The Police in Katsina State have arrested a man for allegedly making love to a horse. Alhaji Usman Abdullahi, Katsina State Commissioner of Police, disclosed this on Thursday in Katsina while briefing newsmen.

He said that the man was arrested two days ago at night near Polo Ground in Katsina by a police patrol team. ‘’Our policemen on patrol went to the area and saw a motorcycle parked. ‘’Our officers became suspicious, while searching the area, they cited the man behind a wall naked making love to a horse.

‘’It is unfortunate for a human being to make love to an animal,’’ he said. Abdullahi further said that the police recently arrested four persons over alleged drug abuse and trafficking.

According to him, the suspects tried to bribe the police with N100,000, but the police rejected their offer. He said that the suspects would be charged to court.

Abdullahi urged parents, religious leaders and other stakeholders to intensify efforts toward inculcating moral values in their children.(NAN)

THE Nigerian Army Unit Commander stationed at Ovre-Eku community, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Delta State, Lt. E. D. Oworobo, has told a police source that the reason he ordered his men to flog the women who had embarked on a peaceful protest over a disputed land claimed by PRESCO Oil Company, was because they attempted to disarm his men.

Oworobo and his men of the 4th Brigade Command, Benin-City, Edo State, had last Wednesday, flogged and kicked hundreds of women protesting at Ovre-Eku (Iwevbo) community over a land which had been in dispute for years between Edo and Delta states.

The source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Oworobo had contacted the District Officer, DO, of Eku Police station, Mr. Andrew Efejedia, in an attempt to exonerate himself and his men of any wrong doing in the incident, where he claimed that he had no option than to order his men to use minimal force to disperse the protesters who had tried to disarm his men.

According to the source, Oworobo had asked the DO, “Don’t you know it is a crime to carry a charm according to the Criminal Code of Nigeria?”

Meanwhile, Lt. Oworobo has also threatened to deal with the Warri correspondents of The Authority and The Nation newspapers, Theophilus Onojeghen and Bolaji Ogundele, both of whom had contacted him to know what actually transpired between his men and the protesting women.

The offence of the journalists was their temerity to contact him for the military’s side of the incident. In separate reactions to the journalists, an angry Lt Oworobo had described them as idiots and madmen, allegedly saying:

“You’re an idiot. You’re a mad­ man. Why are you calling me? So I should report to you abi? Who are you to call me? If you ever call me in your life, I’ll deal mercilessly with you.”

The National Agency For Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday destroyed expired malt extract and glucose belonging to Guinness Nigeria Plc.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the destruction took place at a dump site at Otta, Ogun.

A NAFDAC staff on site, who preferred anonymity, said, “this is a case which has been concluded.

Guinness has been given permission to destroy the expired raw materials belonging to them while we supervise.“We have two products, the malt extracts in drums and glucose in packs.

“We have worked for three days and I still see us working till the next one week.`On the first day, we had a simulation test with a truck of each of the materials to see how the process would go.’’

On the quantity of raw materials to be destroyed, the staff said “each truck has 18 bags for the glucose and another truck of 72 drums of malt extract.

“We destroyed five trucks of malt extract yesterday, with each containing 72 drums of malt extract and 10 trailers of glucose with each containing 18 bags.

“Today, we are here with five trucks of the drums of malt extract and 10 trailers of the bags of glucose and we have about 2,600 of the drums.

Mr Ernest Abu, Manager at Guinness said “the exercise is based on a resolution between NAFDAC and Guinness. I am only on ground to ensure that the destruction goes according to acceptable safety standards.’’

NAFDAC had on Nov. 9, 2015, written a letter on `Payment of Administrative Charges for Various Clandestine Violations’ to the Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria Plc.

The agency stated that the company had been involved in clandestine violations contrary to the rules, regulations and enactments of NAFDAC and consequently fined Guinness one billion naira.

The fine was for administrative charges for all the destruction carried out by the company without authorization and supervision of NAFDAC.

The letter said some of the regulatory infractions included, “All the revalidation of expired products without authorisation and supervision of the agency.

