PoliticsN54bn Renovation: Stop Distractions, Show Us Schools, Ikonne Challenges Otti by Jatuski(op): 5:11pm On Aug 19, 2025
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia state, Prince Paul Ikonne, has challenged Governor Alex Otti to stop “distracting the people with contradictions” and come clean on the ₦54 billion school renovation controversy.

The Governor at the weekend during his monthly media chat had dismissed claims that N54bn is missing from the state treasury, describing the allegations as baseless and a reflection of ignorance about government budgeting and spending processes.

Reacting to the Governor's claim through a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ujo Justice, PhD, Ikonne wondered why a governor who boasts of having “seasoned accountants” in his administration would be contradicting himself “all in a bid to downplay a now national issue and the question on the lips of every Abian: where are the schools, and where is the ₦54 billion?”

Ikonne reminded the governor that similar sums had been written off in the past without evidence on the ground, noting that about ₦18 billion was previously announced for school renovation with “nothing to show for it.”

Quoting an online media report - Sahara Reporters’ recent findings, Ikonne said the governor’s dismissal of the ₦54 billion expenditure claim as a “mistake” is contradicted by official state budget performance documents.

According to the reports, budget performance data shows that in the last quarter of 2024 alone, Abia State recorded ₦54.066 billion as spent on rehabilitation and repairs of public schools. The total amount spent throughout the 2024 fiscal year stood at ₦58.323 billion.

Ikonne argued that if Governor Otti insists that only ₦2.1 billion was spent on schools, then he must explain why his own administration’s budget records state otherwise.

He further pointed to the online report's review of the approved 2024 budget, which showed that ₦64.7 billion was allocated for renovation/modelling of 51 schools — averaging ₦1.26 billion per school.

“This data,” Ikonne stressed, “makes it clear that the governor is either deliberately misleading Abians or is unaware of what his government is signing off.”

He welcomed the Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted by the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), which is demanding a breakdown of the ₦54 billion, including the list of schools supposedly renovated, their names, locations, and the nature of works done.

“Governor Otti should stop hiding behind semantics. Budgets are estimates, but expenditures are facts. The documents clearly show ₦54 billion was reported as spent between October and December 2024. If he disputes this, let him publish the schools. Abians are not asking for excuses — we are asking for evidence,” Ikonne said.

The APC chieftain concluded by urging the governor to prioritize truth over propaganda.

"He added that Dr. Otti should realize that leadership is about accountability, not storytelling.

"He cannot claim to be the face of transparency while avoiding the simplest of questions: show us the schools."

PoliticsCAN Commends NSA Ribadu, Uba Sani Over Ansaru Arrests, Inclusive Governance by Jatuski(op): 6:26pm On Aug 18, 2025
*Says “We do not want to be people who only grumble, accuse

*Urges Kaduna Governor to sustain inclusive development

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has commended the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for the arrest of two notorious leaders of the Ansaru terrorist group, while also praising Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for strides in inclusive governance and infrastructure delivery.

Speaking during an interaction with journalists in Kaduna on Monday, the Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, described the arrests as a significant breakthroughs in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.

He said Nigerians must learn to balance criticism with appreciation whenever leaders and security agencies record tangible achievements.

“We do not want to be people who only grumble and accuse. We want to be people who, when we see what is right, we acknowledge it. The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, deserves enormous credit for the deliberate, intelligence-driven operation that led to the arrest of some of Nigeria’s most wanted terrorists,” Rev. Hayab stated.

Ribadu had earlier announced the capture of Mahmud Muhammad Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, Abbas, or Mukhtar, the self-styled Emir of Ansaru, alongside his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, popularly known as Mallam Mamuda.

The arrests, which came after months of intelligence-led operations between May and July 2025, were achieved in collaboration with the armed forces and security agencies.

Rev. Hayab called for sustained intelligence operations and the exposure of terrorist financiers, stressing that no country can grow in an atmosphere of division and instability.

According to him, sponsors of terror must be identified and brought to justice to restore lasting peace.

Turning to state matters, the Northern CAN chairman commended Governor Uba Sani for ongoing road projects and efforts to carry all communities along in governance.

He observed that while some roads in the state still require urgent attention, the ongoing projects, including the recently flagged-off ones, are indications of efforts being made to improve infrastructure. Hayab, therefore called on the governor to expedite action and ensure timely completion of the projects.

“We cannot expect all roads to be repaired in one day. But if the projects are executed in phases, then in the next one or two years, Kaduna people will see significant progress. While we are asking for more, we must also appreciate what has been done. That is why we say we are like Oliver Twist, thankful for what we have but asking for more,” Hayab said.

He however urged the governor to deepen inclusiveness, fairness, and equitable distribution of development projects across all communities, noting that the past culture of neglect must not be allowed to resurface.

On political appointments, Hayab welcomed recent inclusiveness but tasked the government to create more opportunities for qualified individuals from Northern Christian communities as he maintained that such appointees should be allowed to serve genuinely for the progress of Kaduna and Nigeria rather than being used against their own people.

Rev. Hayab urged Nigerians to unite across religious and ethnic divides, stressing that silence only emboldens mischief-makers while openness and appreciation encourage leaders to do more.

PoliticsN54bn: 'we Demand Explanation', APC Group Accuses Alex Otti Of Phantom Projects by Jatuski(op): 4:39pm On Aug 12, 2025
*Says Abia Governor running propaganda govt

A pro-All Progressives Congress in Abia state has asked state governor, Alex Otti, to explain how his government spent N54 billion on the renovation of public schools in the state.

The group operating under the platform of the Abian’s Best Interest Association, also warned the governor not to contemplate joining the APC in the state.

At a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja titled, "Where is Abia’s N54 billion?", the Convener of the group, Hon. Barrister Eze Chikamnayo, said his group had visited several Local Government Areas in Abia state where they interacted with stakeholders on developmental issues before embarking on an on-the-spot inspection of public schools in particular.

"In Ugwunagbo, LGA, schools visited included Ihie Community Primary School, Ihie Ukwu Primary School, Asa Umunka Primary School, and Ikem Migrant Farmers School.

"In Isiala Ngwa South, the team inspected Nneise Primary School – Umuhu/Umuezu Nvosi, Umunkpeyi Primary School – Umunkpeyi Nvosi, and Obuba Primary School – Obuba Nvosi, Ikem Migrant Farmers School.

"From our dispassionate observation, we wish to hereby unequivocally decry the deplorable state of infrastructure in these schools, amongst others, noting that the decay was even more alarming in Isiala Ngwa South – the acclaimed and very contentious Local Government of the sitting Governor, Mr Alex Otti “One wonders then, if charity no longer begins at home.

"We went further to question the much-publicized ₦54 billion which appeared in the Abia State Budget Performance Report for the renovation and retrofitting of public schools for the year 2024 and stress that a Budget Performance Report, anywhere in the world, details accomplished projects and the actual amounts spent – not mere approved figures."

While accusing the Abia state Governor of undermining President Bola Ahmed Tinubu but claimed to be his supporters, Barr. Chikamnayo recalled that Governor Alex Otti as opposition leader had earlier promised that 'under my watch, not a Kobo of Abia resources will be stolen'.

"We now question how such words can be trusted when his administration thrives on non-disclosure and only tries to explain itself when prompted.

"We further wish to express shock that the state government included “recruitment of teachers, buying chalks our teaching aids” among the items for which the ₦54 billion was supposedly spent. “When did employing teachers and purchasing instructional materials become capital projects?

"We call on Abians to be vigilant, ask questions, and demand full accountability and transparency from the Alex Otti-led administration. “The future of our children is at stake, and no government should be allowed to mortgage it under the guise of inflated or questionable expenditure."

When asked whether the group will receive Alex Otti into APC if he decides to join, the APC group said: "He wants people to believe that he supports the president but the same time we know that in Abia state he is undermining Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

"As we speak, over N300 billion has come from President Tinubu reforms into Abia State government and all the local governments are grounded, castrated and completely insolvent.

