I actually disagree with above. Only the few finance guys that are lucky enough to work in big IB's can boast of the anomaly you are talking abt. Even at that the salary is not that disproportional. The bonuses are and that's always due to the number of deals they make for the company.

Do you know some lawyers that work for IB's actually earn more than the analysts and wealth managers?
My office is next to Slaughter & May and you should really come and see the kind of cars these guys drive et al

u r definitely right about that and they are just very lucky that they have nuff institutions that enable technology evolution.
They had still be the world most dominant economy come 2015 (read dis in evening standard yesterday)

Look at it this way, they do borrow money from china but will most probably sell technology to her.

money money money
dats the answer
finance guys help make the company grow bigger bigger and even more bigger
They help make the shareholders smiling
They have the very shrewd/rare knowledge of what and when to invest in.

As an engineer methinks the only way to compete is to invent something. James Dyson is just a common engineer like us but didn't accept the role of salaried worker.

Finance is greatly overrated cos most of the platforms used to derive 'em figures are built by the engineers (tech guys)
I think people are generally driven towards finance (IB) cos of better salary prospect and this is so because of the stress and longer hours involved.
The question everyone should ask themselves is "should i go for money instead of good quality of working life"

U have to base your arguments on facts and figures.
Can you tell me how much a barrel of oil cost in the 80s?
can you tell me how much an ounce of gold cost in the 80s?
can you tell me how many barrels of oil was being produced daily in the 80s?
can you give me the inflation figures in the 80s?

Seriously dude, u need to understand all these things before you jump to conclusions.
10K of 80's is probably 100K of dis century due to inflation and the correlation between the price of oil/gold et al

I hope you know Soludo's muted devaluation of Naira wouldn't have guaranteed/improve our ailing economy. We have enough rot in the system that we need a major overhaul before we can get it right. Basics needs to be put in place and sentiments totally eradicated which by then should provide an avenue where corruption will be a thing of the past.

1. Our Legislators are the highest paid in the world for a developing nation, this is an anomaly that needs urgent correction.
Have you done a proper comparison on the value of pounds/dollars to the our megre Naira? Yes they are over-paid but i wouldn't go as far as using anomally.
An average house in the UK cost about £160K whilst an average house in Lag or abj will set u back something in the region of N50M

2. Our Central Bank was a able to find a phoney N600 billion to bail out banks that were not distressed in the first place.  Yet no Inflation.
Did you ever try to find out how that money was raised? I believe it was done through quantitaive easening

3. There is no reasons why it should not be implemented straight away except for the uproar it will cause, hence staggered implementation. To be sincere the earlier they get to that figure N200,000.00 the better. The 10 year I mentioned in my earlier post my be too late making the gains to be eroded by inflation
You still haven't explained how you came about the acceptable annual salary of N200k per annum. I expect you to show me some calculations i.e.
rent cost
feeding
transportation
education for children
security
Domestic bills

4. The reason why Abuja is the most expensive real estate city in Africa after Luanda is because u have about 600 people each armed with N40 million chasing scarce goods and services in the city. Not taking the ministers are other government officials into account .
Wrong. The reason why a place will be overpriced has something to do with demand and supply. Demand more than available supply

5. The country is a Rich and wealthy country. If one man can be found guilty of embezzling $580 Million dollars, God knows how many have got away with it we might as well add these huge sums of money lying about to our under paid workers to give them liveable wages.
You still haven't explain what yardstick you are using to measure how she is classified as been Rich and Wealthy. What's the GDP per capita? Do a comparative analysis of the like for like countries with similar population and resources to see if you will arrive at Nigerian being Rich and Wealthy

6. Since the Naira got devalued by 1,500% in the mid eighties wages have not being adjusted to reflect this devaluation.
Did we ever officialy devalue our currency?

Seriously what's your profession?
Are u making assumption that CPI & PPI will stay stagnant to be able to predict them kinda figures you are chuning out?
Do you know if we going to have negative growth or stagflation?

I suggest you go and read basic economics. Google is your friend remember.

An English MP only gets about £68,000.00 per annum that is 5 times the lowest briton using £11,500.00 as a benchmark. There is no justification for our Legislators getting what they presently getting.
I hope you know that's just the salary.
The average allowance they claim is £118000 per annum.

I am not arguing against reducing the allowance or what-not. I am arguing against Mr Knowall plucking a 3M figure (salary +allowance) from outer-space.

Excesses should always be curbed in line with CPI

I think there is valid point here

The point has be answered - get rid of wastage and re-distribute, I am sure the country will be ok. Afterall Sanusi injected 600 billion into the Nigeria economy with no sight of Inflation in the horizon. I am sure we will be fine, Nigeria is a wealthy nation.
Population and corruption points to a different conclusion

proudly9ja:
@ jaybee,

one of the things included is a quaterly 30million for 'constituency allowance'. Now unless you know something I do not know, I hardly hear of them doing anything in their various constituencies. Maybe apart from settling the boys.

I am not an accountant or even in the finance field but I do think that something needs to be done to reduce the allowances those guys receive. It has been said that Nigerian senators are the highest paid in the world meanwhile the people live on less than a dollar a day. That definitely means there is something wrong somewhere?
Do you know how much an average MP earns per annum?
do the comparison