It also included the “failure to secure the gates of the warehouse as it is permanently opened to intrusion and exposure to the elements and rodents which invariably affect the integrity of Guinness’ raw materials.

Others were the poor documentation record and noncompliance with conditions contained in the certificate of the re-validated malt extract.

This required the storage of the items in cool and dry place and elimination of exposure to sunlight.

In view of the above, NAFDAC mandated Guinness to disclose all warehouses in the country and submit inventory level of the stock.

Other included the submission of a written voluntary consent of forfeiture for destruction of the expired and re-validated raw materials discovered in the warehouse.

Also, the submission of a notarised undertaking to comply with all the guidelines, rules, regulations and enactments of the agency and to refrain from any future violations was required.

A source at NAFDAC had told NAN that the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC had gone on site to inspect the warehouse in question and discovered acts that violated NAFDAC’s mandate.

The company was subsequently fined and told to comply within two weeks of receipt of the letter sent to them.

However, an investigation by NAN had revealed that the packs of most of the raw material in the warehouse inspected by NAFDAC were covered by dust and some of the packs of sugar were torn and open.

Some blue barrels of the malt extract had expired best before/due dates of 04/2015 and 06/2015 while some barrels had white papers on them with an `extend to’ dates that were not approved by NAFDAC.

In reaction, management of Guinness Nigeria had issued a release saying that they were not aware of their infringements.

“The management of Guinness Nigeria does not fully understand the basis for the computation of the administrative charges or the particular regulations alleged to have been infringed.

`We are in discussions with NAFDAC with a view to gaining better clarity on the issue and hopefully have it resolved.

“We remain committed to working with NAFDAC and other regulatory authorities.

“This is in furtherance of our responsibility to produce and market quality products and look forward to being able to resolve the issue working in partnership with NAFDAC’’, the statement had said. (NAN)

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has confirmed the death of 10 persons and the rescue of another 10 in Tuesday’s building collapse in the State.

LASEMA made the disclosure when DAILY POST returned to the scene at about 4pm.

Our correspondent had visited the scene early in the morning, few hours after the building caved in.

The five-storey structure located at the end of Kushenla road, Chisco bus stop, Ikate Elegushi, Lekki in Lagos, is being developed by Lekki Gardens.

LASEMA General Manager, Mr Michael Akindele, told DAILY POST at the site of the scene that the agency received the news few minutes after the collapse.

“We received calls informing us of the collapse at about 4:40am this morning on our 767 and 112 emergency lines,” he recalled.

“Immediately, LASEMA and other responders including the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Red Cross, National Emergency Agency, RRS, Nigeria Police, FRSC, NSCDC, and DSS, mobilized and quickly commenced search and rescue operation as well as security of the area.

“As I speak to you now, 10 male have been recovered and confirmed dead. 10 were rescued alive, including the male you witnessed being brought out. Their remains are with the Lagos State Environment Health Monitoring Unit and will be moved to Mainland Hospital morgue.

“We are working assiduously to get to ground zero to ensure there are no body, dead or alive, trapped under the debris”, he added.

Asked if he had likely figure of those still trapped, Akindele said “We cannot confirm the total number of persons inside the building when the sad incident occurred.”

Earlier, local residents who trooped to the scene said the disaster had long been expected as the developer, Lekki Gardens, allegedly built ongoing and completed houses in the area “in a speedy manner”.

One of the workers on site, a bricklayer, Victor Suru, a Republic of Benin citizen, told DAILY POST that the incident claimed the life of his friend.

“They owe us for months, the engineer doesn’t give us complete money. Now they are killing us. I came from Cotonou to make a living, but look at what has happened. My friend is gone”, he lamented.

Another worker, Sunday Agba, lamented how Lekki Gardens, filled water-logged lands and started building almost immediately.

“We have no choice but to work. Normally, they are supposed to leave these lands for years, before building on it. But they keep telling us to be working, even though they owe us.”​

Who’s the better footballer, Messi or Ronaldo? This debate – common among football lovers the world over – cost a life in Mumbai on Sunday. A Nigerian killed one of his countrymen at Nalasopara after their argument turned violent.