"We will not receive such a liability into APC. That is what we are saying. Nobody in APC Abia state wants anything called Alex Otti. He is a liability."

He said Abia state on Alex Otti has poorly funded public schools compared to its neighbours in the same south east states.

"This lack of transparency and accountability we believe is a gross disservice to Abians.

"The Abia Best Interest Association and indeed the APC Abia State, therefore, wishes to draw attention of the pubic to the fact that allocations and various intervention funds coming to Abia State from the Federal Government, have tripled since the inception of the President Tinubu’s Administration - wondering why there was still nothing tangible to show in the education sector in Abia State compared to the situation in Imo and Enugu States, where the government has rebuilt, modernized, and equipped public schools with visible results for all to see."

AgricultureFederal Agencies Tour GM TELA Farm, Applaud Crop Performance by Jatuski(op): 2:43pm On Aug 08, 2025
Representatives from four key federal government agencies have undertaken a fact-finding visit to farms cultivating genetically modified (GM) maize and cowpea in Nigeria, expressing satisfaction with the crop’s performance.

The visit, organized as part of a “Seeing is Believing” tour, was led by the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) and included officials from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NABDA).

The mission aimed to deepen their understanding of GM crop performance and biosafety regulation in the country.

During the visit, Dr. Yarama Ndipaya of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) guided the delegation around the demonstration fields, highlighting the yield advantage and resilience of genetically modified crops compared to conventional varieties.

“We are struggling to meet the growing demand from farmers for TELA Maize and Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) Cowpea seeds,” said Dr. Ndipaya.

“These improved varieties consistently outperform conventional ones in yield, pest resistance, and adaptability. Farmers themselves are witnessing and affirming their benefits.” He added.

Dr. Ndipaya emphasized that GMO technology offers tailored solutions to the specific needs and ecological challenges of African agriculture.

“It is our responsibility to ensure smallholder farmers have access to technologies that can boost productivity and secure livelihoods,” he pointed out.

Dr. Rose Gidado, Director of Agricultural Biotechnology at NABDA, praised the success of the PBR Cowpea, noting that Nigeria remains the world’s largest producer and consumer of the crop.

She expressed confidence in the science behind GMOs, pointing out that over 45 countries—including the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, and Ghana—have adopted the technology.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Andrew Nanfwang, a local farmer, attested to the impact of GM technology on his farming outcomes.

“TELA maize has significantly improved my yields. The difference is clear,” he said.

Mr. Segun Alao of the National Orientation Agency described the tour as an enlightening experience.

“It gave us the opportunity to engage experts, ask tough questions, and see firsthand how the technology works. This helps us better contextualize the GMO debate, particularly on safety and regulation,” he noted.

The visit is part of broader efforts to build trust in agricultural biotechnology through transparency, public engagement, and evidence-based communication.

Founded in 2003 to address Africa’s food security prospects through agricultural technology, AATF believes that the agricultural sector is a key foundational pillar as Africa consolidates its economic growth and carves out its new position as a major global economic powerhouse and the next growth market in the world.

It was formed in response to the need for an effective mechanism that would facilitate and support negotiation for technology access and delivery and formation of appropriate partnerships to manage the development & deployment of innovative technologies for use by smallholder farmers in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA).

AgricultureFarmer Showcases GM TELA Maize, Urges Govt To Scale Up Seed Access by Jatuski(op): 12:46pm On Aug 08, 2025
An Abuja-based farmer, Mr. Andrew Nanfwang, has called on the Federal Government to accelerate access to TELA maize seeds for farmers across the country, following the remarkable performance of the genetically modified (GM) crop on his farm.

Speaking during a farm visit by representatives from several federal agencies, Mr. Nanfwang highlighted how the TELA maize variety helped him overcome a prolonged dry spell that affected most maize fields in his area.

"This year, we experienced a drought that lasted over three weeks. Most farms in my locality were severely impacted, but my TELA maize withstood the dry spell,” he said.

“People constantly stop by my farm, amazed by what they see. They ask what magic I’ve done, and I tell them—it’s TELA.” He added.

He explained that he first accessed the seed through a friend and decided to plant it experimentally. Encouraged by the results, he is now advocating for broader access.

“Nigeria has a maize production shortfall of about four million metric tonnes annually. Making TELA maize seed available to farmers nationwide would go a long way in bridging that gap. Already, more than ten farmers have approached me to reserve seeds for the next planting season,” he noted.

Nigeria currently produces an estimated 11 million metric tonnes of maize annually, falling short of the national demand of 15 million metric tonnes.

Dr. Yarama Ndipaya of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), who hosted the visitors, emphasized the clear performance advantages of GM crops like TELA maize over conventional varieties in terms of yield and climate resilience.

“Farmers are eager for these technologies because they deliver results,” said Dr. Ndipaya.

“We’re working to expand seed availability so that the government’s investment in agriculture translates into tangible benefits for farmers.” He added.

Mrs. Mercy Ugwu of the FCCPC praised the initiative and called for more farm-level tours to strengthen public understanding of GM technology.

“This kind of engagement is vital. It allows regulators, stakeholders, and even consumers to see the science in action and ask the important questions. It helps demystify GMOs,” she said.

The visit was part of a broader effort to promote science-based understanding of agricultural biotechnology and support informed policy decisions to improve food security.

The visiting delegation included officials from the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NABDA).

Founded in 2003 to address Africa’s food security prospects through agricultural technology, AATF believes that the agricultural sector is a key foundational pillar as Africa consolidates its economic growth and carves out its new position as a major global economic powerhouse and the next growth market in the world.

PoliticsIkonne Laments Dilapidated State Of Public Schools In Abia by Jatuski(op): 6:10pm On Aug 03, 2025
*Demands explanations on N54bn spent by Abia govt

The immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Lands Development Authority (NALDA), Prince Paul Ikonne, has raised serious concerns over the Alex Otti-led administration’s claim that it spent ₦54 billion on the retrofitting and construction of public schools across Abia State.

Speaking through his media assistant, Ujo Justice, PhD, while addressing stakeholders in Ukwa, Prince Ikonne described the government’s claim as “deeply suspicious, laughable, and insulting to the collective intelligence of Abians,” especially when compared to the current shameful condition of schools in the state. He questioned how any responsible government could boldly claim to have spent such an enormous sum—₦54 billion—on merely 53 schools, without corresponding evidence on the ground.

A state government report, signed by the Accountant General of Abia State, Njum Uma-Onyemenam, had revealed that the state generated N320 billion in 2024 from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations, internally generated revenue (IGR), and other capital receipts, excluding local government earnings and borrowings.

Among the key expenditures listed in the report—published on the state government’s official website on January 28, 2025—are include rehabilitation of Public Schools – N54.07 billion

In a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, Ikonne said: “What we see in Ukwa and several other parts of Abia is an education sector that is visibly in ruins. Ceilings are caving in, blackboards are barely usable, roofs are missing, walls are covered in moss, and some students still sit on bare floors under leaking roofs. If ₦54 billion was truly spent, then show us where. Which schools? What exactly was done? Let the government name them and take us there,” Ikonne queried.

The statement challenged challenged the government to immediately publish a breakdown of how the ₦54 billion was disbursed—identifying the contractors, locations, timelines, and photographic or video evidence of completed work.

According to him, anything short of this transparency amounts to a blatant disrespect for accountability and governance.

Prince Ikonne called on Governor Alex Otti to invite journalists, civil society organizations, and independent assessors to embark on an open and unscripted tour of the so-called renovated schools.

"Until then,” he warned, “this ₦54 billion remains a phantom project—something that only exists on budget documents and media headlines.”

He also pointed to the dilapidated condition of state-owned tertiary institutions such as the Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, where parts of the buildings have collapsed, leaving students in unsafe and non-conducive learning environments.

“If we can’t even maintain our own health college, how can we claim that we’re making progress in education? It is an utter disgrace and a sign of failed priorities,” he said.

