*Says Abia governor will be defeated in 2027 A prominent group loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Abia Best Interest Association (A.B.I.A) has challenged 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, to prevail on the state governor, Alex Otti to show accountability on some of his projects. The APC group specifically challenged the state Labour Party government to publish the list, location, contractors and pictures of the purported 51 public school projects for which over 54 Billion Naira has been allegedly spent between the first and fourth quarter of 2024. Addressing a press conference on Monday in Abuja, the group led by Hon. Eze Chikamnayo, Esq, said Peter Obi do not have temerity to criticize any government if the only state being governed by his party is also indicative of systemic corruption, impunity, lack of transparency and accountability in Governance. According to him, Peter Obi should stop talking about Indonesia, China and others, but talk about the Labour Party government in Abia state. Peter Obi should stop being a hypocrite, talk about Abia Local Government grounded and stagnant because their monies have been hijacked by the Labour Party government in Abia state. He said: "If we talk about accountability at the federal level and we refuse to talk about if at the state and local government levels, we make ourselves hypocrites and it undermines the essence of good governance in Nigeria. "We have a message for Mr. Peter Obi. He is galvanizing to Indonesia, going to India, even going to Egypt to look for model on how he thinks Nigeria should be governed. I say to Mr. Peter Obi to stop the hypocrisy. You don't need to go to Indonesia or anywhere in the world. Mr. Peter Obi should go to Abia state. This us the only Labour Party (LP) state in Nigeria. "He should go there and ask Mr. Alex Otti how the N54 billion meant for education has been taken for Smart schools and no single school is to be found." The APC group while thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ignoring Alex Otti's invitation to commission some projects last week, added that the Governor will be roundly defeated by competent and capable loyal members of APC in the 2027 election. He said: "We will not welcome Mr. Alex Otti with his excess baggage, and with his corruption, and with his lack of transparency and with his lack of accountability to APC at the state. "Anybody who is thinking that he is going to cooperate with Mr. Alex Otti to continue his era of complete intimidation, his era of complete impunity, his era of complete anarchy in Abia State by joining APC through the backdoor, such a person is day-dreaming. Abia State APC has in its kitty competent men who are capable of joining hands with President Bula Ahmed Tinubu to make sure that APC and the Renewed Hope Agenda is made available to the people of Abia State, both at the state and the local government level. "So, therefore, we will replace Mr. Alex Otti come 2027 with APC government that will make sure that the Renewed Hope Agenda is spread to the grassroots in Abia State." When asked whether APC could defeat Governor Otti in 2027, Barrister Chikamnayo: "People who are saying that Alex Otti is not beatable are building castles in the air, Mr Alex Otti knows within his heart that he is completely using the machinery of media propaganda and manipulation to build an image that doesn't exist. "The reality in Abia state today is that civil servants are being repressed, the reality on ground in Abia state today is that there are phantom projects, that used to siphon billions of Abia money without accountability and transparency. "The reality in Abia state today is that Abians are yearning for liberation and that liberation must come to pass in 2027. Alex Otti will be roundly defeated in 2027 because Abia people are tired of his rule that has become a rule of tyranny and a complete rule of confusion."

*BPP rejects NPA's request Documents have been obtained, revealing that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is pushing to cancel legally awarded Cargo Survey (CS) contracts that were approved in 2019 for a 10-year duration. The contracts, which have already run for over five years, are due to expire in 2029. In a recent letter issued in September 2025, Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the NPA, gave a flimsy justification for the cancellation. He claimed that, “operational needs and efficiency” required the reprocurement of the services, despite no evidence that the firms had defaulted. Industry insiders say the CS companies have been responsible for improved revenue for the authority. They have digitised their operations, leading to better monitoring, quicker turnaround, and enhanced transparency at the ports. Documents show that the NPA neither invited the companies for any discussion, nor found them wanting in their contractual duties before moving to terminate the agreements. This latest push follows a recent failed attempt, when the NPA wrote to the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) seeking a “No Objection” waiver to scrap and reprocure cargo survey services through selective tendering. The BPP rejected the request, warning the NPA against serial abuse of restricted procurement and directing it to return to open competitive bidding in line with the Public Procurement Act, 2007. However, documents now show that after sustained pressure, the BPP eventually approved the use of restricted procurement on some CS contracts, raising questions about compromise and transparency. Contractors allege that the volte-face is part of a wider scheme to divert lucrative survey fees to favoured companies linked to cronies of the NPA leadership. Several contractors told Leaders.ng that they were blindsided by the cancellation move, having received no prior communication from the Authority. They also insist that unpaid invoices and procurement uncertainties are deliberate tactics to weaken existing firms. Legal and procurement experts warn that cancelling contracts midstream, without breach, would inevitably lead to litigation, costing the government more money. Segun Bakare, a maritime analyst, told Leaders.ng that “there is already a publication by the Attorney-General of the Federation cautioning MDAs against actions that could lead to litigation. Cancelling legally approved contracts falls squarely into that category.” Civil society groups and industry watchers are now calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to investigate what they describe as a fraudulent attempt to cancel and reallocate cargo survey contracts. Observers argue that this action risks undermining confidence in Nigeria’s procurement safeguards and could damage port efficiency at a time when revenue generation is critical. “The Office of the Auditor-General and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should prioritise an audit of the procurement cycle and payments for cargo survey services over the last three years. “Affected contractors should be given a public forum to present their case, and the NPA should publish a timeline and rationale for any contract cancellations or re-tendering,” Tolu Adekoya, a lawyer, stated. Meanwhile, there are fears that the NPA’s drive to cancel and reprocure cargo survey contracts, and to secure restricted tendering approvals, will expose an already fragile procurement environment where urgent operational narratives can be used to justify sidelining competition. “The BPP’s job is to close that door; whether it will stand firm under pressure is now the central test of Nigeria’s procurement safeguards,” Adekoya concluded.

The Coalition of All ADC Youth and Women Organizations in Adamawa State has called for greater inclusion of young people and women in the leadership and decision-making structures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that their participation should be treated as a right rather than a privilege. The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting of the coalition held in Yola on Saturday, October 4, 2025, and presented by its chairman, Hon. Mohammed All Scams. Highlighting that young people account for about 70% of Nigeria’s population while women make up 62%, the coalition stressed that the two groups remain the backbone of the country’s democratic processes and deserve proportional representation in political party structures. ADC as a political party should harness the raw potential embodied in young people and women by reserving at least 50% of elective positions within the party’s structures for them. This is key to fostering inclusion and democratic accountability,” the communiqué read. The coalition also condemned what it described as the “imposition of non-youths in youth positions,” citing the example of another political party in the state which, it claimed, appointed a 50-year-old man as youth leader. The position of youth leader should be specifically reserved for individuals aged 18 to 39, in line with Nigeria’s demographic realities. Anything short of that undermines the spirit of youth representation,” it added. On the micro-zoning of party offices, the coalition urged ADC stakeholders to respect zonal arrangements when selecting leaders. It specifically recommended Hon. Abdurrasheed Adamy Suleiman Khady for consideration as the state youth leader, should the position be zoned to Adamawa Central. Reaffirming its loyalty to the ADC at both national and zonal levels, the coalition pledged to abide by the directives of the party’s leadership while working to strengthen its position as a leading opposition party in Nigeria. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to promote inclusivity and democratic accountability within the ADC.

