https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Kashim-shettima.jpg The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has said despite the insurgency in the state, Maiduguri, the state capital, is safer than Lagos, Abuja and most state capitals in the country. He stated this in Bauchi on Tuesday while addressing the Batch B National Youth Service Corps members deployed in Borno State, who are undergoing their orientation in Bauchi State. The 1,387 corps members, deployed in Borno State, were sworn in on November 28 at their camp in Bauchi. Shettima, while assuring them that Borno State was now peaceful, said, “With all sense of responsibility and honesty, am saying that the worst in Maiduguri is over. Borno is now on the path to sustainable peace. “Maiduguri is now safe even more than Lagos, Abuja and many other state capitals in Nigeria.” He added that the Federal Government and the state government were working to maintain the peace in the state as the fight against insurgency was getting to an end. The governor stated that despite some differences among Nigerians, they shared and were tied to a common destiny of making Nigeria great. He noted that despite the seeming ideological, political and religious diversity of Nigerians, they should strive to ensure unity among themselves, which, he said, was the only way to put the country on the path of development. Shettima informed the corps members that he was happy with their determination to serve their country by leaving their comfort zones and serving in the state. He said the NYSC scheme would open their eyes to the reality of national coexistence, adding that the future of Nigeria rests on the shoulder of the youth. The governor promised to provide necessary assistance to the corps members, including an increase in their allowances and the provision of decent accommodation. He commended the Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, for accommodating Borno State corps members and the assistance rendered to them. The Borno State NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Lawal Turawa, said the prompt intervention of the Bauchi State governor, which led to the relocation of the corps members to the new camp, saved what would have been an ugly situation. Turawa informed the governor that the Borno NYSC lacked staff accommodation and utility vehicles, appealing to the governor to help in the rehabilitation of staff accommodation, which he said had not been renovated since 1995. https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/MMM.jpg Access Bank Nigeria Plc has warned its customers to avoid dealing with Mavrodi Mondial Movement, a Ponzi scheme, which has been declared illegal by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The bank in an emailed statement to its customers said it had come to its attention “that some customers are engaged in the Ponzi scheme called ‘MMM’”. “Please be advised that this scheme is not in line with any applicable or known investment product and may ultimately lead to loss of funds in the long run,” the bank warned. “We advise that customers avail themselves of genuine and approved investments and products in the Nigerian banking environment.” However, NE gathered that despite the warning by the Federal Government, thousands of Nigerians have continued to patronize the scheme with its website ranking as one of the five most visited in the country, ahead of Facebook. https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/elrufai-777x437.jpg Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has accused the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) also known as the Shiites Islamic sect of refusing to recognize Muhammadu Buhari as the President of the country as well as their failure to recognize him as the Governor of the state. El-Rufai gave the statement while speaking with journalists on Sunday. He said that the group was outlawed by the state government because its leader Sheihk Ibrahim El Zakzaky and members have refused to respect constituted authorities and their activities amount to running a parallel government against the state. The Governor says the state received the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that looked into the clashes between the IMN and army which concluded that the IMN poses a threat to the peace, security and good governance of Kaduna State. “The IMN does not recognise the constitution of Nigeria, they do not recognise Buhari as president of Nigeria, they do not recognise me as the Governor of Kaduna state. Because they have their governor, yes, they had, I think he was killed during the clash.” He said the IMN apart from being an illegal religious organisation, was in the habit of harassing and intimidating members of the public with impunity for several years. https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Rice.jpg The current economic recession in the country occasioned by the fall in the prices of oil in the international market has dealt a devastating blow on Nigerians. Following the depreciation of the naira against the dollar among other economic challenges, Nigerian families now grapple with astronomical