Furthermore, Prince Ikonne reminded the public that under the current federal administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, states now enjoy increased federal allocations.

“The President, in his wisdom, has ensured that more resources flow to the states. One would have expected that the Abia State government would utilize this opportunity to transform critical sectors like education, health, and road infrastructure. Instead, what we are seeing is media packaging, propaganda, and empty political marketing.”

He emphasized that good governance is not about viral videos or curated press releases, but about results that citizens can see and benefit from.

“How on earth does anyone justify spending ₦54 billion on just 53 schools, with nothing visible to show? This must not be swept under the carpet. Abians must ask questions. Lawmakers must wake up. We need a comprehensive forensic audit of this expenditure. Our children deserve better,” Ikonne concluded.

He urged all well-meaning Abians, civil society groups, anti-corruption agencies, and legislative oversight bodies to rise in defense of accountability and demand answers from the state government.

EducationMalpractice Amnesty: Uniabuja Alumni Demands Vc’s Resignation, Condemns Action by Jatuski(op): 1:44pm On Aug 03, 2025
A group of past students of the of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as University of Abuja, has called for the immediate resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Lar Patricia Manko and dissolution of the institution's Senate.

This follows the recent granting of amnesty to students caught in examination malpractice by the Senate of the institution.

The sweeping academic amnesty for indicted students previously implicated in examination sharp Practices span five academic sessions.

The former students under the aegis of Concerned Alumni of University of Abuja, bared their minds in a press statement issued on Sunday in Abuja and jointly signed by Barrister Mohammad Usman and Oluwaseun Akintola.

According to the Alumni they were shocked when they received the news.

In their words, “when we first saw the news on our various alumni WhatsApp groups, we all dismissed it as fake news because , to the best of our knowledge, amnesty has never been granted to students caught cheating during examination “

The concerned alumni lamented that at a time when the school rating has remained low , throughout the years , among Nigerian universities, the current action by the Senate, chaired by the Vice Chancellor would completely make it “nothing more than a glorified secondary school.

“Where on earth does one hear of amnesty being granted to expelled or rusticated students who cheated in examination, were caught, faced panel and were either expelled or rusticated?

"Are they Niger Delta militants, Boko Haram terrorists , bandits or separatist agitators that they should be granted amnesty as part of peace building process? So those of us who forfeited our sleep, read through the night are foolish?

“We were more ashamed by the press statement issued and signed by the university’s acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, struggling in lies, to convince Nigerians that decision was taken in good faith and was not politically motivated or targeted at any specific group."

The group maintained that, “after speaking with many lecturers who are still very bitter over the action, we make bold to say it was a decision taken in the interest of powerful Politicians who were caught cheating during examination and punished by disciplinary Panels.

"A lecturer even told us he heard that millions of Naira was given to some persons in the school top management to free some political figures who feel their images were tarnished when the disciplinary committees of the school found them guilty of cheating during examinations.

“We are wondering why Professor Lar Patricia Manko has was appointed as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly the University of Abuja) for a six-month term would superintend over such shame action with barely a month to the end of her tenure”

The concerned alumni insisted that there is more to it than meets the eyes, noting that the defense and explanations made by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations further heightened suspicion in the minds of Nigerians.

“Firstly, why are the names of the students granted amnesty kept secret? We demand to know those who benefited from this shameful amnesty programme of our Alma Mata.

“Secondly, why the haste to grant amnesty to the erring students just about a month to the expiration of the tenure of the acting vice Chancellor ?

“Thirdly, what are the terms of the amnesty arrangements for these expelled or rusticated students? Are they to come and collect certificates and go, or to come and rewrite the examinations they were caught cheating in?

“Fourthly, some of those caught and expelled students who took the university to court and lost at the high court and the cases are now at the appeal court, is the institution not shooting itself on the foot?

“Fifthly, why is the education minister, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa and National Universities Commission very silent over the matter, are they accomplices?

“Sixth, why did the shameful amnesty only covers offences committed between the 2020/2021 academic year and the first semester of the 2024/2025 session? Why this selected period? Who are the special erring students in the period? Again, we demand to know.

"Seventh, why did the Senate, as the highest academic decision-making body in the university, chaired by the Vice Chancellor, abandon all pressing issues affecting the university, particularly the land issue with the FCT minister, and spent the full 189th Regular Senate’s Meeting of Wednesday, May 28, 2025 to deliberate and grant amnesty to corrupt students”

The group also noted that the “morale of the lecturers who caught those big Abuja politicians and money bags cheating during examination is down. After refusing millions of Naira as bribes and most of them got life threating messages, only for the top leadership to collect the same money or more and grant them this shameful amnesty. How on earth do anyone expect these lecturers to continue standing firm in the face of these show of despicable shame “

The group gave the institution seven days to revert the amnesty granted to the students or face legal actions by the concerned alumni of the institution saying, “we must act fast before the credentials we carry become worthless papers due to the actions of the current managers of our Alma Mata”

The university’s acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob had at the weekend, issued a statement explaining that the action of the institution was in good faith and not political motivated.

According to him, “The students who benefitted from this amnesty cut across all faculties and levels. The decision was a result of careful consideration and aimed at ensuring fairness in academic justice,”

Politics2027: Old Bende Young Professionals Disown Ikwechgh’s Endorsement Of Gov Otti by Jatuski(op): 7:06pm On Jul 30, 2025
A group of young professionals from Old Bende of Abia State has debunked claims that Governor Alex Otti has been endorsed for a second term by stakeholders from the area.

It said at no time did the people of the area convene a meeting to even discuss the politics of 2027, not to talk of endorsing anyone for the governorship.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group, OLD BENDE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS, dismissed the purported endorsement of Otti by the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, Hon. Mascot Ikwechegh, as “null and void” since it failed all democratic criteria.

In the statement signed by the President, Barr. Chima Charles Ogbonnaya, and the Secretary, Hon. Chief Dike Chidozie Okwara (Dike Ohafia), the group described those who participated in the event as impostors since they didn’t have the mandate of Old Bende people to take such a weighty decision.

According to the group, Hon. Ikwechegh abandoned his legislative duties of representing the people of Aba to dabble into a matter he clearly lacked the power and capacity to address.

It noted that, in the first instance, the governorship should rightly be occupied by the people of Abia North in Old Bende come 2027, while a meeting is yet to be convened to deliberate on who the zone should support.

“What happened in Hon. Ikwechegh’s sitting room is a parody of the absurd. It was premature and presumptuous. If it were in the military, all those who attended that circus show should have been court-martialed,” the group averred.

The group fumed that, apart from the fact that Ikwechegh cannot speak for Old Bende, it would be preposterous for Old Bende people to endorse anyone outside their own sons and daughters.

“Old Bende has so many sons and daughters who are qualified to run for Governor in 2027. We have Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu, the current number six man in the country; we have Dr. Sampson Uche Ogah, a former Minister; we have Dr. Philips Nto, a former Commissioner and one-time Provost of Abia State College of Education, Technical, Arochukwu. We also have Elder Etigwe Uwa (SAN), a prominent lawyer from the zone. Chief Chikwe Udensi, Chief Chris, Bar. Ete Igwe, Nnenna Ukeje, Nkeiru Onyejiocha, etc., among other prominent and eminent sons and daughters who can run and win the governorship in 2027,” the group declared.

The Old Bende Young Professionals deplored the use of traditional rulers as pawns in the political chessboard and warned them to desist from being used by politicians with selfish agendas.

According to them, “While we acknowledge that there is hunger in the land, our traditional rulers should preserve their integrity and dignity by confining themselves to their cultural roles in society.”

The group advised Ikwechegh to also refrain from usurping the roles of Old Bende elders and concentrate on representing the people of Aba in the House of Representatives.

Said the group, “If Ikwechegh is genuinely committed to serving the people of Old Bende, he should consider contesting for the House of Representatives in Bende come 2027 and relinquish his current seat to the Ngwa people to promote fairness, equity, and rotational leadership.”