Police said the man who was killed, Obinna Michael Durumchukwa, 34, was celebrating his birthday with his friend Nwabu Chukwuma, 22, at a rented flat, when they started to argue over who the better player was — the Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo or his counterpart at Barcelona, Lionel Messi.

Durumchukwa flung a glass at Chukwuma, which missed him and broke against the wall. Chukwuma then picked up a shard of glass and cut his friend’s throat in a fit of rage, said police inspector, Kiran Kabadi of Tulinj station.

The neighbours, who heard the commotion, informed the police who rushed to the spot.

Several Nigerian nationals live in the same building.

A police team arrested the accused on the charge of murder and will produce him in court on Monday, said Kabadi.

According to the police, Durumchukwa was staying in a rented flat in Mahesh Apartments, Oswal Nagari, on Link Road, Nalasopara (east) with Chukwuma and some more friends for the past few months. Chukwuma’s visa has expired; while Durumchukwa’s passport and visa had expired two months ago.

The police are trying to find out why Durumchukwa did not renew his passport and visa. Both were celebrating the birthday with beer since morning, said the police.

He said that he was never bed-ridden as alleged but only had a surgery which was done with only his wife’s knowledge.

Alariwo also said that those making a laughing stock of him were unaware that he recently bagged a mouthwatering-endorsement deal with a telecommunications company.

He said that had further confirmed his relevance in the industry. “I laugh when some people say that I have run out of money or I am no more in the limelight.

“Anyone who says that I keep a low profile because of competition is telling a lie. I have a studio at home and I have been working. “I have enough money to fend for my family and God has been providing for me.

Former Super Eagles coach Johannes Bonfrere has argued that it was only Coach Stephen Keshi that had what it took to coach the national team. Bonfrere, was in charge when Nigeria won the Atlanta’96 Olympics gold medal, beating Argentina in the final for the gold, Africa’s first.

Bonfrere also led Nigeria into the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000. He stated that other local coaches failed because they could not give what they didn’t have in their handling of the team.

The Dutchman brought to Nigeria in 1994 by compatriot Clemens Westerhof was speaking against the background of Sunday Oliseh’s shock resignation and the subsequent appointment of Coach Samson Siasia as interim coach.

“Apart from Stephen [Keshi], the other local coaches have not succeeded because they cannot give what they don’t have to take the team higher.

“Other foreign coaches have also failed because they come with the arrogant attitude of being a world class coach and a big name to perform magic there, and that wrong notion meant they had no passion, desire and the required knowledge to succeed on the job,” Bonfrere told BBC sport.

The 69-year-old Bonfrere was sacked when Nigeria’s qualification for the 2002 World Cup was in jeopardy. He was replaced by Shaibu Amodu who successfully guided the team to the World Cup.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said that power supply through the national grid which peaked to 5000mw in past two weeks had dropped below 2,800mw due to vandalism.

Dr. Anthony Akah, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the commission disclosed this while signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Consumer Protection Council (CPC).

A statement issued on the ceremony by Dr. Usman Abba- Arabi, Head, Public Affairs Department of NERC was made available to newsmenon Wednesday in Abuja.

In the statement, Akah expressed dissatisfaction and worries over the spate of vandalism in the power sector. It stated that the NERC boss enjoined the public and the CPC to collaborate with Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and security agencies to safeguard electrical installations.

The statement also said that the NERC would soon compel the DISCOs to publish their meter deployment schedules.

It added that the publication would ensure adherence to the meter roll out plan contained in the performance agreement signed with government by the utility firms.

“Such publication will make unmetered customers to be aware of the estimated period they have to wait before they can be metered,’’

It stated It stated that NERC had issued warning to the DISCOs against wrongful estimated billings and the acts of compelling customers to buy, install and repair transformers and poles.

The statement said the MoU between, NERC and CPC was part of concerted efforts to reduce the incidence of estimated billing completely.

According to the statement, the Director General of CPC, Mrs. Modupe Atoki, commended NERC for the long standing relationship between the two agencies.