prices of essential commodities in the country. Everybody is complaining. Families are particularly groaning under the high price of food items which have increased by 100 per cent from last year. According to a distraught man in Lagos, “We never had it this bad in this country. My family can no longer afford three square meals in a day. We have all along been getting food items on credit. But the foodstuff sellers are now tired of us, our neighbours and friends are also tired of us begging them for food. Everybody is really lamenting these hard times and the high prices of food items in the country”. Staple foods such as rice, beans, cassava flakes are now slipping out of the hands of average Nigerians. Market survey conducted in some markets in Lagos reveal that the prices of some foodstuffs are now three times higher than what they used to be in 2015. Although, the prices of the food items in some of the markets differ the difference is just minimal. For instance, the price of rice, beans, cassava flakes, palm oil, groundnut oil, pepper in Mile 12 market is different from the price in Mushin-Olosha, Oyingbo, Cele-Ijesha, Abule Egba, Iyana-Iba, Okomaiko among others According to a trader at Mile 12 market, “there is no fixed price for the foodstuffs, people just sell according to what they buy and that is why the prices are not the same. Investigation revealed that presently, a 50k bag of rice, is sold at the rate of nineteen thousand naira (N19,000) while the same bag of rice was sold for eight thousand, five hundred naira last year. Also, a bag of beans is now thirty nine thousand naira (39000) but in 2015, it was sold for twenty-one thousand five hundred naira (N21500). It was also learnt that, a bag of cassava flakes is sold at the rate of nine thousand, five hundred naira 9,500, a basket of tomatoes cost N6500, a bag of Tatashe pepper is sold at N3500, and a bag of Rodo pepper at N4500. Also, 25 litres of Groundnut oil sells for N14,200, while palm oil of the same litre goes for N15,000. In Mushin-Olosha and Oyingbo markets, a bag of rice is sold for N19,000 while a bag of beans goes for 40,000. In the same vein, a bag of cassava flakes goes for N10,000, 25 litres of groundnut oil is sold for N14800, while palm oil is sold for N15600. A trader at Oyingbo market, Mrs. Sarumi, lamented that the level of patronage in the market has reduced due to the high price of foodstuff adding that, this has inflicted more hardship on them. Mrs. Fatimo Adeyemi, another trader said that majority of traders are facing financial crisis because most of them borrowed money from micro-finance banks to run their businesses but they are not getting returns on their investment because of low patronage. Another trader at Olosha market, Mr. Henry Ugochukwu, said his business used to yield huge profits until the recession period. One of the customers at Mile 12 market, Mrs. Dorcas Timothy, argued that, the money she spends in buying foodstuffs has doubled compared to last year. She disclosed that she used to buy a bag of rice for her family but since the price has skyrocketed, she can only buy a paint bucket of rice. A resident in Ajah area of Lagos revealed that, since the recession, feeding her family members has been major challenge saying, “what is most important to the family now is how to feed before thinking of pleasure”. He made the disclosure to newsmen during a visit to the Kaduna Refining & Petrochemical Company Limited (KRPC) in Kaduna. We are talking with Niger Ministry of petroleum. We are also talking with the Chinese Company operating in Agadam,” he said. Baru said some investors have shown interest to build another refinery of 50,000 barrels pay day capacity. “We are convincing them to come and build side by side with the Kaduna refinery. The intention is to build around Kano but we think there is greater synergy to what I have seen here. I am more convinced they will benefit from some of the utilities of Kaduna refinery,” Baru said. He said that it was important to explore alternative crude supply to Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, which has been affected by vandalism of pipelines and age. “Due to challenges with the aged refinery and crude oil pipelines that had been breached severally, the operations of the refinery has been epileptic. This, we are determined to resolve through various intervention methods including evaluation of alternative crude oil supply from Niger Republic through building of a pipelines of over 1, 000 kilometers from Agadem to Kaduna. That efforts is being championed by Mr. President himself. We have already started engagements with the Nigerien Minister of Petroleum and the Chinese that are operating the field at Agadem,” he said. Baru also pledged to sustain efforts at enhancing energy supply to power industries in Kaduna through the development of Ajaokuta-Abuja-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, as well as development of power plants in Kaduna and Abuja. “These projects will be given special attention during my tenure,” he said. The GMD disclosed that the College of Ptroleum Resources in Kaduna would start operation on Januarry 1, 2017, and thanked