Thirty teams will compete as the 6th Annual President Beach Volleyball Tournament serves off on Friday in Kaduna, with organisers positioning the event as a strategic platform for selecting players ahead of forthcoming international championships. The tournament, which will run until February 17, will feature senior and junior players in both male and female categories drawn from volleyball-playing states across the federation. Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Thursday, the Chairman Nigeria Beach Volleyball Commission, DCP Stephen Hasso (rtd), said the participation of 30 teams underscores growing interest in the sport and the importance of the competition in Nigeria’s beach volleyball calendar. According to him, this year’s edition is distinct because it will feature senior players being considered to represent Nigeria at the Beach Volleyball Championship scheduled for July. “We are expecting 30 teams to compete in this tournament. It is different from previous editions because we are bringing together both senior and junior players, male and female, from different states. The aim is to test their skills and ensure that those who will represent Nigeria are adequately prepared,” Hasso said. He noted that the competition would serve as an evaluation ground for athletes who have shown consistency and potential in recent outings. Also speaking, the Technical Representative, Surveyor Timothy Samuel, said Nigeria’s female beach volleyball team currently ranks first on the continent, while the male team is placed ninth. “Our female team has been stable and they are ranked first in Africa. The male team is ninth, and we are working hard to improve our ranking. This tournament is part of our efforts to identify quality players ahead of the June and July championship,” Samuel stated. He expressed confidence that the Kaduna tournament would further consolidate Nigeria’s dominance in the women’s category while strengthening the male team’s competitiveness on the continental stage. The event is expected to attract sports enthusiasts and stakeholders as the 30 teams battle for honours and national recognition.

*Says 2027 elections about masses vs people in power Ahead of the nationwide congresses of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon, Yekini Nabena, has cautioned Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda-led National Working Committee (NWC) against ceding all the structures to the incumbent governors across the county. The APC chieftain said ceding all the structures from the Wards, local governments and the state to the governors would only breed resentment, deprive real party men and women, and eventually chasing away the few remaining masses in the APC. In a statement he released Wednesday in Abuja, the Bayelsa State APC chieftain warned that, "the 2027 general elections is about masses against the few people in the corridor of power, hence the masses must be carried along." According to him, the ongoing preparations by the current NWC only shows preparation to handover the structures to the Governors in each state based on what is happening and the information gathered from the national secretariat of the APC. He added that it is not too late for the APC leaders to quickly correct the ongoing mistakes and ensure a free and fair congresses nationwide. "We will not be surprised if this prediction comes true because the National Chairman himself and more than half of the entire NWC didn't go through election. They were appointed. So, what do you expect?" Nabena urged the NWC to do the right thing at all levels by selling nomination forms to all those who want to contest to avoid litigation and friction from all the state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He added that the current NWC members needed serious guidance because "many of them did not know what it takes to contest and win election into the position they are currently". He said: "As the party preparing for congresses, the report we are getting is that all the nomination forms are being delivered to the Governors - who will eventually determine who become what by selection. This will not end well. In fact, it will be the beginning of internal crisis which may lead to implosion. "I think this move should be avoided now before it is too late. So, I appeal to our National Working Committee led by Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda to do the right thing now before it is too late. "It is also important that the elders and leaders of our party speak up now by calling the NWC members to order so that they won't proceed in error." While cautioning against internal implosion, Nabena said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should intervene now before the commencement of the exercise nationwide. "So, my appeal to the NWC is that they should not chase away the remaining masses we have in the party. APC used to have about 40 million registered members but now we are struggling to get 10 millions registered members in the ongoing electronic registration. This calls for caution and we must be wise to do the right thing now."

Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt. Rev and Rt. Hon Justin Welby, GCVO, says the future of Nigeria must be decided by Nigerians themselves, without surrendering its sovereignty. This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, dated Monday February 9, 2026. Speaking at a public lecture organised by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as part of activities marking the institution's 45th Convocation Ceremony, Justin Welby explained that the action was not a matter for government alone. "That means those in political, economic, spiritual, social, legal, traditional and other leadership must be willing, among many other demands, to take responsibility for guarding the sovereignty of Nigeria", he said. 'Building Inter-Ethnic and Religious Harmony in Nigeria: Pathways to National University' is title of Welby's lecture. It took place at Abdullahi Mahadi Conference Centre, Ahmadu Bello University, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria. He said inter-ethnic and religious harmony requires that Nigeria's sovereignty is committed to face its own weaknesses, to seek support when it needs it, and to inform where that is necessary. Welby also explained that building inter-ethnic and religious harmony in Nigeria would be vain dreams unless they were built on history, and reflect the political, economic, and physical environments, including internationally. Essentially, the lecture addressed four areas, namely the foundations for interfaith and ethnic harmony, and for building national unity; global environment; values needed; and what is to be done, taking into account the interaction of social, economic, and political conditions in Nigeria and abroad. He stated that Nigerians must also embrace honesty in building inter-ethnic and religious harmony. Justin Welby asserted that in no country could corruption be wiped out, stressing that like weeds in a field it must be fought fiercely if there was to be a good crop. "Honesty values truth about a problem. Honesty means saying what we mean, clearly and plainly. "It means being honest about the faults of our own faith community and nation, recognising its weaknesses and standing with the oppressed. "To act in deceit, without the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is to sow the seeds of terror", he also said. He said transparency was also necessary, saying any action (obviously with the exception of security actions which cannot be revealed in advance) must be explained transparently. Welby described as "always foolish" hiding the truth of the state of the nation, as transparency requires public accountability. The religious leader also pointed out that decisive action was equally key to addressing inter-ethnic and religious crisis. Decisive action, according to him, required "firm leadership and a willingness to act, top down, middle out, bottom up". He also talked about the need for seeking the common good as a value for building inter-ethnic and religious harmony, saying common good was all about treating everyone equally, without fear or favour. Justin Welby empathised on the value of theology, saying there must be real theological dialogue, not 'tea or cake' meetings where nothing of the essence of faith was considered. The task for each religious leader, according to him, was not to make himself famous, but to glorify God. "More than that it is to do everything possible to have a stable, peaceful, and law abiding society, and to work with secular rulers to that end", he said. Welby also stressed that there would be no political peace in Nigeria without religious peace and that no justice in society without religious teaching and justice. He stated that it was religious leaders who could demonstrate national unity, saying he did not mean unanimity as no nation has national total agreement. "Unity is the quality of learning to disagree agreeably, to care for the man who is hungry, for the girl or boy who is uneducated, for the woman who is ignored and whose skills are not valued. They must be cared for not because they are Muslim or Christian, but because they are human", he stressed.