The Foundation’s team also visited Central County School, Omuma and Community Primary School, Omuma, Oru East LGA, where over 200 packs of back-to-school materials and learning resources were distributed to pupils amid chants of joy and excitement. The day’s activities culminated with a final stop at Migrant Farmers’ Children Primary School, Ozuh Omuma, Oru East LGA, where over 150 packs of materials were distributed. The head teacher, Mrs. Ojini Rachael, expressed deep appreciation, describing the intervention as the first of its kind this academic session. She thanked the foundation for finding her school worthy to benefit, pledged continued partnership, and prayed that God would ensure the Foundation and its partners never lack resources. She concluded by noting that with the burdens lifted from parents and the joy on the faces of the children, surely God will continue to bless the work of Mr. Onyeaji’s hands. Villagers who witnessed the distribution also expressed gratitude to the foundation and its partners, stressing that they would not forget this generosity and show of love in a hurry. This laudable initiative, aimed at alleviating the suffering of pupils and parents through educational support, targets 10,000 pupils across 586 primary schools in the 95 local government areas of Southeast Nigeria—Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu states. By providing school bags, exercise books, and other essential learning resources, the project highlights the value Collins Onyeaji Foundation places on quality basic education, particularly in making it accessible to children in rural communities.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and leader of opposition in Nigeria, has responded to a glowing speech delivered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the occasion of the country's 65th anniversary, saying "pot is not only empty but cracked — and the people remain hungry." Tinubu had earlier in the day, spoke of “turning the corner,” of laying foundations “in concrete and not on quicksand,” and of supposed victories in education, healthcare, the economy, and national security. Responding to the Independence Day presidential speech, Atiku, through a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications, Phrank Shuaibu, said: “The yam may be plentiful, but if the pot is empty, the stomach still rumbles.” According to Shuaibu, the president cited the multiplication of schools since 1960, but in many places, pupils still sit on bare floors and write in dust, while teachers abandon classrooms because their salaries cannot buy food. "He boasted of more hospitals, but our mothers and fathers still carry candles, syringes, and drugs into wards before treatment can begin. “A man who builds many huts without roofs has only built shade for goats.” On the economy, the statement said: "we were told of bold reforms. But Nigerians know the pain in their pockets. Food prices are higher than the rooftops, transport has swallowed incomes, and many families now eat less than one meal a day. If these are the “seeds” of reform, then the fruit is still bitter. 'When the roof is on fire, it is folly to declare the rain has quenched it.' On security, Atiku’s statement remarked that Tinubu saluted the courage of armed forces and declared victories over terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers, but "Nigerians still sleep with one eye open, and families still pay ransom as if it were the daily price of garri. "Villages continue to bury their dead. Most tragically, just this week, we lost Somtochukwu, a young female news anchor with Arise TV, killed in a robbery attack in the early hours of Monday. Her death is a painful reminder that no one — not even the voices that bring us the news — is safe in today’s Nigeria. "A farmer cannot boast the bush is cleared while weeds still choke his yam.” Continued the statement said: "We were told that billions have been disbursed to poor households. Nigerians ask simply: where? “If the yam was truly cooked, neighbours would perceive the aroma.” Across the land, poverty still walks naked and hunger knocks daily, yet the government sings of generosity that citizens cannot see or feel. "Our young people, the supposed “future,” are promised wings to fly. But many graduates hawk sachet water or ride okada to survive. “You cannot tell a child to dream big while you steal the mat he sleeps on.” Nigerian youth need real opportunities, not more applause lines. "Yes, 65 years is a long time. We have endured civil war, dictatorships, and crises. Nigerians are resilient — that much is true. But resilience must not be mistaken for endorsement. Our founding fathers dreamed of a land flowing with justice and opportunity. Today, the riverbed is dry for many, and only a privileged few fetch from the little water left. "A masquerade does not clap for itself; it is the crowd that cheers when the steps are sweet. Nigerians are not clapping, because the music they hear is hunger, insecurity, and despair. Statistics do not fill cooking pots, and PowerPoint slides do not light up homes." The former Vice President believed that as the country mark 65 years of independence," the true measure of progress is not in the number of universities or the percentage of coal mined. It is in whether Nigerians have food on their tables, whether our children are truly learning, whether our hospitals heal the sick, and whether people can sleep safely in their homes. "Independence anniversaries are moments of sober reflection, not self-praise. If truly this administration is laying foundations, then let those foundations be seen and felt in working schools, in affordable food, in reliable power, and in secured communities. Let mothers in the market and fathers on the farm testify — not just politicians at the podium. "Nigeria is 65 years old. But our leaders still serve promises as though they were meals. The yam is there, but the pot remains empty."

*Rallies students' support for President's re-election The Supreme Leader of the Natives, Hon. Olalekan Smart Edwards, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for their investment in education, saying the Nigerian students will repay the family with massive votes in 2027. The Natives, a conglomerate of all ethics, tribes and languages, specifically identified President Tinubu’s policy on the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the recent initiative of the First Lady to raise money through her birthday for the completion of the National Library. Speaking during the unveiling of the Iconic Magazine in his honour and presentation of award by the national leadership of the National Association of the Nigerian Students (NANS), Tuesday in Abuja, Hon. Edwards said if the past administrations have invested in education like the current government, so many Nigerians who dropped out or could not afford education would have gotten proper education. He said the President’s family have shown clearly that they are ready to invest in the lives of youths, of children, of families, and leave it as a legacy for all. According to him, Education, once given can not be taken away from you, hence the Tinubu’s family deserves commendation. He said: "It has now dawned on us. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not a joker. He is a man interested in our future. We fought so that education can be given to us. It's now given to us freely. "We see a country that is heading up to be one of the best countries in the world. I am a businessman. I travel around the world. I'm beginning to see light everywhere. "People are ready to do business with our country. People are ready to bring in their investments. "The oil sector is receiving a boom. Everything is turning the corner. The export numbers are different. We used to import. Now we are catching on. So agriculture, the president is involved. The environment, look at just what happened. "The Ogoni University. This man is serious. Look at what he has just done. The Ogoni report. Recognizing souls that have been damaged for years. I mean the president is serious. "So if we want to talk to the youth, what we'll be saying to them is light is now coming at the end of the tunnel. It is time to cooperate with the government, understand the policies of government. Those are the critical things. And see how it works for you and your organization." When asked for the implications of the gestures by the President’s family, Hon. Edwards said: "For that, you can already know there's no controversy, Bola Ahmed Tinubu should get the students vote massively in 2027. "The husband has opened up a policy and the policy is changing lives and giving students the opportunity to go to school. And the wife has decided to set up a library to give and add more to education. "That's why on behalf of our organization, we have decided that I donate six million Naira to the library project through the Nigerian students body. "There are people who understand the dynamics, hard decisions, hard times, and the economy is taking shape. What I'm saying to you is that all over the world, they say you can deny people education so that you can impoverish them. "If that is their only form of hope, then hope is being renewed. So I assure you, the time will come for us, when as Natives, we will give a vote of confidence on the Precedent and the parliament led by Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas." Speaking on behalf of the NANS leadership, it's National Secretary, Comrade Anzaku Shedrack Ovye, said the award was giving in recognition of the immense contribution of Hon. Edwards in empowering Nigerian youths across the country. He cited the recent empowerment of over 1,500 youths by the Natives to the tune of N250, 000 as start up capital in various trades and vocations.