the state government for undertaking to construct internal roads in the school. He also urged Governor Nasir El-Rufai to sensitise resident against sabotage of the nation’s oil assets due to its adverse effect on the community, environment and national economy. Responding, El-Rufai said the corporation has assumed a new toga since Baru took over, adding that prompt remittances by the corporation to the Federation Account has remained consistent. “We are very interested in the NNPC because how well you do affects our lives as states and as a country. This is why many of us are quite gratified you are in charge, and already results are beginning to show as remittances to the Federation Account are higher, state governors are happier than before,” he said. While accusing the group of playing the script of a discredited chieftain of the party from Osun state ,Oladipo said he sympathized “with these misguided fellows on their frustration at being rejected by all well meaning leaders of the Party in Abuja due to the albatross around the neck of their lonely promoter”,he stressed. He, however, expressed high hopes in the capacity of the behind the scene efforts of genuine national Leaders of the party to finally lay to rest the unfortunate crisis bedeviling the Party. The minister assured the Senate of bringing the perpetrators to book, noting that his ministry was committed to fighting the challenge of ghost workers. https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/osinbajo-777x437.jpg Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would on Thursday visit some companies in Anambra to assess the challenges facing them in the state. The state governor, Willie Obiano, made this known to journalists in Awka on Wednesday.Obiano said the visit was against the backdrop of the presentation he made to the Federal Government after he met with the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, Anambra chapter, recently. He said the visit would enable the federal government to provide sustainability package in the areas of forex and raw material sourcing to 300 firms in the state to enable them stay afloat. According to the governor, Osinbajo would visit the major industrial hubs of the state including Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka. He said the need to help the manufacturing firms could not be farfetched as the sector alone employed about 800,000 workers. “Recently I had a meeting with manufacturers in Anambra where they made their challenges known to us and I tabled the problems in Abuja before the Federal Government and Central Bank,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the governor as saying to journalists. “On that basis, the vice president will visit the state on Thursday (November 24) and see things for himself; he will visit selected firms in Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka.” Source: http://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/2016/11/23/osinbajo-to-visit-manufacturing-firms-in-anambra/ |
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/NDLEA.jpg Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday said they arrested 11 suspects and destroyed 2, 317 bags of cannabis weighing 30,992kgs. The agency’s spokesperson, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, stated this in a statement on Friday in Lagos. He also said that some 67 bags were also transferred to Osun State Command of the agency as exhibits for further investigation. “The cannabis will also serve as evidence against 11 suspected farmers arrested during an operation inside the cannabis plantation. “The suspects arrested in connection with the cannabis cultivation are Kofi Mensah, Godwin Monday, Albert Aniama, Liberty Onyeka and Peter Nelson. “Others are Harrison Ewoka, Ossai Nelson, Sulaiman Niyi, Dominic Tobechukwu, Mutiu Kolawole and Chucks Oghenekwu. “The raid operation codenamed ‘Operation Herb Spring’ was in response to an intelligence received by the Agency on the activities of cannabis cultivators in the forest. “The exhibits was estimated to worth three hundred and nine million naira (N309million). “These exhibits were found in 27 camps used as storage facilities located within a farmland at Orita-Ijebu forest reserve, Ikoyi area of Ikire in Ayedade LGA of Osun State. “Drug cartels have invaded government forest reserves for the cultivation of cannabis,“ the spokesman said. He also quoted the Chairman of the agency, Mr Muhammad Abdallah , who said concerted efforts were needed to stop cannabis cultivation. He said that farmers should be encouraged to cultivate food and economic crops. “Unless the current trend of cannabis cultivation is addressed, the country is on the verge of a devastating food insecurity. “It is worrisome that the cartels are using government forest reserves in the cultivation of cannabis. “Stakeholders must strategise on how to increase food production and prevent criminal organisations from diverting arable farmland for cannabis cultivation. “A situation where food and cash crops is paving way for cannabis plant portend danger and deserve urgent attention. “The operation was a sweet victory for the agency because