*South West Youth Embrace NYA, dream prosperous Nigeria For Nigeria to move forward, it needs the energy of the youth which is presently in abundance, but yet to be harnessed in the country. Gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Lagos State in the 2023 gubernatorial election, Chief Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour emphasized this, while speaking at the inauguration of 137 local government areas coordinators, South West Zone of the National Youth Alliance (NYA) on Monday February 9 in Ibadan. Speaking as the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Rhodes-Vivour, lamented that those in power in the country, do not take decisions that favour youth. "We need the energy of the youth to move Nigeria forward. Development is supposed to reactivate it'" he said. According to him, when you look at the Senate, the Governors, the Presidents, t's not reflecting youth representation. "That's why they cannot make decisions properly that would affect or benefit you. But they only take us serious when we take ourselves serious. When we start to participate, when we start to organize," he urged. The 2023 Guber candidate lamented that those in power are borrowing money that they won't be the ones to pay. "They are borrowing money anyhow because they are not the ones that will have to pay the tax. When your president is budgeting billions every year for Asteroid cleaning, you will not use Asteroid cleaning when there is no cleaning there," he said. He therefore, charged the youth to participate actively in politics. "So please, anytime I hear you need participation, I always support. Because I ran for Senate in the largest electoral district in Nigeria when I was 35," he said. Earlier in his welcome address, President of NYA, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas said that youth in Nigeria have all it takes to determine who wins any election. He said that NYA as a movement is poised to achieving "Youth O Clock" through active participation in political activities on the country by supporting candidates that have interest of youth at heart. "This inauguration underscores the Alliance’s unwavering commitment to building a disciplined, organized, and people-driven youth movement capable of influencing positive political, social, and economic change," he said. Meanwhile, the youth drawn from across the 137 local government areas of the South West resolved to doing all it takes to make Nigeria work for the good of all as the coordinators were inaugurated. This landmark event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing nationwide consolidation of the NYA’s grassroots structure, aimed at strengthening youth participation, leadership development, and inclusive governance across Nigeria. The newly inaugurated Local Government Coordinators were carefully selected based on credibility, competence, and dedication to the ideals of youth empowerment and national development. Their mandate includes mobilizing young people at the grassroots, promoting civic engagement, advancing women and youth inclusion in governance, and serving as ambassadors of responsible leadership within their respective local governments. The South-West zonal inauguration in Ibadan further reflects the NYA’s strategic focus on regional balance, unity, and coordinated action, as the Alliance continues to expand its footprint across all geopolitical zones of the country.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State and immediate-past Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), Prince Paul Ikonne, has called on Abians to remain vigilant and continuously hold the government of Governor Alex Otti accountable, particularly over what he described as persistent financial inconsistencies and lack of transparency in the administration. Prince Ikonne made this call while speaking on a monitored radio programme on Monday in Abuja, where he expressed deep shock over the inclusion of ₦210 million in the Abia State budget allegedly earmarked for the purchase of a photocopier, an action the state government has since attempted to dismiss as a “typographical error.” While debunking the allegation that the government budgeted N250 million for the purchase of a photocopier at its Lagos Liaison Office, through a statement by the State Ministry of Budget and Planning, Abia state government had described the claim as "misleading and the result of a formatting error in the 2026 budget document." According to Ikonne, however, it is alarming that an administration led by a governor who prides himself as a seasoned banker and former bank chief executive, with a lifetime background in finance, accounting, and figures, would repeatedly commit such grave “errors” in public financial documents. “This is exactly how Abia money is written off. If Abians had not paid attention and raised questions, this whopping sum would have quietly disappeared,” Ikonne stated. He further questioned how a government that constantly parades itself as being run by technocrats could be making such random and costly mistakes, recalling a previous incident where about ₦1.2 billion was reportedly marked as a typographical error for the purchase of Hilux vehicles. Prince Ikonne raised concerns about other budgetary figures that Abians may not have noticed throughout the two and a half years of Governor Otti’s administration, warning that what has come to light may only be a fraction of deeper financial irregularities. "The Otti administration is fast gaining notoriety for financial inconsistencies, padding, and attempts to siphon the common patrimony of Ndi Abia under the guise of errors,” he said. Ikonne wondered how ₦210 million and ₦12 million could be mistaken for each other, further querying what kind of photocopier would even cost ₦12 million. Drawing a practical comparison, he noted that business centres along Pound Road in Aba, where large volumes of documents are handled daily, do not operate photocopiers anywhere near that cost, let alone a government liaison office with minimal paperwork. He accused the government of being insensitive to the plates of Abia’s resources, with huge amounts of money being received from the Federal Government as a result of the policy of Mr President. The APC chieftain also questioned the fate of the already presented and passed budget, asking how such glaring discrepancies would now be reconciled as implementation commences. He further expressed concern over major projects allegedly funded with enormous sums, including claims that about ₦100 billion has been spent on smart schools that are yet to be seen, as well as the controversial ₦7 billion recreational centre, which he described as existing largely on social media.