“Ikwechegh’s current shenanigans, undemocratic and self-centred political acts are unacceptable and a blatant disregard for democratic principles and the autonomy of our region, Old Bende,” the young professionals concluded.

*Congratulates Super Falcons, tasks Governor on resuscitation of Enyimba FC

The immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Lands Development Authority (NALDA), Prince Paul Ikonne, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Super Falcons of Nigeria for their outstanding performance and triumph at the just concluded Africa Women’s Nations Cup.

In a statement released on Monday by his media assistant, Ujo Justice PhD, Prince Ikonne described the victory as not only a celebration of athletic excellence but also a powerful reminder of the potential within Nigeria’s sports sector, especially women’s football.

He lauded the determination, discipline, and patriotic spirit displayed by the Super Falcons, which, according to him, serves as a source of pride and unity for all Nigerians.

"This remarkable victory has once again placed Nigeria at the pinnacle of African women’s football. It is a testament to the resilience and world-class talent our nation continues to produce. The Super Falcons have proven that with the right support, Nigerian sports can dominate the global stage,” he said.

While rejoicing with Nigerians over the historic win, Prince Ikonne also used the occasion to draw attention to the declining state of sports development in Abia State, particularly the deplorable condition of Enyimba Football Club of Aba — once the pride of Nigerian club football and two-time back-to-back champions of the CAF Confederation Cup.

He expressed deep concern that Enyimba FC, a club that once inspired millions and put Aba and Abia State on the global sports map, has become a shadow of its glorious past due to poor management, political interference, and a lack of visionary investment.

"Enyimba FC is not just a football club; it is a cultural and economic asset to the people of Aba and Abia State. Sadly, what we now see is a politicized and struggling club that no longer commands the respect it once did across Africa. We must return Enyimba to the days of continental glory,” he stated.

Prince Ikonne called on the Abia State Government to take urgent, apolitical steps to reposition Enyimba FC by investing in modern infrastructure, hiring competent football administrators, and creating a professional ecosystem that allows the club to thrive independently of partisan politics.

He emphasized that sports development, if properly harnessed, can serve as a tool for youth engagement, crime reduction, job creation, and international recognition.

He further urged stakeholders in Abia to treat sports as serious business, worthy of the same strategic planning and investment given to other sectors.

"As we celebrate the Super Falcons, let us also look inwards and address the rot that has stifled our local sports institutions. Enyimba FC deserves better. The young talents in Abia deserve a platform to dream and achieve. Sports should unite and develop, not divide and frustrate," he added.

Prince Ikonne reaffirmed his commitment to championing youth and sports development in Abia State, expressing hope that the government will rise to the occasion and restore Enyimba Football Club to its rightful place among Africa’s elite.

PoliticsAba State: Stop Attacking Ikonne's Patriotic Call, Analyst Warns Alex Otti by Jatuski(op): 7:01pm On Jul 25, 2025
*Says EX-NALDA boss means well, patriotic

*Cautions Governor Otti against media bullying

A researcher and political analyst based in Abia state, Dr. Ujo Justice, has cautioned Governor Alex Otti to stop media attack on the immediate-past Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), Prince Paul Ikonne, over his call for the creation of Aba State.

The public affairs commentator described Prince Ikonne's call as patriotic, adding that the call for creation of Aba state was a legitimate political expression rooted in the quest for equity, development, and fair representation.

The former NALDA boss had on Thursday criticized Governor Otti’s stand against the creation of additional state for South-east but commended Imo state governor Hope Uzodimma's stand for the new state.

Responding to the report, Governor Otti through his media aide Ferdinand Ekeoma, in a statement titiled "Aba State Creation: Paul Ikonne Needs Help to Salvage His Hate-ravaged Mind", described former NALDA boss as "hate-ravaged,” mind.

Speaking with newsmen on Friday, the Abia born Dr. Ujo Justice, however, cautioned the Alex Otti's state government against media bullying, saying the governor’s statement" is not a defense of governance, but an attempt to silence dissent. Resorting to insults, distorting past events, and questioning academic credentials without proof is nothing but intellectual laziness."

According to Dr. Justice, Paul Ikonne is not an opportunist. He is not seeking appointment. He is not playing to the gallery. He is asking the hard questions that many are too afraid to ask.

He said: "Prince Paul Ikonne did not incite division; he illuminated reality. His call for the creation of Aba State was a legitimate political expression rooted in the quest for equity, development, and fair representation — a demand many leaders from the South East, including progressive voices across party lines, have long echoed.

"Rather than engage with the merit of his argument, the Governor’s media aide descended into personal insults, calling Ikonne “hate-ravaged,” “infantile,” and “clannish.” Such vile expressions should have no place in public discourse, especially from the office of a sitting governor.

"In truth, Ikonne’s words were firm but patriotic. And in a democracy, that should be respected."

In contrary, the political analyst said Dr. Alex Otti, who has consistently positioned himself as a technocrat, but his arguments against state creation lack the nuance and sensitivity expected of a leader governing a multi-ethnic and politically conscious state like Abia.

"It is on record that Governor Otti, in 2020, wrote against the creation of additional states, citing economic impracticality. While that is a valid intellectual concern, what he fails to admit is the underlying injustice in Nigeria’s current state structure — particularly against the South East which remains the only region with five states. This imbalance directly affects representation, federal appointments, and resource allocation.

"Ikonne's position was not that of a sectional warrior, but of a nationalist calling for correction of a decades-long injustice. To reduce that to clannishness is either a deliberate misrepresentation or a poor grasp of political history."

Dr. Justice said rather than focus on real governance challenges, the Governor's aide took a deep dive into history, hurling unverified allegations from as far back as 2007 on Prince Paul Ikonne.

"As Commissioner for Lands, Ikonne introduced reforms that streamlined land allocation and usage.

"As Executive Secretary of NALDA, he led federal agricultural projects that empowered farmers in states across the country, despite limited collaboration from some state governments.

"His approach to public service has always been focused on productivity and results — not media drama.

"The accusation that he "neglected Abia" while serving at NALDA is disingenuous. National appointments require national scope. That Abia did not benefit from NALDA as Ekeoma claimed is a reflection of non ethnic bais and should have a more reflection of poor synergy from state actors than any failure on Ikonne's part."

He also called that Paul Ikonne’s advocacy for Aba did not start recently.

"Long before it became politically fashionable to pose with potholes for the cameras, Ikonne had spoken passionately about the economic potential of Aba and the need for strategic investment in its people.

"The current government may be renovating roads and repainting walls, but cosmetic development without political inclusion is not enough. Ikonne simply asked, “Where are the Aba indigenes in this government? Where is their voice in this administration?” That question deserves an answer — not a tantrum."

While calling for a better politics in Abia state, the political analyst said: "As researcher, and proud son of Abia, I can boldly say that this state deserves more than bitter media wars and vendetta-driven communication. It deserves leadership that welcomes criticism, not one that weaponizes press releases to hound political opponents.

"If the current government has any confidence in its performance, it should focus on delivering its promises, not throwing mud at those who dare to speak.

" Prince Paul Ikonne is a visionary, a patriot, and a political bridge-builder. History will remember him for his courage, consistency, and conviction — not for the lies peddled by those threatened by the truth.

"Let us rise above media mudslinging and return to politics of ideas, vision, and service. Abia is watching."

BusinessCustoms Assures Of Safe Business Corridor Along Lagos-abidjan Trade Route by Jatuski(op): 9:03pm On Jul 24, 2025
*Says over one hundred and sixteen thousand metric tonnes of made-in-Nigeria goods crossed Sene border

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has assured legitimate business men and women that the Lagos-Abidjan corridor remains safe and conducive for lawful trade.

This was expressed at a press briefing on the operational activities of the Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, covering the period from MAY 14 to July 24, 2025 , held at the ECOWAS Complex, Joint Border Post, Seme-Krake Border, on July 24, 2025.

