Abia Warriors defender Obaroakpo confident Eagles will scale Burkina hurdle
Published on Tuesday, 20 October 2015 09:30

By Sam Nnaji
Abia Warriors captain Austin Obaroakpo has described his full debut for the Nigerian national team as "great" and an "honour" after the team's win over Burkina Faso in a first leg of the CHAN qualifiers at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Saturday. Obarakpo was a member of the squad that hit the Burkinabes 2-0.
"Honestly it feels very great and I am very happy knowing fully well it was my first full debut for the national team and the whole country was watching me", said Obaroakpo, whose previous action for the national team was a three minute appearance in the friendly against Cameroon in Belgium about a week ago. "I feel honoured being among the chosen ones to represent the country and the whole country watching you. It was a good opportunity and I knew I had to use it very well but you know I just can't describe the feeling. I feel great".
The central defender also praised the team's winning performance admitting that they knew it would be a tough game. "We didn't expect an easy game because they are a good side", Obaroakpo continued. "They beat our under-23 a few weeks ago but we prepared well for it and we expected a very difficult game.
"You know a lot of people were worried because we were coming from different teams and the problem was if we will 'gell' very well. But we have been training together for the past two weeks and even though the two weeks is not enough, we had to ginger ourselves and talk a lot to ourselves and know ourselves better. We knew that first of all we must put our house in order. The understanding will be on the pitch and off the pitch.
"We had a great performance. We are not disappointed. I am happy we got the result. To get two goals was not easy, we played as a team and we worked hard for it. I thank God that our efforts in training showed on the pitch."
The home-based Eagles got a 24th minute breakthrough from Nasarawa United's Yaro Bature but had to wait till the 13 minute from time to double their lead. Team captain and Warri Wolves' talisman Gbolahan Salami converted a penalty after Enyimba's Ezekiel Bassey had been brought down in the area. Obaroakpo admits that he, like the home fans was worried about the slender lead.
"Honestly I was worried because I knew 1-0 was not enough, we knew we were still going to Burkina Faso to play the second leg, we knew we needed to increase the goal tally. We felt better after the second goal," He said.
But the defender also acknowledges that the job is only half done and there is an even stricter test in the second leg next weekend in Ouagadougou.
"We are expecting a very difficuilt game because will play at home and in front of their fans who will be cheering them up, it not going to be an easy game at all but we are ready and we are going to keep training and preparing for the game. Our target is to go there and win, we can't rely on a draw," Obaroakpo revealed.

LMC postpones Sunshine Stars vs Rangers fixture

A minor adjustment has been made to the Match Day 34 fixture of the Glo Premier League as the game between Sunshine Stars and Rangers International has been put on hold.
A letter to both clubs signed by Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer of the League Management Company (LMC) said it had granted the request of Sunshine Stars FC of Akure which cited the involvement of six of their players in the Super Eagles team scheduled to play against Burkina Faso in a return leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers this weekend.
The LMC noted that it approved the request in line with Article B15.14 of the Framework and Rules of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) which provides that a club with five players or more in the national team camp can apply for a postponement of its fixture.
The LMC said all other fixtures of Match Day 34 will hold as scheduled on Wednesday, October 21 while a date for the Sunshine Stars versus Rangers International engagement will be announced on or before Thursday, October 22.

Manchester United midfielder Herrera bizarrely criticised by Garth Crooks

Garth Crooks has form for the unpredictable and his analysis of Ander Herrera's weekend performance fell into that category.

Crooks felt Rooney deserved credit for Herrera's performance
Amid the wave of positivity following
Ander Herrera 's performance in
Manchester United 's terrific 3-0 win at Everton on Saturday, one man felt someone else deserved just as much credit.
Garth Crooks, the long-time BBC pundit who once suggested Scotland international James Morrison should earn an England call-up and concocted the '4-2-1-3-1' formation, had some harsh words for Herrera.
"Herrera is very fortunate to have such an accommodating captain as Wayne Rooney, who has waited patiently for him and other new arrivals to come to terms with Louis van Gaal’s new system, often to Rooney’s detriment," Crooks said .
Herrera has scored three goals and assisted two in six starts this season, while he has netted an impressive 11 goals in 27 United starts.
Rooney, meanwhile, has been heavily - and justifiably - criticised this term for a string of anaemic displays and his goal at Everton - created by Herrera - was just his fourth Premier League away strike in 19 months.