Atoki, according to the statement, expressed CPC’s cooperation and renewed effort to protect electricity consumers from abuse of their rights.

New research shows that your attitude is more important to how you do in life than your intellect.

When it comes to success, it's easy to think that people blessed with brains are inevitably going to leave the rest of us in the dust. But new research from Stanford University will change your mind (and your attitude).

Psychologist Carol Dweck has spent her entire career studying attitude and performance, and her latest study shows that your attitude is a better predictor of your success than your IQ.

Dweck found that people's core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you're challenged because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed.

People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. They outperform those with a fixed mindset, even when they have a lower IQ, because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.

Common sense would suggest that having ability, like being smart, inspires confidence. It does, but only while the going is easy. The deciding factor in life is how you handle setbacks and challenges. People with a growth mindset welcome setbacks with open arms.

According to Dweck, success in life is all about how you deal with failure. She describes the approach to failure of people with the growth mindset this way,

"Failure is information--we label it failure, but it's more like, 'This didn't work, and I'm a problem solver, so I'll try something else.'"

Regardless of which side of the chart you fall on, you can make changes and develop a growth mindset. What follows are some strategies that will fine-tune your mindset and help you make certain it's as growth oriented as possible.

Don't stay helpless. We all hit moments when we feel helpless. The test is how we react to that feeling. We can either learn from it and move forward or let it drag us down.

There are countless successful people who would have never made it if they had succumbed to feelings of helplessness:

Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star because he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas," Oprah Winfrey was fired from her job as a TV anchor in Baltimore for being "too emotionally invested in her stories," Henry Ford had two failed car companies prior to succeeding with Ford, and Steven Spielberg was rejected by USC's Cinematic Arts School multiple times.

Imagine what would have happened if any of these people had a fixed mindset. They would have succumbed to the rejection and given up hope. People with a growth mindset don't feel helpless because they know that in order to be successful, you need to be willing to fail hard and then bounce right back.

Be passionate. Empowered people pursue their passions relentlessly. There's always going to be someone who's more naturally talented than you are, but what you lack in talent, you can make up for in passion. Empowered people's passion is what drives their unrelenting pursuit of excellence.

Warren Buffet recommends finding your truest passions using, what he calls, the 5/25 technique: Write down the 25 things that you care about the most. Then, cross out the bottom 20. The remaining 5 are your true passions. Everything else is merely a distraction.

Take action. It's not that people with a growth mindset are able to overcome their fears because they are braver than the rest of us; it's just that they know fear and anxiety are paralyzing emotions and that the best way to overcome this paralysis is to take action.

People with a growth mindset are empowered, and empowered people know that there's no such thing as a truly perfect moment to move forward. So why wait for one? Taking action turns all your worry and concern about failure into positive, focused energy.

Then go the extra mile (or two).Empowered people give it their all, even on their worst days. They're always pushing themselves to go the extra mile. One of Bruce Lee's pupils ran three miles every day with him. One day, they were about to hit the three-mile mark when Bruce said, "Let's do two more."

His pupil was tired and said, "I'll die if I run two more." Bruce's response? "Then do it." His pupil became so angry that he finished the full five miles. Exhausted and furious, he confronted Bruce about his comment, and Bruce explained it this way:

"Quit and you might as well be dead. If you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it'll spread over into the rest of your life. It'll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there; you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level."

If you aren't getting a little bit better each day, then you're most likely getting a little worse--and what kind of life is that?

Expect results. People with a growth mindset know that they're going to fail from time to time, but they never let that keep them from expecting results. Expecting results keeps you motivated and feeds the cycle of empowerment. After all, if you don't think you're going to succeed, then why bother?

Be flexible. Everyone encounters unanticipated adversity. People with an empowered, growth-oriented mindset embrace adversity as a means for improvement, as opposed to something that holds them back. When an unexpected situation challenges an empowered person, they flex until they get results.

Don't complain when things don't go your way. Complaining is an obvious sign of a fixed mindset. A growth mindset looks for opportunity in everything, so there's no room for complaints.