*2,500 pieces of skin also handed to NESREA The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone B, Kaduna, has formally handed over a massive seizure of donkey bones and skins to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA). The Public Relations Officer of the Unit, Chief Superintendent of Customs Saidu Nuruddeen, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday September 30, 2025, in Kaduna. He noted that operatives intercepted 700 bags of donkey bones and 2,500 pieces of donkey skins in separate anti-smuggling operations. The items were handed over to Mr. Hene Emmanuel, NESREA’s Kaduna State Coordinator, during a brief ceremony. Speaking at the event, Comptroller Aminu Sule, described the seizure as a major step in safeguarding Nigeria’s biodiversity. He stressed that the illegal slaughter and trade of donkey parts pose grave ecological and socioeconomic threats to rural communities where donkeys serve as a key source of livelihood and transportation. “The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to enforcing environmental laws, protecting endangered species, and preventing Nigeria from being used as a transit point for illegal wildlife trade,” He said. Comptroller Sule stated. “This handover sends a clear warning to traffickers and their collaborators: Nigeria will not tolerate environmental crime.” According to him, the operation demonstrates the NCS’ resolve under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to deepen collaboration with partner agencies in line with his Three-Point Agenda of Collaboration, Consolidation, and Innovation. He expressed appreciation to officers of the Unit and partner agencies for their dedication to protecting the nation’s natural resources. The Comptroller also called on communities, transporters, warehouse owners, and traders to support the Service by reporting suspicious activities linked to wildlife trafficking.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Adamawa State chapter has condemned the alleged insensitive remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, following the recent terrorist attack on innocent people at Wagga Mongoro in Madagali LGA. . This was contained in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary All Progressives Congress (APC) Adamawa State, Hon. Mohammed Abdullahi, made available to our correspondent on Sunday. "Atiku once again proved that tragedy, for him, is not a moment of sober reflection but a stage for cheap politics. Instead of standing with the grieving persons, he rushed to issue a hollow statement riddled with lies and errors. "Unfortunately, upon hearing about the tragedy, Atiku hurriedly put up the sordid and fictitious statement laced with political innuendos. From the statement it is clear that Atiku is either ignorant of what really transpired or he was plainly mischievous or both. His statement got both the place and even number of casualties involved wrong. It was a comedy of errors," the statement said. It said that, " without mincing words, it must be stated that Atiku and the PDP government he once served laid the foundation for the insecurity we are battling today. "Surprisingly, Atiku, whose tragic failure at leadership contributed immensely to the current insecurity, is now shamelessly using the very monster he helped create to further his wicked and diabolic plan to destabilize the country. The PDP government in which he was the second in command squarely puts us into this quagmire. "Despite his renewed rhetorics Atiku once neglected Adamawa when he had the chance to change its fortunes, attracting no meaningful projects and abandoning even his own hometown of Jada, while concentrating on personal business ventures," APC alleged. The party said that when Boko Haram overran Adamawa communities, displaced families, and shut down livelihoods, Atiku was silent. "Now, when peace is gradually returning under APC leadership, he suddenly finds his voice – not to unite, but to exploit. "The APC government Atiku wants to discredit at all cost is doing a good job in cleaning the Augean stable. Competent, patriotic and committed hands are manning the situation now actively supporting our gallant armed forces and security agents. "This shameless politicization of grief is to say the least condescending and no leader worth his status should have embraced such scorched earth approach to make anybody or government look bad for the expediency of his personal political. Such approach is callous, reckless, and a stark reminder of Atiku’s disconnect from the people he claims to champion. "The APC stands firmly with the victims of Wagga Mongoro. We commiserate with the bereaved, pray for the injured, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that these degraded insurgents are finally defeated. "The people of Adamawa are not deceived. They know the difference between genuine solidarity and empty posturing. They know who stood with them in their darkest hours – and who is now cynically dancing on fresh graves for political gain".

The ancient Palace of the Lamido Adamawa was on Friday, caught up in a frenzy of celebration as thousands of friends, associates, and family members of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu converged to celebrate his investiture with the traditional title of Sardauna Adamawa. The historic event drew dignitaries from across the country, including Minister of Livestock, Idi Maiha, former Minister of FCT, Musa Bello and North East National Vice Chairman of APC, Mustapha Salihu amongst thousands others, underscoring Ribadu’s rising profile both in public service and within traditional institutions. Despite an early morning downpour, the palace and its environs were flooded with politicians, professionals, captains of industry, community leaders, youth groups, and women associations, all eager to express their solidarity with the Adamawa Emirate and their admiration for Ribadu. Speakers at the ceremony described the title of Sardauna as one of the most prestigious in the emirate, reserved for individuals whose lives exemplify leadership, integrity, and service to humanity. They said Ribadu’s record in public service, coupled with his immense contributions to peace and community development, made him a natural choice for the honour. Family members of the new Sardauna expressed profound appreciation to the Lamido Adamawa, His Royal Highness Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha for what they called a recognition of both Ribadu’s personal achievements and the legacy of the Ribadu family within the emirate. Delivering a heartfelt speech on behalf of the Ribadu family, Alhaji Bashir Sulaiman Ribadu recalled the long-standing ties between the Adamawa Emirate and the Ribadu lineage. “We the descendants of Alkali Atiku Ribadu, gathered here with friends and associates to register our gratitude for this title bestowed on our son, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. Though he could not attend personally due to the demands of his office, he asked us to convey his happiness and humility at this recognition. "This is not the first time our family has been honoured by this royal house. From the days of Lamido Zubairu, when our forefather Sarki Turawa was honoured, to Lamido Aliyu Mustapha’s conferment of the title of Dangaladima on Ambassador Ahmadu Ribadu, our ties have remained strong. Today’s conferment on Nuhu Ribadu is another testament to this enduring relationship," he said. Bashir noted that the title was not just a personal honour but the highest recognition Ribadu had received at home, especially given his current role as National Security Adviser (NSA), where he has contributed significantly to stabilizing security in Nigeria. Representing the Lamido, the Secretary of the Adamawa Emirate Council, Alhaji Umar Yahaya, said the choice of Ribadu was deliberate and symbolic. “The task of the NSA is daunting, involving relentless battles against terrorism and insecurity. Yet Ribadu has distinguished himself as a dogged fighter, a pacesetter, and a patriotic son of Adamawa. This honour is not just for him but for his entire family, and we pray Allah strengthens him in his responsibilities,” he stated.