"You should be thanking me, you creative and goalscoring nobody."

LMC congratulates CHAN Eagles, urges them to reach finals

Published on Sunday, 18 October 2015 17:41

The League Management Company (LMC) is celebrating Nigeria's Super Eagles B creditable performance and win against Burkina Faso in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) as a reflection of the steady improvement and growing competitiveness of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and commended the players for the victory.
Chairman of LMC, Shehu Dikko, who was at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium with some other Directors of the LMC to cheer the players, spoke to them after the match urging them to double their contributions to ensure the final qualification is achieved.
Dikko had led LMC Directors and NPFL Club Chairmen including Okey Ibe of Heartland, Akin Akinbola of Sunshine Stars, Dr. Ayo Ayodele and Okey Kpalukwu of Sharks on a morale boosting visit immediately after the game and urged them to "work even harder for the return leg as the job is not done yet until we secure the ticket to play in the finals in Rwanda".
Dikko described the performance as "a positive statement for our domestic league which didn't go unnoticed by the global football community. More performances like this will be to your personal career benefit and greater attraction of positive attention to the NPFL from across the globe".
Dikko, who also is the 2nd Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said the performance of the players and the outcome of the game is in tandem with the Federation's objectives of using CHAN as a developmental platform for discovery of players that can be drafted to challenge for shirts in the mainstream Super Eagles.
Yaro Bature of Nasarawa United fired Nigeria into a first half lead while Enyimba's Ezekiel Bassey's wing run into the Burkinabes' box committed them to a penalty tackle that was coolly converted by Gbolahan Salami of Warri Wolves. The LMC Boss said, "the match was won comfortably to ensure that our qualification chances are now in our hands and it is obvious that we posted such credible performances from several players that suggests they can easily make the grade for the Super Eagles".
The return leg comes up this Saturday in Ouagadougou.

TOP FIVE: NPFL STRIKERS OF 2015

Friday, October 16, 2015
With five weeks to go until the conclusion of the 2014/15 season, Goal presents the top five players in each position across the division; this week we focus on the strikers

FEATURE By Samuel Ahmadu Follow on Twitter
As the Nigeria Professional Football League nears its conclusion, Goal
celebrates some of the campaign's key men.
In this edition of the series, we present the top five strikers in the NPFL.
1. Gbolahan Salami - Warri Wolves

Salami's goalscoring form both puts him in strong contention for the golden shoe award, and Warri Wolves for the league title.
After his brief loan switch at Serbia's Red Star Belgrade, Salami returned to Wolves and began firing on all cylinders. Salami's consistent goalscoring form has been a regular characteristic of the striker for some campaigns; in the 2013/2014 season he netted 18 goals for Wolves, having scored 13 goals in only 10 games the season before.
With several braces, he has already notched up 14 goals this season - one behind leading scorer Esosa Igbinoba of Nasarawa United. Salami starred in the bronze-winning campaign of the home-based Eagles in South Africa last year, netting twice.
Paul Aigbogun's men are the richest goalscoring side in the league, and the former Shooting Stars man has been influential in this superb campaign. Enyimba could have claimed the title with five games left to play, but for the unrelenting scoring form of Salami, who recentl scored in the 1-1 away draw against Enugu Rangers to keep the Warri outfit in the race for the title.
It's little surprise that Sunday Oliseh has turned to Salami to lead the home-based Eagles in their upcoming Chan qualifier against Burkina Faso.
2. Chisom Chikatara - Abia Warriors

Chikatara's consistent form has shaped Abia Warriors' campaign and places him among the division's finest frontmen.
After joining the Warriors of Umuahia in 2012 at the age of 17, Super 'S' inspired their promotion a year later, netting 21 goals and making him the top scorer in the second tier in 2013.
His speed on the ball, dribbling ability and prolific finishing make him one of the hottest prospects, and he has scored 13 goals this season, including his hat-trick against Rangers. He's already managed five more than last term and while Abia Warriors remain outside the top four, Chikatara has demonstrated that he belongs at a top club.
He sits only two goals behind leading scorer Igbinoba and will hope to impress for the home-based Super Eagles during the 2016 Chan...if they get there!
3. Tunde Adeniji - Sunshine Stars