THESE certainly are not the best of times for former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. On Wednesday, February 17, 2016, the tranquillity of Otuoke community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State was shattered following the brazen abduction of the ex-President’s foster father and nephew by heavily armed gunmen.

The incident has created fear among the people. Surprisingly, it was the second time in two years that the 72-year-old Chief Inengite Nitabai, a prominent figure and former lecturer at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, would be.

The kidnappers gained access to his residence through a nearby creek, a little distance from a military check-point. Two days after, the decomposing body of the nephew, Samuel Oki, 35, was found. Already, joint security forces are combing the creeks and other hideouts to fish out the perpetrators.

Lately, both the federal and state governments have been grappling with the seeming intractable challenge of kidnapping across the country. Some notable citizens have fallen victim.

A former President of the Nigeria Bar Association NBA, Chief Okey Wali (SAN) and one-time Secretary to the Government of the Federation cum ex-presidential candidate, Chief Olu Falae, were among those kidnapped. Despite series of arrests made so far, there is no let-up in the activities of the criminal gangs.

We, therefore, unequivocally condemn the kidnap of the septuagenarian uncle of ex-President Jonathan’s family and deeply regret the death of the nephew. The sheer criminality is a frightening reflection of the vulnerability of our leaders past and present, as well as their family members.

If close relations of the country’s immediate past president could be abducted so cheaply from their homes, the situation calls for  serious concern. It increases the vulnerability of ordinary Nigerians who have no one to look up to.

Former President Jonathan and his family, both nuclear and extended, deserve adequate protection at all times. Such individuals have become increasingly targeted by kidnappers. Unless something is done, we may wake up one day to hear that a former president of this country is in the den of kidnappers.

And if it can happen to Jonathan, it may happen to any of the former leaders. Hence, we urge the security agents to intensify their efforts and get to the roots of the kidnapping syndicates. The kingpins must be identified and their criminal rings smashed.

We call on the federal government to do everything within its means to reassure citizens of their safety. Also, government at all levels should collaborate in finding solutions to the growing army of unemployed youths that the country is breeding.

Without this being done, the rash of violent crimes will continue to skyrocket until it gets to a breaking point.

Obaganya community, a suburb in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, was thrown into deep mourning yesterday after a middle-aged man, Echeno Adakole, beheaded his 50-year-old step-mother, Titi Enokela, allegedly for ritual purpose.

Vanguard learned that the suspect allegedly ambushed the victim at a family farm settlement, hit her with a piece of wood and cut off her head. He thereafter wrapped it with the dead woman’s cloth and put it in a polyethylene bag.

According to the source, “family members noticed that the woman had not returned from the farm and it was getting dark. Her children and other family members went looking for her; they found her headless body tucked away in a corner of the family farm.

“They all raced back home wailing and crying for help, only to discover the severed head of the woman with her step-son, who was acting strange and making moves to flee from home.”

The source said the suspect was held by a mob, who attempted to lynch him but for the quick intervention of police, who took him away.

“As a result of tension in the community, the Police Area Command hurriedly moved the suspect out of the area to the State Command Headquarters in Makurdi,” he added.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu, confirmed the story, saying the command was still investigating the matter.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), yesterday attributed the fresh nationwide fuel scarcity on non-availability of petrol for the marketers to load from petrol depots.

The association’s Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Dankigari, who spoke to The Nation on telephone yesterday, disclosed that members of the association have 8,000 pending tickets unloaded.

He revealed that over the past few weeks, private depots owners have been selling petrol at a price higher than the official N77 per litre to marketers, lamenting that the depots have all gone dry.

Concurrently, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, has cautioned depot owners against selling petrol above the approved ex-depot price of N77 per litre.

Its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ohi Alegbe in a statement yesterday said the warning came as a result of repeated complaints by marketers of sharp practices at the depots.

The statement quoted Kachikwu as warning that depot owners found to be involved in selling products above the approved ex-depot prices would be severely sanctioned.

