Promise of a new lease of life for Nigeria's epileptic power sector was kindled with the launch of a new 13 point plan for repositioning the sector by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr. Raji Fashola. The plan was launched last week at a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which had in attendance the core stakeholders in the sector such as power Generating Companies and Distributing Companies (DISCOs and GENCOs) as well as transmission companies among others. The key provisions of the plan includes a scheduled continuous engagement of the operators of the sector with the general public, around mutual core concerns such as electricity tariffs, revenue collection, payments and debts, as well as generating capacity, which undoubtedly remains central to the nation's power sector challenge. Yet other areas covered by the plan include the complement of ancillary services, and dispatch order, procedure and discipline, gas requirements and supply, load off take and imbalances, location of excess and overload safety, quality service, as well as new captive and embedded generation and franchising. Most significantly the plan institutes a new monthly sectorial meeting of all operators where they will be availed feedback from consumers and compare notes. Ostensibly the plan's main purpose is to establish a seamless interface between the service providers and consumers of power in the country. For this initiative we congratulate the minister, and share the hopes of millions of Nigerians that this time around the country will get its act together, as far as the sector is concerned. At least the minister's eventful past record in public office as the two term action governor of strategic Lagos State justifies high expectations by Nigerians that he can deliver. Yet we also are sounding a note of caution that the central problem of the power sector is not the lack of good plans for moving the sector forward, but implementing such plans successfully. Incidentally he is inheriting an elaborately fashioned Power Sector Road Map which the immediate past administration had developed and used to execute the landmark reforms including its privatization. It is also instructive that he also will find waiting for him the burden of resolving the unintended fallouts from the privatization exercise which introduced private sector operators into the sector with knotty consequences. Hence the Minister will need to address himself to the task of ensuring that the plan not only reconciles with whatever legacies derive from the previous administration, but is implemented as much as is possible. It is in this context that we expect it to feature realizable timelines and other targets with respect to delivery of steady and affordable power to all Nigerians. Beyond the dispensation of freedom from colonial rule of the country in 1960, the provision of steady electric power for the country remains the next most critical factor for moving the country to the next level. It is therefore noteworthy that the present administration correctly realized the premium Nigerians place on the availability of stable power supply all over the country, and enjoyed public approval when it assigned the leadership of its reform programme for the sector to Mr. Fashola. His approach to the job at hand will therefore remain most significant in appraising the performance of the present administration by Nigerians. This is why he cannot afford to fail in leading the country out of the present unacceptable and shameful state of epileptic power supply. Given the history of power sector management in the country, the present initiative by Fashola easily constitutes a make or break point that cannot fail. We therefore wish him good speed and resounding success in this national assignment. SOURCE: http://nigeriabreakingnews.com.ng/fasholas-reveals-how-he-would-solve-power-problem-in-nigeria/ |

Owing to non implementation of a roadmap drawn in 2012 to forestall future occurrence of Lassa Fever in Nigeria, The Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole Thursday blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for current outbreak of the haemorrhagic Fever disease in Nigeria. He said that if the previous governemnt had implemented the said roadmap the current outbreak would not have occured. Prof Adewole who made this allegation while briefing the Senate Committee on Health pegged the number of cases in the country at 129. The minister also disclosed that the ministry was going to begin testing on a potential vaccine that would be used to prevent the virus. According to the health minister: “In 2012 we recorded 1723 cases, after that, because of the severity, the post lassa fever outbreak workshop took place and an action plan to ensure this will never happen again was put in place. “But this action plan was never implemented because it was never funded. We will dust the old plan, modernize it and look at if from the political perspective: what can we do to provide leadership, to provide support.” On the vaccine being developed to tackle the disease, the minister said government has been “notified of a candidate vaccine which we will put through chemical trial to find out if it would work. “We call it a candidate vaccine and we would want to run it through trials and that takes some time. Hopefully we will