If any player deserves kudos for Sunshine Stars' overall consistent campaign this season, Tunde Adeniji must top the commendation list with his incredible attacking drive for the Owena Waves.
His impressive goal-getting form was hugely instrumental to his side's stay at the summit for most of the first half of the campaign. Adeniji, a product of Ondo State Football Agency youth team Rising Stars, is justifying the huge five-year long investment the Ondo outfit made in him, as he had already notched up 35 goals in 65 appearances since 2013.
After Dele Olorundare failed to impress this season, Adeniji stepped up to the plate and never looked back, racking up 14 goals to keep the former Akure Gunners in the title mix.
A week after their infamous 2-1 home collapse to Nasarawa United in the second stanza, the Akure-born prodigy inspired 2-1 away win at Kwara United to recover Sunshine Stars' title dreams. The outcome in Ilorin highlights his huge contribution, and Adeniji has been influential as his side have snatched 10 points on the road.
4. Anthony Okpotu - Lobi Stars

The Pride of Benue may have struggled for much their campaign this season, but Plot, who dumped Libya's Al-Ittihad after just two seasons, has been pivotal in Lobi Stars' season-long title push with his aggression, pace, intelligence and strength.
The 21-year-old has shined brightly in the second part of the season, and received the League Blogger Award for September after missing out in July.
The former Nigeria U20 star has netted 10 goals so far this term - six of them in August alone - including two on the road which secured three straight wins for Justin Tenger's men. He also fired Stars to the 2015 Federation Cup final, and Lobi will need their man to be at his best if they are both to escape relegation and lift the domestic cup.
5. Mubarak Umar - Wikki Tourists

Wikki Tourists finished fourth at the NNL Super Four held in Ilorin, but amazingly, as a newly promoted side, they have managed to keep their foot in top three throughout the season.
Alhough some kudos must go to Godwin Obaje, Victor Yakubu and Uche Martins, the Bauchi outfit will be most thankful to Umar, as his contributions cannot be overlooked.
Since returning to the elite division in 2014, Wikki would not be considered as title contenders had Umar's 10 goals been removed from their overall tally of 37. Aside from goals, he has been an inspirational presence for Abdul Maikaba's side this term and even on his rare off days, he knows how to trouble defenders.
It may not be pretty, but Umar has been effective, and has regularly plundered valuable goals this term.

We are not afraid of Warri Wolves - Sokari
By: Farriel Allaputa Date: 13 October 2015

Enyimba's talented midfielder Sokari Kingsley has insisted that the club have enough firepower to see off the threat of Warri Wolves and clinch their 7th league title.
He made the remarks after the club subdued Shooting Stars of Ibadan on their way to a 2-1 win on Matchday 33 in Aba and stretched their lead at the top to 5 points.
He described Sunday's win as 'tough' and revealed that the substitutions made by coach Kadiri Ikhana were pivotal to their triumph.
"I would say it was a tough game. In the first half we had a lot of chances, but in the second half they got into the game and they were playing well, but we thank God for everything.
"The substitutions were perfect and we got in front again. We are very excited because we remain on top of the table," he said.
Sokari was however unperturbed by the impressive form of Warri Wolves, snapping hard at the heels of the Elephants.
"That Warri Wolves got a point in Enugu is none of our business. The important thing is that we won our own game. We have a number of matches to play both at home and away and I believe that we can pick points from these games."
"They can win matches but we too will win ours to maintain our lead. We are not afraid of Warri Wolves."
Despite his bullish mood however, the 20-year-old hoped for a positive result in Lafia against Nasarawa United.
"If we get a point or win in Nasarawa, it will help us remain comfortable at the top of the table, so it would be good for us to get a good result in the next match."