Dankigari, however, blamed the fuel scarcity on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that is responsible for the importation of 78 per cent of the product to the country.

He said: “The issue is that even where we are loading, there is no product. We already have more than 8,000 tickets but we have not been able to load.

“Even the private depots that used to sell the products at a higher rate no longer have the product to sell. So, that is the reason why you have been seeing those queues. The NNPC is only agency of government responsible for bringing the products into the country.”

It would be recalled that IPMAN had in the penultimate week raised the alarm over the another fresh round of fuel scarcity as private depot owners were selling petrol for N97 per litre to marketers.

Last week, the association further lamented that the depot owners had increased the price to N102 instead of N77 per litre.

This, according to Dakingari, stood as a huge hindrance to the marketers who avoided purchasing a product for N102 per litre and selling N86.50 per litre.

Many petrol stations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were yesterday shut, a situation that disrupted vehicular traffic in the city.

Alegbe has assured enough supply of petrol as it took delivery of four more cargoes of the product at the weekend.

“The NNPC has stepped up collaboration with the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) and other downstream industry players to end the resurgence of fuel queues in some major cities across the country especially in Lagos and its environs,” Alegbe explained.

The NNPC stated that it has secured the commitment of the leadership of MOMAN for effective collaboration in this regard and assured that the queues will disappear in few days as supplies are ramped up across the country.

“To achieve this, truck-out to filling stations in the Lagos area has been increased from the regular 245 to 295 trucks per day (9.7 million) while truck-out to fuel stations in Abuja from Suleja depot has been stepped up to 210 trucks per day (6.9million litres) from the regular supply of 160 trucks per day.

“Similar increment in supply volume has been activated in the Port Harcourt, Calabar, Kano and Kaduna areas to ensure seamless availability of petroleum products across every nook and cranny of the country,” he said.

While begging for understanding and support from members of the public, the NNPC maintained that all hands are on deck to end the prevailing challenges experienced by motorists, commuters and the general public in accessing petrol.

“Within the last 48 hours we have received six cargoes of petrol (270 million litres) and beginning from 1st March, 2016 we shall begin to receive one cargo of petrol every day (45 million litres),’’ NNPC assured.

The NNPC also said Dr. Kachikwu has directed the full activation of an Intra-Ministerial Joint Monitoring Task Force made up of officials of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), and the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) to ensure and enforce compliance to laid down rules and regulations governing the supply and distribution of petroleum products.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and sports kits manufacturing company NIKE have concluded arrangements to redesign the national team jerseys, Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF General Secretary, said on Monday.

Sanusi said in Abuja that NIKE would supply newly-designed jerseys to the national teams later this year.

He said the national teams had a single design jersey under the new contract with NIKE because the company gave NFF only what it had left in stock last year.

“The NIKE contract which was signed in 2015 is going to be more operational in 2016. “In 2015, they made us to understand that there were no kits and, instead of us going to the market to buy, we decided to manage what they had in stock, which was better for us at that moment.

“But for 2016, NIKE has come up with new designs which are beautiful and attractive, better than what we used for our matches in 2015.

“But, from what they told us, we will get the new designs in large quantity this year. “I want to assure that what NIKE has in stock for Nigeria this year will be far better than what we had last year.

“ This is because we will have new designs now, which we will be using from this year,’’ the NFF General Secretary said.

Sanusi, who did not mention when the consignment would arrive in the country, urged Nigerians to appreciate NIKE for partnering with the NFF when Adidas failed to renew its partnership.

He regretted the negative reports the contract generated, saying the situation was blown out of proportion. The NFF official said the negative media reports about the contract almost led to NIKE’s withdrawal from the partnership.

“The NIKE contract issue has been over blown, to the extent it almost pushed the company away from the country.

This is not good. “As Nigerians, we should not be talking about the contract in a negative way because if we push them away from Nigeria, it means we will have to buy jerseys from the market,’’ he said.

NAN reports that NIKE, in a letter sent to the NFF, had expressed its intention to review the partnership in January. It had requested the NFF to furnish it information on the need to strengthen the partnership.

