Kobojunkie:******************* People have every right to question their elected officals. It took almost ten years of mismanagent between Lucky and Osunbor to destroy Edo state. The expectations of Oshiomole have to be realistic. His budget was only approved last month after being held up by the majority PDP in the state assembly. The Oba of Benin had to appeal before the budget was adopted. Indiscriminate awards of contract without proper planning or oversight will yield the same misery of the past. The present condition of Edo state has everything to do with Lucky. Lagos state was not as backward as Edo when Fashola took over. The internal resources are not comparable. I lived in Midwest state from 1970 to 1980 and I still have business and family interests in Benin. It is not cowardice of the past but rather it is still present today. Do you think the common man is currently protesting against Oshiomole today. Most of the attacks are from political opponents fighting for the spoils of power. The doctors are upset because he raised the license fees for private hospitals to a reasonable level. |
Most Nigerians are cowards and submissive when it comes to stannding up for their rights. This is why I give props to the Niger Delta activists. Where were all these Edo people when Lucky was looting and making Edo the basket case that it has become? They did not protest on the streets to stop the corruption. Lucky is flaunting his wealth in Benin and the sycophants are there kissing up to him. All he had to do was pay his #3 million Naira fine after stealing billions of Naira from the people of Edo state. |
Nigeria the so called "giant of Africa" cannot treat a hip fracture. Where are our so called medical experts. I hope the ADC recovers fully. Politicians should not be allowed to switch parties after being elected. Resign and compete under the banner of the new party if they chose to switch. |
Enquirer:******************** Enquirer, the chronic underdevelopment you mention is created by the same high networth individuals in government and business who steal the national funds meant for development for their private use. This has lead to poverty and social breakdown. I will say that more of these so called high networth individuals should be kidnapped to separate them from their stolen loot. Nigeria is broken and it cannot be fixed by wishes alone. Drastic action is required to shake up the elite to the realities of Nigeria. This drastic change will be initiated from the bottom classes because Nigeria in its broken state is working well for the elite. More power to the kidnappers as long as they target those at the seat of power and their accomplices. |
aby2002ng:****************** Why do you think anyone is interested in your fraud story? Are the properties in SA free? You can buy all of it for yourself. |
It is anarchy in Nigeria. This country is under a democratic dictatorship. Laws do not apply to the military or police in Nigeria. Laws are only for the weak and poor in Nigeria. |
By Emmanuel Obe, Onitsha A former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Prof. Miriam Ikejiani-Clark, has said Nigeria is a failed state. Clark said in a paper she delivered in Onitsha on Thursday that the country had failed to live up to the expectations of a modern state, having been crippled by corruption, politics of patronage and collapse of basic infrastructure. The occasion was the second edition of The Perspective, an annual lecture series of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture held in Onitsha. The theme of this year's edition is, "Critical Development Challenges in Anambra State." Ikejiani-Clark, who made a reference to a recent statement by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that he was not elected to build roads and provide power, said the Economic and Financial crimes Commission ought to immediately arrest and investigate the former president. She said the former president and his former Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih, should be held to account for the billions of naira that they collected for the provision of infrastructure, which they did not build in their years in office. "We have a classical case of a non-functional state. Nigeria cannot even refine its oil. Nigeria is not functioning," she said, as she described the rerun election in Ekiti State as a shame of a nation. The professor of Political Science said any talk about making Nigeria functional must start from the people constituting the country discussing their staying together. On Anambra State, Ikejiani-Clark commended the Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, for articulating a programme for the development of the state. But she said the Anambra Integrated Development Strategy failed to meet the daunting development needs of the state. She said so much still needed to be done to improve the standard of life, sanitation, infrastructure and resource utilisation. She blamed the decrepit state of Anambra State on the politics of looting that had characterised the state since its inception, and said the government must do something to harness the resources and goodwill of the Anambra people all over the world. |
Abagworo:************************** Abagworo, so a kidnapper who steals 50,000 naira should be publicly stoned to death but a politician or army General who steals 5 billion naira should be rewarded with a chieftaincy title? In the typical condescending attitude of the Nigerian rich, Alex Ekwueme saw the problem of kidnapping as a law enforcement issue and not the social problem that it is. Nigeria has broken down socially and anarchy of the streets and government is now in play. Why did Nigeria not have the present level of armed robbery, car snatching, ritual murders and assassinations 20 or 25 years ago? No amount of enforcement will stop these social vices until the root causes are addressed. Nigeria needs more targeted kidnappings of the people whose actions have led to the deprivations of majority of Nigerians. I say kidnapp more corrupt politicians, businessmen and army generals that have looted the treasury and deprived Nigeria of a health care system, good roads, safe drinking water and electricity. If we are going to execute kidnappers, then we should also do the same to politicians who steal our money because they do more harm to the natioanl experience. China executes its corrupt politicians and we need same here. Why should sitting Governors have immunity from prosecution while in office. If an American Governor can solicit for bribes while in office without immunity, imagine what is possible in Nigeria where governors have immunity while in office. |