Reading the text of the briefing, Customs Area Controller
Seme Area Command, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo (PhD), said that, "To Nigerians and legitimate traders, I assure you that the Lagos-Abidjan corridor remains safe and conducive for lawful trade.

"However, to those who engage in illegal activities, let me sound a clear warning: steer clear of this corridor, as the Seme Area Command will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law upon you. We remain committed to protecting Nigeria’s economic interests, fostering legitimate trade, and ensuring the security of our borders. Together, we will continue to build a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria."

He said that it is with a sense of duty and commitment to national security that he was holding the press briefing to provide an update on their recent operational achievements of the Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command from 14 May to 24 July 2025.

On anti-smuggling activities, he said that a lot of success was recorded.

"For the past two weeks, between the 1st July and 19th July 2025, the operatives of the Command acting on credible intelligence and coordinated enforcement strategies, successfully intercepted and seized a total of Five (5) trucks laden with smuggled goods along the Lagos-Abidjan corridor.

"The trucks were found to contain a total of Two Thousand Eight Hundred (2,800) foreign parboiled rice 50Kg each, and Two Hundred and Fifty (250) bales of second –hand clothing.

"The Duty Paid Value of the seized rice and the means of conveyance (trucks) is Nine Hundred and Nineteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand, Six Hundred and Twenty-Six Naira (₦919,500,626.00k) only.

"Other notable seizures during the period include: Eight Hundred and Ninety Eight (898) parcels of Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana), One Thousand Three Hundred and Nineteen (1,319) bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each), Forty (40) bags of Sugar (50kg each), Sixty-Four (64) bags of Flour (50kg each), Fifty (50) cartons of Ketchup Tomato, One (1) boat and engine, Twenty (20) bales of second-hand clothing, Four (4) bales of used shoes

"The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of all seizures during the period under review is One Billion, Two Hundred and Sixty-Eight Million, Seven Hundred and Ninety-Four Thousand, Four Hundred and Seventy-Four Naira (₦1,268,794,474.00k) only.

"This operation is a testament to the vigilance, resilience, and doggedness of the officers and men of the Seme Area Command, as well as the collaborative support from other security agencies, particularly the Nigerian military.

"As you are aware, the Federal Government of Nigeria has placed a ban on the importation of rice through land borders to protect our rice farmers and millers and reduce dependency on imported rice. Nigeria is the highest producer of rice in Africa, with an annual output exceeding 8 million metric tonnes, surpassing Egypt and Tanzania. However, our rice mills continue to face challenges due to insufficient patronage, which hampers their ability to operate at full capacity. This ban is a strategic measure to boost local production and ensure the sustainability of our agricultural sector.

"Regrettably, some unpatriotic elements persist in engaging in illegal importation, undermining the nation’s economic growth. Let me make it unequivocally clear that the Seme Area Command is not, and will never be, a fertile ground for smugglers. These monumental seizures send a strong message to those involved in illicit activities that the operatives of the Command remain resolute, equipped, and prepared to enforce the Federal Government’s fiscal policies with unwavering determination," he said.

According to him, in the spirit of inter-agency collaboration, some of the seized items, particularly the marijuana, will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for discreet investigation and further action.

"This underscores our commitment to working closely with sister agencies to ensure the security and well-being of our nation," he assured.

On revenue generation, he informed that over one billion Naira was realized

"I am pleased to announce that the Seme Area Command, through commitment and professionalism, generated Total revenue of One Billion, Five Hundred and Ninety-Three Million, Six Hundred and Seventy-Six Thousand, One Hundred and Twenty-Three Naira, Twenty-Six Kobo (₦1,593,676,123.26k) for the months of May and June 2025.

"This achievement reflects our sustained efforts at ensuring that all revenue leakages are blocked, and every legitimate kobo due to the Federal Government is collected without compromise," he informed.

Explaining successes recorded in export/trade facilitation, he said that over one hundred and sixteen thousand metric tonnes (116,723.26MT) of made-in-Nigeria goods crossed the border on that axis.

" In line with the Federal Government’s agenda on economic diversification through non-oil exports, the Command facilitated the movement of One Thousand, Eight Hundred and Thirty-Seven (1,837) trucks, equivalent to over One Hundred and Sixteen Thousand metric tonnes (116,723.26MT) of made-in-Nigeria goods.

"These exports had a Free On Board (FOB) value of Twenty-Two Billion, Three Hundred and Thirty-Eight Million, Three Hundred and Eighty-Eight Thousand, Nine Hundred and Seventy-Six Naira and Ten Kobo (₦22,368,388,976.10k) only.

"While the National Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) fees stood at One Hundred and Eleven Million, Eight Hundred and Forty-One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-Four Naira and Eighty-Seven Kobo (₦111,841,944.87K) only.
(12) I must commend the principal officers and the entire Officers and men of the Seme Area Command for their unrelenting efforts in combating smuggling.

"Their dedication, coupled with the support of other security agencies, particularly the military, has been instrumental in these successes. When situations escalate, the military’s reinforcement has proven invaluable, and we remain grateful for their partnership," he said.

The Comptroller also extended appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs and his management team for their unwavering support.

*The recent allocation of 12 patrol vehicles to the Seme Area Command has significantly enhanced our capacity to patrol and secure the Lagos-Abidjan corridor, and the results of this investment are evident in the seizures we are showcasing today," he said.

The beneficiaries and community leaders expressed appreciation for the timely intervention, describing it as a critical lifeline for affected households.

NEMA remains committed to its mandate of coordinating disaster response and supporting vulnerable populations across the country in times of need.

PoliticsEx-nalda Boss Tackles Alex Otti Over Opposition To State Creation by Jatuski(op): 5:47pm On Jul 24, 2025
*Commends Governor Uzodimma's stand

Immediate-past Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), Prince Paul Ikonne, has commended Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state for his avowed support for the vexed issue of creation of an additional state for the South-east.

For the Prince, Governor Uzodinma's principled stand aligns with the position of well meaning Igbos and Nigerians across the different zones who have at various times decried the grave injustice against the Igbos which has innevitably, led to the eastern region having for instance, 15 senators whereas other regions have 18 to 21 senators; more access to federal resources and appointments, with the consequent disproportionate influence in national affairs.

In a statement released Thursday in Abuja by his media aide, Chiagoziem Enoch, Prince Ikonne, viewed Governor Otti's ambiguous stand during the hearing on the 1999 Constitution review, held in Owerri on July 19th as a huge waste of an opportunity for him to stand and be counted for the entire Eastern Nigeria in a matter his counterpart, Senator Uzodima in Owerri showed such zeal to drive.

Otti had said Nigeria does not need additional states since the existing ones lack viability for economic self-sustainability.

Ikonne, however, said: "But for those who know the Abia governor, that occasion afforded him the golden opportunity to express his deep resentment and vendetta against a section of Abia who must not be allowed the casual luxury of an innocuous boast of being the indigenes of Aba."

According to Ikonne, Governor Otti has always hated the fact that Aba is located where it is today which unfortunately he cannot do anything about.

"Seeing that he lacks the power literally to undo what God has done in his eternal plans, he has resorted to other nebulous ways to express his frustration.

"On assumption of office, the first thing Governor Otti did was to rush to Aba solely to declare to a crowd of both indigenes and non-indigenes that Aba is a no man's land, an act that was capable of needlessly pitching the indigenes against non-indigenes.

"Many wondered why he had to do that, considering that Aba has always been known to be at peace with its residents, not minding who is an indigene and who is not.

"Thankfully, the Aba spirit and its 'Nwa Aba' cliche, a trans-sectional phrase and aura that has adhesively bound the city, swallowed that mischievous and ill-intended divisive declaration which had the capacity to initiate deep sectional sentiments in that great city."

The Crown Prince frowned at Otti's" "dubious and infantile attempt to make us believe that an additional state in the East is not viable, and queried his credibility as a first-class economist in 21st century."