NAN reports that the contract between NFF and NIKE was described by some football stakeholders as a “slave contract’’ as it did not come with retainers fees.

Since the deal was sealed by both parties, the country’s national teams have witnessed a shortage of training and match kits. In international matches played, Nigerian players were unable to exchange jerseys with opponents due to the short supply of the jerseys.

NAN recalls that the national under-23 male team to the 2015 African Games in Congo was reported to have used only one set of jerseys. This was said to have led to team officials washing them after each match, ahead of the next game.

NAN reports that NFF signed the new partnership deal with NIKE to run from April 1, 2015 to 2018 after the expiration of the deal with Adidas.

The NIKE deal is worth $750,000 in the first year, with NIKE supplying kits worth $1 million to Nigeria in the year 2017 and 2018.

The partnership was expected to see the American sports brand design and develop football kits for both the country’s male and female national football teams until 2018.

Barcelona’s Twitter feed shared a short video of the Argentine star scoring an improbable goal during a kick-about in a training session with his team-mates.

The clip is filmed at Barcelona’s training ground where the players are enjoying a light-hearted kick-around with visiting Italian musician, Eros Ramazzotti.

After some playful keepy ups, the singer challenges Messi to put the ball into the back of the net from their position 25 yards behind the goal.

The playmaker duly obliges by stroking the ball on a near perfect arch, bouncing just before the near post before spinning sideways into the back of the net.

A Kenyan couple had an unhappy Valentine’s Day weekend after Duncan Moseti attacked his wife’s breasts and then cut off his own penis.

The 24-year-old Thika resident became convinced his wife was cheating and thought the best solution was to cut off his manhood.

“He said he had reliable information that I was having an affair with his brother,” wife Margaret Achieng said, according toStandard, a Kenyan digital news source.

Achieng cooked dinner and the couple of two years retired to bed, but the mother of one woke up around 3 a.m. Saturday morning after feeling a sharp pain in her chest.

“On checking, I saw my husband cutting my breast using a knife. I pushed him away and screamed for help. He then threatened to kill our baby and chop off his private parts,” she said.

The freaked-out 20-year-old ran to get the neighbors and the returned to find Moseti surrounded by a pool of blood — he’d chopped off his penis and chucked it out the window.

“We were shocked by the act since they have been living in peace. There has never been any sign of domestic violence since they came here early this month,” said neighbor Lydia Mwikali.

Margaret Achieng’s husband attacked her and then cut off his own penis.

Hospital medical staff later determined that the poor man’s anatomy couldn’t be reattached.

“His private parts cannot be re-attached back to their place since he took long to get medical attention from the time he chopped them off,” a nurse said.

“He is, however, in a stable condition.”

Achieng’s cuts were not deep, so she survived the ordeal, too.

Moseti’s brother denied having an affair, calling the allegations “malicious” and “mere propaganda.’ He also said that his sibling was having “problems” and had tried to kill himself last year.

Can you just imagine that

The Federal Government has accused the immediate past National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, of avoiding trial in order to keep “the magnitude” of his alleged wrongs against the country away from the public.

It stated this in a counter-affidavit which it filed before a Federal High Court in Abuja in opposition to an application by Dasuki seeking an order discharging him from further standing trial on charges of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms instituted against him.

The ex-NSA had predicated his application on the grounds of Federal Government’s alleged “brazen” disobedience of a series of orders of court granting him bail.

He urged the court in his application to discharge him and prohibit the Federal Government from further prosecuting him on the grounds that his re-arrest by the DSS was tantamount to Federal Government’s alleged act of assault on the court which had released him on bail.

The Federal Government, through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation is prosecuting Dasuki before Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court in Abuja on four counts of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms.

In its counter-affidavit to Dasuki’s application filed by the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), the Federal Government denied the allegation of disobeying the order granting bail to Dasuki with respect to the case.

A lawyer in Okpeseyi’s firm, Emmanuel Ikpebe, who deposed to the counter-affidavit, stated that while the prosecution was ready to proceed with the case, Dasuki was allegedly reluctant to go on in order to keep the details of his wrongs from the public.