If the ex governor's house can burn up due to lack of a fire service, imagine what ordinary Nigerians have to deal with. He is the fool that built his mansion on a foundation of sand. I hope it was arson as long as there was no loss of life. Keep burning them all up. Where are those who mouth off about how Nigeria is more advanced than South Africa? |
blacksta:**************** Why is it that Nigerians never see anything wrong with Nigeria? This is country is clearly not safe enough for Lufthansa and they have spoken by keeping their crew in Ghana. This represents an economic loss to Nigeria and also a hit to our reputation. How can you say that Nigeria is safe when most of my friends who are private citizens have to travel around with security most of the time. We should come off our delusion that Nigeria is safe or "Giant of Africa". Size is only meaningful if it used to an advantage. Nigeria has clearly not made good use of its size. Twenty years ago, it would have been impossible for any foreign airline to contemplate Lufthansa's current move. Nigeria is retrogressing. |
"Properties With Pictures", is a great idea. By the same token, there should also be a section for "Properties Without Pictures". This section will also contain undeveloped lands. The flow of net traffic will tell the story. |
Becomrrich:****************** Mr Becommrich, there you go again missing the essence of this post with twisted logic. For the last time, the point of this post is that an Attorney General of Justice did right thing by resigning his position when he felt that his position was compromised by virtue of his action outside of office. He did not claim that his ticket was unjustified. If you read the post you will see that he admitted that he has a problem with speeding and this was his second suspension/infraction in four years. He is what they call a lead foot. Contrast that with Nigerian public officials that have no morals and would rather die in office than do what is noble. Have you ever heard of any Attorney General in Nigeria being issued a traffic citation? I am not defending traffic tickets as I have had my fair share of tickets driving for more than 20 years in North America. I know that officers often have a quota to meet and speed traps are often used to this end. |
Becomrrich:************************* Mr Becommrich, the Solicitor General of British Columbia resigned because of the ethical implication of his license being suspended and the attendant conflict of interest. You see, his ministry is in charge of the courts and police force that issued and subsequently suspended his license for excessive speeding. There is nothing in the letter of the law that mandated his resignation but the spirit of the law created the need for him to resign. What kind of message will he be sending to young kids who die daily racing their cars on highway 401 or any other in B.C when his own license has being suspended for the same reason. This is what separates public officials in countries that obey the rule of law from Nigerian officials. Next time, spend some moments to read a post before you jump off on a tangent with your comments. If you had read the post, you would have seen him articulate his reason for resigning instead of trying to ascribe some ulterior motive to his resignation. |
OgidiBoy:------------------------- Thanks for the observation. I noticed the mistake immediately upon posting but I am not sure about how to get into edit mode. I am sure the point is well received. |
B.C. Solicitor-General resigns John van Dongen steps down following revelations he lost his driver's licence over speeding tickets; still running in election • Article • Comments • JUSTINE HUNTER Globe and Mail Update April 27, 2009 at 3:35 PM EDT VANCOUVER — John van Dongen has resigned as solicitor-general of B.C. this morning, three days after he revealed that he had lost his drivers' license for repeated speeding violations. The B.C. Liberal candidate for Abbotsford South learned on April 16 that he was facing a four-month driving prohibition after receiving two tickets for excessive speeding in less than two years. Eight days after receiving the notice, he went public with the details and offered to give up those parts of his portfolio that relate to motor vehicles and traffic safety. Mr. van Dongen acknowledged he had a history of speeding and promised to take a defensive driving course, but said last week he would carry on as the province's “top cop.” John van Dongen, seen in this 2004 file photo, has resigned as B.C.'s Solicitor-General. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chuck Stoody) Related Articles Recent • Solicitor General assailed over traffic violations Internet Links • B.C. Election blog In a statement today, after enduring a weekend of controversy, Mr. van Dongen said he now believes he cannot carry on in his cabinet position. “Over the weekend I have reflected on my actions. I have heard from those who have rightly criticized my driving record that has undermined their confidence in my role as Solicitor General,” he said in a written statement. “Over the course of the last year, I have met with people who have lost family members because of speeding and other illegal driving behaviour. I have let them down and I have let down my constituents who depend on me to set the highest public example. For that I am deeply sorry.” He will continue to stand for re-election in the May 12 vote. Liberal Leader Gordon Campbell said his party's vetting process needs to change so that he knows whether candidates have poor driving records. Mr. Campbell said he didn't know about Mr. van Dongen's driving record when he appointed the Solicitor-General in 2007. "I think it's something we are going to have to ask about it, yes," he told reporters this morning. He stressed that it would take more than a single speeding ticket to disqualify a candidate. He said Mr. van Dongen's decision to resign was his own. "He thought about the families he let down." ************************** Just imagine a Nigerian State Attorney General being stopped by a traffic policeman and issued a ticket for excessive speeding. |