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and political activist, Comrade Timi Frank, has petitioned United States President Donald Trump, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under existential threat and could descend into chaos if alleged plans to manipulate the 2027 general elections are not halted. In a strongly worded open letter dated February 7, 2026, Frank accused the ruling party and the leadership of the National Assembly of plotting to entrench a one-party authoritarian state, describing the alleged scheme as “political genocide” against Nigerians. He called on Trump and the international community to intervene, warning that failure to act could trigger unrest, violent conflict, and a breakdown of law and order. “Nigeria’s general elections scheduled for February 2027 are under serious threat. If current developments are not addressed, they may result in widespread unrest, possible anarchy, and a breakdown of law and order,” Frank warned. Frank accused the Senate leadership of deliberately undermining electoral reforms designed to curb fraud, alleging that a key provision of the Electoral Act 2022—backed by what he claimed was the will of over 80 per cent of Nigerians—was being systematically removed to facilitate rigging. “The ruling party, working closely with the Nigerian Senate under a highly compromised Senate President, has begun laying the groundwork to manipulate and rig the 2027 general elections,” he alleged. He argued that the same provision was ignored during the 2023 general elections, which he described as “deeply flawed,” and is now being dismantled again to consolidate power. The former APC spokesperson criticised the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, citing turnout figures and observer reports to question the credibility of the process. “The current President was declared winner with only 36.61 per cent of the total votes cast… from an eligible voter population of over 93 million. These figures alone raise serious concerns about the credibility of the process,” he stated. Frank referenced reports by international observers, including the European Union Election Observation Mission, which criticised transparency gaps and operational failures, and the U.S. State Department’s call for improvements by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He urged the United States to consider measures against the Senate President, whom he accused of spearheading efforts to disenfranchise Nigerians. “The current Senate President appears determined to use his position to silence opposition voices and disenfranchise Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections,” he said, adding that the 10th National Assembly was “widely viewed as one of the weakest in Nigeria’s history.” Frank who currently serves as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East and Senior Advisor to the Global Friendship City Association (GFCA), USA, alleged that state institutions - including the military, police, and judiciary - were being pressured to entrench partisan control. “The ruling party is actively engaging in what can only be described as political genocide, using intimidation, coercion, and pressure to control the military, police, judiciary, and other institutions of state,” he claimed. Frank further accused the Federal Government of spending millions of dollars on lobbying firms in Washington to launder its international image rather than address insecurity and governance failures at home. “This administration has spent millions of dollars hiring lobbyists… not to improve governance at home, but to launder its international image and avoid accountability,” he alleged. He cited testimony by former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, who reportedly expressed distrust of the Nigerian government. “This government has not given us any reason to trust them,” Brownback was quoted as saying. Frank urged Trump and U.S. lawmakers to exercise caution in engaging the Nigerian government and avoid legitimising what he described as illegality and oppression. “Any blanket endorsement risks legitimising illegality and oppression in Nigeria,” he warned, adding that U.S. intervention could help preserve stability in West Africa’s largest democracy. He pleaded for international support to ensure credible elections and prevent Nigeria from sliding into authoritarianism. “Continued disregard for these principles may spell disaster for an already fragile nation, under the watch of the international community,” he said.

Prof Ahmed also said Governor Yusuf's participation at the event added immense value and significance to the occasion. The ceremony also witnessed the laying of the foundation stone of the incubation park by the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonja-Iweala. * As Shettima inaugurates Tudun Biri Resettlement The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that the commissioning of the Tudun Biri Resettlement Scheme in Kaduna State reflects the Federal Government’s transition from emergency relief to structured post-conflict recovery. The Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, stated this on Friday at the inauguration of the Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict (RSPIC) in Igabi Local Government Area. Umar, who chairs the Project Implementation Unit, said the intervention demonstrates a deliberate focus on planned resettlement, livelihood restoration and social reintegration of displaced persons. She said the project, coordinated by the Office of the Vice President, followed technical assessments and consultations after the Dec. 3, 2023 drone incident that caused casualties and displacement in Tudun Biri community. According to her, the Kaduna component of RSPIC includes several housing sites, with Tudun Biri delivering 133 housing units, following the conversion of 10 units into an education facility. Umar said the project required extensive inter-agency coordination to address logistical and site-specific challenges, describing it as a governance-driven response to restore stability and reduce vulnerability. She urged beneficiaries to maintain the facilities and promote peaceful coexistence, while commending President Bola Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and the Kaduna State Government for policy support and coordination. Earlier, Vice-President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the resettlement scheme, comprising housing units, educational facilities and supporting infrastructure, describing it as the fulfilment of a commitment made to the affected community. Shettima recalled that President Tinubu had directed the commencement of the resettlement following the 2023 incident, noting that the scheme was executed under RSPIC to provide durable recovery solutions. He said the intervention reflects the Federal Government’s resolve to respond decisively to humanitarian conflicts and internal displacement, adding that similar projects are ongoing in Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger, Katsina and Benue states. The Vice-president commended Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State for what he described as constructive partnership and inclusive governance in the implementation of the project. In his remarks, Sani expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the intervention, saying it reinforced the centrality of citizens’ dignity in governance. Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Aisha Haruna and Mr Solomon John thanked the Federal Government for the resettlement, describing it as a step towards restoring normalcy in the community.

