His Royal Majesty Oba Liazim Olumuyiwa Ogunbekun, the Onilekki of Lekki Town, in Ibeju Lekki local government area of Lagos state, has commended C&I Leasing Plc (C&I Leasing) for its role in creating jobs and empowering the youths of his community.



C&I Leasing is a subcontractor for an ongoing project at the Dangote refinery located in Lekki Town, which is nestled along the Lekki Free Trade Zone.



Speaking during a courtesy visit by C&I Leasing recently, Oba Ogunbekun acknowledged that out of 13 workers on site, the 11 riggers are all indigenes of Lekki Town while the remaining two are staff of the company.



He said the community would continuously extend needed support to C& Leasing as the company had proved it was socially responsible since the project commenced.



“We have been promised by so many companies in the past who came to carry out operations in this community, but none of their promises were ever fulfilled,” he said.



“But C&I Leasing is a responsible organization. You have shown responsibility and integrity by empowering our youths with jobs and transferring useful skills to them.



“Because you have considered the development in our community as important, I am pleased to welcome you today and promise to render the needed support during the course of this contract and possibly future ones.”



In his response, Mr. Andrew Otike-Odibi, managing director and chief executive officer (MD/CEO) of C&I Leasing, who was represented by Captain Anthony Amadi, Project Manager, thanked Oba Ogunbekun for the warm welcome extended to the company.



He said C&I Leasing had over time engaged in sustainable community development projects in the locations where it does business and is ready to take on an additional project that would directly benefit other social categories including women and children of Lekki Town.



“CSR is the heart & soul of our operations, as we are driven by public value & a desire to do good things in the communities where we do business,” he said.



“Apart from empowering these young men with relevant job skills they can use for a long time, we plan to take on a community project that would have a far-reaching effect and benefit other groups including older ones, women and children.”



The C&I Leasing project at the Dangote refinery involves the transportation of pipes (24 and 48 inches) making up the refinery’s discharge lines from the RORO jetty to offshore locations where a Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) point will be installed for the loading of finished products from the refinery.



A total of four vessels are working on the contract including two tugboats, the Seaway 18 and Miclyn Venture and two barges, the Seaway 22 and Miclyn 301.

The convener of The Platform, Nigeria, Pastor Poju Oyemade has said that Nigeria’s problems are rooted in societal indifference and personal callousness caused by the imperfections of men, and in solving this problem, there is a need for a change in government policies, implementations and individuals’ approach to the national issues and concerns.

He said this during his opening speech at The Platform 2019, themed ‘Re-designing the Nigerian economy with new ideas.’ held on Independence Day at the Covenant Place.

Soludo urged the citizens not to be discouraged, saying, “Of course Nigeria has a long list of problems, but adversity comes with opportunities. With a will to overcome, the problems should not stop us. Nor should a few thousands of miscreants – kidnappers, terrorists, internet scammers, bandits, drug barons, robbers, and treasury looters – define us. As we build the foundation for the next Nigeria, we must seize the narrative and sing a new song to rebrand Nigeria. As we bemoan the rising poverty and unemployment, we still remind ourselves that ours is still the largest economy in Africa and Nigeria as home to the most populous black nation on earth.

Also speaking at the event is the CEO Financial Derivatives Limited, Bismarck Rewane, who said “What our economy needs is a mental discipline to learn from the mistakes of the past. Our vulnerability has increased because we have not learned from the mistakes of our past and that of other countries.”

He noted that things outside the country’s control are more than things within its control. “When the institutions of conflict resolution are broken, the alternative to what you have is anarchy. The social contract between the rulers and the ruled is very important as it’s so cheap to just talk than to act.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Lagos State during an interactive session at the event revealed that he is aware of the need to fix basic infrastructures and tackle the challenges in the health and education sectors, stating that he is determined to improve on the situation to cater for the growing populace.

The event, which took place at the Harbour Point in Victoria Island, Lagos, had the theme: ‘’Partnerships, Products and the Customer.“

It featured well-delivered presentations and a hearty panel discussion with thought leaders who spoke on the need for forward-thinking organizations to leverage on market data products and available partnership opportunities​ to launch customer-centric offerings.

In his welcome address, Oscar Onyema, Chief Executive Officer of the NSE, said despite the growth potential in the usage of financial market data and analytics the world over, there remains a low inclination towards investment in Nigeria.

