Guys, I have an open question. How can you measure the productivity of masons/ brick layers doing plastering? Is it better to pay daily rate or give out the plastering job on contract. If you pay daily rate how do you measure their performance?

Jerry, my heart is gladdened to meet a fellow Deltan. Delta wadooo (bows) . . .  My right hand may not know what my left hand is doing but I believe others are still assisting but that does not mean to say those of us who haven't should not begin to start. I kampke this idea. I have often considered various ways I too could contribute to my people.

As an artist I have so many pens, brushes, pencils, paint etc lying about . . .even old fabric - these mundane items that have perhaps to us passed their expiry date or usefullnes will sure be of help to our brethren back home . . it's a good idea, I support you and willing to assit

Beaf cannot do it alone, the government cannot do it alone. Even in the states, people give generously to charity. No one is obligated. It is called freewill.

Every achievement starts with a thought. On this note, I am thinking of pulling kind hearted people of Delta state by indigene or birth to come together and contibute in which ever way. Ekiti state indigenes in Diaspora were able to buy sandals for all primary school pupils, we can do same or better. I have a friend from Anambra state that gives her time on medical missions to Anambra state one time every year. This trend will go to other states and leave a resounding legacy and also make our voice in Diaspora heard. I am not leaving this discision to my self but to every contributor.

What can we do for the masses and their wards?

Please I will need your thoughts on basic things we can take to them back home (Example are sandals for primary school pupils, pen/note books, computers for students labs, uniforms for needy students, footballs/volley balls/hockey sticks, books for students libraries, chairs and desks for students etc). What are your thoughts? This will be the first phase in this process (identifying what needs to be done). Next steps will follow and will involve giving in cash or in kind.

Some call it blocks while others call it 'sandcrete', this is an important building material which we get by mixing powdered cement, sharp sand and water in a ratio made to suit the job it was produced for. You might wonder why I used the phrase 'in a ratio made to suit the job it was produced for'? Okay,  there are many uses for blocks apart from using it to raise the walls in homes and fences. Blocks could be used for a variety of works, including

1. Walling of a house
2. Making a fence
3. Building a generator house or any other house that have vibrating machines inside it.
4. Toilet pits or soak away tanks.

Because of the various uses for blocks, the mixing ratio cannot be the same, we tend to reduce the ratio of sand to a bag of cement if we want a more solid mix or a block product which can do more than covering the walls in a house. I will like to mention here that most houses, especially those built with reinforced concrete columns and metal rods, blocks don't bear any loads, this is why you see houses built without blocks at first, the builder will first raise the columns and deck the first floor, then continue with another set of columns which will bear the next floor, and up and up we go.
There are many different types of blocks in modern building, these include

1. 9" hollow blocks
2. 6" hollow blocks
3. 6" solid blocks
4. 5" solid blocks

These blocks could be used according to the specifications of the building plan you are using. Most houses with more than one floors uses the 9" blocks on the ground floor and maybe the next few floors, but as a house rises in height, it is recommended that the weight of the blocks on the top floors be reduced, ie. If you use 9" blocks to do a ground floor, use 6" to do the top floors to ease the weight on the columns, beams and foundation.

Many more things to say about blocks, let me rest and come back to the topic later.

There are 4" blocks as well. I recently did a partitioning with 4" blocks. It looks so nice. With the increasing cost of cement, 4" blocks may be the sure way to go.