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has called on African leaders to draw strategic lessons from the Abraham Accords, arguing that peace, economic integration and global relevance can be advanced through pragmatic cooperation even when political disputes remain unresolved. Frank, who made the call in a statement while outlining a policy brief titled, “The Abraham Accords and Africa: Strategic Lessons for Peace, Integration, and Global Relevance,” said the Middle East agreements initiated in 2020 marked a departure from traditional conflict resolution models by prioritising practical cooperation over the settlement of all historical grievances. He explained that the Abraham Accords are a set of agreements brokered by the United States in 2020 that established diplomatic normalisation between Israel and several Arab states, which marked a significant shift in Middle Eastern diplomacy. According to him, although the accords are geographically distant from Africa, their underlying principles offer timely guidance for a continent grappling with protracted conflicts in the Sahel, the Great Lakes and the Horn of Africa. “Peace should be treated as an evolving process, not a final settlement,” Frank said. “Waiting for perfect political conditions before engagement often deepens conflict rather than resolves it.” He noted that many African conflicts persist because dialogue is tied to rigid preconditions that are difficult to meet, stressing that early engagement and incremental cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, trade and security can serve as confidence-building measures. Frank, who currently serves as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East as well as Senior Advisor to the Global Friendship City Association (GFCA), USA, said the Abraham Accords demonstrated that diplomatic engagement need not be delayed until all disputes are resolved, adding that cooperation itself can help to stabilise fragile regions. “The experience of the Abraham Accords reinforces a simple but important lesson for Africa: peace does not have to wait for perfect conditions to begin,” he said. On economic integration, the former APC spokesperson, pointed to the rapid expansion of economic ties among the signatory states as one of the most tangible outcomes of the accords. He argued that Africa is well positioned to replicate this logic through accelerated implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). “Regional trade, shared infrastructure projects and joint investments can reduce tensions by creating mutual benefits and lowering the incentives for conflict,” he said, adding that AfCFTA should be treated not only as a commercial framework but also as an instrument of stability. Frank also highlighted the security implications for Africa, noting that instability in the Middle East has historically affected the continent through terrorism, arms trafficking and migration pressures. He said reduced regional tensions weaken extremist networks with transnational reach and called for stronger Africa-led security cooperation. “Africa benefits from a multipolar world with fewer conflict flashpoints,” he said, urging enhanced intelligence sharing, joint operations and early warning mechanisms in line with the African Union Peace and Security Architecture. On diplomacy, Frank said the Abraham Accords reflected a shift towards interest-driven engagement rather than ideological alignment, a model African states should adopt. He called for balanced, non-aligned foreign policies that prioritise technology transfer, food security, water management and renewable energy. “Africa must position itself as a pragmatic global actor, not a passive participant,” he said. While acknowledging the gains of the accords, Frank cautioned that unresolved political grievances remain and warned that economic cooperation should not replace inclusive political dialogue. “Africa must balance pragmatism with its historic commitment to justice, self-determination and international law,” he said. He outlined three core policy directions for African leaders: prioritising early engagement over prolonged stalemates, using economic integration as a peace tool, and pursuing interest-driven diplomacy while upholding fairness and inclusion. Frank recommended dialogue without preconditions, accelerated AfCFTA implementation, strengthened regional security cooperation, balanced foreign partnerships and people-centred peace processes aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063. In conclusion, he stressed that the Abraham Accords offer Africa not a rigid template but a strategic lesson. “With political will, practical cooperation and inclusive dialogue, African leaders can reduce conflict, strengthen unity and position the continent as a confident and credible global actor,” Frank said. He reiterated that peace can begin even in imperfect conditions if leaders choose cooperation over prolonged stalemates.

The illicit substance was concealed in 13 bags within one of four vehicles contained in a single import consignment. A detailed weighing confirmed the breakdown as Ten bags at 25kg each, One at 29kg, and Two at 34.5kg and 34kg respectively, totaling 347.5kg. This marks the fourth significant joint drug interception by the NCS and NDLEA at Apapa Port in under Two (2) months, underscoring Comptroller Oshoba’s firm commitment that no cargo wthether import or export will pass through the port without thorough examination. We remain vigilant and resolute in the discharge of our duty to protect our society and national security.” The operation highlights the exemplary inter-agency collaboration championed by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD. Through intelligence sharing and joint efforts, NCS and NDLEA officers have consistently outmaneuvered smuggling networks in Nigeria’s maritime sector. Comptroller Oshoba noted that the seizure is a direct outcome of this strengthened partnership and emphasized that the upcoming deployment of a high-capacity 200-container-per-hour drive-through scanner will further enhance technology-driven anti-smuggling operations. Both agencies’ Standard Operating Procedures continue to foster zero tolerance, unwavering professionalism and seamless cooperation among officers. In line with established protocols, the seized 347.5kg of Canadian Loud has been formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution of associated suspects. This latest success builds on the recognition accorded to Comptroller Oshoba and NDLEA Apapa Special Area Commander Mohammed Tukur, who were both awarded the WCO Certificate of Merit on Monday, 26 January 2026, in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the International Customs Day celebrations in Nigeria. Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has called on African leaders and the continent to embrace peace models that are realistic, fair, and people centered. Frank, who is a Senior Advisor, Global Friendship City Association (GFCA), in USA, made the call following the adoption of Abraham Accords by the U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration, which chose to push a different approach to a longstanding conflict. In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, Comrade Timi Frank, said the new arrangement focused on practical cooperation encouraging dialogue, trade, security collaboration, and engagement between former adversaries. According to him, Africa understands this reality very well. Our continent has lived through conflicts that lasted decades. We know that waiting for “perfect conditions” before talking often means waiting forever. In many African countries, peace began when former enemies decided to engage, even when wounds were still fresh and trust was limited. "One of the strongest ideas behind the Abraham Accords is that peace can grow from shared interests. When countries trade together, invest together, and solve problems together, the cost of conflict becomes higher than the benefits. Economic cooperation does not solve everything, but it creates space for dialogue and stability. "This lesson is especially important for Africa. Poverty, unemployment, and isolation continue to fuel conflict across the continent. Where people see opportunity, hope grows. Where borders open for trade and ideas, tensions often reduce. That is why regional integration and economic cooperation remain critical for Africa’s future. "At the same time, Africans cannot ignore questions of fairness and justice. Our history of colonialism has made us deeply sensitive to voices that are left out. Any peace effort that ignores legitimate grievances risks being fragile. True peace must eventually listen to everyone involved." The political activist, who is also the ULMWP Ambassador (East Africa and Middle East) said for Africa, the lesson is not to copy the Abraham Accords, but to learn from their spirit. "Still, the Abraham Accords remind us of an important truth: long-standing conflicts are not impossible to change. They show that courage, dialogue, and practical cooperation can break cycles of hostility that once seemed permanent. "Peace does not always begin with perfect solutions. Sometimes, it begins with a decision to talk, to trade, and to coexist. "In a world facing growing division, Africa should embrace peace models that are realistic, fair, and people centered. We have our own stories of resilience and reconciliation. The challenge now is to build on them and show that peace, even when imperfect, is always better than endless conflict."