do that this year, once we consider it to be effective and safe then we put it to use. “If it works then that means that we would be able to immunize people in the affected areas but for now we will continue with our surveillance,” he said. He revealed that the vaccine was co-developed by some Nigerians while saying that the current outbreak is a national embarrassment because although there were about 1723 cases in 2012, the percentage death rate of the current outbreak was higher. He added that the virus had been a yearly occurrence with 400 cases recorded in 2014 although not as publicized as the current outbreak. “We can assure you that we are not going to sleep, we will remain at work, we are actively moving across the country,” he assured the committee. On the recent death of a victim at the National Hospital in Abuja, he said that the ministry was investigating the hospital where the victim was first treated for one week. He said that the Abuja victim actually came from Plateau state because he was ill and landed in a private hospital where he was kept for one week before he was referred. He said that the dead victim was only referred to the National Hospital when he was already unconscious and therefore died 24 hours later. “It is unfortunate because if we had picked this man earlier on, we would have been able to put him on medication and he could have been alive today. “The situation which happened in that private hospital I have asked our people to investigate. We will sanction the doctor or the proprietor if we find any act on negligence on his or her part,” he said. In his remark, the Chairman of the Committee said that the Senate will be willing to approve money for the health of Nigerians not just for lassa but for other ailments. An Islamic State militant executed his mother in public in the Syrian city of Raqqa because she had encouraged him to leave the group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Friday. The woman in her 40s had warned her son that a U.S.-backed alliance would wipe out Islamic State and had encouraged him to leave the city with her. She was detained after he informed the group of her comments, according to the British-based Observatory, which monitors the war through a network of sources on the ground. Citing local sources, the Observatory said the 20-year-old man executed his mother on Wednesday near the post office building where she worked in front of hundreds of people in Raqqa, a main base of operations for the group in Syria. The Islamic State group, which controls wide areas of Syria and Iraq, has executed hundreds of people it has accused of working with its enemies or breaching of its ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam. The Observatory reported on Dec. 29 that Islamic State had executed more than 2,000 Syrian civilians in the 18 months since it declared its “caliphate” over the territory it controls in Syria and Iraq. They included people killed on the grounds of homosexuality, practicing magic and apostasy. It was not possible to independently verify the latest report. Following the completion of formalities for the the burial of the immediate past Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuwade, a fierce succession battle has begun among the four ruling houses in Ile-Ife. These include, Lafogido, Giesi, Ogboru, and Oshikola. However, it is most likely that the next Ooni of Ife will emerge from the Giesi ruling house which last produced an occupant to the position – Ooni Derin Ologbenla – between 1880 and 1894. As such several princes in the Giesi ruling house believing it is their right have begun a flurry of activities they expect would culminate in one of them succeeding Oba Sijuwade. According to a Premium Times source, during a meeting conveyed by 91-year-old Pa Aderibigbe, the elders of the Giesi ruling house “announced and affirmed that the time is now for the process of filling the gap created in the Kingship of Ile-Ife to commence”. Prescribed forms have been given to interested princes of Giesi ruling house which they are to return to the family within the next couple of days after which they will be screened. However, the emergence of the Ooni will depend on how quickly the oracle selects the appropriate occupier to the throne of Ife after which the name will be forwarded to the Local Government. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that his view, as expressed in his three-volume autobiography, My Watch, that Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, is a better wine specialist than political critics, has not changed. Obasanjo in his book wrote: “For Wole, no one can be good, nor can anything be spot-on politically except that which emanates from him or is ordained by him. His friends and loved ones will always be right and correct, no matter what they do or fail to do. He is surely a better wine connoisseur and a more successful aparo (guinea fowl) hunter than a political critic.” Soyinka had, in December 2014, in a piece titled, ‘Watch and Pray, Watch and Prey’, vehemently protested such a description (of him), calling Obasanjo "an expert liar, who lies to boost his ego.’’ Obasanjo in an interview with Channels TV however, held on to his words saying what he wrote about the Nobel Laureate was purely his view, adding that Soyinka did not have to agree with him.
