiliated with Evergreen Marine Corporation. As the China Times reported Evergreen does not operate a trailer business in Mainland China, focusing solely on transportation by sea.

Luckily, it should be much easier to dislodge the truck than it is the ship. The Evergreen ship is more than 1,300 ft (roughly 396 m) long and ran aground after 40-knot winds and a sandstorm reduced visibility and the ship's capacity to navigate. A March 24 statement on Evergreen Marine Corp's website stated the firm is working closely with the Suez Canal Authority "to refloat the stranded ship as soon as possible."

The Suez Canal is a key shortcut for worldwide commerce in Egypt, enabling direct transportation between Europe's Mediterranean Sea and Asia via the Red Sea. Centuries ago, navigators exploring or shipping goods were forced to travel around the southern coast of Africa which severely extended their travel times. When the Suez Canal was formally opened in 1869 A.D., it reduced the travel distances by 43%.

HealthPeople Who Eat These On The Regular Might Live Longer And Have Healthier Hearts by Jacseyi(op): 8:51am On Nov 11, 2020
HUGE META-STUDY: THIS FOOD APPEARS TO ACTUALLY MAKE YOU LIVE LONGER

According to the preliminary results of a massive review study, regularly eating chili peppers could have major medical benefits including a lowered risk of heart disease, cancer, and a longer lifespan in general.

The results haven’t yet been evaluated and published in an academic journal, but will be presented during an American Heart Association (AHA) conference that begins Friday, and the work is based on expansive data. In the review, scientists aggregated the results of some 4,729 studies on the health outcomes of including chili pepper in one’s diet that covered, in total, over 570,000 participants.

“We were surprised to find that in these previously published studies, regular consumption of chili pepper was associated with an overall risk-reduction of all-cause, [cardiovascular disease] and cancer mortality,” Dr. Bo Xu, senior study author and a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, said in an AHA press release. “It highlights that dietary factors may play an important role in overall health.”

Specifically, the review found that those who eat chili peppers had a 26 percent lower relative risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than those who rarely or never ate chilis, as well as a 23 percent drop in the risk of cancer deaths. Most notably, however, the scientists noticed a 25 percent reduction in the risk of dying from any cause at all — suggesting that chilis just, well, make you live longer.

To clarify, these numbers deal with relative risks over absolute risks, so they describe the change in risk between two groups — it doesn’t necessarily mean that eating chili peppers will reduce your personal odds of dying from heart disease by 26 percent, but rather that one group’s odds — the group that ate the peppers — are 26 percent better than the other’s.

But because the scientists were merely looking at trends identified by other studies, each of which had its own parameters and conditions, they can’t draw a causal link between eating chili peppers and improved health.

“The exact reasons and mechanisms that might explain our findings, though, are currently unknown,” Dr. Xu said in the release. “Therefore, it is impossible to conclusively say that eating more chili pepper can prolong life and reduce deaths, especially from cardiovascular factors or cancer. More research, especially evidence from randomized controlled studies, is needed to confirm these preliminary findings.”

TravelWorld's Next Supersonic Commercial Aircraft Since Concorde Will Fly This Year by Jacseyi(op): 5:05pm On Jul 09, 2020
The XB-1 aircraft will officially roll out on October 7th, 2020 and we're here for it

For the first time since Concorde stopped flying in 2003, the time has come for a new supersonic aircraft to take to the skies once again. Welcome Boom's XB-1 jet. Its official launch date is October 7th, and you're cordially invited to witness the launch! All you have to do is RSVP via the website here. (https://boomsupersonic.com/xb-1)
It's time to welcome supersonic travel once again
Colorado-based aerospace company, Boom, has been working on faster modes of air travel since its conception in 2014, which includes the return of supersonic planes.
For the first time since Concorde, a new supersonic civil aircraft will be unveiled. XB-1 rolls out this October. You're invited to see the event.

— Boom Supersonic (@boomaero) July 8, 2020
XB-1, its upcoming supersonic non-commercial jet, is the world's first independently developed supersonic aircraft. Even though it won't be carrying any passengers, it marks a clear point in time where commercial viability for supersonic speed is back on the market.

"XB-1 is the first step in bringing supersonic travel back to the world. Flights at twice the speed mean we can travel twice as far, bringing more people, places, and cultures into our lives," said Boom's founder and CEO Blake Scholl.

XB-1 has been designed to gather learnings for Boom's future supersonic commercial jet, Overture, which plans to be the world's fastest commercial airliner to date. The plan is for Overture to transport people across the world in half the time it currently takes.

Using XB-1 to quickly learn about cost-savings, safety, and efficiency for Overture is what will directly pave the way to supersonic air travel, as per Boom's blog post.