*Inaugurates state chairmen, unveils website, portal *Political parties in Nigeria have lost political direction - Showumi The attitude of Nigerian politicians using youth in the build up to national elections and later band among them is unacceptable. This was expressed by the President, National Youth Alliance (NYA), Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, in his speech, while inaugurating the chairmen of the NYA from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) , as well as the unveiling of NYA official website and portal, on Monday January 26, 2027 at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja. "We must speak the truth: Many of our politicians have confused and misguided the youth—using them during elections, ignoring them during governance, and abandoning them after victory. Women, despite their strength, resilience, and numbers, remain largely confined to the margins of power. "This is unacceptable. And this is why the National Youth Alliance exists," he said. According to him, the NYA is not a pressure group for noise, not a platform for violence., but a movement for structure, inclusion, and leadership development. "Today, as we inaugurate our State Chairmen across the federation, we are deliberately positioning young men and women who understand their communities, who believe in unity, and who are committed to service—not self. "To the newly inaugurated State Chairmen and FCT leadership, he charged them to be active, not just ceremonial figures. "You are architects of grassroots transformation. You carry the responsibility of organizing, educating, and mobilizing youths and women toward constructive participation in politics, governance, and nation-building," he said. Speaking further, he said that, "Today marks a historic milestone in the journey of the National Youth Alliance (NYA). We are not only inaugurating our 36 State Chairmen and the FCT leadership, we are also unveiling our Official Website and Digital Portal—a symbol of structure, transparency, and a new digital direction for youth engagement in Nigeria. "This gathering is not ceremonial alone. It is symbolic. It is strategic. And above all, it is a statement of intent. "Nigeria’s youths and women are angry. They are aggrieved. Not because they lack ideas or energy—but because for too long, they have been excluded, misled, and underrepresented in the decisions that shape their lives and their future." On the unveiling of NYA official website and portal, he explained that it further reinforces their commitment to transparency, coordination, and digital inclusion. "This platform will connect our structures nationwide, amplify youth voices, provide access to opportunities, and serve as a hub for ideas, policy engagement, and leadership development. "Let me be very clear: The future of Nigeria will not be secured by age alone, nor by recycled leadership. It will be secured when youths and women are properly positioned—not as tools, but as decision-makers. "We are not asking for power because of our age. We are demanding inclusion because of our competence, numbers, and stake in Nigeria’s future. "The NYA will continue to advocate for peaceful engagement, political education, accountability, and responsible leadership. We will partner, we will engage, and where necessary, we will challenge—always in the interest of a better Nigeria," he said. Ambassador Abbas appreciated their partners, elders, and allies who believe in their vision for standing with them. "To Nigerian youths and women watching today: your voice matters, your future matters, and your time is now. "Together, we will build a Nigeria where leadership is earned, governance is inclusive, and hope is restored," he said. In her goodwill message, a former Minister of State, FCT, Hajiya Ramatu T. Aliyu, who served as Mother of the day, said that youth need to rise up to take their rightful place. She said that youth in Nigeria must unite to make the difference and make Nigeria earn its rightful pace as giant of Africa. "A dream that Nigeria moves forward is what we envisage. We can't continue to do same thing again and expect different result. The answer is with you, the unity of Nigeria is non negotiable. "That you are bounded by one unity, you will succeed. I envisage a Tsunami movement," she said. She said that she believes in the movement and will be always available to contribute to its success. She urged youth to remember that leadership, love and order is crucial, tasking them to be law abiding in all their dealings. "Having a figure of 50 million Nigerian youth is no joke. Avoid being used as youth of political violence. If you destroy things through violence, when you take over, what will you oversee," she appealed. While inaugurating the NYA states executive, former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Spokesman, and Chairman of the ocassion, Chief Segun Showunmi, said that political parties in Nigeria have lost direction. He expressed this while inaugurating the state chairmen of the 36 states and FCT "It is possible that if you approach your work as a journey that will surpass the present ideology that we have now, you may be a vehicle that will rescue Nigeria. "You have gathered because of passion, you have gathered because of believe," he said.