the farmers had done all the work by harvesting and processing the cannabis awaiting evacuation from the farms. “It was a perfect timing for the Agency and a painful loss to the drug barons. “They had prepared the cannabis in bags waiting for shipment when we raided. “The Agency will continue to launch similar devastating attacks on drug trafficking cartels until they are completely defeated. “All suspects will be arraigned soon,” Abdallah said. https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Buhari-looking-ill.jpg A civil society organisation, Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre, has expressed concern over what it described as “flagrant” disregard for court orders by the executive arm of government, saying, if unchecked, it could bring the judiciary to disrepute. The rights group added that it was high time President Muhammadu Buhari stopped acting like a dictator as the country was no longer in the military era. Speaking at a news conference in Lagos on Friday, HRDAC President, Rose Ameh, said it was regrettable that “impunity by men in uniform and those in government had now become a norm” which, according to her, had made Nigerians to start losing faith in the system. Citing examples, she said, “The ruling of the court (including that of the ECOWAS Court) for the release on bail of a former National Security Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.); and the order for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, were totally rebuffed by the executive. “The continued detention of the leader of the Shiite Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, is another case of shameful disregard for human rights and due process. These are indeed appalling and condemnable.” The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the group, Mr. Innocent Agbo, said the group had written to the presidency and embarked on protests, including one at the National Assembly, but that nothing had been done. https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/pdp-vs-apc.jpg The Peoples Democratic Party has said that Kogi State is currently in the hands of tyrants who have no respect for human lives as the citizens are dying daily of common ailment due to non-payment of workers’ salaries. The PDP said this at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Kogi West Senatorial district of the party held at Rekiya Ogheha Place in Lokoja on Thursday Those present at the meeting included a former Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Prince Sola Akanmode, a former Secretary to the State Government, Sola Ojo, a former PDP state chairman, Chief Hassan Salawu, Henry Ojuola, and Chief Kola Ojo, who is the Kogi West zonal chairman. Ojo, who briefed the press after the meeting, said the All Progressives Congress-led administration in the state had come to spread poverty, hardship and sickness as hundreds of people had been sent to their early graves due to poor economic management and insensitivity to the plight of the people by the government. He added, “This Yahaya Bello administration is heartless, inconsiderate, insensitive and irresponsive to the plight of Kogi civil servants, it has utterly failed the people as it is bereft of ideas on what to do to move the state forward.” Ojo said the APC was running a government of deceit and blackmail, saying the new direction policy agenda of Bello’s administration was aimed at strangulating the masses and making the poor poorer. He added that in almost a year of the administration, nothing had been done in the state except “rudderless screening.” However, the Director General, Media and Strategy to the Governor, Kingsley Fanwo, described the PDP’s position as quite paradoxical. He said, “Someone defecated on the floor and then turn around to blame the person parking it of being slow. The previous PDP administrations in the state were responsible for the rot we are trying to clean. The last government left the civil service morally broken. Months went without payment of salaries.” Fanwo said there were evidences that certain people were desperately bringing their leaders back to stifle the resolve of the present administration to reposition the state. “Governor Yahaya Bello is not expecting the PDP to be happy with his reforms and resolve to question previous administrations over how the commonwealth of the people was managed,” he said. https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Peter-side.jpg The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 governorship election in Rivers state, Dr Dakuku Peterside, has described Governor Nyesom Wike as a disaster and disgrace to everything that represents good about the state. According to Peterside, in a statement by his spokesperson, Nwaorgu Faustinus, and made available to NAIJ.com. the latest adventure of the governor to hunt perceived political opponents through phantom recommendation of a commission of inquiry ahead of the December 10 re-run election in Rivers state into the Senate is doomed and dead on arrival. Peterside noted that a statement credited to state commissioner for Information after a state executive council meeting revealed that the