you don't mean it? hmmm
am unical aspirant ooooo.
it's painful I can't change again.....

tell me more about uunical medical school.
teaching hospital and the rest....

Actually am ksu 300l medical student..... but due to accreditation issues. I decided to apply unical
Haba ni, just cos of what ai said? No o... Where are you from first of all? Unical medicine is not that competitive there. If your average score is up to 270, you're in. And if you're from Cross River State better for you, as they're very tribalistic. In your year two and three, you'll love the anatomy and physiology lecturers. They are there to help you. But the biochemistry lecturers are there to make sure you fail lol. Heartless set of lecturers were employed there lol. However, ai don't know much about the teaching hospital, I'm only dwelling based on what my supervisor said when ai asked her if she advice ai go back to Unical for medicine. (due to the fact that she did her house job there and later started lecturing there).

I would like to beg to disagree, I think it all boils down to the students. I just dislike the mental abuse metted out to students during clinical. They are supposed to be taught in love not in fear.

just wondering the fate of medics in state and private school then
Well, ai don't know. It depends on the consultants and senior residents in charge. Some are nice and welcoming, some are just there to frustrate students.

good evening able medics in da house.... i am Joshua, i am not one yet, bt i hope to be later this year.. i am kinda confused about some things and i really need clarifications....

1.. is MBBS an exam regulated and spearheaded by a medical school or there is a particular body responsible for the exam perhaps MDCN??

2. do different "medical schools" write the same MBBS ? i mean the same question... or at least of the same standard??

3. if the answer to the "no.2" above is "NO" ...aw do we test the quality of the doctors a particular med. school is churning out

1). The MB exams are spear headed by the medical school. The questions are not the same. There is oral, mcq, essay and practical exams for the first MB (after first semester year three) (depending on the school, I'm speaking based on Unical).
2). They definitely do not write the same questions, ai don't know if it's the same format for all medical schools in Nigeria, but there will be orientation for you, provided by your seniors to inform you on the nature of the MB exams in your school and if possible, enough past questions compiled by them. (For Unical medical school, others can speak for other schools).
3). The quality of medical students are tested during house job. E.g, my project supervisor told me not to do medicine in Unical, she advised ai go to Unilag or UNN, (she did her medicine in Unilag), because when she did house job in Unical (ucth), most of the medical students that graduated there did not know their left from their right, but she and some of her colleagues that graduated from UNN and Unilag medical schools were really shinning. She has been teaching in Unical medical school for more than five years and she said the way medical students are taught in Unical is not helping at all, hence she strongly advised Unilag or UNN. In conclusion, ai will say, those who are really good will be fished out during house job, and those who "managed" their way through medical school will be fished out too.

I support that, I wish medschool in nigeria could make the questions more clinical such as if a man reports with pain so so so what nerve could be affected etc. As it's done in US. Then again our system seems archaic.. increasing years in school.
lol@ archaic. There is a new curriculum. Ai hope it will be worth the seven years.

Unfortunately our system is teaching students to cram.(we nid to cram). questions should be clinically oriented and linked to basics of anatomy.. a problem solving approach should be introduced...
My dear, ai hope the new curriculum will reflect that.

unfortunately, anatomy (especially gross) doesn't deserve much attention (but deserves attention).. learning the code u are gone with your 50.. reading Keith moore with netters or Grant's to me is enough.. I believe one should read his atlas periodically then one is good to go.. writing answers straight to the point following a synopsis ..if is adult female breast(intro, body (describing nipple, lactiferous duct..e.t.c), blood supply, lymphatic drainage, clinical correlates).. shikena
Exactly... Ur head dey there jare... Although ai used Gray's anatomy. Very simplified, with enough details and with enough clinical application. Keith Moore isn't bad though, just that ai don't have the hardcopy, just the softcopy. That's just it, anatomy is straight to the point, physiology was mcq in MA time though, then bcm na the correct baba, you abandon it, it will abandon you. Loool. Onto cramming the pathways.

good for you. But also remember that mb doesn't end in anatomy. You have physiology and biochemistry to contend with. And I don't understand what you mean by part 2 mb. Do you mean the exam after 400l? Cos I'm sure by that time you won't be bothered with anatomy and co. The fact is as millex said "I know nothing".