‘Chairman’ Chukwu says league has recovered its groove

Published on Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:19
Hits: 525
By Tunde Oyedele
Ex-international Christian Chukwu believes the golden era of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has been gradually restored even as he warned all five front runners in the Glo Premier League not to consider the title won until the last day of the season.
The former Rangers and Heartland Coach attributed the surge in attendance at matches to the reforms in the league which has witnessed strict enforcement of regulations and tasked the League Management Company (LMC) to continue monitoring the remaining games closely to ensure the season ended on a high.
On the title chase, he stressed that none of the current title contenders; Enyimba International, Warri Wolves, Wikki Tourists, FC Giwa and Sunshine Stars can claim absolute certainty of winning the league until probably when the last match of the season has been played.
From the captain of Nigeria's first Nations Cup success in 1980 came this observation: "It is obvious that the Nigeria Premier League is getting better based on what we have witnessed in the past three seasons, and kudos to the organisers for their initiatives”.
"The huge presence of spectators at designated League venues these days is an icing on the cake for a high performance and the elite league is now competitive and attractive to watch. I believe with time, the days when Nigerian fans rely on foreign leagues to enjoy good football will be over”.
He said improved officiating of games, tight security at match venues and other creative incentives given to players and their clubs have given the league the credibility it lacked for many years.
"What fascinates me is that more people are now storming the Stadia to watch our league. I have watched some high quality NPL matches this season and the tie between Rangers and Warri Wolves was another fantastic encounter. It's as if the game should not end because of its sweetness", Chukwu, popularly known as the Chairman told npfl.ng in Enugu.
After watching an exciting Matchday 33 between Rangers International and Warri Wolves at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, Chukwu, nicknamed Chairman in his playing days agreed that the set standards have enhanced the professional behaviour of club managers, players, referees and other stakeholders in the league.
He said that "all eyes are on the Glo Premier League in Nigeria right now because of the giant strides so far achieved by the organisers, hence the need to sustain the enforcement of regulations”.
According to him, “there has been a general shift in public mood about the Nigeria Premier League because clubs now win games anywhere (home or away) without fear of intimidation”.
He spoke against the background of swift sanctions the LMC have been levying on players and Club Managers and Match Officials for unacceptable on and off field conducts as part of the regeneration of domestic football league in the country.
"However, I want them to continue with their zero tolerance approach to on-field misbehaviors of the players and officials including the Referees. Such stringent measures are needed if the best clubs must emerge as authentic winners of the league", he advised

Adio's dead-ball deliveries keeping Akwa Utd off danger

Every team needs a special player. Someone who is capable of popping up at decisive moments and with a stroke of individual brilliance hand the team an edge when things aren't probably going according to plan.
For some teams, it can be a special kind of striker, one who needs just half a chance to make all the difference. For others this special player can even be the goalkeeper, one whose goalkeeping heroics can save the day on a day when the team is off colour. This speciality can be such player's excellent set piece deliveries or an ability to string passes no one else can or always showing up in positions that makes goal scoring inevitable. Special players are of varying qualities and degrees but virtually every football team can relate with this.
Akwa United has such a player, defensive midfielder Yusuf Adio but his speciality is not as much as in his defensive contributions as his wizardry in executing set pieces. The relegation threatened side has seen those relegation fears allayed with back to back home wins that have separated them from others in the drop zone with the six feet tall midfielder scoring in both games through brilliant free kicks executed in similar fashion from similar positions. The beauty of those goals are such that opposition defenders would be forgiven for applauding the effort.
In truth, there isn't really anything special about scoring in consecutive matches but it is left is left for imagination the relief it brought to the team when he scored against Nasarawa United a fortnight ago as well as firing his team nice and early against Abia Warriors in the home game that followed. Both proved crucial as they were both the match winners. Both deflated the respective opponents and both handed under pressure coach Zachary Baraje a breather at a time when the margin for error was minimal. A special player had offered the team something special when it was most needed.
"I'm just happy for him", goalkeeper Femi Kayode said of the midfielder, after his latest heroics. "He has been practicing a lot on set pieces in training. Like they say practice makes perfect. I'm very happy for him because he is using his hard work to help the team stay up".
Unlike most footballers, Adio says he learnt and honed this special skill by studying his Akwa United teammate, Nnamso Edo. "I learnt from one of my teammates here, Nnamso Edo because he is a specialist in free-kicks and penalty kicks. I have been doing it right from training and I am happy that I scored a crucial goal" Adio disclosed to www.npfl.ng
Nnamso Edo made the headlines early last season shooting into an early lead in the top goal scorers chat thanks to his dangerous set piece deliveries which he repeated game after game in the opening games of that season. This season however Edo has not seen a lot of action having fallen down the pecking order in Zachary Baraje's team but Yusuf has shown he has come of age adding this special feature to his defensive responsibility.
And with the season inching to a close, Adio promises more of such goals. "I'm happy with my second goal this season. I've already told my colleagues that I am going to score five goals from the remaining matches. I know I will still score more goals from free-kicks this season. We are also playing against Lobi Stars in the Federations Cup final ahead. I want to help my team anyway I can". The former Bridge FC of Lagos Star pledged.
No doubt, future opponents have gotten the message, 'Beware of conceding free-kicks around your goal area.'