*Says partnering with traditional rulers across Nigeria can help mobilize communities, revive local sports *Bags SWAN National Order of Sports Award The Och’Idoma & President, Idoma Area Traditional Council, AgabaIdu, PFD, Elaigwu Odogbo John, has reiterated that sports is more than competition; it is education, character formation, unity, and peace-building as well as a viable platform for crime reduction and social inclusion. He stated this, when the President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, led a National delegation and paid him homage at his royal palace in Otukpo, Benue State at the weekend. "In a nation with a youthful population like Nigeria, sports remains one of the strongest platforms for youth engagement and empowerment, crime reduction and social inclusion, talent discovery and economic opportunity, national pride and global representation," he said. According to him, as traditional rulers, they are custodians of culture, peace, and moral authority. "As sports journalists, you are custodians of narratives, truth, and inspiration. When these two institutions work together, the impact is far-reaching and transformational," he declared. He therefore, challenged journalists to use their pens, cameras, commentaries, and investigative work to the benefit of the society. "You have helped nurture sporting icons, shape public opinion, and preserve the memory of our collective sporting achievements," he acknowledged. The Idoma Kingdom paramount ruler, used the opportunity to commend the sacrifices of past and present SWAN leaders and members who laboured, often without adequate recognition, to ensure that Nigerian sports remains in the national consciousness. As National Patron, he suggested that SWAN should focus on constructive thoughts for the continued growth and relevance of the association. "SWAN should deepen its focus on grassroots and school sports, especially in rural communities. Many talents are lost not for lack of ability, but for lack of exposure. "Establish mentorship platforms where experienced sports journalists train young writers, commentators, photographers, and digital creators, ensuring professionalism and ethical standards. "Partnering with traditional rulers across Nigeria can help mobilize communities, revive local sports festivals, and promote peace through sporting activities. "SWAN can strengthen its role as a credible advocate for better sports policies, infrastructure, athlete welfare, and transparent sports administration. "In this digital age, SWAN should continue to invest in modern storytelling, archiving Nigeria’s sports history, and combating misinformation with facts and integrity. "In times of social tension, sports remains a neutral ground. SWAN can champion sports-for-peace initiatives across regions and cultures," he advised. He assured that as the Och’Idoma and Paramount Ruler of Idoma Kingdom, he reaffirms commitment to supporting initiatives that empower youths through sports, encouraging collaboration between SWAN and traditional institutions, as well as using his office to advocate for unity, discipline, and excellence through sports and media engagement. "I see this patronage not as a title, but as a shared mission to build a healthier, more united, and purpose-driven Nigeria," he added. He thanked the leadership and entire membership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria for finding him worthy of the honour and visit to the Royal Palace. Earlier in his remarks, SWAN President, Benjamin, explained that they were there for three reasons, which are, to thank the Ochidona for greatly contributing to making the SWAN @60 celebration colourful last year in Abuja by being present. He further said that in view of that, the association was there to present him with one of SWAN's highest Honours, the SWAN Nigeria of Sports (SNOS) as well as present him with a letter of nomination as its patron. Among top dignitaries who graced the occasion were First and Second Class Traditional Chiefs of Idoma Area Traditional Council as well as the President and Secretary-General of Ochetoha K’Idoma Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu and Chief Dr Paul Edeh esq. The Chairman of SWAN, Benue State Chapter, Hembadoon Orsar, who represented the Vice President of SWAN, North Central zone, Mr. Olayinka Owolewa led a delegation from Makurdi to Och’Idoma palace in Otukpo.

A group, the Omoluabi Coalition has strongly condemned the continued interventions of Hakeem Baba-Ahmed in Nigeria’s opposition politics, describing his posture as duplicitous, partisan, and calculated to weaken the opposition ahead of 2027. In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Convener, Olumide Obayemi, the Coalition faulted Baba-Ahmed’s repeated public calls urging Atiku Abubakar to step aside from the 2027 contest, insisting that the decision to seek elective office is a personal and constitutional right, guided by prevailing political realities—not the preferences of self-appointed gatekeepers. The Coalition noted with concern that since his much-publicised exit from the administration of Bola Tinubu, Baba-Ahmed has conspicuously avoided any serious critique of a government that has presided over unprecedented economic hardship, social dislocation, and national despair. Instead, his energy has been disproportionately deployed against the opposition—particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—raising legitimate questions about where his true loyalties lie. “It is both ironic and revealing,” the statement said, “that a man who claims non-partisanship has found nothing fundamentally wrong with an administration that has wrecked livelihoods, but finds endless fault with an opposition seeking to rescue the country.” The Coalition further described as intellectually dishonest Baba-Ahmed’s attempt to delegitimise debates around succession, zoning, and leadership aspirations—especially his dismissive tone toward voices from the South-East. It stressed that Nigerians from any region, including supporters of Peter Obi, have an unquestionable right to articulate political demands, canvass positions, and even argue for automatic tickets—so long as such advocacy remains peaceful and within democratic bounds. “No individual—certainly not Hakeem Baba-Ahmed—has the moral or democratic authority to criminalise political demands simply because he disagrees with them,” the Coalition said. “Supporters of Peter Obi are entitled to their views, just as supporters of Atiku Abubakar or any other aspirant are. Democracy does not require silence; it requires engagement.” The group accused Baba-Ahmed of actively stoking internal tensions within the opposition in a bid to fracture unity and hand advantage to the ruling party. “We therefore challenge Hakeem Baba-Ahmed to come clean,” the statement added. “Is he an independent voice, or a fifth columnist working, wittingly or unwittingly, for the re-election of President Tinubu?" The Coalition also found it troubling that while Baba-Ahmed postures as an arbiter of opposition conduct, his family’s public interventions have often been hostile toward Peter Obi, further deepening suspicion about a coordinated effort to sow discord across opposition ranks. “Nigeria has endured enough,” the statement concluded. “Any so-called 'corn' analyst who spends this moment attacking the prospects of opposition success—rather than interrogating the failures of a collapsing administration—stands exposed as an agent of the status quo. Nigerians must see through this charade and reject it.”