attorney-general had been directed to prosecute the APC deputy governorship candidate, Asita Okorie for the murder of an NYSC member at Akinima in Ahoada West local government area during the March 19, 2016 rerun legislative elections. The attorneygeneral was also directed to prosecute the APC House of Representatives candidate for Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo federal constituency, Barry Mpigi, for the alleged murder of a pregnant woman whose name was given as Mrs Baby Nzuuga in Kpite Tai area of the state. Peterside said Wike’s latest action was that of a mischievous, drowning man, clutching at anything that would make him stay afloat. He said playing smart to deceive the public and cover up his own roguery has become Wike’s trademark. “How can anyone in his right senses link Honourable Asita to death of the youth corps member. Everyone in the state knows that Governor Wike was the architect of the killings and mayhem that trailed the March re-run election in the state. “The governor was the one threatening the lives of everybody and crying everyday at every available medium. “How can a governor who orchestrated the mayhem be the judge, complainant and prosecutor in his own case? The actions of Wike are unbecoming of a state chief executive and bringing ridicule to such a revered office,” he stated. He called on the governor to follow the path of honour and rise to the challenges of governing the state or resign if he lacks the capacity, managerial acumen and temperance to deliver the expected democratic dividends. “What moral justification does Nyesom Wike have to talk about violence? Who introduced violence into the last elections? “Who connived with known militants and security agents to rig election in the state? Who has declared amnesty in the state where over 100 AK47 rifles were officially acknowledged? ““Has Wike forgotten that in connivance with militants, APC did not campaign in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo local government areas in 2015? “Never in the history of Nigeria has that happened, where citizens are unable to campaign in their own state. “If Wike has any sense of shame and conscience, he should seek for forgiveness from Rivers people and families of those who were mindlessly killed by his goons. “Rivers people are indeed in one-chance of a governor who lacks the capacity to govern the state. “No amount of propaganda, blackmail and threat will save the PDP from losing the forthcoming re-run election in the state. “Rivers people have seen through the brigandage, lies and deceit of Wike’s administration and they shall respond by voting all APC candidates,” he summed up Source: http://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/dakuku-peterside-bombs-wike-gives-governor-a-new-name/ |

He called on the Senate to drop the so-called Sharia bill, if it exists, because Nigeria is a secular state. Bishop Onwuachu who spoke with Daily Sun yesterday called on Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) not to wait until the bill is passed into law before they respond. “We are not comfortable with it at all, and we say no to Sharia. https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Suya-Seller.jpg A mallam was caught and stripped naked for reportedly stealing meat from a butcher’s shed in Enugu, recently. According to Facebook user, Egwuatu Chukz, a Hausa man was caught stealing meat from a butcher’s shed in Ogbete market, Enugu state. The Hausa man was said to have casually strolled into the shed, brought out a sack and started stuffing large chunks of meat into it, completely ignoring the fact that there were other people around. According to the butchers, they had gathered and prayed over the ‘mysterious’ disappearance of meat from their shed, one week before he was caught in the act. He was also accused of using charms to perpetrate his crime. Read what transpired according to Chukz, below: “BREAKING: NOTORIOUS HAUSA/FULANI MAN CAUGHT STEALING MEAT WITH THE AID OF CHARM IN THE POPULAR OGBETE MAIN MARKET. On 12th of November 2016 in the above named market in Enugu, Biafra land, a notorious Hausa/Fulani man was caught after stealing meat weighing over 22 pounds, at the market abattoir located at Akwata side. Information reaching the family writers, states that this Hausa/Fulani man has been perpetrating this act for a long time, only that he used to be invisible when performing the evil operations, but as God may have it, one of the largest quantities of meat got missing, before he was caught today. The butchers in the area opened up to find out what has been behind the usual missing of meat, therefore the whole meat sellers teamed up together for fasting and prayer which lasted for five days. However, after their prayer some of the meat sellers (butchers) were convinced that the regular missing of their meat wasn’t an ordinary or physical issue to tackle, so they all teamed up to be vigilant both in the realm of physical and spiritual. In the morning of Saturday 12th of November 2016, at about 8:30am, about the time the butchers display meats for sale, a young man holding a sack walked in majestically towards the place where some