Maybe i was being unfair but u sounding rude and arrogant like for starters were u get microphone from that u come dey drop am for my head? Is that one good?lmao.
But that aside I respect ur opinion and most importantly your passion and all the same my opin should be at least not beat up like it came from a mad man. I actually watch the Glo Premier League i have made a few comments on here about guys I like, now I am no expert but I can speak on the few games i have watched on ss9 who show quite a few Warri matches. Solomon Kwambe was picked by Oliseh so he deserves a mention and in truth I personally never too liked Salami I felt Keshi was forcing him on us. If he was so good why is he still in the league? He has had more publicity than any local player in recent history but yet top club have still not taken notice. I can't say Kwambe is better because they play different positions but goals don't make a player the star of any team. Is Muller the star in Germany? Maybe. Is Morata the "Messi" of Juve? Maybe. Or even Bony with Ivory Coast. The Warri Wolves have a packed team that get's at least 5 call ups for the Eagles each time. Now for you to close your eyes without any consideration and pick out Salami as their best player is not only wrong it is kind of insulting to the other players on the team. Yes he is a key player for them because somebody has to finish the countless goalscoring opportunities created by the midfield. I remember the hattrick he had, I forget the match but in the first half he missed 3 "God gave me" chances but they kept on feeding him the ball. I even forgot to mention the beach football playing sand eagle on the team-please someone help me with his name-this team is packed my guy, Salami didn't take them to 2nd place all by himself.

I love the fact that you think throwing out stats that even my little niece knows gets u any points. First off this isn't a fight it is a debate don't work yourself up for nothing. I never said Salami wasn't a good player i said he isn't the best on his team. Fact Salami wasn't even part of the teams plans this year being that he was loaned to a club in Serbia. He has scored 15 goals already but did he score all alone? Don't you think it is testament to his midfield that he has scored so much? How can you honestly say in a team with the likes of Stanley Dimgba, Ossai Uche, Solomon Kwambe and Azubuike Egwuekwe that Salami tops the list. Then you say consistency with the national team and that to me is alarming since he has scored only 3 goals in 13 matches and I remember at least 2 of those goals....nothing special, a tap in against Congo in Calabar and a ball served on a China dish by Ighalo against Chad. Btw news flash the season is over at 5 points adrift the Warri wolves better watch out for Wikki Tourist who are only 2 points behind them. I claim no immense knowledge about anything including football. I am here to learn and interact about football buddy so back off. You just sound like a guy who goes around starting internet fights I no dey one my guy carry go.

Hello BascoVanVeli and every other follower of this thread.
Firstly I appreciate the immense effort of every other member of the Warri Wolves team but we must acknowledge that one player has been most influential to the clubs ascension this term and he is Gbolahun Salami .

What shall be the result if those chances created are converted to goals?

In another bid to deride Gbolahun"s immense efforts for him club you erroneously put Solomon Kwambe "s name in your list. Forget the incessant SEagles invitation,Solomon Kwambe has been more of a BENCH player for Warri Wolves this season.

Listen ,I am in fact not a Wolves fan I m a supporter Enyimba fc and we are top on the log