The statement believes that Otti knows the truth, that the new frontier is the knowledge driven economy which Aba and the people of Abia pride themselves of and which has been successfully deployed by countries like Finland, Israel, Singapore, Netherlands and so on.

"The Governor deliberately forgot that the finite nature of natural resources has made proactive administrators to redirect their focus to other initiatives that provide sustainable development, not prone to the vagaries of nature by depending only on natural resource endowments, but one that will initiate knowledge based programs and policies that will move the new state away from lazily looking up to the Federal Government for monthly handouts as it is presently in Otti's "New Abia."

He further stressed that the clear marginalization of Ndi Igbo has continually provided the canvass upon which the agitation for a sovereign nation for ndi Igbo has rested. He explained that the people who have canvassed for the East to be at par with the other zones in terms of states believe that redressing this ugly imbalance will help to douse the agitation in our zone and offer a feeling of inclusion for Ndi Igbo in the Nigerian state.

"It is therefore worrisome that Gov. Otti who should be in the frontline with the likes of Senator Uzodinma in leading the agitation for the creation of additional state for Abia to address this abnormally is the one leading the gang to frustrate the actualization of an additional state for the South East

"It must be remembered that the agitation for an additional state and the viability of Aba State has passed the needed criteria thresholds. What remains is the declaration of what our fathers have put in their very lives and resources to achieve."

The former NALDA boss encouraged all to commend the frontline leadership of the Governor of Imo state Hope Uzodinma which he said has offered in support of Aba State and called on all well meaning Easterners from every state of the East to que behind him in the struggle.

He said: "Abians for the avoidance of any doubt, will not relent in demanding for an additional state as it is sine quo non to peace and justice in the Federation."

PoliticsTinubu Must Act On Alleged Land Grabbing By FCT Minister Wike - Timi Frank by Jatuski(op): 3:37pm On Jul 23, 2025
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has expressed deep concerns over the disturbing allegations of land grabbing, corruption, and gross abuse of office by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the deafening silence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the issue.

Frank in a statement in Abuja, said recent revelations by an online media - People’s Gazette and Senator Ireti Kingibe have brought to light a series of atrocities and impunity being allegedly perpetuated under the leadership of the FCT Minister.

According to him, Wike’s alleged illegal allocation of lands to his family members, cronies, and political associates at the expense of genuine applicants “is a national scandal that demands urgent intervention.”

It is alleged that Wike dishes out land on a daily basis to friends, family, and associates, while ordinary citizens and investors with genuine needs for both personal and commercial purposes are sidelined.

His actions reportedly extend to revoking land from an embassy just to gift it to a personal associate - a clear case of impunity.

Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, said: “This blatant disregard for the rule of law will discourage local and foreign investors, leading to economic setbacks for the FCT and Nigeria as a whole.”

He condemned the seeming silence of President Tinubu and anti-corruption agencies on the matter.

He said: “Mr President let me remind you that former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Betta Edu’s case was not as grievous compared to what Wike has done yet you suspended her and sacked her.

“So why is Wike’s case different despite the public expose’? This clearly shows that you are either a beneficiary of Wike’s land grabbing spree or an accomplice by your refusal to act in the face of public outcry against the heist.”

He added: “The continued silence of President Tinubu in the face of these weighty allegations is both troubling and unacceptable. If these actions by the FCT Minister go unchecked, they will tarnish the President’s image and administration.

“What does this silence say about your government, Mr. President? Are you, by omission or commission, endorsing these corrupt practices to build patronage and raise funds for the 2027 elections?”

He described the failure of the nation’s security and anti-corruption agencies - the Police, EFCC, ICPC and others - to probe the allegations as equally disturbing, saying, “Are these institutions now complicit in Wike’s alleged corrupt practices?”

He equally lamented the inaction of the National Assembly with oversight responsibility over the FCT administration.

He said: “It is shocking that the National Assembly, which has oversight functions over the FCT, has remained quiet despite these allegations. Could it be that they, too, have benefitted from Wike’s land distribution scheme?”

He insisted that Wike’s alleged land-grabbing tendencies are not new: “His record in Rivers State speaks volumes, where he is rumoured to be one of the highest private landowners. Now, he is replicating the same pattern in the FCT, using proxies such as his father, children, siblings, and close friends.

“How did his 95-year-old father or children, who have never worked, suddenly acquire prime lands in Abuja? This reeks of conflict of interest and corruption of the highest order.”

He called on the President to act now to save his image and that of his administration over the brewing scandal.

He said: “Mr. President, the Nigerian people are watching. If you fail to act, history will remember that by 2027, you left the indigenous people of Abuja as internally displaced persons in their own city.

“You promised Nigerians a government of integrity. Where is the investigation panel you once vowed to set up? Has it all been lip service?”

The Bayelsa-born political activist demanded the immediate resignation or suspension of Wike to allow for an independent investigation into the allegations, saying, “Anything short of this will imply that you (President Tinubu) and your family are direct beneficiaries of this corruption.

“Suspend Wike immediately and set up an independent panel of inquiry into all FCT land allocations since he assumed office.

“Ensure accountability for all public officers involved in this alleged land-grabbing scandal and restore confidence in the rule of law and the sanctity of the FCT’s land administration process.

“Enough is enough! Wike hides under the guise of flashy projects while engaging in unprecedented corruption. Past FCT Ministers developed new districts such as Wuye, Jabi, and Jahi without looting or noise. Why must we tolerate such impunity now?

“Mr. President, relieve Wike of his duties and let him answer for his sins. Your inaction will only confirm that impunity and corruption are the hallmarks of your administration.”

PoliticsEbonyi Indigenes Demand Sack Of SSG Over Alleged Diversion Of State Resources by Jatuski(op): 10:35am On Jul 22, 2025
*Give Governor Nwifuru 48 hours ultimatum

Following a reported Court order ordering the interim forfeiture of alleged one billion Naira (N1 billion) diverted by the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government (SSG), Prof Grace Umezuruike, a governance and accountability platform, the Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora (AEISCID) has demanded immediate sack of the state SSG by Governor Francis Nwifuru.

The Ebonyi group also condemned the state government's posture the reported case.

At the weekend, an Uyo Division of the Federal High Court had ordered interim forfeiture of over N1 billion allegedly diverted by the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government (SSG), Grace Umezurike, and her aide, Ngene Nwanna Onyeabor.

The judge, Maureen Onyetenu, granted the forfeiture order on 8 July, according to a court document obtained by PREMIUM TIMES.

The court order followed an ex parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Reacting to the development, the Diaspora group wondered how such humongous corrupt practice happened in a state like "Ebonyi where abject poverty walk on the streets stark naked and it took a conscious social critic, Nwoba Chika Nwoba to petition the anti-graft agency before it acted and froze the said accounts with an order to conduct discreet investigations into the matter is not for us a very big issue."

In a statement signed on Tuesday by AEISCID President (Worldwide), Ambassador Pascal Oluchukwu, asked Governor Nwifuru to immediately drop his SSG within 48 hours for a thorough, discreet and unhindered probe by the anti-graft agency.

According to the group, cases of corruption has been more prevalent in the current leadership of the state under Governor Nwifuru- "arguably more than all the past administrations since the return of democracy combined.

"We ask: What else does the Governor who claims to be a lawyer need to understand that once a _prima facie_ case has been established leading to the freezing of the said accounts by the anti-graft agency for a possible forfeiture of the diverted funds to the Federal Government, the SSG should have been asked to step aside immediately?

"This is a common ethical and standard practice that is well in accordance with the principles of transparency, accountability and probity in governance which would ensure that all allegations are substantiated without let or hindrance using the privileges and rights of powerful office she occupies and connections of some powerful people in government.

"We are thoroughly ashamed of the disposition of the State government towards this grave allegation that has very severe and negative consequences for the State and Ebonyians home and in the diaspora.