Oyah unna well-done finished cutting person heart. Nothing dey happen God dey sha cause my own case will be different. On the issue of 1st degree DE doing badly as correctly said, the problem is usually distractions. Then again, the work one puts into his/her studies is what masters, it's better to go in with the mindset of "I know nothing", and put in effort to knowing. Studying, asking for explanations when stuck, etc. Not like it's easy but it's doable, it's all personal choice
yea ryt ooo. lol distractions. lol.

I cannot really say, because there is no easier way to differentiate the two groups, unless if you know them individually and you follow their academic performances. But speaking from experience, i noticed that the A levels guys do better, I know some of them personally. But I don't believe this subject of discourse has anything to do with IQ, but i think there are factors militating against the performances of the the degree holders. These include:Age, level of distractions (some are married while others are independent) and the ' I have done it before syndrome' etc.
lol especially marriage, its a huge distraction lol. Ah feel for myself.

I get what you are saying, but I think it's more of an assumption than a fact. From experience i have noticed that graduates (direct entry guys) deviate greatly from expected level of performance. It's actually easy to acertain this, because they thread behind everyone on the results sheet, having different matric numbers from other students. So one can easily check from the matric number one year lesser than his, to the last person on the list. That gives you the statistics of the DE geeks. The direct entry guys are mostly graduates the majored in one of the 3 BMS courses. But it's shockingly amazing, that when the in courses or even the main exams results are released, they end up performing poorly, even in the courses they majored. The reason for this, is yet to be ascertained and I think it's an interesting area of research. But what i just told you is no gossip neither an assumption, and it's currently happening in many schools including my school. But remember, i used the word"mostly"meaning that there few exceptions. But from records available to me, I'm yet to see or hear about any DE guy gunning a distinction even in the course he majored. Good morning and have a nice day.
. wow wow thanks. That's very interesting ai must say, well, I'm very much interested in research using questionnaires, ai will look into this issue, because it have been a thing of concern to me. Though the reverse is the case in Unical medical school.

From first & second mb now it's anatomy mb ko? Remember there's physiology and biochemistry... such graduates are here in our class, failed the exam, either resitted or repeated and it's not that they weren't brilliant. They just thought first mb would be easy for them because they have a first degree, I repeat having a first degree doesn't guarantee you passing 1st n 2nd mb.
Tis OK. Thanks for the correction. But you don't still get my point doh. Don't bother, ai don't argue.

I don't think she even gets herself. What we were told is that those who come with this particular impression of her's are the ones who don't make it because they feel they already know what is being taught. I didn't want to be the 1st to call her out. Thank God others did. Pls we don't need sentiments when giving advice and try to get your facts right.
. For the records, I'm not talking based on assumptions, ai graduated from unical. In Unical, the anatomy and physiology students do attend lectures with Medicine students. Ai had a lot of friends who were studying medicine. Some where graduates. Amongst them, graduates of anatomy passed the first and second MB gracefully and with distinctions (they were hardworking people) (in Unical, physiology, anatomy and Medicine students used to offer same courses in year one, two and three). Now here's my point, ai won't say they just sat back and folded their arms and assumed they knew it, hell no! my point is that, assimilation will be easier, since they are stuffs they've learnt before. They will find it easier to read, understand, and give back to the lecturers what they want. Like me now, in my year two, ai used to write stories, for example if I'm asked in exam to write on the anatomy of the mammary gland, ai will write and fill two pages of my answer scripts(ai hated diagrams).. at the end, al see a C. Ai got so devastated and ai had to meet my lecturers to explain for me. Twas then ai realised that when asked questions in anatomy, don't beat about the bush, go straight to the point, use headings (e.g. Introduction, diagram, blood supply, venous drainage, innervation, lymphatic drainage, applied anatomy). when asked in histology, state only what you will see under the microscope, adding a note on its functions, with appropriate diagrams, when asked in embryology, state only how it was made or formed, the different stages, is it from ectoderm, mesenchyme or endoderm? with appropriate diagrams and applied anatomy. You know when ai discovered that, my A's started flowing in, though ai got the info late. Now, tell me if ai will make same mistake if I'm given a second chance to do a B.Sc again, no! So for me, (ai don't know about the 2.1 graduates of anatomy you were talking about) When ai get admission to do this medicine, ai will use my experience, coupled with determination, desire and make sure ai don't repeat same mistakes ai made in my first degree. Ai will correct all the mistakes, disappointments and guilt.