The counter-affidavit stated, “That the respondent (FG) is willing and ready to proceed to prove the case with the order of this court at the last hearing on January 20, 2016 fixing the case for definite hearing.

“That I know that the applicant is not interested in facing his trial before this court.

“That I also know that the applicant is averse to general public knowing the magnitude of the wrongs against the Nigeria state he has been charged with in court.”

The prosecution insisted that Dasuki was re-arrested because of “multiple criminal cases” pending against him in different courts.

On Tuesday, at the resumed hearing before Justice Ademola at the Federal High Court, both the prosecution and the defence disagreed on the alleged violation of the order granting bail to Dasuki.

Dasuki maintained a blank facial expression while seated in the dock throughout the Tuesday’s proceedings.

His lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), insisted before Justice Ademola that the Federal Government had violated the court’s order granting bail to his client.

He said his application sought to prohibit the Federal Government from continuing to prosecute his client, adding that by further indulging the prosecution, which was allegedly in contempt of the orders of the court, to go on with the case, would amount to “mockery of the judiciary” and “an assault on the rule of law.”

He asked for an adjournment to file a response to the prosecution’s reply to his client’s application.

But in response, prosecuting counsel, Okpeseyi, opposed the application for adjournment as he also denied the allegation of disobeying court order.

But in his ruling, Justice Ademola granted the application for adjournment and directed that the defence should file its final reply within seven days.

The judge adjourned till March 3 and directed that the prosecution must produce the ex-NSA in court at the next sitting and subsequent ones.

The judge also said he would deliver a pending ruling on an application by the prosecution for witness protection on March 3.

A man has been arrested by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in Borno State for allegedly defrauding Internally Displaced Persons in the state to the tune of N2.7m.

The Corps State Commandant, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, said the suspect was arrested while selling fake forms to some IDPs in Maiduguri, claiming to use the form to provide relief materials for the displaced persons.

He said, “The suspects have sold a total of 9,000 forms to the IDPs in some camps across Maiduguri at the cost of N300 each, promising them that they will be provided with special relief materials from Abuja.”

Ibrahim added that the suspect, with some of his collaborators now on the run, “engaged the services of some agents in the camps, to deceive the IDPs that special relief materials will be brought to them from Abuja after filling the forms with their passport photographs attached.”

He vowed to interrogate the suspect before handing him over to appropriate authorities for prosecution.

He however advised those living in the IDP camps to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons to security agencies.

Similarly, the commandant said his men also arrested a currency counterfeiter while trying to buy some goods in a shop. He said the suspect was arrested following a tip-off. He said the suspects used fake currency of N1,000 denomination worth N500,000.

He said the suspect was undergoing interrogation by his corps.

“The fraudsters try as much as they can to avoid shop owners, only to go behind them and deceive their boys, as most of them cannot differentiate between the genuine notes and fake ones,” he explained, urging the public to be vigilant.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said that over two million Nigerians had been displaced by the Boko Haram sect.

He regretted that about 70 per cent of the Internally Displaced Persons are women and children.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement quoted Buhari as speaking while receiving the Greek Medical Charity organisation, also known as “Heart Doctors” at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari regretted that 60 per cent of the children at various IDPs are orphaned.

He therefore called on Non-Governmental Organisations and international aid agencies to complement the Federal Government’s efforts to increase humanitarian assistance to IDPs.

The President said the government was working hard to secure and rehabilitate communities ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgents.

He said, “It is a pathetic situation we have. There are more than two million displaced persons, 70 per cent of whom are women and children. Of these, 60 per cent are orphaned children.

“We are willing to work with organisations such as yours to quickly rehabilitate infrastructure, rebuild schools, medical clinics and destroyed homes.”

Buhari told his guests that the task of rehabilitating IDPs in the region was enormous, but noted that with perseverance and commensurate resources such challenges would be surmounted.

He thanked the Greek doctors for their humanitarian activities in the country and assured them that his administration would welcome other public-spirited individuals and organisations with similar intentions.