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, told the governor that he led the high level delegation from the university to condole with him and the good people of Katsina State over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The Vice-Chancellor also commiserated with the governor personally over the unfortunate road accident he recently suffered in the course of official duty. Prof Ahmed pointed out that the news of the governor's recovery brought relief and excitement to ABU staff and students who remained proud of his resilience and devotion to duty. The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to the governor for granting them audience despite his very tight schedule. The ABU delegation comprised the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research and Innovation, Prof Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi; the Registrar, Rabiu Samaila; and the Dean of Students, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu. Others were the Director, Directorate of Advancement and International Education, Prof Sani Abba Aliyu; and former Chief Medical Director, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital and pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Lokoja, Prof Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi. The Lapai Town Hall came alive on Wednesday 25th September, 2025 as diverse groups of leaders, institutions, and community members gathered to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Peace, a global observance dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace. The event, organized by the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPF Nigeria), drew prominent personalities from across Niger State, including lecturers from IBB University Lapai, religious leaders, traditional rulers, school teachers and students, security agencies, and members of the public. Rev. John John Joseph Hayab, the Country Director of GPF Nigeria who was represented by Rimpyen Danjuma Yohana, the organization’s Youth and Education Development Officer, delivered a keynote address affirming the foundation’s commitment to building bridges across divides and empowering young people and women as drivers of peace. In his remarks, the GPF Nigeria representative emphasized the importance of strengthening community bonds through education, interfaith dialogue, and active youth engagement. He noted that peace cannot be left to governments alone but requires collaboration among religious institutions, academia, traditional rulers, and everyday citizens. Rev. Hayab’s message delivered by his representative emphasized that “at the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, we believe that sustainable peace is built on shared values and respect for human dignity.” He posited that understanding and embracing the foundation’s “One Family Under God.” Vision is key to actualizing a more peaceful society and world. This vision he said, “calls us to rise above ethnic, religious, or political differences and to work together for the common good.” Buttressing the importance of the annual commemoration, Rev. Hayab observed that “peace is too important to have only a single day earmarked for it because peace is what we need every day, so everyday should be a day of peace for us.” According to Rev. Hayab, “the theme for this year is quite apt and a timely call to action. It reminds us that peace cannot be postponed, negotiated indefinitely, or left in the hands of a few leaders, groups or individuals. It is an urgent responsibility that requires collective action today—from governments, civil society, religious institutions, traditional authorities, schools, families and indeed, every individual.” Speaking further, Rev. Hayab asserted that Nigeria, like many nations, faces challenges that test our unity—whether violent extremism, intercommunal conflict, economic inequality, or mistrust between groups. But the message of the day according to him, is clear: “we cannot wait for peace to arrive tomorrow—we must act now”. He added that in Niger State, with its rich diversity, we see both the challenges and opportunities of peacebuilding. Lapai, he said, stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when communities choose cooperation over conflict. He therefore expressed hope that the gathering inspires everyone present to act now and spread the message that peace is possible. Presenting a paper at the event, former H.O.D, Biological Science and Head, Centre for Gender Affairs, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai, Professor Naomi John Dadi remarked that peace is not an abstract concept; it begins with each of us as individuals. "Before we can talk about building peace in our communities or in our nation, we must first be at peace with ourselves. Inner peace, she said, allows us to think clearly, to make just decisions, and to relate with others in fairness and respect. "From the self, peace extends to our families, and from our families, to our neighbors, communities, and ultimately our nation.” She said. While underscoring the place of gender equality in shaping peace and achieving sustainable peace and development, Prof. Naomi emphasized that no community can truly achieve peace if half of its population is excluded from decision-making or denied opportunities to contribute. The professor submitted that “when women and girls are given equal opportunities to contribute their ideas, skills, and leadership, the entire society benefits because women are nurturers and peacemakers in the home, but they are also community leaders, educators, and professionals who can strengthen peacebuilding efforts at every level. ”Professor Naomi concluded that peace is everyone’s responsibility, with every member of society having a role to play, thus urging participants to act now-whether by rejecting violence, practicing tolerance, promoting justice, or educating the next generation to respect one another. Considering that Local Government Elections in Niger State are scheduled to hold in November 2025, the event was also used to raise awareness on the impact of peaceful elections to the overall peace of the society. Hon Allahi Abubakar Taka Umar, the Executive Director of Operations, Niger State Emergency Management Agency pointed out that local government election is an important feature of democracy but described as unfortunate how election times are when tensions rise, when differences are magnified, and when violence often erupts. While reminding participants of the devasting consequences of electoral violence which aside setting society backwards, also involves lost of lives and properties, Hon. Abubakar called for peaceful conduct by the electorate, candidates as well as political parties involved in the election. He also emphasized the need for responsible media engagement, Early Warning Systems and more stakeholders’ engagement. The event clearly depicted a Collective Commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence in the community as religious leaders joined voices, calling on citizens to embrace tolerance and reject hate-driven narratives. Traditional rulers stressed the need for stronger cultural values that prioritize mutual respect, fairness, and dialogue in resolving disputes. Security agencies pledged continued partnership with civil society, schools, and faith communities to foster peaceful coexistence. Schoolchildren and students enlivened the programme with poems and songs themed around unity and peaceful coexistence. Their performances served as powerful reminders that the future of peacebuilding lies in the hands of the younger generation.

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Thursday, called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently suspend Nyesom Wike as minister of FCT and cause investigation to be carried out on his US property scandal. Frank who made this assertion in a statement in Abuja, called on the President to break his silence on the scandal and demonstrate the same commitment to accountability like the way he acted swiftly and unequivocally in suspending former cabinet minister Betta Edu over corruption charges far less serious than those now confronting Minister Wike. According to media reports, Wike allegedly acquired property in Florida, and to hide the assets, he allegedly registered them under his wife’s name, Justice Eberechi Wike, and children, Joaquin, Jazmyne, and Jordan. According to the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle, President Tinubu's silence in the face of overwhelming evidence of the houses in public domain is troubling. “With detailed reports from credible sources such as People's Gazette and Sahara Reporters, and with glaring evidence ignored by anti-corruption agencies like EFCC and ICPC, it sends a dangerous message that some officials are untouchable,” he lamented. He urged the President to be aware that impunity and arrogance of government officials like Wike weakens citizens trust in governance and contribute to revolts like the Nepal uprising. He commended Omoyele Sowore of Sahara Reporters and the Publishers of People’s Gazette for their courage in exposing corruption in the country, irrespective of serving government officials involved. He warned Tinubu not to make any official in his cabinet feel as if they are untouchable or they are God. He stated that the Presidency represents the integrity of Nigeria and must uphold the principle that no one is above the law, regardless of political alliances. Frank added: “The reasons behind this continued inaction in the case are of Wike appear tied to the political calculations surrounding the 2027 presidential elections. “However, allowing political ambition to shield corruption will irreparably harm Nigeria’s reputation internationally. “The world is watching, and this selective justice undermines investor confidence and portrays Nigeria as a nation unable or unwilling to fight corruption—even within its highest offices. “Furthermore, even when crises erupted in Rivers State, President Tinubu suspended only Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the House of Assembly members while leaving the Minister of FCT, Wike, untouched. “This inconsistency fuels suspicions of favoritism and political shielding. Nigerians and the international community deserve to know why the President appears reluctant to confront alleged corruption linked to a close political ally. “Selective enforcement of the law erodes national pride and makes Nigeria a laughing stock among peer nations, many of whom prosecute corruption allegations without hesitation. “We urge President Tinubu to immediately suspend and commission an independent investigation into Minister Wike, just as was done with Betta Edu. “The President should protect the dignity of Nigeria and the trust of its citizens by rejecting selective justice and political expediency. The integrity of Nigeria’s governance and its image on the global stage depend on it.”

A support group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Abia Interest Association (A.B.I.A) has petitioned governments of United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), France, among others to place a visa restriction on Abia state governor Alex Otti, until his government show proof of N54 billion spent for the renovation of public schools in the state. Other countries and international bodies petitioned include: Germany, China, Australia, Canada, Britain Switzerland, The European Union and Africa Union. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Convener of Abia Best Interest Association, Barr. Eze Chikamnayo, said the governor and his officials instead of providing an empirical evidence of the 51 smart schools for which 54 Billion Naira was spent from the state coffers in the last quarter of 2024, resorted to another diversionary tactics of misleading the unsuspecting public to believe that ASUBEB classroom projects being executed with Federal Government counterpart funding are the same with the smart schools projects. According to Chikamnayo, the failure or refusal to publish the list, location, contractors and pictures of the purported Smart Public School Projects for which over N78 Billion Naira has now been spent between the 2nd quarter of 2023 and third quarter of 2025 is a clear indication of systemic corruption, impunity, lack of transparency and accountability in Governance. The APC group had earlier petitioned some anti-corruption agencies to investigate and unravel the controversy. The group said latest fact finding visits to many public schools in Abia state still indicated that over 95 percent of them remain in a state of severe neglect— with dilapidated buildings, unfenced compounds, together with absence of learning and teaching equipment. "These troubling realities stand in stark contrast to the said expenditure recorded in the State Government Budget Performance Reports which, as we earlier observed is different from other financial inflows recorded under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and various Federal Intervention Programs. "We are, therefore, compelled to take the following additional measures: 1.Write the Government of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, Germany China, Australia, Canada, Britain Switzerland, The European Union and Africa Union to deny Mr Alex Otti Visa to the United States of America and the aforementioned countries in order to halt his frequent travels to the United States to enable him address the serious questions regarding the whereabouts of these funds and the lack of transparency and accountability in his government. "Continue to engage with the Nigerian anti-corruption bodies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), National Assembly, Federal Ministry of Finance, World Bank, Transparency International and other relevant institutions. "Already we have writing official letter to the above bodies and other international organization that specialized in basic Education demanding urgent intervention to rescue the State from any attempt by Mr Alex Otti from using Education as a conduit pipe for miss appropriation of Public Funds." The group also accused of the Labour Party government of claiming federal roads being done by the state for reimbursement as his projects. "This serious issue of accountability and transparency cannot be wished away because corruption in the education sector robs future generations of their dignity, opportunities, and rights. "This sordid situation also undermines and violates the rights of Abia children to quality education as guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights instruments. Therefore, the Governor of Abia State, Mr Alex Otti and His Government cannot be allowed to sweep it under the carpet "It is our hope that you will join us in our tireless work in promoting transparency and fighting corruption by lending your voice, platform and influence to ensure that justice is served and accountability is enforced in the Governance of Abia State."