Am all for a revolution to take back Nigeria from these destructive forces in power. Bring the brooms out and sweep them all out. |
I will move that any posting of a physical building without a picture should be deleted. It is vey unprofessional to post ads for a #100 million Naira building without pictures. The estate ads for vacant lands are another matter. But we can start to enforce this requirement for completed structures. |
How many square feet of interior living space does drawing number two have? Does it have an attached indoor car garage and for how many cars? |
Does anyone have a link to the email addresses of the all federal ministers and the President? We all need to forward this letter to all members of Yar Adua's cabinet, the Senate and House of Representatives. The letter should also be forwarded to all opposition members and especially the AC governors. This country is on a dangerous path to destruction. |
pm05337:********************** God is not going to come down and sort the leaders out for us. The religious leaders have been compromised by money and the craze for wealth. The defeatist attitude of waiting for God for solutions is being exploited by the corrupt elite. Nigerians have to refuse to be bought by money, but unfortunately the vast majority of them have been so deprived that they cannot stand up for their rights or that which is right. We have to learn to speak truth to power. |
Before we can solve electoral problems in Nigeria, we need to solve the Nigerian problem first. The Nigerian psyche needs to fixed. Corruption and the adulation of ill gotten wealth will need to change. The quest for wealth at all costs leads to power at all costs. This vicious cycle then drives corruption. When honest citizens attempt to go into politics to contribute, they cannot often do so because their corrupt financial sponsors will often call the shots. There are a few exceptions such as the current Governor of Lagos state. Since the leaders cannot lead, the followers will need to stop following incompetence and start to drive change by demanding better from the government. It is time to stop accepting corruption and sub standard quality of life as the Naija style. |
I cannot understand why properties sellers here still refuse to include pictures with their listings. Listings of cars on Nairaland that sell for a few thousand dollars all have pictures while a property listing for a billion Naira has no picture to show for it. I will not make any contact with a real estate posting without a picture. I suppose these posters must believe that Nigerians are not sophisticated enough to demand good and accurate information in the buying process. |
This is what happens in a society that has decayed from the top. The kidnappers are now going after the class that has robbed Nigeria and created the misery for all. It is about time. I see a gradual evolution of the revolution that is needed to wake up Nigerians from their slumber. |
The President is privatising most public goods in Nigeria. This Conservative ideology that the private sector is always the best solution seems to have worked wonders for the U.S. financial sector and brought the global economy to its knees. I remember back in the days when the Ministry of works actually employed engineers that built infrastructures and undertook road maintainance. What is the relevance of the Nigeria Railway Corporation if it cannot employ rail engineers to construct and run rail services. With the level of unemployment in Nigeria, you would think that the various federal and state works departments can use the available resources to improve the quality of life for all. Governments seem to be more interested in awarding contracts to cronies that will never be executed. |
naijacutee:****************** I do understand the need for earth tone colors in Nigeria because of the heat but there are more such colors than cream or off white alone. |
A revolution of the masses is definitely in order. The elite of this country have so traumatised the masses that they do not feel the wealth of this nation belongs to all. The poor excuse of an Attorney General is running around making excuses for the thieves that were bribed by Haliburton. The thieves in power are running around strutting their stuff with impunity. It has to be made unacceptable to steal from the citizens of Nigeria. It is time to stop rewarding corrupt officials becuase of the lack of accountability. It has got to take a revolution because the thieves will not surrender their loot without a fight. |
What is the news value of this post and why are you afraid to name the owner of the vessel? This is a commercial vessel am sure. Who cares if the owner is related to a faceless and nameless Minister. |
Mr Becommrich, you did not address any of my questions to you. Giving the people that produce oil a state will not the lack of leadership and absolute corruption that has adversely affected people in that region. How many states do you believe is ideal for Nigeria given that most of the existing states are not economically viable? I am not in favour of the environmental degradation or the lack of resources in the oil producing areas of Nigeria. Creation of new states will not be the panacea to those problems. Most of your posts appear to pit one tribe against the other in Nigeria. If one sounds and writes like a tribalist, then he/she is most likey a tribalist. |