Don't say things you aren't sure of. Having a first degree doesn't guarantee that 1st and second mb will be a walkover for u. I've seen cases where degree holders with 2.1 didn't even make it past first mb. Be sensitive about the info you give out. Thanks.
. A graduate of anatomy cannot pass anatomy MB? After effective reading? that's shocking though. Ad love to know WHY? Cos its not normal.

Actually I don't understand your statement above. Are you talking from experience or you're just saying what you think? Because from experience, i don't think that statement is true. So, do well not to mislead people. This is a public forum.
. I stand to be corrected. Though it will be very surprising if a graduate of anatomy fails second MB after detailed preparations.

please, doctors,i need some pieces of advice frm u all,i chose med&surg in my 2015/2016 jamb in oau,i had 252 as my average score while d stipulated merit cut off mark was 287 though it was my first attempt bt was offered microbiology,i ave great passion to study medicine right frm my childhood and my uncle wants to assist me by saying i shuld study it in u.k after i had graduated in microbiology yet i intend to register for jamb while studying microbiology and apply for medicine, how can i go abt it?
Sweetheart I'm not a doctor but ai can help. af told my story over and over again. But lemme repeat myself for ur sake. ai wrote my first jamb, scored 216(ai wasn't serious with my academics den, ai didn't have a reading pattern or plan). I wrote post ume and scored 282, making my aggregate to be 249. medicine cut off den was 260, so ai lost admission for medicine and was given human anatomy. My parents are both academicians, so they advised ai carry on with it, ai did graduate from anatomy and today, ai am working, I'm also applying for medicine through both jamb and direct entry. Trust me, with a first degree, first and second MB will be a walkover for u. But if you are not patient enough, you are free to keep writing jamb at home. However, my advice is for you to accept the MCB admission, put in your best, sit for jamb again. And if your uncle makes good his promise, booom! you are made, In that case you are a graduate, u have nothing to loose.

I've been greatly inspired by this thread.
I'm a microbiology graduate from one of the
Federal Universities, finished with a CGPA of
4.45, and would love to have cross via D.E into
med and surg.
I intend writing G.C.E this year, cos my O'level
isn't that strong, pls hope I won't be required to
submit my original O'level certificate, next year
when I apply for D.E into medicine?
auch! Almost a first class! Ah feel ur disappointment... #experience... I'm a graduate of human anatomy from a federal University too, ai sat for neco gce and waec gce last year, the results were not satisfying as distinction is greatly needed for easier passage through DE. Trust me, pray hard, because the probability of passing well with distinctions in gce is very slim. Ai wonder why too, because it seems they are marked down. Ai eventually had to register for internal waec, which ai just rounded up. About the certificate, ai don't know about the school you want to apply to, but in my Alma mata(Unical), you need to submit certificates, it is assumed you used your certificates for your final year clearance. So statement of result is not accepted for a direct entry applicant. And if you browse and research about the new BMAS for medicine and dental students, one sitting is now required for both jamb and direct entry candidates. With effect from 2016 /2017 session. Ai have two sittings and that really crumpled my plan to apply for DE. However, keep me posted, incase statement of result can be used, so that ai can apply too and not loose out on both sides.

all federal universities cut off mark is 200, states do collect 180, and also private universities, if you have enough money to study in a private university like mountaintop or redeemers university, then i will advice you to go there, you will get the admission sharp sharp, but if you wanna cut your coat according to your size, then state universities like esut and odumegwu ojukwu university is the best for you, you can thank me later.