A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has strongly condemned the assassination of American conservative activist, Charlie Kirk, describing it as a painful and irreparable loss to the global youth movement and the democratic community at large. In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Frank said: “Charlie Kirk’s assassination is a big loss to this generation - not just to the United States of America, but to young people all over the world. At only 31, he had already begun to shape political discourse beyond America’s borders. “Kirk was a rising star, a passionate patriot, and a man whose love for God, country, and humanity was evident in everything he stood for.” Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, called on Governor Spencer Cox of Utah and the United States Government to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident. "It is important that justice is served swiftly and decisively, not only to bring closure to his family and supporters, but also to send a strong message that such cowardly acts of violence have no place in any democratic society. “I commend both the U.S. Government and the Government of the State of Utah for the progress made so far in the investigations and for keeping the public duly informed," he said. Frank further described Kirk as a role model whose life embodied the ideals of democracy. "Charlie Kirk represented the truth that young people are indeed the future of politics and governance. While many may not have agreed with all his political opinions, there is no doubt that he lived for what he believed in - freedom of speech, freedom of association, and the pursuit of democratic ideals. His life and work will remain a source of inspiration to generations of young leaders worldwide," he added. Expressing his deepest condolences, Frank said, "I commiserate with the Kirk family, his followers, and supporters both in the United States and across the world. I also extend my heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the United States and to President Donald Trump. “May Charlie Kirk’s gentle soul rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen." He concluded with a call for unity and reflection: “Let Charlie Kirk’s life remind us all that no matter our political differences, violence and the taking of human life remain cowardly acts that run contrary to the ideals of democracy and humanity. “May his teachings and his example continue to inspire a world where dialogue, freedom, and respect for differing opinions thrive."

*Warns APC against attacking, intimidating, harassing opposition leaders Comrade Timi Frank, an activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement vital reforms ahead of the 2027 elections to ensure free, fair, and credible polls. Frank in statement on Sunday in Abuja, emphasised that both INEC, judiciary and security agencies, as well as other democratic institutions in the country, have critical roles in upholding the rule of law and preventing unrest similar to recent Nepal protests. He also urged the ruling All Progressives Congress to stop attacking, intimidating and harassing opposition leaders in the country. Recall that some opposition leaders: Mallam Nasir El-rufai in Kaduna, former AGF Abubakar Malami in Kebbi and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour in Lagos, were attacked recently. While commending INEC’s recognition of the David Mark-led African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership, Timi Frank described the development as a positive step toward electoral inclusiveness and credibility. He said: “This bold and positive action should not stand alone. As the nation looks ahead to the 2027 general elections, INEC must replicate this same spirit of independence and courage in the overall conduct of the polls. “Now that the new leadership of the ADC has been recognised by INEC, we urge Nigerians to repose confidence in and support it as the party that would change Nigeria for the better and ensure freedom and prosperity for all. We also urge Nigerians to be prepared to vote and defend their votes in 2027.” Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, warned that despite this progress, Nigerians remain skeptical of INEC’s neutrality due to contrived irregularities in the 2023 elections that favoured the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He assured INEC that anytime they act rightly, like they have done in recognising the David Mark-led leadership of the ADC and their pre-qualification of 14 associations for registration as political parties, he would commend them. He declared, however, that whenever they act contrary to their mandate as an umpire like their observable compromised stance on the recent by-elections, he would criticise them. He said: “The by-elections recently conducted across the country showed avoidable lapses deliberately orchestrated by INEC to further their partisan interests - one reason Nigerians distrusts them because they've not been doing the right thing. He stressed: "Democracy thrives when arbiters remain neutral, courageous, and consistent in the face of political pressure. Nigeria’s democratic future and socio-economic development depends on bold decisions such as this.” To restore trust, Frank demanded that the commission must push the National Assembly for constitutional and electoral reforms, including electronic transmission of results, and purge partisan officials aligned with the APC. He also called for the selection of a new INEC chairman with proven integrity now that the tenure of Mahmood Yakubu is about to elapse. Highlighting the essential role of security agencies, Frank warned: “Security agencies must be unbiased and stop their usual role in rigging elections for the ruling party. “They must protect voters and prevent political violence. Failure to do so risks pushing Nigeria into a situation worse than Nepal’s recent unrest, given our challenges with poverty and tyranny.” On voter engagement, he urged Nigerians to register and defend their votes but cautioned that low turnout reflects widespread lack of confidence in INEC’s impartiality. Frank also challenged the judiciary to uphold justice without bias, serving as a true custodian of democracy rather than an extension of ruling party interests. “Justice must not only be done but be seen to have been done. We will hold accountable any judge compromised by partisan influence. “Let the Nigeria judiciary, especially the justices and judges to know that Nigerians will continue to shine searchlights on them since most of the electoral disputes often end up in their dockets.” He concluded by warning that without urgent reforms and ethical leadership by electoral and security institutions, Nigeria faces heightened risk of violence and political instability akin to the ENDSARS and Nepal upheaval, undermining the nation’s democratic gains. He called on President Donald Trump and other members of the international community to help pressurise the Nigerian government, especially INEC and the National Assembly to prioritise electoral reforms without which there cannot be free and fair elections in 2027. . He urged the U.S. to help impose stiffer sanctions on judges, justices and INEC officials that may compromise the electoral process, saying, “We believe and support Donald Trump’s position on enthroning true democracy across Africa.”

A Coalition of Civil Society for Energy Reform (CCSER) has warned against the return of the era of fuel scarcity that hindered the country’s socioeconomic development, describing the recent media attacks on Mr. Bayo Ojulari-led Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). Convener of the group, Mallam Awaal Dairu, in a statement Wednesday in Abuja, said under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision and Mr. Ojulari’s capable leadership, they are confident that the NNPCL can take its rightful place as a symbol of national pride and global competitiveness. According to the Coalition, the orchestrated smear campaign, driven by elements of the entrenched cabal, is a desperate attempt to derail reforms at NNPCL and distract from the tangible progress being made under Mr. Ojulari’s leadership. "It is a dangerous plot not only against an individual but against the stability of Nigeria’s energy sector and the credibility of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR." The Coalition urged President Tinubu to continue providing unwavering support for Mr. Ojulari, whose leadership has already begun to restore confidence in NNPCL as a national institution that can deliver value to Nigerians and stand tall in the global energy sector. They equally called on all Nigerians to expose the falsehoods being spread and rally behind reforms that prioritise national interest over selfish, cabal-driven agendas, adding that the fight against corruption and inefficiency will not be easy, but it is necessary for the future of our nation. They further called on President Tinubu not to be swayed by detractors or manipulated into taking any action that would undermine the steady reforms taking place at NNPC, noting that yielding to such antics would embolden corrupt actors, jeopardise investor trust, and roll back the progress being achieved. “Gone are the days of favouritism and ‘briefcase portfolio companies’ being handed contracts. Under Mr. Ojulari, due process is strictly followed, and only viable, competent contractors with proven capacity are shortlisted for projects. This fair and merit-based approach has angered vested interests who can no longer benefit from patronage. “His leadership continues to reassure both local and international investors, particularly International Oil Companies (IOCs), that Nigeria is serious about creating a stable, transparent, and investment-friendly energy sector. “By all measurable standards, Mr. Ojulari remains one of the best-performing appointees in this administration, with reforms that align directly with the President’s vision for economic transformation.”