" This is why we ask Governor Nwifuru to immediately drop his SSG within 48 hours for a thorough, discreet and unhindered probe by the anti-graft agency. We further admonish the government to show cause by entering to be joined as a party in the suit before the Federal High Court so that in any event the loot is proven to be that of the State, the government can easily reclaim the funds and deploy same for the benefit of the common masses.

"Already, apart from the pervasive poverty biting the common Ebonyians that one could literally cut through with a knife, there are many projects started by this administration which are yet to receive the needed attention obviously due to the same grand-scale corruption that has been the order of the day that the said money can effectively be ploughed back into."

The group, however, called on the EFCC to widen its nets to help Ebonyi people recover loots allegedly diverted by contractors within the last two years of the present administration and the past eight years of Umahi-led administration.

"AEISCID would like the EFCC officials and the people alleged to be involved in this heinous financial crime which has gone on in our dear State for over a decade to know that our eyes are consistently on them and we would follow through this matter till all the funds are not only recovered but those responsible for the alleged diversions are consequently brought to book.

"We are fully aware of the fact that Ebonyi cannot breathe because former Governor Umahi is still holding the State by the neck and his successor strongly by the balls.

"This is not only about Nwifuru's government and its appointees who have allegedly been amassing wealth from the public coffers. It is certainly about a people and their collective destiny to save their State from shame and eventual doom!"

EducationABU Gets €5m To Develop Ai-powered Microscope For Diagnosing Diseases by Jatuski(op): 8:43pm On Jul 21, 2025
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), has secured a grant of five million Euros (€5 million) to develop an AI-powered microscope for diagnosing parasitic diseases, including African trypanosomiasis, malaria, leishmaniasis, and filariasis.

This was disclosed in a statement made available by the Public Affairs Directorate,
Office of the Vice-Chancellor,
Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, dated Monday July 21, 2025.

It said that the grant was won through MultiplexAI, the first Horizon Euro-funded project to be hosted at the university and one of the few awarded in Nigeria. MultiplexAI project was selected for funding under the Horizon Europe EDCTP3 call on ‘Innovative Digital Health Solutions for Sub-Saharan Africa’.

This was part of a broader call that received 240 proposals across six topics focused on digital diagnostics. After a rigorous evaluation process, only four projects were selected for funding, including MultiplexAI.

Dr. Gloria Dada Chechet, a Reader at the Department of Biochemistry at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, is the Scientific Project Lead of MultiplexAI. Chechet, a biochemist and molecular parasitologist, is a researcher at the institution's Africa Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB) with expertise in diagnostics, disease control, and gender equity in global health.

A fellow of the Science by Women and Learn Africa programs Fundaci'on Mujeres Por Africa, Chechet has received multiple international fellowships supporting her research in neglected tropical diseases and representation of African women in global health research.

AgricultureTELA Maize Boosts Yields, Profits For Nigerian Farmers, New Study Shows by Jatuski(op): 12:03pm On Jul 21, 2025
A new on-farm study has confirmed that TELA Maize hybrids are delivering significantly higher yields, greater profits, and better pest resistance for Nigerian farmers compared to conventional maize varieties.

The trials, conducted during the 2024 wet season by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) and its partners, revealed that the TELA maize hybrid SAMMAZ 75T achieved average yields of 5.09 tons per hectare, a 54% increase over the 3.30 tons per hectare recorded for non-TELA maize.

This yield advantage translated into higher farm income, with TELA maize earning ₦3.16 million per hectare, compared to ₦2.05 million from conventional maize.

The on-farm demonstrations preceded the January 2024 commercialization of four TELA Maize hybrids—SAMMAZ 72T, 73T, 74T, and 75T—developed by scientists at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

These varieties are bred to resist fall armyworm, stem borers, and withstand drought stress, making them more resilient in Nigeria’s increasingly variable climate.

Conducted across multiple sites with 120 participating farmers, the trial involved each farmer cultivating 0.5 hectares of TELA maize and 0.5 hectares of non-TELA maize.

A total of 1.5 tons of seed was distributed for the trial. At harvest, the superior performance of TELA maize was evident—not just in yield but in reduced pest damage and lower pesticide use.TELA maize plots required fewer pesticide applications, averaging 1.3 sprays per season, compared to 2.1 sprays on non-TELA plots.

Only 22% of TELA maize farmers reported any pest damage, while 86% of non-TELA maize farmers experienced damage, with some recording losses as high as 50% to 66%.

“These findings confirm even our earlier national performance trials,” said Professor Rabiu Adamu, Principal Investigator for the TELA Maize project.

“No TELA maize farms recorded damage beyond one-third of the crop, whereas some non-TELA plots suffered losses of up to two-thirds. This level of protection is critical for smallholder resilience.

”The financial benefit was equally striking. TELA maize plots generated over ₦1.1 million more per hectare than conventional maize, driven not only by higher yields but also by savings on chemical inputs and labor. In dollar terms, farmers earned about USD 2,098.42 from TELA maize per hectare, compared to USD 1,360.47 from non-TELA plots.

Dr. Sylvester Oikeh, AATF’s Project Manager for TELA Maize, described the results as a milestone for Nigerian agriculture. “TELA maize represents a key step forward in achieving climate-resilient, profitable farming.

It delivers on multiple fronts—higher output, reduced input costs, and better environmental outcomes.”Farmer feedback echoed this sentiment. About 90% of participants expressed satisfaction with TELA maize performance.

Many described it as “stress-free” and “more reliable,” citing uniform germination, faster growth, and reduced need for spraying as major benefits.“

With TELA, I didn’t have to spray as much, and the maize still came out better than the others. It saves me time and money,” one farmer noted.

As Nigeria pushes for greater adoption of climate-smart and science-driven agricultural practices, TELA maize is gaining recognition as a transformative tool for smallholder farmers.

Its built-in pest resistance and drought tolerance align with national goals for improved food security, reduced pesticide use, and sustainable farming.

“TELA maize is not just another variety,” Dr. Oikeh emphasized. “It is a pathway to resilient, productive farming that empowers farmers to secure better livelihoods and ensure Nigeria’s food future.

”The successful outcome of the on-farm trials underscores the importance of continued investment in agricultural innovation and farmer-centered research. With wider adoption, TELA maize could mark a turning point for maize production in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa."

Founded in 2003 to address Africa’s food security prospects through agricultural technology, AATF believes that the agricultural sector is a key foundational pillar as Africa consolidates its economic growth and carves out its new position as a major global economic powerhouse and the next growth market in the world.

It was formed in response to the need for an effective mechanism that would facilitate and support negotiation for technology access and delivery and formation of appropriate partnerships to manage the development & deployment of innovative technologies for use by smallholder farmers in SSA:

Nairaland GeneralNEMA Unveils Early Flood Warning Campaign In Kaduna by Jatuski(op): 8:57pm On Jul 18, 2025
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched an early warning campaign in Kaduna State to mobilise proactive response to anticipated flood risks during the 2025 rainy season.

Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the agency, at a stakeholders engagement in Kaduna, said the campaign aimed to raise awareness and strengthen preparedness across flood-prone communities.

Represented by, Sulaiman Muhammad, Head of NEMA Operations in Kaduna, said Kaduna North and Chikun Local Government Areas had been identified as high-risk zones due to flash floods and blocked drainage channels.

She said flooding in recent years had resulted in loss of lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure, with damages running into billions of naira.

“Many Nigerians have suffered injuries and lost their life savings due to unmitigated flood incidents and associated secondary hazards annually,” she said.

She cited the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook as indicators of changing rainfall patterns and likely flood scenarios.

According to her, NEMA has developed flood risk maps, community vulnerability profiles, and response guides to aid disaster preparedness in Kaduna.

“As part of our early warning systems, we are prioritising community sensitisation, drainage clearance, stockpiling of relief items, simulation exercises, and livestock vaccination,” she added.

Umar said NEMA, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and local volunteers, would take warning messages directly to vulnerable communities.