of the meats were packed, and began to pack meat without anybody’s consent and after loading the huge amount of meat inside the sack he came with, he raised it on his head and started walking away with the meat. After moving about 12 feet ahead, one of the meat sellers called him back, and tried to interrogate him. The Hausa/Fulani man refused to answer and this drew the attention of the audience. After several attempts to stop the man, the crowd succeeded in stopping him and asked him how he managed to have access to the meat and he couldn’t give any reasonable answer to the questions. Few minutes after he was caught, his clothes were collected from him and the crowd saw some african charms which he tied onto his arm and leg. The charms were forcefully removed from his body to stop him from disappearing. He confessed that he has been doing this for quite some time and during all his operations, he uses the charms to transform himself into an invisible being and that’s how he makes his own money and business by roasting the stolen meat for sale which is popular called “Suya meat” in Nigeria.” Source: http://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/2016/11/14/where-this-suya-seller-gets-his-meat-from-will-shock-you-photo/ |

The group told the leaders of the Niger Delta region, under the Chief Edwin Clark-led Pan Niger Delta Forum, that they could not help but bring down some oil facilities in the region because the Federal Government had allegedly refused to honour the ceasefire terms they both entered. A statement issued by the group’s spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo, told Clark and other leaders to blame both the Federal Government and the Nigerian military for the fresh attacks. They added that the government was using military force to undermine the peace process by ‘unnecessarily’ harassing communities and arresting innocent people in the region. The statement noted that, “We see this as a deliberate move by the military establishment to undermine any effort of dialogue and negotiations with the people of the Niger Delta.” NDA added that the struggle in the region did not just start for the sake of bearing arms against the Nigerian government, it stressed that over six decades of economic and constitutional colonialism against the region led to the struggle. “We ask for understanding on the side of the PANDEF and the general public. The High command of the NDA is only reacting to government’s deliberate attempts to undermine the dialogue process and negotiations”, it added. https://nigeriabreakingnews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/trump-644x437.jpg – Donald Trump says he will deport or jail up to three million illegal immigrants – Trump says he will build a wall that Mexico would pay for US president-elect Donald Trump has said he will deport or jail up to three million illegal immigrants. Trump made this disclosure in his first extensive interview on CBS’ 60 Minutes programme after his shocking victory in the US presidential election. According to him, those targeted would be migrants with criminal records, such as gang members and drug dealers. Trump noted that to hit such a high mark, it would involve either casting a very wide net that covers even the smallest infractions or also deporting legal alien residents of the US with criminal convictions. Donald Trump Trump told CBS: “What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate. “To pull this off, an expanded deportation force would almost certainly be necessary.” The President-elect didn’t specify what he would do with the millions of other undocumented migrants with some groups estimating there could be around 10 million people in the USA without proper papers. He continued: “After the border is secure and after everything gets normalised, we’re going to make a determination on the people that they’re talking about who are terrific people, they’re terrific people but we are going to make a determination [on] that.” He also confirmed that another election promise, to build a wall with Mexico, still stood but could include fencing. Asked about his plans for the Mexican border, he said “a wall is more appropriate” in some parts but “there could be so Source: http://nigeriabreakingnews.com.ng/trump-set-to-immediately-deport-three-million-illegal-immigrants/ |
https://nigeriabreakingnews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Yakubu-Dogara.jpg The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, has revealed that the Federal Government is set to pay debts owed the 36 states. He said the government will pay them N720bn, with each state collecting N20bn. According to him, the said money would be used for the provision of infrastructure by the states. Speaker’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Iliya Habila, in a statement on Sunday quoted Dogara as making the disclosure during a visit to the Igwe of Ogwuekpele, His Royal Highness, Valentine Onyema-Ogidiga. Dogara visited the monarch in his Ogwuekpele palace in Anambra State. It reads in part, “Regards to debts being owed to states, I can announce that very very soon, a chunk of money will be given to