The 'Lunch with the Vice-Chancellor Programme' introduced by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), was essentially to create a platform that would nurture the next generation of leaders for Nigeria. A statement made available on Tuesday, by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, said at the maiden edition of the programme that the initiative was to produce leaders who would embody knowledge, character, and a deep sense of responsibility. Launching the programme at Yusufu Bala Usman Hall, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Ahmed urged students to seize the moment, to learn, to question, and to be inspired. He stressed that the future of Nigeria rested in their hands and that the university was determined to help them carry that responsibility with courage and vision. Ahmed said the programme aligned closely with the vision of ABU's founding father, the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto. He also said the university was established not only as a centre of learning but also as a training ground for leaders with empathy, a global outlook, and a deep consciousness of their obligations to Nigeria. "It is our hope that the beneficiaries of this forum, intended to be held twice yearly, will rise to that noble expectation", he further said. He explained that the event was also an opportunity to have an open and sincere interaction with a select group of students to build stronger relationships that would carry forward the spirit of ABU family. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the keynote address speaker, Muhtar Bakare, Chairman of Alternative Bank, whose story was one of vision, hard work, and resilience. Prof Ahmed also expressed the university's gratitude to Ahmed Zakari and Company for their generous sponsorship of the programme. Prof Ahmed described the chartered accountants company as one of the most successful and fastest-growing accounting firms in Nigeria. He said what made the firm's story even more inspiring for ABU was that the company was wholly owned by some of the institution's brightest alumni. In a keynote address, the Chairman Alternative Bank, Muhtar Bakare, shared practical life lessons and experiences of failures that he used as motivation to do better. Bakare said young students were sitting on the necks of giants and had opportunities that others could only dream of with their access to the internet, artificial intelligence, and willing mentors. The banker and publisher encouraged students to let their curiosity grow to allow interdisciplinary learning which would help shape their visions as leaders of tomorrow. In his remarks, Chairman of the Occasion, Amb Shuaibu Ahmed, an alumnus of ABU and a Senior Partner at Ahmed Zakariyya and Co, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for the initiative. Ahmed described the programme as a sign of humility and empathy to interact with the students who were the future. He congratulated the students for being selected to interact with experts and enjoined them to make the best use of the knowledge they would gain from the experience. In a paper presentation, Prof Sulaiman A. Karwai of the Department of Finance highlighted the need for vision, monitoring and evaluation in order to make a positive impact in any role they would find themselves in. Prof Karwai emphasized that good leaders were more interested in developing and empowering their people than their personal lives. He cited exemplary leaders like the Sardauna of Sokoto who not only impacted his people but also inspired them to greatness. Prof Karwai called on the students to have vision, empathy, and emotional intelligence to help them excel as world class leaders.

A Pro-democracy group, Coalition For Good Governance (CGG) has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the general public to ignore the recent smear campaign against Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Bayo Ojulari. The good governance group said it has studied the campaign and discovered that "It is not about facts or performance. It is about vested interests seeking to reclaim the corridors of unchecked power and patronage within the oil and gas sector." In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, signed by its national coordinator, Comrade Olaniyi Olawale, said the path of progress, accountability, and modernization being championed by Mr. Bayo Ojulari must not be derailed by fabricated conspiracies or cabal-driven propaganda. It urged President Tinubu to continue to lend his strategic patience and unwavering support to Mr. Ojulari as he carries out the difficult but necessary task of repositioning the NNPC into a globally competitive, transparent, and investor-friendly national oil company. The statement added that enemies of reform may roar loudly, but truth, performance, and service to nation will ultimately prevail. "By targeting Mr. Ojulari with fabrications, half-truths, and manufactured associations, these actors seek to undermine his reforms and derail the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. "Since assuming office, Mr. Ojulari has demonstrated visionary and results-oriented leadership in line with the President’s energy sector reform blueprint. Among his achievements are: "Operational Repositioning: Instituting efficiency measures to streamline NNPC operations, reduce leakages, and improve accountability. "Transparency & Corporate Governance: Enforcing global best practices in financial reporting and regulatory compliance. "Investor Confidence: Reassuring both local and international investors, including the IOCs, of Nigeria’s seriousness in repositioning its energy sector for growth and sustainability. " Alignment with Renewed Hope Agenda: Driving policies that directly complement President Tinubu’s national development and economic diversification vision. "By every measurable indicator, Mr. Ojulari remains one of the best-performing appointments in this administration — a professional committed to service delivery, not politics." While warning against the false narrative, the group said: "The falsehoods being circulated, ranging from alleged political collusion to frivolous retreats and baseless business ties are nothing but tools of blackmail. They are intended to pressure the Presidency into making hasty, ill-advised decisions that would embolden corrupt actors and reverse hard-earned progress. "We therefore urge Mr. President not to be cowed by these naysayers, detractors, and accomplices of the old order who are desperate to hold on to their corrupt grip over the NNPC. Yielding to such antics would not only embolden mediocrity but also risk eroding investor trust, particularly among foreign investors and International Oil Companies (IOCs) who closely monitor Nigeria’s energy governance landscape. "Investor confidence could wane, slowing capital inflows into vital projects. "Nigeria’s image as a serious player in the global energy market could be damaged. "The credibility of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda would be unfairly questioned on the altar of blackmail."