Citing a major reason for the “low retail investment appetite,” in the country, he said there is a lack of adequate knowledge of products and the benefits for retail investors, which gives rise to the need for “creating product offerings that promote diversity in investment, manage risk and make the information readily available to consumers.”

“Exchanges and Data Vendors are already responding to this increasing demand using new tools for market data products,” he said.

Speaking during the panel session, David Ogunsola, Head, Information Technology at C&I Leasing, said the ability to make effective data-driven decisions is crucial for business operations within an organization, owing to the rapidly shifting market landscape in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to him, it is important for companies to key into accurate data and qualitative assessments gleaned from the industry they operate in and identify gaping holes in customer satisfaction that outsiders may prey on.

“Rigorous analysis should be used to drive decision making and adapted in a timely manner, and in this regard, third-party market research can protect you in more ways than one,” he said.

“There is a need to ask important questions and the questions need answers.

'Questions about your customer, questions about the advert, questions about consumer interest, pricing, products, and services- all these questions can only be answered by market data.”

Ogunsola further reiterated that C&I Leasing had keyed into the Investor Relations (IR) Data Pack launched by the NSE recently, which is an integration of historical market data, analytics and “real-time” feeds that would provide robust market information fundamental to instilling confidence in the minds of investors.

“Data is important to C&I Leasing Plc, in terms of looking at probability, forecasting, researching and transcending what we do currently into what the future business holds,” he said.

“The world of big data is challenging but insightful and we are using this insight to propagate our business and become more profitable for existing and potential investors.”

C&I Leasing, a listed support and logistics company, has announced its highest bottom line figure in 5 years driven by stronger earnings in the first quarter of 2019.

Profit after tax increased by 6.82 percent in the first three months to March 2019 to print N398.46 million compared to N373 million recorded in the same period a year ago. Gross earnings surged 21 percent to N7.81 billion in the quarter, its highest gross earnings in 5 years.

The support and logistics company has consistently grown revenue year-on-year in the first quarters of the last three years since profit dipped 56 percent from N219.7 million posted in 2015.

C & I Leasing provides transportation logistics solutions in the form of car and marine rental, fleet management as well as human resource solutions. Its support services are provided along three business lines; fleet management, personnel outsourcing and marine
services.

In Q1 2019, net lease rental income rose some 26 percent to N2.96 billion owing to a 26 percent increase in lease rental income, from N4.37 billion in Q1 2018 to N5.51 billion, although lease expense rose by the same magnitude to N2.55 billion in the review period. Outsourcing income improved by 25.75 percent from N 1.63 billion in Q1 2018 to N2.1 billion Q1 2019. Outsourcing expense increased by 27 percent to N1.85 billion with Net outsourcing income amounting to N202.83 million, 15 percent over Q1 2018 figures.

Similarly C&I leasing was able to grow revenue from Tracking segment, with a 59 percent increase in net tracking income which hit N33.22 million in Q1 2019 from N20.89 million in the equivalent quarter of 2018.

The increase was fuelled by a 35 percent rise in income from Tracking while corresponding expenses increased by 7 percent in the period.
C&I’s interest income ballooned by 1000 percent as its bank deposits earned an interest of N12 million in Q1 2019, as against N53,000 in Q1 2018. Other operating income declined by 81.46 percent and income from joint venture appreciated by 44.67 percent.

The support & logistics company faced higher finance cost in the quarter which rose by 16 percent in the quarter but had 70 percent less impairment charges. personal, depreciation and other expenses grew in the period. As a result, profit before tax rose 7.2 percent to N435 million in the first quarter of 2019, a 7 percent increase from N406 million in the same quarter of the previous year. Income tax rose 11.68 percent to pare profit to N398.46 million, the most realised by C&I leasing in the last 5 years.

Consequently, earnings per share increased to 97 kobo in Q1 2019 from 23 kobo in Q1 2018. Shares of C&I leasing closed at N7.20 per share on Friday, the same level it has remained at since the April 18 when it dropped from N7.99 per share. The company’s share has been affected by a share reconstruction exercise which was completed earlier in the year. The exercise was aimed at consolidating four ordinary shares of 50 kobo each into one ordinary share of 50 kobo each to give C&I more room to raise equity in the future.

However, the exercise affected the illiquidity of C&I leasing stock.