states. “It is being processed and I know that no state will get less than N20bn from the money that is coming. “That will be something substantial in the hands of the governors. Those that are spirited, I believe they will be able to translate that money into development so that they can support the diversification (agenda) of the Federal Government.” The statement explained that Dogara was responding to complaints made by the monarch that social infrastructure in the state was decaying and needed urgent funds for resuscitation. It added, “Without capital, you cannot invest; so these are the two things that this government is devoted to. By doing so, state governments can have enough capital; they will have the needed infrastructure for the establishment of functional industries for the evacuation of either solid minerals or agricultural products. And we know that agriculture has the potential of providing employment for the majority of our people. “And I can assure you that when we talk about diversification, it is not just on paper. Recently, there are efforts by the government to source money so that it can begin in earnest the putting up of infrastructure; functional road networks, intermodal and multimodal connectivity of our transportation system and building airports, railways and integrating them with land transportation. “These are the things that are on the agenda and then giving citizens access to cheap capital that they can use to better their lives and start business and provide employment that will earn us foreign exchange.” Speaking earlier, the Igwe appealed to the Federal Government to support Anambra State in the building of infrastructure. He said infrastructure would help farmers to move farm produce easily from the villages to urban markets in cities like Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi and beyond the state. https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gunmen1.jpg Hundreds of residents of Anglican Road, Ilupewo community, Ado- Odo-Otta Local Government Area, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun states, have deserted their homes after receiving a letter from suspected armed robbers. It was learnt that the residents woke up to discover several of such letters pasted to their doorposts. The letter insinuated that the robbers were coming for the operation because of Christmas and New Year festivities. The most shocking aspect of the letter was the phone numbers that accompanied it. The phone numbers – 0702288949, 080449930 – are, however, incomplete. They stressed that they didn’t want excuses from residents over non-availability of money at home. They said the letter was to inform them about their coming and ensure they keep money at home always. The letter was written in Yoruba language and typed in capital letters. They introduced themselves as “Strong men of the road that own the night.” A landlord in the area, who identified himself as Mr. Femi Martins, said: “We are used to pilfering in our community, but we woke up on Tuesday morning to see letters pasted on our doors. About 60 houses on Anglican Road had the letters pasted on their doorposts. We immediately called a meeting. We also reported the matter at the Sango Police Station. We want 24 hours police patrol in our community. We believe that these hoodlums live among us and they can strike anytime.” Before the letters, police had been patrolling some areas in the community, but didn’t stop a series of robberies taking place. It was also learnt that residents, who usually switched off their generators around 11p.m. are now being forced to switch off by 9:30p.m., while business owners now close shop by 6p.m. When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Iliyasu, assured the residents that security had been beefed up in the community. https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Chief-Justice-768x525.jpg Justice Mahmud Mohammed, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) on Monday said the judiciary remained resolute and committed to upholding its independence. He said all courts in the country were empowered to adjudicate with utmost fairness and justice as prescribed in the Constitution and the law.He said the decision of the National Judicial Council, last week, to suspend seven judges accused of corruption, showed the desire of the judiciary to preserve its independence. Mr. Mohammed said this on Monday during the swearing-in of Amina Augie and Ejembi Eko as justices of the Supreme Court in Abuja. The NJC announced the suspension of the judges on Friday after initially declining to do so, arguing that there were no evidence of wrongdoing against the judges. The judges had earlier been arrested by the State Security Service for allegedly receiving bribes. “Certainly, the decision of the National Judicial Council at its last meeting reflects our desire to preserve this independence. “Hence, we proclaimed to the world that any judicial officer that is standing trial will cease to perform judicial functions. “The Council took this stand following communications it received from the Attorney General of the Federation that he was embarking on the prosecution