*Vows to deepen trade facilitation, make Seme Border Nigeria’s pride The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, has witnessed a seamless change of leadership as Comptroller Wale Adenuga formally took over the mantle of leadership of the Command yesterday at the ECOWAS Joint Border Post, Seme-Krake Border Post. According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer Seme Area Command, Chief Superintendent of Customs Isah Sulaiman, the handing over ceremony brought together senior officials from sister security agencies, representatives of trade and transport stakeholders, community leaders and members of the Fourth Estate. In his inaugural address, Comptroller Wale Adenuga praised the outgoing CAC for his achievements and pledged to consolidate on them. He outlined his vision for the Command, placing trade facilitation at the heart of his leadership. "Trade facilitation is my keyword," he stated. “When stakeholders make proper declarations, their consignments will leave Customs control within the shortest possible time. The more we facilitate trade, the more revenue we generate and the less smuggling we have,” he added. Adenuga pledged to collaborate closely with sister agencies, including the DSS, Nigeria Police, Immigration, NDLEA, Nigerian Military, NAFDAC and others to reduce crime and create a conducive environment for business to thrive. He also committed to maintaining open communications with the traditional rulers, the youth of Badagry and the media and assured all that "his doors remain open". He promised to lead from the front and ensure officers remain disciplined and committed to their responsibility and not to compromise their duties. Acknowledging the leadership of the CGC, who is also the President of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council and the first Nigerian to hold the role, Comptroller Adenuga stressed the need to make the CGC proud through exemplary performance. In his farewell remarks, ACG Oramalugo described the day as one of “mixed emotions” joy at God’s faithfulness and his promotion, but nostalgia for the bonds built during his time in Seme. He highlighted key achievements under his leadership, including sustained suppression of smuggling with significant seizures of prohibited goods. Improved revenue collection and enhanced trade facilitation to ease legitimate business while safeguarding national security, as well as fostering inter-agency cooperation and community engagement, among others. Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, was delighted to see participants, both in person and virtually, ready to discuss the theme of the workshop. Represented by the Coordinator, Gender Policy Unit, Prof Rahanatu Lawal, the Vice-Chancellor said ABU had always been at the forefront of innovation and progress. Prof Ahmed also said it was a source of great pride to see the institution taking the lead in this critical area. The event, according to him, was more than just a meeting. It was a significant step towards a more equitable future, he said. The rise of Artificial Intelligence, he further said, was reshaping the world at an incredible pace, saying it was vital that women were not only passive observers but also active leaders and innovators in this space. Prof Ahmed said by promoting gender inclusion, the university was not just doing what was right, it was also building a stronger, more creative, and more effective AI ecosystem. In an address of welcome, Dr Nafisa Shehu Usman explained that 'Women Leading Change in Africa' was an initiative of the UNESCO-ICHE's IIOE implemented in Nigeria through the Nigeria National Centre in ABU. Dr Nafisa, a staff of the Department of Computer Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, said the aim was to ensure that women in higher education were not just users of digital tools but also leaders in the era of artificial intelligence. According to her, between now and 2027, IIOE planned to reach at least 4,500 participants, with no fewer than 1,500 women directly engaged in training, micro-certifications, and leadership pathways in AI. She stressed that for 2025 alone, their target was 1,500, with at least 500 women actively engaged. Nafisa emphasised that the project was more than a programme, as it was a movement towards building an education system, where innovation was inclusive, policies were relevant and no one was left behind. In a paper presentation, titled 'Digital Skills for the Next Generation of Women Leaders in Nigerian Higher Education', the Chief Executive Officer and Founder, GMIND AI, Dr Success Ojo, maintained that the AI and data analysis were the key digital skills for future leaders. Dr Ojo said curriculum update to include digital literacy and AI was one of their success stories. In another presentation titled 'Reimagining Teaching and Learning Through AI: What It Means for Women in Academia', Dr Yusuf Ibrahim of the Department of Computer Engineering argued that early decision shaped equity outcomes. Dr Yusuf said Nigeria was drafting a National AI strategy to steer inclusive and ethical adoption at scale. On her part, the founder, TechTank Labs, Surayya Ahmad, called on the empowerment and educating of women on how to use modern technology in order to bridge the digital divide in different communities. Surayya said less than 40 percent of women in northern Nigeria used smart phones. In a goodwill message, the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof Maryam Aminu, noted that as a woman in leadership and a firm believer in the transformative power of education, she recognised that the future of higher education rested on their ability to embrace innovation, inclusivity and technology. Prof Maryam also said AI was no longer just a tool of the future, as it was also today's reality, shaping research, teaching, governance and professional development. She congratulated the organisers and wished them well. In another goodwill message, the Director General, National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), Engineer Kabiru Muazu, stated that the theme of the workshop was relevant as the world continued to embrace AI as a driver of innovation, research and development. Represented by the Head, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit of the Institute, Mrs. Florence O. Paul, the Director General said gender inclusion was not just a matter of equity, it was also a necessity for harnessing the full potential of AI to address societal challenges. Engr Muazu said empowering women to take their rightful place in AI leadership and policy would enrich perspectives, expand opportunities and strengthen the foundation for sustainable growth in science, technology, and innovation. Demonstrating the use of the IIOE platform, Dr Habiba Atta of the Department of Microbiology, encouraged women to embrace technology and register on the platform. Dr Atta said the COVID-19 pandemic opened her eyes to different digital tools. In a vote of thanks, the Head, Department of Computer Engineering, Dr Basira Yahaya, thanked all participants for attending the workshop. Dr Basira charged the participants to join IIOE's forthcoming lecture series from now to December 2026. A total of 926 participants attended the sensitisation workshop. The number is made up of 779 virtual and 147 physical. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has assured that he would always be willing to support the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). He gave the assurance, when the SWAN President, Isaiah Kemje Benjamin led national executive of the association to present a membership card of the association to the Speaker at his office, within the premises of the Delta State House of Assembly, Asaba on Tuesday September 2, 2025. "I'll close the ranks with you, I'll continue to give my support and for the wishes, you know I always pray to grow higher from where I am and I know that God is the one that gives power he's the only one that elevates people if he says that this is the direction I'm going, I'll say thank you God and I want to say that thank you Mr President for the wishes and I know that God will grant some of your wishes God," he said. The Speaker who was excited about the associate membership card presented to him, explained that he is a lover of sports, and the legislative arm of the Delta State Government is vibrant in participating in sporting activities. "When I was making that statement that I am already a member of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, last year, I was just only joking. I never knew that it would be this serious that you would one day come and adopt me as your member. I'm so proud that I am honored in this way and also giving me an award of excellence, I must say that I'm grateful I'm so so grateful and I will not take these for granted. "I am a sports person myself, I encourage my colleagues to be involved in sporting activities. For the past two years, we've been engaging ourselves in football activities and all of that. "Unfortunately this year, we lost to the executive arm so as a sports writer associate member of the sports writers association, let me assure you that i'll continue to work closely with all of you," he said. The Delta Speaker added, "I want to say that I am so, so elated for this August visit in the month of September. I must say that I am grateful, indeed, very, very grateful. I want to thank you for thanking me for that which I have done last year by attending your national convention here in Asaba. "I never did it with the intention of you coming back to thank me. I did it out of free will, out of my free volition, thinking that I'm just helping in one way or the other. So I'm so grateful. "I'm so grateful that you came back, just like one of those ten lepers. The book of Luke that came to thank the Lord Jesus. I want to thank you for coming to thank me. "And for the honour done me, I am so, so grateful," he said. Speaking earlier, SWAN President commended the Speaker for his support to sports in the state and by extension Nigeria He said that with the support of all stakeholders, Delta State remains the number one sports sub national not only in Nigeria, but on the continent. "Let me begin by sincerely thanking the Speaker for accepting to receive us, this we are not taking for granted and we are here basically for three things because of want of time I'll try to cut my speech very short so that we don't keep the Speaker longer than necessary. "First and foremost, we are here to thank the Honourable Speaker for taking his time last year when we came for similar function as this to attend our national convention. "Normally when we attend any festival be it National Sports Festival or Youth Games, we hold national convention where we take an assessment of activities that played out during the games of the festival, make recommendation to policymakers to see how it gets better and Mr. Speaker graciously you attended that national convention and did us a lot of honour by making presentations of award to distinguished personalities and this we are not taking for granted. "Mr. Speaker, we are thankful for that honour that you did to us last year we didn't just come to do just thank you, you know last time you told us that you are our member how we applauded it and we agreed today we officially need to make you an associate member we're going to present you our ID card as an associate member of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria and this will be renewable every year by the special grace of God. "Aside that, we're also going to honour you like I said, honour should be given to whom honour is due. We have found you worthy of receiving the honour from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria and that is one singular thing we are also going to do again today to tell Mr. Speaker you are doing well, continue the good job and SWAN's award is not just given for giving sake, we take time to assess the awardee to be sure that he or she really merits such award and by His grace, we can confirm beyond his name with our support that you merit the award that will be presented to you today," he said. SWAN President stressed, " Like I said Mr Speaker, thank you for the job you are doing and this is an award of excellence that is going to be presented on behalf of the entire Sports Writers Association of Nigeria". |
*Challenges Peter Obi’s LP on transparency A pro-All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, known as Abia Best Interest Association (ABIA) has dragged the state Governor Alex Otti to various anti-corruption organizations, locally and international, to investigate the controversial N54 billions meant for school renovation in the state. Aside the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the APC group also wrote the National Assembly, Federal Ministry of Finance, World Bank, Transparency International and the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), among others. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, an APC chieftain and Convener of the group, Eze Chikamnayo, Esq., said the failure or refusal to publish the list, location, contractors and pictures of the purported 51 public school projects for which over 54 billion naira has been spent between the first and fourth quarter of 2024 by Alex Otti's administration is indicative of systemic corruption, impunity, lack of transparency and accountability in governance. According to him, it is alarming that despite such huge allocations and disbursements, and with almost two years gone, there is no single new smart school project anywhere in Abia state as widely reported by the Government. "Furthermore, our fact finding visits to many public schools in Abia State indicate that over 95 percent of them remain in a state of severe neglect— with dilapidated buildings, unfenced compounds, together with absence of learning and teaching equipment. "These troubling realities stand in stark contrast to the said expenditure recorded in the State Government Budget Performance Report which is different from other financial inflows recorded under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and various Federal Intervention Programs." While calling on all anti-graft agencies and groups, Civil Society Organizations and leaders of thoughts to demand accountability from Alex Otti's administration, the group said: "Already, we have writing official letters to the above bodies and other international organizations that specialized in basic Education, demanding urgent intervention to rescue the State from any attempt by Mr Alex Otti from using Education as a conduit pipe for misappropriation of public funds. "In the interest of Abia State, Abia children and generations yet unborn, we have dragged the state government, under Alex Otti-led administration to all relevant anti-corruption agencies, locally and internationally. "We have also written to the National Assembly, UNESCO, World Bank, Federal Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Education, and indeed watchdogs like Transparency International, Amnesty International and others for urgent intervention and sanctions where necessary. "It is our hope that you will join us in our tireless work in promoting transparency and fighting corruption by lending your voice, Platform and influence to ensure that justice is served and accountability is enforced in the Governance of Abia state." For asking for the pictures, names and locations of the renovated schools in Abia state, Barrister Chikamnayo said the governor, during his last press briefing, called him names and threatened his life and the group, vowing not to be intimidated in the course of demanding for accountability. The APC group challenged 2023 presidential candidates of Labour Party, Peter Obi to, immediately, stop all the noises making across the country about transparency and accountability. "It means that Labor Party is not a party to be trusted with the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So we are saying that Mr. Alex Otti must come clean and we are challenging Mr. Peter Obi to stop, immediately, all the noises making across this country about transparency and accountability because charity ought to begin at home. "Let Mr. Peter Obi take Mr. Alex Ottii into one small room and give him sufficient tutelage and lecture on transparency and accountability."