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has described the conferment of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on businessman Gilbert Chagoury as a dark moment for Nigeria, warning that the decision sends a dangerous signal that corruption and conflicts of interest are being normalised at the highest levels of power. In a strongly worded statement he released on Tuesday, Frank said the honour - Nigeria’s second-highest national award - undermines public trust and the country’s anti-corruption posture, given widely reported allegations and judicial findings linking Chagoury to money-laundering cases arising from funds looted during the late General Sani Abacha junta. “Today ranks among the saddest days of my life as a Nigerian,” Frank said, recalling reports that a Swiss court convicted Chagoury in 2000 in connection with laundering Abacha loot, after which he allegedly paid a fine of one million Swiss francs and returned about $66 million to the Nigerian government. “To bestow one of our highest national honours on a person publicly tainted by allegations and judicial findings of corruption sends a deeply troubling message about our national values,” he added. Frank also raised concerns about alleged conflicts of interest, citing reports that Chagoury is a business associate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and is linked to the controversial Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project, reportedly awarded without competitive bidding to Hitech Construction Company, a subsidiary of the Chagoury Group. “A sitting President should not be in business dealings - directly or indirectly - with close associates while holding office,” Frank said, arguing that the optics of the award and the project fuel public suspicion of abuse of power. The former APC spokesman further pointed to what he described as troubling institutional contradictions, noting that Nigeria’s current National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, once served as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, when Chagoury was reportedly investigated as one of Abacha’s key cronies. Frank who currently serves as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East as well as Senior Advisor to the Global Friendship City Association (GFCA), USA, claimed that Chagoury left Nigeria at the time, only to return later after settling fines and returning funds. He also referenced reported issues Chagoury allegedly had with United States authorities over money-laundering allegations, though later settled, arguing that such a history should preclude elevation to national honour and international legitimacy. Expanding his critique to the international arena, Frank cautioned the United States - particularly President Donald Trump and American policymakers - against being misled by lobbyists or vested interests. He warned that Washington should not appear to lend moral or political cover to individuals or governments perceived to reward corruption. “A President reputed for standing against corruption and poor governance should be cautious about associating, directly or indirectly, with a government that glorifies individuals with controversial corruption histories,” Frank said. He also alluded to persistent claims that Chagoury exerts outsized influence over major infrastructure and commercial decisions in Nigeria, allegedly to the detriment of American business interests and in favour of French-linked firms. If true, Frank said, such claims raise serious questions about transparency, fair competition and the capture of state policy by private interests. “Nigeria should not become a theatre where corruption is rewarded, conflicts of interest are ignored, and foreign influence is leveraged against national and allied economic interests,” he warned, adding that the controversy has international governance implications. Frank criticised what he described as a growing disconnect between government decisions and public sentiment, arguing that transparency and accountability are increasingly sidelined. He questioned the criteria used to confer the GCON on Chagoury, asking Nigerians to demand clarity on his contributions to national development. “What hospitals, schools or scholarships has he built or funded to merit this honour?” Frank asked. “Beyond his name being linked for years to alleged corruption cases without clear conclusions, Nigerians deserve to know what qualifies him for this award and who among our business leaders has been similarly honoured.” Calling for civic vigilance, Frank urged opposition parties and citizens committed to justice and the rule of law to treat the episode as a wake-up call. “A nation where individuals accused or convicted of corruption are protected, defended or even honoured is a nation drifting dangerously toward institutionalised impunity,” he said. “It is one thing for the rule of law to be weakened; it is far worse for impunity to be openly rewarded.” Frank urged reflection and decisive action, insisting that Nigeria must recommit to accountability and ethical governance. “Nigeria deserves better,” he said.

*Says Alex Otti floating, abandons Peter Obi *Dismisses Senator Abaribe's re-election in Abia A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia state, Prince Paul Ikonne, has said the South-east leaders have resolved to deliver the region to the incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, adding that 90 percent of votes won't be good enough. Ikonne, who is the immidiate-past Executive Secretary and CEO of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) revealed that the entire South-east is almost a one party region for the President. Speaking during an interview on the popular show on TVC "Politics Tonight" Tuesday evening, Ikonne dismissed the influence of Labour Party, revealing that Governor Alex Otti refused to follow Peter Obi to opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) because he knew Obi won't go far. He also said Governor Alex Otti is no longer a factor because the Governor do not have a party to even function. While reacting to the recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed by the South-east leaders in Enugu state, Ikonne said: "I think we have gone beyond seventy percent. Some school of thought believe that with the number of people, the calibre of people we have in APC today in the South-east that 90 percent will not be good result for us considering the moves, the decamping, the harvest of people that we are getting. "Let me give you a clearer picture so you can understand what it means for the entire south. What Governor Hope Uzodinma is doing is not only for the Southeasterners residing in the South-east. No, he has set up a team which I am part of now going around all the states in Nigeria wear the Igbos reside, for us to begin to engage them, sensitize them, for them to understand the need to key into the 2027 re-election bid of Mr President. "So the votes that will come from the South-east will not only be judged by the ones from those who are residing within the South-east but from the ones also who are residing outside the South-east. Outside that, using Abia as a case study, PDP has almost emptied into APC in Abia state. What does that tell you? It tells you that the votes which were lost without having PDP, now that those in PDP are part of APC in other states, we will have them." When asked about the influence and popularity of Governor Alex Otti in Abia state, Ikonne said: "Our governor is minus one. This Governor Alex Otti is minus one in the sense that he doesn't even have a party. As of today, he's a member of the Labor Party but he conducted local government elections with ZLP. "He has abandoned Peter Obi. So what does that tell you? He started with