of the affected judicial officers for the offences disclosed against them,” he said. However, he said: “We must not forget that we operate a constitutional democracy, which clearly prescribes the powers accorded to each organ of the state. “I therefore wish to state without fear of contradiction that the third arm of government will remain resolute in its commitment and resolve to uphold its independence,” Mr. Mohammed said. Mr. Mohammed urged the new justices to continue to be diligent in the discharge of their duties. “You must remain blind to personality and status, and remain the hope of all men, whether common or uncommon. “Hence, the integrity and impartiality of our courts must not be in question or compromised. “I am confident that with the institutions and initiatives that we have put in place, the Nigerian Judiciary will evolve to meet the high standards demanded by our citizens,” the CJN said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr. Eko was a Justice of the Court of Appeal, before his elevation to the Supreme Court. He also served in Benue State High Court between 1989 and 2007. Mr. Eko, a Benue native, obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Law/Jurisprudence from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, in 1976. Mrs. Augie was a justice of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division. League of Arab States: “The General-Secretariat of the League of Arab States shares with the people and government of the United States of America the feelings of revulsion, horror and shock over the terrorist attacks that ripped through the World Trade Centre and Pentagon, inflicting heavy damage and killing and wounding thousands of many nationalities. These terrorist crimes have been viewed by the League as inadmissible and deserving all condemnation. Divergence of views between the Arabs and the United States over the latter’s foreign policy on the Middle East crisis does in no way adversely affect the common Arab attitude of compassion with the people and government of the United States at such moments of facing the menace and ruthlessness of international terrorism. In more than one statement released since the horrendous attacks, the League has also expressed deep sympathy with the families of the victims. In remarks to newsmen immediately following the tragic events, Arab League Secretary-General Amre Moussa described the feelings of the Arab world as demonstrably sympathetic with the American people, particularly with families and individuals who lost their loved ones. “It is indeed tormenting that any country or people or city anywhere in the world be the scene of such disastrous attacks,” he added. While convinced that it is both inconceivable and lamentable that such a large-scale, organised terrorist campaign take place anywhere, anytime, the League believes that the dreadful attacks against WTC and the Pentagon unveil, time and again, that the cancer of terrorism can be extensively damaging if left unchecked. It follows that there is a pressing and urgent need to combat world terrorism. In this context, an earlier call by [Egyptian] President Hosni Mubarak for convening an international conference to draw up universal accord on ways and means to eradicate this phenomenon and demonstrate international solidarity is worthy of active consideration. The Arabs have walked a large distance in the fight against cross-border terrorism by concluding in April 1998 the Arab Agreement on Combating Terrorism.” September 17, 2001. https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/buhari.jpg President Muhammadu Buhari after seeing the enormity of the challenges facing the country when he assumed office in May 2015 said he felt like “absconding”, The Cable reports. The president said he was utterly bewildered to notice that despite the rising cost of crude oil from which Nigeria made a fortune, nothing was left for him to start off his administration. Speaking on Thursday, November 3, during a parley with participants of the Senior Executive Course 38 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS) at the state house in Abuja, President Buhari blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Nigeria’s economic woes. President Buhari said: “For 16 years and eight consecutive governments of the other party… there was unprecedented revenue realised, the oil projection which can be verified was 2.1 million barrels per day. From 1999-2015 the average cost of each Nigerian barrel of oil was $100 per barrel. “When we came it fell to less than $30 per barrel and is now between 40 and 50. Actually I felt like absconding because 27 out of 36 states in Nigeria cannot pay salaries and and we know they have no other source than to depend on salaries.” President Buhari defeated former President, Goodluck Jonathan by 15.4m votes to 12.9m votes in Nigeria’s national election adjudged globally to be free and fair. He became the first opposition figure to win a presidential election in Nigeria since independence in 1960. A former military ruler, President Buhari said he is a convert to democracy and would do everything within his power to unite the country.