The Yoruba Youth Council (YYC), an umbrella organisation of Yoruba youths nationwide, has cautioned against anything likely to disrupt the incoming governorship election in Osun State, or discredit the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. In a statement at the weekend by its spokesman, Saheed Adeola, quoting its YYC National President, Comrade Eric, YYC particularly faulted what it described as unnecessary alarm raised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over the number of registered voters credited to Osun State in the latest nationwide pre-registration exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to INEC’s figures, Osun State recorded 393,269 pre-registrations, the highest in the country. But some of the stakeholders including the PDP and ADC criticised the figures as unrealistic alleging fraud. Responding, INEC had in a statement on Thursday by its chairman's spokesman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, debunked the allegations, explaining that the current figures are consistent with data from INEC’s 2021 online registration exercise, contrary to allegations. Describing the alarm raised by the PDP and ADC as needless, the YYC said, “The figures for Osun State are not unusual. “In any case, in the 2022 Governorship election in Osun State, PDP defeated the APC. It is therefore, surprising that the PDP will now query the statistics. “In fact, contrary to their claims, the number of registrants recorded in Osun State in the latest exercise aligns with the pattern recorded in 2021. “For instance, Osun recorded 232,880 registrants in a similar exercise conducted by the same INEC in 2021. There is no significant difference in the data recorded for Osun State in 2021 and the figures of 393,289 2025 for the 2025 online pre-registration. “Even at that, the Commission will still clean up the data, and publish the register for claims and objections by citizens before the exercise is finalised.” YYC said, “Interestingly, they are querying the figures for Osun and the South West in the latest exercise but not those of the FCT. “Rather than busy themselves in raisin an unnecessary alarm that amounts to storm in a tea cup, the PDP and ADC should participate in mobilising our people to register in the Continuous Voter Registration, instead of querying figures, vand heating up the polity unnecessarily”

The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Forum (NSCF) has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against entertaining any attempts by Senator Lawal Usman Adamu, popularly known as Mr. LA, to return to the party, describing the move as a desperate attempt to salvage his dwindling political relevance. In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its spokesperson, Comrade Danjuma Paul, the NSCF accused the Senator, who currently represents Kaduna Central Senatorial District, of political inconsistency and a lack of genuine commitment to the welfare of his constituents. “Senator LA’s recent political trajectory has been nothing short of opportunistic. From defecting from the APC to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and now allegedly exploring ties with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), his political manoeuvres reveal a pattern of survivalist politics rather than public service,” the statement read. The forum said such frequent political realignments raise questions about the senator’s ideological convictions and loyalty to the platforms that brought him to office. NSCF described Senator LA's tenure as being devoid of legislative achievements or impactful constituency projects, accusing him of engaging in “belly politics” and filing frivolous petitions rather than addressing the pressing needs of the people he represents. “His record is marked by an absence of significant legislation or developmental initiatives. Instead of returning to his constituency with innovative solutions, he has chosen to deploy political theatrics that have done little to improve the lives of his constituents,” the group stated. The forum urged APC stakeholders at both the state and national levels to reject any overtures from the senator, warning that his return to the party would be a setback for efforts to uphold integrity, accountability, and performance-based politics. “At a time when political parties should be prioritising competence and genuine representation, it would be unwise to welcome an individual whose political career has been defined by inconsistency and underperformance,” the statement added. The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting candidates with a clear track record of service and urged party leaders to remain focused on strengthening the APC with credible and committed individuals.

The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has described as commendable, the designation of the institution and five other universities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones by the Federal Government as Centres of Excellence in Sports. A statement by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, ABU, dated Wednesday, August 20, 2025, said that the other five universities designated as Centres of Excellence in Sports are University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Benin; University of Ibadan; University of Jos; and Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri. The decision to establish the Sports Centres of Excellence across the country’s six geopolitical zones was announced in Abuja last week by the Hon. Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, CON, when he inaugurated a 20-member National Sports-Education Review Committee. Commenting on the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, said for ABU, the designation of the university as a Centre of Excellence in Sports was both an honour and a call to higher responsibility. “This recognition is most deserving. Ahmadu Bello University has a long and proud tradition in sports, having produced some of Nigeria’s finest athletes, coaches, and sports administrators over the years. “Beyond academics, the university has always believed in the power of sports as a unifying force, a tool for youth development, and a vehicle for building character and resilience”, Prof. Ahmed said. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the institution’s facilities, history, and human resources made ABU a natural choice as a Centre of Excellence in Sports. The Vice-Chancellor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration for the foresight and assured that ABU would justify the confidence reposed in the institution by delivering excellence in sports for the benefit of Nigeria. He also said the decision to establish such centres aligned perfectly with the broad reform agenda of the Hon. Minister of Education, who had consistently emphasized the need to diversify the functions of universities beyond classroom teaching. The Minister, according to him, had championed curriculum reforms, skills development, innovation, and the integration of entrepreneurship and industry linkages in higher education. Prof. Ahmed stressed that sports today was no longer leisure alone, as it was a multi-billion-dollar industry globally. “Nigeria has the talent, the energy, and the youthful population to be a global sports powerhouse. What has been missing is a coordinated system that combines research, training, infrastructure, and talent management”, he also said. He explained that centres of excellence such as the one designated in ABU could bridge that gap by serving as platforms for innovation, professional training, and commercialisation of sports. The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence that if properly harnessed, the initiative could stimulate job creation, attract investment, and diversify Nigeria’s economy through sports.