Even though the plan is to build the fastest commercial jet on Earth, safety is primary for the company, as Scholl stated "Whenever we face a decision between safety and schedule, safety comes first. As a company, we’re cultivating a safety-first culture, and that’s something that will serve us well moving into the development of Overture."

Given the speeds XB-1, and ultimately Overture, plan on flying at, it's a relief to read Scholl's words. Not only will safety be securely in place, but Boom is also carrying the world's first 100% carbon-neutral flight test program with XB-1. A fast and environmentally-friendly way to travel — sounds pretty good to us!

On top of all of these wonderful attributes, the XB-1 simply looks fabulous. It's sleek, it's modern, and will help connect people and places with ease.

It has to be noted that Boom isn't the first or only company working on supersonic aircraft — NASA's X-59 supersonic jet, designed by Lockheed Martin, is planned to fly as of 2021 and will be much quieter than Concorde.

There are 3 things that are required to attain superpower
1. Strong institutions; do you expect Nigeria to suddenly develop all her institutions within 60? Pls, do not mention Singapore or Taiwan etc, these are nations less than Ekiti. They are easier to govern.

2. Intelligence population. Nigeria has both. The shortcomings at the moment is that intelligent people are not being engaged in the affairs of the nation, but things are changing.

3. Security

You are right. The most important thing is educating the poor. Bigger nations have a lot of opportunity. If you are into business, you would have more patronage and profit. If you have schools, etc, you would have more students. Imagine if Ekiti, Anambra, etc are countries on their own. Nigeria for example, you can set up a business targeting N1 profit with 2-4 millions users per/week compares that to a nation of a mere 10m people

Foreign AffairsPeople Around The Globe Are Divided In Their Opinions Of China by Jacseyi(op): 6:49am On Dec 23, 2019
As the People’s Republic of China celebrates the 70th anniversary of its founding, it gets mixed reviews from people around the world, according to Pew Research Center’s latest Global Attitudes survey. A median of 40% across the 34 countries surveyed have a favorable opinion of China, compared with a median of 41% who have an unfavorable opinion.

And, while majorities in most countries agree China’s influence on the world stage has grown markedly, this has not necessarily translated into favorable views of the country, according to the survey of 38,426 people conducted May 13 to Oct. 2, 2019.

Opinion of China across most of Western Europe is, on balance, negative. While 51% in Greece have a positive view of China, pluralities or majorities in all other Western European countries have an unfavorable view, ranging from 53% in Spain to 70% in Sweden. The share of people who evaluate China positively have also dropped by double-digits in nearly half of the Western European countries surveyed, including Sweden (down 17 percentage points), the Netherlands (-11 points) and the UK (-11). Only in Greece and Italy has opinion improved.

Compared with 2018, fewer in North America, parts of Western Europe and Asia-Pacific view China favorablyCentral and Eastern Europeans are somewhat more divided in their assessments. More Bulgarians, Poles and Lithuanians have favorable than unfavorable views of China, and Hungarians are nearly evenly divided. Conversely, a plurality of Slovaks and a majority of Czechs have unfavorable views of China.

Negative views of China predominate in both the United States and Canada, where 60% and 67% respectively see the country unfavorably. In both countries, this is the highest unfavorable opinion of China recorded in the Center’s polling history. (For more on U.S. opinion, see “U.S. Views of China Turn Sharply Negative Amid Trade Tensions.”) It also reflects the largest year-on-year change in either country. For example, in Canada, unfavorable opinion increased 22 points in the wake of the high-profile arrest of technology company Huawei’s chief financial officer and the ensuing Chinese detainment of two Canadian nationals who still remain in Chinese custody.

China also receives unfavorable marks from most of its neighbors in the Asia-Pacific region. In Japan, 85% say they have an unfavorable opinion of China – the most negative among all countries surveyed. Negative views of China up sharply in Canada, U.S.More than half in South Korea (63%), Australia (57%) and the Philippines (54%) share this sentiment. Opinion of China has also fallen across the region over the course of Pew Research Center’s polling and is now hovering at or near historic lows in each of the countries surveyed. In Indonesia, the change over the past year has been particularly stark, falling 17 percentage points.

Russians stand out for having the most positive view of China across all countries surveyed (71% favorable). A majority in Ukraine, too, share these views (57%).

Majorities or pluralities in almost all the Middle Eastern, Latin American and sub-Saharan African countries surveyed have a favorable view of China, including 70% who have a favorable opinion in Nigeria.

Younger people tend to have a more positive stance on China across most of the countries surveyed. In 19 countries, adults ages 18 to 29 have more favorable views than those 50 and older. In Brazil, for example, two-thirds (67%) of younger adults have a favorable view of China, while just 40% of older adults share that opinion. Large age gaps also exist in Lithuania (where younger adults’ views are 25 points more favorable), Mexico (+23 points), Indonesia (+21), Australia (+21), Poland (+21) and Ukraine (+20).