Peter Obi and he's not ending up with Peter Obi. Why is he afraid? Why is his interest hinting towards APC? Because you have seen that people have shifted, Abians have shifted, southeasterners have shifted to support President Tinubu. "Now no Southeasterner will want to stay out or will want this region to stay out of the center. We cannot keep isolating ourselves. No, southeasterners are no longer willing and ready to isolate themselves from governance because we need power and we are traders, we are businessmen and women. "Aligning with the center helps our businesses. We are all over nigeria and we cannot be seen to be against government at the center so that is why the work that governor hope and other leaders are putting in to see that we people understand the need for us to re-elect President Tinubu but not just with 10, 20 percent no. "I did say sometime ago that South-east will eventually become the stronghold of APC and with this endorsement, it is beginning to be obvious that we are getting towards that point." The APC chieftain said Peter Obi no longer commands the political strength to match President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the South-east ahead of the 2027 general election. According to him, the endorsement by serving governors, former governors, ex–Senate Presidents, ministers and other top political figures marks a strategic return of the South-east to the centre of national politics and naturally diminishes Obi’s standing ahead of 2027. “The calibre of leaders backing this endorsement shows a clear consolidation of political structures in favour of President Tinubu and the APC,” Ikonne said. “Politics is about numbers and structure. When leaders who command followership align, the votes follow. “This endorsement is a clear statement that the South-East has properly realigned with the centre to ensure that its votes count,” he said. He further downplayed the political strength of Peter Obi, arguing that his influence has weakened considerably, particularly in the South-east. “If the only governor elected on his platform has effectively abandoned him, what does that tell you?” Ikonne asked, referring to Abia State Governor Alex Otti. Ikonne also alleged internal disarray within Obi’s new political platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and said the absence of strong party structures would make it difficult for Obi to mount a serious challenge in 2027. He dismissed claims that the APC is struggling for credibility in the South-east, insisting that the ruling party has become the major destination for defectors from rival parties in the region. "The Igbos are not fools and no Igbo man wants to make one mistake two times. No not at all," he said. The APC chieftain also dismissed recent criticism of the President by the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial district, Eyinnaya Abaribe, saying the Senator knew that he has lost relevance and can not be re-elected in the coming election.

Chief (Elder) Leke Joseph Abejide, Bashiru Abdul Mohammed (BAM), has appealed to the people of Yagba East/West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency to consider the re-election of the lawmaker in the 2027 general election. Bashiru made the appeal while addressing a cross section of journalists at a press conference on Sunday in Abuja, where he stressed that continuity in representation would further consolidate the developmental and legislative gains recorded by the constituency at the National Assembly. Describing Abejide as a seasoned politician and an outstanding legislator, Bashiru said the call for a third term was informed by the lawmaker’s quality representation, people-oriented interventions, and effective participation in national lawmaking and oversight functions. The Public Relations expert, who is also the Chairman and Head of the Board of Directors of The Watch Newspaper & TV, noted that Abejide’s contributions to national growth, particularly through his oversight role with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), have earned him national recognition. According to him, the lawmaker was honoured in 2025 with the National Award of Excellence as the Most Outstanding Legislator from North Central Nigeria by the Movement Advocacy for Good Governance and Leadership Forum (MAGOLF). Also honored with the Distinguished Award of Excellence in Recognition of Humanitarian Services, legislative Excellence and a worthy Ambassador by the Ahmadu Bello University Alumni Association - Kogi State Chapter. Bashiru highlighted Abejide’s key legislative and oversight achievements to include the repeal of the old Customs Act and the enactment of the Nigerian Customs Service Act, 2023, as well as the sponsorship of the Federal Medical Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025. He explained that Abejide has consistently championed reforms in trade facilitation, revenue generation, anti-smuggling operations, modernisation of customs processes, and the implementation of the E-Customs project. Bashiru added that the lawmaker has also played a critical role in monitoring customs commands to ensure compliance with budgetary provisions, achievement of revenue targets, improvement in officers’ welfare, and effective regulation of Free Trade Zones to support local industries. He disclosed that the Customs Service exceeded its 2024 revenue target of ₦5.07 trillion, generating over ₦6.1 trillion, while the 2025 revenue target has been pegged at ₦10 trillion. According to him, Abejide has led public hearings on the E-Customs initiative, advocated the use of modern technology to secure Nigeria’s borders, and initiated investigations into illegal activities within bonded terminals and Free Trade Zones across the country. Speaking further, Bashiru said the lawmaker has remained deeply committed to constituency development, citing several interventions across Yagba Federal Constituency. "These include over ₦1 billion in widows’ support, feeding programmes and empowerment initiatives; ₦710 million in development support to 71 communities; and the inauguration of the Lion Squad security outfit to combat terrorism and insecurity in the area. "Other interventions, he said, include the donation of motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding machines and security vans to the Lion Squad, financial and material support to vigilante groups, provision of hundreds of millions of naira in non-interest loans to business women through the Leke Abejide Foundation, and the extension of the school feeding programme to Kabba/Bunu Federal Constituency." The media aide also listed the installation of solar streetlights, construction and maintenance of asphalt roads, sponsorship of free WAEC registration for students, donation of SUVs to party leaders and traditional rulers, and facilitation of federal employment opportunities for Okun sons and daughters into MDAs. He described Abejide as a national asset, noting that the lawmaker has expanded his political influence beyond Yagba Federal Constituency to the entire state, citing his appointment as recognition of his wider appeal, while making an emotional case for his re-election for a third term. The PR expert further outlined the benefits of continuity, saying Abejide’s re-election would guarantee experienced legislation, enhanced representation, greater leadership opportunities in the House of Representatives, increased access to constituency projects, stronger federal presence, and improved inclusion of Yagba indigenes in MDAs and parastatals. He, therefore, appealed to the people of Yagba East/West/Mopamuro to consider the lawmaker’s track record and capacity, urging them to entrust Abejide with a third mandate in the interest of sustained development and effective representation.