She urged religious and traditional leaders, civil society groups, and the media to support the campaign and reinforce flood awareness.

She reaffirmed NEMA’s alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that “disaster management is everyone’s responsibility.”

Also speaking, NEMA’s Chief Disaster Risk Officer, Mrs Halima Galma, said 12 states and 43 LGAs had been classified as high-risk, while another 12 states were listed under medium-risk zones.

Galma said a technical forum held in March recommended improved coordination, targeted reforms, and better dissemination of early warnings.

She called for investments in flood-resilient infrastructure, GIS-based real-time mapping tools, and stronger communication channels.

Nairaland GeneralFlood: NEMA, Stakeholders Sensitise Kaduna Communities To Avert Disaster by Jatuski(op): 7:29pm On Jul 17, 2025
L
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday, engaged communities in Kaduna State to raise awareness and promote early action against the anticipated 2025 flood disasters.

The outreach, held under the agency’s national preparedness campaign, was aimed at mobilising local support and preventive measures to reduce the impact of flooding in high-risk areas.

Mr. Sulaiman Muhammad, Head of Operations, NEMA Kaduna Office, said the initiative was part of efforts to strengthen grassroots response before, during, and after emergencies.

“The essence of this engagement is to bring disaster awareness to the communities, where floods usually strike first,” he said.

Muhammad explained that warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had identified parts of Kaduna as flood-prone, making early sensitisation critical.

He stressed the need for communities to clear drainages, open waterways, and maintain hygiene to prevent not only flooding but related disease outbreaks.

According to him, early action by residents could help save lives and property before the arrival of government agencies or international responders.

Also speaking, Mr. Yahya Mohammed, Controller, General Safety Awareness and Environmental Support Initiative, urged communities to take ownership of flood prevention efforts.

“When the government builds drainages, the people must clean and maintain them. If disaster occurs, it is the community that suffers first,” he said.

Mohammed called for sustained environmental sanitation, adding that prevention remained the most effective strategy for flood risk reduction.

He commended NEMA, the Kaduna State Government, and development partners for their proactive response to the flood forecast.

The residents of Rafin Guza were trained on emergency rescue by Red Cross.

PoliticsStop Threatening Coalition, South-south Emerging Leaders Warn Peter Obi by Jatuski(op): 10:49am On Jul 17, 2025
*Say ex-Anambra Gov has another platform to contest in 2027

A group on the platform of South-South Emerging Leaders' Forum (Self) has cautioned former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, to stop threatening the recently formed Coalition under the platform of African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The forum also alleged that it has reliable information that Peter Obi will eventually dump Coalition like he did before presidential primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2022.

In a statement released on Thursday, signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Benjamin Kolowei, said if Obi will continue to blackmail the Coalition to zone presidential ticket to the South, the Northern region too should start agitation to have it so as to complete the 18 years the Southern Nigeria has held sway in the presidency.

According to Kolowei, why is Peter Obi afraid of open and transparent primary election?

"We note that Mr. Peter Obi and his obedient movement, in the recent time, have resulted to threatening and blackmailing the leadership of Coalition, we make bold to tell the former Anambra Governor that such strategy will not work, in fact, it has failed woefully.

"Record has shown that Mr. Obi has history of running away for primary election, which is the major aspect of democratic culture. If Mr. Obi claim to be a democrat, why is he always avoiding primary election? Why is he looking for a free presidential ticket? He did that as a governor and as recent as 2023, Mr. Obi abandoned PDP when it was time for primary election.

"As a forum of professionals and emerging leaders, we will not fold our hands and tolerate Peter Obi to frustrate the ongoing arrangements to rescue our Nation and have a credible alternative to the APC.

"We, hereby call on Mr. Peter Obi to stop his pretentious lifestyle as if he is a saint or the only Messiah Nigeria is waiting for. If Mr. Obi want to participate in a democratic contest he should respect the rules of the game. Though, he has never fought or contributed to development of democratic process in Nigeria, so he does not know what it takes.

"Obi and his Obidients should learn early that democracy is about contest, not about free launch or free ticket. It is not about blackmail.

"If Obi is looking for where he will be given free presidential ticket, the door is open. Although we have gathered reliably that Mr. Obi has secured another platform where he will soon unveil to contest in 2027, it is high time the leaders of ADC Coalition not sleep with their two eyes closed. We are making it public that Peter Obi is not ready to cooperate and work with Coalition leaders."

The group called on David Mark led ADC leadership not to bow to any pressure to zone the ticket of the party to any zone, adding that Nigerians should be allowed to decide what they want.

"We are appealing that the ADC National leadership should ensure a credible and transparent primary election that will produce an acceptable candidate. Whoever win the primary should be supported by all. If it is Peter Obi, if he still remain in Coalition, should not be denied the massive support," the statement said.

PoliticsZaria LGA Clears Air On Alleged Shops, Land Gifted To Reps Speaker's Wife by Jatuski(op):
*Warns public Against false narratives
.

The management of Zaria local Government Area of Kaduna State has debunked allegations on Social Media, insinuating that some shops or land in Kofar Doka Area and Amaru in Zaria City were given to the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Tajudeen Abbas.

This was expressed in a statement signed by the Special Adviser/Chief Press Secretary to the Zaria Local Government Executive Chairman, Ishaq Galadima, dated July 9, 2025.

"We are issuing this statement to address a matter that has garnered significant attention within the Zaria Local Government Area and beyond, concerning a land and shops transaction in Kofar Doka and Amaru, Zaria City.

"Recently, a Facebook post alleged that the shops and/or the Kofar Doka land were gifted to the wife of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen.

"This claim has sparked unnecessary speculation and misinformation, appearing to be a politically motivated attempt to undermine constituted authorities, including the chairman of Zaria local government council, Engineer Jamil Ahmad Muhammad and the Rt. Hon. Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen," it said.

The statement revealed that they are aware that one of the suspects involved, has made dangerous and inciting allegations about ICT Facility in Amaru Involving the Executive chairman of Zaria Local Government & Deputy Chief of Staff Ilyasu Balarabe.

The statement therefore, provided the following clarifications:

"1. The land was not gifted to anyone. Instead, it is part of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement between Zaria Local Government and Rich-view Global Nigeria Limited, signed in August 2024.

2. It is crucial to note that this agreement was made prior to the current Chairman's assumption of office in November 2024. The agreement does not involve the free allocation of land to any individuals, as alleged.

3. It is also important to note the attempt to drag the Executive Chairman of Zaria Local Government and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Speaker into scandals involving alleged non-payment of upkeep, which almost led to a violent riot."

It informed that in view of the unfounded allegations, investigation and legal proceedings
regarding the allegations is ongoing.

"A Facebook user, "Dan Hajia mai naira," made a post in Hausa stating: "an zalunchi al-umma tashar kofar doka a Zaria, kun kwace musu shaguna kun baiwa matar speaker ta gina plaza." This translates to: "the people of Kofar Doka in Zaria are cheated for taking away their shops and gifting them to the wife of the speaker to build plaza." This post was reported to the police by a supporter of the Executive Chairman of Zaria Local Government and the Speaker's wife, thereby becoming a case of public interest.

"It is noteworthy that the same "Barde" who shared the Kofar Doka post also made the alleged inciting post concerning the Chairman and the Deputy Chief of Staff.

"Upon filing the complaint at the Area Command in Zaria, the police invited the suspects. When they failed to honor the invitation, the police proceeded to arrest and detain one of the individuals who shared the kofar doka content and the publisher of the ICT Amaru content, as the original poster of the Kofar Doka content is currently at large.

"The arrested suspect was presented before a magistrate court within the legally required timeframe. An FIR was prepared, and he was arraigned on Monday morning, the 6th of July, 2025," in informed.

It therefore, wanted about the politicization of the matter.

"This issue is undeniably taking on a negative political dimension for several reasons:

"The arrest process was entirely legal, and both the complainant and the police adhered to due process without resorting to any brutal or unlawful means.
