EducationStates May Decide On Reopening Of Schools, Businesses, Says PTF by Jeroboy(op): 12:05pm On Jun 01, 2020
The president had on May 18, extended the easing of the lockdown on the Federal Capital Territory , Lagos and Ogun States as well as extending the 8 pm-6 am curfew imposed nationwide, the ban on interstate movements and the lockdown of Kano State.

The meeting of the PTF with the president was a sequel to the expiration of the extension of the easing of the lockdown, which commenced on May 18, by the federal government.

Speaking with State House reporters after the meeting, PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation , Mr. Boss Mustapha, said the task force, which met with the president to submit its fourth interim report to him on the successes and challenges recorded by the group in the last two weeks, would await the decisions of the president on its recommendations.

While the OPS has called for full relaxation of the lockdown, stakeholders in the health sector, including the NMA and the PSN have called on the federal government to extend the nationwide lockdown and institute stricter implementation of measures put in place against community spread of the disease.

While calling on Nigerians to remain where they are as the virus will not move if they dont move, he said the government should enforce all the regulations earlier put in place, including the 8:00 pm nationwide curfew, interstate travel ban and closure of its airspace, adding that easing of lockdown should only happen when COVID-19 cases are flattening.

PoliticsWe’ll Soon Roll Out New Master Plan For Economy, Says Abdulrazaq by Jeroboy(op): 10:21am On May 30, 2020
Kwara State Governor, Abdul Rahman Abdul Razaq, yesterday said that, his administration would soon roll out new state master plans in economy, energy and agricultural sectors.

Abdul Razaq noted that it was the past administrations penchant for sharing money that put them into trouble and their consequent failure in the last years general elections.

He added that his administration had also restored the lost glory of the education sector through payment of necessary counterpart funds to the Universal Basic Education Commission saying we have paid N8 billion counterpart funds and with this we will be able to access N16 billion from UBEC. The governor also hinted of plan for downward review of the 2020 budget from N 160 billion to N120 billion, due to plummeting prices of crude oil in the global market which has led to shortfall in the federation allocations to states.

Abdul Razaq who thanked the people of the state for their support thus far, assured them that his administration would not renege on its promise to make Kwara work again and leave it better than it met it.

Christianity EtcLifting Ban On Religious Gatherings Impulsive by Jeroboy(op): 3:11am On May 26, 2020
FACED with the task of devising the most effective strategy to curtail the coronavirus outbreak, some state governors are choosing pious platitudes over straightforward scientific choices. All over the country, governors are competing to outdo one another in declaring churches and mosques open for congregational worship. With COVID-19 yet to peak in Nigeria, this is impulsive. The country lacks adequate facilities and equipment for testing, contact-tracing and isolating infected individuals.

In addition, the World Health Organisation says that countries still need to minimise transmission in potential hotspots, such as care homes and large gatherings. It is of deep concern that these states prioritise religious gatherings above the economy and personal safety. The virus has infected more than 5.5 million people worldwide and killed over 347,000. The need to get countries back to work to ameliorate the economic impact of the pandemic is, of course, urgent.

The welfare of the people and their economic survival should take precedence over religion in serious countries. The European Union says it is supporting member-nations to reopen international borders to re-energise tourism with a caveat that a country should have «a strong health system.» In this, the European Union education ministers heard at their recent virtual meeting that there was no significant spike in COVID-19 cases after elementary schools reopened in 22 EU states. In spite of this, these countries are staying alert, signifying they can re-impose lockdowns at any time because, with coronavirus, it is still stop and start. «We will be driven not by mere hope or economic necessity,» British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said.

«We’re going to be driven by science, the data, and public health».

The implication of their choice might not be evident immediately, but in the weeks ahead, the whole country might live to regret pandering to religious sentiments. That is perhaps why the Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom, reversed himself after initially directing that religious gatherings should go ahead. As images from the weekend show, the rush to lift the ban on religious gatherings appears rash. In some of the states that lifted the ban on religious gatherings, the incidence of the virus is rising sharply.

This does not warrant the reopening of religious gatherings. Really, religion and the virus are a fatal mix. Two-thirds of Malaysia’s initial cases in early March were traced to a four-day event at Sri Petaling mosque, the country’s Minister of Health, Adham Baba, said. Consequently, Saudi Arabia banned religious gatherings and was able to keep its COVID-19 infections under control.

Along this line, the Netherlands and Germany have banned social gatherings until September at the earliest. This is a pragmatic decision because religion is not the lifeblood of a country. In contrast, the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 tracker says Brazil is now the second most afflicted country in the world after the United States because President Jair Bolsonaro is recklessly treating the virus as «a little flu» that should not disturb church services. This serves as a lesson for the governors playing the religious card.

Nature, the authoritative research journal, warns that if restrictions are lifted prematurely, the impacts of the virus risk being prolonged.

PoliticsBREAKING NEWS: INEC Plans To Start Electronic Voting In 2021 by Jeroboy(op): 2:40am On May 26, 2020
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday said it would engage with the National Assembly and other stakeholders to explore ways of responding to the rising cost of conducting frequent bye-elections in Nigeria.

The commission premised its decision on the Supreme Court judgment which states that votes belong primarily to political parties, as well as its records, which show that only in 10 per cent of all bye-elections since 2015 did the party that won originally lose the election.

INEC also said it would “pilot the use of Electronic Voting Machines at the earliest possible time (not Edo and Ondo), but work towards the full introduction of electronic voting in major elections starting from 2021.”

The commission gave these details in its 17-paged policy document on conducting elections in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, signed by its chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made available to journalists in Abuja.

According to the document, the commission would ensure the use of electronic and non-contact means to recruit ad hoc staff beginning with the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states scheduled for September 19 and October 10, 2020 respectively.

The commission also said it would reduce to a minimum interstate movement of staff, including ad hoc staff, for off-season and bye-elections to reduce the risk of transmission of coronavirus.

The document reads, “The commission will engage with the legislature and other stakeholders to explore ways of responding to the rising cost of conducting frequent bye-elections, especially in consideration of the Supreme Court position that votes belong primarily to political parties, as well as the Commission’s records, which show that only in 10 per cent of all bye-elections since 2015 did the party that won originally lose the election.

“The commission will engage relevant authorities, including the legislature, to designate election as an essential service to enable the commission function effectively in times of national emergency.

EducationRector Asks Institutions To Tackle COVID-19 Pandemic by Jeroboy(op): 2:19am On May 26, 2020
The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Dr Hephzibah Oladebeye, has urged tertiary institutions in the country to seek new knowledge and ways to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oladebeye said the polytechnic would continue to do its best to adjust to the new way of life in the society as dictated by the pandemic, while not neglecting the culture of regular hand washing and other hygienic practices.

Oladebeye, who was visibly excited, said the faculty had lived up to the mandate given to all sections of the polytechnic community to come up with responsive solutions to the pandemic, which he said had wreaked havoc on the world economy.

Calling on other arms of the polytechnic to also come up with more products that would be useful in the struggle to contain the spread of the pandemic as a way of giving back to the society, he added, Since we cannot afford to leave government alone in the task of fighting the pandemic, all are enjoined to continue to seek new knowledge and solutions aimed at curtailing the ravaging pandemic.

The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Mrs Kehinde Ekanem, lauded the departments and the School for coming up with such laudable products that hallmark the polytechnic as a corporately responsive institution in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby identifying with the needs of the society .