However, in many countries, those 50 and older are also less likely to offer any opinion of China. About a third or more of older adults in Indonesia, India, Ukraine, Argentina, Mexico, Tunisia and Brazil give no opinion when it comes to China.

PhonesHuawei's Mate 30 And 5G Hardware No Longer Use American Components by Jacseyi(op): 5:36pm On Dec 03, 2019
The US might broaden its sanctions on Huawei

Why it matters: Because of the US government’s sanctions on Huawei, the company’s Mate 30 series doesn’t have access to Google’s apps and services, but that’s not all: the handsets contains no components that originate from America.

With the Chinese giant placed on an entity list last May, US companies are not allowed to do business with Huawei without a license from the government. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, the effects of the ban were illustrated through a teardown by UBS and Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, a Japanese tech firm, which shows a total lack of any US hardware in the Mate 30.

As expected, Huawei has turned to suppliers outside of the US when sourcing components for the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, which are only available in a few countries.

Instead of using audio amplifiers from Cirrus Logic, they now come from the Netherlands' NXP. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, meanwhile, come from Huawei’s own HiSilicon semiconductor division, rather than Broadcom. Components from other companies, including Japan’s Murata and Taiwan’s MediaTek, are also being used over those from the usual US firms.

UBS: Huawei's internalization effort looks to have progressed faster than expected, as we now see some Huawei 4G models (Y9 Prime 2019 and Mate 30) which are not using any US components anymore

h/t @WigglesPalmer pic.twitter.com/WVAfCi54kU

— Sally Shin (@sallyshin) 2 December 2019
"Huawei has always sought to use component suppliers from right around the world in order to source the best possible technology for our consumers," a Huawei spokesperson told Gizmodo Australia. "If we are unable to source components from certain countries then we know that we can find those components from suppliers in other markets. Putting our consumers first and delivering meaningful innovation has always been our top priority, regardless of the challenges we face."

Additionally, Huawei told the Journal that all of its 5G hardware “is now America free.”

“We would like to continue using American components,” a spokesperson said. “It’s good for Huawei. That has been taken out of our hands.”

While the US recently said it was starting to process applications from businesses for licenses to sell to Huawei, what appears to be a conflicting report from Reuters suggests the ban could be broadened, prohibiting Huawei from buying components from overseas companies that are allied with the US.

PoliticsHuman Extinction Is Extremely Likely by Jacseyi(op): 7:01pm On Nov 30, 2019
Human Extinction Is Extremely Likely: And people don't seem all that bothered by the possibility.

Forget nuclear weapons, biological warfare, and the slew of other ways humanity could cause its own destruction for a moment.

If you take into account only naturally occurring phenomena — supervolcanic eruptions, asteroid impacts, and the like — researchers from the University of Oxford recently determined that the probability of our entire species going extinct in any given year is as high as one in 14,000.

Now consider this: In October, a separate team from Oxford published its own paper on human extinction in the journal Scientific Reports — and it found that people don’t seem to see the loss of humanity as uniquely tragic.

The second group of researchers asked more than 2,500 people in the United States and the United Kingdom to rank three possible scenarios from best to worst: no major catastrophe, a catastrophe that wipes out 80 percent of the human population, and a catastrophe that causes complete human extinction.

As you might expect, most people ranked no catastrophe as the best possibility and complete human extinction as the worst. But when asked to think about the difference in “badness” between the possibilities, most people were more bothered by the possibility of losing 80 percent of humanity than losing all of it.

“Thus, when asked in the most straightforward and unqualified way,” the researchers wrote, “participants do not find human extinction uniquely bad.”

When the researchers switched the whole scenario to focus on an animal species, though, survey respondents saw the loss of all zebras as worse than the loss of 80 percent of zebras.

The issue, it seems, is that survey respondents focused a lot on the individual human lives lost in scenario two — and how the deaths might affect those left behind — rather than on the loss of humanity as a whole.

In other words, we tend to think of a world without any zebras as more tragic than a world in which most zebras die. But for humankind, most people believe the reverse.

There was a way to get survey respondents to consider the loss of our entire species as uniquely bad, though: the researchers just had to tell them humanity would be missing out on a long future existence that was “better than today in every conceivable way.”

While there’s seemingly little we could do to prevent an asteroid impact or a volcanic eruption, humanity does have a say in whether we fall victim to nuclear war and the like — and knowing that people are more likely to care about our species’ potential downfall if they’re feeling optimistic about our future could play a role in making sure we don’t go down one of those self-destructive paths.

“People are going to have a lot of influence over what we’re going to do [about the threats of human extinction in our near future],” Stefan Schubert, co-author of the survey paper, recently told Vox. “So it’s important to find out how people think about them.”
