lajid: Please what advise can you give to best utilize the grade I have. I got the first class in Accounting by the way, dunno but I feel a little pressured Don't feel pressured. Your first class will get you invites for several job tests. If you can pass the tests and interview, you should not have issue getting good jobs. At least in Big 4 who recruit annually and on merit. Read my website jarushub.com for resources on labour market. I'm a first class grad myself and alhamdulillah, it helped me. |

They played better than Nigeria - more compact. They probably need two solid game changers and leaders which was the missing link.
They didn't deserve to lose but they were scoring themselves. |

She now believes in Jesus Afam4eva- He has become very bigoted. Behaves like the typical Igbo man with a HUGE ego Onila- She doesn't post much these days but occasionally pops in Mamagee- This one lives in a planet of her own. She is like the younger version of tpia Naptu2- Bros is ever gallant. Making sense since 1907.
I guess I, Naptu2, Kobojunkie and Mamagee are the only ones from the old set still very active. Wow |

About 8 years ago, one foreign oil servicing firm firm offered me what was below what I was earning then. Told them I can't take that because what I was earning was higher than that.
They said, "ehnnn, this is a small growing firm, there is an opportunity for growth for you, it is not just about money blabla "
Told them, it is like buyout clause in football contract , there is a minimum amount that can make a footballer exit a club (I gave Messi as example). They were shocked and said why did I put my CV on that website when I wasn't desperate to leave my job. (I did not apply for the job, they saw the CV on oilandgasjobsearch.com a foreign website).
I finally told them I can recommend my friend. Told them I will forward his CV to their email. They angrily didn't respond.
Thank God I did not make that move, even if they offered slightly higher than what I earned then. Could have altered the course of my career. |

ElectronicMoney: You're comfortable, you're not wealthy, if you like be receiving a monthly salary of N10 million!
So long as another person signs your paycheck and you need to get permission before you leave the office for an extended period, you're not wealthy! Okay, I just checked the threshold for being rich in a credible medium (Forbes). I am not rich. But it's mainly due to low value of Naira. However, I have senior friends on 9-5 that are worth over N500m and they are salaried people ( of course they have invested over years). And they are in their 40s and 50s with about 20 years experience.

Yankee101: Oga, there's a level you reach it's no more 9 to 5. I've lived both the corporate life and as a business owner.
I fly for meetings and weekend retreats on the job. Not your regular 9 to 5. At that level you work on deliverables not hours. Once you meet them you can actually take everyone out to party, on the job, while getting paid
9 to 5 is an American invention, and you should study its meaning. Not all office jobs are 9 to 5.
In the US you go to work by 9am, mostly due to daylight savings cos it's still dark by 7am here sometimes, and you do 8 hours per day. A typical full time worker does a 40 hr week (mon to fri) and are paid or calculated weekly. That's where we get 9 to 5 mantra from.
Those corporate wall street jobs you talked about are not 9 to 5. They do 80 hr weeks at entry level, take work home etc. At the mgt level you come to work and leave according to your planned schedule. You work with regulators, shareholders, suppliers, franchises etc. At that level it's no longer 9 to 5.
You can NEVER be wealthy with 9 to 5. So if my PA travels around with me to meetings, meeting regulators, shareholders etc (and still earning her N250k), she is no longer a 9-5 worker? |
Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Can A 9am To 5pm Job Make Someone Become Wealthy In Nigeria Without Runs? by Jarus(m): 10:00pm On Jun 11, 2021 |
Yankee101: At that level you don't work '9 to 5' anymore.
You call your hours, work remotely, have working dinners, lunch and travels
Relax my guy and look up the meaning of 9 to 5. So you think 9-5 simply means getting to your desk at 9am and leaving 5pm |
Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Can A 9am To 5pm Job Make Someone Become Wealthy In Nigeria Without Runs? by Jarus(m): 9:58pm On Jun 11, 2021 |
AkalaJ: Dr. Ola is talking about how most people become millionaire 'rich'. I'm talking wealthy people in the mold of Bill Gates, Jeff bezos, Jack ma, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren buffet, etc. None of them became wealthy by working a 9 to 5, or via climbing the corporate ladder. Their kind of wealth cannot be achieved by being an employee. That's the kind of wealth I am talking about (the kind that gets you on the Forbes list), and it certainly isn't for the vast majority. I also think that most people don't even want that kind of wealth anyway, because they lack that level of ambition and are contented with just getting by and meeting their basic needs. The post says Nigeria. If we need to be in the category of Gates, Mark, Jeff etc before being wealthy, then nobody is wealthy in Nigeria, including entrepreneurs! Don't raise an argument to a bar that is "oversyllabus". |

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: My First Job Experience After School As A Lady. by Jarus(m): 9:53am On Jun 06, 2021 |
My first
I got my first job in one of the Behind investment management companies in Lagos, shortly after graduating from school, even before going for NYSC.
I found many things interesting. Yeah, good food for lunch. The informal gists with fonee speaking colleagues. I tried twisting my tongue too, make dem no think say aboki no dey speak turenchi, but my aboki accent no gree. I don improve sha.
The craziest thing was getting to work – crazy traffic. Having being used to strolling to classes in the university, adjusting to working life wasn’t easy. In the university, I used to go back to bed after my 5.45am Muslim prayers, and sleep till like 7.30am before preparing for classes. I can prepare for and get to class within 30 minutes after all. And I can choose not to attend classes, anyway.
But working in Lagos – my first post-school – was a different ball game. Not funny at all.
I stayed at a very far distance. I had to leave home by 5am every morning, sometimes having to do my Muslim prayer on the road. Of course I was hopping public buses, most times. I still struggled to get to work by 8am. Almost 3 hours on the road, every morning.
Work hours was officially 8-5pm, but with a caveat that “you may be required to work longer hours”. Well, that should actually be the rule, not the caveat. It was long hours everyday. 5pm? The work was just starting. 8pm? Okay, you may be free to go home then. And I spent between 1 to 2 hours on the road in the evenings too. Most times I got home after 10pm, sometimes after 11pm.
It didn’t matter whether there was oro (late night fetish activities in some Lagos communities with prior announcement on restriction of movement after a certain time in the night) in the suburb of Lagos I was staying. Wetin you go tell Oga? “There will be oro in my area today so I have to leave by 7pm to get home before 10? “
Well, guess where I landed on my fifth day at work?
Hospital.
I just sent an sms to my direct supervisor that I wouldn’t be able to come to work that Friday – my first Friday. I spent the Friday at the hospital. Too much stress. |
Career › Re: How Do I Become A Political Analyst? by Jarus(m): 6:11pm On May 19, 2021 |
Akintundexxy: I've always had this strong passion becoming a political analyst, both for Nigeria and world politics. It's what I love to do. I'm 23, an undergraduate and I also write;don't know if the aforementioned is necessary but someone might want to refer. 1. Write articles in newspapers and on online sites like SR, PT, The Cable etc. I started writing in newspapers since my 200L in school and today I have over 100 articles in newspapers, half of which are on politics 2. Read wide - national and global news, as well as books of history. You need to be current and be versed in history - enriches your writings 3. Be active on social media. Express your views. Facebook is easier, but Twitter gets you name more easily but tougher to "break into" 4. Avoid rigid views - be balanced, introduce nuances, make sure your views are informed, not pedestrian Nairaland views 5. If you do these, in few years, you make a name and you start getting invite by TV stations to come and speak. I don't like to address myself as a political analyst, but I did the above and I regularly get invited to speak on TV stations (I turn down most). No longer a fan of political commentary. |
